One of html5 attributes is the placeholder. This is a short hint (a word or short phrase) intended to aid the user with data entry).
Here is an example of a mail configuration user interface that uses this attribute:

Isn't it simple? you don't even need javascript.

Typically, this text is displayed with grey color, but you can stylize the text using CSS.

Note: For a longer hint or other advisory text, the title attribute is more appropriate.

While this can be done only in Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox, in Opera as yet there is no opportunity specify the styles, and IE doesn’t support it at all.
Still, there are ways to fix this with JQuery. Check this article by DotJay.

CCK - How to sort roman numerics in a chronological order

This was the problem that I needed to solve: I had a table in a D6 project with a repertory and though it was easy to display fields like composer, title or category in an alphabetic order, this was not applicable to the field "century". The question was: how to display in a select list, as allowed values, roman numerics (characters such as X, I or V) in an ascending or descending chronological order? One simple solution that I found (partly inspired by Gisle Hannemyr's tutorial), was to create a new field in the respective content type "repertory", by

navigating to Administer → Content management → Content types

Then, by clicking on manage fields, I acceded the page where I could add fields to the content type repertoire.
For a Select list widget, the following options appear in the Global settings panel:

Required - tick this if user must select at least one value.
Number of values - the maximum number of values users can enter for this field.
Minimum and Maximum - can be used for input validation.
Suffix and Prefix - for display properties such as currency denominations or physical units of measurement.

Since it's not always possible to determine the piece origin, didn't ticked the "required" option and I just set Number of values equal to 1, and left the rest empty.

Now the juicy part: choosing the Select list widget I was able to create a list of ordered centuries from XV to XXI and associate each with an integer key value. For example, the key value 1 will correspond to “XV”, 2 will correspond “XVI”, and so on.

So, in the Allowed values panel, I created a numbered list allowed of alternatives. I simply entered a list of key/label pairs where a vertical bar character ("|") is used to separate the two. The screen-dump below shows how to enter key/label pairs.

To show the output of this data, I created a Normal Node view, where I added this field.And this was the intended and obtained result:

Piwik is a downloadable, open source (GPL licensed) real time web analytics software program. It provides reports on the website visitors (the search engines and keywords they used, the language they speak, your popular pages…Piwik aims to be an open source alternative to Google Analytics.
It's a PHP MySQL software program that you download and install on your own webserver. At the end of the five minute installation process you will be given a JavaScript code. Then, just copy and paste this tag on websites you wish to track (or use an existing plugin to do it automatically for you) and access your analytics reports in real time.

It's a fair, affordable and interesting alternative.

O ciclo de vida de um projecto Drupal

Um projeto Drupal não começa com a instalação (como poderá imaginar). Na verdade, podem considerar-se seis fases neste processo.

1. Descoberta
Durante a descoberta, aprendemos tanto quanto pudermos sobre o cliente, o projeto e os objetivos do projeto. Esta é também onde começamos a criar um mapa das funcionalidades que precisamos de implementar, todos os recursos que precisaremos, etc.

2. Experiência do Usuário e Arquitetura
Este é o momento em que nos concentramos na UX (experiência do usuário) e da usuabilidade do web site. Apesar de não podermos projetar a experiência do utilizador, podemos e devemos desenhar o projeto em função dos utilizadores. Esta análise inclui considerações tais como: quem são os utilizadores, o que é que eles sabem? O que é que podem aprender? O que é que os utilizadores querem ou precisam de fazer? Qual é a contexto dos utilizadores em geral? Qual é o contexto dos utilizadores que irão fazer a manutenção do web site? Durante esta fase, será conveniente desenhar wireframes, fluxos do utilizadores.

3. Criação de Prototipo
Antes de iniciar a fase de implementar funcionalidades, devemos começar por testar algumas das hipóteses e dos fluxos de usuário que resultaram da fase de Experiência do Usuário. Nordin sugere que "Para sites simples, a Criação do Prototipo e a fase de implementação funcional se desenvolvam em conjunto, mas no caso de fluxos de utilizadores mais complexos, ou de projetos que envolvam uma tonelada de conteúdos, a fase de criação de protótipo é essencial para ter certeza de que algo que deseja criar vai funcionar da forma como quer no Drupal "(Nordin, 2011, p 18).

4. Implementação funcional
De acordo com Nordin, "durante esta fase, o foco está em implementar as funcionalidades que descrevemos na fase de experiência do utilizador, excluindo-as de todas as áreas onde não façam sentido, ou não estejam dentro do orçamento. No caso de sites menos ambiciosos, é provável que sejam feitos por conta própria, no entanto, se você não está atualmente numa equipe de Drupal, aqui vai um conselho: comece a conhecer alguns desenvolvedores, e a pagar-lhes para que o ajudem quando as coisas se tornam demasiado difíceis. Os desenvolvedores são os melhores amigos de um designer no Drupal ".

