Located on a two acres lot, the private resort features four villas, each with private deck and exclusive beach front access to take full advantage of the spectacular sunsets and sea views.

Villa Suluwilo by COA:

“The use of simple linear plan forms, broken up into pavilions to accommodate the natural vegetation and site features dominate the layout. While the living courtyards, solid clay wall elements, open air bathrooms, “cooling” planted water features, connecting walkways, daybeds etc all have strong similarities to the Traditional Villa, it is the more creative ‘organic’ roof and the utilization of the roof space that is the essential difference in the design.

The roof lines were inspired both by the organic shell forms of the marine environment but also by the ubiquitous dhow sails seen all over the Quirimbas on the local fishing vessels. Such a roof was seen to introduce more interest and uniqueness and will be very responsive to cooling from the prevailing winds. The interlocking forms of the roofs provide additional shading on the north sides of the gables, and the sloping angle of the ridge line aids with passive cooling by allowing the warmer air to move along the ridge line and out of the gables.

The large ceiling space created by the 45-60 degree pitches are used for the Master Bedroom and Private study, both of which have elevated views of the sea while an upper level in the tower is bridged to the master suite forming a generous private bathroom.

It is proposed that certain portions of the second interlocking roof form shaded screens in order to create a variation in the possible shading opportunities within the dwelling.”

Ninety7 @ Siglap Road House by Aamer Architects

Singapore and Kuala Lumpur-based practice Aamer Architects has completed the Ninety7 @ Siglap project.

This award-winning tropical three-story curved house is located in Singapore and was designed for a bachelor and entrepreneur to accomodate his future family!

According to Aamer Taher, “He had very clear instructions on what his needs were and left the architectural form and style to us, only intervening on functional aspects of the design.”

This project won the 2011 SIA Architectural Design Award in the category Individual House.

Ninety7 @ Siglap Road by Aamer Architects:

“Magnificent views towards the city from atop Siglap Hill inspired the design. Master and family room are placed on the third level having the best views.

Living and Dining on the second level, connected with external verandahs / terraces that flow upwards and fold into the roof form with deep overhangs for sufficient shade and channeling the breeze through the whole house.

Two resort style ‘Cabana’ bedrooms are located on the ground level by the pool with a large open/covered terrace for poolside parties. A sculptural metal ‘drum’ anchors the ‘ship’ to the ground and houses the toilet/shower and barbeque pantry.

Roof gardens and timber decks provide added insulation from the sun.”

2011 SIA Architectural Design Awards Judges’ citation:

“The jury is impressed with the result of what was a very close collaboration between architect and owner, which turned out to be a very up-to-date take on a tropical language of architecture.

Once inside the house, the sensibilities and sensitivities in the spaces are apparent. The architect and the owner opted to locate the bedroom areas at the ground level, facing the pool in a private and exclusive cabana-style setting. The living and dining/entertainment areas were located at the second floor commanding the view towards the city. This arrangement gave rise to the opportunity to create the deep fluid-form patio areas which wraps around the spaces of the house. The patios doubled-up as extended entertainment areas and an environmental filter for the internal areas proper. The living areas are able to be fully opened up, back, side and front, to maximize the views and natural light and ventilation without fear of the sun and rain.

On its own, this is a beautifully crafted house. What it also does is to give its terraced neighbourhood a timely update by way of its unique and progressive but pleasantly white walled, modestly-scaled architectural presence.”

Villa T / Architrend Architecture

The context is agricultural, a plateau with sandstone walls to divide the various portions of property. Once marked by the productive outposts of the “masserie”, farms with cultivated fields and cattle, today the Ibleo territory has changed its look. Instead of scattered farmhouses, isolated and divided by farmlands, construction has gradually filled spaces, erasing the network of isolated architectural complexes gathered around courtyards, like ‘pacific forts’. Nevertheless, the site of this project has partially conserved that precious idea of ‘isolation’, and the whole design comes to grips with this context, constructing a direct relationship with the landscape, faced openly on two sides, while emerging from it thanks to an eloquent contemporary design.

The program of the compositional process is that of a large single-family house, alone at the center of a meadow, bordered by the free, linear horizon of the plateau. Here, in the midst of the grassy terrain, treated as virgin land for construction, the architecture stands out clearly as a complete entity with definite limits. But its borders are not ‘introverted’, they are open to visual enjoyment of the outside world, through the creation of outdoor living spaces, rooms without walls that become parts of the overall solution.

The relationship with the context and the sequence of the three stacked floors relies on a sort of continuous architectural ribbon that reinterprets the flavor of the Mediterranean home, developing, bending to form rooms and the roof, outdoor zones raised from the meadow like platforms, porticos and overhangs, balconies and terraces. A solid facade clad in stone, to the north, is flanked by the harmonious antithesis of the southern and eastern facades, fully glazed and open to the greenery.

