now i will be honest... st patricks day is not really my favorite.

i'm not irish, and i don't really like green.

BUT as i started to plan this playdate & create all the details- it really grew on me.

the day of the playdate was gloomy and rainy but as i drove to

drop off my daughter at school we saw a beautiful rainbow!

she was so excited about it & i had to admit - i sort of get st patricks day now.

DIY cupcake hydrangea

Planning parties can add up - from the food to the decor, games and so on. To cut cost I look for something that inspires me and try to do it myself. I was inspired by these lovelies:

I would have loved to use them but at $32.00 each that was a no go for my budget, so instead i recalled this fun (and budget conscious) project. and yes i am aware that these are orchids, but those are too hard to make!

For this project you will need

* About 23 cupcake liners (per ball)

*Styrofoam ball (mine measured about 16 inches all the way around)

*Glue gun

*Pins

* Wooden dowel

Step 1:

Put your dowel in first! I learned this hard way. i started from the top and then inserted my wooden dowel crushing some of the cupcake liners.

Step 2:

Flip your cup cake liners inside out.

Step 2 (1/2 ish)

The first ball i did i started from the top and worked my way down and it got a little tight at the bottom and didn't look as great. i guess it didn't really matter, no one could see the bottom.

The second ball that i did, i started in the middle where most of the focus was and worked my way up then did the bottom. This seemed to work a bit better for some reason.

Step 3

Place a sewing pin in the center of the liner to hold it in place

Step 4

Use a glue gun to close up the gaps, not all the liners will fit perfectly so its better to have them spaced out and glue them together verses having them smashed to tightly next to each other.

The photo above is how it turned out. (i know its sideways.) I uploaded it and tried a handful of times to get it uploaded correctly but it was not in the cards. I know your probably thinking that i didn't want you to see how bad the bottom looked, but that is not the case. I just can't get blogger to like me today...

The hydrangeas were used in our "follow the yellow brick road" wizard of oz themed get together. All in all no one really noticed the the bottom because our friend Nadja made the best cupcakes ever! Good food is always a great distraction right?

Working with fondant

Fondant, I know can seem intimidating but it really isn’t all that bad. If you have played with play dough then you can play with fondant.

I have a few fondant cakes under my belt, not enough by any stretch of the imagination to be a pro at any means. But I have learned a few tricks and tips along the way.

I have made my own fondant which is just marshmallow, Crisco and powdered sugar. I have also used the boxed “Wilton” kind as well. I definitely prefer just buying the box, takes a few steps out of the way.

Tips

1. Use food gel not food coloring. You can find this at any craft store. My gels of choice are of course the Wilton brand.

2. Food gloves are a must! While making this black cake, I had to use a good amount of black gel and it dyed my hands red(and my table). later saw a mom at a craft store with the same red hands and she was making her son a Mickey Mouse cake. So unless you don’t mind greeting your party guest with red hands, wear gloves.

3. To avoid the stickiness of fondant add powdered sugar as you go along.

4. Making a black cake is labor intensive, grey is the color you will be seeing for a while, not because you regret all the work you got yourself into and can’t turn back now but it takes a lot of gel to get it black.

5. Once you get it black and add all your decorations I like to go over it with a mister or hand paint it with some water it gives it that nice shine.

6. Get the kids involved, they love using their play dough cookie cutters (and there are some really cool ones out there). It also gives them some practicality to play and I love seeing their little eyes come alive when they see play +imagination =yummy cake! Everybody wins!

here is how you make it.

take coconut cookies -- NOT the soft macaroon ones.
the crunchy ones.
place in a large ziplock bag.
crush them.
{my kids like this part - and yes they are in thier pj's but i have a reason!!!
you need to make this early in the day so it will set up by the time of the event}

take softened sherbert {i use raspberry. use whatever you like}

scoop about 1/2 of the carton into a large bowl

add 2/3 of the crushed cookies and 1 cup of coconut

mix

add an equal part of cool whip
{not very exact i know my mom does not really work with recipes!}

spread into 9x13

add remaining cookies over the top
place in freezer for at least 2 hours

remove about 15 min before serving
cut squares and serve.

