I have loved this beautiful dining room by Seattle designer, Kelie Grosso of Maison Luxe since I first saw it in House Beautiful a couple of years ago. There are so many lovely details from the scenic “View of India”, framed panels by de Gournay to the sumptuous turquoise Louis XVI-style dining chairs, paired with an elegant ebony dining table by Oly and a crystal chandelier. The relaxed drapery panels with grosgrain trim and ivory cowhide provide a relaxed juxtaposition to the more formal elements in the room resulting in a chic, vibrant space that is certain to be enjoyed by all who set foot in it. What is your favorite element in this room? I am torn between the gorgeous de Gournay panels and the turquoise chairs.

Pronounce: A-glo-mees-A (hard "A" sounds)

What: Back-painted glass so design show through on front using gold- & silver-leaf.

History: There is a long tradition of this technique in Italy, examples as far back as pre-Roman times. It was revived in Italy in the 13th century and then again by Jean-Baptiste Glomy, a French art dealer and decorator to which the technique received it's name.

Use: Used to gussy-up furniture, mirrors, frames, and other decorative objects. Since it is made with gold & silver-leaf it is not inexpensive. But it adds dimension and layers to an object that nothing else can. Great for adding a bit of glam to a space or introducing furniture that is not visually heavy. Light bounces around and is softer than plain mirror or glass.

Currently Obsessed: June 2014

I have been bad lately and haven’t posted one of these “Currently Obsessed” posts in a few months. I apologize as I know a lot of you enjoy them. As a creature of habit, I can sometimes get wrapped up in the same things and didn’t feel like my obsessions varied too much in the past few months, but now that summer is here, I am seeing things through a fresh set of eyes and have all kinds of fun new things to obsess about and share with you. One very exciting thing I am currently obsessed with is the impending redesign and re-launch of La Dolce Vita which will take place next Monday, June 9th! We will have a chic new look and are switching over to WordPress, which I am a little nervous about. For those of you who read LDV through a browser or email subscription, I will be sure to post reminders for a few weeks to ask you to please update your feeds and switch over to the new site on www.ladolcevitablog.com. In the meantime, here is what I can’t get enough of lately!

TV Show: It just started on Monday, but I am already loving Bravo’s Ladies of London. It’s like the Real Housewives, but in a better setting and with stylish, more cultured people including British aristocrats and some American women who strive to be completely accepted into British society. Did anyone else watch the premier? Thoughts?

Song: I have been listening to the Haim album non-stop in my car. I love every last song, but can’t get enough of “FallIng”!

Instagrammer: I visited Violet Grey’s chic retail space on Melrose Place when I was in L.A. last month and have been following them on Instagram ever since. I love their affinity for all things vintage and fabulous.

Pinterest User: Speaking of chic, everything Spanish blogger, Ms. de Winter pins is super chic. She has such a great eye and beautiful, timeless taste.

Fashion Muse: Hmm, one particular person does not come to mind right now, but I’ll tell you who it is NOT—Rihanna. Did anyone else think her look at the CFDAs this week was completely vulgar and unoriginal or am I just a prude? She left nothing to the imagination and looked like a Vegas showgirl. You know who did get it right this week? Julianne Moore in a navy Rosie Assoulin jumpsuit and Lupita Nyongo in Alexander McQueen at the Veuve Clicquot Polo Classic. They look elegant, timeless, and effortless.

Inspiring Designer: I have been obsessing over everything the great Albert Hadley ever did. He got it right every single time. His work is enduring and transcends place and time.

Color: I love the beautiful coral hue of the peonies I have been enjoying for the past several weeks. They don’t last that long, but the peony season is so short that I keep buying them like some sort of fiend. They have sort of taken over my Instagram feed!

Drink du Jour: Ice cold water during the day and a nice glass of Rose after hours. My favorite right now is Pigmentum’s Malbec Rose. If you are typically a red wine drinker, you’ll love this as it is slightly less fruity than most Roses. I find that it is really well-balanced. It’s great for a bottle under $15!

