Reading is a huge part of a child's development. In the early stages, it should be a shared experience between parent and child that can impart a love for books at an early age. Reading skills are an essential part of building a strong imagination, love for story-telling, and interest in learning.

As a parent myself, I failed to introduce reading books to my kids when they are young. I knew how much reading will improve a child's intellectual capacities. It widens vocabulary and develops early literacy skills such as communication, concentration, and focus.

They Get Bored Easily

Kids of today's generation tend to get bored and feel exhausted easily. Sometimes, they can hardly do things productive. Modern technology dominates their lives. Mobile phones and other handheld gadgets seem to be a constant shadow that should follow them anywhere they go.

They can access the web anytime they want. They can watch favorite music videos, chat with friends and play online games. Everything seem to be open and out with only one click of a button or one swipe on the screen.

Kids can do a lot but can be easily wasted and drained. There should be other activities that will make them busy like sports, outdoor games and exercise.

Parents should know how to deal with this dilemma and manage to control or set limitations in order to avoid conflicts. Being understood is different from just being heard. I told my children that they should be responsible for their actions. I always remind them that these devices may bring negative effects if used excessively.

I know, it's a struggle to establish constant and close connection with our children nowadays but we need to be cautious in guiding them on whatever activities they may get into. Our kids should prioritize their studies over these addictive distractions.

Lizette at her Debut Party, 2013

Yeah! It's been a year now since my daughter had her most memorable birthday... her debut celebration.

She will be turning 19 tomorrow and I am glad she reached this chapter of her life without any health problems, her grades this semester are the highest so far with GPA of 1.64, she's still beautiful and getting more appealing and thank God her status is not yet "IAR" which means, Mama has nothing to worry about boys at this point. Her being a fan girl somehow decreases the possibility of being involved with someone as of the moment.

Her mind is pre-occupied with the incredible cuteness of Luke, Calum, Ashton and Michael.. the four Aussie guys who dominated the music scene with their debut worldwide release of "She Looks So Perfect" in February, 2014 - topping the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the UK. Their self-titled album was released in June 2014. 5SOS (5 Seconds Of Summer) is a boy band that rocks Lizette's world upside-down.

So, don't you wonder why she's single but not available. Actually, she's saving funds to afford their ticket in an upcoming concert in the Philippines. OMG!! I just hope it's not as high as 1D Live in Manila.

Well, enough for 5SOS because I'm having "LSS" (last song syndrome) with their songs that are repeatedly playing in my subconscious. She never gets enough of Amnesia.

One more year and she will no longer be called a teenager but a young adult who's ready to make her own decisions, aspire bigger and bolder dreams, take responsibility for actions done and build a credible yet humble personality.

As she enters adulthood, I wish her to be more mature and independent but also mindful of our guidance and support in whatever endeavor she has to pursue in the future.

Their recent travel destination was in Vietnam. They stayed at Holiday View Hotel Catba Island from August 22-26, 2014. Behold the captivating beauty of Halong (Ha Long) Bay through the lens of The Travel Buddies.

The bay features thousands of limestone karsts and isles in various sizes and shapes. It has a 120 kilometers long coastline and is approximately 1,553 square kilometers in size with 1969 islets. Several of the islands are hollow, with enormous caves, other support floating villages of fishermen, who ply the shallow waters for 200 species of fish and 450 different kinds of mollusks. Another specific feature of Halong Bay is the abundance of lakes inside the limestone islands.

It consists of a dense cluster of some 1,600 limestone monolithic islands each topped with thick jungle vegetation, rising spectacularly from the ocean. Several of the islands are hollow, with enormous caves. Hang Dau Go (Wooden stakes cave) is the largest grotto in the Hạ Long area. French tourists visited in the late 19th century, and named the cave Grotte des Merveilles. Its three large chambers contain large numerous stalactites and stalagmites (as well as 19th century French graffiti). Diagnosed with Cystic Follicle

Every woman should know her reproductive system not only because it is an essential part of existence but for purposes of prevention and treatment of possible diseases that may be encountered in a lifetime.

Being a woman and mother, I'm aware that as I grow older, I will experience a lot of changes, psychological or physical. I passed the stage of adolescence and puberty long time ago. I've already enjoyed the gift of conception and pregnancy. And now, I'm entering a new chapter... my middle age.

