Last night ‘The Rabbits’ at The Playhouse in Brisbane. Presented by Opera Australia and Barking Gecko Theatre Company, and based on the book by John Marsden and illustrated by Shaun Tan. It was first performed in the Heath Ledger Theatre WA in February 2015. With a libretto by Lally Katz expanded considerably from the original 250 words, the piece was written and sung spectacularly by the beautiful and seven months pregnant Kate Miller-Heidke (what a voice) and supported by an array of wonderful indigenous and opera singers and musicians of huge talent. They are all the original cast which shows in the commitment and brilliance of their performances. The evening was a winner from the first haunting sounds of the bush echoing from the large mound of a tree/nest with the striking Kate emerging out of the top to its ending that fills us with questions whose answers are not comfortable. It is a fun story, it is an entertaining story, it is a tragic story as the indigenous Marsupials are invaded by the destructive Rabbits. Some sections leave the performers in tears and all scenes leave the audience spellbound and sitting on the edge of their seats, while being swept up in the glorious music that so echoes the sounds of Australia.

My first comment really must be about the surprise I got when I saw Robert Mitchell was in the cast. I had known Robert for more than three and possibly almost four decades. Now recently retired as a full time member of Opera Australia (their longest serving member) he was asked to take on the role of The Captain which also disturbingly comes with the heaviest 14Kg costume with a headpiece one can only imagine how difficult it must be to balance. With that extensive experience it was great to hear what others were learning from performing with him.

A remarkable mix of beautiful music both operatic and pop in nature, stunningly written by Kate Miller-Heidke and supervised/orchestrated by the awesome Iain Grandage who’s music has popped up repeatedly in my theatre going in the last twelve months. Such an output and always remarkable. Replacing Iain as Musical Director was the equally impressive Isaac Hayward whom I have seen orchestrating and being musical director for ‘Ladies in Black’, musical director on stage for ‘Secret River” and again on stage last night. As a musician he creates an amazing presence on stage. The audience love him.

It has to be said the Kate Miller-Heidke is another amazing graduate of The Queensland Conservatorium, Lisa Maza is another Brisbane/Queensland actor and singer who is now based in Melbourne, Marcus Corowa also hails from Bowen as I recall so these at least gave a strong local content which is something very special to me.

After the show we were so lucky to have a chat and some Q&A from the stage. Wonderful insights as always and what was so gratifying was the questions that came from some of the children in the audience. These are kids that are already gripped by the seeds of a passion for music and theatre. Just awesome! Yes it was meant to be an opera for children, but it turned out to be so much more and with the winning of four Helpmann Awards it is becoming entrenched in the cannon of new Australian Works that are adored across the spectrum from young to old.

We soon found ourselves across the road at an excessively noisy, but fun bar again as QPAC continues to not provide a welcoming atmosphere post show. Everything is closed and the lights go out. Anyway, Michelle Boyd, Thomas Davis and I met up with some of the cast and musicians Andrew and Kier. I had a fabulous time catching up with the lovely and dear Robert Mitchell, meeting the wonderful Lisa Maza and discussing so many friends we actually have in common and finally getting to meet the quite incredible Isaac Hayward whom I had wanted to meet and congratulate since the first briefing for Ladies in Black last year.

Last night a double bill of early Pinter by the emerging new theatre group Now Look Here. Directed by inspired Kate Wild who did a fabulous job on The Seagull last year and produced by the so charming and lovely Pip Boyce this evening had some amazing acting. The big talkers were Kerith Atkinson and Daniel Murphy with some outstanding physical acting from Zac Boulton. In this intimate and up close theatre at Metro Arts in the city I sat quite mesmerized in really comfortable chairs (what a unusual joy) and got drawn into the picture of upper middle class neurotic attempts at relieving the banality or stagnation of married life.

The first play 'The Lover' was a hilarious and pointed exploration of fantasy and role playing, dissatisfaction, sexual frustration all attempting to add spice but lacking security. The humour reminded me of some Noel Coward and laden with what I saw as gay English wit, surprisingly cool acceptance but simmering undertones.

The second play 'A Slight Ache' took a less humourous and at times agonising look at the search for something more, the boredom of presumed status and the fear of the unknown. Daniel Murphy had huge monologues that must have been fearful to master, but his performance was astounding. Similar to me to the demands put on Carol Burns last year by Samuel Beckett. Not just in the difficulty, but in the irrational and banal cloak that hides a thought provoking and internalising provocation. His obsession with the Match Seller as he peered out and then tried to understand was quite psychotic. Kerith Atkinson as his wife expressed her frustration with rousings of lust towards the visitor and an escape from her prison.

Then we have Zachary Boulton as the enigmatic silent and dominating Matchseller. I don't wish to spoil anything but you see nothing but his eyes and they are penetrating, sad, reflective sometimes and oblivious on others. His stance with bent knees and frail bowed posture was enough to almost reduce me to tears at one stage. I talked to him and others later about his 'Thing'. Zac can shake and tremble like no one I have seen. I saw that last year in Sven Swenson's Beautiful Souls. Keep it Zac like Glenda Jackson's rocking which I have seen on stage and in several films. He assures me he has other talents which is so true. Of course Michelle Boyd and I got to meet and chat with everyone as well as Rosemary Walker who was there and Colin Smith. I at last got a photo with Colin having missed out last year when I met him after his star turn in 'The Odd Couple'

Amazing acting, wonderful lights, comfy seats and writing to be immersed in. It is affordable and we must encourage the growth of a new company like Now Look .Here. Experience the brilliant acting and cheer on fabulousness that is Brisbane/Queensland theatre.

Shout from the rooftops at you friends, neighbours, family, politicians that there is more to life than American Television, Reality Shows, Grand Finals. Hollywood. Go and watch a real person in front of you in a one off shared experience of story telling, thought exploration, entertainment, music, seduction, etc etc.

The Matilda Awards

Ok I had a just fabulous night watching applauding so much talent in one room. I have been going to The Gardens Theatre at QUT for almost 4 decades and there has always been exceptional talent on that stage. Last night I could not lose because I had seen most of the productions nominated and have also met most of the individuals up for a gong. I want to start at the end when the single Gold Matilda Award was given posthumously to the great and Awesome Carol Burns who left us recently. It prompted a standing ovation from a room full of people who had been inspired by, mentored by or been in awe of her great talent that laid the foundations for mush of what is now happening in our fair city. There was the Mayor, a State government Minister some Councillors and a room filled to capacity with artists from on and off stage.

Starting with our hosts the simply gorgeous Barbra Windsor-Woo (Leigh Alexander Buchanan) and Lenny (Carita Farrer Spencer) who joked, danced and sang their way throughout the evening. After Swen Swenson was entered into the hall of fame the first Award for Best Musical or Cabaret was given to the fabulous Dash Kruck. This immediately sent me into shock as Dash had asked me over the weekend that in the unlikely chance that he won anything would I accept on his behalf. So i had no time to adjust and up I popped, I think people clapped but being the wrong side of the footlights I am not sure. Afterwards everyone kept saying I did a great job and it was a fabulous speech. I kept insisting the Dash Wrote it. You will see by the photos that I would not let it out of my sight so it would not go astray.

I met and shared hugs generally with so many nominees/winners who are also friends like Kimberley Hodgson, Georgina Hopson, Jason Glenwright, Sam Foster, Brian Lucas, Tama Matheson, Colin Smith, Libby Gemmell (Munro), Daniel Evans, and missed heaps of others. I also got to share the love with Dylan Shade Hoskins who was singing on stage with his brilliant fellow ACPA talents, Veronica Neave who is always stunning to see on and off stage, Sue Donnelly QTC who was great as always, Sam Strong the new Artistic Director was a delight for our first meeting and I am looking forward to his leadership and ideas. At the bar I had a great time with Steven David (Steven Rooke) who told me about his turn swapping with Dash and awards so we have a special photo of him grabbing Dash Kruck's Award. I was especially thrilled to meet two great Australian voices and entertainers Luke Kennedy and Naomi Price, Of course the lady who chairs such a brilliant unpaid organisation Rosemary Walker was beautiful on stage and off.

Once again Shane Pike, Zoe Tuffin and I discussed how to promote encourage and sustain theatre in Brisbane and the cost of venues. That is a topic that comes up over and over with everyone I speak to. The diminishing investment by Government is sending companies to the wall and actors into poverty. It is hard to have to pour coffee all day or some such job and then rehearse for months and be on stage at night. So many companies try to do work for the sheer love of it because the cost of venue hire usually puts them out of business. Actors can not work for nothing as box office no matter how good leaves little to pay anyone or ends up a complete loss. This includes many groups that are nominated as the best in the state. They try, the produce wonderful work, receive high critical acclaim but just can not mount another work because it ends up coming out of their own pocket. Many venues are owned by the Council, or the State, but I do not know the financial set up, but it must be tragically inadequate if it is a deterrent to theatrical innovation or even just mounting a show for the people of Brisvegas. There has to be input from Governments and what about a bit of Philanthropy that is taken for granted in other countries but not in the Australian psyche.

Back to the social evening. There were Tom Oliver just being proud and wonderful, Thomas Davis thrilled, Chris Kel Lett being awesome, I got a congrats from Kris Stewart, an always appreciated hug from Peter Crees, Margi Brown Ash was there and involved as always in discussions that just look important. I was first greeted by Troy Ollerenshaw at the door and by Troy Armstrong inside. I know I have forgotten who else I spoke to. I may edit as people come to mind. I was genuinely honoured to greet everyone there who nodded, shook my hand or gave me a hug. Theatre of all sorts is my social life, and my spiritual life. Tonight I head off to a chamber Opera with the Great Emma Matthews and Jeremy Kleeman. Tomorrow the Aust String Quartet, Thursday Little Revolution at QUT Loft with Tom Cossettini and Karl Stuifzand and Friday the stunning, dramatic The Secret River

Importantly there was my never daunted and gorgeous cousin Michelle Boyd balancing champagne in one hand and her phone in the other taking all these pictures of me with all those lovelies. My old friend David Bentley was in great form meeting and greeting fellow actors etc.

The Matildas are being reviewed and expanded and there will be an addition to the Committee with the departure of one of the founding members Alison Cotes who spoke without fear or favour. I am not qualified to comment on her parting words which certainly appeared to hit some spots.

It was a celebration of not all but a lot of what is good, an encouragement for our artists and a bloody great night.

Voyage to the Moon

Conservatorium Theatre

I am chuffed that I always seem to pick outstanding shows to go to. That is enough ego for now.

'Voyage To The Moon' presented by Victorian Opera, Musica Viva and also tagged under Opera Qld at the Conservatorium Theatre last night was an example of some sensational and thrilling singing and instrument playing. I had two main reasons for choosing this. One was that Emma Matthews was singing and I know her voice from live performance, CD's I own and Television. She is also a remarkable woman full of joy, compassion and life as well as the most exceptional voice. I was in the third row centre from where I could see her tongue work magically to bring forth such astonishing notes (including a top E), trills and brilliant display of coloratura magic, I could see the amazing involvement of every expression. You ain't heard nothing until you hear the power of a soprano in full flight full of fearsome rage. Her voice cut straight into my brain and bounced around in my head. I was in awe.

I was also there to once again see and hear one of our new and truly outstanding talents the young Bass Baritone Jeremy Kleeman. It is the third time I have seen him on stage in the last twelve months and he is getting more remarkable each time I hear him. I also listened to the Australian Singing Competition of which he was a finalist. Perhaps I watched it, not sure but I have images in my brain - could have been photos or Youtube. Anyway when Jeremy walked on stage he looked outstandingly beautiful in his magnificent black and smoky gold cape. He credited the cape but the eyebrows and red lips didn't hurt. Then he opened his mouth and I was enveloped in a resonant rich and beautiful sound of such musicality. I was quite stunned. Is he getting better and better or was it just the perfect repertoire. I had to say all those things when I briefly saw him after the performance.

There was the rich tones of Mezzo (Sally-Anne) Sally Russell, the fine leadership from the harpsichord by Phoebe Briggs and quite inspiring Oboe playing by Emma Black I believe. It was a bit of an old curly one so I won't pretend I know what its is but it was exciting playing.

