Watchmen has been the center of a lot of controversy the last few months with the battle between studios looking to stop the movie from even being released into theaters.

The battle between Fox and Warner Bros. seems to have stopped. It has come to an amicable conclusion that seems to have made everyone happy.

At least Fox seems happy with the large payoff Warner Bros. has left them with. The good news is for fans though. The movie will go forward with its release date on March 6th. Many thought that would never end up happening. Fox will end up earning some of the profits from the movie’s release and merchandising from the movie, but that is all. This gives fans a chance for one big sigh of relief.

The final poster for the film was released by Warner Bros. on Wednesday. What do you think? Are you ready to see Watchmen?

G.I. Joe Posters

Another one of the big movies coming out this summer is the live action take on the popular 1980s cartoon series, G.I. Joe.

This one has been in the works for awhile now, and the movie will finally hit the big screen on August 7th. A late summer release date, which usually means a studio doesn’t think a movie can do a big take at the box office. August is usually a quiet month for movie releases. The big dates are truly in May and the 4th of July holiday.

G.I. Joe: The Rise of the Cobra will star Channing Tatum, Marlon Wayans, Sienna Miller and Rachel Nichols. Six posters were released by Paramount Pictures on Tuesday for the upcoming movie release. You can see the posters below. What do you think? Are you excited for the cartoon to hit the big screen? As a fan of the cartoon myself, I’m curious to see what they do with the series in bringing it to the big screen.

The Spirit Trailer C

Another Superhero movie is coming. The third trailer for The Spirit which starts out the same as Trailer B and then goes into different scenes at about 30 seconds.

Adapted from Will Eisner's legendary comic strip, The Spirit, an action-adventure-romance, is the story of a former rookie cop who returns mysteriously from the dead as the Spirit (Gabriel Macht) to fight crime from the shadows of Central City. His arch-enemy, the Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) has a different mission: he's going to devastate the Spirit's beloved city as he pursues his own version of immortality. The Spirit tracks this cold-hearted killer from Central City's rundown warehouses, to the damp catacombs, to the windswept waterfront ... all the while facing a bevy of beautiful women who either want to seduce, love or kill the masked crusader.

Terminator Salvation New Picture

Things are moving full speed ahead with Terminator Salvation and its promotion. The movie won’t hit until May 22nd, 2009, but this week we had two trailers that have made me quite excited to see this new Terminator movie.

Coming Soon also had some information from a set visit that took place over the summer. These are just some of the details. You can read more here .

- We visited several of the studio sets as well as a couple of the locations in Albuquerque that doubled for post-Judgment Day L.A. The personal highlight of the trip for me was watching a large vehicle bust through a wall and roll over human skulls as a T-600 patrolled nearby. Against this backdrop were some of the biggest explosions I’ve ever seen on a set while doing a visit.

- Director McG was very energetic, very open, and a lot of fun to talk to. He was so eager to chat with us that the crew started getting annoyed that we were distracting him from shooting. McG knows he has a lot to prove and he’s doing his best to make a good “Terminator” film. Based on what I saw, he’s on the right track.

I’ve watched all three films and I watch the television series as well. I really can’t wait for the new film. The Los Angeles Time released this new picture from the movie on Wednesday, and we see Christian Bale in his role of John Connor with some cool looking robots. Check out the picture below.

New Wolverine Pictures

We just keep getting more and more pictures from X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Last week, Empire had new pictures of Wolverine and Gambit and now 20th Century Fox has released five more images from Wolverine.

This is all in preparation for the release of the first trailer in a few weeks time. It is said to hit theaters in front of The Day The Earth Stood Still which will be released on December 12th. This will make it an early Christmas gift for X-Men fans. If Wolverine does well in theaters, an X-men 4 is not far off.

Kung Fu Panda DVD review

Dreamworks did something different with the release of Kung Fu Panda earlier this month. They released the DVD on a Sunday with a big bash in Hollywood where Angelina Jolie even came out to play with the big panda.

Kung Fu Panda tells the story of Po the Panda, played here by Jack Black, who dreams of one day becoming a Kung Fu master. His father wants him to become another noodle man, but Po doesn’t want any part of that. When he lands in the middle of a special ceremony searching for the great dragon warrior, those making the choice pick him as the dragon warrior.

