Birchbox February Unboxing - 2018

It's Birchbox time!

February's box is a dull peach tone with little X's and an O arrayed across the top in a pattern of white, orange, and black. I think this is one of the ugliest boxes yet and barely speaks to me of Valentine's Day. I'm a sucker for themes and really wish they would have been more creative with both the box and the array of samples. The Sample Choice options for the February Birchbox were a Balance Me Wonder Eye Cream, a MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream, and a OUAI Leave-In Conditioner. I chose the MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream this month; I've used a sample tube prior with great results mixing with a BB.

The first product in my February Birchbox is a MAC Cosmetics Strobe Cream (.2 oz) and was my sample choice this month. MAC is a tried and true brand that still manages to release cutting edge products and this strobe cream exemplifies that. It works great as a primer or as a mix in to add shimmer to a foundation or BB/CC.

Next up is a Smashbox Cosmetics Always On Gel Eye Liner in Fishnet (.03 oz). Smashbox is another brand that continues to release great products again and again, unfortunately I don't use black eyeliner so this will have to go to someone else.

The third item this month is a OUAI Leave-In Conditioner (.25 oz). OUAI is a decent haircare brand and this is an alright leave-in conditioner for my hair type (super curly perm) but not the best. Between Birchbox and Ipsy, I have gotten about 4 of these in the past year.

On to my next sample, the Love Beauty and Planet Smooth and Serene Argan Oil & Lavender Shampoo (3 oz). This appears to be a fairly new brand. I'm not going to use this but it smells AMAZING! I guess I should be happy that Birchbox send such generous shampoo and conditioner samples, but I don't use them.

And to accompany the shampoo, a Love Beauty and Planet Smooth and Serene Argan Oil & Lavender Conditioner (3 oz). Also smells AMAZING, also not going to use it on my permed tresses. I do love their packaging though!

The last product in my February 2018 Birchbox is a FOREO Day and Night Cleanser Set (.1 oz/each). I'm familiar with Forea as a manufacturer of electric toothbrushes and facial brushes, it only makes sense they would make cleansers to go with their skincare product. Too bad they are itty-bitty foil packets (I guess these are a "bonus" sample.

My February 2018 Birchbox contained the following 7 products with a total sample value of $28.83:

I gotta say I am really disappointed in this box both in total sample value and personal value. I HATE getting shampoo and conditioner; I have permed hair and I'm not using some unknown crap on it. I don't wear black eyeliner. The OUAI leave-In Conditioner I'll use, but it's not great and I've gotten it so many times already. The Foreo at least fits my profile but little foil packets that don't reseal? Are you fucking kidding me? There's no way I'm going to use these a second time so it's basically trash. The only sample worth a damn here is the strobe cream that I picked as my sample choice. Oh well, looking forward to a better box next month!

ipsy Glam Bag February Unboxing - 2018

It’s ipsy Glam Bag time!

February's bag design is romantic I suppose, a dusty rose color trimmed with black lace, I'm not a huge fan but I do like that it's simple. It would be way cooler if the zipper pull was something special!

The first item in my February Glam Bag is the Clinique Moisture Surge 72 Hour (.24 oz). I have had nothing but good experience with Clinique products in the past and am always in the need of moisturizers for my dry skin. Although I haven't used this specific cream before, I'm looking forward to it.

Next up we have a F.A.R.A.H Brushes Angled Contour Brush 30F ("full size" since it's a tool). I am not familiar with this brand and I certainly don't need anymore makeup brushes (I purchased a set recently and ipsy won't stop sending them) but it is really lovely but doesn't match the color scheme I have currently.

My third product this month is a SAND & SKY Brilliant Skin Pink Clay Mask (.5 oz). Here's another brand this month I haven't heard of. Looking at their website shows they only make this one product and it's damn expensive for a clay mask at $25/oz but then again I don't purchase clay masks so am definitely not the best judge of value.

On to a Beaute Basics Eyeshadow in Sweet Taffy (.14 oz), another full size! This color is a bright, sparkly, peachy-pink that looks like it would be awesome for summer but I don't see myself wearing it for a few more months. I've gotten a few of this company's products before and I haven't been a big fan so hopefully this works out better for me (I also REALLY hate their name).