This whole Pasticcio opera was directed by Michael Gow and incorporated the music of Vivaldi, Handel, Gluck, Telemann, Hasse and others bound together in a story that took us to the moon and back. Fabulously entertaining and seamless. There should have been a standing ovation.

As this is touring throughout the country there is minimal set. The large shipping trunks they use to take it from city to city also makes the set, Instrument cases become props, music stands become a chariot to take them to the blow up moon which is lit from the inside by nifty WiFi lighting. I have always said I don't always need a million dollar set. Theatre is about the performance and imagination of the designers can create a genuine world of wonder on a shoestring. Not always of course but there is room for all and I love the spectacle of a huge Les Mis at QPAC as well as a student production at the Bourke St. Con. Talent is what counts.

I knew no one there last night except I ran into Sam Strong from QTC in the foyer. I had only met Sam the previous evening at the Matildas.

I wish that certain theatre events had more of those trendy young things in the audience. Why does not the boy in his expensive clothes take his equally model looking girlfriend out to the theatre. ie a play or some classical music. Not just a touring musical. What about the punk couple or group of friends turn up. I am not being elitist, but the age of most of the audience even made me feel old which I certainly am. Thank god they or we still go. For theatre to prosper it must become a thing to do. Apart from the occasional student in thongs there is a huge age gap in the audience. I love to see people dress for an outing, but I am equally inspired when I see someone in shorts and sneakers. They are all costumes so vary them. At least everyone can go, mix and be equally inspired.

Conservatorium Theatre

It was so gratifying to see what looked like an almost full house and heaps of young people. Several looked like students which is encouraging and their enthusiasm is infectious for both audience and obviously the artists. As always it was such a varied programme and their promotion of Australian works and commissions is fantastic.

We started with one of Beethoven's early Quartets (op 18 no 6) which was so full of inventive surprises that would excite any modern composer. For me there were new sounds, complex about turns and all sorts of ideas that I do not have the musical knowledge to explain.

Then we had a commissioned work by Matthew Hindson String Quartet number 4 which is on its world premier tour. Guest percussionist Claire Edwards featured in this amazing work. It opened with a wildly exciting, loud and thrilling passionate piece with 'sorceress of percussion' Claire on on a xylophone with the string players in energetic combination. The second part was pure fairytale from the first three bell like notes through the most loving of performance that showed how Hindson had been inspired by the recent birth of his daughter. The first thing to stick in my mind was Peter Pan for same reason. The John Adams selection from his 'Alleged Dances' and some incredibly inventive use of Claire's tupperware and heart shaped cake tins being beaten with sticks was a sensational show of talent, but a little too mid western Republican sounding for me.

Lastly was the absolute perfection of Robert Schumann Quartet op41 no 1. My god the sound of those very expensive and treasured instruments in the magic hands of new members and Queenslanders Dale Barltrop first violin, Francesca Hiew second Violin, fellow Queenslander Stephen King on Viola and Sharon Draper on Cello, is astounding rich and one of the pleasures of life. The music was ravishing and the pure perfectly rounded notes were astonishing. Sharon's cello seemed to reach new depths of the range, powerful and emotional and Dale's violin had a golden sound (none of that Paganini sharpness here.) It was also strange that the second movement instantly made me think again of Peter Pan swooping around Neverland. It got stuck in my thoughts. My friend could not get the Schumann codas out of his head.

Out in the foyer I was so pleased to meet Claire Edwards for a chat about of all things my Peter Pan images and a very quick handshake again with the wonderful and oh so brilliant Stephen King who I manage to see after each concert and I met and had a pretty wonderful chat with Dale Barltrop, welcomed him home to Brisbane but it is short lived. their punishing schedule has them in Adelaide Monday, Sydney Tuesday, Brisbane Wednesday, Melbourne Thursday the Canberra Sunday and Perth a week later. They always come out from back stage with luggage. There were whistles and some screaming. Fabulous night yet again. I next see them on the 6th July.

Little Revolution

The Loft QUT

The second year students at Queensland University of Technology - QUT in Alecky Blythe's verbatim play 'Little Revolution' created from taped voices in London in the riot of 2011. The play moves along so deftly as the actors take on many roles to shine light on the causes the reactions, the police, the manipulators and the unwilling figure heads and characters caught up in this snatch of reality. Highly dramatic, humourous and entertaining with thought and precision. When you recognise that these students are only at the start of their second year it is quite astounding the level of wonderful acting. They have skills that will take so many of them on a trajectory that hopefully finds work and satisfaction. The nuances, the varied accents, the postures and physical movements that varied with each character they took on was just so exciting to watch. All I could think of was the comparison I make with those who stand and deliver monotonously and the likes of Royal Shakespeare Company graduates who fill the stage with subtle and non stop activity even when still and silent. Little moments that add so much to a characterisation without distracting from the overall presentation.

I want to mention every single cast member as all were so brilliant to watch. In programme order they are Annabel Harte, Chloe Brisk, Jessica Potts, Bianca Saul, Ebony Nave, Brendan Perez-Compton, Alex Neal, Ryan Hodson, Karl Stuifzand whom I really did not recognise with those glasses and cardigan, Tom Cossettini whom I did recognise and rejoiced in his multiple personalities Bravo, Mitchell Bourke, Aleks Milinkovic, Martin Moolman, Tom Wilson

I will so be at as many productions throughout the year. I can add these to my Conservatorium shows as well as the regular things I go to. Should be another stand out year. Thank you ladies and gentlemen for a great night out at the theatre.

The Secret River

The hype was real The Secret River is an epic drama that shines an uncomfortable and blazing light on our history, told with such committed dedication, breathtaking acting on a grand stage with a phenomenal soundtrack that brought the sold out audience including Michelle Boyd and myself instantly to our feet with tears streaming down our cheeks while the players also smiled and cried in unison with the show of appreciation.

Brought to us by Queensland Theatre Company and Sydney Theatre Company with Griffith University Arts from the book by Kate Grenville and adapted by Andrew Bovell.

A huge cast of 19 amazing actors. You could not have hoped for a more professional and charismatic cast right from the innocent and unburdened child actors like Toby Challenor right up to the powerful and commanding elder of the family Kelton Pell whose land had been simply taken as if they did not exist, but whose wisdom could have saved us all from the ugliness of the massacre. Narrator and wife Ningali Lawford-Wolf held the whole story together in her mammoth role which kept her on stage for almost the entire evening which is a good two and a half hours on stage leaving out the interval.

Someone who did remain on stage from beginning to end was the phenomenal talented master of music Isaac Hayward. Recently we saw him here for Ladies in Black which he arranged and he is also part of the Rabbits which I go to see in two weeks for The Aust Opera. His work on the Piano and I mean every part of the piano inside underneath and anywhere reachable in the astounding music of Iain Grandage. Isaac also had a Bell a Cello interacted with the players. Not only he, but several other actors also joined in with Guitars and other instruments on occasions. It really was one of the most pleasing and inspiring and at times overwhelming musical contributions. It is not the first time Grandage has been played in a theatre I have been in in the last year or so. His music is popping up everywhere. I hope this is released. It is epic.

Finding someone of the caliber of Bruce Spence playing a dog amongst other roles was pretty awesome. Georgia Adamson as Sal Thornhill was so strong, riveting and almost desperate and her husband played by Nathanial Dean had all the complexity of a man who changes his station, climbs out of poverty in confusion and resolute conviction, but at a cost that is the shame of of this nation. There were so many stunning performances that it is impossible to go through them all. I wish I could but no one would read it all here. Sold out shows which saw a whole group of people hanging around the box office hoping for a cancellation. I did see empty seats so the theatre has to have some mechanism of allowing people in when someone does not turn up. Work it out. You are the professional organisations.

It is a big story and final scene of an angry, Trevor Jamieson whose family had been wiped out but his pride kept frustrated and internalised sitting with clenched fist singing sorrowfully beside a fire many years later is absolutely harrowing as the lights go down. This is when people really had to cry. Missed opportunities of cooperation, ignorance, criminals, language barriers, guns and greed as well as an arrogance all had their role. What could have been and what is still in need of resolution more than two hundred years after the events.

On a happy note I was delighted to see such a diverse audience, young, old, different faces, large groups. All standing. All honoured to be there. WOW!

"Can we choreograph a new form of protest?

Moving bodies take over a familiar urban space in this new work exploring what it means to put yourself on the line for something you believe in. Liesel Zink’s The Stance is a site specific dance and sound work investigating the choreography of bodies in protest. Created, rehearsed and performed in public space, it draws from the history of protest at the site in which it is presented and responds to recent acts of worldwide collective action.

Nine dancers perform to a live, original sound composition transmitted through wireless headphones. This intimate viewing experience is designed to prompt audiences and passers-by to consider the politics of mass movement and the ownership and control of what is considered public property."

This was part of the Australian Performing Arts Market 2016

and a repeat of a 9 hour performance in King George Square last year.

Among the performers was Gabriel Comerford. I was not there for the entire dance, but sitting on the artificial grass with headphones pumping music into my brain amongst people coming and going and relaxing while they performed was hard on my back, but good for the soul.

I then popped into the Playhouse for a play briefing with the cast of the outstanding and important 'Secret River' which opens soon. Wonderful listening to the actors discuss cultural input, the roles and the work on language and the importance of this story.

Penny Arcade "Longing Last Longer' at the World Theatre Festival last night at the Brisbane Powerhouse. Who would have thought the 'WTF' meant that. What a revelation, what a script and what an insight, chastisement and kick in the butt. Magnificent show full of humour, intelligence and reality. Penny Arcade instantly feels like a new friend a confidant and a wise elder who refuses to move out of the wonderment of youthful exploration of life. Cast away the presumptions, the arrogance and the entrenched ideas and live for now and what comes next. A true creative looking to be real at all times. It is just one of her shows and hopefully she will be invited back with as she says any of her other 10 performances. Brisbane needs to chat with her again. We could always try and adopt her into our world. What great adventures and lessons we would learn. Mix her into the cultural scene here and watch the blossoms grow. She would frighten shit out of the establishment, but that is how art survives and flourishes.

Funny as it sounds we have quite a few dear friends in common. She in reality and me via long time virtual relationships. We chatted about the gorgeous and remarkable David Hoyle from Manchester whom I adore and the most creative and original artist I know on the planet Gio BlackPeter from New York. It was lovely to meet someone who knows and works with Gio and agrees so wholeheartedly what nice, creative and amazing soul he is. I have loved Gio and his work in performance, painting, dance, music, acting etc for several years now. We talked of another legend Mink Stole and the work they made together and I thought they could form the basis of another festival idea here in Brisbane. Get the underground unearthed for us.

Sitting behind Michelle Boyd Phil and I were Shane Pike and Zoe Tuffin. Shane was having far too good a time and laughed out loud throughout, I saw Margi Brown Ash who had just managed to see three shows in one night. No wonder she is so knowledgeable and brilliant. Kris Stewart and Lizzie Moore were there at a different show so I managed to mention Mink Stole would be another wonderful guest one day. It was a surprise to run into Shi Shi Law there. I wonderful first time meeting. As usual it was a fabulous night and it was my birthday. I met several new people who have been old friends of Penny, drank perhaps one too many red wines and left around midnight to not get to bed until after two am. (sobering up time)

Penny Arcade is in Australia until April so hot foot it along to this amazing award winning show. You need it.

The whole of Melt was so enjoyable. Adam Gardnir put together a busy 11 days that I managed to fit in several shows and some exhibitions at the Powerhouse as well as a couple of visits to QPAC at the same time. The festival involved participation of about 25 friends and I chatted to heaps more who were there to watch, support and enjoy the feast. I made several new friends, drank more than a few Red wines, got heaps of photos, hugs and memories.

Melt has got off to a bang up start. Last night the Brisbane Powerhouse was full of people. I was there with a good friend Sante to see the quite brilliant and beautiful gender fluid (borrowed phrase) performance of Dangerous Liaisons presented by Little Ones Theatre.

