'As Financial Conduct Authority managing director Martin Wheatley lays out his vision of how consumers will be protected by the future FCA, I hope he reflects on the root causes of the utter mess savings, investment and protection is in today.

Any objective analysis would surely find the consumer has been awfully served by regulated financial services since 1987. The four statutory objectives of regulation have patently not been achieved these last 25 years.

Rather, the ordinary person’s desire to save and insure has been catastrophically eroded, indebtedness has soared and, unlike 1986, the average person now has no viable plan for remaining independent of the state when their earnings cease through retirement or ill health. The nation is sleepwalking towards personal poverty as a result.

We have all failed, from Chancellors to bank clerks and all points in between but it is those who have had power who must be chiefly to blame and it is their successors that must turn the thing round.

The reason it is the rule-makers not the rule-breakers who are chiefly to blame is because the Treasury and regulator have been unable to resist increasing their responsibilities to the point where no body in a free society can adequately discharge them. Rather than confining themselves to weeding out conmen and fraudsters, they have set out to ensure there is no way a consumer can strike a bad financial services deal.

In that effort, they must always fail but along the way the worthy desire has caused them to gather up all sorts of powers and levy all sorts of charges and taxes. But at every step, as always happens when one overreaches one’s ability, using those has caused unintended consequences far, far worse than the evils they looked to eradicate...'

'Up the Greek without a paddle' European leaders sling mud while investors wait

'LONDON (SHARECAST) - When politicians can’t get the job done, there’s always mud-slinging to entertain the troops … even when most of the troops are busy in Athens burning buildings … or German flags.

GREECE STEPS INTO THE RING

Greek President Karolos Papoulias has had enough of Germany’s insults and staged his own verbal attack against Berlin’s Finance Minister Wolgang Schäuble.

“I won’t accept insults to my country by Mr. Schäuble. I won’t take it as a Greek. Who is Mr. Schäuble? Who are these Dutch? Who are these Finns?

“We always had the pride to defend not just our own freedom, not only our own country, but the freedom of Europe as a whole,” he said.

These fighting words follow comments made by Schäuble comparing Greece to a “bottomless pit” where Germany was throwing its money away.

GREECE HAS ALSO SLUNG INSULTS

Yet it wouldn’t be fair to say that insults haven’t been thrown from the other side as well. We’ve certainly seen on the evening news the blazing fires in Athens, not just of buildings but also of German flags. Greek citizens involved in the strikes are anything but content over Germany’s attempt to “take control” of its country.

The easy shots at Berlin have also been made with pro-strike propaganda featuring Angela Merkel dressed in a Nazi uniform. In this context, it might not be surprising to note that the German Chancellor seems to have slipped from the front pages.

Her lack of comments is quite conspicuous by its absence, especially while most articles are quick to mention other little “facts” like, for example, that Papoulias fought in the World War II Greek resistance against the Nazi occupation.

There’s no way around it. In its current form, Bank of America poses a grave threat to our economy. It is massive, complex and unstable – too big to manage and too big to regulate. Its assets are equal to roughly one-seventh of the U.S. gross domestic product.

If Bank of America goes down, a sizable chunk of our economy will go down with it.

The Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act gives federal financial regulators the authority to break up dangerous “too big to fail” banks into smaller, simpler and safer institutions — institutions that won’t tank our economy if they go bust.

More than $1 trillion in federal assistance has already gone toward propping up this sprawling behemoth. It’s time to stop propping up and start breaking up.

Petition to Financial Regulators:

We, the undersigned, call on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and the Financial Stability Oversight Council to break up Bank of America. Under section 121 of the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act, you have the authority to break up “too big to fail” banks into smaller, simpler and safer institutions.

If Bank of America in its current form were to fail, it would devastate the U.S. economy. You must act preemptively to make sure that never happens. We cannot wait and find out whether another financial crisis strikes. If that happens, it will be too late to act....'

Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy met in Paris for the UK-France Summit on 17 February. Syria was one of the areas discussed. Text of the Communique on Syria following the summit:

The UK and France:

Reiterate their condemnation of the horrific violence in Syria, which, as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights has said, may amount to crimes against humanity, and demand that it end immediately. By ordering massive use of force against his own people, President Assad has lost legitimacy and must step aside in the best interests of Syria and the unity of the Syrian nation.
Commend the League of Arab States for their leadership and fully support the League’s actions and proposals for offering an orderly and peaceful transition of power in Syria. We welcome the launch of the Group of Friends of Syria in Tunis on 24 February, which our Foreign Ministers will attend.
Welcome the adoption by the UN General Assembly of a resolution which condemns the repression in Syria and calls for the implementation of decisions made by the League of Arab States.
Support the Syrian people in their aspirations for a better future. We loo k forward to a Syria which is open, pluralistic and respectful of the rights of all its communities. A stable, democratic and peaceful Syria would play a responsible and positive role in the region.
Will continue to increase their engagement with the Syrian opposition, including encouraging the opposition to work together and to support the vision of an inclusive, prosperous and free Syria. We encourage the SNC to continue its efforts in this direction.
Call on the UN and other humanitarian agencies urgently to carry out an assessment of humanitarian needs in Homs and other areas afflicted by violence. The Syrian government should implement an immediate ceasefire to allow immediately this assessment to take place and allow free and unimpeded access for humanitarian personnel to deliver vital relief goods and services to civilians affected by the violence.
Commit to increase humanitarian aid to provide life-saving goods an d services, including medical supplies, food, water and essential hou sehold supplies. We will propose the creation of a Humanitarian Working Group of the Friends of Syria to help facilitate delivery of humanitarian assistance.
Support the adoption no later than the 27 February FAC of additional measures by the European Union to increase the pressure on Assad, including a full asset freeze on the Central Bank of Syria.
Are determined that that the EU should offer a substantial package of assistance for transition in Syria, including support on trade, migration, technical assistance, support for elections, justice, rule of law, human rights, development and economic reform.
Underline that those responsible for the violence across Syria should be in no doubt that there will be a day of reckoning. The UK and France reiterate their determination to ensure that evidence of crimes is properly documented in order that those guilty of ordering or committing atrocities can be held to account.

