Dixie Virginia Carter (May 25, 1939 – April 10, 2010) was an American film, television and stage actress, best-known for her role in the sitcom Designing Women (1986–1993). She was nominated for the Emmy Award for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series for Desperate Housewives in 2007.

Carter died on April 10, 2010. Her death in Houston, Texas[10] was announced by her husband, actor Hal Holbrook, who stated the cause as complications from endometrial cancer which was diagnosed earlier in 2010. In addition to Holbrook, she is survived by her daughters, Ginna Carter (of Los Angeles) and Mary Dixie Carter (of Brooklyn); a sister, Melba Helen Heath (of San Anselmo, California) and several nephews and nieces. The Dixie Carter Performing Arts and Academic Enrichment Center (informally called "The Dixie") in Huntingdon, Tennessee is named in honor of Carter. In addition to family, her funeral, held April 15, 2010, was attended by Designing Women co-stars Delta Burke, Annie Potts and Jean Smart. Carter's body is buried in her hometown, McLemoresville, Tennessee.

Lech Aleksander Kaczyński;( 18 June 1949 – 10 April 2010) was the President of Poland from 2005 to 2010, a politician of the party Prawo i Sprawiedliwość (Law and Justice, PiS). Kaczyński served as Mayor of Warsaw from 2002 until 22 December 2005, the day before his presidential inauguration. He was the identical twin brother of the former Prime Minister of Poland and current Chairman of the Law and Justice party, Jarosław Kaczyński.

On 10 April 2010, he and his wife Maria Kaczyńska died when a Polish Air Force Tupolev Tu-154M crashed while attempting to land at Smolensk-North airport in Russia. There were no survivors on the plane, which was carrying senior Polish government officials on a trip to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre.

Grand National

The Grand National is a world famous National Hunt horse race which is held at Aintree in the United Kingdom. It is a handicap chase run over a distance of about 4 miles and 856 yards (approximately 7¼ km), and during its running there are thirty fences to be jumped. It is presently scheduled to take place each year on a Saturday afternoon in early April.

It is the most valuable National Hunt event in Great Britain, and in 2009 it offered a total prize fund of £900,000. The race is popular amongst many people who do not normally watch or bet on horse racing at other times of the year. It is also one of the most controversial, due to the injuries and fatalities suffered by participating horses. This makes it a target for animal rights groups, which have campaigned to have it banned. In one hundred and sixty-two runnings of the race there have been eighty officially recorded equine fatalities, four of which came in one year, 1954.

The race is run over two circuits of Aintree's National Course, which is triangular in shape and on which there are sixteen fences. All, except The Chair and the Water-Jump, are jumped twice. Some fences are notorious for their severity, particularly Becher's Brook and The Chair, although in recent years this severity has been much reduced due to pressure from various animal rights groups. The Grand National is the centrepiece of a three-day meeting, one of only four run at Aintree in the racing season.

It is one of ten events reserved for live broadcast on UK terrestrial television under the ITC Code on Sports and Other Listed Events. It is estimated that the Grand National is watched worldwide by over 600 million viewers.

The most recent running of the race took place on April 10 2010, and was won by Tony McCoy and Don't Push It for trainer Jonjo O'Neill and owner J P McManus.

Adult film star actress Joslyn James, a.k.a Veronica Siwik-Daniels, according to sports site Deadspin, Fox News and the Huffington Post, is the latest woman to allege an affair with Tiger.

She would talk about "all the freaky sh!t Tiger dug in bed," according to a "co-worker."

James, whose real name is Veronica Siwik-Daniels, and who specializes in kinky sex, was Woods' "full-time" mistress, several sources have reported.

Siwik-Daniels / Joslyn James has provided "years of faithful service to [Woods'] virulent sexual appetite," according to one woman who knows her.

Umaga, AKA, Eki "Eddie" Fatu (March 28, 1973 – December 4, 2009) was a Samoan-American professional wrestler better known by his ring name Umaga. He was best known for his time with World Wrestling Entertainment, where he was a two-time Intercontinental Champion.