5. Design Visual e Theming
Tenha em atenção, por favor, que o design visual, o que é considerado em linguagem Drupal como sendo o theming e que define a aparência de um determinado site, vem em quinto lugar nesta lista. Uma das muitas razões para isso, como Nordin afirma em seu livro, "é porque trazer o design visual à baila muito cedo num projeto Drupal ou em qualquer projeto, é uma receita para o desastre .. (...) É no aspecto visual do projeto que os clientes se irão se fixar, em detrimento de quaisquer questões mais importantes" (Nordin, 2011, p 18).

6. Testes e lançamento
É aconselhável testar sempre antes do lançamento e após o lançamento. E, em seguida, novamente após a oportunidade do cliente de fazer alterações sem o consultar.1 º - Inicie o processo migrando o código de um servidor de desenvolvimento para o servidor de teste (o servidor que mantém o seu site antes deste estar publicamente visível na web), e certifique-se de que nada ficou quebrado ou deixou de funcionar durante esse processo2 º - Depois de testá-lo e verificar se tudo está OK, migre tudo, do ambiente de desenvolvimento para a produção (onde o site estará, em última análise, ao vivo).Para este processo, é incrivelmente útil ter desenvolvedores na sua equipa.

The lifecycle of a Drupal project

A Drupal project doesn't start with the site installation (as you imagine). In fact, you can consider 6 phases in this process.

1. Discovery
During discovery, we learn as much as we can about the client, the project, and the project’s objectives. This is also where we start to create a map of the functionality that we need to implement, any resources we’ll need, etc.

2. User Experience and Architecture
This is where we focus on the UX (user experience) and the website usability. Despite you can not design the user experience, you can and should design for the users. This analysis includes considerations such as: Who are the users, what do they know, what can they learn? What do users want or need to do? What is the users' general background? What is the users' context for working? During this phase, you’ll be doing work like wireframes, user flows, and often starting to prototype things directly into Drupal.

3. Prototyping
Before starting the Functional Implementation phase, we start testing some of the hypotheses and user flows that came out of the User Experience phase. Nordin suggests that "For simple sites, the prototyping and functional implementation phase go together; for more complex user flows, or for projects where you’re wrangling a ton of content, the prototyping phase is essential to making sure that something you want to create will work the way you want it to in Drupal"(Nordin, 2011, p 18).

4. Functional Implementation
According to Nordin, "during this phase, the focus is on creating the functionality that we’ve described in the user experience phase, and ironing out any areas where the functionality we’ve decided on doesn’t make sense, or aren’t available within the budget. For many smaller sites, there’s a good chance that you’ll be doing this work on your own; however, if you’re not currently on a Drupal team, be advised: get to know some developers, and pay them to do things for you when you’re in a rut. Developers are a Drupal designer’s best friend".

5. Visual Design and Theming
Notice, please, that visual design, what is considered in Drupal language as being the theming and defines the look and feel of a given site, comes fifth in this list. One of the many reasons for this, as Nordin states in his book, "is because bringing visual design into the picture too early in a Drupal project or any significant project, for that matter is a recipe for disaster..(…) The visual design is the aspect that clients will most often fixate on, to the detriment of more important issues" (Nordin, 2011, p 18).

6. Testing and Launch
It is wise to always test before launch and after launch. And then again after the client’s had a chance to makes his changes without consulting you.
1º - Start this process by moving your code from a development server to a staging server (the server that holds your site before the world gets to see it), and making sure parts didn’t break in transit.
2º - After testing it and make sure everything is OK, you’ll move everything from staging to production (where the site will ultimately live).
For this process, it’s incredibly useful to have developers on your team.

PIPA (Protect IP Act) opponents have reasons to celebrate. Their voices was probably heard (an estimated 10,000 websites went dark) and the US senate has postponed Tuesday's procedural vote.
According to Grant Gross, from CSO Online, "opponents of PIPA, including the Consumer Electronics Association and NetCoalition, urged senators to delay the vote and return to the drawing board".
This compromises seriously the possibility to create opportunities for all members of a population to make meaningful contributions to decision-making, and seeks to broaden the range of people who have access to such opportunities. Internet censorship is a dramatic eminence that compromises all critical mass growth.