They reveal the two-storey height of the living area, with the mono-beam staircase leading to the first floor, containing a studio zone and a bedroom. The daytime area is joined to the kitchen, located in the lower volume, while the luminous living and dining area emphasizes the double height of the construction, with its large pitched roof. The master bedroom zone with bath and closet is located behind the living area. The sequence living-dining-kitchen encounters two outdoor spaces: on one side, facing the living room, a terrace at ground level connects to a recessed patio faced by the underground spaces, with two bedrooms and a den, shaded for cool comfort.

Behind the kitchen, connected by a full-height glazing, an external portico is like a room without walls, open to the surrounding lawn. The white stucco and stone facings that wrap the forceful geometric design, highlighted by a red floor marker that interrupts the high corner glazing, the planes that combine, in a dynamic way, around the sloping roof, reveal the pursuit of a ‘possible Mediterranean style’ that pays attention to local history, but without copying, ready for experimentation with new possibilities.

Guilin is famous for its dramatic landscape of limestone cliffs and forests lining the Li River. It’s a hotbed for tourists, Chinese and Western alike, who go in search of the pure landscapes portrayed throughout Chinese art.
Guilin has served as the backdrop for many Chinese paintings, but also several Hollywood films—including Star Wars: Episode III, in which an entire planet’s environs were directly modeled on chains of photographs of the town’s rounded, irregular mountain peaks and tree tops. In a similar fashion, the fractured façade of this small restaurant simultaneously fragments and pieces together panoramas of forests, river, and mountainscape.

The Tianmen Mountain Restaurant sits, or rather, stands on the edge of Guilin’s serene Li River, a modest “viewfinder” unthreatened by the jagged mountain ridges towering above. The restaurant’s ground floor is elevated in response to seasonal flooding, while also providing views of the river and nearby bamboo groves. The building’s triangulated envelope is perforated on all sides, opening up the interiors to the surrounding landscape.

The 627-square meter interior space, made from a locally-sourced fir, is warm and “natural,” reflecting the woods beyond. Steel beams support the roof, while accommodating a composition of wood planks, glass, and mullions. Light falls in from all sides, from above and reflected off the river below. Of the overall impression architect Liu Chong writes: “one’s perception is surrounded by the combined power of building materiality, natural lighting and adjacent landscape. This new sense is generated by the juxtaposition of the building merging with the natural surroundings.”

“While the rain falling in drops, there was a soft, hushed secondary light around the warm interiority which constructed by fir, and the beautiful scene of river rise gleaming……Everything, the water, the air, sound, material presences, textures…… calmed people’s heart. The sense of expectation that filled them while they were sitting there.”

Laranjeiras Residence by Fernanda Marques Arquitetos Associados

São Paulo-based studio Fernanda Marques Arquitetos Associados has completed the Laranjeiras Residence project in 2009.

This 10,225 square foot summer house is located the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

“Built in a gated community on the southern coast of the state of Rio de Janeiro, this summer house, with its 950 square meter, had its architectural approach defined by the natural beauty of its surroundings: one of Brazil’s most gorgeous landscapes. Both for its technical features and for the design freedom it provides, steel was the material of choice for the house structure. Its outward look, however, is covered in wood, a device used to protect it from the sea air and make it more familiar-looking amid the green Mata Atlântica. In order to provide maximum integration between the internal and external areas, large glazed windows were used, allowing virtually every room in the house ample interaction with the landscape.

To counterbalance the use of timber, the essential element in the project’s aesthetic arrangement, interior areas were conceived with strong emphasis on the dialogue among materials, either finished or unfinished – oscillating between rustic and high-tech. To that end, one of the main challenges faced by the architect was selecting furniture and decorative pieces that were contemporary in their look yet were in keeping with the seaside mood. Also, low pieces were chosen, so that nothing would get in the way of the view out into the sea.

We mixed sophisticated and contemporary finishes (such as lacquer, mirrors and stainless steel) and more rustic ones (seagrass, reclaimed wood). The materials must also be suitable for use on the coast”, tells the architect, who also highlights the fluidity given by the airy layout and the pure and simple juxtaposition of contemporary design furniture and handcrafted pieces.”

Stone Creek Camp by Andersson Wise

Austin-based architecture and design studio Andersson Wise has completed the Stone Creek Camp project in 2008.

Built in in Bigfork, Montana, Stone Creek Camp is situated on the flanks of a long hill, leading visitors into a gradual discovery of the site.

Two gatehouse buildings announce claim to the property; a pebble and earth path leads down the hill to the master house, lodge, and guest house.

“This remote Montana Camp is situated along a sloping hill, leading visitors to discover the site progressively. From the gatehouses, a path leads down the hill to the master house, main lodge, and guesthouse. The buildings offer warm, almost cave-like spaces as well as expansive porches, open to the views and sunlight. Small windows and thick walls facing into the slope of the site are contrasted with entire walls that open up towards the lake.

