Time to put your drinkin' shoes on, and don your best green attire, because it's time to do it up right! I'm not Irish, but with the pale skin, red hair, and freckles, I definitely look the part. I do. TRUST ME, I do! (I have the scar on my back to prove it!)</div> <div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; min-height: 14px;"> <br /></div> <div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;"> Well, it all started with my sister coming to visit me in India, a trip which we dubbed the 'Ring of Fire Tour 2012' (for obvious reasons, I think?). We did some sightseeing around Chennai, Mahabalipuram, and then took our tour up north and hung out in Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur. Only one of our days was spent in Delhi, but honestly, that was enough. In our short time there, we were in an auto-rickshaw that was slammed into by a city bus and subsequently mobbed by people who saw it happen. We saw a dead man on the side of the road, and we missed getting to see the Red Fort by 1 minute. ONE. Needless to say, we were ready to move on to Agra. Delhi's one redeeming trait was the rooftop restaurant of our hotel, which was a relaxing place to escape from the bustle below in the market of Pahar Ganj.&nbsp;</div> <div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px; min-height: 14px;"> <br /></div> <div style="font-family: Helvetica; font-size: 12px;"> Agra was great, our hotel was CHEAP and a mere 800 meters from the Taj Mahal, but the air was so hazy that we couldn't see it from the roof. We got to the Taj Mahal, and it's very impressive, and was insanely beautiful, but there were so many people that you couldn't really even enjoy it. :/ Next up was Agra Fort, which was SUPER awesome. Did you know that elephants make a vibrating sound in their head when they want to communicate? One of the elephants we shared, Shakuntala (princess) LOVED it when you pet/stroked her trunk, she would press into your whole body and vibrate her head. She was super sweet. We also enjoyed an incredibly delicious meal cooked for us by the mother of the owner of the preserve. It was probably my favorite food that I ate in India- we had rajma (kidney beans in a tomato based sauce), aloo gobi (cauliflower and potatoes in spices), okra (with seasonings, not sure what it was called), some coriander chutney (my favorite!), and chapati (flatbread). The next day was spent in the garden of our hotel relaxing and chatting with our new Belgian friend Kurt, a truly hilarious guy who kept us laughing. On our third day in Jaipur, we did some shopping and visited a handloom place that also did wood block prints. It was really cool to see how they dyed large pieces of fabric and did the block printing that Jaipur is known for. Living outside the US this past year, I have gotten a better hold on what others think of the US, its people, and our president, and it's pretty clear to me who they want.<br /> <br /> Side note, my nails are more nubbiny now, I broke my thumbnail after accidentally 'scoring' it with a paring knife while cooking. Sugar skull imagery has popped up everywhere in recent years, tattoos, makeup, art, you name it. I adore the DOTD art, it's all pretty much awesome.<br /> <br /> This year, instead of doing a typical sugar skull, I wanted to do a little bit of a different twist on it, so I did my dog Homer in the Dia de los Muertos style, and I'm super pleased with how he turned out. You go from sitting in a row of chairs (then everyone stands up and moves to the next chair when someone gets to go to the next room), to a room where you do the chair thing again. A lady (or man) looks at your papers, writes some stuff, sends you to another room where you AGAIN do the chair thing. When you get to the front of that queue, that person looks at your papers, writes some more stuff, sends you back to the first room (again doing the chair thing). That person looks at your same papers once more, gives you a token, where you go back to the other room again and wait for your number to be called. Heaven forbid you have some odd piece of paperwork missing that the people in legal didn't give you (because they didn't know you needed it- I swear the process changes daily). What? Someone from the office brought you the paperwork within 45 minutes? You want to hand it over now? Nope, sorry. Your new appointment is in 3 days. Come back then. *SCREAM*. (On my fingernails - it's been on my toes for weeks!!) This is a super awesome and fairly unique polish that is a perfect color for slime. I figured- Halloween? Slime? I seriously tried what I wanted to do for last week's manicure 4 separate times. Photographed them 4 separate times. Failed. Four. Separate. Times. I'm human, I gave up...until today. After a few tweaks and some magical matte topcoat, I'm reasonably content with the design. Finally. :) &nbsp;This design could be interpreted several ways- it could be a witch's warts, Ogre bumps, toad warts, or several other things, depending on the colors you use! Imagine my excitement when I was contacted by someone from fashion designer Tadashi Shoji's team to participate in a nail art challenge inspired by his Spring/Summer 2013 collection - A Modern Silk Road. Fashion aside, to be grouped with the other amazing and talented nail artists that are participating is nothing short of completely flattering. (<i>and overwhelming, how the heck am I going to measure up to these nail art giants!?!</i>)<br /> <br /> I'll be honest, I had a hard time with this- I actually LOVE the collection, it was hard to figure out which piece to draw inspiration from. I used my nail art brush to roughly brush the colors on the white base color of the nail to mimic the print of the fabric. I also took the bright green color from the print and used it to add a pop of color at the base of the nail. I know they're fake nails... But I did them for a zombie costume for my sister. I had never worked with false nails before but I couldn't rip up my own and give them to my sis! All I used was a kit of cheap french mani false nails, one red polish, a cheap dark brown polish and an old sponge cut in small pieces. With scissors I destroyed the fake nails. I then scratched the surface to give them texture. Applied red polish on tip of nails and underneath on the edges where your skin would be. I painted heavily a piece of black sponge and cut it in small pieces, let them drop on the nails and then applied with a sponge ( this time a makeup sponge) a thin layer of dirt brown polish. Finished with a thick layer of clear top coat.<br /> <br /> Voila! They make anyone an artist by making it fool-proof. :) I saw a pin on Pinterest a while back where someone had taken a Paint-by-Number painting, added a favorite quote using letter stickers, then painted over the entire thing. When the paint dried, the stickers were removed, and the masked off paint-by-number image remained.
