Chalkboard Pedestal Frames

Today I’m sharing my tutorial on how I made some chalkboard pedestal frames.

I started with a package of candle cups purchased here and some simple frames.

The first thing I did was take apart all the frames. Keep the parts for later.

Using wood glue, I stacked up 2-3 candle cups to get the various heights,

and then glued them together.

Next I painted the frames with a creamy Heirloom White,

and glazed them with Ralph Lauren’s smoke glaze.

I used a sponge brush to paint on the glaze and wiped it off with a paper towel. This leaves some glaze in the grooves of the frames for the aged look.

I did the same painting and glazing with the candle cups.

No picture (sorry) but I also painted and glazed the round wooden discs which became the “base” of the chalkboard holders (see first pic). I purchased my 4 inch round wooden discs from Michaels and Hobby Lobby. Any smaller wooden shape would work just fine!

Next, I took off the easel and hardware from the back of the frames. (Keep the thick cardboard to use when putting it back together.)

Next, I used the cardboard (in pic above) to measure my Contact chalkboard paper, and I cut a piece of chalkboard for each frame. (I purchased my Contact chalkboard paper here.)

The next step is to peel off the backing and attach the chalkboard paper to the glass. Adhering it to the glass insures a smooth writing surface. Place the glass and the cardboard backing back into the frame and now you have these:

I wanted my chalkboards to be double-sided, so using the wood glue I glued them back to back…

Then I grabbed some books to weight it down while it dried. It doesn’t take long to dry … maybe 15 minutes.

The final step is to glue all the pieces together. I glued the candle cups to the wooden discs first, then the chalkboard frames to the candle cups.

I used 4x6 and 3.5 x 5 frames. Another option would be to place the frames vertical for a bit more height. I am thrilled with how they turned out!

Fun and Easy Gift Ideas

Last week my kids and I made these reindeer noses for friends:

These were so fun and easy to make! I used Whoppers and a cherry sour for the noses and put them in snack size ziploc bags. I attached some hand made tags on the front and that was it! So bright and cheery!

A few other ideas…cover a Sprite bottle with red and black glitter paper to resemble Santa, and attach a tag that reads “May your days be Merry and Sprite”.

We turned a six pack of Dr. Pepper bottles into “Ruldolphs” with pipe cleaner antlers, google eyes and red pom pom noses:

Easy Scarf Gift Idea

I made several scarves lately and wanted to share how I did it.

First, I purchased some fleece fabric from Hancock fabrics. I used this fabric for two Baylor alums, so went with a pattern of green and gold:

I bought half a yard in order to make two scarves. I used my cutting board and rotary cutter to trim up the edges.

Next I cut the length of the fabric in two (each strip was around 8 inches wide):

To finish them up, I fringed the edges by cutting in 3 inch strips on each end of the scarf. I used straight pins to keep them even.

All done…

Then I rolled them up and topped them with ribbon and a bow!

I also made a whole stash of scarves for Christmas party favors for my daughters class at school. For this project, I used $3 fleece throw blankets from Big Lots and cut it in 6 inch wide strips using the length of the throw blanket. I was able to do 20 scarves using only two blankets.

They were a hit!

Kids Kitchen Before and After & Tutorial

I found this kids play kitchen set at a garage sale and decided to give it a makeover.

Here’s the before:

It was in pretty bad shape, with some damage to a few places and doors missing.

My husband created new shelves and support boards where needed …

And I gave everything two coats of creamy white (Behr’s Cozy Cottage)…

To get the diamond shapes, I first made an X on the surface, then spaced lines three inches apart from there. Look close to see…

The repeat going the other direction.

Lines are barely visible here, but enough to paint in the pattern:

For the doors, I pushed them together and drew my lines as if they were one big surface, that way the pattern worked across the break…

I used Behr’s Gobi Desert for the diamonds. Then I glazed it using Ralph Lauren’s Smoke glaze.

For the glaze, I used a sponge brush and just brushed it on, and wiped it off.

Repeat or wipe off as much as you need to in order to get the look you’re going for:

In this picture, the door on the left is glazed but the one on the right is only painted:

After we painted the hardware and replaced all the doors and shelves, we have a brand new play kitchen:

Christmas Subway Art Sign

I saw this sweet sign on Pinterest and wanted to make one, too.

I used my Cricut to create this fun sign on a scrap piece of wood. First, I painted it blue, then placed the letters on (except the word “little”). Then I painted it white and peeled off the letters. I freehanded the word “little” in cardinal red paint.

Next, I printed some Christmas sheet music and mod-podged it to the sides.

To finish, I sanded all the edges and corners and used a Q-tip to stain the edges. I used mahoghany-colored stain. I sealed the entire piece with glitter mod podge some extra shimmer.

I topped it off with a trio of miniature jingle bells tied with jute and hung them on the corner.

