Creating Rock Texture in Watercolor – Inspired by a Cadillac Mountain Sunrise
Painting light, contrast, and texture without overworking your layers

There’s something so grounding about rocks—especially when you’re sitting on a mountaintop, watching the sun rise over the ocean. Cadillac Mountain, in Acadia National Park, is one of my favorite places to soak in that stillness. The rocks there seem to hold the light in the most magical way—especially during those golden early hours.

In watercolor, though, rocks can be tricky. It’s easy to overwork them or make them feel flat. But with a few mindful techniques, you can add texture, contrast, and structure—without losing that loose, natural feel watercolor does best.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to build texture in watercolor rocks:

1. Start with a strong value plan

Even before layering texture, the key is contrast. Identify where your darkest shadows and lightest hits will go. I usually begin with a light wash, then slowly build shadows using deeper colors like Payne’s Gray, Raw Umber, or even some subtle Indigo.

2. Layer slowly—glazing is your friend

Let each wash dry completely before adding more detail. Layering transparent glazes allows the natural watercolor granulation to show through, creating depth and subtle variation that reads like real rock.

3. Use dry brushing for rough texture

Once your surface is dry, use the side of a slightly damp brush to drag pigment across the paper. This catches the texture of the paper and creates broken marks—great for rough edges or weathered surfaces.

4. Lift to create light

Before a layer fully dries, you can lift pigment with a clean damp brush, tissue, or even a small scrubber. This helps create highlights or softer edges and mimics the unevenness of sunlit stone.

5. Try scraping or scratching (gently!)

For even more natural texture, use a palette knife or the end of your brush to gently scrape into the damp paint. It’s a great way to mimic cracks or mineral lines. Just go easy—too much can damage the paper.

In my Sunrise Magic painting, I used a mix of all these techniques to build the rocky foreground while keeping the sky and distant landscape soft and atmospheric. The contrast between bold texture and misty light really helps the scene feel balanced and grounded. You can find the Supply list for this painting there as well.

In this recent watercolor painting, I set out to capture that tense, dramatic moment just before a storm hits. You know the one—where the sky darkens, the air stills, and the cliffs seem to glow a little more intensely in the low light.

That contrast between light and dark, warm and cool, and calm and chaos became the heart of this piece.

What I focused on in this painting:

A dramatic sky, built with layered washes and unexpected color shifts
Rich orange and sienna undertones peeking through the landscape to add warmth and tension
Scraping and lifting techniques to bring texture into the rocky cliff
A moody, expressive style that’s more about feeling than precision

In this week’s tutorial, I dove into one of my favorite types of scenes to paint—loose wildflowers with a sweet little country barn (inspired by a wedding venue I visited!). If you're looking to loosen up your painting style, this one's for you.

This post is for anyone who's ever asked:

“How do I stop overworking my paintings?”
“Why does my watercolor look muddy?”
“How do I paint loosely and still end up with something that feels finished?”

Let’s walk through a few tips I shared in the video:

🖌️ 1. Start Loose—Stay Loose

One of the most common questions I get is how to keep things loose without losing form. My answer? Start loose and stay loose as long as possible. Trust the process and resist the urge to "fix" too early.

✏️ 2. Sketch Lightly

I use a mechanical drafting pencil (thanks to my husband’s military drafting days!) for a light sketch. If you mess up, go easy on your eraser—use a soft polymer or gum eraser to protect your watercolor paper.

🎨 3. Simple Supplies Are Enough

I painted this with:

Fabriano 140 lb cold press paper (bright white, 100% cotton)
Silver Black Velvet size 12 brush
A handful of primary colors

You don’t need a ton of supplies. For years I used a 12-pan Winsor & Newton set and learned how to mix everything from that. Fancy brushes and paints can come later!

🌼 4. Embrace the Blooms and Happy Accidents

Whether you’re lifting clouds with a paper towel or splattering flowers with a loaded brush—let the watercolor do its thing. You’ll often get those magical little blooms when you least expect it.