Inhabitants may choose to be outdoors while inside by sliding open walls or moving outside to spaces that are more civilized than the outlying wilderness. Similarly, with each bedroom’s separate screened-in space, it is always possible to sleep in nature and yet still be secure within the building.

The materials and textures of these buildings connect them to the site. The effect is paradoxical: despite their size, the camp’s large structures seem to emerge from the rock, wood, and grasses that surround them. Like the lake, they feel as if they have been – and will be – here forever.”

Taghkanic House by Thomas Phifer and Partners

This award-winning 8,800 square foot home in Taghkanic, in the art of the historic Hudson Valley, New York, was designed by New York-based architectural firm Thomas Phifer and Partners.

Completed in 2002, this residence has won several awards in the following year, culminating in the AIA National Honor Award in 2004.

A 1,800 square foot pavilion, built mainly of glass and steel, surveys the landscape.

A 7,000 square foot substructure contains six bedrooms, six bathrooms, a study, a media room, the kitchen, the breakfast room, a wine cellar, a refrigerated cheese room, an indoor pool and a service area.

This part of the house, built into a hill, has ample illumination from windows at either end as well as skylights above.

The house sitting on a 350 acre lot, also offers a tennis court, a pond and an outdoor swimming pool.

Its owners have decided to move on and the home is on the market since last fall.

If you are interested, they ask $9,750,000.

Taghkanic House by Thomas Phifer and Partners:

“This private residence is sited high on a knoll at the edge of a forest in Columbia County New York. At the end of a winding approach along a private road through the forest, the house emerges as a simple pavilion of glass and steel nestled in the trees. To the south, the site opens to an undulating meadow, while to the west the house commands spectacular views across the Hudson River valley to the distant mountains. Organized to take advantage of the natural topography of the land, the bedrooms and private spaces are set into the hill, forming a base for the public functions in the pavilion above.

The solid materiality of the lower level contrasts with the light-filled pavilion above. The bedrooms, study and guest suite are arranged along a sky-lit corridor and open directly to the west, while the kitchen, indoor pool and service spaces face the east garden. These intimately-scaled private spaces allow for views of the exterior at a more personal scale.

The pavilion is a finely-detailed steel and glass structure that allows for 360-degree views of the landscape. An open porch on three sides acts a transition space, mediating between exposure and enclosure, direct and filtered light, and the natural world and the built environment.

A system of operable exterior sunshades, supported by the thin members of the steel structure controls sunlight and modulates the shading of the pavilion. Designed in consideration of the angles of the sun, the panels not only filter the light, but also allow the structure to breathe and transform. The addition of this simple variable (open or closed) adds complexity to the design and registers the constantly changing natural environment. At dawn and dusk, the shades absorb and reflect the dramatic light of the sky, infusing the entire pavilion with color. At night, illuminated from within, the screens transform the building into a beacon on its site.”

TAIPEI PERFORMING ARTS CENTER | AMERICAN STUDIO B+U

Urban Concept:

The proposal for the Performing Arts Center in Taipei by American Architectural Studio B+U creates a world-class institution which is characterized by both its response to its urban and cultural environment, and by its formal and structural elegance. The project embraces the concept of a Grand Plaza as being a center hub between the Shilin night market and the TRTS Jiantan station. This is achieved by lifting the multiform theater off the ground and creating a covered outdoor linkage space between Cheng De Road and Wen Lin Road. This linkage space is the center access to the grand foyer and all three theaters. On the south side the Grand Plaza transitions into a garden that gently slopes up towards Jiantan road to allow for shops and restaurants to be placed underneath and accessible from street level. Both the garden and the Grand Plaza provide a large outdoor space for the thousands of pedestrians that visit this area. The shops and restaurants are located along Wen Lin Road and Jian Tan Road and together with the Grand plaza and the garden space embrace Taipei’s lively streetscape by creating a continuous experience from the busy streets of the Shilin night market to the Performing Arts Center and the train station.

Design Concept:

The proposal for the Taipei Performing Arts Center is intended to become an important landmark building in the region that expresses the richness and diversity of performing arts and creates a destination point for the area. For the development of the design we used a unique process using actual sounds as a basis. The morphology and shape of the building was designed using sound-waves that were analyzed and transformed into three dimensional vectors. These vectors became the formal and structural framework for the design of the exterior envelope. The building materializes with a metal and glass enclosure that reveals its activities in a variety of scales and angles to the city.

