Destination Photo Project...

So first update since January...woah...5 months or so. Ouch.
I have been wanting to boost this thing back off, give it some new life, fresh feel etc. So I will be changing things up a bit soon. (At least, sooner than 5 months I am sure.)
So I will start this back up with an explanation: DESTINATION PHOTO PROJECT!

I have always enjoyed the idea of a photo booth. A good way to have fun and get your name and work out into the public eye. @9artphoto has met with great success with his photo booths and I've been inspired by how he meets the public via this fun event! (Great work Mark!)

I've wanted to do a photo booth style event but have it be a bit different, perhaps more spontaneous would be a good way to describe it. So in the course of a few conversations with a few good people the idea of DESTINATION PHOTO PROJECT was conceived. I take a photo booth and place it in pre planned places around town, different back grounds, different themes, finding the location, I feel like all these elements will add up to a great and fun experience that can be had for free and will fit into any ones weekend schedule.

A new twist on "trash the dress"...

So, my crafty/ creative wife tossed the idea around of "trash the dress" after our wedding but she just didn't like the idea that much...

So being the seamstress she is, she decided to avoid trashing her dress and go another route. She wants her wedding dress to live on! However, not as the dress looks now, she will cut it shorter in length and dye it a navy blue. This will allow her to wear the dress in a cocktail style when we go out and about. Amanda realized this allows her to have a "new" dress to wear, plus we won't have trashed a memorable piece of materiel but reclaim it for something new!

Here are a few photos I took of Amanda the other day in her dress. These are the last photos to be taken as the dress is currently, keep your eyes open for the new reclaimed version, coming soon!

Two more interesting facts and I'll let you all just see the photos (unless of course you have already skipped on to them...)

Caleb bought their house about a year ago and has turned it completely around. This work would make Extreme Home Makeover cry! The house sat vacant for a few years after being ravaged by a meth addict and it looked every bit as bad as it sounds. (I've seen the before and after) These industries Reed's have turned this place from a bottom shelf dump to a beautiful, wood stove heated, warm inviting colored, relaxing decor all centered-around the kitchen HOME.

A group currently known as Axios

Axios? I know, I was curios too.
I got a call from my Hello Destroyers buddy, Biaka who was excited about this young group of musicians. He informs me, they've just cut their first EP and are very fun and talented people. So of course he asks me if I am interested in meeting them and doing a photo shoot. I was a little hesitant at first because I like time to brain storm and sketch out some lighting set ups. Then I realized this is perfect practice for creativity on the fly! So an hr later Biaka and I are having lunch at Instant Karma and preparing for this shoot.
Needless to say we all had an excellent time out shooting! The Axios men were so helpful when it came to carting around equipment and standing in the snow. Even Ash (bass man) didn't complain when he was asked to stand in the snow with only sandals!
These guys show promising talent as a group and as individuals. They were a pleasure to work with!

The Cameron's

If you've ever met the Cameron's, Charlie and Leah, you know, as I do of their love for friends and entertaining. This is only second to their love of one another, and their soon to be born Emma.
With their photos we didn't want typical pregnant woman photos. So I set down and sketched out some ideas and thought about Charlie and Lead and what I felt when being around them. Personally, I always feel humbled and attended too, they're always so willing to help no matter what. So worked to capture these aspects of their life. I felt it was only appropriate to have Charlie attending to a pregnant Leah in a way that shows his willingness to comfort her.
They were great to work with, we had such a great day, many outtakes and many many moments filled with roaring laughter!
I hope you enjoy these as much as we enjoyed creating them!

So, one of the most un-nerving shoots I have ever done, aside from my first wedding, happened recently. I found the experience exillerating to say the least and the shots I got were also about as cold and mood as I was that day.
To get out to the sweet spot that day, was like coming to the red sea, and being trapped between my determination and chest deep water. ( at points) We made a trial run and found the least dangerous route, then returned to dry land to collect the equipment.
Bringing a camera, lenses, flashes, stands and umbrellas was a fun adventure, though tedious.
I learned that when in such bright light that the infrared slave couldn't pick up the light of the commander flash. So we did 98% of the shoot with a white umbrella and flash to counteract the bejillion watt sun.
So dropped Caleb in the water told him to act cool like he didn't care, which is pretty natural for him really, and he delivered.
When all was said and done, we were wet and the equipment was dry. Caleb and i had a victory beer and hello destroyers (www.hellodestroyers.com) have a few new photos.