🎨 5. Color Mixing: It’s OK to Mess Up

I had a few “oops” moments where things got muddy—like when yellow mixed with a red that leaned toward purple. It happens! Just keep layering, splattering, and adjusting.

🏠 6. Keep Structures Simple

The little red barn is more of a background shape. I used a light gray wash and added shadows while it was still wet to keep things soft and natural.

🧠 7. Get Out of Your Head

When I paint while FaceTiming my mom (like I did for this one), I tend to relax more and just play. It’s a great reminder to not overthink every stroke.

🖼️ 8. Layer in Details Last

Once the main washes are dry, I switch to a smaller brush and flick in details—like stems, darker shadows, and foreground flowers.

💬 9. Everyone’s a Rookie Sometimes

Even after 20+ years, I still make "rookie" mistakes. The key is not to let it stop you—just keep painting and learning.

When to Leave It In… or Leave It Out – Watercolor Lessons from Monhegan Island, Maine

There’s a quiet kind of magic to painting coastal Maine — the way the light dances off the water, how the grass moves in the breeze, and the peaceful charm of those tucked-away island homes.

In my latest Patreon tutorial, I painted a scene from beautiful Monhegan Island, complete with ocean views, wildflowers, and a sweet little cottage. And right in front? Two Adirondack chairs — the kind that beg you to sit for a while and just be.

But here’s the thing… those chairs gave me trouble.

I traced them in to keep it simple, but since I painted the scene fairly small, they still got a bit lost. There just wasn’t enough room to include the detail I was hoping for — and they started to feel more like a distraction than part of the story.

Looking back, I probably should’ve outlined them with a fine Sharpie and added just a light wash — something to suggest them without needing much. But hey, that’s part of the process. We’re always learning.

And the beauty of being the artist?
You get to decide what stays and what goes. You’re not locked into the reference photo. You can simplify, shift, or completely change course if it helps tell the story you're aiming for.

So that’s exactly what I did: I painted the scene a second time.
This time? No chairs.

Just the view, the sky, the garden, and the stillness. It felt just as peaceful — maybe even more so. And it reminded me how freeing it is to paint something twice and let it evolve.

💡 Artist Tip:
When painting small and dealing with detailed objects (like chairs or windows), simplify. Try outlining them with pen and using a soft watercolor wash instead of overworking tiny brush details.

Mastering Rocks in Watercolor – My Top 5 Tips

If you’ve ever found yourself staring at a rocky shoreline wondering how to paint all that texture without turning your watercolor into mud… you’re not alone

Here are 5 quick tips from the session to help you rock your next rocky scene:

1. Dry Brush for Texture

Use a mostly dry brush with very little water to create the rough, uneven textures rocks are known for. It’s perfect for suggesting cracks, veins, and grit without overworking the surface.

2. Layer with Purpose

Start light and gradually build your darks. I used splattering and layering techniques to create depth — especially with cooler grays and warmer earthy tones mixed in.

3. Liner Brush Magic

A liner brush is your secret weapon for those fine, jagged lines and textures in the rocks. Try switching directions with your strokes and don’t aim for perfection — messy often looks more real! 4. Add Contrast with Pen

Controlled splattering with a toothbrush or your finger can add some grit and natural variation. I used it a few times in this piece to really make the rocks feel rugged.

If you've ever wandered the trails at Wolfe’s Neck State Park in Freeport, Maine, you already know how special it is. The rocky shoreline, the way the trees bend toward the water, the bright green against that bold Atlantic blue—it’s one of those places that just asks to be painted.

This watercolor was inspired by one of my visits there. I always bring my sketchbook and a little paint kit with me, just in case the mood strikes (and at Wolfe’s Neck, it always does). On this particular day, the light was perfect. The tide was rolling in, and the green on the cliffs felt extra vibrant. I knew I wanted to capture that moment—the stillness mixed with the movement.

When most people think of watercolor, they picture florals, fruit, or maybe a still life on a sunny table. But what really inspires me is something a little less defined—atmosphere.