Christopher Hampton's 1985 play Les liaisons dangereuses, is a theatrical adaptation of the 18th-century French novel Les Liaisons dangereuses by Pierre Choderlos de Laclos. Full of bawdy innuendo, seduction, ammorality and stunning acting. Pants roles were so well performed, singing was both fun and wonderful. The only jarring note I heard was one Rap sounding overplay music. Probably not Rap but I do not understand these transitory sub genres. There was so much laughter but I could feel people holding back at times because this is a big dialogue piece. Rapid fire words and action and no one wanted to miss one succulent moment. A treacherous feat to work with but a thrill to see the skill and the wonderful characters. Closes on the 5th so hurry.

"Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders from Mars"

Third night at the Melt Festival and Michelle Boyd (took photos of me sucking up),Phil, Sante and I went to a big concert of some of Brisbane's best musos playing the entire Ziggy Stardust album and then heaps more of the greatly loved genius David Bowie, This was planned a long time before his surprise departure from this planet and had to be rescheduled from one performance to three which immediately sold out. The enormous band was thrilling, tight and displayed sensational playing Violins, cello, drums, percussion, keyboards, a grand Mouth Organ, electric and acoustic guitars, horns. Just a beautiful and rocking sound from the best of the best. Then there were the vast array of singers who bought individuality to each Bowie Masterpiece. Singers from different styles and backgrounds that created a broad musical palette of rousing interpretations.

Originality that came together as a whole and a standing ovation. There were some fans who just had to leave their seats and dance in the aisle. Foremost for me was seeing the great Lucinda Shaw whom I adore on stage and love to see off stage as well. What a smart and brilliant singer. James Lees the musical director and percussionist for the event was a treat to finally meet after the show as was keyboards player, the extraordinary Parmis Rose. It wasn't until out in the carpark in the rain I finally got to chat to the amazing actor/performer/singer Sandro Colarelli who put on an enormously rock performance. All musicians and singers were outstanding. Outside I bumped into drummer the lovely Fionn Ellwood who was working off stage last night.

While there for the third night I also caught up with the leading theatre woman Margi Brown Ash, radio and eurovision rep Blair Martin and The Naked Magicians' Christopher Wayne (dressed for this show) who had come off stage after their last performance of Gaybies in another theatre there. I also managed to chat to the other half of The Naked Magicians Mike Tyler who turned out to be a friend of my cousins and family. I was thrilled to once again see the adorable Joel Devereux and we chatted and posed with his portrait of Joe Simons on the walls there. There is also a painting of Joel entered in the same portrait competition. It is all voted on but I noticed the Premiere of Queensland has been there today judging the portraits. I drank several reds and a beer, had a short chat again with Barbara Lowing waved at lovely ALP candidate 'Patrick O'Neill, spoke to dancer Joe Simons and Melt festival director Adam Gardnir yet again, met an arty punk guy I saw on a bus this week and had a thoroughly great time in the place I love the best - a theatre.

"APPALLING BEHAVIOUR"

The Turbine Studio at The BRISBANE POWERHOUSE is a remarkable intimate venue with gorgeous old brick walls and an arch or two. Just the venue for a very bohemian performance piece. It has the perfect atmosphere and I felt a new vibe. Thomas Markiewicz was quite spellbinding in this theatre piece that is one huge poetic monologue. Full of shades of the characters he tells of from being a homeless bisexual existing in love and loneliness on the fringes and the streets of Paris. The longings, the hope, the disappointment, the adventures and most of all the need for love. It is one hell of a script by Stephen House who I met. He wrote from his own times in Paris and as an actor he has also performed it himself all over the country over a 100 times. The reinterpretation as a cross dresser is new to this production and was carried off so brilliantly by the somewhat younger Tom Markiewicz. On or more precisely to the side of the space was musician Silvan Rus adding beautiful, emotional and pointed guitar accompaniment to the performance. I sat just in front of Zoe Tuffin who was producer and Shane Pike who was the director. This couple have created Wax Lyrical Productions which got off to an amazing start with a sensational 'Carrie' a few weeks ago and now another startlingly good production of 'Appalling Behaviour'

Part of the Adam Gardnir's Melt Festival (yes I saw him again) the building was again full of friends out being entertained and supporting great theatre. I have friends in different rooms/theatres. Dan Venz was with us in the Turbine Studio and Tom Oliver, Kimberly Hodgson and Chris Kel Lett were there watching Joe Simons who I see on Saturday night. Before and after the shows I had such great times with all the above, drank red wine, took photos, discussed at length what can be done to see how performers can actually earn some money, increasing audiences, pride in the sensational talent we have, staying here to build, approaching politicians to grill them on their support for the arts, the shortage of venues and the high cost of hiring a venue which ends up leaving those who give up their time and energy to learn a role, rehearse and then come out every night and some afternoons to provide it to the people in this and other cities for nothing or next to nothing. There are three levels of government and all have a responsibility towards the arts and in Brisbane they seem to own most of the venues. Unfortunately the entertainment in them is more often than not a gift of charity to us on behalf of the artists. Constantly importing expensive shows does little for supporting local talent. So many succumb and decide to move to get the roles. We train them so we should bloody well try and keep them and pay them with respect and money.

Well it is almost Melted, the carnival will be over today and I had a wonderful time. My final show last night was Joe Simons joyous celebration of first times, the excitement, generally, of the first time for everything before it becomes ordinary . 'First Things First' Joe is an actor, a sublime and agile dancer, he speaks with physical theatre, he can tell a tale, he can engage every member of the audience and address them by name he is charming, he is funny and he is just sexily splendid to watch as he dances, prances, shakes, leaps and twists all over the stage. Sadly it is now over so you missed it if you did not go this week. I ran into the charming Joe every night I was there but missed my usual photo op. Next time.

My second fabulous night at Adam Gardnir's Melt Festival was Gaybies directed by Powerhouse Artistic Director Kris Stewart associate director Joe Simons (bumped into again), lit by Jason Glenwright. Last night along with my cousin Michelle Boyd ( who always takes the fun pictures) and her husband Phil I saw a huge cross section of Brisbanites coming together to celebrate diversity through the exact words of children of that broad sexual identity spectrum of what we call family. The off spring of parents of different combinations - two fathers, two mothers, four parents, transgender parents, the clubbers, the mechanics etc. etc

There was so much laughter as actors, singers, politicians, journalists, business people lent their honest commitment to reading the stories, riding tricycles, drawing families in crayon exposing personal revelations. There was also the occasional sadness of more harrowing stories that Pat Patrick O'Neill, ALP Candidate for the Federal Seat of Brisbane brought so much pathos to. Overall the evening was very upbeat, positive and a celebration of just how much we are all alike. Margi Brown Ash was the cutest kid on the block and her tricycle was a hoot. Barbara Lowing is so infectious that laughter and sympathy just flows to and from her characters. These two women are such great adornments to Brisbane's stages. It was also so funny how much I identified with so many passages that 4ZZZ's and Eurovision's Blair Martin read. It was if he had found my diary (I don't actually have one). After the show with red wine in hand I met up with several other cast members like journalist Xanthe Coward, Brisbane Festival director David Berthold, Actor and such fun character and singer Kurt Phelan. I had a very short chat with Gordon Hamilton who is the artistic director of Australian Voices about the up coming Mozart Requiem with the QSO and fabulous Tenor come home for this Kang Wang. I got to hang out a bit with the beautiful voiced Lizzie Moore whom I feel I may have referred to as Libby to someone but blame the red wine and the fact we only met on Wednesday. I did not see the brilliant Emily Gilhome after the show to compliment her on the performance the guitar and everything she does. Pity I missed seeing Christopher Wayne as he was off doing some Ghostly things in Melbourne. I will be back tonight for another show so perhaps I will bump into him at the bar. It was so nice to have the play interspersed with some wonderful songs and piano and Brad Rush from the Gold Coast Arts Centre was one of the ivory tinklers.

Such a lovely play, an evening of joyous warm and fuzzies, hysterically funny and also touching. Politics, love, acceptance and entertaining. It finishes tonight so support your festival and rush along. I saw and spoke to several others thespians who were at the show like Tom Oliver from Pirates of Penzance and Sensational Jack in Into The Woods and soon to drop an EP, Kimberley Hodgson who you will remember as the spectacular Little Red in Into The Woods and once again Gabriel Comerford who has been part of so much creativity here.

What happens when you have a city overflowing with talent, and acting and music schools adding more great talent to the mix with glorious regularity. Well in the best tradition of the young Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney you shout "Lets put on a show" (you have to go back to black and white films if you are too young to recognise). Well this is what has happened again in Brisbane with the creation of Wax Lyrical Productions and director Zoe Tuffin and producers Shane Pike and Joe Kelly's show 'Carrie The Musical' which I saw last night at the BRISBANE POWERHOUSE with Michelle Boyd and Phil . Sold out yet again and another standing ovation for some powerhouse singing, agonisingly good acting and a great production.

There is a musical director/keyboards in town who has such amazing talent and I have seen or heard so many times in the last year that in the not too distant future Dominic Woodhead will be referred to as Maestro. Endurance, powerful playing and tight adaptable supplement to the high caliber singers is his forte from my observations. This appreciation is backed up by everyone I speak to. Several concerts and performances at the Conservatorium and Heathers The Musical as well.

Sophie Perkins evolution as Carrie was quite spellbinding and her voice had all the fear, confusion and explosiveness of this victim of bullying and it was she that led to the standing ovation last night by a super enthusiastic audience. As her wildly religious mother Jacqui Devereux was a sensation. A voice so powerful and warmly melodic brought cheers several times. All the singers had their individual moments to give a glimpse of the amazing talent I have enjoyed over and over since the beginning of 2015. I caught up with the astoundingly beautiful Georgina Hopson after her brilliant and sympathetic performance which justified her being the only one left standing. Such a brilliant voice I have grown to love so much since Pirates and Into The Woods last year, well actually since the first moment I heard her. Oliver Samson has been a favourite since I was convinced he sang just for me at a Con concert last year and it was wonderful to catch up before he heads off to Japan in a week for a 14 month contract performing.

Dan Venz was there as choreographer and it was exactly a year since I saw him on stage for the first of several times. Non stop workers and contributing in so may ways to theatrical life in Brisbane. At last I caught up with the wonderful Thomas Davis and what a charming performer even though he was a particular bastard in the show. I had only heard him sing on Youtube before and it was sensational as he has been so busy with tours for shake & stir theatre co and Opera Queensland. Stephen Hirst has skipped from prince last year to teacher, but thankfully after being wiped out by Carrie's telekinesis he was well enough to shake hands after the show.

Once again Jason Glenwright brought his considerable magic to lighting the show and this intimate venue seemed to grow in size last night as they made use of every available space including the aisles, the back stage and occasionally where my feet were. The first person I spoke to after the show was Rune Nydal whom I also first met a year ago at the same theatre, singer dancer and lovely guy and so great to catch up yet again. I think I missed chatting to Tim Carroll, Jessica Kate Ryan and Alex Woodward but I was happily having a couple of beers so anything was possible. Tim and Alex were particularly memorable last year in 'Blood Brothers' which was a stunning piece of drama as well as music. At the bar I also ran into Joel Devereux who did the photos and programme cover, Lewis Jones the wonderful director/producer who has worked with many of these artists and once again Anthony De Marco whom I have yet to see on stage as he is studying at UQ and not on my bus route. And I had a brief chat with Michael Mandalios who was enjoying the show and 'being polite?' Looking forward to seeing him and others as they embark on year three at the Con.

Front row and centre for Heathers The Musical last night had lots of advantages. I didn't miss a thing. I even got terrorised by an angry Heather (Libby Asciak in red below) when she came off stage, sat beside me and tried to stop me applauding one of the other characters with a stare and grabbing my hand. That was fun.

Its a quite lengthy evening and never stops or has a dull moment no doubt thanks to the direction of Trevor Ashley and the full on talent on stage. Mostly fairly recent graduates of several schools throughout the country including WAAPA which has been popping up in my programmes so often lately and of course NIDA and also Dominic Woodhead from Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University. I met and congratulated Dominic after the show and thanked him for his assistant keyboards for the fabulous Bev Kennedy or Miss Bev as they call her. They have endurance to be able to create such a huge orchestral backing for the full on show. As promised I met up with Bev after and got or gave a hug and a kiss while we chatted. She is quite a sensational star of musical direction and accompaniment and a beautiful and kind woman.