How to disable messages in Drupal

If you have ever created a Drupal website, you surely wondered how could it be possible to filter error messages, status messages, warning messages, enabling their display to specific users groups. Well, thanks to a group of developers, it's possible! This useful Drupal module has the following features: Filter out messages that match a full text string exactly. Filter out messages that match a regular expression. Permissions to specifically hide all messages of a given type from any role. Disable all filtering for specific users. Disable all filtering for specific paths. Apply filtering only for specific paths. Debug system to get messages in the HTML without showing it to the end users. Disable Message is available for D6 and D7. I tested it in a D6 website and it is really easy to install and configure. After downloading it, go to yoursite/admin/settings/disable-messages, if you want to specify what messages display you wish to disable to all the users groups, or go directly to yoursite/admin/user/permissions#module-disable_messages. I'm in the process of researching for an innovative start-up project. Reading Business Model Generation I found a more opportune and interesting way of looking at the business world. The major objective is to engage with the wider social context. Em 2011, fomos "responsive designers" assim como o marketing tentou acompanhar as mudanças dos ecrans, plataformas, aplicativos mais usados pelo consumidor.
No web design surgiu o UX (user experience). Vozes sensatas alertaram para a impossibilidade de se "desenhar a experiência do utilizador" transformando o lugar comum na recomendação de se desenhar "para a" experiência do utilizador (Helge Fredheim)
O impacto sobre a industria da web analytics converteu-se igualmente numa necessidade de unificar este complexo quadro. Só assim os marketers poderiam operacionalizar análises específicas para cada dispositivo e plataforma e ligar dots (direction of trade) a fim de medirem e avaliarem através dos vários canais, as tendências dos consumidores. Com a ajuda dos dispositivos móveis e da Internet, os consumidores também se juntaram alegremente on-line, enchendo os seus carrinhos de compras em 2011. De acordo com dados recolhidos a partir de sites que partilharam os seus dados com o Google, houve uma subida de 63% no volume mensal de transações on-line de dezembro 2010 a dezembro de 2011 e, em média, o número de transações de comércio eletrónico cresceu cerca de 1,2% a cada semana em 2011.
Em 2012, os marketers deverão esperar instrumentos ainda mais sofisticados para medir o envolvimento dos consumidores com os sites optimizados para dispositivos móveis e a eficácia dos anúncios publicitários para esses dispositivos irá ajudar a determinar que plataformas e que formatos é que se adequam às tendências desses consumidores.

In 2011, we were "responsive designers" as marketing tried to follow the changes of the screens, platforms, applications commonly used by consumers.
In Web design the UX (user experience) emerged. Sensible voices warned us about the impossibility of "designing the user experience" transforming this common place into a recommendation to draw "for the" user experience (Helge Fredheim).
Also on the industry of web analytics, the impact has turned itself into a need to unify this complex framework. Only this way the marketers could operationalize specific analysis to each device and platform, and connect dots (direction of trade) to measure and assess, through the various channels, the consumer trends. With the help of mobile devices and the Internet, consumers also joined cheerfully online, filling their shopping carts in 2011. According to the data collected from sites that shared it with Google, there was an increase 63% of the monthly volume of transactions on-line between December 2010 and December 2011 and, on average, the number of e-commerce transactions grew by 1.2% per week in 2011.
In 2012, marketers should expect even more sophisticated instruments to measure consumer involvement with sites optimized for mobile devices and the effectiveness of advertisements for these devices will help determine which platforms and formats is to suit the trends of consumers.
Measuring social media through ROI (Return On Investment) becomes a reality in 2012. The Social media has influenced the way consumers shop and interact with brands, but to marketers lacks, however, methods to measure in a clear way how their social investment leads to the sales increasement.

Psychological Contract and the Fear to Exist

This is a question that has worried me for the past few days: "as we struggle with new and overwhelming challenges, do we face them as opportunities for a deeper insight and a change of attitude?
In what concerns my professional life, I honestly want to believe in this. However, the "psychological contract" brought me, after great expectations, bigger disappointments. The main cause of disappointment is the fact that middle managers are so protective of their status and security in the eyes of their superiors, that when they are required to fulfill their obligations to their subordinates, they justify their incoherence with their master voices.
This brought me to the question: "Is there such a thing as a psychological contract in Portuguese employment reality?"
"A psychological contract represents the mutual beliefs, perceptions, and informal obligations between an employer and an employee. It sets the dynamics for the relationship and defines the detailed practicality of the work to be done. It is distinguishable from the formal written contract of employment which, for the most part, only identifies mutual duties and responsibilities in a generalized form."

What if, due to this fear and submissive attitude of the middle managers there isn't even a formal written contract? In Portugal we have a wonderful and magical hocus pocus, known as "the green receipts". According to the EWCO (European Working Conditions Observatory), quoting Rebelo, G., though in general, self-employed workers develop a service or activity independently, and their relationship with the labour market is formalised through contracts and the Portuguese law states that a worker is formally connected to a counterpart by a services supply contract when ‘one of the parts is obliged to provide to the other certain results of its intellectual or manual work, with or without retribution’ (art. 1154 of the Code of Civil Procedure). However, in real terms, the situation of this category of workers may vary. Some self-employed people are completely dependent on these contracts. Those who are entirely dependent on service contracts may be regarded as ‘false self-employed’ or ‘economically dependent’ workers as they frequently work for employers, through a typical subordinate activity, although they present themselves as independent workers for social protection purposes and provide receipts for their work (known in Portugal as ‘green receipts’).