Excitement: This week, I received some amazing news that one of my design projects will be featured in one of my favorite national magazines! It is a thrilling moment for Paloma Contreras Design! I am also very excited to unveil LDV’s new look next week.

Guilty Pleasure: I am a sucker for ice cream. My husband and I just discovered this out of this world flavor. So good!

Accessory: I am loving my Christen Maxwell tote that I had custom-monogrammed at my favorite Houston store, A Bientot. It is such a versatile bag, but feels so special because of the unique and beautiful monogram.

Trips Being Planned: Unfortunately, there are no real vacations on the horizon. Luckily for me, I love my work so much that work trips are still fun and full of inspiration. I’ll be back in Los Angeles in a couple of weeks and then it’s Minneapolis and Las Vegas next month. I will definitely be visiting Melrose Place again once I am back in LA. I took the photo below on my trip there last month. So chic!

The Style Files: Susan Feldman

Since its inception in March of 2009, One Kings Lane has grown to be a household name and daily destination for all types of design aficionados. The company celebrated its fifth anniversary this year and over the course of its first five years, One Kings Lane has attracted millions of regular customers and has completely revolutionized the way in which we shop for products for our homes. One Kings Lane was born out of co-founder Susan Feldman’s very real need to furnish her home in Los Angeles after living in apartments in New York since her college years. Susan found the process of finding exactly what she wanted and needed for her home extremely daunting and longed for a one-stop-shop of sorts. As fate would have it, Susan met her business partner and co-founder of One Kings Lane, Alison Pincus shortly thereafter. The rest, as they say is history—in this case, trailblazing, game-changing history.

I have long admired Susan for her business acumen and moxie—it takes a lot of courage to try something so huge that no one has done before. I’ve recently had the pleasure of getting to know her on a more personal level and she is one of the sweetest, most upbeat people in this industry. If I had her busy travel schedule, I don’t know that I would have such great energy, so kudos to Susan! Susan is exactly the type of woman that young girls should look up to and aspire to be like. She is kind, intelligent, forward-thinking, and had the ability to identify a true need in the marketplace, subsequently creating a truly unique company that continues to differentiate itself from the competitors that have come along over the years. Susan and I recently had a conversation about her decorating style, travels, and favorite things. Enjoy!

Paloma Contreras: Has living in Los Angeles influenced the way you decorate?

Susan Feldman: Living in a home in LA after living in an apartment in Manhattan for so many years has definitely changed the way I decorate and think about my home. Living in LA is just easier and more laid back.

PC: What do you think your home says about you?

SF: My home is warm, inviting, and comfortable. I think it becomes apparent that my family is my number one priority when you look around. I enjoy entertaining in a relaxing and easy-going manner, and my home has many great nooks in which to unwind. I think you’d also be able to see that I love decorating with a good neutral palette.

PC: What do you love most about your career as Co-Founder and Chief Merchandising Officer of One Kings Lane?

SF: The amazing team of people that I get to work with and be inspired by every single day.

SF: I dream about living in a villa in Tuscany and having a constant stream of family and friends come to visit. I imagine exploring and allowing my creativity to go wild.

SF: We debuted two proprietary brands named Celandine and Delfinia last year. They are two distinct lines of bedding and bath products that our customers have absolutely loved because of the quality and style. Over the weekend, I was in the mood to watch a movie, but wasn’t sure what. As I scrolled through my Netflix queue, I stumbled on The Talented Mr.Ripley—a modern classic and personal favorite starring Matt Damon, Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Cate Blanchett, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. If the stellar cast isn’t enough to make you want to watch it, then the beautiful scenery, wardrobe, and set design surely will. It had been at least a year since the last time I watched the movie, so I decided it was the perfect choice for a cozy Saturday night at home with a glass of Rose. Set in Italy during the late 1950s, the film follows Tom Ripley, played by Matt Damon as he is sent by a wealthy New Yorker to retrieve his aimless, libertine son, Dickie Greenleaf played by Jude Law. When Tom arrives in the sleepy Italian seaside village, he finds Dickie with his beautiful American fiancée, Marge, played by Gwyneth Paltrow and he proceeds to befriend them. We quickly find out that Tom has ulterior motives, many dark secrets, and a sinister side. The plot, as well as the scenery, unfold beautifully. I’m sure most of you have probably seen this film and consider it a favorite as well, but if you haven’t you should be sure to watch it as soon as you can!

