9 Days, 3 Countries: A contemplation (Part I)

In the beginning…

I never realized how impulsive I actually am, until I was home on November 28^th, 2011 – I was finally back home in Jakarta, Indonesia, from a trip across 3 countries in 9 days *and it took me a month later to actually start this contemplation*. No, don’t get all “WOW, YOU’RE SO FUCKING RICH DEISHA!” just yet – it wasn’t money, nor all the material things the world can offer that took me all the way through South China Sea back and forth, it was merely guts (and 80% of that impulsiveness also contributed).

I mean I was 21 years old (now i'm 22, my bday was on Nov 26th if you still want to congratulate me, haha), freshly graduated from university, already got a job since I was still in Uni and swear to God I enjoyed it so much, recently single (uh-huh)… On October I was blessed with a quick fast-money-making gig, and I had been saving for some time, with all those money, I should do good to my saving before I allocated it to a more wicked impulsive act of shopping!

Plus all these thoughts of: What the hell should I do with my life??! Excuse me, but I’m not gonna waste my time sitting around trying to figure out what I’m gonna be in five years, nope sir (well I will figure it out, along the way). I want to live my life.. Living that wicked 20s.. And like all of a sudden, as if I just got a brain cancer, I figured it out, I want to travel! I simply what to understand other life, other culture, other parts of the world – if I don’t understand it, at least I have experienced it or try to accept it: “I’ve had enough of you Jakarta, for 21 years I’ve put up with yo’ shits, I’m leaving you!!! (at least for 9 days ;p)”

This is the first time I went on a solo backpacking trip – well, probably not that solo since I have my wonderful friends who catered and took me in like a lost little Indonesian puppy (or maybe cow would be nicer) into their inimitable life and families. I would probably reconsider my trip if I didn’t know anyone at my destined country, you see, I may be a cow but I’m a chickon at heart.

I wouldn’t call myself an expert backpacker, not even close to a beginner – as I don’t even own that huge backpack that is necessary and use by every true backpacker – yes, I sadly have to admit I borrowed the bag from my friend (thank you Ivan, hehe) – plus, I always have this thing with OVER PACKING, I’m a girl (yes, that sad gender-stereotyped excuse) and I keep on thinking more clothes are better that less, plus the fact that I wish I can bring my whole clothes with me! Well, the good thing about over packing tho, you won’t be able to shop that much since you know the little space left inside your bag, hehe.

Preparing for the most awesome adventure everrr…

Taaa-daa! Now, If you are wondering, I went to Kuala Lumpur the capital of Malaysia, Manila the capital of Philippines, and Singapore the capital of, oh well, Singapore of course. My dates were November 20-28, I left just one day after my official graduation – and no, I’m not inspired by Into the Wild, as I just watched the movie right after I booked tickets and a few days before I left, and I definitely refuse to die in some random truck in Alaska.

With 600-ish Malaysian ringgit (1,8 million IDR), 7000-ish Philippine peso (1,6 million IDR), and 100 Singapore dollar (600,000-ish IDR)… off I go to the foreign yet convivial world.

My route was: Jakarta-Kuala Lumpur (Lion Air) / Kuala Lumpur-Clark (Air Asia) / Manila-Singapore (Tiger Airways) / Singapore-Jakarta (Tiger Airways). I have to tell you that it wasn’t easy finding cheap flights directly from Manila-Jakarta, I missed the promo budget offered by Cebu Pacific Air, but it was actually a lot cheaper to go Manila-Singapore-Jakarta by Tiger Airways than straight Manila-Jakarta by Cebu (even the promo budget that I missed). All and all, I spent 200 USD for 4 flights (2 million IDR).

I spent 3 days in KL (I mis-booked dates, I should’ve spent 4 days in KL!) from Nov 20-23. Nov 23-28 I was in Manila, and Nov 28, I spent 8 hours in transit roaming the CLEAN and NEAT streets of Sing-a-Poh. If you’re wondering how much my budget for hotel was, well you can stop wondering. I have ze best and ze cheapest accommodation in KL & Manila: my friends’ houses, hehe. I’m staying with true Malaysian & Filipino families, and I’m very much humbled by that.

These people that accepted me for 3 days, and 5 days – and took me around, showed me around, accompanied during my stay, putting up with an-annoying-curly-haired-tourist for days in their countries – were practically strangers from foreign countries a year ago. We all stayed in a strange land for one month a year ago, and just like that, I’m happy to say that they are my family now, my brothas and sistahs from another parents :-D *aaawwwwwwwwwwwwww*

HOWEVER, if you don’t have free place to crash during you travel and you are on a budget, I suggest you to go visit www.hostelworld.com (that’s a recommended hostel search from my friend fellow traveler). Or may I suggest you CouchSurfing? (go ask uncle google for that one).

