More Light Experiments

2012-12-11T02:38:00.000-08:00

This time I experimented with light in the photography studio at college. I used different coloured torches and a 20-30 second shutterspeed to capture the movement of the light.

I am SO happy with how these pictures turned out. I used a 30 second exposure for these photographs and used a torch to "draw" with light. Inspired by Michael Bosanko.

Chesterfield To Leeds Project

2012-12-04T07:30:00.004-08:00

My theme in my photography project is "photowalks". I decided to use a journey I do very often which is from my Mums house in Chesterfield, to my Dads house in Leeds. I used my my Canon SLR for these photographs. A lot of these pictures were taken from my chest because people act differently when they know they're being photographed.

Taken from my chest so the people in the picture didn't know they were being photographed, I had no idea what this photo was going to look like but I really like the composition of it.

I took this with the "night portrait" setting. It was starting to get dark outside so I had to make the ISO around 1600 which was making the photos grainy and the lights didn't show up as bright as I hoped so I used this setting. It uses flash but only seems to brighten the areas you want to be vibrant which I really liked.

I used a shutter speed of 15 seconds for this photograph. It would have looked better if there were more cars on the motorway as some lanes are empty. I am going to try this again in a busier place.

I used the "night portrait" setting again for this photograph. I really liked how it showed all the colours of the sunset. I then edited the contrast in photo shop to make the buildings silhouettes.

Photography Course November 27th

2012-12-04T07:17:00.001-08:00

I paid to go on a day long photography course in Bakewell. It was a beginners course so a lot of the things we learnt were things I already knew but it was good to refresh my memory. We went out into Bakewell to two locations, one was a public garden and the other was near the bridge in Bakewell. The task was to take pictures using different apertures to see the difference that they make. I used a large aperture (F.3.5) for most of these photographs as I liked the blur in the background and the sharp focus on the subject.

We then went to the bridge and used shutter speed priority to capture the numerous birds there as they are flying. It was difficult to get the exact moment right and because it was a dull day, I couldn't use a very fast shutter speed because it made the photograph quite dark. I put the ISO to 1600 to get lighter images with fast shutter speeds but this made the photographs have a lot of "noise".

As a last resort I tried to take photographs of the birds with flash. This worked perfectly and captured the bird a lot stiller than it would without flash. The only thing with using flash that didnt make the photograph look as good was how bright they are, so when I got home I edited the bright photographs in photoshop.
I really like how they turned out, especially the flying pigeon.

The photographer that runs this course then asked me if I would like to help her do a wedding shoot next month, so I have my first photography job!

William Klein + Daido Mariyama (College Work)

William Klein and Daido Mariyama Photography Exhibition at Tate Modern.

Description From The Gallery:
Explore modern urban life in New York and Tokyo through the photographs of William Klein and Daido Moriyama. This is the first exhibition to look at the relationship between the work of influential photographer and filmmaker Klein, and that of Moriyama, the most celebrated photographer to emerge from the Japanese Provoke movement of the 1960s.
With work from the 1950s to the present day, the exhibition demonstrates the visual affinity between their urgent, blurred and grainy style of photography and also their shared desire to convey street life and political protest, from anti-war demonstrations and gay pride marches to the effects of globalisation and urban deprivation.
The exhibition also considers the medium and dissemination of photography itself, exploring the central role of the photo-book in avant-garde photography and the pioneering use of graphic design within these publications. As well the issues of Provoke magazine in which Moriyama and his contemporaries showcased their work, the exhibition will include fashion photography from Klein’s work with Vogue and installations relating to his satirical films Mister Freedom and Who Are You Polly Maggoo?

Review From Sean O'Hagan (The Guardian):

As you enter the first room of this ambitious exhibition devoted to two pioneers of postwar photography, it is one of William Klein's early films that serves as a deceptively gentle introduction. Made in 1958, Broadway by Light is a homage to colour, light and the now nostalgia-tinged magic of the giant flickering advertisements that throw their dazzle and shimmer on to the rainy sidewalks of midtown Manhattan. It is a playful film, a kind of extended visual jazz riff on the nocturnal cityscape that so entranced the restless young Klein. The film gives little indication of the photographs that follow, which give full expression to Klein's free-form exploration of movement, energy and graininess. That energy is punctuated here and there by the occasional moment of stillness, mostly in his portraits.

The momentum and scattergun vision of Klein's work are, on one level, a preparation for Daido Moriyama's images, which take up the second series of rooms in this maze of an exhibition. But, though the two artists have been brought together by Simon Baker, the Tate's curator of photography, this is essentially two separate exhibitions. The viewer walks though the Klein show into the Moriyama show, and is forced to find connections that might have been more easily made, and dramatically illustrated, if the work of both had been shown side by side.

Moriyama had already extended and subverted Klein's fast-moving approach, often making books where the idea of context – and even subject – was jettisoned in favour of something more impressionistic. Moriyama's cityscapes are realms of the imagination, full of dark suggestion and ominous shadows. On the walls of Tate Modern his work does not work the way it does in his myriad photobooks, which shape – you could even say curtail – his frenetic style into a series of impressionistic diaries. Without the book format the images often seem unmoored. Moriyama's best known book is Farewell Photography, the title of which gives some idea of his radical approach. In it, as Minoru Shimizu notes in his catalogue essay for this show, "grainy, blurry, out-of-focus is a method of annihilation: no meaning, no expression, no sense of the photographer".