This shocks everyone, including the five that thought one of them would be chosen. Their master doesn’t think Po will be able to do it. He plans make it hard on Po, so that he will quit and a true dragon warrior can be found. However, Po shocks them all once again by staying and completing each task put forth to him. It is only when he accepts himself as who he is can he become a true dragon warrior who must battle a former student of his master that has gone down a dark path. With humor and fun, he succeeds, and he becomes a master in his own right. His dream has come true.

Kung Fu Panda was released on DVD on November 9th in a special package with a new adventure of Po’s, The Secrets of the Furious Five. In this short cartoon film, he must teach the new bunnies all about Kung Fu and how it is about more than just fighting. The DVD’s come together, and there are bonus features on both. This DVD set is a perfect addition to any family’s collection. A good story told with humor and a lesson for children of all age’s. With the voices of some of Hollywood’s biggest stars including Dustin Hoffman, Angelina Jolie and Jack Black, this movie even has something for parents to enjoy. The DVD is in stores now.

Terminator Salvation Concept Art

New concept art released from the movie Terminator Salvation.

Things have been fairly quiet on the news front for the next Terminator film due out this summer. McG has wrapped up filming, and the movie is in production right now. Yesterday, a new picture was released to fans, a piece of artwork that gives an idea of what we can expect from a post apocalyptic Los Angeles.

If you look closely at the picture below, you will see a shattered and destroyed Capital Records building - a landmark in the city of Los Angeles. Here it rests in two pieces. Could There Be A ‘Lost’ Movie?

For four seasons now, millions of “Lost” fans have tuned in each week to follow the mysterious, deeply complex adventures of Jack, Kate, John, Sawyer, Hurley and rest of the Island’s ever-growing population.

But with only two seasons left in what’s arguably the most successful episodic series on television, producers are already looking towards the future…and that could potentially mean a trip to Hollywood for the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815.

Speaking with MTV News, “Lost” co-creator and executive producer J.J. Abrams said that while he still believes a theatrical leap is doubtful, he’s now less against the idea than in the past. And that’s mostly because there’s now a firm end-point for the series: May 2010.

“The one thing that makes you think maybe there could be [a movie],” stated Abrams, “is that ABC agreed to end the series after six years. Which is a gift, because you know you won’t have years seven and eight where you’re thinking ‘they should’ve ended at year six,’ and you know how to pace yourself so that you know how to end the series.”

With the clock now ticking towards the show’s completion, the “Star Trek” helmer is slowly growing intrigued in the idea of continuing the story.

“The only reason why I think maybe there would be a movie,” he explained, “is that by doing that — which is hopefully the right way to go and that’s it — you do have that sense of, well, it didn’t go on any longer and therefore is there something else that you could do? So there’s a chance, but my gut is it would never happen.”

Paul W.S. Anderson Writing Resident Evil 4 Script

Do we really need another Resident Evil sequel? Paul W.S. Anderson thinks so. Of course, he isn’t known for his good ideas, or filmmaking skills, or… well, all he he’s really known for is having made some really shitty genre films.

The director tells the Sunday Sun that he’s writing “an adaptation of the Long Good Friday right now, set in present-day Miami. Then I will probably write Resident Evil 4.”

It was reported a while back that he was in talks to make another film, but this looks like the first confirmation that he’s going to give it a go. Hey, at least he’s not trying to direct a new Beverly Hills Cop or remake Conan. The Resident Evil franchise is like a little doggy cage, keeping him busy while also keeping hims from finding new projects to ruin.

We have six new Watchmen character poster hitting the Internet on various websites. This movie is going into hyperdrive. Some are saying this is because the second trailer for the movie is heading into theaters this weekend in front of Quantum of Solace.

Bond is also hosting the first true Star Trek trailer. We’ve had a teaser up to this point. The trailers for both films hit this weekend though, so it is a big weekend for a movies. You can check out the six posters from Watchmen below. The movie hits theaters March 6.

Shazam: A big Comic Book Movie

It was Voltaire who once said that if God didn’t exist, it would be necessary to invent him. It was screenwriter John August who said the same thing about Captain Marvel.

“If Captain Marvel didn’t pre-exist and there was just an idea of a 13-year-old boy who can speak a magic word and turn into a superhero — that’s a great idea,” the writer declared on the eve of turning in his completed draft for “Shazam.” “If it hadn’t been around for 50 years and someone just wrote it as a spec script, that would sell cause it’s a really good idea.”