Paintbrush Ornaments

I recently created these paintbrush ornaments for a friend who loves to paint! These were so fun to do!

I started with inexpensive paint brushes from Home Depot, and taped them off for painting.

I chose these colors for the handles and applied with a foam brush:

After this dried, I covered the wooden handles and taped off the brush areas and spray painted the metal section using Rust-oleum spray paints:

After the base coats were all applied, I painted on the snowman face and then finished by hot gluing embellishments from my craft stash.

Finally, I added coordinating ribbon to the handles so they can easily hang on the tree.

Personalized Christmas Ornaments

Today I’m sharing some ornaments I painted as party favors for my daughter’s recent end-of-season soccer party.

I spray painted the wooden circles a cream color, then randomly covered them with vinyl circles I cut with my Cricut. Then I spray painted them pink and removed the vinyl to create the polka dot background.

After they dried, I used my Cricut again to create a stencil and then painted the names black.

I sealed them with a glitter mod podge and topped them off with eyelet hooks and tulle ribbon.

They make great ornaments, and after Christmas they’ll make a fun little decoration for their room!

Christmas Photo Garland

Today I’m sharing our simple photo garland for the banister. We’ve used this garland for a few years now, and I still love it.

It’s a simple garland from a discount store, with several black and white photos attached to the garland with silver glittered (decoupaged)clothespins.

The garland is attached to the banister with candy cane striped pipe cleaners.

Doesn’t get much easier … or more personal. Guests that walk in the front door are immediately greeted with a look at old Christmas photos.

Photos include trips to see Santa Claus, Christmas baking, family, decorating the tree, Christmas mornings, etc.

Scrabble Ornaments

I cut the trays to the size I needed, then used hot glue to permanently adhere the letters to the trays.

I added hooks and candy cane striped pipe cleaners for hanging. Simple and festive!

DIY Digital Image Transfer to Apron

Not long ago, I stepped out of my comfort zone and did a craft I’ve never done before. I took an image I found on the internet, and I transferred it to a canvas apron. It’s not original or even new, but I thought I’d share my process with you anyway!

First, I found an image online and opened it in my editing software. The reason it has to be opened into the editing software is so the image can be reversed (a mirror effect) since there is writing on the image.

I practiced first on copy paper to make sure the image would print backwards. Once I was satisfied, I printed on this ink jet transfer paper I bought at Walmart. (I bought the LIGHT fabric transfers because I knew I was putting the image on a light colored apron. Six sheets in a package for about $6.)

Following the directions, I heated the iron on the highest setting with NO STEAM. Also, I didn’t use an ironing board (per the directions) because apparently this process requires much pressure. My setup was this:

I used a 12x12 scrap piece of wood and covered it with a pillow case. I ironed the pillowcase first to get out all the wrinkles.

After printing and cutting out my image (with a small outer margin), I placed it face down on the apron and ironed. LOTS of pressure. NO steam. VERY slowly. Taking much CARE to get the corners ironed very well. About 2-3 minutes of steady pressure.

Next, I removed it from the hot surface and hung it up to speed up the cooling time.

After a couple minutes it was cool, so time to remove the backing.

It worked!

Yay! Now I feel like baking something!

DIY Christmas Soap Bottle

Today I’m sharing how I altered a large soap bottle that I found at Home Goods for Christmas:

After peeling off the original label, I printed Isaiah 9:6 on a clear label sheet (3M brand) and cut it to size. The label sheet is more frosty than clear, but I think that helps the text stand out.

I added a few embellishments including the rhinestone gems (stickers) and a few jingle bells on a jute string:

Apothecary Candy Jars

This project is so easy to make! It’s basically 3 jars with lids on 3 candlesticks in various sizes. Such a versatile project and they can be filled with lots of goodies for any holiday or occasion.

Here’s my version I created for a customer. I used 3 candlesticks from my crafting stash. (You can also find inexpensive ones at discount stores like Ross and just spray paint them. Or even unfinished wooden ones at the craft store.) I also used finials from Lowes, and glass jars with lids from Hobby Lobby. I adhered all the pieces together with a tube of Liquid Nails.

Halloween ideas … fill with plastic spiders, candy, licorice sticks, candy corn, eyes, a crow on a nest of shredded paper, etc.

Christmas ideas … fill with hot chocolate fixin’s (marshmallows, hot chocolate mix, peppermint pieces), nuts/candy, jingle bells, cinnamon sticks, big fat peppermint sticks, ‘snow’ and bottle brush trees, small cardinal on a grapevine wreath ‘nest’, snow globes, snowmen, gum drops, ornaments, tinsel, cookie cutters, etc.

Valentine’s Day ideas … fill with red hots candy, Hershey’s kisses, red licorice bits, chocolates, etc.

Easter ideas … fill with jelly beans, Peeps marshmallows, Easter grass, plastic eggs, birds, bunnies, seed packets, faux carrots, faux bluebonnets, etc.

