New scams appear every day. Now AI enters the picture, and the sophistication jumps exponentially. This week, I received a very flattering email from the Acquisition Editor of a major publishing house. The letter spoke glowingly of my work and my interest in the welfare of children. Then a query as to whether we could have a chat about my upcoming work.

The email was polished, very polished. The amusing part was that I received an email at the same time for another author with similar glowing remarks. So the clues were flawless flattery with the level of depth that it is characteristic of AI-generated text, a mis-mailed email to another author with an identical approach, and finally emailing the support people at the publishing house, who confirmed it was a scam.

As many authors feel underappreciated and have wishes to be discovered by a publishing house with the resources to truly market our glowing words, this was a wisely constructed scam, but scam it is.

So to my fellow authors, beware of silver tongues that will lead you down a prickly primrose path

I had a devil of a time getting this set up. It may be due to the apartment complex and the numerous networks that appear when I perform a scan. The Xfinity guy said that one of the problems with wireless in our building was too many routers in too small of an area. The signal strength in one area of my home was abysmal so I bought this to work as a repeater. It would have been trashed if it hadn't been for a young man named Geo who took my tech support call. He spoke clear English, knew his product, and was infinitely patient. He never, in any way, signaled he thought he was dealing with an idiot, although I felt like one when I could not get the setup correct. Geo was amazing, and if he is any indication of Wavlink's tech support, then Wavlink will be a company I can recommend. Screen grabs show the difference after installation.

The computer in the middle of the stack is the one being reviewed. I showed the stack to illustrate the different sizes in these tiny computers. The one on the top is also a Origimagic unit. The computer set up easily. The manual shows how to change the drive and the memory. I found it performs well and outperforms its little brother which is the top computer. It has a two year warranty which I hope I won’t need but it is a welcome feature not found very often. The processor runs at 7.740 which compared to the 29.253 of the bottom unit seems slow but the SSD drive and memory as well as the fast internet keeps this unit competitive with the more expensive faster unit. In basic use it is well beyond average in performance.

I like and recommend it.

I just finished reading several articles about AI-authored books. Some authors accused of using AI to write their books claim it is just to overcome writer’s block. As a self-published author in an already swamped market, this trend is discouraging. Every day, I get emails and ads telling me that I can write more and faster using an AI application. Equally, I get AI marketing advertisements suggesting how easy it is to fool people. I’m aware that AI is here to stay and I’m no Luddite, but AI is changing our lives, sometimes much faster than we want or faster than we expected.

A ten-year-old just encouraged me to try the image-generating aspect of Microsoft’s Copilot. She was excited to find an easy way to illustrate the book she is writing. I tried it, she is correct, it is astoundingly easy to produce a believable image.

This is the language I used to generate the graphic, the text that Copilot changed it to, and the image it produced.

This is not me, but it could be. Note that one of the things that AI has struggled with is hands, and these hands are done perfectly.

Many of you will find this information old news but there is a wealth of folks out there that will see this as “magic”.

I struggle to market my work because I’d rather be writing another book. So, despite being retired, writing can be laborious. I perceive my writing as art. My art, my work, perhaps delusionally, but I see it as art. I want to get my concerns about Internet safety, bullying, domestic abuse, and more in front of kids. The children’s book market is glutted with books, ghost-written, AI-written with the goal of generating income, not helping kids. The point of this diatribe is to encourage book buyers to support human authors who care about their book topics. AI writing is easy, human writing is much harder.

I will admit it, I am a fan of this series. In fact, I haven't read an Elizabeth Moon book I haven't truly enjoyed. She keeps you alert and awake as you read. This third book in the series leaves you hanging on the cliff. The beauty of reading a series that is this old is that you don't have to wait years for the results of the cliff hanger. You just buy the entire series and can sate your fantasy appetite in one beautiful orgy of consumption. The books are that good.

The action continues fast and furious in this third installment of Elizabeth Moon’s celebrated return to the fantasy world of the paladin Paksenarrion Dorthansdotter. This award-winning author has firsthand military experience and an imagination that knows no bounds. Combine those qualities with an ability to craft flesh-and-blood characters, and the result is the kind of speculative fiction that engages both heart and mind.