A sudden change in my menstrual flow compelled me to see my OB-Gyne. I discussed some details in this post. My latest TVS also showed a Cystic Follicle in my left ovary. Dra. Legaspi told me that there's nothing serious about it. It's just an egg that had not ruptured. Nevertheless, I should undergo TVS after 3 months and see if the cyst gets smaller.

What is Cystic Folllicle or Follicular Cyst?
It resembles a bubble that contains fluid and is surrounded by a thin wall. It is considered a simple cyst or non-cancerous one. Women of all ages may have this kind of functional cyst because it occurs normally and disappears on its own.

"If a follicle fails to rupture and release the egg, the fluid remains and can form a cyst in the ovary. This usually affects one of the ovaries. Small cysts (smaller than one-half inch) may be present in a normal ovary while follicles are being formed."-Source

Follicular cysts are mostly painless and harmless with no serious complications, however if the cyst becomes large and ruptures, a woman may experience the following: - Source

there may be pain, pressure, or bloating in the low abdomen
nausea, vomiting, tenderness in the breasts, or a change in length of the menstrual cycle
can put pressure on the bladder or bowels. This can cause a woman to feel like she needs to use the bathroom.
if accompanied by fever or nausea, seek medical treatment immediately

My Toddler Artist

If you are an avid reader of my blog, you probably knew KIKO and his little milestones from being an adorable baby to a smart little toddler. I was able to document some of his "little big moments" in these following posts:

Kiko's Nursery Report Card

He started to attend school as early as 2 1/2 years old. He's good in written examinations but according to his moderators from pre-nursery and nursery classes, he's quiet and seldom participated actively in discussions. I guess this greatly affected his class standing. He got an average of 88.97 which could have been higher.

Anyways, Kiko is just turning 5 this coming June so there's a long, long way to go for this young kiddo to develop his skills and abilities.

Colors and shapes are amongst his line of interest. He would always get his color pencils or markers to draw anything.

He loves to doodle and scribble like any normal growing kid his age but his art works seem to amaze me because he prefers the unconventional. Plain and simple kinda bore him.

Painting using water color is another hobby of this little master. There's this one place in SM Megamall, Mandaluyong City called Kiddy's Arts Town that he regularly visits where his creativity and artistry are being utilized. His favorite, Rubber Art Color painting where he will choose a drawing pattern and fill it up with different colors. Afterwards, it will be cooked in the oven for 30 seconds and cooled it off with water.

His first few designs were done with some assistance but the latest one was solely his own masterpiece.

More than 15 color buddies are now on display in his gallery.... our bathroom. The finished products are made of rubber paint so they can be pasted on tiled or glass walls.

Not every detail of the past had been written or documented. There are missing links that keep challenging our intellect up to this time. Countless mysteries that will remain unknown and inexplicable.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN is gay.

THE LAST SUPPER has secret codes
- dubbed as one of world's most controversial mural painting done by Leonardo Da Vinci from 1494-1498. It was believed to have secret codes embedded in this master piece. There are speculations and theories regarding the supposed hidden imagery beneath the actual painting.

"The painting represents the scene of The Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples, as it is told in the Gospel of John, 13:21. Leonardo has depicted the consternation that occurred among the Twelve Disciples when Jesus announced that one of them would betray him.

The world is a place where humans and everything around live and interact freely. It's a huge expanse of varied cultures and races. People are more susceptible to change that will greatly improve the quality of life.

Now, Earth is considered to be not only a planet for shelter but a global village where mankind enjoys the comforts and luxuries of living.

As technology flourishes, everything seems to be achievable and possible. Information, experiences and new discoveries are within reach faster then ever. Geographical distance is no longer a hindrance to know people from around the world.

Communications become easier and more convenient. Through social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the world is now an open book that anybody can see and read in just a few clicks away.

So, what's the "in" thing today? I mean there's a word circulating practically in every corner of the planet. Celebrities do it. Politicians do it as well and even the most powerful and influential personalities like US President Barack Obama and His Highness Pope Francis enjoy it.

SELFIE means a photo taken by oneself using a hand-held digital camera, webcam or smartphone.

It levels up to a group selfie where the photo taker is part of the portrait.

Most people are overwhelmingly delighted to create and share their selfie photographs in various social networking sites. Some of which are dubbed to be most tweeted and shared like that of Ms Ellen DeGeneres' epic Oscars Twitter Selfie. It's being retweeted 3.4M times and favorited 2M times and counting. The popularity of selfie in the online world goes viral that even dogs do it. LOL!!!

Mosquito - the Deadliest Animal in the World

Causing more than 2 million deaths every year, the deadliest animal in the world is mosquito.