Organizational Concept:

Front of House – The three theaters are grouped around a center foyer accessible from the Grand Plaza. The Grand Theater and the Playhouse are located to the north while the Multiform Theater is lifted of the ground and connected to the foyer on the south side. The concept for the front of house was to create a spectacular center lobby space enclosed with glass and a Grand Stair case that connects to the main foyer of each theater. This creates a visual relationship between all three theaters and the foyers around a center space. Its’ dynamic shape and glass facades is to encourage the people of Taipei to explore the building and embrace it as an exciting artistic showplace for the public. Each theater has a single control point at the main foyer level and individual circulation from there to the upper gallery levels. This allows for the general public to experience this space without necessarily accessing the theaters. The ticketing, coat check and general information for all three theaters is located on the ground level.Theater Concept – The concept for the theaters was to design a flexible world class performance space that allows for a variety of different performance genres and is especially tailored to the needs of the Taiwanese interdisciplinary performing arts scene. The Grand Theater seats 1500 people with a main floor and three balcony levels. It can easily be configured to support performances that range from opera, ballet and orchestra performances to multidisciplinary performances including drama, dance, multimedia performances, drum –percussions, Zen meditation, martial arts, etc. The 800 seat Playhouse is designed as a proscenium theater with two balcony levels. However the orchestra pit was designed to support different performance styles. The Multiform Theater has a total of 800 seats with two balcony levels and maximum flexibility in regards to stage and seating layout and is designed to allow for a variety of configurations including center stage, thrust stage and front stage configurations.

Back of House -The back of house is organized most efficiently and designed as a state of the art venue that fulfills all the requirements of the various forms of contemporary performing arts and complies with the needs of Taiwan’s diverse performance culture. Back of house areas for the Grand Theater and the Playhouse are located to the north across Bailing High School and with direct and easy access to all stages. Each theater has a separate backstage access from Cheng De Road and Ji Ho Road. Both theaters share the loading dock while individual scenery assembly spaces and large orchestra rehearsal are located with direct adjacency to the stage. The majority of the rehearsal and dressing rooms are in close proximity of the stage to allow for easy and convenient access. The administration offices, conference rooms and the library are located directly above the back stage and are overlooking Bailing High School. The back of house for the Multiform Theater is located on level 5&6 on the south side and adjacent and below the Theater. The back of house area is connected to the underground loading dock with a large freight elevator. The Multiform Theater has a separate back stage access from the Grand Plaza.

Access and Parking- The main pedestrian access for all three theaters is through the Grand Foyer accessible from either Wen Lin Road and Cheng De road. In order to handle the increased volume of pedestrian traffic from the train station to the grand theater we are proposing a new under path crossing Wen Lin Road. All visitor, VIP and staff parking for the project are underground with access from Cheng De Road. The drop off zones for taxi and busses are located adjacent to the Grand Plaza along Wen Lin Road and Cheng De Road. There are two separate loading docks. One loading dock to the north adjacent to Bailing Senior High School, with access from Cheng De road. This loading dock allows for unloading on stage level for both of these theaters. The second loading dock is underground with access from Cheng De Road. It services the Multiform Theater with a large freight elevator as well as the shops and restaurants above.

Point Lonsdale Beach House by Baenziger Coles

A desire for a retreat whereby one could simply relax and entertain family and friends in comfortable interior spaces with an integral link to the outdoors. This was more about the connection with the ground rather than views of the water or the beach.

The design of the house is contemporary in its approach to design and crafted in its execution. The scale of the house respects adjoining neighbours. The site orientation and arrangement of the built forms respond and embrace the natural environment at every opportunity, as does the use of local and recycled materials. The design emulates a passion for quality, aesthetics, functionality and its relationship with the environment.

The design is based on the simple arrangement of three distinct elements – the first floor “container”, the ground floor area that contains the internal spatial arrangements and the lounge area.

Project Innovation
There are many hidden treasures, finely detailed surprises, hand crafted artefacts and trinkets that have been woven into the design of the house, many only becoming evident after closer examination. Unlike the totem pole that takes pride of place marking the entry, the 10 roof top mounted solar panels are not apparent and cannot be seen, nor can the eaves gutters which have been hidden behind the angled timber clad blades on the western and eastern facades – concealing the mechanics of the rainwater harvesting system.

Internally the house promotes openness yet the clearly defined spaces can be easily closed off or zoned for privacy and when a range of activities and events are occurring. Vertical glazed panels between the perimeter glazing interconnect the partitioned spaces and offer views from one end of the house to the other. The quality of the external architecture is clearly reflected in the interior spaces.

The use of honest, local and recycled materials complements the building’s sense of place in the context of the local area. Natural materials such as spotted gum run vertically on the upper level timber façade, and split face concrete blocks form the “bookends”. Random pattern Castlemaine slate is used as the apron finish surrounding the house and as a pathway connecting to the adjacent workshop and garage. The stone for the curved external wall that embraces and defines the outdoor BBQ and meals area was recycled from the fireplace chimney and garden bed walling of the previous house.