On stage were the astoundingly good looking Stephen Madsen who comes not only with great voice and charismatic acting, but a leading man 'cleft chin'; Stephen McDowell whom I had the great pleasure of meeting at the stage door afterwards and had such a nice chat and congratulations on his Andy Warhol like wig in one scene:

Jakob Ambrose had a ball with his fellow jock/father/ lover and victim Vincent Hooper as they had so many costume changes which often involved white undies slightly covering their fabulous, been to the gym, bodies, Leigh Sleightholme went from rocker to father with some ease.

Then we have the girls, the Heathers and the Veronica of Jaz Flowers. Huge voiced Jaz Flowers is a force to be reckoned with, a personality to follow and I almost said hello outside as she was standing beside me, but I am still not doing well on the going out alone stakes: Kirby Burgess as lead Heather is everything a school queen bitch should be, she can command with a glance lead with a raised eyebrow and command without challenge, but then she becomes a ghost. She was outstanding. Also on stage were Erin Clare, Libby Asciak mentioned above, Lauren McKenna who was a particular favourite with her two opposite characters and great voice, Michelle Barr, Rebecca Hetherington, all drawn with individual conviction. It is hard to praise one person over another because so much depends on the role they are lucky enough to get. Each part makes the wonderful whole.

People left with smiles on their face, singing songs they may have heard for the first time and thanking everyone for being there. I was so pleased to run into Benjamin Hambley another graduate from the con, congratulate him on the last performance I saw of his and met his friend another past student just returned from OS. It is great to watch how close all the grads are as they support each other in everything they do. They are so close. I also spoke to director Lewis Jones who was equally unfamiliar with the piece. I loved it all,said a couple of hellos and then got my bus. I would go and see it. This is part of a national tour.

Roald Dahl's - 'George's Marvellous Medecine' opened last night at the Cremorne Theatre at QPAC This is the first family show I have seen by the brilliant shake & stir theatre co and what a joyous fun and sensational night of theatre it was. This is a family show which runs three times a day for 34 performances for the kids and their parents (all 12,000 ticketed) during the school holidays, but if you are an adult do not be afraid. Never have I imagined that such amazing theatre is served up for the young impressionable and hopefully theatre goers of the future. If only fare of this professionalism was presented when I was young. I still caught the bug at age 5 but shows like this will guarantee audiences into the distant future.

The huge and impressive set is a constant whirl of rotating brilliance, surprises and coordination thanks to the stage managers Janni and Nicole. Colour and movement non stop with the really truly magic lighting of Jason Glenwright synchronised to perfection with the absolutely perfect non stop sound design of Guy Webster. This all worked to the millisecond with the full on, no holds barred cast of Bryan Probets, Nicholas Skubij, Nelle Lee, Johnny Balbuziente and the surprisingly young Granny of Leon Cain.

Directing this hysterical mix of hyperactivity, poisonous goo, inflating nasty Grans farts and all things fun was Ross Balbuziente. I had the great pleasure of meeting the proud and helpful Balbuziente parents, actor Barbara Lowing along with playwright Katherine Lyall-Watson whose work Motherland I will be seeing in April, fabulous performer and costume designer Leigh Alexander Buchanan who is becoming one of my treasured friends I see so often at the theatre and I met up with director Michael Futcherr who will be directing one of Shake & Stir's exciting productions later this year. Also a hug from the special Rosemary Walker was so nice to have. It was my first time to be invited up to the rooftop reception area at QPAC for an opening night party and what a gorgeous venue and view. With a glass or two of red i wandered around shaking hands with everyone I could and had a ball.

The Cremorne is a lovely venue of 310 seats so if you can get a ticket I highly recommend you do. It is fun it is glorious to look at, it is a great time at the theatre and you will laugh and start your year with a smile on your face. Yes there are enough references that kept the adults laughing out loud from beginning to end.

Friday Night with Michelle Boyd and a joyous time out at the Powerhouse, foyer, front yard and Love Box. A return season of Daniel Evans' creation “I want To Know What Love Is’ drawn from the 812 submissions of the lovelorn, the passionate, the broken hearted and the dreamers of this city and beyond. Even I claim 6 words. Produced by The Good Room there is a change of venue from the original show at the Queensland Theatre Company, one change of actor from Carol Burns to Margi Brown Ash and some small changes from it’s last season just 15 months ago. Before the show I had the usual glass or two of red wine and some really lovely catching up with some brilliant artists who were there as well to see this or other shows at the Wonderland Festival. Lucinda Shaw , Fionn Ellwood, Gabriel Comerford, Ellen Elizabeth Bailey, Kristian Šantić and I met up for the first actual time with Lewis Jones who has directed shows at the Con I have seen this year and is also doing the show I see tonight.

After the show I got to hug the artists Daniel Evans, Tom Cossettini and Amy Ingram . And then ran into the boys from another show I go to see tonight.

The show is a blend of wildly frenetic outbursts, memories, hopes, bitterness, involved stories and single words that form part of an exploration of just what love is. Tom’s hair is a feature that you can see in the photos, he is sexy and charming and a charismatic scene stealer, Amy’s blunt and unabashed lines and delivery is a wild show of power and lust, anger and commitment, a comedian and a presence to be dealt with and Margi has the versatility of an amazing professional that had the audience reacting to every nuanced step she took. She had them, not to mention Tom, eating out of her hands. Caroline Dunphy brought connection to the goings on in this amazing split personalities ensemble.

The audience laughed and clapped, showed surprise and succumbed to recognition and familiarity. Love is many things to many people and many things to each single person. You could hear agreement whispered from the audience, the laughter of the absurdity of this madness and all pay tribute to how Daniel Evans has woven a performance with such spot on observation filtered and distilled from the hundreds of people who offered up their stories for display, dissection and sharing with their family of fellow theatre lovers.

350 light bulbs hanging from the enormous ceiling, tens or hundreds of thousands of petals showering down from all points on actors and audience alike, spot lights and a soundscape both new and familiar by Lawrence English. Yes Jason Glenwright was involved in bringing magical light and dark to the episodes. I would love to say you just have to go, but the last show is tonight and I do not know if there are ant tickets left, but as everyone has been raving about it I assume you have all heard so much about this already and have no doubt been.

More great fun at the Powerhouse Wonderland Festival last night with Michelle Boyd, Phil and David Bentley. The Five Fold Collective, namely Brisbanites David Trappes, Adam Strom and Ashleigh Pearce as well as Quebec-based Nate Armour and American Owen Winship. got all hot and bothered for an extraordinary performance of circus gymnastics, juggling and all things difficult. The audience did not stop cheering, clapping, wowing! and the night ended with a standing ovation. Humorous, sexy, campy at times with that great balance of springing on you an original slant to leaping through body rings while playing up how difficult it is and at the same time how easy it is for them. Tension in the great tradition of this sort of amaze me performance and with a charm so invigorating endearing, cute and i just have to say again - original. Did I mention they are all extremely gorgeous and spent most of the evening in their white undies with the occasional getting dressed without hands, upside down etc. You really should have heard the enthusiasm coming from the audience it was a hoot. Lewis Jones the wonderful director around town looked very pleased with himself last night and we have him to thank for yet another wonderful show.

It was back in June 2013 that I first met David Trappes in a spectacular show 'Salon' and now he is international. I was so pleased to run into them on both Friday Night and Saturday night.

A lot of female nudity and gymnastics. Just returning from South America and Cuba.Some great avant guard performance art pieces and loads of flesh that was popular with the audience however I was there to see Mama Alto

Above is Mama Alto or Benny Dimas who is a counter tenor of extraordinary talent. She specialises in the blues but can belt out amazing songs in a spine tingling voice of beauty and power. After the show while they were taking their bows she came off stage to give me a hug and a kiss. We have been fb friends for a few years and I was so looking forward to seeing her live one day. Just remarkable and a gorgeous person.

In addition to taking over the inside of Brisbane Powerhouse, the festival also spills into the outdoors with nightly Wonderland Food Markets by Jan Power and Bamboozled performance tents filled with a wide-ranging menu of bite-sized entertainment.

I ran into the fabulous Shivannah, Fez Faanana, who was doing shows with cocktails at The Little Palais amongst the tents and fabulous venues outside the Powerhouse on the lawns. Fez is the MC and one of the stars of the amazing show 'Briefs.' which you can see on a large poster on the Powerhouse wall from Last Year's festival

The Camerata of St. John's chamber orchestra went off like an explosion in the heavens last night when they presented 'Bright Stars Shon For Us', a tribute and tale of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. Written and acted by the profoundly talented Tama Matheson (Macbeth, The Odd Couple, Design For Living, Don Juan) this was an evening of musical, emotional and dramatic superlatives. Telling the musical and stressful journey of a man with an enormous and treasured genius and a life overwhelmed by personal confusion, fear, love and sorrow. We know the story and Tama exposed it all with so much warmth and respect without fear and he enveloped the audience in this tale that reduced many to tears at times. So brilliant and inspiring was the performance of his fellow actor the incredibly versatile Veronica Neave (Sex With Strangers, Brisbane, Macbeth) who played just about everyone in his life from family to the musical world both adoring and humiliating. She whipped from one reflected mood to another with dread and with humour, with concern and with passion.

Also on stage was the extremely handsome young dancer Aidan Daley from North Queensland and has been accepted into the pre professional year of training with The Sydney Dance Company. Already a wonderful dancer from QDSE he played desire and the various loves of Tchaikovsky. It was wonderful to see he and Tama dance together. Yes, Tama added some dance to his considerable talents that I know him for.

The orchestra was divine with the wonderful Brendan Joyce and others looking superb in their designed stage outfit. So many I spoke to made special mention of how wonderful they looked in the costume. Premiering was some wonderfully reimagined Swan Lake composed by the fabulous Iain Grandage. Also bringing something really special and haunting was when the Orava Quartet guys including cellist Karol Kowalik stepped out from the orchestra to perform very heart wrenching String Quartet.

I walked out with a hall full of people smiling after being completely blown away. So sad that it was the only performance here because so many said they would love to return. Be very sad if you were not there for an incredible evening of music and drama, beauty and emotion and followed by a big evening of some drinks, much amazed chatter, congratulations flowing and I got to kiss heaps of people. I saw so many friends I knew, met some new ones and it was a joyous evening thanks yet again to the truly creative talents of this city.

The stage looked absolutely stunning and the stars truly did shine thanks to the brilliance of Ben Hughes who can create visions splendid and atmosphere that positively glows.

Hello to Lee Freeman, Leigh Alexander Buchanan, Ian Thomson, Margi Brown Ash (whom I see in a play on Friday night) and others I got to chat to. Thank you and love you all. It was a great great evening.

What a brilliant time I had at the The Lisa Gasteen National Opera School 'Opera Gala'. Firstly I must pay tribute to the amazing singers who have been through the top level training which Lisa Gasteen has given to top singers who enrol in her intensive one on one care.

I have a few facebook friends that I have gathered this year after having experienced their fabulous voices in productions I have seen. I then with glass of red in hand got to meet, chat with and congratulate them all after the concert. Backed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra I was overjoyed to hear the absolutely awesome Jeremy Kleeman (THUMBS UP ABOVE and from Faramondo and Australian Singing Competition), Samuel Piper (from Coronation of Poppea and Hansel and Gretel), Samuel Thomas Holland (The Addams Family) and Cameron Taylor (Coronation of Poppea). I was impressed so much by their voices last time I heard each although Cameron has since changed from Tenor to Baritone. All are Baritones or Bass Baritones and Jeremy and Samuel Holland have returned here for this concert.

With 35 performers on stage including a wonderful chorus gathered from outside the school they were able to present some great and oh so famous scenes from Mozart's astonishing operas. Among the chorus was the wonderful Matthew Yates whom I had seen recently in Rent. Also from the Rent cast were the wonderful Michael Mandalios and Kieran Rodriguez earning some bucks by pouring me lots of wine.