He was a member of the Anoa'i wrestling family and frequently worked as a part of a tag team – variously named The Island Boyz, the Samoan Gangstas, and 3-Minute Warning – with his cousin Matt Anoa'i. During Fatu's first stint with WWE, he was known as Jamal and Matt was billed as Rosey. In late 2005, Fatu returned to WWE. Repackaged under the ring name "Umaga", Fatu went undefeated for many months on WWE's Raw brand throughout much of 2006, before suffering his first defeat under the Umaga name in January of 2007. Known by his many nicknames, including "The Samoan Bulldozer" and "The Samoan Savage", Fatu died on December 4, 2009, as a result of a heart attack.

The Murder of Meredith Kercher - Amanda Knox, Raffaele Sollecito, Patrick Lumumba and Rudy Guédé

The murder of Meredith Kercher took place in Perugia, Italy, on 1 November 2007. Police discovered the body of the 21-year-old British student, who was part of a university exchange programme, on 2 November 2007, at the house that she shared with other students. Kercher was found lying partially clothed under a duvet in her locked bedroom, her windpipe crushed and her throat partially slashed.

The event initially appeared to be a routine one-man rape-murder (with the man admitting he saw her die). However, it became highly notable in world media when it was prosecuted as a sexual torture killing.

On 6 November 2007, police arrested 3 of 4 suspects: Patrick Diya Lumumba, accused of involvement by Amanda Knox, Congolese owner of a local bar; Amanda Knox, an American student; and Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian student (and 2-week boyfriend of Knox). Lumumba was later released and exonerated.

An arrest warrant was issued against Rudy Hermann Guédé, an Ivorian long-term resident of Perugia, based on DNA and fingerprint evidence found on the victim's body. On 20 November 2007 he was arrested in Germany, and on 6 December extradited to Italy. The three suspects were held in custody in Perugia and were charged with murder, sexual assault and theft.

Guédé, who had elected for a fast-track trial, admitted in November 2007 to being with Kercher when she died, claiming that an intruder stabbed her, but was convicted on 28 October 2008 of conspiracy to murder Kercher and sentenced to thirty years in prison. The trial of the two remaining suspects, Amanda Knox and her former boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, began on 16 January 2009. On 4 December 2009, both were found guilty of murder, sexual violence, and other charges. Amanda Knox, 22, was sentenced to 26 years in prison, while Raffaele Sollecito, 25, received 25 years.

Prosecutors had sought life terms for Knox and Sollecito, but, after 14 hours of deliberation, a jury handed them lesser sentences because they were young and had no criminal records. The case received heavy media interest in Italy, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Tiger Woods Scandal

The Woods residence in the exclusive golfing community of Isleworth, Windermere has been in the eye of the media storm since the 14-time major winner crashed his car nearby on November 27.

Woods would not give a statement to police about the crash and failed to dampen subsequent media speculation that it was caused by an argument with Elin over a reported affair with New York night club hostess Rachel Uchitel.

He apologized last Wednesday for "personal sins" and "transgressions" in his family life as a magazine posted what it said was evidence of a 31-month affair between him and a second woman, a cocktail waitress named Jaimee Grubbs.

As news surfaced about her husband's alleged affairs, Elin Nordgren moved out of the family home and was believed to be living now at a friend's home nearby, according to media reports. She was able to rush to her mother's side, however, after she fell.

Woods has yet to be seen in public 11 days after the crash, having pulled out of his own charity golf tournament in California.

Uchitel was first linked to Woods in a report in the National Enquirer tabloid two days before he drove his car into a fire hydrant and then a tree, sustaining facial injuries that were also treated at Health Central. Uchitel denied the affair but as a steady stream of new alleged mistresses emerged, media reports accused her of seeking a massive payout from Woods to prevent her from publishing a horde of damaging emails and messages.

After the crash, celebrity gossip websites speculated that Elin chased Woods with a golf club and smashed the rear windows of his vehicle, causing him to lose control. Woods has denied those reports.