Design Challenge
One of the design challenges was the site – which looking at the final residence this may not be immediately apparent, but the site was basically flat and as such, relatively uninteresting in terms of being able to create a form that might respond to an undulating or sloping topography that often can give rise to something quite dynamic and interesting.

The challenge was to design a new two storey house in amongst an area dominated by single storey houses (without the new residence sticking out like a sore thumb) and to minimise the impact of bulk and any loss of solar penetration to the sites immediately adjoining the property.

The way the house is arranged suits the lifestyle and the way the owners go about their activities perfectly; from the custom board racks within the garage, to the outdoor shower, to the equipment wash down area, the “back door” entry to the internal shower with integrated timber seat and wet suit drying rail to the kitchen layout, with generous galley and food preparation area to the large internal dining area that connects seamlessly to the external barbeque and meals area. The whole design is about the wide ranging coastal activities that Point Lonsdale is so blessed with and the continual socialising with family and friends that brings the owners to the home weekend after weekend.

By acknowledging these issues and taking them into consideration, we believe the design was resolved to successfully respond to these challenges.”

Casa Ponce by Mathias Klotz

The idea is to keep the view from free access to the river, so that the house does not become a buffer that divides the ground in front and one behind. The movement is achieved with a strong spatial continuity. Ponce home raises a number of new points of view on the Rio de La Plata in a tight spot with little solar. It also attempts to capture the house most of sunlighting possible rise in the surrounding area and the natural environment of water, sky and vegetation, could provide these elements from anywhere inside the home.

Emphasizing the equilibrium with the surrounding morphology, the horizontal volumes contrast with the stone coating of the basement floor, on a material and chromatic counterpoint dialogue.

The upper floor is divided in two volumes, that intersect in the axis of horizontal and vertical circulation, conferring efficiency to the space articulation.

Based on minimal intervention, the outdoor spaces promote relaxation and enjoyment of the surroundings. Bringing the interior configuration accuracy outside, the communion needed and desired in a summer house is accomplished.

Sun Moon Lake visitor centre by Norihiko Dan and Associates

Tokyo architects Norihiko Dan and Associates have completed this visitor centre on the shore of Sun Moon Lake in Taiwan.

Housing the tourist board’s offices and an information centre for visitors, the building has a green roof and rises out of the surrounding land towards the lake.

Curved concrete channels lead round the structure towards the lake.

A basin of water between the building and the lake reflects a rippling image of the surrounding trees.

The building will open to the public on 25 February.

Sun Moon Lake Administration office of Tourism Bureau —A landform for dialog between the human being and nature

This is one of the projects from an international competition held in Taiwan in 2003 for four representative sightseeing locations in Taiwan called the Landform Series. It is a project for an environment management bureau that houses a visitor center in the Sun Moon Lake Hsiangshan area.

The site just touches the narrow inlet extending almost south-north at its northern tip, has a narrow opening facing the lake-view direction, and extends relatively deep inland along a road. Looking towards the lake, the lake surface looks like it is cutout in a V shape as mountain slopes close in from both sides.

That is, although the site is for the Sun Moon Lake Scenery management bureau, it doesn’t have a 180° view of Sun Moon Lake as can be enjoyed from the windows and terraces of the hotels standing on a typically popular site.

In most cases with sites like this, the building is positioned on the lake side to secure the greatest view possible, and thus the inland side tends to become a kind of dead space.

As the basic policy for the design, my first aim was to propose a new model for a relationship between the building and its natural environment while preserving the surrounding scenery and keeping the inland area from becoming dead space.

My second priority was to address the disadvantages of the site whose view of the Sun Moon Lake is not necessarily perfect, and to draw out and amplify the potential advantages.

One way to solve the first problem was to pursue a new relationship between the building and its surrounding landform.

Since long ago, buildings have generally been built “on” landforms, but there have been cases in which they have been built within landforms, such as the early Catholic monasteries of Cappadocia and the Yao Tong settlements along the Yellow River, and there have also been such classics as Nolli’s map that considered the building as the ground which can be curved or transformed, similarly to the landform, in a conceptual sense.

Due to the fact early modernism negated in totality the methods of self-transformation—including the poche method that belonged to pre-19th century neoclassicism in particular—and demonstrated an inability to adapt to the complex and diverse topography in such areas as east Asia, I believe that 20th century architecture actually gave rise to the phenomenon of land development projects that “flattened” mountains, an approach that is almost synonymous with the destruction of nature.

In fact, the very key to linking buildings with landforms lies in these issues that have been ignored by modernism.

In this project, in order to emphasize a sense of horizontality to the architecture, I added more soil taken from construction for the foundation to the volume of the building conventionally required, and designed a composition in which the building on the lake side and a sloping mound on the inland side are in gradual and continuous transition.

By adopting this composition I planned the design so that continuity is regained between the building and the landform to form an integrated garden rather than having the building sever the landform.