It’s an idea whose time has come. A comic book film which centers on an unlikely hero, “Shazam” is “very different” from all “the other flying people in tights movies,” insisted August. “It’s not Spider-Man plus jokes. There’s really good comic potential there,” he asserted, revealing that his film — an origin story — owes as much to “Big” as it does to “Superman.”

“Yeah, I avoid saying that because that incenses certain people,” August laughed of the comparison. “But the people that are going to go see this movie opening weekend are going to be excited to see [action and comedy] together.”

And they’re going to see it very soon, August confessed. “I’m turning in ‘Shazaam’ tomorrow,” he said. “Literally, you’re keeping me from the keyboard!”

“I knew what I was getting into,” he continued. “In a sense, even with a character that doesn’t have the giant spotlight on him like Superman or Batman, there’s a tremendously loyal fanbase who have very clear expectations about what they think a Captain Marvel movie should be. What people tend to really forget is that I’m just pushing words around on paper and doing the best job I can. But it’s weird that there’s such a spotlight on a movie that’s just now 119 pages of 12-point Courier.”

Saw V heads to theaters on Friday just in time for Halloween. This mean that once again there is a blood drive set up through the American Red Cross.

Brad Pitt Going On A Sci-Fi Odyssey for Warner Bros.

Brad Pitt must have really liked going Greek for “Troy” because he’s now interested in tackling Homer’s other great epic, “The Odyssey”.

According to Variety, he’s teaming with director George Miller and Warner Bros. to bring the epic poem to outer space, with Pitt playing the title role of Odysseus in a re-imagining of the classic fable.

If you escaped high school and college without reading “The Odyssey,” here’s a refresher — it’s technically a sequel to “The Iliad,” dealing with the aftermath of the Trojan War. It’s centered around the return journey of Odysseus, the most clever of Greek soldiers and the builder of the famous Trojan horse. All he wants to do is get home to his wife and son, but he’s constantly waylaid by sexy sea-nymphs, witches, cyclops, and monsters.

But don’t look for Pitt to adopt the enormous muscles and skimpy leather he wore in “Troy” (sorry, girls.) With Miller looking to transfer the story to a futuristic setting in outer space, it should be really interesting to see Pitt venture into sci-fi, a genre he flirted with in “Twelve Monkeys.

And “The Odyssey” is certainly a story that lends itself to revision — you probably remember the last time it was seen onscreen was in the Coen Brothers’ classic “O Brother, Where Art Thou” (and you have to laugh that Pitt will essentially be playing the same role as his good friend, George Clooney) .

So, what do you think, readers? Excited to see Brad Pitt play another swashbuckling hero? Curious to see him set in space? Or do the classical purists among you wish they’d stop revising, and set “The Odyssey” in ancient Greece again?

Daniel Craig Turns Down Thor

The scoop lords over at IESB have let us in on some saucy news! It appears capitalist commander Sanchez has found out that Daniel Craig turned down the role of Thor!

IESB asked if Craig was interested in doing something a little different character-wise, like Thor? Craig said no, he turned it down and laughed about it.

Sanchez continued, "seriously, I heard the folks over at Marvel had you on a short list to be Thor."

Craig said yes they [Marvel] did approach him but he turned it down. He added jokingly, it would have been too much of a power trip, both Bond and Thor, and running around with long hair and a hammer.

May your laughter turn to locusts that eat for face Craig! The thunder god will not be scoffed!

I am glad Craig turned down Thor, I like him as an actor but I can’t see him in a winged helmet holding an Uru hammer. Brad Pitt on the other hand, is man that was born to wear a winged helmet. I just wish he was taller, but platform boots could save the day. Thor wore pretty magnificent boots and building them up would certainly work for both practical and aesthetic purposes.

Would any of you have like to see Craig as Thor? I like him as James Bond but am glad he passed on this one. If any of you disagree with me, I would love to hear your reasons why or even alternate casting choices.

Jackson Confirms more Fury in IronMan 2

Not that IronMan didn’t pan out as a wet dream to geeks, the one geektastic moment of IronMan was the stinger at the end of the credits with Samuel L Jackson putting flesh to the role of Nick Fury introducing himself to Stark.