This little irritating flying creature is a nuisance that bites. It carries harmful and even fatal illnesses and considered to be public enemy number one in the fight against global infectious disease. According to National Geographic:

“Mosquitoes use exhaled carbon dioxide, body odors and temperature, and movement to home in on their victims. Only female mosquitoes have the mouth parts necessary for sucking blood. When biting with their proboscis, they stab two tubes into the skin: one to inject an enzyme that inhibits blood clotting; the other to suck blood into their bodies. They use the blood not for their own nourishment but as a source of protein for their eggs. For food, both males and females eat nectar and other plant sugars.

They transmit disease in a variety of ways. In the case of malaria, parasites attach themselves to the gut of a female mosquito and enter a host as she feeds. In other cases, such as yellow fever and dengue, a virus enters the mosquito as it feeds on an infected human and is transmitted via the mosquito’s saliva to a subsequent victim."

Based on World Health Organization (WHO), a common disease called Dengue is also considered as one of the most dangerous and endemic diseases in the world. It is actually a disease cause by a bite of the Aedes aegypti mosquito.

As a matter of fact, millions of people around the world get affected by Dengue every year. The symptoms brought about by the disease would seem like an ordinary flu at first and would just show the more serious symptoms after about three days. In mind and moderate cases of Dengue, the patient would usually suffer high fever, severe headaches as well as muscle and joint pains. But in more serious cases, the patient’s platelet count would start to drop drastically and could eventually lead to haemorrhaging if not treated early on.

We've been experiencing mosquito attack practically in every baranggay in Pasig City. An invasion that can be considered an outbreak already since this is the first time (according to my mother's recollection) in more than six decades that this sudden occurrence of huge number of bloodsucker mosquitoes happen in the city.

I've posted a status in Facebook to alarm my friends and ask if they have the same problem.

So, how can we battle such disturbing outbreak? There's a big possibility that people living in affected areas may acquire serious diseases carried by these mosquitoes. Various mosquito killers and repellents are available in the market but their population seem to multiply in triple speed and they almost outnumber the residents.

What should be done to resolve this problem?

I just hope, no illness will affect the people other than bites that may cause skin irritation and itchiness.

Go, go, go SUPERKIKO! Use that super racket to beat those mosquitoes.

There are practically million ways to enhance or edit a photograph. Modern technology offers a variety of applications in which it can be possible. Image editing can be used to manipulate or modify certain image such as correcting imperfections, re-sizing or cropping, adjusting color or any purpose for that matter. But there are applications available that can create a simple photo into a work of art.

I've posted a number of blog entries about my talented niece, Claire Dave. She can be a promising photographer. Just look at how she perfectly captured amazing jump shots here. She's fond of editing pictures of herself and created these makeovers.

Adobe Photoshop is complex and requires training to master the program but there are easier to use tools like what Claire Dave is using to create these edits:

The weather was perfect! We reached La Mesa Ecopark at around 10 in the morning of October 5, 2013. It's our first time to explore such ecological nature reserve located at East Fairview, Quezon City, Philippines.

Exchange Gifts on Christmas Parties

The spirit of Christmas is everywhere... at the malls, in the supermarkets, parks, on the streets and practically in every home. We feel an overflowing joy even through the simplest way of celebrating this special and highly anticipated time of the year.

Corporate offices, either private or government always hold parties before Christmas break. This is the perfect time for top management and employees to bond. It allows colleagues to get to know each other better. It is the best way to reward deserving staffs for a job well done and boost their morale or sense of belonging in the company..

Schools have this tradition as well. Faculty members usually prepare program to be participated by selected students. Every section holds Christmas party in respective classrooms.

What's so very special and exciting about Christmas parties is the exchanging of gifts... termed as Kris Kringle or most popularly known as Monito/Monita.

It's always been our clan's tradition to have a reunion every Christmas Day and one of the occasion's highlights is gift-giving. Every family will be called to distribute their wrapped presents or sealed ampao red envelopes. We also have games and presentations hosted by the member assigned for the year. Exchange gifts will never be out of the program of course.

Ken Milleza – is another younger cousin, 7^th Grade at Pasig Catholic College. He’s into sports like basketball and a certified table tennis champ.

Claurice Sta. Ana – a close friend of Lizette, a 2^nd year college student at University of the East taking up BS Information Technology. He’s a shout caster at TNC ( TheNet.Com) Gaming Events Team.