I love using watercolor to explore how light moves across a sky, how color shifts at dusk or dawn, or how a simple silhouette can tell a quiet story. There’s something powerful about suggesting mood rather than spelling everything out.

In a recent study, I painted two very different skies:

One was full of bold, swirling clouds in deep violets and turquoise.
The other—soft, minimal, and inspired by the Northern Lights—used just a few layers of quiet color and gentle movement.

Both reminded me of something I return to often in my teaching:

🎨 You don’t always have to paint “things.”
You can paint light. You can paint motion. You can even paint silence.

With watercolor, you have a tool that naturally lends itself to suggestion—flow, softness, and transparency are built in. You can use value shifts and contrast to hint at light. Use wet-on-wet to mimic fog or softness. Use lifting and dry brushing to give a sense of time or texture.

This loose yellow iris came together with just a few bold strokes.
Lots of water.

There were no tight outlines or detailed sketches—just a quick moment of play with a brush and some color. It reminded me how powerful simple tools and a little confidence can be. No overthinking, just painting.

There’s something magical about lupines blooming along the Maine coast. They’re wild, imperfect, and always moving—like they’re dancing in the wind. Every year when they show up, I feel this quiet pull to paint them.

But painting lupines in watercolor can feel intimidating at first. All those little shapes, overlapping leaves, and shifting colors—it’s easy to overwork them or get caught up in the details. That’s why I wanted to share some helpful tips for capturing them in a way that feels natural, loose, and fun.

Start with the feeling, not the flower

Instead of focusing on exact shapes, begin by asking: What’s the mood I want to create?
Coastal scenes often have movement—wind in the trees, light in the sky, a breeze rolling over the water. Try to build that into your piece through your brushwork and color transitions. Let the sky blend softly. Keep your trees a bit blurry in the distance. Let the background recede so the flowers can shine.

Work from soft to bold

Lupines look best when they pop against a calm, layered background. I usually start by laying in a light wash for the sky, then adding soft distant trees using wet-on-wet or lifting to create texture and depth. This makes your purples and greens really stand out when you get to the flowers.

Layer your color with purpose

Purples can get muddy fast, especially when mixed with too much green. So take your time layering. Let the first layer dry completely, then build the richness by glazing purples and adding shadows with a bit of Payne’s Gray or Ultramarine Blue.

Tip: Don’t forget to mix some cool and warm greens to create a more natural look—nature rarely sticks to just one shade.

Suggest, don’t overdefine

Lupines have a unique structure, but you don’t need to paint every petal. A few well-placed strokes and suggestions are enough. Leave some white space, break up your shapes, and let your viewer’s eye fill in the rest.

Let go of perfection

This is something I come back to in almost every floral or landscape I paint. The most beautiful pieces often come from looseness, play, and letting watercolor do what it does best: move freely.

When in doubt—use more water, step back often, and trust the process.

Final Thought:
You don’t need to be an expert to capture something beautiful. You just need to show up, stay curious, and be open to surprises along the way. Whether you’re painting Maine’s coastline or your backyard blooms, lupines are a lovely reminder that wild and imperfect can still be absolutely stunning.

Trust me, I’ve been there. But here’s the secret: expressive florals aren’t about accuracy — they’re about feeling.

This week, I painted a bouquet of pink roses straight from my garden — and I kept it loose, messy, and playful. No sketch, no pressure. Just water, pigment, and movement.

Here are a few tips that might help you loosen up, too:

1. Start with Shapes, Not Petals

Don’t try to outline every flower. Instead, think in loose, blobby shapes — let your brush dance in circles, soften edges with clean water, and suggest where the flower is without over-explaining it.

2. Work Wet into Wet First

Get your paper damp and drop in color. Watch the paint flow and bloom. This is where the magic of watercolor really shines. You can add sharper details later — but that initial softness gives life to your florals.

3. Limit Your Palette

Too many colors can overwhelm. I like to pick 2–3 main shades (for this rose piece I used pinks and greens) and work with those. It keeps the piece cohesive and frees you up from decision fatigue.

