Comment Text Hack

This is the section of code that has to be replaced to make the words "No Comments" or the number of comments on a post show as different text.

The original content pulls from a specific data location and that is what creates the words No Comments or the number....so making this change tells the page to pull the comment text from the text written in therefore by making this change, you are giving up the ability to see the number of comments on a post as well...just fair warning in case you decide to do this.

This change is really only designed for the Designer Templates....there are other CSS things you can do for the Dynamics that you can find on other blogs out there.

I mostly wanted this for my own reference for the big updates I need to make. Another note about this, that the post template and full template are updated pretty regularly when the Blogger platform is updated so these hacks can disappear and have to be reapplied.

The content that needs to be replaced is < data:post.commentlabelfull/ >: with the text you wanted. This is the section that you are looking for to make that change.

FAQ: New Dashboard on Blogger

Blogger has rolled out a new dashboard. You can read about it at this link on the Blogger Blog.

The new dashboard takes you directly to the blog that has the most recent updates to it, however you can go to any of your other blogs by clicking on the down arrow on the top left area where the current blog name is listed. See image.

As all changes do, this new dashboard might take some getting used to. You can give feedback directly to the Blogger team via the feedback link on the dashboard (lower right on page). We recommend using this link for feedback as it goes directly to the Blogger team.

If you are having issues with viewing the new dashboard or are getting error messages, please report them in the forum as you would any other issue.

NOTE: older browsers might have some compatibility issues with the new dashboard so trying to update your browser might be the quickest way to fix most issues.

URL For Locating Archive Albums In Google Photos

Now that Google has once again changed how they are handling photos across Google products, the Blogger albums (and I assume albums created in other products other than Google Photos) are hidden from the album list on Google Photos.

This is a good thing in that it keeps people from accidentally deleting all the images in their blogs thinking that the album was being shared or visible to anyone but them before, however it has also caused some issues for those that want access to those images to either change them or delete them from their blog.

This link will get you to the location that shows all albums on your account. Note that care should be used in this area because you can affect all of your products if you do even a bit of fiddling around (even just moving images between albums).

Some testing needs to be done by yours truly to determine what happens when a picture is used on a blog from the regular Google Photos albums and if deleting a post on the blog with an image in it automatically deletes it from the album as well or if a double delete needs to be done.

At a later date, though...mostly just wanted to get this URL up for my own reference.

There is an issue with several Google fonts, adding the code below to the < head > section of your blog will solve it

URLs Not Available After Deletion

As of our last update, URLs that are deleted are no longer available to anyone (including the original owner) after the blog has disappeared off the "deleted" list on the dashboard.

The previous setting of making them available after a few months has been removed. If someone wants to give someone else a url, they need to transfer the blog.

This is a question that comes up almost everyday on the Blogger Help Forum...or I guess I should say the results of the confusion regarding this question shows up all the time. I can't even count how many times I have had to explain to users that use of Gmail is not a requirement for Blogger or any other Google product (other than Gmail).

Basically, if you are already a Google account holder (on a different email from Gmail), you can use that account with Blogger and not have to bother with Gmail. If you are signing up with Blogger for the first time, it will take you to a Google account creation page and on that page, it will force you to create a Gmail account but you can add your own email address (non-Gmail) to the account as an alternate, and then immediately cancel the Gmail account after you have everything set up the way you want.

I just did this myself for a new blog I created. I was forced to create a Gmail account when clicking on the Blogger invite, and then was able to add the yahoo address to the account that I wanted, used it to log into the account, and then canceled the Gmail account.

To cancel the Gmail account, you use this link, (make sure you have first added a second email to the overall Google account before you do this and checked that you are able to log into your Google account using that email address).

Google+ Auto-share From Blogger Exceptions

So if you have enabled your Google+ profile instead of a Blogger profile and are trying to use the auto-share feature to Google+ when you create a new post, you should know that there are exceptions to this.

The Google+ auto-share feature will not work during the following times:

- Posts created by email
- Posts created using import
- Posts created using the API
- Posts scheduled and published later

Ways To Check The Feed Size

Another reference post here for me so I don't lose this information since it is very handy.

Just to check the size, paste the feed URL into http://www.rexswain.com/httpview.html

and see Content (Length = 146613).

Save the feed to local file, see the file size in whatever file manager/Explorer you're using.

View the source of the feed, copy&paste into notepad++ , see the file size at the bottom statusbar.

Gives better options in counting/finding reasons for a too large filesize.

(though view-source:URL in Chrome counts pretty well too)

CSS For Changing The Wording Of The Commentor

This code worked for me in at least one of my blogs for adding "said:" to the comment after the user's name...I image you could change it to whatever word you wanted. This was only tested on regular templates, not the dynamic views.

New Google Shared Endorsements Settings

I am sure everyone has noticed the big blue bar across the top of whatever Google product they might be logged into today...

Regardless of all your other settings, I find this one in particular to be important to look at. It has to do with sharing across Google's products of your preferences that show up in ads that other users might see.

There is a link in the new TOS, but it might not stand out enough, so I am providing it here too so you can go directly there, if this is a particular interest of yours.

There is a check box at the bottom. For me it was defaulted to Opt Out but that might be due to the fact that I already have my +1 info opted for off in my Google account settings. Deal is, if you want to share your preferences for particular items to the public or "friends" via ads, you check the box and then click save. If you DON'T want to, then leave the box empty and hit save.

I have to say, I love how Google approached the changes page, explaining things in plain English rather than a bunch of confusing legalese.