It was a special moment when I caught up with Stuart Maunder Runs Opera NZ) who directed the evening. I had known Stuart around 35 years ago and one great memory was when he was a stage manager at Opera Australia and took us on stage of the Lucia set the afternoon before we were attending one of Joan Sutherland's stupendous performances. We sang the sextet badly but could claim we shared the same stage as Sutherland, just not at the same time.

Fortified by the wine I had drunk I managed something I had wanted to do for decades. I met Lisa Gasteen and had great chats about mainly my memories of seeing her in student productions at the conservatorium around 35 or more years ago and when I had bumped into her before and seen some spectacular productions like Force of Destiny, Don Carlo and many more. I kissed her hand and got some photos. Some were taken by the official photographer but I have to find out how to get copies. She and the photographer said all sorts of things and gave me names to contact but that left by brain as soon as I turned my head. Now the search begins. This is a blurry photo taken on my phone which I only bought two days ago and have no idea how to set up properly. I also ran into a few other fb friends and got home around midnight. There are other photos that were taken by the official photographer I hope to get hold of.

I am so pleased that some of these great singers told me about upcoming performances here in Brisbane which I will be at. Lovely to meet Samuel Piper's proud parents, A great interesting history professor with a love of the arts, a wonderful soprano Annika Hinrichs I have seen in Medea and Poppea.

As mentioned there was a function after the concert celebrating the 5th birthday of the school. You may never have been in a room where just about everyone from on stage and from the audience is a singer, except me and they sing 'Happy Birthday To Us' and led by one of the greatest singers in the world. It gave me tingles. That was a moment I will remember always.

Notes from the programme.

"On the Docks is the debut musical theatre work of Alexander Bayliss and Rex J Ablett. It tells the tale of a young girl, Rachel, who wants more than anything to travel to the UK but feels trapped due to the pressures from her family and her community. This is further exacerbated by the backdrop of an industrial dispute between her father, his union and Shipping company that he works for. Furthermore, an old flame and a new young stranger compete for Rachel's affections making her situation even more complicated.

The December season of On the Docks is the production's first public performance. However, there have been a number of workshops along the way to help refine the show. Thanks in a huge part to Griffith University's Queensland Conservatorium of Music the creative team now feel ready to show the musical to the world in a concert format."

Something special happened in Brisbane last night. The birth of a new musical 'ON THE DOCKS' composed by Rex J Ablett with lyrics by Alex Bayliss. It is sensational. Rex is another brilliant graduate from the Queensland Conservatorium - Musical Theatre and was accepted to do his Masters of Music Studies where he has been able to compose his first major musical. Alex has a bachelor and masters in Creative Writing and together they have created an outstanding work for musical theatre on a topic of high emotional and political impact from 1998 Australia.

There are so many great songs and some I can see as becoming concert favourites by various artists, Stirring ensemble/ chorus work, lyrics that are poignant, emotional, fun, witty and smart. This is a all encompassing great work already. With a touch of crowd funding it only took a couple of thousand dollars to put it on and hopefully the performers get a few bucks out of it. We must start paying our artists in Australia properly. I was pleased to see so many facebook friends in the large cast. Olly Oliver Samson once again allowed us to share in that smooth and beautiful voice as it flowed all over us. Luke Wallace gave us one of the big numbers as the union boss/dad and Josh R H Daveta revealed yet another side of his multi talented soul, cabaret artist, singer, comedian, dramatic actor and the list goes on for this acutely smart and charismatic performer. In the ensemble with various solo moments were the outstanding Matthew Semple, Michael Mandalios, Hayden Rodgers, Isaac Saunders, Simon Mason and Hayley Maybury. There was a some choreography but I can see flags and placards waving, big choreographed opportunities when it gets backing. The music is so varied and exceptional. I was constantly surprised by the inventiveness, the just wonderful music and this had a lot to do with the outstanding Musical Director Luke Volker on fearless piano. His lavish playing created a huge backdrop to the singers and he has been the soul of many a production I have seen this year. He is a star in his field. I have not mentioned the rest of the fairly large cast as I do not know them, but there were some outstanding talents that I had come across for the first time.

I do hope that The Queensland Theatre Company, Harvest Rain Theatre Company, and others start vying for this work to bring a fully staged and fully funded big production to the stage. It already is a major work and hit waiting exposure.

'Ladies in Black embodies two things we will be doing a lot more at QTC in the future. Firstly, it’s a production that combines the best Queensland talent with the best talent from all over Australia. Secondly, it creates a world class, world first theatrical experience right here in Queensland. ' Well here is your perfect chance Sam. Local story, composer, writer and we have the directors, actors and singers to make it happen.

"The Australian waterfront dispute of 1998 was a watershed event in Australian industrial relations history, in which the Patrick Corporation undertook an illegal restructuring of their operations for the purpose of increasing the productivity of their workforce. Based on the Novel 'The Women In Black'

'Ladies in Black' is a brand new premier musical created by The Queensland Theatre Company with playwright Carolyn Burns, Composer Tim Finn (yes, Tim of Split Enz (1984), Crowded House (1990 – 1991), Finn Brothers fame) and directed by Simon Phillips. Last night along with friends Michelle Boyd, Phil and Sante there was a great crowded house for the near end of the run before they ALL move to Melbourne to open the 2016 season down there. By the end I wanted to stand and cheer until the incredible charmer Bobby Fox quietened us down for a few words before we had a Q&A.

For those unfamiliar The Women in Black refer to the women who worked dressed in stylish black dresses in the big Departments Stores - Goode's in this case but drawn on parallels we all remember if we are old enough. I was unsure by certain elements at the beginning as I adjusted to their observations of Australia in the 50's which seemed a touch patronising, but this was soon swept away as the characters grew, the music continued and developed and the charm of the piece took over. It is a lot more than frivolous nostalgia as it delved into the patriarchal, somewhat racist Australia as it began to enter the real world after recovering from the war. Loss, loneliness, adjustment to change, the growing independence of women, the embracing of new culture and a whole lot of fun. It is wonderful to end an evening in triumph with everybody happy.

Music wise there were some smashing songs, some fun numbers like 'They are Bastards' and really fantastic arrangements by the inventive band led by Musical Director Isaac Hayward. He really impressed me. For me the appearance of the sensational Christen O'Leary (my sixth of her plays) as the brilliant Hungarian Magda was a huge highlight. God I would love to go to one of Magda's parties. She was real, she was fun she was a breath of fresh air to the somewhat stifled population of that time. Also a favourite was Naomi Price turning in yet another great performance with that wonderful voice as a true treasure. It is only a few weeks since I last saw her on stage when we did get a chance to give her a standing ovation. Then she was backed by the super star Luke Kennedy whom I happened to meet in the foyer last night. After following him for several years now it was such a delight to finally meet face to face as he was there with another friend Chris Kel Lett.

Cast and Creatives.

It was a pretty big cast and as they said what was originally meant to be a chamber musical took flight and became a big show that should have years of returns and travels. As one of the cast said afterwards it was great to sing and tell an Australian story in Australian idioms and not have to sing with an American accent at which point the audience cheered. I repeat the voices were impressive, the story relevant to today, the creativity a joyful celebration.

Good come to those who wait. After an unexplained 'delay' of around 25 minutes last night the curtain finally rose on a truly spectacular piece of musical theatre - Les Miserables. A multi million dollar production and it looked like it.

Universally the singing was thrilling. So many great voices, so much passion and god, so many costumes changed at lightning speed. The ensemble cast could exit in one direction and within moments would reappear somewhere else as a different character as the set also changed miraculously and flawlessly before your eyes. I saw one set and relevant costumes that lasted but a matter of seconds. This was like a well edited film. And while on the matter of production values there is one scene where Javert leaps to his death which is breathtaking and nothing short of the best live theatre magic I have ever witnessed and elicited a huge ovation by a spellbound audience. I won't give away the details. The joy of hearing such powerful voices amplified a touch too much for me and a touch too little for my friend was exciting. Subjective assessments like this are what make theatre personal, but all cried at places that affect them the most.

For me was the special thrill of seeing Sarah Murr and Billy Bourchier (bottom right above) on stage for the 4th time each this year. Two 21 year olds with gigantic talents. Although understudying more major roles their numerous ensemble characters was a complete surprise as they each seemed to be prominent in scene after scene and with so many solo sings I was simply awestruck by their enormous talent. They are truly stars on the rise. I wish I had a photo of Sarah toting that huge rifle as she mounted the battlements, Billy with his crutches dance and their heroic deaths. So many moments to shine because I could not take my eyes off them. As I am not writing a book I will just mention three outstanding voices that affected me so much.

Of course Simon Gleeson as Jean Valjean just had to elicit loud screaming Bravos from me, Kerry Greenland as Eponine brought forth hushed gasps from everyone around me and Euan Doige (above) as Marius had the most beautiful, young and adorable voice. A truly individual sound that had a gentility that was pure passion and love.

I should also mention that Trevor Ashley is surely a great Australian Star. An amazing performer, a charismatic chameleon and an entertainer par excellence. As the last note rung out David Bentley and I were the first to our feet yelling for the cast, the production and well we must not forget the composers. This is truly a musical/modern opera of great worth and this is a performance that should not be missed.

'Heavenly Bodies & Beautiful Souls' is an interconnected doubly bill of plays written and directed by 'The Bard of Brisbane' Sven Swenson and presented by Pentimento Productions.

The first of his plays I have seen but my attention was grabbed when I saw him collecting one award after another at the most recent Matilda Awards. He was also responsible for 'The Truth about Kookarburras' which had a smash run here that I had meant to see but lacked friends to go with.

Well the first play 'Heavenly Bodies' set in Singapore in 1942 opens with what we thgought was an unfamiliar Noel Coward song "Put That Sailor Down" which turned out to be Sven singing a composition by multi talented Peter Crees whose piano playing you could hear throughout. Peter was also associate producer and I have seen him as actor, viloinist etc before.

I really do not want to say what happens in this room in a brothel as bombs explode incessently outside, but what begins as a nervous meeting between a naive, sweet and just charming soldier from the bush Sam Ryan and a quite stunning Laidie, Regan Lynch, offering comfort to the soldiers, develops as they open up and expose their thoughts and feelings until nothing is left to hide including complete, comfortable and honest nudity. It becomes one of the most tender and beautiful pictures of people coming together as loneliness and fear overtake them in a foreign land.

Ofter interval we are thrust forward to a prison in Thailand where three young people, Zac Boulton, Peter Mickey Norton and Casey Woods, are facing that most horrible and barbaric of punishments. The connection with the first play will be revealed slowly and with tenderness although they do not have to be seen together. There is great love and some innocent humour, but terrifying fear is the overwhelming atmosphere as the noose hangs ominously above their heads. I can not praise too much the strength of acting throughout and actually wondered how they could maintain the physical expression of such anguish without passing out from the shaking and the hyperventilating.

The designs by Raymond Milner are in stark contrast with each other and so evocative of the mood. People have called these works some of the greatest Australian theatre and I saw 'Beautiful Souls' has had seasons in both New York and Los Angeles'

Oh what a night! Last night I went to the new original play 'Country Song' about the legendary Australian indigenous singer Jimmy Little.

Conceived by and starring Michael Tuahine whose voice is so rich and resonant, that even when he speaks it cries musicality. After the show when cousin Michelle Boyd and I went to a bar in Grey St we ran into Michael and the enthusiastic and charming QTC Exectutive Director Sue Donnelly and had a drink and a really great chat.

It was only a short time into the show that I realised that this work will live on, travel and become part of the Australian theatre cannon. Being just in its early performances I can see it will develop and grow and I hear that already there is a huge tour around the country booked for next year. It is an important part of our history that needs to be embedded into our collected culture. I was blessed to once again see David Page on stage. David is a local boy who apart from being an exceptional actor and brilliantly powerful and versatile singer is the musical genius behind the 'family business' of Bangarra Dance Theatre. Wait till you see some of his spectacular characters that just about brought the house down.

Another star in the making is the young Tibian Christopha Wyles who has just graduated from the exceptional performance school ACPA. So many have come from there and are filling places and adding richness to companies all over the country. It is at least the third time I have seen Tibian already and it was such a pleasure to get to shake hands and chat to him after the show. What a talented and oh so charming young man.

