IPI Mourns Former Board member Mallam Isma’ila Isa Funtua; pioneering journalist

The International Press Institute (IPI), a global network of editors, media executives and leading journalists for press freedom, today expressed sadness at the death of Nigerian media executive and former IPI Executive Board member Mallam Ismaila Isa, who passed away on July 20 at the age of 78.

Isma’ila Isa Funtua was born in 1942 in Funtua Katsina, Nigeria. He studied at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Nigeria, University of Manchester, UK and later at the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Nigeria.

In January 1975 he became personnel manager of the 10,500 strong United Nigerian Textiles Ltd. (now Plc). Later, under Nigeria’s civilian government, he was appointed Federal Minister of Water Resources. In 1987 he joined the New Africa Holdings Ltd. (publishers of The Democrat newspaper) as managing director and chairman of the editorial board. He also served as publisher of the paper.
Isa joined IPI as a member in 1992 and served on the IPI Executive Board as a special adviser from 1997 to 1999 and as a full member from 1999 to 2007. He was named an IPI Fellow by the General Assembly in Belgrade in 2008.

“Mr. Isa’s demise is a huge loss to the global IPI community and journalism in Nigeria”, IPI Executive Director Barbara Trionfi said. “His contribution to IPI and press freedom will always be remembered by our network.”

Mr. Isa was a generous contributor to IPI’s Press Freedom Fund and hosted the IPI Executive Board Meeting in Abuja in 1999. In 2018 he headed the Host Committee that organized the first ever IPI World Congress in Nigeria.

Today, FC Barcelona officially presents the new jersey for the 2020/21 season, whose design is inspired by the 1920s, considered the Club’s first Golden Era. Following the Club’s official presentation of the jersey on Tuesday July 14, the kit is going on sale at the Barça Stores of Camp Nou (also online), Canaletes, Passeig de Gràcia and La Roca Village. Delta State Government received Covid-19 Mobile Laboratory for testing of the virus

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Mordi Ononye, received the items on behalf of the State Government at the Asaba Specialist Hospital when he met with a team from Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State.

Kaduna State University begins online lectures for students during the lockdown period

Kaduna State University has commenced online lectures for its students at home during the ‘lockdown’ period.

The Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Muhammad Tanko, who said this in a statement in Kaduna, added that the lectures were in line with the directive of the Federal Ministry of Education.

Tango said that online lectures for postgraduate students had commenced since, adding that it would be extended to undergraduates very soon.

He advised undergraduates to check the school websites for updates and other information.

“Schools have been closed for a while now and our students are idling away at home following the stay-at-home order.

“The e-lectures would, therefore, keep students busy with academic activities while at home, and may enable us to catch up with the academic calendar,” he said.

He commended Gov. Nasir El-Rufa’i and his team for the proactive measures taken to prevent further spread of Covid-19 in the state.

The Vice-Chancellor noted that although some of the measures, such as the lockdown and social distancing were tough, they were in the best interest of the state and the nation.

“We are confident that Kaduna State and Nigeria, in general, will beat the pandemic, following the measures being taken to curtail further spread of the deadly virus currently ravaging the world,” he said.

Breaking news: Osun record six new coronavirus COVID 19 cases

Six new cases of coronavirus among the isolated returnees from Côte d’Ivoire has been confirmed by the Osun State Government summing the total case in the state to 20.

This is as the test on the samples of all the 127 returnees from the West African country was completed on Thursday.

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Rafiu Isamotu, while confirming the report said all the persons at the isolation have been tested and 18 were positive.

He added that with the two initial cases, the state has a total of 20 persons infected with the virus.

According to him, all the cases have been moved to medical facilities in Ejigbo for treatment.

However, it was gathered that some residents were apprehensive in the town as the news of the infected cases filtered in.

Isamotu had told journalists at a press conference on Wednesday that the state has two isolation centers in the state capital and one in Ile-Ife, saying the state is fully ready to keep the handle the cases it has presently.

He added that the isolation centre at the State Specialist Hospital, Asubiaro in Osogbo is a 20-bed facility while there another at Mercyland Hospital.

The mayor of Igualada, Marc Castells, has announced today that Barça have made a commitment to play a benefit match in order to raise money for the ‘Consorci Sociosanitari Igualada (CSSI)’. Therefore, when circumstances permit, Barça will pay a visit to the Les Comes stadium to face CF Igualada to help the CSSI, an organisation formed by the Igualada City Council and the Social and Health Service of Catalonia and which offers social and health services to older people and those who are dependent in order to improve their quality of life and the independence. Helping those who are most vulnerable to COVID-19, the CSSI offers this service in the areas of Igualada and Anoia.