The last sample this month is a Pink Pewter Lash But Not Least Dual Sided Mascara in Black (.6 oz), the third full size this month (I'm assuming it's full size, their are no weights listed on the website)! This is also the third brand I have never heard of but their website look makes the products seem extremely cheap and damn it I don't want to wear cheap mascara EVER.

Most of these were samples from subscription boxes or Sephora GWPs, I don't recall where I got the Proactiv, and I purchased the Aveda Toner and the Clean & Clear Spot Treatment.

The Best:

I absolutely adore the Paula's Choice BHA, it applies evenly and dries quickly with a cotton ball. The Mudmasky was surprisingly hydrating, physically exfoliates when washed off, and had a delicious earthy scent that reminded me of hiking in wet woods.

The Worst:

The Trestique Brow Pencil was just awful, it was like using a child's crayon. It is incapable of making a fine, feather like stroke and looks completely unnatural; I used it twice and am tossing.

Compare:

I emptied two Vitamin C serums last month; Sunday Riley CEO and Ole Henriksen Truth Serum. Although I and everyone around me enjoyed the aroma of the Sunday Riley serum, the Ole Henriksen worked better on my skin at brightening and hydrating. I was able to use twice a day with no dryness whereas the Sunday Riley was a tad too drying but damn did it smell AMAZING.

I thought the best mask here was the Leaders Insolution Brightening Recovery Mask and the worst Dermal Korea's Wine (only because it smells STRONGLY of wine and my face did too for about an hour after use).

Were getting new appliances for our entire kitchen and downstairs bathroom, which is also our laundry room!

It was about time; the oven door didn't close properly, the refrigerator door was falling off, the microwave didn't fit in the hutch, and I couldn't do more than two loads of laundry without the washes breaking down or the dryer door not latching.

Virtual Reality Headset by Novapolt

I just got my first Virtual Reality Headset (I know, I know I'm behind the times)!

I purchased a pair on Amazon.com manufactured by Novapolt, link here if you are interested in purchasing a pair: Novapolt Virtual Reality Headset. I have nothing to compare them to since I have never tried any virtual reality goggles before but this pair is a comfortable weight, fits well due to the adjustable bands, and didn't have any issue slipping off while wearing and playing.

The variety of games available was a little disappointing; there were hundreds of roller coaster and underwater adventure type games, a few horror shooter type games, but little else. I'm not sure exactly what I was hoping for, I guess I just figured there'd be more to to choose from on the Google Play basic search page for virtual reality games.

The headset does take some adjusting. You insert your phone in to the front of the goggles so you have to ensure the straps are on securely and then after starting you have to adjust the focal distance to your individual needs.

This eye gel visibly firms and brightens the under eye area while providing a non-greasy. long lasting moisture.

Packaging = 3.5

The packaging could be smaller but all of it is completely recyclable. The design and color scheme are not attractive. The cream dispenses via a pump top that pumps out too much at once.

Physical Qualities = 5

The gel is thick and clear with no noticeable odor. It absorbs well and leaves no residue.

Today I am reviewing Joyal Beauty Super Brightening Vitamin C Cream. I purchased this off of Amazon.com at a discount in exchange for my honest opinion of the product. I have never used any or heard of the Joyal products before but they look to be a fairly well established brand with six different collections of skincare products on their website.

Joyal Beauty Super Brightening Vitamin C Cream Ingredients:

Purified Water, Organic Aloe Vera Leaf Juice, Organic Sunflower Oil, Glyceryl Stearate, Vegetable Glycerin, Octyl Palmitate, Organic Coconut Oil, Cocoa Butter, Cetyl Alcohol, Potassium Stearate, Organic Beeswax, Organic Jojoba Oil, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate, MSM, Calophyllum Inophyllum, Borage Oil, Flaxseed Oil, Evening Primrose Oil, Oregon Grape, Rosehip Oil, Vitamin B5, Organic Arnica Montana, Lavender, Calendula, Chamomile, Grapeseed Oil, Macadamia Nut Oil, Sodium Carbomer, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin.