I was surprised and so pleased to see Elaine Crombie at the briefing a couple of weeks ago and last night I was left in awe by her brilliant acting and awesome voice. She could play with your emotions, lull you into a comfort zone and then belt out a song which left you quiet stunned. I really liked exchanging some thumbs up across the footlights as the audience stood, sang and clapped along with the last number which challenged us to stand and be counted. Elaine and I are good facebook mates now I am delighted to say. Everyone was wonderful. I also got to shake hands with and chat to the incredible lighting guy Jason Glenwright who has weaved his magic over so many events I have seen in the last year or so. I will drag out the programmes and try and count them up one day. He truly adds something special to everything he works on.

The foyer was also fun as I ran into the beautiful Leigh Alexander Buchanan. Leigh is also one of those Brisbane talents who spreads his incredible eye over so much of what happens here. He is working on the costumes for Candide which I go to see next Friday and also Happy Days which I see in three weeks as well as more to come like Dracula. I must see if he can spruce me up one day. As I said what a night!!

The 7 Stages of Grieving

Last night we went to 'The 7 Stages of Grieving' starring the wonderful Chenoa Deemal. Created twenty years ago by Wesley Enoch and Deborah Mailman this work has been revived by several outstanding Australian indigenous actors including my dear and beautiful friend Ursula Yovich. Chenoa played the daughter od Ursula Yovich in the outstanding Mother Courage and Her Children back in 2013.

With some gentle updates by Chenoa and director, the fabulous Jason Klarwein this remains a strong, important and so relevant piece even post 'Sorry', 'Reconciliation' and especially in the light of the foul evictions from home country being perpetrated by governments as we speak. This is the bloody 21st century for god's sake. The LNP learn nothing. The new design of the production was masterful and so beautiful. Light and sand are the essence of this country and the contrast provided by the projections of what is wrong led to an attempted standing ovation until Chenoa sat us back down for a great Q&A. Lots of tears and lots of cheering for all full houses.

Bangarra Dance Theatre

Last night I saw 'Lore' the latest show presented by Bangarra Dance Theatre Consisting of two new works. the first was 'I.B.I.S.' inspired the islands of the Torres Strait and created by Deborah Brown and Waangegga Blanco and a work of celebratory joy which had me in tears by the end because of the sheer beauty and spirit of the work. Following interval was 'Sheoak' a more complex work created by Frances Ring and growing out of the contemporary experience of knowledge, nurturing, affliction of poisons.

Central to both works was the remarkable Elma Kris. This is a dancer who has been in the company 16 years and although she has such experience she is remarkably young but holds centre stage with a towering but humble presence. When she is on stage all eyes look to her for a lead. Such magnificent dancing is what one expects but always the breath is taken away by the expressiveness, beauty and imagination of this major Australian company which is the only dedicated voice of the soul of this country. There are remarkable characters like Kaine Sultan-Babij, Luke Currie- Richardson and the amazing Yolanda Lowatta whom I knew well from Dance Noir and has skyrocketed to a starring role. She is just stunning to watch with movement that ripples through her body with joy and passion. For me it was a great thrill to see Leonard Mickelo on stage again. His work makes him one of the most perfect dancers in this country. His approach is immersed in commitment, beauty and that special something that makes every movement inspired. I was so happy that I did get to congratulate him again after the show as he has left Facebook behind.

One last comment is praise for the epic soundtrack for Sheoak by the uber great master musician/actor etc etc David Page. I just saw him here recently in Country Song which has now begun touring. The music was symphonic in scale and so powerful. As a bonus last night we had an hour long conversation on stage with Artistic Director and most important Australian Stephen Page and proud father of rising superstar Hunter Page-Lochard whom he spoke about with a lot of love and admiration. It was a full night. To add to the theme of so many recent posts I have made, Stephen mentioned that 70% of Bangarra are from Queensland. Such talent here is astounding.

Lore is also the most successful production they have presented in Brisbane. Do go and see Bangarra any time and be truly inspired and affected.

Conservatorium Theatre

Last night for their last concert in Brisbane for the year we hada great collection of works both old nad new. The evening began well when the lovely woman at the box office said I was a Symphony in Green (sort of matching clothes) and then my glass of house red was delicious. I make no pretence of knowing one red from another.

The first gorgeous piece was by the 16 year old Juan Crisóstomo Jacobo Antonio de Arriaga y Balzola who was a Spanish Basque composer. He was nicknamed "the Spanish Mozart" because he was also a child prodigy and shared the same birthday (50 years apart) and was an accomplished composer who died young at age 20 possibly from TB. Such talent and such beautiful music. I just thought of all those kids sitting on the street and what could be.

Next was the premier of a new piece by Brisbane born and international conductor, violinist and composer Brett Dean for strings and soprano. ' And once I played Ophelia'.

Guest singer Allison Bell has a laser focused high and powerful voice. There were echoes, outbursts and soaring vocal gymnastics while the stringplayers at one stage had to bow with such lightning speed I worried for their wrists and then folowed by another section that vibrated at almost subliminal quietness. It was a showpiece, but I personally felt the need to an apparent resolution.

The evening finished with the grand Schubert 'Death and the Maiden' with its gut wrenching depth and agitation. Franz Schubert also died tragically young at 31 from Syphilis. that is a very young drawing of Schubert above. Great concert and already booked for next year. I did have the lovely opportunity for a very brief chat with the beautiful Stephen King the Viola player whom I have met on a few occasions. (cover above) It was good to welcome the new violinist Francesca Hiew from Brisbane who will be part of the new permanent lineup next year.

'THE ODD COUPLE' I may not have been to New York and I may not have much in common with the characters in this 50 year old play, but it was hystercally funny. What made it so great was watching some of my favourite actors (boys and girls) absolutely firing lightning speed off each other in one of the tightest and funniest ensemble pieces I have had the pleasure to see.

There are of course the leads Oscar and Felix played by the slobbed up Jason Klarwein and traumatised anally retentive Tama Matheson. The magic these two create on stage together is well known and last night it was genuine marriage of two actors bouncing off each other in tenderness, endless frustration and energetic fun until there is growth and resolution. They have a bunch of long term friends who are so individually unique, distinct and drawn with brilliant precision.

Colin Smith as Murray whom I finally had the chance to meet after with an amazing NY cop (or taxi driver i thought) accent, Tim Dashwood who was the neurotic, nervous worrier Roy, Bryan Probets the cooperative and ever grateful friend Vinnie and Steven Rooke as the realistic tough Speed. Each were so strong and watching the timing of the interactions and the clarity of the accented diction was quite mesmerising. It really is good to go to a play where all is heard and even the snippents of Opera on Felix's records were so carefully chosen to comment on the action, like 'La Donna e Mobile' or 'The Woman is Fickle'.

I was told the addition of the two English sisters Amy Ingram (Cecily) and Lauren Jackson (Gwendolyn) was the master stroke that Neil Simon needed to make this a success and then a classic. Do I hear 'The Importance Of Being Ernest' anyone? Of course we all know that it was the last production directed by our dearest Wesley Enoch who flew back and attended the Meet the Artists night so it was a great Q&A that went far longer than the time allotted with a particular discussion on the word 'Creatives'. Speaking of off stage artists Daniel Anderson as assistant Lighting Designer was the only one I have met on previous occasions. Everyone wanted to just keep talking, laughing and arguing. I met the new Programming Manager as well last night and when I go to the Briefing for 'Ladies in Black' next Monday I hope to meet the new Artistic Director of Queensland Theatre Company Sam Strong.

Last night at the the Burke St Studios - Queensland Conservatorium I had the great pleasure of seeing and listening to 27 3rd year students and one outstanding pianist in concert. What voices, what promise and so many shone out not only vocally but in presentation. They obviously love what they do and it shows in the confidence, passion or comedy when required. It should not be a surprise that there is wonderful talent here, for after all the Con has been turning out world class voices for decades. In the Opera school I used to watch Lisa Gasteen in student productions before she headed off to the Met, Bayreuth etc and is now heads up her Opera school back here. She was just one of many. Last year's graduates from the Musical Theatre, Billy Bourchier and Georgina Hopson just recently stunned everyone in The Pirates of Penzance. So looking forward to seeing them again soon.

Once again I saw the year three students of the Musical Theatre school of the Queensland Conservatorium. This time they acted and sang in a production of Working A Musical. What brilliant voices, what stage charisma, what acting. So often I thought I could be sitting in a theatre on Broadway. Perhaps I should drop that comparison because Australian musical theatre stands enormously high and its own standards soar. Imaginatively set with simple platforms and coloured stools all perfectly and beautifully lit by Jason Glenwright a master of those spots and colours. There were so many strong resonant voices I hate to mention only a few but I was again impressed so much by my fb friends, Isaac Saunders, Max Radvan and Oliver Samson. These singers/actors are a must see. The show runs until Saturday and then heads off to Melbourne and Sydney.

Last night 5 of us had the great joy of watching an enormous number of musical theatre students from year two at the Conservatorium in an absolute hoot of a production of Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. We are continuing to be knocked out by the talent of these students having already seen two evenings with the Third year students already this year. There are more productions and concerts this year so you really must go along. Apart from the great voices,wonderful acting and stage presence on display for over two hours I had the distinct pleasure of meeting two exceptional people Isaac Saunders and Sarah Murr whom I have seen just recently. They have just returned from a great tour down to Melbourne and on Sunday they are off to show Sydney what they are all made of. You really should try and get along to the Bourke st Studio Wooloongabba before Saturday. The students are rotating roles so everyone gets a change. What talent!!!!

The Coronation of Poppea - Last night at the Conservatorium we were treated to an evening of great singing. Several sections were of such excruciatingly beauty that we left the theatre thrilled by the talent of the students. I recall the some 35 years ago when the Qld. Conservatorium (across the river) was churning out the likes of Lisa Gasteen, Jeffrey Black, Miriam and Clare Gormley we attended then and we attend now. In fact I first bumped into the friend whom I went with last night at a Lisa Gasteen student production back in 1979. Enough of the past. Last night I had tingles as I listened to the two stunning chorus pieces. Blended voices to die for. Amongst the cast were some voices of such maturity and ravishing tone like Phillip Prendergast as Nerone, strength and absolute perfection of diction like Samuel Piper as Ottone, brilliance of voice and amazing stage presence of Sebastian Maclaine. I was also so taken by the lovely tone of one of the Soldiers whom I think was Cameron Taylor (the taller). The Drusilla of Lauren Lodge- Campbell had a beautiful brightness that made me think of a Musetta one day. Simple memories of the way it affected me and there is one more performance tonight.

This year I have been frequenting the Conservatorium here in Brisbane Queensland at both the Opera/music campus at South Bank and also at the Musical Theatre school at Woollongabba. I have been seeing the second and third year students in severl amazing shows. Graduates and even undergraduates are already being cast in top musical theatre and opera in this country, such is the exceptional talent coming forth from the world top trainers.

What a joy to see great talent in the making from the second year students. Last night we went to the Cabaret at the Con. An evening of so much more than a showcase for each of the students.

So well put together with the exceptional musical talent of the awesome Bev Kennedy who is one of Australia's leading musical directors and accompanists. It is the second time I have been lucky to see her stunning piano work this year as she backed the divine Paul Capsis in a concert earlier this year. After the shoiw I had a brief chat with Bev and kissed her hand to show my respect for her brilliance which she shares with the students. The whole evening of 38 numbers really shon a light on not only some amazingly brilliant voices, but their acting ability, charisma and also some individual multi talents andf their good looks. They will go far.

There was some great dance moves and string playing I saw from Michael Mandalios, Wonderful violin from Michael Boulus, Stephen Adams did some nifty Saxophone work, Isaac Lindley knew his guitar so well and Hayden Rodgers brought the house down with his powerful belter number.

Not satisfied with solo numbers the whole cast formed some brilliantly sung chorus back up some perfect a capella vocals and timing was outstanding as they sang scattered all around the room. Interaction with the audience was mostly carried off with such ease although it scares the shit out of very shy me. A seamless evening that was like being inside a musical and not just sitting at a table . It was also great to see the irrepressible graduate Dan Venz there so full of enthusiasm. He has been in several professional shows I have seen this year. So much talent in one room both performing and supporting.

