Time to Set the Table - Gorgeous Table Settings for any Occasion

Even with the holiday's now behind us, there are still plenty of dinners, gatherings, and fun get-togethers to be had in 2018!

The best part is you don't have to go to a wedding or an event for a lovely dinner setting, you can create one right at home for any occasion, using simple tricks and inexpensive pieces to make the table as pleasing as the food!

Here are some quick and fun guidelines that I love to use for large events or small get-togethers at my house, all will work for any season or reason!or large events or small get-togethers at my house that will work for any season or reason!

Plates

Informal and Formal Place Settings

So your basic table setting must haves are:

Liner

Flowers

Tea lights/ candles

Silverware
Glassware

A few ways get creative with your setting is by adding lots of color in the decorations such as punches of color in flowers, candles, in decorative plates and even in napkins! By adding some height to the center of the table with flowers or tapered candles dimension and liven up a table, just make sure not to add so much so that you can't have a conversation with the person across from you. Awkward!

For rounder or square tables try a simple bouquet of flowers in the center and for a rectangle or long tables try runners and pieces to go down the center.

This table rocks with the white, black and gold and pink accents. And I just love the little animal seat settings.

1. Wrapping cinnamon sticks with pine leaves in twine is a great and simple accent for the table

2. You can also do the same wrapping around a non-scented candle!

3. Try putting apples or small pumpkins in the center of the table as decor

4. Use cute and simple household items as place settings: corks with sprigs inserted, apple with a tag,

5. Use anything as a rustic flower setting such as mason jars, water jugs, tall glasses, anything you can fit it in. Even a can wrapped in festive paper will do the job!

6. Use gold leafing on large leaves and then script in names or numbers

Honestly - I try to get items that I can afford to either toss or save to reuse another holiday so for me the simpler the better! Small decorative gourds, pumpkins, and even apples are not only easy to paint or stencil on, but can be easily bought for under $5 and tossed or eaten (that apple is breakfast for me!). I even grab a few leaves off of trees by my house and use those instead of buying fake ones from the store. Not only are they real but also really easy to throw away!

Let's pump up your fall décor and to get inspired with these fun DIY pumpkin ideas.

It's that sweet, pumkin-y time of year again! From decorating or turning them into pies, this is the season to enjoy one of my favorite gourds to the fullest! Every year there are new and more creative ways to carve and decorate pumpkins than just the traditional triangle cut out eyes and teeth. Between lights, glitter, gems and some paint they don't even require cutting or gutting at all, and I like that! Less mess is less stress!

Here are 10 great ideas for some pumpkin decor from my Pinterest page that are simple enough to do on your own, as a weekend activity with the kiddos or to at least get those creative juices flowing!

1. Copper

Copper is fun trend that has been popping up recently and can instantly spice up your pumpkin decor. There are many different copper colors and spray paints you can find at Home Depot or you can use this Valspar Copper Spray.

Another great decorating trend are painting pumpkin in ombre. This look can be created in a few ways, here is in a group of slowing changing colors creating a soft ombre collection of pumpkins as a centerpiece.

Here is another way to use the ombre design on a pumpkin where instead the pumpkin is painted in different shades to create an ombre effect. You can also use white, orange and yellow to create an ombre candy corn look!

There are so many great ways to make and use glitter that do not involve the shiny dust that takes millions of years to clean up. There is a variety of glitters that are much larger or that you can make yourself using a shredder or scissors and then adhere with some simple glue or ModPodge.

Do you, like me, have a kid with a crayon bin full of broken and unlabeled crayon bits? Do not despair! There is more you can do with crayons besides coloring with them. The simpler the better right? This pumpkin was simply painted in a glossy white and has black bat cutouts glued to the side. Nice and easy! You can find some like these here or you cut out and fold your own.

Simply arranging and glueing flowers of various sizes to your pumpkin can give it glam. I also really love black painted pumpkins. A simple dark background for the white flowers to shine from.

Winter Wreathing Season

One of the best ways to welcome the coming season into your home is to start at the door - literally! Putting a wreath on your front door can not only invite in the season, but also to your guests!

It's A-Wreath-A-Franklin!! Get it!

