Culled from Punch

A 24-year-old teacher, Phillip Ebong, was arrested on Wednesday by the Gowon Estate Police Division, Akowonjo, Lagos, for allegedly victimising a 14-year-old pupil (name withheld) and banning her from attending his classes.

Ebong, who teaches Physics and Chemistry at the Dee Jewels International College, Gowon Estate, Egbeda, was arrested during school hours after a complaint was lodged at the police station by Spaces for Change, a non-governmental organisation on youth development, on behalf of the pupil and her guardian, Mrs. Theresa Amaechi.

A copy of the petition made available to PUNCH Metro revealed that Ebong began harassing the victim from the first day of her enrolment in the school in January 2013.

The petition read, “On repeated occasions, Ebong invited the victim to the staff room informing her of his desire to have an intimate relationship with her. Consequently, the victim became a regular visitor to the staff room during break periods.

“On such visits, he made sexual advances to her which often involved kissing and hugging. Several times, Ebong followed her home, waiting at the gate to avoid being seen by her guardian.”

The petition alleged that under much pressure from Ebong, the victim eventually invited the teacher to her guardians’ home while they were away.

Ebong was alleged to have cajoled her to expose her private part, after fondling her breasts and kissing her.

It was said the harassment became too persistent, that the victim allegedly earned the title, “Uncle Phillip’s wife,” among her classmates and friends.

Amaechi told PUNCH Metro, “The victim is a timid girl. I did not know the extent of the harassment she was facing until she opened up to me last Friday. Earlier, she had told me Ebong was asking her for a relationship and I told her to reject his advances. I thought it would stop at that.

“I was shocked when she told me last week that she was no longer interested in staying in the science class; she wanted to switch to the arts and when I asked why, she said it was because Ebong had banned her from his classes.

“Apparently, she had told him that I was aware that he had asked her for a sexual relationship. The revelation angered him. He even went as far as threatening that she would fail her examinations,”

As at the time of Ebong’s arrest, the school principal was said to be busy as the SSS III students were taking the WAEC examination.

However the school proprietor, identified as Mrs. Azubuike, who was alerted to the development, rushed down to the school. She said the victim never made a formal report to the school.

She said, “We don’t condone such acts here. Had we been informed on time, we would have taken appropriate action.”

When confronted, Ebong allegedly denied the accusation. He blamed the entire situation on his interest in his students’ success.

He said, “I am close to all my students; that is what I was taught in the College of Education that a teacher had to be friendly. I just took an interest in the victim because I noticed she was not taking her homework seriously. All this talk of my touching and kissing her, they are all lies. I admit going to her house but it was because I wanted to see her guardian.”

Executive Director of Spaces for Change, Mrs. Victoria Ibezim-Ohaeri, said Amaechi came to her with the case on the same day her ward confided in her.

She said, “We are prepared to seek legal redress in the court should the school and police fail to investigate this matter and exercise full disciplinary action against Ebong.

“Our investigation has also shown that there are other students currently being abused by this same Ebong.

“These acts of misconduct are not only indicative of poor supervision and negligence on the part of the school authorities, but also amount to continuing breeches of the victim’s fundamental human rights.”

As of press time, PUNCH Metro gathered that the police had obtained statements from the victim’s classmates and friends.

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, when contacted, said, “I will let you know when I have the full details.”

The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Ngozi Braide, when contacted, said, “I will let you know when I have the full details.”

David Beckham is retiring from football.

The former England captain, who in January signed a deal with Paris St Germain, has opted against extending his contract with the French club and will instead hang up his boots.

In a statement he said: "I'm thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level."

He added: "If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over one hundred times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy. I'm fortunate to have realised those dreams."

It brings an end to a career quite unlike any other. The 38-year-old made his debut for Manchester United in 1992 before going on to play for Real Madrid, LA Galaxy and PSG - winning the league title with all of them and becoming the first Englishman to win the league in four different countries. The Leytonstone born footballer also featured for Italian side AC Milan on two separate loan spells.

He will now work as a sports ambassador.

BlackBerry Messenger is finally coming to the iPhone and Android phones, so you can chat with your BBM buddies without buying a BlackBerry phone -- and it'll be free.

BlackBerry announced today that the popular instant messaging service
will be available as an app for iOS and Android devices this summer.

It'll work on Apple devices running iOS 6 software or better -- iOS 7 is
due this summer -- and Android devices running Ice Cream Sandwich or
Jelly Bean.