4. Add Some Drama with Contrast

Dark leaves, bold stems, or a strong background shape can help your flowers pop. Don’t be afraid of darker tones — they give your light petals something to shine against.

Sometimes inspiration shows up when you least expect it. Garlic & Grace started as a quiet moment in my kitchen. I was sipping a glass of wine, setting a rose in water, and pulling out garlic for dinner. But when I saw the way the light hit the counter, I stopped everything and grabbed my camera—and eventually, my brushes.

🧄 What Makes a Still Life Work?

Over the years, I’ve found that still life setups don’t need to be complicated. Here are a few tips I’ve learned while working on this piece:

1. Start with What You Have

Fresh produce, glassware, flowers—even kitchen scraps—can be beautiful with the right lighting. Use what feels personal or meaningful.

2. Look for Contrast

The rough texture of garlic skins next to a delicate rose, or the soft curve of a glass catching light, adds visual interest and tells a story.

3. Keep It Simple

Too many elements can feel cluttered. I focused on three: the garlic, the rose, and the wineglass. Odd numbers tend to work well visually.

4. Use Natural Light

Soft window light gives a sense of calm and realism. Morning or late afternoon light usually works best (and has a lovely golden glow).

5. Take Photos First

Snapping a few reference shots helps you remember the composition and lighting if you’re not painting it immediately. Plus, it lets you relax and enjoy the setup.

This week in the studio, I played with one of my all-time favorite watercolor techniques—salt. Yep, good old salt.

Whether it’s sea salt, table salt, or something in between, adding it to wet watercolor can create the most amazing organic textures. And beyond the pretty patterns, this little experiment reminded me of something bigger: creativity doesn’t always need a plan.

Lilacs are one of those flowers that feel soft, romantic, and a little wild—and they make a perfect subject for letting go of tight control in your watercolor practice.

For this painting, I focused on a loose, impressionistic style—letting the paint do its thing, blending purples and soft greens with plenty of water and movement. No perfect outlines, no stress about every petal. Just the suggestion of lilacs and the feeling they give.

Sometimes, we get caught up trying to make things look just right. But florals—especially ones like lilacs—remind me that it’s okay to blur the lines. Let your water and pigment guide you, and don’t worry if it gets a little messy. That’s where the magic often lives.

I’ve been feeling like a busy bee lately—constantly buzzing between tasks. So I’m sharing a little reminders today:

In my latest video, I chat a bit about burnout, time, and why being a Patreon member means so much to me. Honestly, 80% of my time goes into everything but painting—admin, editing, emails, content planning. Mastering Water Reflections in Watercolor (and How Gouache Can Help You Fix or Finish)

Creating realistic water reflections in watercolor can be one of the trickiest techniques to master. Water is fluid, reflective, and constantly changing—capturing that with a brush takes a mix of observation, layering, and patience.

My Tips for Painting Reflections:

Start light: Lay in your base water tones using wet-on-wet to keep things soft.
Mirror shapes: Whatever’s above the waterline gets loosely mirrored below—but soften the details.
Pull down and blur: Use a damp brush to gently pull color downward while the paint is still damp for that natural ripple look.

When It’s Not Working…

Sometimes reflections end up too dark, too harsh, or just off. That’s where gouache can be a lifesaver.

Use white gouache to pull back highlights or add ripples.
Mix gouache with your watercolor paints for softer, more matte adjustments that sit on top of the paper.
Think of it as layering light on top, especially useful for sparkles, boat highlights, or cloud breaks.

Watercolor is about letting go of perfection—but also knowing when to grab a tool like gouache to guide things back.

If you’ve struggled with reflections, you’re not alone. I just finished a painting of Bunker Harbor that had me rethinking every brushstroke on the water. But I stuck with it, used a little gouache magic, and now it’s one of my favorite pieces.

Having separate areas helped me:

Watercolor Paper Sizing – Why It Matters (And What It Actually Means)

Ever wonder why your paint behaves so differently on one paper vs another?