There are a lot of wreaths out there (amazing wreaths!) that just give you everything - flowers, berries, pine cones, scents, letters. You name it, it's out there. However, seasons tend to change up pretty quickly these days and while a super decorative wreath is totally GORG on a large house with a lovely walkway and possibly a few lovely potted plants and a welcome map in script with "Welcome friend" at the door, unfortunately, does not have the same appeal on the front of my small New York apartment door with the current "What??" mat outside. (Actually that mat was soo last year, this year my mat just reads"Yes??")

With this being said and the winter season approaching there are talks of moi hosting some dinners and get together's at my place in the near future. So now is a good time to start making the place more inviting and seasonal we'll say.

Now I did mention that I live in a building in NYC so obviously my apartment is small and in charge which means where there is a lack of storage we have to substitute with creativity. I would love to have some large door wreath and decor to bring out every holiday, my place lacks the basement-attic-closets needed to maintain such luxuries.

Instead, I love to find a way to incorporate the seasonal changes while A) not breaking the bank and B) making it as simple and DIY friendly as possible.

There are tons of great examples out there of pretty yet simple wreaths to create. Here are some examples of the ones I like best and that I will be deciding among when I make my own this year. Take a peek at these lovely inspirations and let me know which one you like the best.

With all of the different variations of sofas out there, It is never easy to simply and quickly find the perfect one that fits into your design scheme as well as in your budget.

If you are on a search for a new couch and do not know where to start in your buying process, here is a great cost breakdown of several awesome brands that range from high to lower budgets.

This list has been divided into three categories based on price: 1) high-end furniture in the low thousands and up, 2) mid-range sofas from $1,000 to $3,000, and 3) budget sofas under $1,000.

High-End Sofas: Low Thousands and Up

Baker Furniture
If your tastes run traditional, they're a good source for well-made sofas with hardwood frames and hand-crafted detail work, like coil springs and tufting. We really love the sofa selection at this Chicago store. Pieces feel well curated, with a nice balance of modern and traditional styles, as well as a few top-condition vintage finds thrown into the mix. This is the Celeste Sofa for $3,000.

Roche Bobois
They're known for low-slung modular sofas in a variety of prints and patterns, perhaps most famously the "hippie chic" Mah Jong Sofa by Hans Hopfer. Their upholstery options are uniquely over-the-top, and fit in well with a bohemian high-design aesthetic.

Mid-Range Sofas: $1,000 - $3,000

Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams
Their sofas are well made, with hardwood frames, double-doweled joints, and 8-gauge steel serpentine springs. Prices usually clock in under $3,000, and styles range between modern and traditional. This is the Chester Sofa, an updated version of the classic Chesterfield sofa.

Room & Board

Like their sister store, Crate and Barrel, CB2 uses FSC-certified, kiln-dried hardwood frames. They have simpler, more modern styles that can go as low as $600 or as high as $1,500. This is the armless Draper Sofa for $800.

West Elm
Their specialty is apartment-sized furniture for design-minded people on a budget. Styles are basic, modern, and a little on the chunky side. This is the Sutton Sofette, starting at $600.

IKEA
Their sofas have gotten better in recent years and, although they're not as durable as higher end brands, lines like the Karlstad and Lillberg are of decent quality. Shown left is an apartment-sized version of the Karlstad Sofa for $600.

Chiasso
This online and Chicago-based store carries several modern sofas under the $1,000 mark. Most styles have metal bases and hardwood frames. This is the Spezia Sofa for $800.

Overstock.com
This online store has a wide range of discounted living room furniture, some good and some bad. They also carry several knockoffs, like this LC White Leather Sofa for $690. To get a sense of quality, read the customer reviews for products.

Murals are Awesome!

While I will not promote illegal wall or building tagging, I am totally for wall art and murals and there is plenty to be found around New York. Some are cleverly hidden on the sides of buildings are garages while others are bright and shining and full view. While we were just walking around the block looking for ice cream we discovered these awesome paintings painted on the walls just under a bridge in Queens.

It was a fun and quick distraction from the heat and something we would have never noticed if we never turned left. Sometimes all it takes is turning a different corner and something cool will be waiting for you. Lesson learned!