Jayson Jalique – another close friend who is a 1st year college student at AMA taking up BS Information Technology. He loves playing DOTA( Defense of The Ancients )

Adrian Arroyo – one of Lizette’s closest friend who is also-known-as “MANOK”. He’s a basketball player and coach at the same time. Lebrone James is his favorite NBA player.

Karlo Santiago – is Lizette’s high school mate and becomes very close friend now in college. He studies at University of the East taking up BS Tourism.
LOVE – intense emotional attachment or an expression of one’s affection

Kenneth Ramirez – is a 2^nd year BSBA Marketing Management student at Pasig Catholic College. He has been a friend of Lizette since high school and remains as close friend until now.
JOY – great happiness

Martin Macatangay – one of Lizette’s close friends in college. He also studies at Polytechnic University of the Philippines. taking up BSBA majoring in Human Resource Development Management, same course as Lizette’s.
BEAUTY – a quality of brilliance and originality, visibly pleasing

Earl Santos – is our debutant’s best friend who is presently an Information and Communication Engineering Technology student at Rizal Technological University. He plays guitar.

Limar Macapinlac – her uncle or Tito who is very close to our debutant because of the small age difference. They’re like barkadas and whenever they get the chance to spent time together like summer outing and reunion, they always strike their best pose.
KINDNESS – a quality of being generous and considerate

DL De Asis – is Lizette’s uncle or Tito, who is fondly called DDEL by his pamangkins, an alumna of Ateneo De Manila, graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Management Information System… is currently a Systems Analyst at AIG Shared Services. He’s a music enthusiast and actually a good singer in his own right.
HOPE – a feeling of expectation, desire or trust and confidence

Dan De Asis – is the grandfather of our debutant. Lizette calls him DADDY, a School Service Operator at Sacred Heart Academy of Pasig. He loves playing Candy Crush and watching sports on TV are some of his favorite past time.
LIFE – the significance of existence in general

Ariel Bermudez – is the father of our debutant. She calls him PAPA, a Police Officer, currently assigned at Camp Crame. He’s a big fan of basketball. He can hardly get over new wave era and the 80’s music. Just like any other father, he has strict discipline but can be a warm companion especially when it comes to food hopping. Lizette and her Papa have one thing in common, they love to eat.

Why rose and not the other enchanting flowers?

Because, the redness of its petals is attractively domineering like a young lady who blossoms into a beautiful woman. Its thorns serve as defense against detractors and protection from pain.

Every milestone in life is a remarkable event... an occasion to celebrate and be grateful for. Nothing is worthier than appreciating God's blessings and praising Him everyday. Either in joy or sorrow, we close our eyes... kneel down to ask for guidance, and utter our intentions.

The most anticipated day has come. November 16, 2013, marked the 18th birthday of my daughter.

As we shared a momentous night in her life, we offered a prayer to ask for the Holy Spirit to come upon us and bowed our heads in God's divine presence.

Lizette Turns 18 - The Invitation

One of the most significant party essentials is the invitation. When I started to plan for my daughter's debut celebration, my major concern is to have it simple and budget-friendly yet I have to make sure that the event would turn out as elegant and sophisticated as possible.

So, how did I manage to do both? Well, I just apply the principle of canvassing with the help of online inquiries that provide a wide variety of choices in party needs. I searched the internet and discover some good finds. I have to admit that going from one shop to another never crossed my mind since, it would indeed require much of my time and effort.

I considered taking the services of Hannah's Collection which happens to be an event planner at the same time. They made the alterations for the 2 gowns that my daughter wore during the party and the invitations as well.

We've seen different types of invitations from the most expensive to the simplest ones but my daughter preferred the latter.

My first ever reading glasses

Am I old already? Age is beginning to take over my system. These are the obvious reasons:

Firstly, I have to take one dose of 10mg Amlodipine Besilate for my asymptomatic hypertension...

Secondly, I have to color my hair to cover my increasing strands of grey hair...

Thirdly, I notice that I'm no longer mentally sharp. I easily forget things unlike before when I used to memorize my poems from start to end but now, I can hardly recall my own compositions.

Fourthly, I have to wear a pair of reading glasses now. Since I have vision problems that are congenital in nature as I discussed in this post, I thought my inability to see objects that are near or read small print is another eye defect. Well, it's not a disease but a natural occurrence that affects everyone as we reach certain age, called Presbyopia.

Oh my goodness... gracious!!