Foreign Secretary visits Botswana 26 years later ...

Foreign Secretary William Hague is in Botswana until 15 February. This will be the first visit by a British Foreign Secretary in twenty-six years.

The visit will further build on the close links between the UK and Botswana in government, business, education and support for Botswana’s development. The visit comes on the back of visits to Botswana from Princes William and Harry in 2010 and the Princess Royal in 2011.

The UK and Botswana are both strong proponents of democracy and good governance. During the visit the Foreign Secretary will discuss a range of current foreign policy and trade and investment issues with HE President Khama, Foreign Minister Skelemani and the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee.

The Foreign Secretary will also visit the Diamond Trading Centre Botswana to learn about the contribution of British diamond companies and Botswana’s good governance of the industry. He will visit Bokaa village and Hope Mission, a home for street children supported by British Overseas Citizen Service volunteers. And he will also attend the launch of the GREAT campaign in Botswana, promoting the UK in this Diamond Jubilee and Olympics year.

'A challenging new book by the Harvard University psychologist Steven Pinker says that the answer is "yes".

In The Better Angels of Our Nature, Pinker presents data showing that human violence, while is still very much with us today, has been gradually declining. Moreover, he says, "over the long sweep of history, women have been and will be a pacifying force. Traditional war is a man's game: tribal women never band together to raid neighboring villages." As mothers, women have evolutionary incentives to maintain peaceful conditions in which to nurture their offspring and ensure that their genes survive into the next generation.

Skeptics immediately reply that women have not made war simply because they have rarely been in power. If they were empowered as leaders, ....'

UK Foreign Secretary 'Russia selling arms to Syrian regime' Russia's Lavrov,'..this is not illegal..'

'Foreign Secretary William Hague spoke by telephone for half an hour this morning to Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov after the latter’s visit to Syria.

Mr Lavrov described his visit and the public commitments made during it by President Assad. The Foreign Secretary told Mr Lavrov that the UK was appalled by the continued violence, in particular in Homs.

The UK wanted an end to violence from all sides in Syria. We continued to believe that President Assad should stand down. We were not contemplating military intervention. We were in close contact with the Arab League on the way forward: their proposals for dialogue between the Syrian Government and the Opposition offered the best chance for peace. We looked forward to the outcome of their meeting at the weekend.

The Foreign Secretary raised reports that Russia was selling arms to the Syrian regime. Mr Lavrov said that such sales were not illegal.

The Foreign Secretary said that despite our disagreement over the UNSC Resolution on Syria, we would remain in contact in the search for a solution to the current crisis.'

With British-Argentine tensions escalating in the South Atlantic over the barren Falkland Islands, many observers, Via Meadia included, have predicted a similar confrontation over Gibraltar, Britain’s other controversial possession. Now this very scenario appears to be playing out, as Gibraltar’s new Chief Minister had scarcely ascended to his chair when Spain intensified its claim to the tiny peninsula—which, like the Falklands, happens to be full of people happy to remain British citizens. Spain’s new Conservative PM, however, is attempting to cut Gibraltar out of tripartite negotiations with Britain over the future of the territory, much to the chagrin of residents.

Many may be surprised by the sudden interest in a centuries-old dispute between (mostly) friendly countries, but the timing is hardly surprising. Indeed, both David Cameron and Spanish PM Mariano Rajoy have much to gain from the conflict, which promises to distract from faltering economies and stubborn high unemployment (youth unemployment in Spain recently topped 50 percent). The confrontation also promises to stir up nationalist sentiment in both countries, benefiting the Tories in England and helping the Spanish government rein in restless regions.

Gibraltar has remained under British rule for nearly 300 years, and this is not likely to change anytime soon. As long as the Britons and the Spaniards find it useful, however, the dispute is not going anywhere.'

Foreign Secretary William Hague "horrified" at escalating violence. Foreign Secretary William Hague condemned the violence in the Syrian city of Homs, which has been at the heart of protests against President Assad’s regime since March 2011:

"I am horrified at reports of an assault on Homs during the night of 3 February which has led to over 200 fatalities. I condemn unequivocally the use of tanks, mortars and artillery in civilian areas. It is all the more chilling that these events occurred on the thirtieth anniversary of the Hama massacre, in which it is estimated that 20,000 people were killed.

"The Syrian regime’s actions display President Assad’s cold-blooded cynicism in the face of mounting international pressure for the UN Security Council to do its utmost to end the bloodshed in Syria. The escalating violence underlines the critical importance of the UN Security Council adding its weight to the Arab League’s efforts to end the crisis in Syria. The time is long past for the international community, particularly those that have so far sheltered the Assad regime, to intensify the pressure to end over 10 months of violence."