All is not well in the Eight Kingdoms. In Lyonya, King Kieri is about to celebrate marriage to his beloved, the half-elf Arian. This is the 2nd book in a five book series. It is excellent, I gave it five stars. I do recommend reading them in order.

I'm old, I'm not as buff as I once was, or maybe as I once thought I was. Anyway sometimes lids that I used to pop with no trouble now elict a bit of profanity, or maybe a lot of profanity.

Why Do I Write? #2

In part one, I talk about what inspires me to write a specific book. My philosophy is that if I help a single person, the book is a success.

I love to write!

I hate marketing my books. I'm aware that I could sell more books if I was more aggressive in my marketing. It annoys me that I ignore the fact that helping more than one kid should be incentive enough to be more aggressive in my marketing. The money I earn from my books gets plowed into the next book. Editors and illustrators are important to any author. I am lucky enough to have outstanding examples of both, neither are free.

I'd rather be writing a new book than selling an old one. The Catch-22 is that selling the old ones supports producing the new ones which takes time away from writing a new one.

I may be whining here, I'm not sure. Bottom line, check out my books, if you see one you like, buy it!

Growing up in a small steel town, July 4th was celebrated with gusto. Picnics and parades were standard fare. At the time, I knew it was to celebrate independence from the British Empire. Frankly, that knowledge was frequently lost in the reveling accompanying the holiday.

It may be more important today than in many decades that all citizens recognize that independence can be curtailed by political events.

Listen to the candidates and base your vote on which one will enhance your independence and which one may curtail it.

Your vote is important to maintain our way of life!

July 4th is the perfect time to remember brave souls who gave their lives to give us independence.

Don't squander it, learn about your candidates and vote in the fall!

Why Do I Write?

My writing is most often a result of conversations about issues. Whenever I’ve been in a social situation and the fact that I’m an author comes up, people inevitably ask, “You should write a book about..”. Almost everyone has a loved one who has some sort of issue they are facing. Myriad issues lead to the 52 books I’ve written so far. No doubt more are coming. I will be back here with what inspired other books I’ve written.

Mommy’s Black Eye was inspired by my work as a school counselor.

Jack’s Diabetes was inspired by Jay, a 12-year-old I met shortly after his insulin pump was installed. He was frustrated by his peer’s lack of diabetes knowledge.

Short or Tall, Doesn’t Matter at All was inspired by Rachel, an extremely self-conscious young lady who was the shortest in her school classes.

The Translator by Harriet Crawley

This book started slow but gradually grabbed me. The translator, not an interpreter is a British national, he is sent to substitute for the regular translator who had suffered an accident. Experienced but semi-retired, he has dragged back into the fray. The British Government is going to Moscow to scold the Russians for their recent behavior.

The plot becomes more complex when Clive, the translator, discovers an old flame is the translator for the Russian Premier. Emotions run high and Russian paranoia runs deep. There is a great deal of cynicism over the oligarchs reaping obscene profits. Struck me as amusing as they are so similar to the robber barons of old and the tech giants today.

There was a lot of tension and paranoia, fear, anger and a touch of action. This is a thoughtful and thought-provoking book rather than an action adventure.

I enjoyed it.

The Innocents by Bridget Walsh

This is the second in the Variety Palace Mystery series that I’ve read. Minnie and Albert, a mismatched detective team, find themselves facing multiple homicides. All the homicides seem to relate to either a Ponzi scheme or a dreadful theatrical tragedy.

Walsh does a good job setting the late 1890s scene in London. The aromas of the time jump off the page resulting in a twitching nose and a squeamish reaction to many of the settings.

The impact of privilege regarding justice seems unchanged over the ensuing years with the obvious comparison to today’s country club prisons.

The interaction of Minnie and Albert once again is the sub-plot. In the foreground, are a series of seemingly unrelated homicides and dog-fighting villains.

I enjoyed the book and recommend it.