José Gil refers himself to Portugal in "Portugal, Hoje - O Medo de Existir" [Portugal, Today. The Fear to exist], as the Country of the non-inscription, as a gigantic device of the "non-inscription" that stifles all the Portuguese people.

We are the boiling frog...But speaking for myself, I'd rather jump out of the boiling water and face my fears!!!

Recently I bought a color ebook reader by the modest sum of € 84, 66 with which I am very pleased. This device reads any kind of text files, image, audio or video.

A genealogia das ideias pode ser um universo intrigante e muito estimulante. A mente é um cadinho onde uma infinidade de experiências ocorrem. Há pensamentos, emoções, memórias que vêm e vão. O nosso único poder reside na vigilância e no aumento da consciência.
Poderão alguns artistas acreditar que, ao terem ideias, estão a "inventar" a roda. Pessoalmente confio e admiro muito mais aqueles que assumem sem rodeios "roubarem" e copiarem tudo aquilo que o universo lhes oferece. Esses, sim, podem transformar e recriar aquilo que, de facto já existe, em algo melhor.

No último artigo, mencionei a importância de dar aos utilizadores a possibilidade de se envolverem e de tornar o seu site mais interessante, através de incentivos de fidelização. Isso soa bem, mas como é que um pequeno empresário poderá garantir isso? Como é que pode tornar seu site mais dinâmico? Quais são os tipos de conteúdo que deve produzir ou como poderá atrair utilizadores e criar uma comunidade?
Em primeiro lugar, está a importância do conteúdo ser dinâmico. Por essa razão, é imprescindível um sistema de gestão de conteúdos (CMS) que permita gerir conteúdo web (vídeo, fotos, texto, blog, podcasts, etc.) de forma fácil, obter estatísticas em tempo real e compreender as necessidades e tendências dos utilizadores.
Apresento, então, sete exemplos de conteúdo dinâmico que podem ajudá-lo a tornar o seu site mais dinâmico:

Vídeo — O conteúdo do vídeo é perfeitamente adequado para pequenas empresas. Ao criar vídeos pode ajudar as pessoas a familiarizar-se com o seu produto ou serviço. Use o vídeo como uma montra virtual e derrube a barreira que o separa dos seus potenciais clientes. O vídeo diverte, educa e permite que seus clientes o conheçam, vejam o seu rosto e oiçam sua voz. Não tenha medo de brincar com vídeo. É uma das maneiras mais eficazes de envolver as pessoas.

RSS: Coloque um feed RSS na sua página. Deixe que as pessoas vejam sinais de uma comunidade activa antes mesmo de entrar no site. Crie um feed RSS de títulos das suas notícias ou agregue outros sites ou blogs ao seu nicho. Deverá ser qualquer coisa pertinente que desperte e mantenha a atenção assim que se entra no site. Apresentar aos utilizadores conteúdos que tenham a ver os seus interessesé uma boa forma de incrementar o tempo de permanência e de encorajar o cibernauta a explorar o site.

Widgets: os widgets permitem que seus utilizadores seleccionem o seu conteúdo favorito e o partilhem onde quiserem. Os widgets de perfis do Twitter permitem que os utilizadores aceder a pequenas informações ou mensagens no no Twitter. assim, cria-se a oportunidade das pessoas acompanharem o seu nome de marca ou de outras palavras-chave específicas. Use, por exemplo, o widget Alltop para partilhar o conteúdo do seu site sobre um tópico especial.

Imagens: As imagens são uma outra maneira de atrair as pessoas para o seu site e de as levar a interagir mais com o seu conteúdo. Uma imagem interessante impele as pessoas a quererem saber mais sobre um conteúdo.

Podcasts: Os Podcasts são bastante simples de se criarem e configurarem e podem ajudar os seus clientes a relacionarem-se consigo a um nível mais pessoal. Permitem que você venda o seu produto e o descreva através das suas próprias palavras, e da sua voz real.

Pesquisas do utilizador: As pesquisas são rápidas e fáceis de incorporar no seu site e dão ao seu público algo através do qual podem interagir. Podem, também, ajudá-lo a fazer alguma pesquisa de mercado, colocando perguntas, pedindo feedback.

Gamification: Toby Barnes (Guardian.co.uk) acredita que a "gamification" é importante, mas que deve ser feita por Game Designers e que não se reduz apenas a um sistema de pontos ou ‘badges’. “Precisa de ser "jogável", de permitir explorar, de ter uma lógica de arquivo e de construção de coisas. Existem emoções que só se experimentam através da interactividade dos jogos”.