And we found these outside a school in Brooklyn last winter.

My Current Obsession - Reused Paint From Home Depot

So I can't deny - I'm kind of obsessed with the paint department in Home Depot. I will find a reason to look and perhaps buy and don't mind that I have to lug them all on the train. I simply must see if there are any new paint colors that need a home!

LOVE THIS CLOSET (don't you?)

In my mind I have a Pinterest board of my dream closet and now that I've seen my my recent trips that they swap out the colors often, there might be a chance that I will get that dreamy..... charcoal grey

Aside from the fact that the colors jump randomly from bright to simpler hues, the price is extremely discounted so it makes for much more easier to have grand visions for upcoming projects.

The crazy thing? Today I was back (of course) and it was there. First there were only a couple lovely lavender Ralph Lauren textured paint that wasn't exactly what I was looking for but was in the family of my color scheme so I took it along with another of what seemed like a greenish-grey paint and then I continued to shop around.

Deciding to give it just one more go I went BACK to the paints section (I mean it's already on the way to the cash register, so why not?) and - Wait, what??There were ALL NEW colors! Even the lids were wet! Not only did the HDG (Home Depot Guy) come around with an assortment of new colors, in it he also put a sweet CHARCOAL(ish) color paint. Not exactly my grey but a very nice version of it, especially for $9!

So do you know what happened next when I started to grab it up and put it in the cart?? The HDG man came around with a can of CHARCOAL GREY paint! That's right, my color! What?!

When I saw I couldn't help but let out a "hummana hummana hummana..." and then grabbed em!! Yes, finally! I happened to scoop up a few others that could definitely be used around the house and left totally happy and excited about my score.

Coming soon - my dream closet in the works. Omg I can't wait to see them on the wall. Stay tuned ya'll!

Cinco de Mayo!!

Yay! So not only is it Friday and it's rainy (and that sucks) but it's Cinco de Mayo (and that's great!)

Then I got to thinking: what the heck is Cinco de Mayo anyway? It is just the name of the day? Is it a holiday? A happy one? A sad one? I'm here ready to drink and celebrate...but porque?

So I decided to look it up online (thanks again Google) and found some really cool facts that I also shared with my friends and now will share with you! Then you can share with your friends and so on and we can all drink and eat and celebrate and know the heck why!

Cinco de Mayo is:

The Mexican Independence Day? No, it's not. The Mexican Independence Day is actually celebrated September 16.
Meant to honor the Battle of Puebla that took place May 5, 1862. During the battle, also known as El Dia de la Batalla de Puebla, a group of just over 4,000 Mexican soldiers were outnumbered by the well equipped French troops. Against all odds, while less than 100 Mexican soldiers perished in the battle, the French lost the battle and had about 500 French casualties.
Celebrated in the States, but is not celebrated in Mexico. Cinco de Mayo is typically a day of eating tacos and drinking margaritas but just like you won't find corned beef and green beer in Ireland on St. Patrick's Day, you won't find ground beef tacos, nachos, and frozen margaritas in Mexico on Cinco de Mayo.

Another fun fact - there are over 81 million avocados eaten on Cinco de Mayo every year!

Falling into Fall - End of Summer recap

I took this lovely shot. I love seeing the colors change in the fall, don't you?

I can't believe that it's almost fall...again! Is it just me or does it feel like we were just in October a few months ago? Is there some mega force that is making us spin faster and our days go quicker?? I wonder....

In the meantime I'll readily admit- I love the fall. Maybe it's the color changing of the trees, the brisk and crisp weather, the comfyness of sweaters...or that I just keep missing summer...but either way, it's coming no matter which way you spin it and I'm ready to embrace it.

This fall is particularly exciting because I will be taking part of so many great projects such as;

my first tiling project
repurposing furniture projects
apple picking
a ton of volunteering- Habitat for Humanity is one
stamping, stenciling and cutting projects
making new lighting fixtures

Well, I suppose apple picking might not qualify as an actual "project" but I'm excited about it still as this will be my first year going! (Another thing that I keep happening to miss over the years.)