What to get dad for V-Day? Gifts for dad are always quite the conundrum for me. Until the kids are older, the ideas are all on me. I thought that a classy picture from the kids would do nicely. I had the children help with the pictures (obvious) and then they also helped make the picture frame that it goes in (slight nightmare). None the less it was adorable and fun.

I had two make two V-day cards, I thought this was too funny. I didn't see that she was picking her nose! Dads live for that kind of stuff right?

here is how i made these

i used a laminating machine
BUT you could also cover them with contact paper.
{i chose laminating so that we can reuse them each year and not worry about wear&tear}

cut out each laminated square

GENTLY MIX
2 parts paint
and 1 part dish soap

paint mixture over the words

allow to dry... i left them overnight. it takes longer than standard paint.
if you scratch it too early it is super gooey.

i chose to hang ours on a garland

i am so excited to show you all this amazing baby shower!

we recieved this submission by one our blog followers lia who helped to

style and decorate this shower for her friend foula!

with approximately 100 people in attendance at the hotel monoco on charles street in baltimore

guests were greeted by a beautiful and overflowing candy bar, lollipop cake by yiayia's bakery,

candy topiary centerpieces, and multiple favors by myitalianwedding.com.

the details and colors make this my favorite guest feature we have ever had on our site!

it is obvious that foula is so loved by her family and friends who put this together for her!

these centerpieces were made by hand using ikea vases, 10 in styrofoam balls,

tissue paper, ribbon, and dowels.

they hot glued the candy on to make this a beautiful bright accent for the party!

the strollers and numbers were made using a cricut machine.

we were so amazed by the attention to detail and

the beautiful colors in this baby shower...don't you just want a piece of candy now!?!

thank you so much lia & foula & family for sharing this special occasion with us!

Foula & family welcomed sweet baby girl Fotini Mastrovasilis October 29, 2011 at 1:26 am.

She weigh 6 pounds and measured 19.3 inches long

Valentines party favors...for the mama

i wish i could take credit for this awsome idea of gumball neckalces,

but no it was not my brain child but that of one charming party.

i did however find a quicker and i think safer way to make these little jewles.

first is where on earth do you get gumballs of this size and color?

after searching countless web sites i found them at TJ Maxx of course.

Tia pan trading company also has some really great ones.

1.instead of using a skewer like they suggest on "ocp" i used my husbands drill (cleaned of course) and a small drill bit.

2.then pushed the ribbon through the hole with a little toothpick.

3. tied a knot on each end and kept on going.

a little side note: the kids will drool all over your necklace. not because its fashionable and they want to be like you. because its yummy food around your neck and they will sample it...leading to the colors possible bleeding on to your clothes. the pink gumballs didn't do it but the red ones made the mommies look like they had a sun burn! it was all in good fun and they were a huge hit!

a question my little monkey asks me every morning.

i decided to do an advent style countdown for her since she still is so young and has no understanding of time.

we started our "you've got mail" project by decorating the ever so famous dollar stop mail box from target.

then i told her every day she will get a little prize in her mail box. which of course leaded to her checking her mailbox a zillion times a day. hence the "you've got mail" sign.

these are a few of the gems i have in store for her.

i love the plastic swizzle straws thanks Arleen!

the little heart shaped boxes fit perfectly in the mail box and will be a nice little case for m&m's, conversation hearts, and cute ring. as for the cookies...there for me!!! ha ha ha

{BLOGGERVILLE} no picnik? a review of options

i am here to present my plan from a blogger perspective

many bloggers use picnik as a simple way to make photo collages, watermark / title our images,

resize photos, add artsy flare, and in some cases EDIT photos lol

if you rely on picnik, here are some almost equal replacements.

NOTE:

obviously, you can invest in photoshop, photoshop elements, lightroom ect.

