Alicia Keys Charity Has Raised $20 million and Counting For Africa

Just recently read about Alicia Keys' great charity called Keep A Child Alive keepachildalive.org.
The Grammy-winner has raised over $20 million to fight AIDS in Africa and changed thousands of kids lives for the better! Her charity, which was started with philanthropist Leigh Blake in 2003, provides anti-retroviral drugs, food, and community help programs to those with HIV/AIDS in Africa. It's reported that the organization has helped over 250,000 people!

Inspirational Film of the Week - "Orthodox Stance" Dmitry Salita's Story

"Orthodox Stance" is our Inspirational Movie of the Week for this week.

It's a great documentary about Orthodox Jewish boxer, Dmitry Salita, and his quest to stay true to his faith while he attempts to work his way up through the gritty world of pro boxing.
Salita is an immigrant who faced brutal anti-Semitism in the Ukraine while a child. When he was still young, his family was able to emigrate to America and they wound up in Brooklyn where he started boxing to defend himself. His story is a classic American Immigrant tale, the kind we might have heard our Grandfather's tell when we were young. It's the sort of story that reminds us of how great we have it here in the US. He displays the heart of a true champion as a boxer in this film, and he shows equal conviction as he struggles to maintain his own spiritual principles.

Singer/Songwriter Jeremy Owen's New Album "Rum of Faith"

Seattle Singer/Songwriter Jeremy Owen's latest release "Rum of Faith" was recently released and is available now on CD Baby.

I've been a fan of Jeremy since he was playing live around Seattle's Famous Pioneer Square area with Band Name Hollow. He's an amazing storyteller and singer that manages to weave poetry, blues, and emotion into him music.

This is a fabulous stripped down album. A man and his music. It's powerful and intense in parts, and playful and funny in others. Owen is an up and coming artist who is sure to blow-up in the coming year. He reminds me of a modern version of James Taylor or Cat Stevens with a little Van Morrison blues to boot. This is really a fantastic album and Owen tells us that "when he's not brewing beer or dealing with his "Honey-Do list" he's hard at work on his next album. Looking forward to that!

Inspirational Film of the Week - Vision Quest

We are starting a new feature here at the Babylon Post as we kick off a new year. It is the Inspirational Film of the Week Post. I'm going to start off with one of my favorite films, Vision Quest. I think the title "Inspirational Film of the Week" is pretty self explanatory, but an explanation of WHY this feature is being added is in order.

I feel like now, more than ever in this country, we need to regain a sense of hope and inspiration if we want to see things get better. Reading positive stuff, watching inspirational movies, and so forth can help us all to think more constructively and to feel better in general.

I feel like we have really been dropping the ball in America in terms of what the Founding Fathers intended this country to be.

We spend far too much time complaining and whining and not enough time working to solve the real challenges we face. This is not what made us successful in the past. And it will not make us successful in the future.

I'm not going to go off on a political or philosophical dialogue, this is an entertainment blog after all, and I''m barely qualified to write this, but what I will do is to recommend some movies that have themes that celebrate, for lack of a better term, The American Spirit. Those seemingly old-fashioned ideas of Perseverance, Character, Teamwork, Loyalty, Courage, Personal Transformation, and so forth.

Vision Quest, if you haven't seen it, is one of these stories. It's a coming-of-age story of 18-year old Louden Swain, who has decided to make his mark in life by wrestling the best wrestler in the state, Brian Shute. This decision jeopardizes his place on the team, a possible scholarship, his health, and the respect of his teammates. Along the way to his goal he falls in love with Carla, a woman who is temporarily staying with he and his father, which also threatens his goal.

It's basically a Rocky-type underdog story which I am generally a sucker for, and wonder why more of these movies aren't made today. (Honestly, do we need more doom and gloom for God's sake, don't we get enough of that on the news!?) At any rate, my box-cover blurb doesn't really do the movie justice. Check it out, it will inspire you and make you feel good. Seriously, in times like these, is that so wrong?

It's been reported by Lindsay's Mom that Lilo will be taking a trip to Guatemala soon to do some more work like she did in India, which we recently reported here at the Post.

Looks like she is really turning things around.