The suspenseful plot is sure to stay with you for a while. It’s hard to get it out of one’s head, but the beautiful European scenery, splendid interiors, and the wardrobe, especially Marge’s are sure to leave you feeling inspired as well.

Earlier this week, Domaine featured Nashville interior designer, Benjamin Vandiver as their “Designer Crush” and I could easily see why. One glimpse at his beautiful work and I was smitten, too! While they featured a few of his projects on Domaine, this one in particular really struck a chord with me. I love the composition of the room and the graphic contrast of black and white. The palette is completely pared back, save for a few accents—the chic burlwood table, a pair of leopard throw pillows, and the striped silk pillow on the white club chair. Sometimes, the absence of bold colors and patterns can have more visual impact than a palette filled with them. Don’t get me wrong, I love the use of color and pattern, but there really is something to be said about restraint. This particular room feels lush, inviting, and even sexy thanks to the mix of textures, interesting shapes, and striking art. I look forward to seeing more of talented Benjamin’s work.

The Mystique Hotel, is set in the mountains of Oia Santorini. The hotel features a pool, spa and restaurant, as well as many nearby activities such as snorkeling, horse back riding, sailing, etc. This is the hotel to go to if you are looking for an escape. Effortless Entertaining: Hosting Overnight Guests in Style

Hello, La Dolce Vita readers! It is Erin from Fig + Cotton again with some effortless entertaining tips. With the summer months upon us, I know many of you will be hosting friends and family for holiday weekends and last-minute sleepovers.

Some folks are natural hostesses, but for some of us, overnight guests can lead to a bit of anxiety. Below are some tried and true tips to keep your most treasured guests comfortable and happy, while leaving you relaxed and able to enjoy your weekend too!

1. The bed. Freshly cleaned (and even ironed, if you are ambitious) sheets are a must. There is something so wonderful about climbing into crisp sheets when away or at home. Also, make sure there are extra pillows and blankets close by so your guests don't feel like they need to come calling in the middle of the night. Throw a light blanket at the foot of the bed or on a chair in the room for easy access if the night turns chilly.

2. Lighting. Make sure there is adequate reading light on at least one side of the bed, both sides for bonus points. In addition, many guests will want to sleep in (hey, they are on vacay, right?), so think about ways to give them more freedom with how much light they want coming in the bedroom windows in the morning. If you have blinds or shutters, that will do just fine. If not, think about adding in some curtains before their arrival.

3. Their stuff. Whether it is a few clean drawers in the wardrobe, a free section of the closet, or even just a luggage stand, your guests need a place -- other than the floor -- to place their belongings. They will appreciate it.

4. Comforts of home. Keeping a well-stocked welcome basket in their room can truly be a life saver for your overnight guests. For tips and suggestions, see below!

5. Flowers. Always, flowers on the bedside table. Always.

6. Linens. Again, freshly cleaned, fluffy bath towels are a must. Make sure that the towels, wash cloths, and extra hand towels are in plain view so your guests know where to find what they need.

7. Toiletries. Provide an array of toiletries such as shampoo, conditioners, body wash, a fresh bar of soap, toothpaste, etc. in the guest bath. I know I usually forget SOMETHING when I travel, and it is always a welcome surprise when what I need is right in front of me.