Blood Brothers at the Queensland Conservatorium - Musical Theatre is a moving, perfectly directed, absolutely brilliantly acted piece of theatre with exceptional singing. I have not seen or even heard of this piece but I can see why it ran for over 10,000 performances in London. Joyful, exuberant, playful, sincere, sad and eventually tragic it had me in tears. The talent emanating from this amazing training centre is quite overwhelming. I have seen graduates and even some not yet graduated in very major productions here and with more to come this year. Under the direction of Australian born (correction Newcastle UK born) International director Ian Good the attention to detail left me with not a moment that was not enhanced and true. It is basically a 3rd year production but it was pleasing to see the inclusion of 2nd year students that had impressed me in a couple of other shows I have seen this year. The multi talented and versatile Michael Boulus and the energetic and charming Isaac Lindley were just two. Matthew Semple was a great and loving father Mr Lyons as well as some other short roles, and the beaming voice of Narrator Jacqueline McLaren was a stand out as was Tash Walker the compassionate Mrs Johnstone. However the title stars were just brilliant. Tim Carroll as Eddie was outstanding. He was the nicest guy in the world, faithful, endearing and the audience just warmed to everything he did. They laughed with his awkwardness and felt for his loneliness.

As the brother Mickey, Alex Woodward is a star who gave a performance of such commitment it was breathtaking. From the seven year old, full of life and wonder to the horrifying conclusion when he has fallen apart it was acting on a large canvas. He was in tears as he took his bows. It took a lot out of him and us as he threw himself into the exhausting role with nothing held back. Probably school policy that they only took one bow as they are still in training, but the audience just kept cheering and I just kept crying. Bravo all and anyone reading this should go. Great great singing, superb acting and thoroughly convincing.

Conservatorium Theatre

Hansel and Gretel is pure delight. Last night at the Queensland Conservatorium Griffith University I saw Engelbert Humperdinck's 1893 opera which is jam packed full of lush, melodic music with the outstanding orchestration so Wagnerian in scale at times played by the great forces and brilliant sound of the Conservatorium Orshestra under the direction of German born conductor Johannes Fritzsch who had first conducted this opera for Opera Australia in 1992. Wonderful singing and spot on acting, great set and lighting by always illuminating Jason Glenwright made for a truly enjoyable evening.

Once again I was so impressed by the beautiful resonant sound of Samuel Piper as the Father. He impressed me in 'The Coronation of Poppea' recently and yet again I thought this is a voice I hope to see grow into a regular on our stages.

The exceptionally well received Witch of tenor Phillip Prendergast was laugh out loud fun and also vocally inspired. Everyone knows he is going far. Phillip I had too seen in the recent Poppea and he starred in that. Harking back to that Monteverdi there was a small role, but outstandingly beautiful voice that grabbed me and that was Cameron Taylor, who I was really delighted to finally meet and chat to a couple of times in the foyer. So great to hear that he is continuing on to study at the Lisa Gasteen Opera School next year. This is like a circle as I recall so well seeing Lisa as a student at the conservatorium across the river back in the late 70's and how outstanding she was before she embarked on a huge international career which took her to Bayreuth and the Met etc I have seen her mammoth performances several times and now she is sharing that experience.It is a pity her students may not have had the pleasure of her Don Carlo or Force Of Destiny let alone her Brunhilda.

I did notice that in the programme the conductor referring back to his previous outing with this opera believed that the Elija Moshinsky production back in 1992 was the first fully staged production in Australia. Well I remember one by the old Queensland Opera back around 1980 at Her Majesty's Theatre with Margaret Russell, Luise Napier, Helen Sinden, Patricia Kelly, Margaret Noonan and a fabulously funny Gloria Eiser as the witch flying across the stage cackling. The Australian Opera production came here in 1996 under the auspices of Opera Queensland and that had such luminaries as con graduate and international Clare Gormley as Gretel and the astounding star Suzanne Johnston as Hansel and a fun note is Warwick Adeney (current concert Master of the Qld Symphony) was the concert master of the Qld Philharmonic (later to be absorbed into Qld symphony). I still have that programme. Anyway there was a thunderous applause and cheering at the end from the full house.

'Our Turn' is what the final year students from the Queensland Conservatorium - Musical Theatre are putting triumphantly before their audiences this week and then they will be showcasing also in Melbourne and Sydney. This is their last outing as a group before they set off into the world after many adding the finishing touches of this great school to their already significant amount of experience and training. I read of graduates form Trinity College London, many universities, training since almost the day they could walk and dedication. They of course can sing, many are accomplished instramentalists, they can dance, be overpoweringly dramatic and hilariously comedic. The broad spectrum of their training will no doubt be used in a variety of ways. Some will take to the dramatic stage where their musical ability will enhance their career, Some will shine as leading ladies and gentlemen in national and international productions, many will develop their own unique stage persona, but all will make our lives that little bit more meaningful and add to the wonder of the arts.

Yes it was last night I was enthralled to see these artists on stage yet again. Many I have befriended on Facebook and some I have actually met face to face and this way I will be able hopefully to follow their career and keep an eye on when I can see them on stage again. This was my eighth Con production this year and I have booked for two more yet to come.

As for the artists and in no predetermined order - Tim Carroll's voice is simply magnificent and just as impressive, strong and brilliant as he was in Blood Brothers as was the truly exceptional and controlled dramatic talents of Alex Woodward. Oliver Samson once again felt like that beautiful voice was directed just to me. When he sings it is personal and I was shocked when he did a great leap with legs outstretched. Benjamin Hambley's Auslan monologue from Torch Song Trilogy was heartwarmimg, comedic, touching and perfection. Harvey would be proud of him. Sam Christensen has enough charisma and glint in his eye to grab the attention of any audience as does the smile of Tony Byrnes. I must say I am not neglecting the singing abilities of any of the performers just highlighting memories from last night . The production was a seamless just over an hour non stop weaving of over fifty snippets of mainly song, some great choreography and spoken scenes. Simon Mason is immersed in multiple instruments, production and anything musical since the age of two I see and he will use that passion to place himself so well. Max Radvan is unique. He has a look, a passion and the way he immerses himself just has to lead to a career created for himself. Once again the wonderful Isaac Saunders let loose with extra talents like the great Tap Dance number he did and that wooden box he loves to play. Then there is the gentleman Matthew Semple who shon again He can add such nuanced feeling to his presentations.

I loved when the male cast members gathered to sing a fabulous rendition of "I Am Wht I Am" So may different looks, so many different voices such beautiful faces and such talent. I could see wonderful characters, leading men, actors, singers soloists. I could see them all moving out with style. Don't forget you have to audition just to be accepted so the standard starts high and goes up from there.

A thoroughly lovely night and i must add no one is mentioned in any particular order. Just thoughts that popped up as I sit here with coffee. Do go along and watch these artists while they are affordable. One day like me you will be paying big bucks to see graduates from the Con as I am already doing. I have seen dozens of people from this school in so many productions over the last few years. It truly is a source of mighty talent.

Second Year students
'RENT' - There is so much talent at the Queensland Conservatorium - Musical Theatre they can cast shows multiple times. Yes it is all part of the excellent training, but this you forget when you are carried away by the show. In the 70 odd visits to a theatre this year I have been reduced to tears on three occasions and two of those have been at the Burke St. Studio. I have also never failed to cry at the end of La Boheme and as Rent is based on that tragic story of love it was probably a dead cert that I might end up wiping my eyes. Mimi doesn't quite die, but the glorious Angel does and when Isaac Lindley sang that heart wrenching song no one could hold back. I can only talk about the cast I saw, but I do know the great talents of several of the alternatives.

As I just mentioned Michael Boulus was a stunning Angel, genuine, beautiful and every bit the kind soul for which she is remembered. Great singing, enveloping acting and transformations.

As her boyfriend Tom Collins, Isaac Lindley was nothing short of brilliant. His baritone voice just resonates powerfully with musicality. It is a sound that made people near me gasp. Truly a wonderful tone and he can flip from passionate love to true sorrow with conviction.

Hayden Rodgers as the central Roger is an amazing singer. I have been overwhelmed by his exceptionally beautiful voice on other occasions and he truly is destined for great things and his astounding Mimi, Lorinda May Merrypor has a voice that is just perfect for the stage. Powerful without pushing, tone that is full of life and clarity and boy can she dance. She is almost a gymnist as she sings upside down, doing the splits etc. A real tour de force.

Stephen Adams as Mark was so great to watch and this boy can dance. He looks so good on his feet as well as the persevering camera boy.

It was so wonderful to see the charismatic Michael Mandalios taking on several roles. He has a beautiful presence on stage that is endearing, assured and talented. I have seen Michael like the others a few times this year. They all have so many talents apart from singing and removing shirts. None of them neglected their character when being quiet to the side of the stage. Due to the casts changes I only saw Thomas Armstrong-Robley in a minor role as he Plays the lead Roger on alternate nights but his short solo still reminded me of what a performer he is. He also did the Programme design. Of course at the back of the stage you could see and hear the stunning keyboard work of musical director Luke Volker who has added his amazing musical mastery to several productions this year, Into The Woods and Teenage Dreams are two that immediately come to mind and amongst his players was Dominic Woodhead who I have also seen ofetn accompaning the singers and I will also see tomorrow if I get to the QPAC Green for a lunch time free concert subject to storms. Last but certainly not least is the lighting of Jason Glenwright. I keep saying he does so much spectacular work and I read in the programme that he has 200 productions to his name. I was right. He lit up the stage in the most beautiful and joyous Christmas Eve Scene. It positively glittered. and the overhanging paper light-shade moon was so fitting in mood and period.

I would say you must rush and see this but it sold out days ago so place your bets and book early next time. Photos of course by the amazing Nick Morrissey

'Rumour Has it' at the Bille Brown Studio. The first thought I had last night as I stood to leave the theatre was we don't have to go anywhere. Brisbane has it all as far as talent goes. The night belonged to the amazing talent of Naomi Price, but you know you are getting something special when you get the backing of singers of the caliber of Luke Kennedy, Tom Oliver and Rachel Everett-Jones and the fine musicians led by stunning guitarist Jason McGregor. Before I talk about the show I have to say what a beautiful bunch of people graced the stage. They are all gorgeous.

Naomi gave us so much more than an evening of cabaret as a tribute to the brilliant British Singer Songwriter Adele. It went so much deeper into the character , the history and the personality of one great star, a simple and earthy girl from Tottenham. It was a brilliantly acted one woman Play, a hilarious and saucy stand up Comedy and a phenomenal musical Concert. Starting as a 15 minute satire a few years back and developing over the years with The Little Red Company and now with the additional resources of The Queensland Theatre Company and its fourth return to the stage here it is one hell of a show. The great lighting by the sensational and overworked Jason Glenwright created an atmosphere that was both beautiful and evocative and we had the additional splendour and magic of the entire room filling with floating bubbles and glittering tinsel.

Naomi can belt out a song, can melt your heart, can move you to tears and get you to your feet for a standing ovation. She has you laughing, she has you or some possibly shocked and she has you entertained for two hours. In the palm of her hands the audience clapped along, bopped their heads and even sang when required, except me who can not hit a note of any description I am of an age as were many others, but that did not stop the grey heads rocking along, yelling out, dancing in their chairs along with those somewhat younger. I would so recommend you go along but you are too late and it has been sold out and it finishes tonight so unless you mugg someone with a ticket you miss out. Have faith in what is put on stage here in Brisbane and just book to see as much as you can. Last night was my 61st visit to a theatre in Brisbane this year.

It was a week or so more than exactly three years since I first saw and heard the phenomenal voice of Luke Kennedy in 'I War' in this very theatre and became an instant fan. He probably doe not recall me writing to him immediately back then to express my genuine love of his vocal magic. Last night was also the third time I have seen Tom Oliver on stage this year just 15 days after his universally praised outstanding appearance as Jack in 'Into The Woods' They all had a short solo and so appreciated spotlight at the end. As for the star of the evening I saw Naomi Price in the premier of a great new local play 'Gloria' recently and will again when she appears in the new Tim Finn musical 'Ladies in Black' on the 3rd of December.