As for the others, remember when I scored these awesome tiles? Well they are going up! I've been debating if I wanted to use them in the bathroom or the kitchen and I've think I've decided on some kitchen action. Considering that the surface is a excellent shape and surface and location, it's bound to make the kitchen one of the spiffiest rooms in the house!

In the meantime I have been doing a lil here-and-there projects, mainly with paint

Small Spaces with Huge Potential; Pint-Sized Offices

If there is one thing that I've learned from living in cities is that there are always going to be space limitations. Just trying to squeeze a living room and a bedroom into a studio can be a challenge, let alone a work or an office space From those who solely work out of their home, to kids working on their homework, to workaholic moms who work on the same table while their son creates a masterpiece (a-hem), it's almost a necessity to have a place to organize yourself, gather your thoughts and to get some work done.

This being said one of the best and easiest solutions to creating a home office starts with a simple conversion of even the smallest space; a closet! While many of us use our closets as storage for the many worn (and many new and forgotten) clothes that we have stowed away, when taken into prospective and revamped with a bit of creativity, simple furnishings and shelves can turn even the smallest space into a functional home office!

So here are some great solutions for turning your closet from cramped to cozy!

Add shelving. Taking full advantage of available wall space by installing SHELVES or a shelving system. You can even mix and match wood and wire shelves and maintain the harmony by adding matching STORAGE BINS.
Dress up your focal wall. Add character can easily be achieved by using a simple yet decorative WALLPAPER. It is not necessary to wall paper the entire closet either. Simply add to the back wall to give it a bit of interest.
Remove those closet doors. While I personally perfect to close off an office (out of sight, out of mind) you can rid of the closet doors completely and substitute with DRAPERIES (Not curtains, curtains are for kitchens). From solid colors to the many fun prints, you can add a little pizzazz and still keep the privacy of your new home office.
KIS (Keep It Stylish). Don't let your new office feel like an office cubicle, add color! Now keep it mind to not go too crazy. This is an office therefor it would be best to work with simple and cohesive color schemes. This will help your office looking organized and clean. It will also make it feel even bigger.
Let there be light! Many closets are built with very small and unattractive lights, if any at all! There are many simple light fixtures that you could use from IKEA HANGING LAMPS, to small TABLE LAMPS that should add suitable lighting for your work space
Chic your seat. While your office chair can be multi-functional and you could potentially just pull it from outside given the amount of space you have, chose a seat that is comfortable and fits the tone of your office. Remember, this is a chair you will potentially be for quite a few hours mulling away at, it mine as well be one that you enjoy all that time.

While I haven't had a chance to create anything new recently, the need to replace my current bedroom dresser has got itching to work on a custom one for my own. So over the last few days I've been searching for that perfect six-drawer dresser that just needs a little love and a fresh coat of paint.

Naturally I have been raiding Pinterest for inspiration and have come across some really beautiful examples of DIY done perfectly!

Snowmazing! Beautiful Pics of Snow

So while I was born in the January, I would dare to say that I am far from being a "winter baby". While I am sure that ski trips and icebergs are great and all, I would prefer a nice sandy beach, blue waters and 80 degree weather over snow any day. At the same time, I can't deny the hint of excitement I felt when I was hearing of the impending, "epic" snow storm Nemo that was heading our way last week. Perhaps it's all the drastic changes of the seasons these years (*cough* global warming *cough*) but not having a traditional and snowy winter I was even, suffice to say, excited about the storm! And while I might not be the biggest fan of ice cold fingers and toes, little Pumpkinhead loves every single flake.

Of course once I woke in the morning and began to survey the aftermath of Nemo, I was relieved that instead of finding myself burrow out the front door and finding a wild winter wonderland, instead everything was nicely coated with a pillowy layer of perfect snowball, snow angle snow.

While this blizzard fulfills my winter/snow quota for the rest of the season, it was a great reminder of the wonderful beauty and purity of snow. Between snow covered cities, to sculptures (being natural or manmade) to places where snow lives all year around, all are wonderful reminders of the many beautiful forms of Mother Nature.