The announcement by Mayor Castells came during his daily press conference on the development of the coronavirus in one of the areas most affected economically and socially. The mayor stated that Barça had accepted the request made by the president of CF Igualada, Francesc Jorba, who was beside him at the press conference. “CF Igualada, together with FC Barcelona, would like to present to you this initiative which we greatly appreciate and I hope that it will provide excitement and make us aware that we are not alone; that there are many people outside of the Conca d’Òdena who love us and who are looking after us,” said Castells. He continued: “In moment like this you always find people who give you support, ideas and a vision and help to being you good news for when all this is over. Everything that is happening has an end point and as my grandfather used to say, when it has rained it has stopped raining.”

Castells explained that the blaugranes accepted the idea straight away in a telephone call on Wednesday evening. “Yesterday I had the chance to talk to the president of FC Barcelona and his first vice president Jordi Cardoner, whose family comes from the area of Igualada and he told me that we could make the annoucement in a council meeting at Igualada together with the mayors form the rest of the area of Conca d’Òdena.”

Francesc Jorba, president of CF Igualada, gave more details of how the initiative came about. “A few days ago the sporting committee at Igualada came up with the idea and they asked me: why don’t we contact Barça to see if they would like to play in a benefit match to help the health services in Igualada and la Conca? We sent an e-mail and we quickly got a positive respones and yesterday president Josep Maria Bartomeu phoned me. Duing the conversation he put the Club at our disposition and he was very worried about the situation in Igualada and la Conca. He said that the game between CF Igualada and FC Barcelona would be possible to raise money for the CSSI. We want to thank them for this ray of light in a moment of darkness and rain. La Conca d’Òdena, closed

La Conca d’Òdena was closed off on 12 March and that affects the municipalities of Igualada, Vilanova del Camí, Santa Margarida de Montbui and Òdena after a strain of the virus and some 20 positives case were detected by the Catalan Department of Health.

Six days later on 18 March there was a sharp rise in positives at Igualada Hospital, more than 200 and in Anoia there were 21 victims. The development of the pandemia has made la Conca d’Òdena ground zero in the current crisis in Catalonia and the area has one of the highest death rates due to coronavirus in Europe.

Up until Wednesday 1 April, 98 people have died due to the outbreak at Igualada Hospital and there some 154 professional heath workers in Anoia who have tested positive for Covid-19.

A local national who had recently stayed in Italy has been confirmed as Ivory Coast first coronavirus case, the government said on Wednesday.

Africa has so far mostly escaped large numbers of cases of the epidemic that has spread across 110 countries since first emerging in China in December.

The Ivorian case is a 45-year-old man whose symptoms were detected on Tuesday and who tested positive for COVID-19 on Wednesday, the country’s health ministry said in a statement.

He was quickly taken care of in an Abidjan hospital and his clinical status is stable, the ministry said.

All people the man had contacted have been identified and authorities were following up, it said.

There are around 20 cases in Sub-Saharan Africa so far in South Africa, Nigeria, DR Congo, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Senegal and Togo, according to the WHO, which is far less than most other regions outside the continent.

The Paris Saint-Germain attacker is expected to get the results of the test tomorrow (Wednesday), L’Equipe reports.

It was earlier reported that PSG were sweating on the fitness of star striker Kylian Mbappe who picked up a throat infection ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 second leg against Borussia Dortmund.

The French World Cup star missed team training Monday and Tuesday and was reported to have a sore throat, with his club needing to overturn a 2-1 deficit from the first leg in Germany three weeks ago.

Mbappe has scored six goals in his past three PSG matches, including a hat-trick in the 5-1 French Cup semi-final win over Lyon last week.

“We’re trying to see if he can train a bit tonight (Tuesday). We have to wait and decide tomorrow morning,” coach Thomas Tuchel told PSG TV.

Spanish international Pablo Sarabia is a possible replacement should Mbappe miss the game.

PSG lost 2-1 to an Erling Haaland-inspired Dortmund before a crowd of 80,000 in Germany last month, but the return leg will be played at an empty Parc des Princes due to the coronavirus outbreak.

We’ve recovered N3.7 billion, various assets from Ex-NDDC

President Muhammadu Buhari says law enforcement agencies have recovered over N3.7billion as well as various assets worth billions of Naira from contractors and former directors of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The President disclosed this at the inauguration of NDDC Advisory Committee, comprising 9 Governors of the Niger Delta Region and the Ministers of Niger Delta Affairs and Environment.

Specifically, President Buhari said: ‘‘To date, the EFCC and other agencies of Government have recovered over N3.7billion in cash as well as various assets worth billions of Naira from some contractors and former Directors of the Commission.