BUT i am looking today for a DIRECT replacements for picnik.

the relevance of this post will obviously depend on your current and future needs/skill level

OPTION 1

FOTOFLEXER

REVIEW SUMMARY:
a good direct picnik replacement {not great, but good}

THE GOOD:

- similar interface & look to picnik - makes you feel comfortable
- easy to navigate

- gives you a Layers option! i like this.
{the layer feature was rated as one of the top features as far as online programs go}

- great basic editing tools

- most of the same "artsy" effects

- i LOVE the irregular crop option!
- links up to social media for sharing or grabbing pictures

THE BAD:

- overall WAY less options

- loading time seemed much longer!

- a little disapointed in the font and collage options in particular

- collage pics need to be loaded individually

- very few stickers

- VERY limited touch up options

notes:

i did not open an account here. it is possible that there are more options if you have an account or pay for a "premium" membership like picnik. need to investigate this a little more.

also, i could only open then save one photo at a time. again, this could change will a membership.

PIXLR
{EXPRESS}

REVIEW SUMMARY:
a fun photo editing replacement, not good for replacing other picnik tools

THE GOOD:
- photoediting / retouch options are okay - some of my fav tools are there
- easy to navigate and use
- uploads easy
- plenty of artsy effects
- quick and easy one photo at a time kind of editing
-pic upload from computer or website
- LOTs of color filter options, which is fun

THE BAD:
- DOES NOT HAVE TEXT!
- DOES NOT HAVE COLLAGES!
- its a new program. they are working out the bugs still.
- NO sharing options. must be downloaded to a computer.
- NOT connected to any social media sites

notes:
MOST of the things that i don't like about this program can be found in the
pixlr's REGULAR program.
the regular pixlr is a GREAT program if you are planning on using a photoshop program eventually.
it has the text and collage, and all of that. BUT there is a learning curve.
the interface is similar to photoshop
& would be a great program to find out if you plan to take that leap eventually
BUT the EXPRESS as a direct replacement of picnik - i do not recommend it.

OPTION THREE
GOOGLE +
CREATIVE KIT

REVIEW SUMMARY:
the most like picnik, except it is only 1/2 of picnik!
but maybe its the 1/2 that you used?!

THE GOOD
- super easy interface once you FIND the creative kit
- is basicaly IS picnik {well half of picnik}
- very easy to navigate
- ALL the same basic edits
- MOST of the artsy effects are there
- ALL OF THE FONTS ARE THERE!!!
- it has some of the fun stickers which they renamed "decorate"

THE BAD
- you have to join google+ to use it. not a big deal, its similar to fb
- google + is a type of social media site - therfore anything you edit using this
program is viewed by others in your circle who you are "friends"with
- you can only edit pics that you upload to the website first,
or ones that are already in a blogger/picassa alblum
- it is about 1/2 or 1/4 of the tools that were originaly on picnik
- NO COLLAGE OPTION!

notes:
not sure how i feel about google+
it feels kinda like a wanna-be facebook.
google got rid of picnik to drive traffic to google+ & that bothers me
BUT i love thier text options. im sure i could find them somewhere else,
but i like what i am comfortable with!

OVERALL
my decision for a direct replacement of picnik,
for MY purposes will be FotoFlexer.
maybe you will pick something different,
or use a combo of them,
but i hope this helped you!

i'd follow you ANYWHERE

both crystal and i have hubbies in the military.

its no secret that we will move quite a bit.

i wanted to find a way to remember all the places my husband and i have lived over the years

so i came up with this valentines gift for him.

at the risk of unveiling part of his present early,

{minimal risk considering how often he checks out my blog lol}

here is the tutorial of how i made it.

i was inspired by lots of gifts that use MAPS.

here is a ROUND UP all my FAVORITES

lets get started.

start with any old map, modpoge {or any type of glue really},

scissors, straight edge, pink and red cardstock, canvas wrap,

& a printed list of all the places you have lived... or at least the ones that you are willing to admit ;)

cut the map to the size of the canvas wrap adding 2 inches to each side

lay the canvas face down on the back of the map

fold up the sides of the map and secure to the back of the canvas.