In a sign of the potential financial fallout for the first billionaire sportsman -- who gets an estimated 90 percent of his income from endorsements -- it was reported that Woods had lost his contract with Gatorade in the wake of the scandal. The sports drink maker told AFP the decision to end the two-year-old contract had been taken several months ago, but that could not be confirmed.

Tiger's biggest sponsor Nike last week issued a statement saying it was standing by the sports star, but the number of his alleged mistresses has since soared into the double digits.

Woods also faces new questions about the crash after the Orlando Sentinel reported that a failed police request for a subpoena to obtain hospital blood test results cited a witness who claimed the golfer had been drinking and was taking Ambien, a sedative, and the pain-killer Vicodin.

Police slapped Woods with a careless driving citation and a 164-dollar fine, but ended their investigation into the crash saying they did not believe alcohol was involved.

Online fascination with Woods' apparent infidelities meanwhile has been a boon for Yahoo!, the firm's blunt-talking chief executive Carol Bartz said. "God bless Tiger," Bartz said while discussing Yahoo! user traffic and display advertising at UBS Investment Bank's annual Global Media and Communications Conference in New York City.

"This week we got a huge uplift: front page, news, sports, gossip. He just filtered through the whole place," she said, referring to the company's various web pages. It is better than Michael Jackson dying; it is kind of hard to put an ad next to a funeral."

Leila Lopes (19 November 1969 - 3 December 2009) was an actress, journalist and presenter of Brazilian television, known for her appearance in soap operas on the Rede Globo channel, and later for entering the pornographic cinema. She was found dead at her apartment and it is suspected that she committed suicide.

Born Leila Gomes Lopes in São Leopoldo, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, she was the daughter of Reúcio Lopes, a teacher from Esteio, and Natália Gomes Lopes. She lived in Esteio with her parents until she became famous in 1990 when she became a journalist for the television channel Rede Globo. She appeared twice in Playboy magazine, the first time in March 1997 and also in May of 2008 after producing the pornographic film Brasileirinhas. Her last work had been as a presenter of the television program, Entre 4 Paredes com Leila Lopes. She also appeared on JustTV, Calcinha Justa, and Sexprivé.

Leila Lopes died on Dec. 3, 2009. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack brought on by an overdose and suicide has not been ruled out. Officials state that antidepressants were found next to her body. She was 40 years old.

greater number of goals scored in all group matches between the teams concerned;
drawing of lots by the FIFA Organising Committee or play-off depending on time schedule.

Also referred to as simply Modern Warfare 2 or Call of Duty 6 is a first-person shooter video game developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360. Officially announced on February 11, 2009, the game was released worldwide on November 10, 2009. It is the sixth installment of the Call of Duty series and the direct sequel to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, continuing along the same storyline. It was released in conjunction with two other Call of Duty games: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Mobilized for the Nintendo DS, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare: Reflex, a port of Call of Duty 4 adapted by Treyarch for the Wii console. In addition, a comic book series based on one of the game’s characters will also be produced, entitled Modern Warfare 2: Ghost.

The game takes place five years after the previous installment. Gameplay is divided between the multinational counter-terrorist group Task Force 141, who are trying to eliminate Vladimir Makarov, and the US Army Rangers, who are defending against the Russian invasion of the United States. Several settings for the game include Afghanistan, Rio de Janeiro, Siberia, and Washington D.C.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 received highly positive reviews from various gaming websites and has received high praise for its in-depth multiplayer. Upon its release, Modern Warfare 2 sold approximately 4.7 million copies worldwide in 24 hours.

Similar to previous installments within the Call of Duty series, the player assumes the role of various characters during the single-player campaign, changing perspectives throughout the progression of the story.

Each mission features a series of objectives that are displayed on the HUD, which marks their direction and distance. Tasks vary in their requirements, having the player arrive at a particular checkpoint, eliminate enemies in a specified location, stand their ground to defend an objective, or plant explosive charges on an enemy installation. The player is accompanied by friendly troops who cannot be issued orders. Laptop computers that contain enemy intelligence appear throughout the campaign and may be collected to unlock several game bonuses.