8. Don't overbook, but do make a plan. Find out what your guests already have planned for their visit or what they are looking forward to enjoying where you live, and plan a few outings accordingly. Flexibility is key, but having a tentative plan certainly helps the weekend flow. If your guests are staying for multiple days/nights, providing them some alone time with some activity suggestions could be very welcomed.

9. Meals. Let you guests know ahead of time when and where the weekend meals will be. This will help plan their day, and get them excited for the cuisine du jour. For a fun way to communicate this to your guests, post the day's meals in the kitchen on a chalk board or even just on the fridge.

10. Have plenty of snacks and food choices available. In between meals, your guests may want to nibble or have a drink. Make sure you have easily accessible snacks and libations on hand so your guests can help themselves.

11. Don't forget about the kids. Even if you don't have little ones running around your casa, a quick trip to Target for a few age-appropriate games or movies will do wonders for your pint-sized guests. In addition, you may want to ask around for babysitting recs, in case you are planning a night on the town.

The Start of Summer

I hope you had a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! I actually took the day off yesterday and it was just what I needed in order to get ready for the busy week ahead. We have a photo shoot and a big client installation in the next few days which is sure to be eventful. I’ll be sure to share some sneak peeks over on Instagram. In the meantime, I am so glad that summer is upon us. While summer isn’t my favorite season (it’s SO hot in Houston!), I do love easy summer style. From breezy white clothes and chic sandals to stylish woven accents for the home, some pieces just look and feel like they were made specifically for the summer months. Over the weekend, I spent a little time on Pinterest and couldn’t help but notice that summer was definitely on my mind given some of my more recent pins. What images evoke thoughts of summer style for you? This week, I stumbled across this beautiful New York living room designed by one of my favorite designers, Timothy Whealon. I remember this feature well from when it ran in Veranda in October 2010 (P.S. How does time keep flying by so fast?), but it really resonated with me this week. I love the fresh color palette, mix of furniture styles, and the impact of unexpected elements like the huge centipede photograph by Fernando Laszlo. The gilded Eric Appel lamps provide a great contrast to the antique chandelier while the over-scaled pattern of the custom rug provides a fabulous focal point. The combination of these elements makes the room striking and completely unforgettable.

I love when a larger room has separate, distinct seating areas. Every piece in the room is of distinguished provenance, yet the mix feels relaxed and inviting, which is no small feat. It looks like the perfect place to spend part of the long, Memorial Day Weekend, doesn’t it?

Dissecting the Details: Blair Harris

Hello fabulous LDV readers! Nancy of Marcus Design here, and I'm thrilled to be back with another Dissecting the Details. Today's topic of interest is the living room designs of New York-based Blair Harris. I've spotted 3 key elements that Blair tends to use in her glamorous spaces, let's dissect:

I love that Blair adds a cozy little nook for reading to most of her designs. It helps the room appear 'approachable' and liveable. Add built-in book shelves that are carried over the doorway and I am in heaven!

I love the airy quality of Blair's living spaces, and the pastel tones she uses can be manipulated to appear masculine or feminine with carefully selected accessories, as in the 2 examples above.

There's nothing more appealing to the eye than symmetry. It's been tried and tested and in my books, it wins every time. Whether with simple frames above the sofa, or an elaborate layout of furnishings in a mirror-image arrangement, the effect always works!

La Dolce Vita is more than just the name of my blog, it is an active pursuit in my daily life. To me, “la dolce vita”, or the sweet life means an appreciation for life’s simple pleasures along with a love and admiration of stylish places and inspiring people. Anyone with an appreciation for living la dolce vita is probably well-acquainted with the Swanson family of Swanson Vineyards. Swanson Vineyards is a personal favorite and is a go-to for me every time I am in Napa. The setting is chic, charming, and whimsical and their wines are outstanding. Alexis Swanson Traina, Creative Director for her family’s eponymous vineyard and the cheeky label she conceptualized, Modern House Wines is the mastermind behind all of the charming nuances which have gone into creating two such special and unique brands.