The perfect shade

Currently go gaga over this MAC Studio Fix liquid foundation and powder+foundation. The shade is super perfect for my skin tone. I have been searching for the perfect foundation and powder that doesn’t make face looks like a ghost and finally rest my case on MAC, after a friend’s recommendation. It’s such a challenge to find a foundation or powder that matches my skin, since I have a medium-dark skin tone – and most make-up store here only caters for the white Asian skin tone.

For every day wear, I use this Maybelline BB Cream and Mineral Powder. The Maybelline Mineral Powder is a bit darker than the MAC, sort of make my face looks more tanned – but it’s not that bad. I am currently in the mood for make-up and buying them like crazy, it’s such a temptation going to the make-up store. I’m currently eyeing for Make Up Forever’s face contour kit.

When you are still awake at this hour, lying in your bed, unable to move or look around. Feeling guilty and embarrassed to the core of your bones. What have you done last night?

You wish that the morning would stop creeping in from the window in the room. You wish that God somehow made a mistake and remove the sun from the sky, and put the moon back in place. So you can crawl quietly, trying to be invisible, walk away and never look back. What have you done last night?

You wish you never met this person. You wish to never be so infatuated with this person. You wish to have listened to all of your friends and the voice inside your head -- instead of listening to the lucious voice from your genitalia. You wish you didn't consume the booze that knocked you off so bad -- the only thing you remembered was the nightmare you had before you woke up. You wish last night never happened. What have you done last night?

Then the morning come, the afternoon come, you come but yet it felt like hell. The remorse, the regret, the disappointment, the shame -- you started to think that death is the only way. Either your death or the person sleeping next to you. You think you can fake death so easily from watching all those CSI movies. Yet all you are is uneasy, stumbling your own silent thougts, shouting in silence to make them quiet. You can keep your body still, but not the guilt that starts to eat away your soul. What have you done last night?

The person sleeping next to you is now awake. You close your eyes, pretending to sleep and never wakes up. That person is now standing, looking around, moving, touching your shoulder mildly trying to wake you up. This person is about to leave, but you don't know because you're pretending to sleep. Within minutes you're fast asleep, again -- waking up a few hours later, only to find an empty bed with a note: What we have done last night, we should do it again before you leave, or in the future ;-)

Maybe yesterday when you did it, you think you will finally found peace and repentance. But even now as your body decayed six feet under, your shapeless spirit wanders through the earth, still feeling uneasy and remorseful. What have you done last night?

Chasing Sunset

I’ve been MIA for quiet some time now, pardon me for my laziness.

Anyways, just want to share you about my backpack trip with three of my high school friends. Well on September, I went to Bali and Gili Trawangan (Lombok) . It was the best trip ever! I spent around 2,5 million rupiah (USD 250) for a week trip. I stayed two days in Bali at a CoucSurfer’s house for free, and travelled to Padang Bai harbor from Bali with bus for 2 hours before crossing with a ferry to Lembar harbor at Lombok. Then took a car ride for another 2 hours to Bangsal harbor that will take you to Gili Trawangan with a smaller boat. The Gili itself consists of three islands, Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air – but the life and heart is in Gili Trawangan.

I stayed at Pondok Wahyu (inn) for only 60,000 rupiah per night (USD 6). I shared the room with my three other friends, we had a very large and nice room with AC and even a larger bathroom with shower! BEST DEAL EVER! We spent four days in Gili, snorkeling and just relaxing at the beach. Oh wait, not too forget partying! I had the most wicked party ever at Gili, waking up with the worst hangover the next day Then we went back to Bali and stayed for one night stay before flying back to Jakarta.

Yes it was such an unforgettable and awesome trip! Would do it again someday.

FYI: If you (Indonesians) go to Gili don’t be surprised if you feel like you’re the foreigners – since there are more foreigners than Indonesians in the island. I don’t really recommend the island for a family vacay, I sort of see it as a party and laidback island – where you can bring your friends and get wild. Don’t forget to travel to Gili Meno and Gili Air, which you can do by boat, I didn’t have time to do it during my stay (well, basically my friends and I were too lazy to do it, haha). The food is quiet expensive, there are food stalls which costs from 10,000 rupiah until 30,000-ish rupiah – but it only opened at night. If you’re looking for cheap food, ask the locals for hidden “warung” or food stalls.

This November I will be having my very first solo backpack trip to Malaysia-Philippine-Singapore, visiting some of my friends in Malaysia and Philippine. CAN’T WAIT! Ttyl.