Mission settings in the game include Afghanistan, Rio de Janeiro, Siberia, and Washington D.C.

Twitter is a privately funded startup, with offices in the SoMA neighborhood of San Francisco, CA. Started as a side project in March of 2006, Twitter has grown into a real-time short messaging service that works over multiple networks and devices.

Where did the idea for Twitter come from?

Jack Dorsey had grown interested in the simple idea of being able to know what his friends were doing. Specifically, Jack wondered if there might be an opportunity to build something compelling around this simple status concept. When he brought the idea up to his colleagues, it was decided that a prototype should be built.

Twitter was funded initially by Obvious, a creative environment in San Francisco, CA. The first prototype was built in two weeks in March 2006 and launched publicly in August of 2006. The service grew popular very quickly and it soon made sense for Twitter to move outside of Obvious. In May 2007, Twitter Incorporated was founded.

Why do so many people seem to like Twitter?

Simplicity has played an important role in Twitter’s success. People are eager to connect with other people and Twitter makes that simple. Twitter asks one question, “What are you doing?” Answers must be under 140 characters in length and can be sent via mobile texting, instant message, or the web.

Twitter’s core technology is a device agnostic message routing system with rudimentary social networking features. By accepting messages from sms, web, mobile web, instant message, or from third party API projects, Twitter makes it easy for folks to stay connected.

What’s next for Twitter?

Twitter continue to follow user behavior and pay close attention to feature requests. They have launched their mobile site, m.twitter.com after getting lots of requests for this feature. However, they are also very much guided by their philosophy of keeping things simple and intuitive so they like to restrain themselves with regard to features. That being said, people seem to be calling for more interesting ways to share feedback with one another and organize themselves and their updates into groups–they’re paying attention to these requests.

Facebook is a social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. The website’s name stems from the colloquial name of books given at the start of the academic year by university administrations with the intention of helping students get to know each other better.

Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook with his roommates and fellow computer science students Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes while he was a student at Harvard University. The website’s membership was initially limited to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It later expanded further to include any university student, then high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over. The website currently has more than 250 million active users worldwide.

A January 2009 Compete.com study has ranked Facebook as the most used social network by worldwide monthly active users, followed by MySpace.

Sony Playstation 3 - PS3 Slim

Sony on Tuesday finally took the wraps off the much-rumored PS3 Slim and gave it the more affordable $299 price tag consumers have been clamoring for.

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai performed the unveiling at a press conference in Cologne, Germany, preceding the opening of the Gamescom Expo. He took the stage and announced the PS3 was “getting a new model” and that, indeed, it was called the PS3 Slim.

The Slim is hitting stores September 1 in North America and Europe and will cost $299 (or for those who live in regions, 299 euros or 29,980 yen). Hirai says the device has the same features and functions as the “old” PS3 but is 33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, and comes with a 120GB hard drive.

Sony says that to achieve the new form factor, the internal design architecture of the new PS3 system has been completely redesigned–”from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism.”

The PS3 Slim is powered by a new 45nm version of the Cell processor, which runs at the same speed as the 60nm processor in the “old” PS3 but is smaller and more energy efficient. According to company reps, power consumption for the Slim has also been cut to two-thirds, “helping to reduce fan noise,” which is important.

On the cosmetic front, this model has a textured surface finish that gives the PS3 a fresh, casual look that the company hopes will make it more appealing to a wider audience (read: casual gamers). As previously rumored, the PS3 logo has undergone a redesign and Sony’s changing the PS3 brand name from “PLAYSTATION 3″ to “PlayStation 3″ (we’ve actually been calling it the PlayStation 3 for a while).

Like the 80GB and 160GB models, the 120GB PS3 Slim has built-in Wi-Fi and two USB ports (sorry, Sony didn’t add IR or backwards compatibility for PS2 games). You can also upgrade/replace the hard drive without voiding the warranty, though Sony has moved the hard drive from the side of the unit to the front for “easier access.” (To remove the hard drive, you simply unscrew two screws). The one feature missing from the Slim is the ability to install another operating system (i.e., Linux)–Sony is doing away with that feature.