It’s not just the brand—it’s the sizing.

What is “sizing” anyway?

In short, it’s how the paper is treated to handle water.
There are two kinds:

Internal sizing (mixed into the pulp)
External sizing (applied to the surface, usually gelatin)

Let’s break it down with two popular options I use in the studio...

Arches Watercolor Paper

Sizing: Internal + External (gelatin)

This combo makes the surface more resistant to water, which means:

Paint sits on top longer
You get brighter colors, cleaner edges, and smoother blends
It’s easier to lift or glaze without staining
Feels slightly slick when wet—great for wet-on-wet fun

Pro tip: You can rework an area more before the paper gives up on you. It’s amazing for detailed layering and vibrant results.

Canson XL Watercolor Paper

Sizing: Internal only (no surface sizing)

Because there's no extra surface sizing:

Paint sinks in fast
Colors dry softer or even dull
Lifting and blending are harder
Paper can start to pill if you fuss with it too much

Best for quick practice, flat washes, or loose sketching
Pro tip: Work quickly, or with a lighter hand to avoid damage

So, which one should you use?

Use Arches when you want more control, vibrancy, and room to layer
Use Canson for budget-friendly practice, warm-ups, or looser work

How to Paint Ocean Waves in Watercolor (Without Getting Overwhelmed)

Painting water — especially waves — can feel a little intimidating. There's motion, light, transparency, texture... it’s a lot! But it doesn’t have to be complicated.

Over the years, I’ve learned that the key to painting believable waves in watercolor is to loosen up and let the paint do a bit of the work for you.

Here are a few tips to help get you started:

1. Start Light and Build Layers

Waves have depth and transparency, and the best way to show that in watercolor is by working in layers. Begin with a light wash for the base ocean color and let it dry completely. Then, build up darker tones to show where the wave curls or where shadows form.

2. Use Brush Direction to Create Motion

Waves are constantly moving, and your brushstrokes can help show that! Use curved or diagonal strokes that follow the direction of the wave’s movement. Keep it loose and don’t overthink every line — a little imperfection adds to the energy.

3. Add Foam with Dry Brush Techniques

Foam and splashy highlights are best added with a dry brush or a touch of gouache. Load a small amount of paint on your brush and drag it lightly over the paper’s surface — this leaves behind that broken, frothy texture.

4. Don’t Forget the Sky

The colors of the ocean are often reflected from the sky. If your sky is soft and warm, try pulling some of those same tones into the water, especially near the horizon. It helps everything feel more connected and natural.

5. Lift Highlights While It’s Damp

Waves often have little highlights or shine — you can lift some paint out with a damp brush or paper towel while the paint is still damp. This creates soft, natural highlights without needing white paint.

Week 3 of the April Challenge is here, and this one’s all about slowing down, relaxing, and letting watercolor do its thing.

This week, I painted five gentle animal studies:
🐦 A sweet hummingbird
🐞 A cheerful ladybug
🐰 A soft and fuzzy bunny
🐟 A graceful koi fish
🐝 And a buzzy little bumble bee

Each one focuses on simple, calming techniques—like soft blends, wet-on-wet washes, and gentle brushwork. These little paintings are a great reminder that you don’t need to overthink it. Let the Paint Breathe — Don’t Overthink It

One of the biggest lessons watercolor teaches us is to let go. It’s easy to get caught up in making everything perfect — the shape of a wing, the exact color of a shadow — but honestly, watercolor shines when we step back and let it do its thing.

This week’s animal studies are a great reminder that you don’t need to overthink it. A few loose shapes, some soft color, and a little space to let the water move can say more than hours of detailed work.

Some of my favorite parts of these paintings are the happy little accidents — a color bloom here, a fuzzy edge there. That’s where the magic lives.

If you find yourself overworking your piece or second-guessing every brushstroke, just take a breath, loosen up your grip, and let the water lead a little. That’s when it gets fun again.