The Art of Hanging Art and Pictures

No matter how many pieces of furniture I own or place in a room, I always feel a sense of emptiness whenever I have bare walls. It would always seem that I capture the most wonderful and memorable moments yet I have them all hoarded on my phone or my computer. Or I will buy a great piece of artwork (or find a neat African carved head by the alley way- post to come) and plan on putting them up but never manage to get them showcased out to the world. While I may share many of my favorite pics on Facebook or Instagram, there is just something about a hung picture or artwork hung that instantly transports me back to that memory and brings back happiness and excitement.

This being said it can be a challenge to determine which, out of all the pictures or art, is best to use and then the second most important step- how to display them? From using frames with a variation of sizes, styles and colors to the many hanging options, its almost limitless the number of ways to do so.

Here are a few great examples I've come across that show the many different solutions. They are all great ways to use to show off your favorite art, photos or the combination of the two to bring about a sense of nostalgia and warmth to your home.

As much as I love bright and lively colors in spaces, sometimes it's the absence of color that can have the biggest impact! This condo (which is Hollywood Glam at its best) is detailed to the nines with an assortment of amazing textures, textiles and high end furniture. Using detailed stenciling and over-exaggerated custom pieces is a perfect example that if you go colorless how to showcase your home by using extraordinary accents and details.

Where the home lacks in color, it sure made up for with incredible design!

There are so many ways to dress up dining chairs with colorful fabrics and graphics, but what about a chair covered in bright fish, grass or flames?

There are so many ways to dress up dining chairs with colorful fabrics and graphics, but what about a chair covered in bright fish, grass or flames? On my visit into the D&D Building in NYC I stopped by the showroom, where I roamed around giddily and snapped pictures of these awesome Pop Art chairs.

Not only do the chairs come in a variation of shapes, sizes and styles but you can customize each design with their stock or your very own! Here are a few pieces that I came across and was instantly attracted to.

This chair reminds me of the Disney movie Up. Doesn't it? So much fun

As soon as you enter the showroom you are greeted with this bold array of colors and art! I love how simplistic the top row is with the rainbow of colors and their organic counterparts on the bottom showcasing the many options to make these chairs come alive! I especially enjoyed the fire chair! I think the associate was over my very many bad puns, one of which was "Oh, that chair is so hot!"

Outstanding Religious Architecture

A little something special that just wows and stops me in my tracks, demanding attention of those who believe or not. The retro décor and collection of old records creates a wonderfully nostalgic atmosphere in this music room. I love the muted pink and orange wallpaper.

Keep it Up! Above Average Attics

Alongside closets, corners and nooks - attics are certainly underestimated for their potential as quaint but useable space. While they are mainly used for storing Christmas decor, seasonal clothing bins and probably loads of miscellaneous and dusty bins and boxes, with a little TLC they could become the perfect comfy and cozy area for guests or even for a simple retreat.

Many kitchens in the city are usually not only cramped but often lack sufficient storage space but with a little creativity and resourcefulness even the smallest kitchen can suit your everyday needs. I love using chalkboard paint and adding a small built in banquette with an octagon table gives this small kitchen a comfy, almost coffee house feel. I also love the multiple light fixtures.

Portable and fancy, Blofield is a company that specializes in air furniture. Yes, blow-up goodies not meant for your bedroom. The company offers a small collection of one, two and three seater sofas, available in a handful of colors. They pieces have built in wheels, and comes with an electric pump that can provide seating in just five minutes. While I'm sure it is a great convenience and surely portable, I cannot expect it to be anymore comfortable than sitting on my old neighbors preserved, plastic covered couches. And with a price tag averaging £425.00 (approximately $700 US dollars) it had better have one amazing puncture repair kit.

Wednesday Craigslist Find: Inexpenseive MidCentury DayBed

From the natural wood stains, simplistic lines and to the beautifully crafted wooden legs, I have a huge soft spot in my hear for MidCentury furniture. So today while on my Wednesday Craigslist spree, you can imagine my excitement when I came upon this danish daybed on sale for a mere $650!

While I could forgo the floral pattern, new reupholstery and a fresh stain could easily be a simple and inexpensive solution, which would make this look like new. Considering a piece like this would easily sell for twice as much in a showroom, this is definitely a steal.