It was such a thrill to see the legendary diva Marcia Hines. She came to Australia back in the late sixties to be in 'Hair' and the JC Superstar and became Queen of Pop for years and years. She looked stunning and sounded every inch the brilliant singer she has always been. It was remarkable to see her up close at about a few feet away.

Velvet redefines cabaret as a disco inferno of show-stopping singers, dancer and acrobats. Winning awards at the Adelaide Festival and then knocking them out at the Edinburg Festival we finally had our chance before they moved on to The Sydney Opera House.

Directed by Craig Ilott (Smoke & Mirrors), the all-star cast also featured singer-songwriter Brendan Maclean whom I have met and seen on numerous occasions for three years now. Brendan was also in the film The Greta Gatsby'. He is an imp on stage and the audience adore him as he flirts unashamedly with a twinkle in his eye and a golden voice to swoon over or rock to. He is remarkably charismatic and talented.

Also starring was mixmaster and nifty drummer Joey Accaria , the oh so cute hoola-boy extraordinaire Craig Reid, New Orleans burlesque Queen Perle Noire who did the first traditional strip routine I have ever seen. Quite mesmerising were the sizzling and gorgeous acrobats local acrobatic star Stephen Williams and Mirko Kockenberger who is from Berlin. Power exuded from the sublime vocal backing by Chaska Halliday and Rechelle Mansour.

Powerhouse - Melt Festival

What a beautiful night again at the Powerhouse for the close of the first and fabulous Melt Queer Festival under the direction of James Lees . First I got to chat with the remarkable singer Lucinda Shaw and Fionn Ellwood, then again I had a fabulous chat with the awesomely stunning actor Thomas Cyril Larkin who had just finished a performance of the sensational and sexy Sex With Strangers which I go to see again on Tuesday night. I had two catch ups with Emily Gilhome who directed Dash Kruck's I Might Take My Shirt Off last night and the hugely successful epic Boy&Girl a couple of weeks ago. Always fabulous Leigh Alexander Buchanan whom I saw in The Devil Wears Leigh Buchanan recently and which will have a return soon,was there as well and I got to have yet another chat. Such support from everyone for everyone. The main reason most were there was for the superstar Paul Capsis. What an astounding show, What an awesome voice and what a great evening. Standing ovations, foot stomping and cheers all evening. Paul is just one of the best singers in the country and when he channels the legends it is spellbinding. He was accompanied on piano by one of our leading talents Bev Kennedy whose playing can just about knock you out of your chair. I was super thrilled when he pointed at me and mentioned my name during the show. Big hugs in the foyer after the show and my night was complete. Friends, love and great music, dance, theatre and art is non stop at the Powerhouse. I have been there so often of late I should pitch a tent.

Wild Rice for The Brisbane Festival

Last night I had such a wonderful evening. I set off to see the visiting production of 'The Importance of Being Ernest' from Singapore. It was the first play I have seen this year that I did not know anyone in the cast, but by evenings end I had met them all. As everyone says it is the perfect play, full of wit and language that excites the brain. Oscar Wilde is one of the great treasures of the English Language and one of my idols. Although I have seen it on stage before and many filmed versions it was like watching it for new although I could probably recite most of it from memory. The cast said they could hear the audience anticipating the dialogue. There was so much laughter throughout, but I tend to try and hold back because the words are not to be missed and are exquisite ornaments to be fully appreciated.

One of the great additions was the string quartet from the Qld. Conservatorium (not them in the picture below) who played several pieces of Bach Mozart Haydn and Boccherini etc. before the play began while the cast handed out cucumber sandwiches to the audience and leading in to Act Two from the interval with a glorious Bach solo cello prelude. The all male cast was so fitting and I tended to forget that the women who continued to have female pronouns and male costumes were in fact men. A little like the device Visconti and Fellini use of placing a camera in the scene to remind you that it is cinema they played with vocal registers and dropped now and then to show a bit of testosterone to bring back awareness of the maleness of the characters and this gave particular poignancy to modern political and sexual discussions here and also in the even more conservative Singapore society.

Ivan Heng formed this company Wild Rice back in 2000 and he also did the design after Beadsley, and played the magnificent Lady Bracknell with panach and such fabulous outfits. You can see a great video chat with Ivan below. What a charming man he was to talk to. I have so much to say, like how stunningly beautiful is Gavin Yap as Cecily and how charming his personality as the young ward, Absolutely hilarious and wonderful both on and off stage was Chua En Lai who played Lady Bracknell's daughter Gwendolen and just fantastic and truly outstanding was Hossan Leong as the prim and somewhat forgetful Miss Prism who is the cause of all this comedy. Never lose your Handbag. Mischief will be afoot and Oscar Wilde's invention is one of the great classics of the English Stage and throughout the world.

After the show we retired to the Russell St Wine Bar and it was there that we cought up with all the cast and chatted and drank with them for an hour or more before popping over to Arcadia again for more Red Wine and Gluten Free Donuts and even more friends. They loved being here and now that this relationship with Singapore has been created with the festival I and they hope to see them back and also theatre cooperation would be wouderful. I certainly mentioned people and festivals they should look at etc. Now to add all this to my blog tomorrow with even more photos.

Many years ago I saw a memorable production with the legendary Ruth Cracknell, Geoffrey Rush and Gordon Chater. This one went down in Australian theatre history.

Harvest Rain Theatre Company

Last night I came home on such a high. I hade firstly been ensconced in the centre of the front row for Harvest Rain's production of 'Into The Woods' at the Concert Hall, brilliantly directed by Tiim O Connor. After a speech which I had possibly gate crashed, I met and hugged Tim and had a brief chat with him as he beamed with delight at the great success. He truly knows how to cast and bring a show to life. I have seen several now and the company goes from strength to strenght.

Pirates of Penzance and Guys and Dolls on this site.

From the outset I have to say the bite, sharp observation and wit are back in this show, unlike what was missing in the filmed version which I found bland. So if you had liked the film you really must experience how much better it can be live. This is how it should be and I recommed you rush right now to buy a ticket before it closes on Sunday.

So many great roles and so many ridiculoiusly talented people. Rhonda Burchmore was simply awesome as the Witch and her transformation from crone to beauty was quite stunning. It is one of those big ovation moments. After the show I managed to fawn and kiss her hand out in the foyer. It seemed appropriate. Stars like Rachel Beck and Eddie Perfect so justified their reputations as some of Australia's best.

For me it was a special treat to once again see some truly great, exciting and rising stars like the glowing beauty Georgina Hopson as Cinderella whose stunning voice is a very precious gem even if Cinders is far from sure footed, and Tom Oliver as the naive Jack whose wonderful voice, charm and extraordinary charisma are projecting him in an ever upward trajectory. These two outstanding newcomers were both in Pirates Of Penzance earlier this year and tonight I managed to meet them both and congratulate them on an exceptional show. It made me so glad to be able to spread the love around including a hug for the birthday girl Georgina. What a way for her to celebrate with yet another huge success after only graduating in 2014.

Seeing Stephen Hirst yet again was a treat as he seduced Red as the Wolf and then had a go at everyone as the hilariously arrogant and disgustingly 'charming' prince. The second prince was beautifully played and sung by the very handsome Perth boy Riley Sutton who also doubled as the Steward. I was extraordinarily so pleased to see a real little horror as Red Riding Hood. Kinberley Hodgson was a hoot. She was as bloodthirsty, noisy, annoying and greedy as any great Red should be. A treat worth remembering. Musical genius and profoundly charming Jason Barry-Smith was musical director and produced a truly amazing theatrical and vibrant sound from the live orchestra on stage at the back of the set. I was lucky to chat to Jason as well. It still amazes me how Harvest Rain can transform the Concert Hall into a proscenium stage.

One final note is that this outstanding professional Musical Theatre company exists only through the generosity of donors and ticket sales. We have two great training centres for Musical Theatre here in Brisbane and some absolutely extraordinary talent emerging who are taking their place nationally, so it would be an outstanding idea for the Government to ensure it continues and flourishes with the introduction of financial support. I recall Wesley Enoch having an idea of making Brisbane a centre for the development of Australian Musical Theatre and with the proposal of an additiuonal 1500 seat theatre being built the time is now. Time to write to our wonderful Arts Minsiter and Premier and ask her to get on board.

All praise to Anton Chekov for a masterpiece and super praise to Daniel Evans for a relevant, gripping and exceptional adaptation. Last night I went to The Seagull.

Back on the 24th August I went to a briefing about the new production and you can see my shiny bald spot in the photo above. How informative and inclusive are these evenings. So much more insight into the upcoming play and the processes behind the production and the approach given by the cast and creatives. Then we come to the play itself and once again Daniel has written a script and on this occasion also directed a work that is absorbing, affecting and awash with wonderful language, reference and eloquence immersed in modern colour and familiarity. He was so blessed as always to have the benefit of a set of truly outstanding actors who in this version are all given prominance. No one is left in the background and all shon so brightly last night. I heard people heaping praise on the actors, the emotional impact and on the relevance of this piece first performed October 17 1896.

I was lucky enough to have so many people I know on facebook or at least met involved. Christen O'Leary as the loud and proud diva Irena with a hidden insecurity and vulnerability as a performer moving to maturity, Emily Burton as the young aspiring, but apparently failing actress Nina, Jason Klarwein as the pretentious self absorbed writer Trigorin, Nicholas Gell as the passionate,insecure new writer Konstantin with mother issues, Barbara Lowing as the sensational and frustrated Ilya, Hugh Parker as the unfaithful doctor, Lucas Stibbard as the forlorn, but ever hopeful Medvedenko, Helen Cassidy as Ilya's also unfaithful lover Polina and Amy Ingram as the very bitter Masha. Once again the night had an outstanding performance from Brian Lucas as he indulged with all his being in the at times joyful decent of Sorin into mental instability and death. A truly involved performance that members of the audience owned up to the tears they shed. The sexual intrigues were paramount as the relationships evolved with abandon and the discussion it holds on the nature and background of theatre, writing and the artists involved is totally fascinating for anyone interested in the arts.

Once again Ben Hughes did a brilliant job with real lighting, moods and focus and with the magic sound scape of Guy Webster the whole evening was enhanced, especially when we were left with the full cast singing a heart wrenching song which Guy had hinted at, throughout the play and fulfilled as the lights dimmed.

After the show I stayed for the meet the artists Q&A which was the icing on the cake as they revealed even more of the process and their feelings now that they are well into the season. Then for yet another glass of Red as I got to hug, shake hands with and congratulate a few of the artists involved. I was also luck enough to finally meet Tim Dashwood who was in the audience. Tim I have been seeing on stage for a few years now like most of the cast last night and their talents and versatility is one of the great blessings of theatre in Brisbane. You really must go and see this and you will have an amazing time.

Metro Arts

Three cheers for Kate Wild for forming a new theatre company 'Now Look Here' after working at places like The Gate Theatre and the Young Vic in London and now editing and directing Chekov's 'The Seagull' at the Warehouse space at Metro Arts here in Brisbane. What a fine cast and what a wonderful evening of theatre. Be prepared to overcome some physical hurdles manifest at the neglected Metro arts building. I was involved there in several ways with having movies, opera functions, exhibitions and meetings there around 35 years ago. It is certainly time for the government to invest a bit of money in repairs to maintain one of the few inner city arts spaces still in existence.

OK lets create a play with almost no set on a flat floor with a small number of chairs and a performance that draws you in, includes you in the action and makes you feel at home. Not just the physical environment but the actors and the activity made me feel like I was in a parlor as another guest. It was riveting. take a bunch of people, some writers, some actors going through the same traumas as today brought about by self absorption, emotional immaturity dreaming and passions on the loose and watch them mirror our insecurities, our frustrations and our blunders. There was such a strong cast and beautiful performances and several actors have seen previously like Thomas Hutchins (above) as Kostya (this is his 6th production I have seen). Thomas has magic eyes and a underlying musical resonance in his voice that is quite outstanding. Another great aspect of the evening was the choreographed light and set changes (minimal set) which became part of the performance of Kristian Šantić who played Jakov.