I can no longer deny the fact that I'm nearing to join the club of golden girls. Few more years and I'm going to experience hot flashes, night sweats and eventually I have to say goodbye to my monthly period and say hello to menopause. This change will cause a significant drop in my estrogen level and dryness comes next.

Oh my goodness again!!

Lucky me, I still look younger than my actual age but, for those who are wrinkle-prone, they hate to see their faces in the mirror. Some would engage in cosmetic surgery like face-lifting, collagen or stem cell treatment, botox and chemical peel just to look ageless and youthful.

As age adds up, we grow older but we have to keep an optimistic view in life. Every one of us will pass through these phases and changes. It's how we accept reality and how we perceive things that will affect our being, inside-out. We have to wake up every single morning with a big smile on our face.

Dealing with physical change brought about by age depends on each individual's acceptance. Cosmetic treatments and maintenance are costly that only few can afford. But having a happy heart will radiate from within that will give us everlasting beauty.

Premiered June 10, 2013.. "My Husband's Lover" (MHL) undoubtedly captured the hearts of many viewers of any gender. A lot of people can find themselves in the story because it does not only deal with relationship issues like sex and infidelity but also highlights the value of being with the family that accepts who and what you are no matter what.

An intriguing presentation of social realities involving the homosexuals and the gay community. The story is told from the perspective of the wife through an audio narration as the incidents unfold. It explains how did her past greatly affect the present and how will her present change her future.

The Main Characters

Lally Agatep-Soriano
- portrayed by Carla Abellana, the seemingly perfect wife of Vincent.. simple, intelligent and well-mannered but is capable of doing everything just to save a marriage that is threatened to fall apart. Her battle begins with the discovery of her husband's illicit affair with a gay lover. She's determined to uncover the secrets of the man she used to love and respect... her husband of 10 years who has become a total stranger.

Vincent Soriano
- portrayed by Tom Rodriguez, Lally's loving husband who fathers two children despite being a closeted homosexual. He has no intentions of coming out as gay especially to his parents. The painful truth about his dark secret was laid open to his wife causing them to slowly drift away. His true identity is taking over and he can hardly rescue himself from drowning in deep emotions because of his break up with Eric to gain back his wife's trust.

Eric del Mundo
- portrayed by Dennis Trillo. He is Vincent's first love. An architect, smart and sophisticated. He's being openly gay gives him some kind of freedom but not from his affair with Vincent. He has always been surrounded by an ever affectionate and dependable support system... his mother and his gay best friend. With them around, he can bravely overcome the pain of losing two of his greatest passions... his job and his one true love. With them around... moving on may not be that difficult.

What do they have to say about the series?

The creation of this series ignites several controversies. GMA Network as its official airing station welcomes the scrutiny of the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) and The Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). The network said and I quote:

We believe that our program while tackling sensitive real-life situations is produced with utmost prudence and in good taste." - source

My Opinion
All of us are entitled to say what our heart and mind dictate but I believe that each of us is created equally in the eyes of GOD. HE gave us the freedom to choose and that same freedom may make or break us.

Homosexuality is a sensitive issue but we have to accept that it exists in our society. Gay people are as normal as the rest of us who deserve to be treated with respect and care.

The story of The Husband's Lover depicts a reality of life, love and relationships. It highlights the truth about how people deal with everyday situations that affect their decisions and choices in life. Love never discriminates... It's a universal feeling that should be shared just like what Eric and Lally have with Vincent. LIFE is simple... it's the people and situations that make it complicated.

I found the drama series indeed timely, relevant and intriguing. GMA Network and the brains behind this phenomenal gay-themed drama series are living up to the expectations of the viewing public. The sensitive story-line is being presented in a conservative yet realistic manner. There's no need for indecent body exposures for intimate scenes... a simple touch of hand or a meaningful eye contact between the casts will keep the viewers totally hooked.

Watching this series makes me realize that we still live in a world of imperfections. We perceive things differently. We easily judge people and despise those who faulted. We never care to understand what others may feel. If only we open our eyes and see through... we can be more humane.

We're nearing the last days of July of 2013 but I still can't get over with June because of the special days it offered to the whole family. The first part was an awesome family bonding. You can read the whole story here and the second peg of celebration was a simple yet significant day for our bundle of joy... Check this out.

The eating never stopped until our bellies get loaded so, I'm pretty sure you have an idea about the title of this post.

June 23, My PYE's BIG Day - Remembering our loved ones on their birthdays has been a tradition to many Filipinos. We may have grand celebrations or just a simple greeting will do.