It was BBM that made traditionally business-focused BlackBerry phones
the surprise choice for many younger phone owners, so they could chat
with friends for a flat fee rather than per message. But in recent years
the rise of even more affordable Android phones and rival IM apps such
as WhatsApp and Viber have tempted the yoof away.

Unlike WhatsApp and the rest, BBM only works on BlackBerry, so when
users abandon their BlackBerry for an Android phone, they abandon BBM
too -- until now.

"It's a statement of confidence," said BlackBerry boss Thorsten Heins,
speaking at today's BlackBerry Live event. "We are confident the time is
right for BBM to be independent."

Also at BlackBerry Live, a new budget-friendly Qwerty phone with the latest BB10 software was unveiled. The colourful Q5, successor to the Q10 and Z10, will arrive this summer.

Video Premiere: Ezi Emela Feat.

About
2,000 security operatives and military hardware, including fighter jets
have been deployed to Maiduguri ahead of yesterday’s declaration of
State of Emergency.

In neighboring Yobe State, it is not
clear how many soldiers were deployed but residents said shortly after
the declaration of state of emergency, stop and search operations have
been intensified in the state capital while movement have been
restricted in other places.

Residents said the deployment of the
federal troops, including the army, navy, air force and operatives of
the State Security Service (SSS) began at the weekend.

“We started sensing danger on Saturday
when we saw military trucks conveying soldiers to the Joint Task Force
(JTF) headquarters along Pompomari area,” Usman Jika, a resident of
Maiduguri said.

“By Sunday morning, so many roadblocks
have sprung up in the state capital and there was noticeable cordon and
search of houses by new faces (soldiers),” he said.

A resident of Kumshe, one of the red
spots in Maiduguri said his neighbour was beaten to pulp on Sunday when
soldiers besieged the areas and forced all the people out of their
houses.

“All the soldiers that came to the
neighborhood appeared new in the town, some of them said it is now time
for ‘fire for fire” he said.

Another resident said he saw military
aircrafts landing at the Maiduguri International Airport and the air
strip at the Air Force base in the state capital.

“A lot of fighting equipment have been
deployed to Maiduguri,” Hajja Maimuna, a resident of Gomari, whose
house is close to the Air Force base said.

“We are really terrified because the
military operatives coming to Maiduguri in the last two days far
outnumbered those that came during the previous emergency rule,” she
said.

“Even though the state governor has
not been removed, which is good, the truth is that Maiduguri is now a
garrison town, full of angry soldiers who are ready to kill at the
slightest provocation. The deployment will definitely hamper social and
economic life of the people,” she said.

In what appears to be about the boldest step taken by the
Federal Government in tackling the insurgency in the northern part of
Nigeria, President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday declared a state of
emergency in three states, namely: Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
In a nationwide broadcast,
President Jonathan said the growing insecurity in these troubled states
compelled him to exercise his powers as enshrined in Section 205
Subsection 1 of the Nigerian Constitution, which empowers him as the
chief security officer of the country to declare a state of emergency in
any troubled area.

The President said the state of emergency is a necessary step to halt
the insurgency of the dreaded Boko Haram members who have turned down
the offer of dialogue and amnesty extended to them by the Federal
Government.

Describing the sect’s activities as a calculated attempt to undermine
the sovereignty of the country and as a declaration of war, President
Jonathan said the activities of the terrorists have “prevented the
government from performing its constitutional responsibilities” and
caused fear among Nigerians.

Click HERE to read the full text of President Jonathan’s speech.

The Boko Haram sect has been terrorising residents of Borno, Yobe and
Adamawa States, raiding security and government establishments. On 16
April, the group raided Baga in Borno State, a town near Lake Chad that
sparked clashes with soldiers, resulting in the death of nearly 200
people.

The attacks by the sect members, which have killed hundreds since
2009, involved suicide blasts as well as coordinated gun and bomb
assaults on the security forces and other symbols of authority. The
recent attacks in the North-East have raised concern about the
increasingly brazen tactics used by the insurgents, who have insisted
they are fighting to create an Islamic state in mostly Muslim northern
Nigeria.

They also stormed the commercial centre of Bama, also in Borno State,
in a convoy of seven vehicles, launching coordinated pre-dawn attacks
on the military, police and several government buildings.

The Boko Haram conflict is estimated to have cost 3,600 lives since 2009, including killings by the security forces.

Under pressure over his approach to containing the violence,
President Jonathan created a panel to seek an amnesty deal with the
insurgents.