How to Get High-Quality Prints from Oil Paintings on Canvas

If you’re thinking about turning your oil paintings into prints, you want to make sure they capture all the richness, depth, and texture of the original. Here are the key steps to get professional-looking prints without losing quality.

1. Photographing or Scanning Your Artwork

Getting a high-resolution image of your painting is the first and most critical step. Unlike watercolors or digital art, oil paintings have texture, sheen, and depth that can be tricky to capture.

Use a professional camera or DSLR. A smartphone might not cut it for larger prints.
Shoot in good lighting. Natural light is best, but soft diffused lighting can help avoid glare.
Use a tripod. This prevents any blur and ensures a sharp image.
Watch for glare. Oil paint, especially with varnish, can reflect light. A polarizing filter can help reduce unwanted shine.
Take multiple shots. Different angles and exposures will help you choose the best image.

If your artwork is smaller (like an 8x10), a flatbed scanner can give you an ultra-crisp image. However, large canvas paintings are better captured with a camera.

2. Editing & Preparing the Digital File

Once you have a high-resolution image, some digital touch-ups might be needed before printing:

Adjust brightness & contrast to match the original painting.
Crop out any unwanted edges.
Sharpen details so brushstrokes and textures are clear.
Color correct for accuracy—colors can shift depending on the lighting used during photography.
Save as a TIFF or PNG for best quality (JPEGs can lose detail).

If you’re not comfortable editing, you can hire a professional or use services like Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom.

3. Choosing the Right Print Material

Not all prints are created equal! The material you print on affects the final look:

Canvas Prints: Best for replicating the look of the original, but be mindful that texture can change how details appear—especially if your original painting had a smooth surface.
Giclee Prints on Fine Art Paper: Great for high-quality reproductions with sharp details and vibrant colors. Look for 100% cotton rag or archival paper for longevity.
Metal or Acrylic Prints: These create a modern, high-gloss look, which works well for certain styles but may not suit traditional oil paintings.

When printing on canvas, choose a fine-weave option to avoid distorting small brush details.

4. Selecting Print Sizes Wisely

One of the biggest mistakes (as I learned in my video! 😅) is scaling up too much.

Stick to sizes proportional to your original piece (e.g., a 5x7 could go up to 8x10 or 11x14, but jumping to 18x24 may exaggerate flaws).
If enlarging, make sure your image resolution is at least 300 DPI to prevent blurriness.

5. Choosing a Printing Company

Not all print shops handle oil painting reproductions well, so look for:
✅ Giclee printing (museum-quality, archival inks)
✅ Custom proofing (so you can check colors before ordering in bulk)
✅ Canvas stretching/mounting options if printing on canvas

Some recommended online print services:

Easy Canvas Prints (where I ordered mine)
FinerWorks (great for fine art giclee prints)
Bay Photo (high-quality options for artists)

6. Doing a Test Print First

Before ordering large prints, always test with a smaller size or a sample swatch. This helps ensure colors and textures look how you expect before committing to a big order.

By following these steps, you’ll avoid some of the common pitfalls (like I ran into!) and get beautiful, high-quality prints that do justice to your original oil painting.

Tips for Using Needle Point Brushes

If you’re working with fine details, here are some tips to get the best results with these brushes:

🔹 Use light pressure – Since these brushes are designed for detail, pressing too hard can cause the bristles to splay.
🔹 Load your brush properly – Too much water can cause bloating, while too little may lead to dry, scratchy strokes.
🔹 Use smooth, controlled strokes – These brushes shine when used for slow, precise work rather than loose washes.
🔹 Clean them gently – Fine-point brushes can lose their shape if scrubbed aggressively. Rinse well and reshape after use.

Are They Worth It?

After testing them live, I found that the Fuumuui Needle Point Brushes performed really well for precision work. They hold a good amount of water without losing their sharp tip, making them a solid choice for fine details in watercolor. The larger brushes also worked well for the background. I was able to use the belly to hold a lot of color and the precision tip worked well around the details.
