Auckland has police people on bicycles!

Apparently it is a fairly new initiative ... I can't hand on heart say that they look very 'chic' but I think the idea is pretty cool ... and their outfits could have been a whole lot worse

They might want to consider some fenders for winter - mud splatter can really ruin your day!

I spotted them again later that day ... in Albert Park. They have obviously discovered already that Auckland roads are pretty alien landscapes and not very conducive to cycling. Cycling in Albert Park is much more pleasant on a sunny day!

Christmas tree transport

I took a jaunt out along the waterfront to buy a Christmas tree form the Helicopter rescue people this weekend

I picked a little beauty and transported it home .... by bicycle of course.

Here it is with all its trinkets and tinsel in place and being appreciated with a glass of sherry!

A reader sent me in this picture ...

Apparently, this is the new electric bike of one of the Waterfront Auckland staff.

I am very pleased about this as ... in a recent discussion with a different WA person I was told they were looking at providing infrastructure for all cyclists - both families at the weekends and sports cyclists. So I replied "what about all the other cyclists? You know the ones that just use a bicycle to get from A to B" he had no idea that there may actually be a large number of cyclists that didn't fit into his two neat piles of 'families' or 'lycra' with different requirements.

Perhaps this lady with the new electric bicycle can educate him about the realities of cycling in Auckland ...

Triathlon troubles

A very stylish but displaced cyclist trying to get from the ferry terminal to Newmarket through the World Champion Triathlon barricades on Saturday

Hopefully the mission was accomplished.

The husband and I were also trying to get to and from the market and trying to figure out if it was acceptable to cycle the wrong way down a one way street in full view of two motorbike cops given the circumstances. We erred on the side of caution in the end and took an alternate route.

We toyed with trying to ride up the actual cycle race track, but we decided that convincing the orange jacketed folk that we were in the 'fruit and veg' category of the triathlon was probably going to be a hard sell!

Accomplished!

Not only does she keep 'prehistoric' politicians in line and navigate Auckland on her bicycle ...

... she managed to carry her bicycle down these steps with one hand while talking on the phone, and nod hello to me - without even breaking a sweat!

This is my neighbour bringing home his new bicycle

Very styley!

When I first moved into the building a few years ago, my neighbour would look at me in a puzzled/fascinated sort of way, and I understand I was known as 'the bicycle lady'. After a while we got talking during encounters in the lift and conversation often moved to bicycles. Then one day a couple of second hand bikes appeared outside their apartment - they had decided to give it a go. They liked it. Now they have bought brand new bicycles as they are using bicycles so much and traveling quite a distance on them ... nice!