With earlier PS3s, you could prop your unit up vertically or lay it down horizontally. Out of the box, the Slim is only designed to be used in a horizontal position, but Sony will sell a $24 stand that allows you to stand it up vertically.

In making the move to the PS3 Slim, Sony will be upgrading the firmware to 3.00 and phasing out its legacy 80GB and 160GB models, selling them for $299 and $399 respectively.

John Koller, director of hardware marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America, says they’ve been able to run down inventory of older models, but he didn’t have the best answer as to why someone would buy an old 80GB model over the new 120GB Slim. “Some people want a unit right away and they may like the look of the old unit,” he said. “People will have their reasons for wanting one.”

How do you solve the problem when “Hidden Files” do not appear when the PC is infected by a virus?

This problem is caused by viruses which lack stealth, so they use windows loopholes(flaws) to protect themselves, they disable the option to “Show all files” and make the virus files “System files”, thus they become invisible and indestructible, if we manage to make them visible and destructible we can easily delete them. A common symptom you will see when you are infected is that when you double click on the drive, it opens in a new window rather than in the same parent window. Now we are going to see the steps to delete these files without the help of any anti-virus.

Steps:

Identify the files : Goto start menu and type “msconfig” in run and enter, then click on startup. There you will see an entry to run an executable file(.exe) in the root folder c:\ or in the c:\windows\system32 folder, the common files are amvo.exe, ckvo.exe, aaa.exe, avsp.exe. Uncheck all of these enteries, and click on “ok”, then it will ask you to restart the PC. Do it!!!
Time to make it Visible and delete it : We will use a DOS command called “attrib” which is used to change file attributes, with additional parameters -s to remove system attribute this will allow as to delete the file and -h this will unhide the file. First goto start menu and type “cmd” in RUN and enter, a black box will open up,
- type cd\ and enter,
- type “attrib -s -h autorun.inf” and enter,
- type “attrib -s -h amvo.exe” and enter, where amvo.exe is the file identified as the virus file in step 1,
- type “del amvo.exe” and enter,
- type “del autorun.inf” and enter,
- type “cd windows\system32″
- type “attrib -s -h amvo.exe” and enter, where amvo.exe is the file identified as the virus file in step 1,
- type “del amvo.exe” and enter,
Delete all possible traces of the virus files:.

Open “My Computer”, right click on C Drive and click on properties and then on disk cleanup, goto the more options tab and clean system restore files, as you know that windows, backs up its system files, so a copy of the virus may also be backed up.
Delete all files in Internet Explorer, and Temp folder in Windows.

Restart your PC and you are clean again. In some cases, the virus damages the windows registry, you can download Registry Mechanic, to fix invalid entries, if your programs are not opening but gives you the “Open with” window then your exe file association is corrupt, download and run exefix_xp tool from here

If nothing works, download and run Smart Virus Remover Tool.

Microsoft, Windows 7 is more than just spin. It’s stable, smooth, and highly polished, introducing new graphical features, a new taskbar that can compete handily with the Mac OS X dock, and device management and security enhancements that make it both easier to use and safer. Importantly, it won’t require the hardware upgrades that Vista demanded, partially because the hardware has caught up, and partially because Microsoft has gone to great lengths to make Windows 7 accessible to as many people as possible.

It’s important to note that the public testing process for Windows 7 involved one limited-availability beta and one release candidate, and constituted what some have called the largest shareware trial period ever. As buggy and irritating as Vista was, Windows 7 isn’t. Instead, it’s the successor to Windows XP that Microsoft wishes Vista had been, and finally places it on competitive footing with other major operating systems like OS X and Linux.

Microsoft is offering six versions of Windows 7: Starter, Home Premium, Professional, Ultimate, OEM, and Enterprise. The three versions that Redmond will be promoting most heavily are Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate, although Starter will also be available to consumers.