The declaration of state of emergency in the three states came barely
hours after the amnesty panel, headed by the Minister for Special
Duties; Kabiru Turaki met with President Jonathan at the Presidential
Villa for what was later referred to as a “frank talk” on government’s
position in dealing with the insurgents.

Governors Oppose Emergency

The Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF) had earlier kicked against the
imposition of state of emergency in the troubled states in the North,
insisting that the federal government should “ignore the ongoing
agitation for a state of emergency in some parts of the country.”

“These requests are being made by people who do not wish our country
well and who are bent on plunging the country into a deeper crisis,” the
governors noted.

The Progressives Governors’ Forum (PGF) also joined the calls against
the declaration of state of emergency in the crisis-ridden northern
states. The group had enjoined the President to eschew such a move, but
instead explore “historical perspectives and contemporary conflict
resolution methodologies for consideration before taking such a
far-reaching decision.”

The governors warned that a state of emergency would further
accentuate the high-handedness of the security operatives in the region
which has been consistently criticised by the international community.
Roberto
Mancini’s reign as Manchester City manager was brutally terminated last
night after being labelled a "failure" by the club's owners. This came
just a year after he won the Barclays Premier League title in a
dramatic fashion on the last day of the season.

His
assistant Brian Kidd has been put in charge for the last two games of
the season while they continue to chase Malaga's Chilean coach, Manuel
Pellegrini to replace him. He is expected to net a £7 million pay-off!

Angelina Jolie has double mastectomy to reduce risk of breast cancer

Angelina Jolie has revealed she has had a preventive double mastectomy to reduce her risk of developing breast cancer, and has gone public with the news to raise awareness.
The
actor has a defective gene, BRCA1, which significantly increases her
risk of developing breast cancer, the disease that killed her mother at
the age of 56, she writes in the New York Times.
Jolie
says she chose not to keep the decision private in the hope that other
women would get gene-tested. "Once I knew that this was my reality, I
decided to be proactive and to minimise the risk," she says.

Mastectomy is the medical term for the surgical removal of one or both breasts, partially or completely.

Women
with a defect in BRCA1 have on average a 65% risk of developing breast
cancer. Jolie says her doctors told her that her risk was 87% and that
surgery had reduced it to 5%. The defect also increases the risk of
ovarian cancer, which Jolie says doctors estimate is 50% for her.
The
37-year-old, who has six children – three by Brad Pitt and three
adopted – finished three months of medical procedures on 27 April. She
says she first had "nipple delay" to maximise the chances of saving her
nipples, before breast tissue removal and, nine weeks later,
reconstruction. Pitt was by her side for "every minute of the
surgeries", she said.
Jolie said her children had often
asked if she might get the illness that killed her mother, Marcheline
Bertrand. She says now: "I can tell my children that they don't need to
fear they will lose me to breast cancer.
"It is reassuring
that they see nothing that makes them uncomfortable. They can see my
small scars and that's it. Everything else is just Mommy, the same as
she always was."
Jolie adds: "I want to encourage every
woman, especially if you have a family history of breast or ovarian
cancer, to seek out the information and medical experts who can help you
through this aspect of your life, and to make your own informed
choices."

It is better to be alone than in bad company.

Your dignity may be attacked, ravaged and disgracefully mocked, but
it can never be taken away unless you willingly surrender it. It’s all
about finding the strength to defend your boundaries.

The manipulators of the world will test you from time to time to see
if you bend. Don’t let them intimidate you. When you catch them
pushing on you, push back. All it takes is once, and if they get away
with pushing you around that once – if they know they can treat you like
that – then it sets the pattern for the future.

You are stronger than them! Stick up for yourself and stop tolerating…

1. Bullying.

Bulling is not OK. Period. There is no freedom on Earth that gives
someone the right to assault who you are as a person. Sadly, some
people just won’t be happy until they’ve pushed your ego to the ground
and stomped on it. What you have to do is have the nerve to stand your
ground. Don’t give them any leeway. Nobody has the power to make you
feel small unless you give them that power.

It takes a great deal of courage to stand up to your enemies, but
just as much to stand up to your family and friends. Sometimes bullying
comes from the most unlikely places. Be cognizant of how the people
closest to you treat you, and look out for the subtle jabs they throw.
When necessary, confront them – whatever it takes to give yourself the opportunity to grow into who you really are.