July 4 … fill with lemonade fixin’s (lemonade mix, straws, drink umbrellas), silver tinsel, USA flags, red/white/blue ornaments, popcorn, faux sunflowers, stars, etc.

Halloween Teacher Gift

I found this great idea for some Halloween Teacher Gifts and wanted to share my version with you!

I purchased some small hand soaps and peeled off the labels, then used to my Cricut to cut the black vinyl letters.

For the text, I used the font “Dark Half BTN”.

I attached some festive ribbon and then hot glued different colored plastic spiders to the bottles. ( These are spider rings, and I just cut the ring part off.)

FUN! I love how they turned out. Hope the teachers do, too!

Google Eye Halloween Frame

So of course I saw this idea for Halloween photo frames on Pinterest, and decided my kids needed to try it…

We started with these supplies. We already had the glue and the sponge brushes. The frames were $1 at Michaels. The Google Eyes were $1 at Dollar Tree.

After the kids painted each frame black, I hot glued some paper flowers to each frame. And after that, the kids started gluing on eyes…

They swirled glue in small sections at a time, and then just placed the eyes.

Now I have fun photo frames to display Halloween costumes from years past!

Spider Lollipops

I keep getting such great ideas from Pinterest! This idea for Spider Lollipops came from Oh Dee Doh and it’s such a fun idea!

I purchased a bag of Tootsie Roll lollipops and cut squares from a black trash bag to cover the wrapper. Then I took three pipe cleaners (cut in half) to wrap around and create the “legs”.

Lastly, I glued some googly eyes them.

Pumpkin Bowling

Today I’m sharing an easy project using recycled bottles. I painted a few empty bottles to create some Pumpkin Bowling games for an upcoming fall festival.

I followed this tutorial from Meet The Dubiens blog. but I found it necessary to use a hair dryer to dry the paint so it wouldn’t sink to the bottom of the bottles. (Even applying heat to the outside of the bottle will help dry the paint inside.)

Angry Bird Pumpkins & More

This weekend I painted some Angry Bird pumpkins just for fun…

I used faux pumpkins from Dollar Tree. The trick to getting the colors vibrant is to do a base coat of white paint first.

I painted the faces without a pattern, but I penciled them on first to get the sizing right before grabbing the paintbrushes. I used a liner brush for the black paint, but a Sharpie marker might work just as well.

Partridge in a Pear Tree

Last year I created a few of these pears and received several requests for a tutorial. Since I’m making a few more this year, I finally posting a a tutorial with new pictures.

You can’t go wrong with a dollar craft, especially when it turns out better than you imagine. That’s why I was glad to see a few of these paper mache pears in the dollar aisle at Target a few weeks ago.

I used Folk Art’s Forest Moss and Hauser Green Light.

I just double dipped my sponge brush and then applied the paint evenly to the entire pear.

I used my Cricut to cut out a stencil of a partridge in a pear tree.

With the stencil in place, I used a scruffy brush to apply some cream paint. Make sure your brush is dry or the paint will bleed under the stencil.

I topped it with some satin ribbon and placed it on a pedestal for show. This one is a wooden pear from a friend, which I lightly distressed:

A Pink Pumpkin with Bling

Meet my daughter’s Kindergarten teacher:

We know her favorite colors happen to be bling, sparkle and glitter…so I altered a faux pumpkin for her to put in her classroom.

I spray painted the pumpkin a shabby shade of pink and then applied lots of rhinestone-y stickers to give it a little bling.

I found a glittered bow which is attached with a pipe cleaner wrapped around the stem.

The swirly sparklies are stickers from Hobby Lobby.

Halloween Apothecary Bottles - Tutorial

Today I’m sharing with you how I made my new Halloween apothecary bottles!

I started with a set of six bottles from IKEA and some strips of muslin fabric which I cut with a rotary cutter.

I folded each strip in half and hot-glued a strip to each bottle.

I made my own labels and printed them on cardstock, then cut them out and glued them to the center of each bottle.

I topped off each bottle with some tinsel and Halloween pom pom ribbon.

Candy Corn Treat

Here’s a quick, fun and easy treat the kids can help with.

You just need square pretzels, Hershey’s white chocolates, and candy corn (or M&Ms).

The kids’ job is line all the pretzels on a cookie sheet, then unwrap and place a chocolate on each pretzel.

Once the chocolates are on the pretzels, put the cookie sheet in a 325 degree oven for about three and a half minutes. When the chocolates begin to glisten/melt, take them out (watch carefully). You don’t want them to melt too much. You just want them soft.

After removing from the oven, place a candy corn on top of each chocolate and gently press it into the chocolate. You can place them in the freezer for about 5-10 minutes to set up before eating.

We’ve tried this with Rolo’s as well as M&Ms and both work great!