We recently had a conversation to discuss how Alexis wound up working for the family business, the people who most inspire her, and what style means to her. The thing I most admire about her is that she is part of an incredibly chic and savvy family, lives an enviable lifestyle, has a rewarding and creative career, yet she is so sweet and has such a down-to-earth sensibility. There is no flash to Alexis, only substance and a heart of gold. Alexis is also the author of Alexis’ Napa a chic blog with whimsical style focusing on the chicest things Napa has to offer. It is a must-read if you’re heading to Napa Valley anytime soon.

Paloma Contreras: As Creative Director of your family’s vineyard, Swanson Vineyards, you’ve been able to create a chic, whimsical, and hip brand unlike anything else I’ve ever seen in Napa Valley. Did you always know that you would eventually work for the family business?

Alexis Swanson Traina: I graduated from college and immediately started working with my dad—and just stayed put. I didn’t go to UC Davis or arrive with any particularly valuable set of skills. I was a very good observer/listener/storyteller. I was fascinated by culture/rituals/ceremonies and the wine industry allowed me to explore and illuminate all of these. I was so lucky my Dad encouraged me to pursue all of my instincts.

PC: What do you love most about your role with Swanson Vineyards and Modern House Wines?

AST: I love the creative process and finding the freedom to express myself in a way that is relevant and connects emotionally with others.

PC: Where do you turn for inspiration?

Inspired by: The Sunset Tower Hotel

Every now and then, when I express my love of Los Angeles to people who don't live there, I'll get a few blank stares that indicate the person is thinking "Seriously? Who could possibly love LA?". I guess for some people, Los Angeles conjures thoughts of traffic, overpriced housing, and the seedy side of the entertainment industry, but I have been lucky to experience what I feel is the true spirit of Los Angeles. A spirit rooted in chic, effortless style, a warm, gracious sensibility, and an awareness of the glamour of the Hollywood of days gone by. My vision of Los Angeles is filled with images of Melrose Place, the elegant boulevards in Hancock Park, stylish hillside homes with beautiful vistas, a vibrant design scene, and inspiring, creative friends who push me to be better at what I do.

No hotel in L.A. embodies this spirit more completely than the Sunset Tower. Originally designed as a luxury apartment building in 1927 by Leland A. Bryant, the Sunset Tower was once home to Howard Hughes, John Wayne (who kept a cow on his terrace to provide fresh milk for the residents), Greta Garbo, Mae West, Marilyn Monroe, Clark Gable, Elizabeth Taylor, and Frank Sinatra. Considered one of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture, the building fell into disrepair over the years until hotelier Jeff Klein purchased the building in 2004, restoring it to its former glory along with designer Paul Fortune. In the decades since the tower had been a glamorous apartment building, it went by several names including the St. James Club and the Argyle, but Klein decided to restore its original name.

Though I have yet to stay at the Sunset Tower, I have been to the hotel's Tower Bar for dinner several times and can attest to the fact that Klein, along with his incredible staff including his legendary maitre d'hotel, Dmitri Dmitrov have created a respite from the hustle and bustle of the city that is glamorous in the most elegant, least ostentatious way. The amazing attention to detail and personal service has created what feels like a safe harbor for celebrities. Apparently, a slew of A-Listers favor the Sunset Tower because of the discreet staff and discerning clientele that aren't going to accost them in the lobby. I had dinner at Tower Bar a couple of times during my trip to LA a couple of weeks ago and plan to stay at the property and dine at the hotel again during my next trip to my home away from home. The Sunset Tower has quickly become a favorite of mine and clearly, it is for good reason.

There is something so special about the Sunset Tower. Part of it is that it straddles the line between a modern sensibility and the incomparable glamour of Old Hollywood so perfectly. Can you believe its history? I've had a few celebrity sightings at the Tower, but I'll never tell-- after all, I'd like to show my face there again! The quiet elegance, glamour, and embodiment of the spirit that anything could happen in LA will keep me coming back time after time.