Windows 7 will support both 32-bit and 64-bit systems. The bare minimum requirements for the 32-bit include a 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB available hard-disk space, and a DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver. 64-bit systems will require at least a 1 GHz processor, 2GB RAM, 20GB of free space on your hard drive, and a DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver. A touch-screen monitor is required to take advantage of the native touch features. Do note that some users have claimed to have limited success running the Windows 7 beta with less than 1GB of RAM, but that’s not recommended.

Installation
Microsoft is offering several paths to install Windows 7. People can buy a new computer with the operating system already installed, upgrade from Windows XP or Vista, or do a clean install on a computer the user already owns. The clean installation took us about 30 minutes, but that will vary depending on your computer.

The upgrade procedure is different depending on whether you’re running Windows XP or Windows Vista. Vista users merely need to back up their data before choosing the Upgrade option from the install disc. Both XP Home and XP Pro users will have to back up their data, then choose Custom from the install disc. Custom will have the same effect as a clean install, although it’ll save your old data in a folder called Windows.old. Once you choose Custom, you’ll need to select the partition of your hard drive that contains Windows XP, and then follow the instructions to enter your product key and allow the computer to reboot as needed.

Features: Taskbar and Aero Peek
Although the look of Windows 7 may seem to be nothing more than some polish applied liberally to the Vista Aero theme, make no mistake: This is a full replacement operating system, and more than just “Vista done right.” From driver support to multitouch groundwork for the future, from better battery management to the most easy-to-use interface Microsoft has ever had, Windows 7 is hardly half-baked.

The first thing that should stand out is the new taskbar. This is one of the best improvements Microsoft has made–third-party program dock makers are going to have to do some serious innovation when Windows 7 goes public. Besides incorporating the translucent style of Aero, the new taskbar is arguably even better than the Mac OS X dock. It features pinned programs using large, easy-to-see icons. Mouse over one and all windows associated with that program appear in preview. Mouse over one of those preview panes to reveal an X to close the window. Hover over the preview to show a full-size preview of the program, or click on the window to bring it to the front. Because of the button size, people with touch screens should find it especially easy to use.

Jump lists are another new taskbar improvement that make recently opened documents easier to get to. Right-click or left-click and drag on any program icon pinned to the taskbar to see a list of files that you’ve recently used in that program. In Internet Explorer, this will show recently visited Web sites, although it doesn’t yet seem to work in Firefox.

If you’ve noticed the missing Show Desktop icon, that’s because it’s been baked into the taskbar itself. Mouse over to the right corner. Hovering over the Show Desktop box reveals the desktop, and then hides it when you mouse away. Click on the box to minimize all your programs.

Why you should Upgrade to Windows Vista SP1

Windows Vista SP1 is now RTM, and will be shortly available for download for all Vista users. SP1 is made of a large number of individual files and components, resulting is a big file (over 1.1 GB in size, if downloaded from MSDN).
In addition to all previously released updates, Windows Vista SP1 contains changes focused on addressing specific reliability and performance issues, supporting new types of hardware, and adding support for several emerging standards. SP1 contains 479 patches. Also, there are also 109 new features included.