Review From Richard Dorment (The Telegraph):

You can see why Tate Modern’s curator of photography thought that staging side-by-side retrospectives of the American photographer William Klein and his Japanese contemporary Daido Moriyama might be a good idea. Both are powerful artistic personalities fascinated by the throbbing, shifting spectacle of street life in big cities; both work mainly in black and white; and both embrace a no-frills realist aesthetic. But, for all their obvious similarities, this back-to-back presentation only succeeds in highlighting their differences. That would be no bad thing, except that Moriyama suffers by being shown after Klein.

Traces

2012-11-20T06:49:00.001-08:00

Part of a task at college to use a compact campera and photograph "traces" that people have left in and around college. It was difficult to get the detail on the photograph as it was a 10 megapixel digital camera and the outcomes are blurry from camera shake.

Halloween Inspired Photography.

2012-11-20T06:44:00.000-08:00

The final peice pictures for my latest project. I used the theme "halloween" and took inspiration from Diane Arbus' pictures of abnormal looking people and the locations she uses to take these photographs.

A mask I found in the loft. It had rotted away over time which I think looked good on the photographs.

I used a fast shutterspeed to capture the leaves in the air. Because the shutterspeed was so fast, I had to use flash to get enough light into the picture. When I looked back at the image, I didnt like the orangey/yellow colours which is why I made the photograph black and white and put more contrast onto the photograph.

Taken with a low aperture (F3.5) to get a sharp focus on the subject and the field behind blurred.

Photographers Research

2012-11-20T05:23:00.001-08:00

I really like the idea of photographers"shooting at the hip" in busy places such as cities. Two photographers; Daido Moriyama and William Klein are being exhibited at the Tate at the moment that use this style of photography.

Daido Moriyama uses a small compact camera to take his images and later edits them to be black and white. He wanders around the city he lives in taking pictures of absolutely everything. All of his photography is down to chance as he doesnt know what the photograph will look like until he's took it.

William Klein uses the same style and presents his photographs in books. The majority of his photographs are taken in New York showing the less glamous side to it, than it is known for.

I attended a day- long photography course through the company "go digital". It was mainly about aperture and focus points. I learnt so much that I never knew before and now use the skills I learnt in my photography which has improved it a lot. These are some of the pictures I took on the course.

Diane Arbus

DIANE ARBUS

In my college essay I am looking at the photographer Diane Arbus. One of the pictures she is most famous for is this photo of Cathleen and Colleen Wade taken at a twins and triplets Christmas Party.

In my family there are identical twins called Kate and Danielle Wilson. I asked them to match the pose of Diane Arbus' photo of identical twins. I used a plain coloured background and flash to focus all the attention on the subjects like she did.

I also told the twin on the left not to smile as much as the one on the right to match expression of the faces on the twin's photo.

17th Birthday

2012-07-12T15:02:00.001-07:00

It was my birthday on the 10th July, I spent the day shopping at meadow hall, went out with family for an Indian and then the next day me and my friends went to a Tapas restaurant (then Frankie and Bennies for pudding).

For my birthday I got an iPhone and 10 driving lessons then I bought myself Nicki Minaj tickets and a Canon EOS SLR 550D from work overtime and birthday money.

Expect a lot more higher quality photos from now on!

Manchester University

2012-06-21T09:38:00.000-07:00

My trip with college to Manchester University:

I took pictures of the pieces of work that interested me. This first piece of work is by somebody called Jack Oliver who is studying BA (Hons) Graphic Design. The piece below is made up of different layers which, when you stand directly in front of it, make a face. This particular piece caught my eye because its something I haven't seen before. From the side you cant make out what its meant to be, which makes you want to know more about it. Under the face says "He's got his Mothers eyes. The ultimate juxtaposition of inherited features". There was no artist statement or sketchbook related to this so I guessed that he was looking at a similar theme to my fine art project, which is Generations or Inheritance.

This is another of Jack Oliver's pieces of work which is more photography based. This was my favourite out of everything I saw at the exhibition. I like how he's managed to add humour to his photos which makes them interesting.

This piece by Ross Pagent, studying BA (Hons) Graphic Design also caught my eye at the exhibition. At a first glance you don't notice that the letters actually make up words in the pile. The words you could see were "end", "broken" and "promises" which explains why the pile is made up of 'broken' words, like the promises.

This was a collaged piece by Leanne Richardson. She took the colours of the skin tone on the model and continued the face using different shades of brown. She then used this technique to turn a portrait of a woman into a lion. I really like how the two subjects merge together and there isn't a definite line where the human turns into a lion.

After looking at the graphic design, fine art and other art works in the main art part of the University, we crossed over the road to look at the photography section, which interests me the most as it is what I would like to study if I do decide to go to University.

It was hard to get a good picture of these photographs as the room was so light which gives the reflection on the pictures.

This piece of work was based around the photographer (Stephanie Parnell)'s grandma, Irene. In her artist statement she wrote "my work explores ideas of the personal familial relationships and the spaces in which these relationships function. The project is based around taking pictures of her grandmas possessions and things that make up her life and making them into a book. For example the cat she feeds that isn't actually hers and how she is given a card every time she visits. I really liked this idea because it's personal to the photographer and you can tell she was really involved in the project.

Overall I liked the work students at Manchester University of Art produced as there's a wide range and the students seem to be really driven to produce pieces of work they can be proud of. Each one seems personal to them which I found made them a lot more interesting. Manchester would probably be a good option if I decide to go to University in the future.