Unfortunately the Joyal Beauty website did not have a complete ingredients list for this product (they left out all the ingredients that weren't juices or oils) and the CosDNA Entry for it was wrong (unsurprisingly as the source of the information was the website). I made a new entry for it with the ingredients listed on the packaging: CosDNA Analysis of Joyal Beauty Super Brightening Vitamin C Cream. I used this cream for two weeks but stopped due to moderate breakouts. The packaging says this product is intended for "Instant Hydration, Intensive Protection, Diminish Wrinkles, Refine Skin Texture, Treat Skin Disorders" so those are the qualities I will measure it on although I'm not sure what types of skin disorders it may help treat.

Joyal Beauty Super Brightening Vitamin C Cream Individual Ratings (0 - 5)

Effectiveness = 2.5

This cream did noticeably brighten skin with regular use over the course of two weeks. It is intensely hydrating. I did not notice any difference on my wrinkles or skin texture however it did break me out.

Packaging = 4

The packaging could be smaller but all of it is completely recyclable. The design and color scheme are not attractive. The cream dispenses via a pump top that is easy to control.

Physical Qualities = 5

This cream is an opaque white and more like a thick lotion. It absorbs fast and leaves skin hydrated for hours after application.

Joyal Beauty Super Brightening Vitamin C Cream Total Rating = 3.5

As with all products, your mileage may vary (YMMV). My experience with this product was not great as it broke me out bad enough that it took a week to go away after I stopped using the cream, very likely due to the cocoa butter and jojoba oil. It’s ipsy Glam Bag time!

January's bag design is bold, sporty, and textured. I like it! The zipper pull is little shoelace ends and it is adorable.

The first item in my January Glam Bag is a Dirty Little Secrets Cosmetics Eyeshadow in Sangria (.05 oz) and is a full size! I was hoping that if I got one of these I'd get the other color they were sending out (Bikini, a shimmery copper) but now that I see this shade in person I'm glad I got it, it is a deep shimmery plum color that is much more gorg in person than I would have imagined and it's more of a dramatic color than I usually wear. Next we have the City Color Cosmetics Contour Palette (.249 oz). I haven't used much by this brand and I have yet to get in to contouring. This seems like the perfect beginners palette for me to begin with though. My third product this month is a Dermelect Microfacial Exfoliating Masque (.5 oz). I like what I've used of Dermelect so far and I LOOOOVE masks and exfoliants. This one has Vitamin C, Salicylic Acid, and Kaolin so it looks pretty legit.

On to the NYX Professional Makeup Lip Lingerie in Satin Ribbon (.13 oz) the second full-size product in the bag. The color is a pale ballerina beige that would probably be really unflattering on me. The other shade they sent out this month (Beauty Mark) would have worked better for me though I haven't had much success with this brand and just got a new set of Kat Von D liquid Lipsticks so I'm just going to toss this in the giveaway pile. My last sample this month is a Lue By Jean Seo Balance Hydrating and Calming Serum (.5 oz). I am unfamiliar with this brand. The website describes this as a shine and oil controlling, firming and toning, hydrating serum. It only has four ingredients (AWESOME) so doesn't look like it will be irritating.

It's Birchbox time!

The box design this month is an abstract, artistic motif with chunks of various pastel colors topped with a black squiggly line going from one side of the box, across the top, and down on to the other side. The Sample Choice options for the January Birchbox were an ARROW BOOST Color Enhancing Lip Balm in Berry Busy, a Real Chemistry Luminous 3-Minute Peel, and a VERB Hydrating Mask. I chose the VERB Hydrating Mask this month but was seriously considering the Arrow Lip Balm. I like the Real Chemistry Peel but felt like the other two options were better for me.

The first product in my January Birchbox is a The Beauty Crop Espresso Yourself Eyeshadow Palette in Love U So Latte (.11 oz). This is a lovely little trio with the shades Vanilla Latte (Highlight), French Roast (Blend and Shadow), Midnight Blend (Define & Line). I love these colors (the lighter two are shimmery) and can't wait to try it out with a complete eye look. Next up is a Bioderma Hydrabio Sérum (5 ml). I have yet to try any Bioderma products out though I have heard of the brand. This is a moisturizing serum that comes from an incredibly large line of Hydrabio products.