secure all the sides with glue

it does not have to be pretty - as i like to say...

buisiness in the front, messy in the back.

part one DONE.

now on to the embelishments.

i used my straight edge to make the alternating pink & red strips

and i kinda cheated on the hearts {i used my cricut} but you can always do it the old fasioned way!

i cut the ends to add a little flair

& layered paper to create the "i'd follow you anywere part"

then i glued them all in place.

leave a few inches off to the left to wrap around the canvas.

wrap the remainder of the strips around to the back and secure with glue

all done :)

i have been planning and thinking about this for a LONG time!

aubrey is obsessed with magnetic dolls and dressing them up.

she is also obsessed with playing dress up herself.

this is a combination of the two.

its EASY, CHEAP, and AWESOME!

here is how you make it.

the details:

a tin box - this is a tin pencil case i got in the back to school section

{see i told you i have been planning this one a while...}

printable magnetic sheets - i got these at walmart - $5 for 3 sheets

{i actually used 2 sets... but i made some mistakes or i would not have used them all}

krylon matte protective finish {you can use whatever finish you want - not just matte}

you can use something different but it cannot be water based

{aka - NO modpoge, elmers, ect.}

these go right into your inkjet printer.

they make different ones for laser printers so be sure to check what you have.

i took a picture of aubrey in a white shirt against a white background

and printed it right on to the magnetic sheet.

i cut it to fit on the inside of the tin box

then...using word i designed a magnetic cover

and trimed it to fit the top of the tin box

{i was not so into the whole hello kitty front...although aubrey was lol}

now on to the fun part...

using

ALL FREE PHOTOBOOTH PROPS

{see our ROUND UP of free ones HERE}

{or use some of OUR free ones HERE}

i downloaded the printables from the sites and

printed them 6 to a page on the magnetic sheets

since you printed these on an inkjet printer

any water will ruin and run the prints.

sealing them with a NONwater based sealer will

protect them & keep them from turning yellow

this is an important step if you want these to last.

TIP: cut the pages into 6 squares so that each image is seprate

this will help the paper from separating from the magnet and bubbling.

{this was something i learned the hard way!}

once they dry,

cut out the images and there you go!

i can totally see these as party favors!

aubs is in heaven. this kept her busy for hours.

its packed in the church bag now too -

its an awesome quiet activity!

candied pecans

it is super easy and a great gift idea
BUT beware - they are addicting!

1 lb of pecans {halved - not pieces}

1 cup sugar

1 tsp salt

1 tsp cinnamon

1 egg white

large bowl and large ziploc bag

separate egg white into bowl

beat until stiff

add to pecans

mix to coat evenly

in large ziploc combine sugar, salt, cinnamon.

add in pecans and
shake until all are coated

lay in one even layer on nonstick cooking sheet {silpat}

cook at 250 for 1 hour

i package these up cute

and give them to all my friends

each holiday season.

i'm mindy from creative juice.

i was actually born in texas so i sort of feel at home here!

& i'm pretty sure i remember right that

texas girls know how to party!

at creative juice that is what we do.

party crafts, decorations, favors,
printables, recipes, and more.

here are some of our recent parties

today i will be sharing a tutorial on

candy covered oreos

and

a free christmas printable

these are one of my favorite treats for any party.

you can make them ahead of time to match any theme/color

for this tutorial i was making them for our

snow fairy birthday party

you need

oreos, candy melts/chocolate chips, colored sugar,

and a candy mold [these are super cheap at any craft store]

{the sticks are optional for a stand up display}

melt candy

i used a wilton bag, but you can use a ziploc

head in microwave for 30 sec intervals at 50% power

knead bag inbetween intervals until melted

place thin layer of colored sugar in mold

{i only wanted the snowflake design}

and then a small amount of candy melt over sugar

let this sit for about 30 sec

add a little more candy melt

place oreo in mold and

GENTLY press down so that coating is just over the top

spread excess to cover back of cookie

set in fridge for about 5 min or until candy is firm and cool

flip to counter and gently press to release