2. Physical abuse of any kind.

If you have survived the wrath of a physical abuser, and you tried to
reconcile things… If you forgave, and you struggled, and even if the
expression of your grief had you succumb to outbursts of anger… If you
spent years hanging on to the notions of trust and faith, even after you
knew in your heart that those beautiful intangibles, upon which love is
built and sustained, would never be returned… And especially, if you
stood up as the barrier between an abuser and someone else, and took the
brunt of the abuse in their place…

You are a HERO.

But now it’s time to be the hero of your future. Enough is enough!

3. Supporting hatred.

As Gandhi once said, “An eye for an eye will only make the whole world blind.”

Regardless of how despicable another has acted, never let hate build
in your heart. Fighting hatred with hatred only hurts you more. When
you decide to hate someone you automatically begin digging two graves:
one for your enemy and one for yourself.

Hateful grudges are for those who insist that they are owed
something. Forgiveness, on the other hand, is for those who are strong
enough and smart enough to move on. After all, the best revenge is to
be unlike the person who hurt you. The best revenge is living well, in a
way that creates peace in your heart.

4. Negativity.

There are plenty of people in this world who will be generous when
sharing their negativity and ignorance. And while they may seem quite
eager to feed you their rubbish, please remember it’s not the diet you
need. You need positivity. So be cautious with whom you let feed your
mind and soul. Do not let the negative opinions of others destroy your
inner spirit.

Throughout your life you will meet two kinds of people: those who are
a drain on your energy and dreams, and those who give you the energy to
pursue your dreams. Avoid the first kind and cherish the second.

5. Lies.

If someone fools you once, shame on them. If someone fools you twice, shame on you.

If you catch someone lying to you, speak up. Some people will lie to
you repeatedly in a vicious effort to get you to repeat their lies over
and over until they effectively become true. Don’t partake in their
nonsense. Don’t let their lies be your reality.

Remember, an honest adversary is always better than a friend who
lies. Pay less attention to what people say, and more attention to what
they do. Their actions will show you the truth.

6. Disparaging remarks about your potential.

Never let someone’s opinion of you wash away your truth. Never
sacrifice who you are or what you aspire to be because someone else sees
things differently.

Sometimes even your closest confidants will carelessly crush your
potential with smiles on their faces. They will discredit your ideas,
exhibiting zero emotional support, and inadvertently persuade you to
forget part of the person you are, along with the person you are capable of becoming.

Don’t let weak minds convince you that you aren’t strong enough. You are.

7. Attempts to decide for you.

When you feel out of control or a little lost it can be tempting to
look for someone willing to take charge of your life for you, just to
alleviate the pressure. But before you do consider this: if you put a
collar around your own neck and hand the leash to someone else, you’ll
have no say about where they lead you in life.

When it comes to exercising your inner genius, you must listen to your inner voice.
Try what you want to try, go where you want to go and explore the
depths of your own intuition. Don’t accept false choices just because
someone else doesn’t feel what you feel. Don’t let others leash your
dreams and your future. If something feels right, it probably is. Give
yourself the fair chance you deserve.

Final Thoughts

This is your life. You may not be able to control all the things
people do to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them. You can
decide not to let their actions and opinions invade your heart and
mind. And above all, you can decide whom to walk beside into tomorrow,
and whom to leave behind today.

Nicki Minaj Storms ‘Teen Vogue’ / Opens Up On Traumatic Past

In a world where many a MC literally fakes it to make it, Nicki Minaj‘s difficult past comes as one of the only authentic stories to emerge from the field.

Now, as to share her story with ‘Teen Vogue‘s
impressionable readers, the Rapper has spoken on the difficulties she
faced growing up- dishing on her abusive father, being bullied at school
and how this has shaped the way she handles the entertainment industry.
See what she has to say below...

On her childhood:

“Every time my parents fought, my mother would have us move and I
would have to go to a new school, which meant I’d have to face the task
of making new friends. I dreaded it. I had butterflies in my stomach
each time: Are people going to like or hate me? … Sometimes there’d be a
fight, sometimes not. I let people know I wasn’t going to be pushed
around”.

On the music industry:

“People treat this business like
it’s high school. It can absolutely feel like one big popularity
contest, and you know what? I can’t be bothered. I can’t allow myself to
play ridiculous games with grown adults in the industry. I can’t be
nice to someone just because they’re hot right now. I can’t do it”.

On her critics:

“I used to read the bad things
people said about me, then I asked myself, ‘Why am I reading that when I
have millions of people saying great things?’ You cannot give
negativity power. I tell teens, if you’re having a problem, there’s
nothing wrong with deleting your social media. If people keep taunting
you and you keep reading it, it’s poison.”