The past 10 or so days, I had the extreme privilege of hanging out with a gentleman named, David Baltzer from the Art group, Limner Society. During this 10 day period 5 artists were working toward an art show at Momentum 8. These brilliant artists spent a grueling 12-15 hrs a day working together on their personal pieces of work. They talked, laughed, got stresses and grouchy, ate together and in the end created some brilliant art work together.

This is the vision of David Baltzer of New York City who was the head Limner here with us in Joplin. If you navigate to the "about" page for Limer you will find this following statements concerning themselves;

In this creative situation, I was not a featured artist nor was I even a guest artists. I was the man who was commissioned to photograph the intense and beautiful process the artists embarked upon to create. I loved my time there and I will take many memories with me from being around these great people. The one that will stand out beyond the others was the thick creative spirit that filled the air in that building on Main st. Joplin. I've never imbibed so deeply for such a long period of time the raging freight train of the will power to create and the open mindedness and wiliness to accept critique.

Rock 'n Roll + Camp = Rock Camp

Ernie Williamson in Joplin, Mo. has taken the two best two things in a kids life, or a kid in general and married them!
They take kids from from their lessons (piano, guitar, bass and drums) and form two different bands. At the end of two weeks the bands showcase their work in a public location and have a blast!
I had the great chance to go and photograph the greatly talented musicians in a rehearsal one day at the music store and we had a blast!
I've no doubt that we will see a few of these young society rebelling rock music playing sneer wearing vagrants in a quality music group soon enough.

About three years ago I had an idea that came upon me when thinking about some over extracted coffee and star tracks.
I was setting in the front room of my old house with my friend Travis Curtice sipping some coffee from my Bialetti percolator. For any of you that use or have ever used a percolator, you know that (or for me at least) over extracting your coffee is pretty easy. When the coffee gets over extracted the oils come out and float on the surface. As I set, talking to travis I noticed that the oils were catching the late noon sun rays coming through my window and where exploding with light. This blew my mind and I knew I could do something really interesting with the oil in the coffee.
A few days before we had many low clouds and high winds. A friend suggested I take some long exposures of the clouds rushing past the moon. So after doing this and being quite happy with the results.
So here is my small story about how the coffee tracks happened.
Lighting the coffee for the 2 second exposure proved to be a little more than difficult. I didn't have an gels at that time and as I look back I realize I might have been able to get more color out of the coffee oil employing a couple. You will see the light ended up burning a couple spots in the liquid, I tried many exposures and angles to avoid this but found it unavoidable. I plan on rehashing this project with the coffee and maybe shooting out doors or perhaps in the evening light. I've also decided that I'll have my friend @JustinNevins make me some great over extracted coffee. I decided since he makes brilliant coffee he can also make bad coffee really well.

Ok, I know, this is the first post in a month or so. I haven't been lazy really, this month has been wildly busy. I have had much fun this month with a few different photo jobs so I'll be sharing them over the next few days.
This is my friend Justin Nevins (@JustinNevins) and I'll here are two different settings with him. One, we are doing a shoot for a @hellodestroyers t-shirt the other Justin is working his brilliant espresso skills.
The Shirt shoot we did was quasi rushed, we both had ideas that we couldn't quite make happen. Though we were both quick on our feet and found a couple locations we really enjoyed and we are quite happy with the out come.
For our espresso tasting we made my kitchen our lab. Justin pulled about 12 shots and most (as far as I'm concerned) were decent. As far as justin was concerned were wretched. In the end we found that the espresso machine had a wrong water screen that messed up the tamp. Also, the tamp he has was horrible, so @inside_thehub gave justin a custom made tamp, thanks! So hopefully next time we have an espresso tasting I'll have more photos and better espresso!

Rain
Not only does the water cause my garden to grow better
As well as filling my rain barrels
I am able to find leaves covered in droplets which are beautiful and delicate.

I was headed out to the car and paused, noticing the leaves all over the ground that were covered in dew like droplets.
The thought ran through my head, "Hey, I should get my macro lens and find that photo..." but I got in my car and continued my errand running. When I returned my room mate noted, "Did you see those leaves out there with the water? They're awesome!" So I was moved, to go and do the work involved to find the photos these leaves had to offer. Here are the "keepers" I have.
Finding an image in the world has been a continual wrestling act for me; Not a fruitless act either. (Physically I know I'd loose any wrestling act..ha) I'm continually pushed forward to wrestle by anything from friends to nature, to people I work with and for. I enjoy this struggle, hope you do to...