We wish her a great New Year and hope we get to see her in a great movie role this year. It's a shame that her private life, in the last few years, has overshadowed her promising acting career.

Rip Taylor kills me. He's a legend and a true icon of campy comedy!

Just ran across a great new video of his comedy on youtube that I have to share with you. I am working on getting an interview set up with him, so if the comedy gods are smiling on me, we just may have that up soon.

Rip is one of the legends of comedy who is still hard at work, doing what he loves and making us laugh. You can check out his new website here if you want to find out more about him.
Also if you have never seen the classic episode of Password where he yanks his toupee off, you are truly missing an awesome live television moment.

Lindsay Lohan Do-Gooding In India

So, Lindsay Lohan was recently in India where she was part of a BBC Three documentary on child trafficking. While there, she also visited a charity home for girls and helped raise the spirits of the kids there.

And I ask, Does she get any credit for this?
Of course not.

Why?
Because Lohan-hating is a national pastime.

Again I must defend Lindsay. And again I am probably a lone voice crying out in the wilderness. Be that as it may, I must say to her, "Good job Lindsay!"

I have read about her tweet (since removed) where she allegedly said that, "she saved 40 children" or whatever, and that sounds a little silly, but maybe she was excited to be helping out!

Did anybody think to give her the benefit of the doubt?
Of course not.

Why?
Because of the National Lohan-Haters League, which most of the U.S. seems to be a member of.

As usual all of these boneheads are coming out of the woodwork trying to condemn her...I don't know exactly what she said, and frankly I don't care, because it doesn't negate the fact that she's working on a worthwhile documentary and visiting POOR, SAD, INDIAN KIDS for crissakes.
We're all a bunch of armchair critics in this country.
Here's what I want to ask all of these people criticizing her...

HAVE YOU EVER BEEN TO INDIA?
ARE YOU DOING ANYTHING TO HELP THESE KIDS?

OF COURSE YOU HAVEN'T, AND OF COURSE YOU AREN'T!! So until you go to India and visit exploited children pipe down and let Lohan do her thing!

Does anyone else agree with me or am I alone on this Lohan thing?

I Fear For Steven Segal's Hair Light Guy's Job

Ever since Sensei Seagal has been shooting this reality show "Lawman", I have been fearing that quite possibly his "hair light guy's" job is in jeopardy. "What is 'hair light guy', and why is his job in jeopardy you ask?

Well Petunia, he is the technician that is part of the entourage that accompanies, or used to accompany, Seagal on his movie shoots. As the moniker suggests, "hair light guy" (not his real title BTW), is solely responsible for lighting Seagal-san's hair to give it maximum "volume" and "coverage" shall we say. Now, I fear that the "reality" oriented nature of the show may render "hair light guy" obsolete. His job is difficult enough on a movie set, where he is often at odds with directors about the way a crucial shot for the movie may conflict with his maximizing, volumizing, and coverizing hair duties. Imagine the dilemma he must face while chasing criminals!
"Sweet Jesus, those overhead flourescents in the liquor store are blowing out the hairline!!" he'd yell as he ran after Seagal-san wielding his "HairLight 2000" with the Special Hairline Scrim. Sweet Jesus indeed.

I haven't seen this show yet and apparently at the Neilsen Rate it's going, I may miss it.
On James Hibberd's The Live Feed today:

"Steven Seagal took a hard knock in the ratings for the second week of A&E's "Lawman."The show's back-to-back episodes dropped to 2 million viewers Wednesday night -- down 43%. "

Bad news for the show but probably good news for "hair light guy". Anyway I wish them both luck!
By the way, for the record, I dig you Seagal. Love your old movies and think you're really cool, so there's no reason to snap my arm off and beat me with it, or anything like that.

Entourage Movie News

Just read this piece from Defamer. It's obviously a bit snarky but I dig the news. I say this because I'm still an Entourage fan (so what sue me, I also still listen to old Kid Rock sometimes...What!!), anyway it sounds pretty cool to me, like I said, sue me.

The Mighty Boosh

I was recently introduced to the Mighty Boosh by a friend of mine, and I have been hooked ever since watching my first episode.
