Hello.

Here's a poster I whipped up for the lovely people at Go Bang!, who put on a really cool night at the Deers Head. They play really fun music, stuff that you just gotta dance too...like this...

The image in the poster is of Grace Jones, I used a halftone-effect as the image wasn't super duper quality. But I think the use of this effect is apropriate. I was thinking of NYC disco's whilst making this poster...just so you know.

I've not heard Birthday-Sex yet, but going by their name, they gotta be good, right? Get yourself down to it, have a dance, I'll see you there!

Two of my favourite people approached me recently, asking me to make them a logo for them. They're djs...the name plug came out of their old radio show. I came up with a pretty minimal solution for this. I was focusing on plugs LOADS and last minute decided to go with a switch as I like the connotations attached to switching-on.

This is just a (very) rough experiment to show how the symbol could be adapted for promotional material. Early days...

Hi! (WARNING: Long Post)

It's a new year for our wee clubnight, and now we've a new venue. I was so stoked when Ronan told me we got The Menagerie! It's without a doubt, one of my favourite venues in Belfast, being quite intimate and full of charm (not to mention having a cracking line of beers on offer).

I think TrenchFoot will be right at home.

With the new poster I tried to reference us moving to the new venue, in using an image of some army dudes digging a trench. The type and image are cut up and reassembled, again because I was thinking of us taking the clubnight apart & putting it back together. Another feature I added (as an experiment mostly) was placing the image and logo at a different angle. This way we can hang the posters in two ways. I guess some people might be more stoked off an image than type (an vice versa). Gives the viewer a bit more to work with I feel.

We have allot of plans for the clubnight this year, moving to the Menagerie is just the start...

Remember the snow? Over Christmas? There's allot of fun to be had with snow. Between sledding, snowboarding on golf courses & generally just trying to stay warm, I also managed to write the word 'PAIN' in 5-foot letters in a public place, for no real reason at all.

Hello all! I'm happy to be able to tell you that our Winter Fuel Allowance, this coming Wednesday, will be topped off by Girls Names. They just launched their new split 7" single last night at the Menagerie and it was a great evening. We even got see Sea Pinks play, as original support act Charles Hurts had to pull out due to the snow blanket.

TrenchFoot Signage!

I'm pretty damn excited about this. My good friend Michael Thomson (a.k.a. Big T-Man, Thomson, Micky T) used to work at a local delicatessen in Belfast called Arcadia (awesome shop) and whilst refurbishing a couple of years ago, they came across the old shop sign, along with colour strips, letters, numerals, the lot! Luckily it fell into Thomsons hands and has lived with him ever since. UNTIL NOW!

Yep, now we have a TrenchFoot sign...no need for it at all, it just looks fecking sweet, don't you agree? (just so you know, the sign is roughly 700mm x 400mm)

It's allot more work to set this up than I thought. I guess most people would just write what they want and thats that. But I like to make things difficult for myself and I get concerned with kerning and layout issues, things that no one at the event will care about. I can see myself being up all night with this, tweaking by hand! The little imperfections are slightly cool though I think.

Maybe you would like some personalised messages written on the TrenchFoot sign? If so, let me know, it'd be my pleasure!

New logo in development

Bonjour.

Most people won't know this but my dad is a singer (opera/classical, that sort of vibe), over the years he has performed in many a choir and on many a stage. One of the choirs he's in at the moment is called the Saint George's Singers (Belfast based). They needed a wee facelift and asked me to come up with a new logo for them, I'll probably produce some other items too.

The group are cross-community and it's non religious choir. They are however, very much traditional and their repertoire consists of mostly baroque and classical period pieces. They don't have uniform either, so no colours have been specified yo.

So this is where I am at with the mark. I don't know if this is obvious, but I have focused on the group doing what do, which is getting together to form a coherent unit (that being the Saint George Singers). So the type is loose, letting the glyphs all perform individually but still tight enough to read and work together. The arrangement of the letters mirrors that of a traditional choir stage arrangement, tiered and staggered.

If you have any feedback, comments etc. they would be most appreciated!

So it's been a busy week of Build Conference activities (which was awesome), but I managed to squeeze in another last minute TrenchFoot poster (TrenchFoot is actually a Flashmob). The third installment of TrenchFoot & (not surprisingly) the third rushed poster. It's cool though, I like being able to respond to something and produce a poster within a day/afternoon. It provides a different sense of achievement that you get when putting the lid on a project.

So as it was the third TrenchFoot, and a band with "Third" in their title, we chose to use a mathematical/geometric theme that would revolve around triangles (which are awesome shapes). I was focusing on opposing forces and things counteracting/counter balancing eachother (if that makes sense). I found all my sisters A-Level maths work books and was going to include equations but it was way too much (see pic).

A few things that helped me with this were:

TV on the Radio's, Dancing Choose video, (dir. by NCC)
Polyhedron's
Irregular shapes

That's all I can remember for now. Might follow this up with the mixtape (if there is one).Cheers!

Hi everyone (or no-one, I really have no clue if anyone looks at this blog?!) I hope you are fine and dandy and all that.

I have been continuing down the path of experimenting with my graphics tablet and getting used to/more comfortable with it. This is the latest drawing I have completed. It was a bit more prepared and thought out than the last doodle.

With job hunting at the forefront of my existence at the moment, this phrase has been floating around my brain...I constantly just want to shout it out (suppose it's a little tourette's thing?). I guess if I could just blurt it out it would cut out all the bullshit of going about getting a job. The nosebleed thing was for my own amusement, I was thinking about getting nervous and having a nosebleed and thought that was funny.

Still very much enjoying drawing and working on these typographic treatments (in between job hunting). Sure this is riddled with flaws and mistakes etc but its an exercise in using the tablet and isn't really for anything so I'll not lose sleep over it. Please do let me know your thoughts on this however, I'd love to hear what you think (seriously comment yo).

In other vastly important news, I've got British Sea Powers new EP & its great (also good value for money, £6 and clocks in at 40+minutes).

Kind of new work

Hello hello hello,

I got really lucky recently, in that my good friend Ryan (and his band of merry stormtroopers) at hartydesign, invited me to his studio to help me create something that would stand out to potential employers a bit more than a plain text email (which was what I was doing up until then).

So I ventured to his studio at the foot of the Mourne mountains, and set about learning bits and bobs of html and then designing & building the "e-mailer." I am really happy with the end result, and I can kind of show you it...

The reason why I have to show you it through a hyperlink and image, and not in your inbox, is because I came up against a few problems that I shant bore you with. I tried to get around these obstacles and send the mailer out but came up with nothing.

I could be angry that this never reached the millions and millions (about 50 people) that it was intended for, but that would be stupid. Instead, I'm just really stoked that someone helped me out and taught me something new! I learned allot in the time spent on this, and you can't knock learning new things.

Hello all...so the clubnight I was helping with has been and gone, it went really well and I think everyone had a fun evening. My role on the night was chief of welcoming, charging folk in and then stamping them...and that is what I want to share with you.

Introducing, the official Trenchfoot stamp! It clocks in at 48mm x 7mm. It was cool to be stamping something I designed onto loads of people and onto anything within reach. There's a pic of one of the flyers here too, with the "trench" ripped out of the top.

If you were there on the night, I do hope you had fun and thank you for coming, we really enjoy working on the night. If you had a crap time however, let me know aswell, because we're only rookies in this game and all criticism is important to us to try and improve on what we're doing!

Tonight is Trenchfoot! The clubnight I have been helping my good friend Ronan with. If you are in Belfast, I really hope you can make it down...what else is there to do on a Wednesday evening.