The third item this month is a

-->Smashbox Cosmetics Photo Finish Radiance Primer (.25 oz). I've gotten a few of these before and it is a decent product but I rarely use primers and still have one from my September ipsy I haven't used unfortunately (I'm trying really hard to get through samples or get rid of ones I know I'm not going to use or know I don't like). On to my next sample, the VERB Hydrating Mask (.67 oz) and my Sample Choice this month. I am completely unfamiliar with VERB but have a lot of thick, dense, curly hair that sucks up moisture so I picked this. The last product in my January 2018 Birchbox is an Arrow Boost Color Enhancing Lip Balm in Berry Busy (.14 oz) and is a full size! I am really stoked this is in my box since I chose the hair mask over it. I really wanted to try it but don't need a lip balm like a need hair masks. I love the few Arrow products I have tried and love their packaging/design motifs. Those two items ended up being the highest and lowest value items in my box this month respectively.

Alana Mitchell 4-in-1 Cleansing Pods Review

Today I am reviewing the Alana Mitchell 4-in-1 Cleansing Beauty Pods. I was sent a pod (purchasable here: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01MXVSL2Y) a few weeks ago complimentary in exchange for my honest opinion of the product. I have never heard of the Alana Mitchell products but by the looks of their website they make quite the large range of product lines as well as carry other brands. The ingredients are listed on the package and on the website but CosDNA did not have an entry so I made one here: CosDNA Analysis of Alana Mitchell 4-in-1 Cleansing Pods.

Alana Mitchell 4-in-1 Cleansing Pods Ingredients:

Aqua, Glycerine, Myristic Acid, Stearic Acid, Kaolin, Lauric Acid, Cocoamidopropyl Betain, Hydroxyethl Urea, Beeswax, Polyquaternium-51, Potassium Hydroxide, TEA-Cocoylglutamate, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Hydroxylpropyl Starch Phosphate, Phenoxyethanol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Disodium EDTA, Photosteryl/Ocytyldodecyl Lauroyl Glutamate, Tocopheryl Acetate, Perfume, Sodium Hyaluronate.

The Alana Mitchell 4-in-1 Cleansing Pods are a sponge, cleanser, exfoliant, and mask that claims to be gentle enough for all skin types. They come in two packs and the packaging says that each pod is good for between two and five uses. Each pod is individually packaged, with the packaging on each instructing you to wet the pod and squeeze to activate the foaming cleanser within. You can either use the sponge as a regular cleanser and rinse off immediately or you can leave the foam on for 10 minutes as a mask (it does contain kaolin) and then rinse. Although mine did become foamy on each occasion I didn't feel enough foam was created to reap the full benefits of using it as a wash-off mask.

My pod lasted three uses, though I did try to create a lot of foam on each use for leaving on as mask. I normally don't use cloths or sponges in my routine but I did like the size and texture of this sponge; along with the convenience of preloaded cleanser I could see these coming in pretty handy while traveling. After wetting and squeezing the sponge I massaged the cleansing pod in circular motions around my face and then left the remaining foam on for approximately ten minutes each use, three days in a row in the morning. I wouldn't want to personally reuse the sponge after washing off makeup so I only used it in the A.M.

Alana Mitchell 4-in-1 Cleansing Pods Individual Ratings (0 - 5)

Effectiveness = 4

These pods left my skin feeling clean and gently exfoliated. They did not leave my skin feeling dry or taut. They effectively cleansed my skin as toner afterwards did not pick up much residue or dirt. These did not work well as a mask for me, however I may have had better experience washing off immediately. This product may have caused me to lightly break out but am unable to determine with only the one pod (the CosDNA analysis shows four of the ingredients as prone to causing acne and another two as possible irritants.)

Packaging = 2.5

The packaging is small and does not waste materials or space. Only about half of the packaging is recyclable though and the pods needlessly come in a plastic bag that has the ingredients listed on it when the pod packaging itself could.

Physical Qualities = 5

Small, compact, white sponge that enlarges when wet the first time. White, foamy cleanser that feels silt-like and smooth on contact. Low, unidentifiable aroma.

Alana Mitchell 4-in-1 Cleansing Pods Total Rating = 3.875

As with all products, your mileage may vary (YMMV). My experience with this product was fairly good but I would rather use micellar water or a foaming cleanser with less ingredients that are likely to cause acne and irritation. I could see myself using a product like these though when traveling.