‘‘Furthermore, I am told that Government agencies have placed liens on over N6 billion of assets which are being investigated.’’

The President told the committee that these abuses of the past clearly show the need for strict and diligent oversight, going forward.

He, therefore, charged the newly inaugurated committee to discharge the new assignment diligently and effectively, working closely with the relevant ministries, adding that he looked forward to seeing positive changes in the affairs of the Commission as well as on the ground in the Niger Delta region.

President Buhari recalled that in 2016, his administration launched the “New Vision for the Niger Delta (NEVIND)”, aimed at bringing sustainable peace, security, infrastructure and human capital development to the region.

He said the medium to achieve this noble objective was through the Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs, NDDC and the Presidential Amnesty Programme (PAP).

The President, however, expressed regret that in the past these institutions were unable to deliver their mandates due to mismanagement.

‘‘As a result, the people of the Niger Delta were left with abandoned infrastructural projects and substandard social programmes which were designed to improve their living conditions.

‘‘It is to reverse this trend that I approved, in February 2020, the constitution of a 10-Man Presidential Monitoring Committee (PMC) as provided for in Section 21 of the NDDC Establishment Act.’’

He noted that the PMC, which will be chaired by the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs and its members drawn from various MDAs, will focus on monitoring the operations and activities of the commission, and will be reporting to him.

In the same vein, the President said the inauguration of the NDDC Advisory Committee is in line with the provisions of Section 11 (I) of the NDDC Establishment Act, explaining that the Committee is charged with the responsibility of advising the Board and monitoring its activities.

Justifying the decision to inaugurate the Committee ahead of the reconstitution of the NDDC Board, President Buhari said:

‘‘This is to enable us develop insights into the affairs of the Commission which will properly guide the Board when reconstituted once the Forensic Audit exercise on the Commission is concluded.

‘‘You may recall that the Federal Executive Council, on the 5th of February, 2020 approved the appointment of the Lead Forensic Auditors. I am told they are concluding their pre-engagement activities and should be ready to commence work soon’’.

Speaking on behalf of the members of the Advisory Committee, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State thanked the President for inaugurating the Committee and granting the request of the governors, from the region for a forensic audit of the NDDC.

The Governor expressed hope that the result from the forensic audit would help streamline activities of the NDDC with a view to putting it on course to deliver on its mandate to the people.

Underscoring the roles of the Advisory Committee, the Delta State Governor noted that for sustainable development of the region, the NDDC must perform its duties in close collaboration with the States to avoid duplication of projects.

‘‘We do not want to criticise what has happened in the NDDC for quite some time, but the fact is that the cooperation between the states and the NDDC has not been strengthened overtime and we have various cases of duplication of projects that are not properly planned.

‘‘But I believe that with the inauguration of this body we will be able to sit down, meet together, work in collaboration and supportively to bring greater development to our people,’’ he said.

The Executive Director of frontline property development company, Revolution Plus, Mrs. Tolulope Onalaja, rolled out all the drums to celebrate her entry into the fifth decade of her existence as she clocks 40.

Basking in the euphoria of her landmark age, Mrs. Onalaja, who gave all the credit of the mega party to her husband, could not hide her happiness as she grinned from ear to ear.

Held at the prestigious Landmark Event Centre, Victoria Island, Lagos, the party was a convergence point of some sort for friends, family members, colleagues and well wishers, who trooped out in their numbers to celebrate a woman everyone described as smart, brilliant and hard-working.

Anchored by A-list comedian, Ayo Makun, popularly known as AY and Real Warri Pickin, the event showed class as it kickstarted with a cocktail session, followed by a prayer said by Pastor Victor Akinbu.

The conclusion of the prayers heralded the arrival of the lady of the moment, who made a classy appearance, leaving the wow signal on the lips of the guests.

Dressed in sparkling white mermaid gown with accessories to match, and stylishly and neatly packed hair, the celebrant turned celebrity kept all heads swinging to and fro to catch a glimpse of her.

With infectious smiles playing across her lips, she danced majestically in, with a retinue of friends and well wishers while at the same same time exchanging pleasantries with the guests.

Colleague after colleague, family member after family member, all testified to the good natured and kindhearted fellow Mrs Onalaja is.

In the midst of AY's comic bombs, not a few acknowledged Onalaja's amiable, but take no nonsense nature, adding that she is very friendly, caring and disciplined.

It was fullfilled Tolulope that stepped out with her equally gorgeous husband for the cutting of the classically designed cake to the delight and applause of all present.

With melodious sounds flowing from the stables of Shuga Band and DJ Exclusive in addition to free flow of local and intercontinental dishes.