Windows Vista SP1 will support the following delivery methods:
Express: Through Windows Update. Requires an internet connection, but minimizes the size of the download by sending only the changes needed for a specific computer. This installation will take about 65 MB for x86-based operating systems.
Stand-alone: As a stand-alone download. Recommended for computers with limited Internet connectivity and for applying the service pack to multiple computers. The download size is (much) larger than the express package, but customers can apply a single package to any Windows Vista version and language combination (within a platform). This installation will take about 450 MB (5 Language package) and about 550 MB (Full 36 language package) for x86-based operating systems.
Slipstream: The slipstream version of Windows Vista SP1 is media that already contains the service pack, which companies can use to deploy the operating system to new computers or to upgrade existing computers. Here is where I have bad news: You CANNOT slipstream SP1 into existing Vista media.
Here’s some quick facts on what Vista Service Pack 1 will bring:
GPMC (Group Policy Management Console) will be uninstalled with Service Pack 1 and GPEdit will default to Local Group Policy editing. Following these changes, SP1 users can download an updated version of GPMC which will include new Group Policy capabilities including adding comments to GPOs or individual settings and searching for specific Group Policy settings.
Reduces the number of UAC (User Account Control) prompts from 4 to 1 when creating or renaming a folder at a protected location.
Windows Vista SP1 includes a new Security Policy (UAC: Allow UAccess), which allows applications to prompt for elevation without using the secure desktop. This allows a remote helper to enter administrative credentials during a Remote Assistance session.
Adds support for exFAT, a new file system supporting larger overall capacity and larger files, which will be used in Flash memory storage and consumer devices.
Overcomes FAT32’s 4 GB file limitation, FAT32’s 32 GB format limit.
Contains additional application compatibility fixes for individual applications.
Improves reliability by preventing data-loss while ejecting NTFS-formatted removable-media.
Improves the success of peer-to-peer connections, such as Windows Meeting Space or Remote Assistance applications, when both PCs are behind symmetric firewalls.
Improves Windows Vista’s built-in file backup solution to include EFS encrypted files in the backup.
Improved SRT (Startup Repair Tool), which is part of the Windows Recovery environment (WinRE), can now fix PCs unbootable due to certain missing OS files.
Improves the performance of browsing network file shares by consuming less bandwidth.
Improves power consumption when the display is not changing by allowing the processor to remain in its sleep state which consumes less energy.
Improves power consumption and battery life by addressing an issue that causes a hard disk to continue spinning when it should spin down, in certain circumstances.
Improves the speed of adding and extracting files to and from a compressed (zipped) folder.
Significantly improves the speed of moving a directory with many files underneath.
Improves performance over Windows Vista’s current performance across the following scenarios:

25% faster when copying files locally on the same disk on the same machine
45% faster when copying files from a remote non-Windows Vista system to a SP1 system
50% faster when copying files from a remote SP1 system to a local SP1 system

Improves the time to read large images by approximately 50%.
Improves IE performance on certain Jscript intensive websites, bringing performance in line with previous IE releases.
Includes improvements to Windows Superfetch that help to further improve resume times, in many environments.
Improves network connection scenarios by updating the logic that auto selects which network interface to use (e.g., should a laptop use wireless or wired networking when both are available).
Removes the delay that sometimes occurs when a user unlocks their PC.
New compression algorithm for the RDP (Remote Desktop Protocol) that helps reduce network bandwidth required to send bitmaps or images via RDP. The compression is transparent to all RDP traffic, and typically reduces the size of the RDP stream by as much as 25-60%, based on preliminary test results.
Improves the security of running RemoteApp programs and desktops by allowing RDP files to be signed.
Improves BitLocker Drive Encryption by offering an additional multi-factor authentication method that combines a key protected by the TPM (Trusted Platform Module) with a Startup Key stored on a USB storage device and a user-generated Personal Identification Number (PIN).
Enhanced the BitLocker encryption support to volumes other than bootable volumes in Windows Vista (for Enterprise and Ultimate SKUs).
Updated drivers are delivered primarily via Windows Update and directly from hardware vendors, not as part of a service pack.
Allows users and administrators to control which volumes the disk defragmenter runs on.
Allows users to rename or delete folders while working offline with redirected folders.
Allows KMS (Key Management Service) to run within a Virtual Machine environment.
Improves OS deployment by enabling 64-bit versions of Windows Vista to be installed from a 32-bit OS.
Reports the amount of system memory installed rather than report the amount of system memory available to the OS. (for example: 4 GB x86 systems)
Users are now required to enter a password hint during the initial setup of Windows Vista SP1.
Improved reliability when working with external displays on a laptop.