Something old something new… Just ended my relationship with my bf of 2 years, things just got pretty dull and lots of miscommunication, time to go our separate ways for a while, focusing on ourselves and our own future – thus, who knows if we would go back together again someday. I mean hey, I’m still 21 and I’m not looking for anything serious such as marriage, not until I get my Master degree or at least until I’m 30. It hurts, a lot, but I’m happier now than I ever been for the past 6 months that are full of arguments and unnecessary anger (so please excuse me, if you find some broken hearted poem on my future blog posts ).

Anywaaayy.. So excited to finally touch, feel and wear these two rings I bought from a friend. They have been sitting on my office desk for days because I haven’t been to the office for a while. I love the blue color on the heart-shape ring, and the bird ring is also pretty lovely. It’s so weird how a few years ago I hate wearing rings so much, but now I just can’t stop buying and wearing them!

USA Summer Looks 5: Chi Chi

It’s a nice place for coffee with friends, and afternoon or evening daydreaming. I am currently blogging from this place, had an Espresso Shot with vanilla flavor to shoo away last night’s insomnia effect and will soon be ordering the super yummy Hazelnut Chocolate Nutella Milk Shake or any chocolate drink.

Went out with friends to an art installation entitled: 15 Seniman Membajak TV (15 Artists Hijacking TV) at Salihara Gallery, got some dinner at Kopi Tiam Oey at Salihara and went for a karaoke.

Meet your Bachelor of Art

Hello! I finally passed my thesis defense yesterday with an A! Super excited. Yes I am finally a Bachelor of Art (or Sarjana Sastra in Indonesia).

Oh man, my sweat and struggle for six months are finally paid off. The defense went so well and relaxed, it felt like I’m just going through another ordinary presentation.

Well, anyone have an awesome and well paid job for me to offer? I am a damn good writer, I breathe, eat and sleep with writing Will have my graduation on November and perhaps will be busy looking for scholarship opportunity for my Master degree, or will do tons and tons of blogging

And my cracking nailssss…. Loving this nail polish A LOT! (pardon my fat feet)

Had a celebratory dinner with my mom at Union, Plaza Senayan. The place is becoming quiet the talk of the town and I had a waiting list for almost an hour, and another half-hour for my food. But I have to say the food is exquisite! I had a Bratwurst Pork Homemade Sausage with mash potato (picture below, middle), and Grilled Pork (if I’m not mistaken – picture below, left). The place is so nice, it sort of made me feel like I’m in old New York, and it also reminded me of Batavia Café in Kota Tua. Yet, I still prefer Canteen as it is more laidback (the place is supposed to be in the same group with Canteen, or sumthin’ like that). Oh also went to BakerzIn for some macaroons and that superb Baileys Irish Cream Souffle (bad photos, taken from my BlackBerry).

Well you have to see what I wore for my thesis defense! Hideous! But will post it sometime today or tomorrow, so tired from all of the nervousness and excitement of finally finishing my four years of university – and 16 years of “formal” education!! Time sure does fly fast.

Btw, Stradivarius is opening soon at Senayan City, so that's a yay! More yay is i finally found a jeans that FITS MY SIZE, all thanks to the wonderful European sizes by Dorothy Perkins (pictures coming soon).

Went to Koo Koo Nail Art and Pedi Spa at Cikajang with my mom today, getting manicure and pedicure – spoiling my poor nails. I also went for a French manicure that I always wanted to do, and also opted out for a silver-ish and light color for my toenails. I am loving this Little Things She Needs sandal! I’ve been needing a sandal for a while, and somehow this sandal makes me want to go to the beach so much

USA Summer Looks 5: When in DC + #FF

Something I wore during a formal visit to the Capitol Hill in Washington DC. This is officially my absolute favorite outwear ever! Bought in from Zara. The jacket really gives that formal yet casual, yet cool feeling into the whole style. It’s funny how affordable Zara, Forever21 or H&M and the likes abroad – or at least in the US, and super expensive when its store opens up in Indonesia. Such a bummer you know. And I wore This Nikicio grey pants since they don’t allow jeans – it is really comfy and I bought it especially for travel purpose, however, I haven’t been wearing it again somehow

Had lunch with a friend at Convivium Homemade Italian Cooking at Panglima Polim. The place is so homey and nice, but very little options of food compare to PEPeNERO or aTavola.

I just had tuna salad with too much carrots and cucumbers – two veggies I dislike the most. And had this amazing Torta Passione or Red Velvet Cake with cream cheese and coconut, please do try it’s really yummy.

I also went to The Little Things She Needs shoes fair at Senayan City, 8th floor, The Hall – 70% discounts and flats for only IDR 50,000. Shoes everywhere it was so insane! If you shop with BCA credit card or Metrox member card, you will get more discounts.