Since my husband's special day was on a Sunday, we had a lunch at Buon Giorno Caffe and Bistro at the Rockwell Business Center, Ortigas, Pasig City ( beside The Medical City).

I think we were one of the first customers to come in at around 10 in the morning that day. By the way, thanks to my brother for dropping us there.

Buon Giorno is an Italian word that means "Good Morning" so the resto name itself is very inviting.

My daughter and I just took our breakfast a little less than an hour so we still have to get our appetite back but when we laid eyes on that tender and flavorful marbled Rib Eye Steak (P598), meaty and tender pork Baby Back Ribs (P598) complimented with their special barbecue sauce, both with side dishes of mixed vegies and sliced potatoes... we just have to take a bite, NO... lots of bites. OMG!

We also ordered Prosciutto a Funghi (P265) pizza with deep flavors of ham, mushrooms and oregano. These dishes are total strangers to KIKO but a plate of french fries satisfied his tummy. You can see how he really enjoyed his fave.

For our bevande or drinks - Green Mango, Ripe Mango and Watermelon Shakes for (P120) each. Iced tea (P90) was enough quencher for the birthday celebrant.

Well after that Italian treat, our next food trip would be refreshing desserts from Icebergs, Robinson's Galleria, Ortigas Ave., Quezon City.

The classic Banana Split (P145) would be my priority order and Fondue (P400) for the kids.. Quite pricey for a few slices of mixed fruits with marshmallows.

HIV and AIDS - If you have these, would you mind coming out?

When we talk about this dreaded illness, first thing that comes to our mind is DEATH. Like the big "C", when someone is inflicted with HIV or the Human Immunodeficiency Virus, victims considered it a hopeless case and knowing the fact that there's still no cure, only maintenance medications that fight the virus.. makes it even more frightening... seemingly, there's no LIFE after AIDS.

HIV and AIDS are related terms but not the same thing:

HIV is the virus that attacks and weakens the immune system but can be controlled and managed. The virus is found in blood and sexual fluids that can be transmitted through unprotected sex encounters, sharing hypodermic needles and an infected mother to her unborn child.

AIDS is a condition developed when the body has been weakened by HIV. It's the final stage of infection. Today, this incurable illness is no longer considered a death sentence rather, a chronic manageable condition. The infected person becomes more vulnerable to common sickness. Modern treatment and healthy lifestyles can prolong the person's life.

Worldwide Statistics based on amfAR:

More than 34M people now live with HIV/AIDS.
3.3M of them are under the age of 15.
In 2011, an estimated 2.5M people were newly infected with HIV.
330,000 were under the age of 15.
Every day nearly 7,000 people contract HIV—nearly 300 every hour.
In 2011, 1.7M people died from AIDS.
230,000 of them were under the age of 15.
Since the beginning of the epidemic, more than 60M people have contracted HIV and nearly 30M have died of HIV-related causes.

The BIG question is:

If you found out that you are HIV positive, would you disclose your condition to other people or come out and tell the world?

There's this story about WANGGO GALLAGA, 29-year old son of filmmaker Peque Gallaga, who announced in 2008 that he's infected with HIV. According to him and I quote:

“I was diagnosed back in August 2008 and for the past four years, I’ve been trying to tell my story so that people can learn from my mistake.”

Since he was diagnosed, he's been going around the country to share his own experiences living with HIV. It has been his advocacy to promote awareness regarding the condition, hoping to teach people especially the young generation, the lessons he learned from doing what he calls, "risky behavior".

According to the 2012 Global Report of the United Nations Programs on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the Philippines was one of nine countries where new HIV/AIDS cases increased by 25 percent from 2001 to 2011.

Records at the Department of Health showed that as of October 2012, the number of HIV cases in the country was at 11,125 since the first case in the country was reported in 1984.- (source)

In the Philippines alone, more than 1,000 Filipinos are tested HIV positive for the first quarter of 2013. The new cases affect more males than females with age group, 20-29 years old which also include OFWs.

LOVE of family and friends is of utmost significance in coping with this challenge. It is indeed a depressing situation. The battle is unimaginable but if there's a strong supportive group.. people with this condition will definitely live an almost normal life.

Merry Month of June Part 2 - A Playdate and A Cake

Kiko's 4th Birthday photos

It's been a Filipino tradition to have pancit (birthday noodles) or spaghetti included in the menu served during birthdays because according to old folks, these long noodles symbolize long life and good health.

Since we are three celebrators of June... we have three separate birthday feasts. The first one was on:

June 20, Kiko's 4th Birthday - My husband and I fetched him from school. We had lunch at Jollibee with his classmate since Pre-nursery, Ashlyn along with her Mama Rose.

After eating their fave Jollibee foods - french fries with catsup and chickenjoy with rice for Kiko, rice mixed with gravy for Ashlyn... they played together for the first time and just enjoyed the small kids' playground. They would slide down a couple of times... go back and forth to the tube and small cubicles.

We could see the overwhelming joy in their faces. I super like the top photo showing these two playdates holding hands together. So CUTE! So NAIVE!

Not to forget, we bought a small cake for him and had it written a personal message. I thought, it would not fit the space but the staff was an expert that even our names were perfectly piped on the cake.

Razon's Pancit Luglug and their special halo-halo graced the ocassion. I also ordered one bilao of Bihon from my cousin's panciteria There was no party... I just shared these foods to family and close neighbors.

Blowing his birthday cake was more than enough for my toddler. It really made his special day.

Merry Month of JUNE Part 1 - Dinner at ABE Restaurant on Father's Day

There are 12 months in the calendar but June seems to be the most celebrated month of the year aside from December which is the most anticipated season... Of course, I'm talking about my family and some circle of relatives and friends who happen to jubilate this merry month of June as well. Belated greetings to all of them.

June 16, Father's Day - We headed for Serendra, BGC, Taguig City for a family dinner. We arrived earlier than the scheduled reservation for some strolling around.

We had to stop by for some refreshing ice creams for the youngsters and hot coffee for the oldies.

This was the first time after many years that we're almost complete. Everybody's present except for one who is yet to be an official member of the family and is currently based in New York City but was able to join us via face time. Sorry for Maki baby, our pet dog who unfortunately was left home alone...

Nevertheless, it's FAMILY BONDING to the max!!

Dinner at ABE on Father's Day

Chicharong Bulaklak and the Sinuteng Baby Squid were absolutely the bestsellers that night but the rest of the foods we've ordered were superbly prepared and presented that made us all bloated.

ABE is an A-lister when it comes to Filipino dishes.

Abe (ah-beh) is the restaurant dedicated to Larry Cruz's father, the late artist-writer, gourmet and bon vivant E. Aguilar “Abe” Cruz. The restaurant serves traditional Filipino food, mostly of Capampangan origin, and gourmet dishes inspired by Abe’s travels around the world. At Abe, food is prepared and served with a great deal of love while its concept and design provide the ideal setting for friends and family who wish to dine comfortably and have a good time.

These are some of the dishes that truly satisfied our taste buds. Aside from these mouth-watering foods that we enjoyed, we were so delighted with the kind of service they have at Abe. The servers are so friendly, attentive and accommodating, in the true sense of the words.

The Day My Own LIFE Begins

These last four lines are excerpts from my poem written in 1987. I thought I would never found someone who will embrace my past, present and future, until...

THE FIRST GLANCE

Just like any other boring day of the week, I still found myself sitting on that chair inside that seemingly boring office as well. Someone knocked at the door and before I got there to open it, a guy in a blue shirt entered only to ask me, "Nandyan ba si Amy?" (Is Amy around?) That was a brief glance. The very first time I laid eyes on him. It was 14 February 1994, more than nineteen years back.

THE COURTSHIP

That short meeting was followed by few more acquaintances and several talks on the phone. His voice struck me. Actually, that’s one trait I like most about him. He always had a way to surprise me. He often paid unexpected visits. He would come to the office all the way from Cavite where he was assigned, wearing that so familiar camouflage jacket... waited for hours until I finished my work for the day.

THE CARD

After almost two months of constantly dating, I formally accepted him. That was April 8 of the same year. I gave him a card... a card with two diamonds meaning he won over my heart because he got the highest one.

There are a lot more terms of endearment we can use to address our loved ones or describe a person for various reasons. It's our unique way of calling those people dear to us. It's our means of expressing deep affection. But I preferred a unique one for me and my hubby... me as MYE and he as PYE.

two selections for a girl: Karla Ariesa and Lourina Therese, originated from

Ariel and Theresa - my husband's name and mine

Lourdes and Marina - my mother's name and name of my mother-in-law

Since, we have already a daughter and a son, the baby's gender was no longer an issue to us. But my OB-Gyne recommended a pelvic ultrasound during my fifth moth of pregnancy. The fact that I was having pre-term labor, she would like to know the fetal size, check on the placenta and amniotic fluid. She wanted to determine what caused my abdomen to harden frequently.

THE ULTRASOUND REPORT:

Within a gravid uterus is a single fetal structure, presently in cephalic presentation with biparietal diameter of 6.0 cm, femoral length of 4.5 cm and abdominal circumference of 20.4 cm equivalent to 24 weeks 3 days, 24weeks 3 days and 24 weeks 6 days age of gestation, respectively. Real time scan show active somatic movement and vigorous cardiac pulstations with HR = 134 beat/min. Placenta is posterior, grade l maturity with no evidence of previa. Amniotic fluid is aduquate with AFV = 12 cm. EFW = 773 g.

They Go GAGA over Candy Crush Saga

My daughter just started to play Candy Crush Saga

Beating the record of any video games in smartphones and Facebook is King.com's Candy Crush Saga... the most played by almost 10M people everyday, most popular game overtaking Zynga's Farmville 2 and Texas HoldEm Poker with more than 10M downloads, over 30M likes on its application page and most successful game application listed in the top 5 grossing iPhone and iPad apps. It presently holds a record of 55M times played a day across Android and iOS.

The game was released 14 November 2012 and for a span of only 18 months, King.com has become the second largest game developer in Facebook platform.

So, what's this game all about? It's about matching candies with different colors. The game is a variation of "match three" games.

Each level has a different shaped game board (the maximum game board size is 9 by 9) filled with candies of three to six different colors and sometimes obstacles.
The basic move of the game consists of swapping two candies' positions to align sets of three of the same color, whereupon they disappear, causing candies above them to collapse into the space left behind, often resulting in chain reactions.
Moves and alignments must be horizontal/vertical. The level's objectives must be met before the player runs out of moves (or time on timed levels); in each case, the player must earn enough points to get the first star (out of 3) in the scoring system.

Five different types of levels

If the player succeeds in reaching the goal in the Jelly, Ingredients, or Candy Order levels, the game does a "Sugar Crush", starting an automatic bonus round where the player's remaining moves are used to increase the score through creating various special candies on the board.
If the player does not gain 1 star from his or her score, a life is deducted. The player is given a default number of five lives, with each life restored after a half hour.
The player has the option of asking friends for more lives, buying a life restoring item, buying a special item that expands the number of lives the player has by default, or setting the date forward on their device to instantly get more.

Levels are organized into "Episodes" of 15 levels each, with the background themed to a certain setting. Currently (as of 30-May-2013) it contains 395 levels in Facebook version and 350 levels in smartphones version.

SPECIAL CANDIES:

These are created when combinations of four or more candies of the same color are matched together.

Striped Candy

When four same-colored candies are matched in a row or column a Striped Candy is created. The orientation of the stripes depends on the way the four candies were aligned. For example: creating a Striped Candy of 4 of the same color in a row creates a VERTICAL Striped Candy, while creating a Striped Candy of 4 of the same color in a column creates a HORIZONTAL Striped Candy. When this piece is matched, it will clear all of the candies in either a horizontal or vertical direction. On cascading matches that result in creating a Striped Candy, 4 identical candies in a row will create a HORIZONTAL Striped Candy and 4 identical candies in a column will create a VERTICAL Striped Candy.

Wrapper Candy

When five same-colored candies are matched in either a L, T or + shape formation a Wrapped Candy is created. When this candy is matched it explodes twice in a row, clearing a 3 by 3 box around itself each time.

Color Bomb

When five same-colored candies are matched in a single line a Color Bomb is created. When this candy is swapped with any other candy, all candies of that color are removed from the board. Sometimes when two color bombs are switched all candies on the screen are cleared and replaced

Jelly Fish:

This candy can be purchased by the Yeti Shop, and if they are matched they will clear 3 candies (with jelly) at random from the board. It can even clear the jelly behind the obstacle candies. In "Sugar Crush", a swarm of Jelly Fishes will clear out candies depending on how many moves left (3 Jelly Fishes per remaining move) after the game is cleared.

Coconut Wheel

This candy can be purchased by the Yeti Shop, and if they are swapped either horizontal or vertical, it will roll from the direction where it last swapped making the 2 other candies convert to Striped Candies in the other direction and triggered its effect. If it is matched on 2 of the same color, it will create 3 Swapped Candies instead (the same goes when it can be hit by the effect of Striped Candy).