For the second theme, I designed an extensive axial layout by rerouting the approach flow-line from the road to that it extends far inland and then curving it back as far as possible via two large arches spanning 35 meters each, to create a sense of dynamism that leads to the lake surface.

Moreover, I set up a near-view water basin in contrast with the distant-view lake surface to enhance the water surface effect by mirroring the distant view upon it.

The fact it is only possible to view the lake surface distantly from a relatively narrow angle means that the site—fortunately free of nearby buildings—is surrounded 360° by a lush sea of trees.

I saw this as the second undulating surface and opened up the upper part of the building by greening it to create continuity with the natural surroundings.

These two surfaces—the union of the lake and water basin surfaces, and the resonance of the building’s greenery on the upper part with the surrounding undulating sea of trees—are connected via the tunnel-shaped diagonal path that cuts and penetrates through the interior of the building, and through the slopes carved into the building like mountain paths, to create a multitiered landform.

This half-architectural and half-landform project is conceptualized as a stage setting to bring out and amplify a hidden dimension of the scenery and environment of Sun Moon Lake, and at the same time create a new dialogue between the human being and nature that provides another new dimension to this area.

Exciting plans for the conversion of redundant utility buildings into an exemplar, low-carbon family home will be submitted later this week by Bishopsrock Properties.

As winners of a design competition, Ian Simpson Architects developed proposals for the conversion of two disused, adjacent water reservoir tanks located on an elevated site in Barnacre-with-bonds, near Garstang in North Lancashire.

The project will see a large former water tank converted to provide a stunning, contemporary interpretation of the country home containing 6 bedrooms, whilst a smaller tank will be converted to form a 2-bedroom holiday cottage, aiming to stimulate tourism and the local economy.

The views out from the site are breathtaking with the sea and the AONB highlight of Nicky Nook both being clearly visible. Daylight will flood into the main building via a series of roof lights and new glazed areas which frame inspiring views towards the sea and surrounding pastures.

The proposals will include a sweeping green roof, supporting native grass and sedum species, as part of ambitions to increase biodiversity in the area and visually enhance the setting of the building within the surrounding landscape.

The completed building’s environmental credentials will include exceptional levels of thermal insulation and the use of low-energy systems to reduce energy demand, whilst ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels form the basis for renewable energy provision.

The main tank was originally designed to hold 1 million gallons of water and was built of high-grade concrete. Borehole tests and laboratory testing concluded that the reservoir tank was in “as new” condition, even after 40 years of service.

One of the environmental impacts of concrete is that its main constituent ingredient, cement, could be considered as one of the most polluting building materials in the world. As such, it was clear that not bringing these structures back into some sort of beneficial use would have been a missed opportunity. By careful intervention, Ian Simpson Architects demonstrate that it is possible to retain large parts of the concrete structure therefore significantly reducing the constructional impact of the scheme.

This development will be an exemplar of low-carbon family home design, offering credentials that stand up as sustainable at every level of scrutiny.

The Kodaira-shi Residence by Makoto Tanijiri (Suppose Design Office)

The site is located in such a manner that it has direct access from the public street; as it is level to the street, it therefore lacks solitude. However, the owners asked for a garden, a private space for the kids to play and the family to socialize in the open-air. Due to the given conditions, the program called for designing a house which would be open to the outside, yet it would be able to provide for a private space which would create a barrier between the indoors and outdoors. The total plot area is 117.29square meters (1,262.5 square feet) and building regulations restricted the building area to 50.87 square meters (547.6 square feet), leaving the residual as garden space. The principal asked for a garden which would be used as much as possible; a garden which would be part of the program and the architectural design. This would be a garden which would connect the exterior to the interior, but also act as an obstacle to the passers-by; making the courtyard as a semi-private zone.

Suppose Design Office hopes that the architectural design for the Kodaira-shi residence will be a good initiative with which to create an environment where more communities will engage in this neighbour-like environment, like those that existed in the past and which still exist today in closed communities. They anticipate that the Kodaira-shi residence will remind people of the new relationship between a city and the buildings – the buildings and the people – and re-evaluate the function, the program, and the meaning of the word HOME!

Punt Road Oval Redevelopment / Suters Architects

Situated in Tigerland, the redevelopment of the Punt Road Oval fuels the themed landscape of the Richmond Football Club. Our desire is to root the design within a Melbourne context, as well as reference the athletic grace of the human body led us to the work of sculptor Clement Meadmore.

The long narrow strip of land around Punt Road Oval allowed the continuation of this motif, with the building contorting and squeezing between the oval’s boundary and AFL Way, as it progresses towards the MCG from Punt Road.

Floor Plan

This facility is the next instalment in the club’s rich identity. It is a positive image, literally building a winner’s circle, with the elevations drawing inspiration from post-game traditions. We pictured the team standing in a circle with arms intertwined as a TV cameraman spins in the centre, capturing them as they sing: “Oh, we’re from Tigerland, a fighting fury, we’re from Tigerland!”