Obvious to comic fans everywhere, this was to allude to the potential Avengers movie. But does this mean that Nick Fury will be more predominate in the much anticipated IronMan 2.

IESB.net says:

Jackson replied that as a matter of fact, IRON MAN director Jon Favreau spoke to him at the Scream Awards last night, (dammit, IESB was there but neither of them walked the red carpet!), and Favreau told Jackson that Nick Fury would have a much more prominent role in the second one. Which honestly isn’t hard to accomplish considering he was relegated to the end of the film with a very short cameo.

Samuel L Jackson was an obvious pick for Fury since they wanted to match the Ultimates version of the character which was drawn in Jackson’s likeness. (Otherwise I would have wanted the late Jack Pallance to play him - thats always how I pictured him)

Jackson is a geek. Oh, I know he is all badass and people will pay him money just to say muthafukka. But remember this is the man who got the role of Mace Windu because he ASKED for it. He also geekgasmed on Jay Leno over his role in Star Wars by showing off his action figure. He loves this stuff.

So I had no doubt that the same actor would play Fury. Jackson just would want it that way. But the bigger question was whether he would be written into the story. I am happy to hear that it is.

This logical step that Marvel Films is taking to tie in all their movies is only going to spell out for success.

Watchmen Ending Changed?

Remember that Watchmen test screening I told you about last week? Well it happened, and buzz coming out of the screening has the Watchmen fan community throwing a hissy fit. Before you get nervous, know this - everyone says the film is awesome. However, the fans are upset over how Zack Snyder’s ending varies from that of the one in the graphic novel.

And there really is no way of talking about the ending of a film without spoilers being involved. That said, you have been warned. Story after the jump.

A couple of people who attended the screening posted reports on the IMDb message boards, only to have their posts quickly removed. Nothing has been officially confirmed, so PLEASE consider this with a grain of salt for now. According to the reports, the climax of the graphic novel where Veidt releases his squid in New York City, was not in the movie. Instead, Dr. Manhattan and Ozymandias build a machine that mimics Dr Manhattan’s powers and Ozy uses the machine to set off atomic bomb like explosions in various cities around the world.

The exclusion of the squid is very puzzling, especially considering the numerous reports from a variety of sources that the squid was included in the film. Even cast members have made mention of a beastie in the film’s climax. Who knows, there is always the possibility that Snyder shot multiple endings, although I’m doubtful. The amount of money it would take to film either ending would be substantial. So I doubt Warner Bros would have allowed him to film both.

I’ve talked with a couple of my friends who are fans of the book, and many of them were quick to admit that unleashing the squid was probably not the best way to go. The new ending supposedly works thematically, and isn’t that what is really important? I understand that part of being a fanboy is to expect a big screen adaptation to be an exact replication of what he’s read on paper. I mean, what would fandom be without the constant bickering over the different changes made from book to screen? But is it possible that Snyder could have went for a better ending?

Update: Our friends at Collider have an interview with Kevin Smith, where he talks about having seen Watchmen. Here is his response to the question about if the ending is different:

“It's a little different. While it is a slight departure, it actually makes sense in the context of the story because it brings the characters back into it. It kind of makes the movie more about them by the end of it because of the switch they made. I would never say that Alan Moore fucked it up or something. I love the ending of the Watchmen comic book, but I think this ending works just as well.”

what I inferred from Peter's post is that Ozymandias uses the machine to fool the world into thinking that Manhattan himself has intervened, from his self-imposed exile on Mars. this has the effect of establishing the other-world external threat to humanity Wehtam rightly identifies as central to Watchmen's resolution. the issue for me is why Manhattan would be complicit in the creation of this machine. presumably Ozymandias fools him into believing it is for another purpose. but could you ever really deceive Dr Manhattan? I agree with Diesel, only I'd go further - take it with a mountain of salt at this stage ≠ )

Who gives a funk? Materialising a giant squid in New York was the lamest part of the book - really stupid and totally at odds with the realistic treatment of the characters etc. Idiot comic book fanboys need to get over themselves.

The thing is it's not supposed to be a squid it's supposed to be an extra terrestrial (possibly extra dimensional) attack i.e. an other worldly, external threat to humanity, that's why it's supposed to bring us all together, it's a common fear. Setting a bunch of nuclear style explosions off in various cities around the world would be more likely to cause a nuclear holocaust through retaliation...but then I guess it depends how it's handled in the film!