This week’s fabulous room is a chic and modern, open concept living/dining room by Bay Area designer, Kriste Michelini. Featured in the new issue of Trad Home which was released yesterday, the space features a crisp, neutral pattern accented by a variety of textures. I love the clean, modern silhouettes throughout and am especially in love with the Cherner chairs.

In the dining room, Kriste utilized a show-stopping chandelier by David Weeks Studio, paired with a long antique table with herringbone inlay and leather chairs. The chic simplicity of the room is so striking.

Legends of La Cienega 2014

Last week, I had the pleasure of attending this year’s Legends of La Cienega event in Los Angeles as a social media ambassador. The event spans two and a half days, counting the opening gala, and is filled with a flurry of activity from keynote panels, presentations, power lunches, book signings, cocktail parties, and amazing networking opportunities. Designers, editors, and the who's who of design flock to L.A. for Legends every year and this year, they did so in record numbers making it the most successful Legends event thus far. I was blown away by how well attended everything was. There was a buzz and energy unlike anything I have experienced at other design events. This year's theme was "Novel Interiors: Storytelling by Design" and each of the designers invited to participate created a window based on a book of their choice, which you will see at the end of this post.

{On Wednesday night, my dear friend, Mark Sikes and I attended the Opening Night Gala sponsored by 1st Dibs and Coldwell Banker Previews at the beautiful Therien showroom with our friends Corinne, Sarah, and Amy. It felt like everyone in the design industry was there!

{On Thursday, all of the events began. The first keynote featuring Timothy Corrigan, Betsy Burnham, and Kim Alexandriuk was moderated by Veranda's Editor-in-Chief, Clinton Smith and was filled with valuable takeaways on the meaning of authenticity within our industry.}

{My favorite panel was "Don't Hate, Collaborate" about the importance of -- you guessed it-- collaboration within the design industry. Million Dollar Decorators, Martyn Lawrence Bullard, Kathryn Ireland, Nathan Turner, and Jeffrey Alan Marks served up plenty of wisdom, hilarious remarks, and personality!}

{Catherine Kwong, Chloe Redmond Warner, and Grant K. Gibson discussed looking to the past for the future of design with LUXE Editor-in-Chief, Pamela Jaccarino}

{Each day, we were treated to Power Lunches featuring delicious, healthy spreads of food served by a rather attractive catering staff.-- only in L.A. where they moonlight as actors and models!}

{Design Doyennes, Suzanne Kasler (I adore her. She is the sweetest person.) and Madeline Stuart at the ELLE DECOR Power Lunch at the Compas Showroom}

{The final keynote was a lively discussion led by Mat Sanders, Editorial Director of Domaine on the 9 Ways the Internet turned Design Upside Down with Mark D. Sikes, Estee Stanley, and actress, Sophia Bush.}

We all want our homes to have a certain level of elegance, right? A place we're proud to come home to and want to entertain in. But sometimes practicality and durability override that elegance, especially in the rooms that we really live in...like our kitchens.

This kitchen combines elegant, sophisticated finishes and fixtures with casual, approachable styling and details. The result is a truly beautiful space that is also welcoming and comfortable. Casual and elegant, don't you think? Cararra marble countertops, polished nickel faucets (at two sinks!), clean white glass-front cabinets, and a polished white tile backsplash create a clean, upscale foundation that is undoubtedly elegant. By adding an industrial light fixture, woven roman shades, a more modern stainless steel hood, and a cozy banquette in the corner, the space becomes family-friendly and ready to entertain in.

This is one of our favorite combinations. We both believe that your home should be beautiful, elegant, and a place you are proud of, but it is equally as important that it be comfortable and practical. It's important that your house feel like a home where you can kick your feet up!