DISABLE INDEXING SERVICES

Indexing Services is a small little program that uses large amounts of RAM and can often make a computer endlessly loud and noisy. This system process indexes and updates lists of all the files that are on your computer. It does this so that when you do a search for something on your computer, it will search faster by scanning the index lists. If you don’t search your computer often, or even if you do search often, this system service is completely unnecessary. To disable do the following:

1. Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs
5. Click the Add/Remove Window Components
6. Uncheck the Indexing services
7. Click Next

OPTIMISE DISPLAY SETTINGS

Windows XP can look sexy but displaying all the visual items can waste system resources. To optimise:

1.Go to Start
2. Click Settings
3. Click Control Panel
4. Click System
5. Click Advanced tab
6. In the Performance tab click Settings
7. Leave only the following ticked:
- Show shadows under menus
- Show shadows under mouse pointer
- Show translucent selection rectangle
- Use drop shadows for icons labels on the desktop
- Use visual styles on windows and buttons

DISABLE PERFORMANCE COUNTERS

Windows XP has a performance monitor utility which monitors several areas of your PC’s performance. These utilities take up system resources so disabling is a good idea.

To disable:

1. download and install the Extensible Performance Counter List
2.Then select each counter in turn in the ‘Extensible performance counters’ window and clear the ‘performance counters enabled’ checkbox at the bottom.button below.

SPEEDUP FOLDER BROWSING

You may have noticed that everytime you open my computer to browse folders that there is a slight delay. This is because Windows XP automatically searches for network files and printers everytime you open Windows Explorer. To fix this and to increase browsing significantly:

1. Open My Computer
2. Click on Tools menu
3. Click on Folder Options
4. Click on the View tab.
5. Uncheck the Automatically search for network folders and printers check box
6. Click Apply
7. Click Ok
8. Reboot your computer

IMPROVE MEMORY USAGE

Cacheman Improves the performance of your computer by optimizing the disk cache, memory and a number of other settings.

Once Installed:

1.Go to Show Wizard and select All
2.Run all the wizards by selecting Next or Finished until you are back to the main menu. Use the defaults unless you know exactly what you are doing.
3.Exit and Save Cacheman
4.Restart Windows

OPTIMISE YOUR INTERNET CONNECTION

There are lots of ways to do this but by far the easiest is to run TCP/IP Optimizer.

1. Download and install
2. Click the General Settings tab and select your Connection Speed (Kbps)
3. Click Network Adapter and choose the interface you use to connect to the Internet
4. Check Optimal Settings then Apply
5. Reboot

OPTIMISE YOUR PAGEFILE

If you give your pagefile a fixed size it saves the operating system from needing to resize the page file.

1. Right click on My Computer and select Properties
2. Select the Advanced tab
3. Under Performance choose the Settings button
4. Select the Advanced tab again and under Virtual Memory select Change
5. Highlight the drive containing your page file and make the initial Size of the file the same as the Maximum Size of the file.

Windows XP sizes the page file to about 1.5X the amount of actual physical memory by default. While this is good for systems with smaller amounts of memory (under 512MB) it is unlikely that a typical XP desktop system will ever need 1.5 X 512MB or more of virtual memory. If you have less than 512MB of memory, leave the page file at its default size. If you have 512MB or more, change the ratio to 1:1 page file size to physical memory size.

RUN BOOTVIS - IMPROVE BOOT TIMES

BootVis will significantly improve boot times

1. Download and Run
2. Select Trace
3. Select Next Boot and Driver Trace
4. A Trace Repetitions screen will appear, select Ok and Reboot
5. Upon reboot, BootVis will automatically start, analyze and log your system’s boot process. When it’s done, in the menu go to Trace and select Optimize System
6. Reboot.
7. When your machine has rebooted wait until you see the Optimizing System box appear. Be patient and wait for the process to complete

REMOVE THE DESKTOP PICTURE

Your desktop background consumes a fair amount of memory and can slow the loading time of your system. Removing it will improve performance.

1. Right click on Desktop and select Properties
2. Select the Desktop tab
3. In the Background window select None
4. Click Ok

REMOVE FONTS FOR SPEED

Fonts, especially TrueType fonts, use quite a bit of system resources. For optimal performance, trim your fonts down to just those that you need to use on a daily basis and fonts that applications may require.

1. Open Control Panel
2. Open Fonts folder
3. Move fonts you don’t need to a temporary directory (e.g. C:\FONTBKUP?) just in case you need or want to bring a few of them back. The more fonts you uninstall, the more system resources you will gain.