The design development was made more interesting by the contributions of Richmond’s passionate fan base. The importance of legibility of the club identity was spelled out loud and clear, when a preliminary design was published in the Herald Sun, prompting an online furore from the Tiger faithful – the playing strip motif was going the wrong way on one side of the building! The people had spoken, and were acknowledged through the refinement of the design.

There was respect to be paid to the Jack Dyer Stand with the continuation of the red brick grandstand. The red becomes an extension of the body of the club, its muscle beneath the club colors. It can also be viewed as a reference to Harold Thomas’s indigenous flag with the club having established a history of community involvement, particularly with indigenous groups, in Victoria and Central Australia. The new Richmond Football club houses the Korin Gamadji Institute, which is the training centre for indigenous youth and will be a life skills centrer offering vocation training and VET courses. Given the multiple uses, the redevelopment evolved from an ethos of co-location which enriches its programmatic function, with areas dedicated to football use, community use and majority of space dedicated as flexible areas able to be programmed for use by all parties at different times.

We had hoped for a legibility of architecture that speaks to the footy crowd, one driven on identity and loyalty. It has already spoken to some, as is evident in this review by former Victorian Premier Jeff Kennett: “Geez, I just bloody love this facility – it’s so Richmond, it’s so bold, it’s so audacious.”

The Cybertecture Egg by the firm James Law Cybertecture is built around the concept of creating architecture using the intangible materials of technology, multimedia, intelligence and interactivity. The Egg derives its shape from the Earth, with a desire to serve as a sustainable nucleus for the surrounding Bandra Kurla Complex. Its unique form allows for large, column-free floors, and reduces approximately 15% of the construction material that is used in a typical rectangular structure.

The Cybertecture Egg is embedded with solar panels and topped with sky gardens, harvests rainwater, treats its own sewage, cools its water using an underground reservoir, and has a façade glazed according to its orientation to the sun. All of that is topped off with an intelligent building management system that allows less energy to be utilized in spaces that are not immediately occupied.

Bailianjing park is located in the north of Pudong section of the former expo site, along the Huangpu river. Already opened during the China Expo 2010, the park claims its crucial role after the expo. While most of the expo structures are currently demolished, the park remains as a permanent public waterfront. Besides the maintenance of the china pavilion, the expo exhibition center, the Mercedes Benz stadium and the expo boulevard, it is unclear what will happen with the large amount of unoccupied land after the torn down of all the country and corporation pavilions. Continuing the theme of the expo “better city, better life” the green waterfront should function as an attractor of high quality urban developments. A series of art installations along the green belt are part of the landscape design. Among the designers for the different art installations was Taranta Creations.
Park life
If you visit the parks in shanghai, you will notice that the Chinese people use these public spaces extensively. From early in the morning till dusk, people come to the park to meet, exercise, eat or relax. You find people practicing tai chi, dancing, singing karaoke, drinking tea or playing the typical Chinese mahjong game.
The objective of our design was to create sculptures that added more than only visually quality to the park. We wanted to create an installation that enables and facilitates this typical park life. Inspired by the diversity of Chinese recreational cultures, each sculpture is designated for a specific function to suit for multiple purposes. One sculpture will be equipped with microphones and a screen, so it can be used for singing karaoke. Another will contain trays to store chess and card games. In one of the pavilions you can place bottles, for keeping your drinks cold during the hot summers. Or you can dance on the tunes produced by the “jukebox” sculpture.
Tea pavilions
The sculptures are designed as small pavilions. This way we create a reference to the ancient Chinese Fengkafei tea pavilions, which have always been small centers for recreational and social purposes. Given the location next to the river, we decided to place the pavilions on poles. Not only does this protect the pavilions against a flood from the river, but also makes people aware of this existing threat. As a contrast to the normally gray sky that you usually will experience in shanghai, we choose to execute the pavilions in fresh and bright colors. The colors in combination with the shapes give the cluster of pavilions the appearance of candy. As we believe our pavilions can be the “candy” for people to visit the park. small wind turbines placed on top of the pavilions provide the pavilions with the necessary electricity. During the night the pavilions light the environment.
Bubble gate
At the start of the path that leads towards the pavilions we place a pavilion that represents the modern version of the old Chinese gate. The bubble shape gate is a reminder of the flamboyant architecture that we have experienced at the expo pavilions.

ZMS Schwandorf Administration Building

The ZMS Schwandorf Administration Building forms part of a 450 metre landscaped noise barrier.

The task to design a new administration building, reorganize the power station compound and create a new noise protection barrier gave us the chance to dissolve the dichotomy of landscape and building to realize the deconstruction of those categories into one designed environment, to be experienced in a dynamic and curious fashion:

Built Landscape 450m long and up to 13m high, the central part of a noise protection wall with a 45 degree incline simultaneously constitutes our new administration building for over 140 m. The superimposition of building and earth wall allows us to explore and experience the landscape of this entire ensemble on various levels.