And went home buying these…

A supersize weekend

Had a great weekend – sleepover at a friend’s house and became a one day stylist for her, did a little shopping, dinner at PEPeNERO and ended up for some drinks at De Hooi Bar (and yes finally I came home sober!). A great weekend except for the TWO SUPERSIZE COCKROACHES currently dying in my bathroom!

Had this amazing Baileys Irish Cream Soufflé at Bakerzin! It’s a bit too sweet, but it tastes soooooo good!

My dinner at PEPeNERO, I forgot the name, but it’s crepes lasagna with lamb, pork and veal in it! INSANE.

Yet, aTavola Italian Gourment at Kemang is by far my favorite Cucina Italiana! There’s another one in Panglima Polim that said to be worth the try, Convivium – and of course I have to try it, maybe some time this week.

And… Midori is definitely becoming one of my favorite liquor after Nutella Daiquiri at Capocaccia and beer of course.

And something I wore to church today, except for the heels..

A disturbing idea of accessory

In my previous post I said that I need to buy a new accessory. And this is what I come up with yesterday. I bought it from (X)SML. At first I was hesitant to buy it, since a rosary is a religious instrument for Catholic. But my Catholic friend said it’s okay and it’s becoming a trend anyway, then I remember all those rapper wearing Cross necklaces with lots of bling on it. The weird thing is I never even think of wearing Cross as any sort of accessory and always avoid wearing it – as I am a Christian – however now I’m buying other religious instrument as a mean of accessory. I am very much disturbed with this, but…………

“Gorjess” Heels + #FF

So happy I finally bought this gorjess heels from Payless and they are so cheap! I also bought the black skirt for my thesis defense some time next month (Oh yeah, can you imagine, me wearing skirt? Never in a million years! I’m a jeans girl )

I finally managed to submit my thesis, and now patiently waiting for my defense schedule. Anyway, I can’t stop loving my multipurpose Batik outwear! I am also considering to start investing for new accessories, I am bored to hell with my current accessories. So that’s why I also opted out on wearing them these days, and choose going for that bland and boring look for some random reason.

Loving my new blue matte nail polish by Skin Food, it dry so fast within seconds! And on the right one is my usual Face Shop nail polish topped with Etude clear matte nail polish. I bought it trough my friend’s Ox Shop online store, it sells Korean nail polish and make-up, a lot cheaper than the ones in store here.

Be thankful for being your own driver

Been running around town for news coverage, and I’m not even a hardcore journo yet!! Walking and waiting for hours to catch taxis to go to an event place and to go home, the traffic today in Jakarta is sooooooooo crazy, I don’t know what to say anymore, except that I would literary kill someone for a taxi! Been sort of lazy to take the bus lately. I’m 21, supposedly I can get a driver’s license, I did learn how to drive after I graduated from high school, but I would never ever going to drive in the crazy traffic of Jakarta, as it turned me into a chicken behind steering wheel anyways.

Anyway, I’m super excited to start writing my next article as soon as I submitted my thesis next week! Been meeting and interviewing the coolest people ever! Woot, wish me luck people

USA Summer Looks 4: Going formal / #FF

Oh yeah, now on every Friday I will do a “FOLLOW FRIDAY”, just like the one Twitter users do: #FF, when they are referring a twitter user to their followers that is worthy to be followed, but now I am doing it Blogging style. In the newspaper I am working at, I like to contribute on a section called CyberCorner, and I would love to do my own version of blog review (well not review, just a referral) that I like to read, plus I would do it every Friday. As today is Friday, I will be referring you to Kezia Angelica’s blog. She’s somewhat my distant cousin and every now and then I love to read her blog, she’s an interior design student and of course, fashion lover.

Two sides of Batik

I don’t have any nice Batik clothes at all, I only own one jacket with Batik pattern (that is missing somewhere in my closet) – so whenever I need to wear Batik to an event, I borrow it from my mom. Which is kinda sad, because I am an Indonesian. So when I found this amazing outwear in Debenhams (it’s by Stella “something” – I forgot the name, but it's a local Indonesian brand that is only available in Debenhams), I immediately bought it.

It offer so many colors and playful patterns that it took me forever to choose the one I like best. Plus, all of the outwears are reversible as in inside and out, also up and down! So you can get creative with your Batik. I highly recommend this brand for those who don’t like the traditional Batik patterns.

I just found out that Nefertiti Jewelz has just extended their brand! It’s a local Indonesian brand, they were only selling jewelry before, now they sell clothes, bags and more! I think it’s super affordable, and they ship worldwide. When I received my payday some time this week, I am def buying these:
