She intimated that she was tired of always worrying about him and letting him be the decider.  The interesting thing is that this woman was a real leader at work and highly regarded for her competence. Yet at home she deferred and took on a secondary role.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;When we see such a discrepancy in behavior there is always an explanation that makes sense.  We just have to look for it.  This woman learned, when growing up, that men and children were more important then women.  That is how her mother and all the other female role models lead their lives.  They were also stay at home moms and their thinking reflected the current thinking of that time. . Carol copied this model and picked a husband who had been raised in a home where men were more important than women.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Carol no longer wanted to live like that.  At home she felt lonely, disregarded, demeaned and angry while at work she loved the feeling of  being competent and being respected.  She had to learn to make some changes:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;1. Start seeing herself as being equal to her husband&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;That required an internal shift in her thinking.  She had to start catching herself whenever she responded in a "I am less than you" fashion. &lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;2. Make "What Do I Want" the question to ask when she felt emotional discomfort.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;For someone who is so used to discounting own feelings and thoughts asking "What do I feel?" or "What do I want?" is a reminder that she does have feelings and opinions that are valid and need to be expressed.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;3. To concentrate on strengthening herself emotionally&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;By strengthening who she is as a person Carol is in a much better position to expect changes in her marriage.  After Carol starts valuing herself in personal relationships she will expect that from all the relationships that she is in.