An auditorium with a visitor center unfolds from this landscape and opens up towards the power station compound. It separates from the earth wall on the upper level, resting on two radial supporting walls and cantilevers up to 20 m over the landscape. A long panoramic glass façade leans towards the power station.

The administration building underneath is sculpted into the earth wall. Meeting rooms and common areas penetrate through the wall to establish a relationship with the bordering village of Dachlhofen. The grass covered roofs of the power station workshops in south form the extension of our landscape.

MATERIALS

As for the part of the building that is situated within the core of the earth wall, a basic structure of exposed concrete is supplemented with built in furniture elements in colored MDF, wooden oak floors, and brightly painted magnesia-bonded panels for acoustic absorption on walls and door elements. Part of the exposed concrete is stained in bright colors to contrast the archaic look of the untreated concrete. Profiled glass walls allow daylight to penetrate far into the building.

All meeting and conference rooms are enclosed in frameless glass walls. The light timber structure of the upper glue-lam shell remains exposed, the diamond shaped curvilinear spaces between them are filled with acoustic panels stained in a dark purple color.

Most of the north side of the building is covered in vegetation, yet three aluminum clad meeting rooms project through the earth wall and cantilever over the slope. The southern façade with most of the offices, opens towards the power station with a band of windows resting on gabion retaining walls in dark basalt evolving out the adjacent landscape. Some of these gabion walls even penetrate into the foyer of the building.

STRUCTURE

The main structural challenges arose from the fact that we had to create an earth wall of up to 13 m height that is capable of supporting not only itself at a 45 degree slope, but also to accommodate a building within it, situated at about 6 meters above grade. It was very important to cover the building in landscape and vegetation that appears to be continuous and without indication of the shape of the building underneath.

A specially engineered and carefully balanced mixture of earths with fine aggregate and a very low percentage cement for adhesion ensures the stability of the earth wall structure, yet allows enough water to be retained to let vegetation cover the structure completely and evenly. A large portion of the building is covered with up to 6 m of the earth wall. Here the core of earth wall is built up with geo-blocks to reduce the weight of the earth wall. All this is covered with the same earth mixture and vegetation.

The upper floor of the building folds out of the wall and cantilevers up to 20 m over the upper level of the site. A pre-stressed concrete structure, initially supported by two curvilinear walls allows the auditorium and visitor center to hover over the site to allow panoramic views of the entire area. A lightweight structure of diagonally braced glue-lam beams forms the upper shell of this part.

This structure continuously evolves in shape and form, with the entire shape of the CNC milled beams following the always changing geometry of the building. A skin from 2 layers of 34mm boards bent into form and nailed at 10 degree angles to each other helps to create a very stiff shell in combination with the glue-lam beams. The entire timber structure was produced file-to-factory from 3D-plans.

Most of the materials evolve from the surrounding landscape, the industrial scape of the power station nearby and the cultural heritage of the former aluminum works on the site. For the uninitiated viewer it will be hard to discern in some places, where the actual building starts and where the earth structure does not bear any construction. Landscape features are incorporated into the building, built structures generate a new landscape. Simple and archaic spaces are contrasted with clearly artificial, refined and crafted surfaces.

“On a wider than normal site, Garden House is built in an almost Tuscan part of Sydney. Established gardens surround gracious houses with generous verandahs, traditional roof lines and materials. The house is sited to hug the sloping rear boundary, orienting to the northern sun and a new garden with established trees.

The house is a simple L-shaped plan, both containing and extending into the stepping garden. An internal garden court is hidden in the depth of the plan, bridging between the floors and inverting the line of inside and outside. Governed by a height covenant, the roof parapet line is fixed and straight.

The first floor houses the private spaces of the house, with a slightly compressed floor to ceiling height. These private spaces have precise and figured openings in the continuous brick façade. The mass of the first floor rests on the lightest of support systems, improbably hovering over the ground level.

The underside of this looping facade tilts and lifts, admitting light and views to the ground floor public rooms, through clerestory glazing. The brick façade is given a fabric like quality through its pattern, texture and treatment.

The edges of shadows are slightly corrugated by the pattern while strong sunlight flickers cinematically on the surface through the day. The woven brick surface contrasts with the glazed set render of the ground floor.

Designed as a series of archipelagos, eventually the garden will fully enclose and complete this project.”

A portico too narrow as to hold a static room and too deep as to hold a vigilance balcony. On the platform’s aerial world there is a single interior room. This room has no roof. It is barely perforated in all four directions of the landscape and its base is occupied by water, a volume of water as profound as the high that separates the house from the natural ground. This contained water, the softest patio known, always finds the way to move the sky to the bottom of the earth.”