If there is no squid in the movie there wouldn't be a secret island where all the writers, artists and scientists etc for the comedian to find and then why is the comedian killed at the beginning? removing the squid really rips the thread out of the movie and a lot of stuff would need to be changed so that if flows again, cause if its replaced with devices that Dr Manhattan and Ozymandias are building it will really change Dr Manhattans story. Also why would Dr Manhattan need help 'building' a machine? he can do it with his mind.

The film is the film and the novel is the novel. As long as it plays well and doesn't pull some shit like the ending of The Golden Compass, I'm not too worried. I don't need the film to fullfill the ethos and mythos of the novel, I have that on my shelf. What the film can do for me is show me a larger than life and spectacular painting of the story.

My main problem with this: in the comic, I think part of what horrified the Comedian so much when he discovered Veidt's plot was that killing millions with a fake alien squid is such a crazy idea that it really does seem like a sick joke on a huge scale, hence his lines to Moloch "I mean, this joke, I mean, I thought *I* was the comedian, y'know?" and "I mean, what's funny? What's so goaddamned funny? I don't get it. Somebody explain...somebody explain it to me." I think this may have been part of Moore's motivation for having a character called "The Comedian" be so central to the story in the first place, because it ties in with the enormous joke Veidt pulls on humanity at the end. Whereas, just faking some explosions due to experiments with high-tech forms of energy isn't weird enough to have that "joke" aspect, it's more like the plot of a Bond villain or something. And of course, making Veidt's plot no longer seem like a bizarre joke also takes away most of the relevance of the bloody-smiley-face motif which appears throughout the comics and is sort of the "logo" of the entire series.

i'll wait to see it before i decide. but i will say that changing such a crucial part of the story, and saying things like "But is it possible that Snyder could have went for a better ending?" is exactly why alan moore gets upset, and why he has taken his name off this project. i cringe at the visual of Ozy & Dr M building a machine together, but we will see.

i think you only touched on the real story here - 'everyone says the film is awesome'. you only have to watch the teaser trailer to see that Snyder has shown a slavish devotion to the graphic novel. it will be fascinating to see if and where he has changed it, and to think (and talk endlessly) about his reasoning for doing so. see below ?)

My biggest concern is that this new ending might take out the "other worldly" threat that the giant "alien" squid presented. One reason that Watchmen hit me so hard when I read it is how it ties in to "real world" conspiracy theories. The story goes that Wernher von Braun (famous German/American rocket scientist) was quoted in the sixties that their were forces orchestrating various threats in order to bring the world together under one government. They started with Communism, then went to Global Terrorism, then to an extra terrestrial threat. He supposedly said this in the 1960s. I just don't see how a Manhattan Machine is going to work to incorporate that threat and keep that otherworldly element in place.

I consider Watchmen to be a fairly hard comic to get accurate on the big screen in terms of sticking to the plot, so I think going for an ending that works on screen better than the squid is a good idea and fine by me. However, it will ruin the one line summary of the Watchmen: psychic space vaginas save the world.

The change probably does work for the film's context, but now you've officially lost the vote of confidence from the purists. It will be intresting to see how many people will judge the film just on the changed ending and not the rest of the film.

Hmmm...will be very disappointed if this is true, but I can see the part about the squid not being "global" enough. But, I don't see why would Dr. Manhattan help to build a machine that mimics his powers. :/ Doesn't seem very canon to me. IDK.

Terence Howard Surprised By Iron Man 2 Recasting

Last week it was reported that Don Cheadle had been signed to replace Terence Howard in Iron Man 2. Initial speculation was that Marvel had a falling out with the actor over salary requirements. When asked about the announcement on NPR, Howard explains his confusion over the entire situation.

“Yeah, I found that out, too,” said Howard. “It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation. Just…up and vanished. I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something. But apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren’t worth the paper that they’re printed on, sometimes. Promises aren’t kept, and good faith negotiations aren’t always held up. Even friendships, people you support…”

I’ve never understood the concept of contracts in Hollywood. From what I understand, they’re basically meaningless. It should be noted that Howard never specifically denies the implications that he was looking for more money, probably because its true. He mentions that “good faith negotiations” with Marvel were not “held up”. The movie studio probably should have given the star an explanation before moving on to other choices (it should be noted that we don’t know Marvel’s side of the story).
