50:30:20 RULE OF INVESTING

For that, there is something called the 50:30:20 rule.

That means, if your take-home is 100 rupees per month then you will use 50 rupees towards your needs.

It could be your EMI, rent, your water and electricity bill, your food, your transportation, all the things important for your daily life, these are not your desire or your wants, they will be separate, these are your needs, necessity is which are extremely important.

And then 30% goes towards your wants or desire.

This is a great way to think about life, because if you invest all your money, and then you have a lot of money in your old age, then how would you enjoy your youth?

That is why why it is important to balance it out.

You are enjoying while you live your life, utilize your money properly, and gain experiences, Plus you are also investing, and that is why the 50: 30:20 rule is so powerful.

So 50% towards your needs, 30% towards your wants, and the remaining 20%, that is the minimum investment that you have to make every single month.

IF MONTHLY INCOME - 100
NEEDS - 50
WANTS - 30
INVESTMENTS - 20

So from 100 rupees, 50 rupees towards your needs, 30 rupees goes towards your wants, and 20 rupees onwards your investments.

Every year as your income increases, then don't divide the increment amount in the ratio of 50:30:20 again, because what you want is to limit your needs, your wants to remain the same, and to increase your investments.

If they are always only 20%, then there is a possibility that it would not be a huge amount or enough for you to have a secure future.

The increment that you get in a year, reverse the ratio for that.

This means, if your salary is 100 rupees and this year you got any increment of 10%, then your salary from the next year would be 110 rupees, so you have rupees 10 extra.

Then don't distribute these 10 rupees in the ratio of 50:30:20, in terms of needs, wants, and investments.

Instead, reverse it.

Put 50% into your investments, 30% for wants, and 20% for your needs.

This means, out of 10 rupees, invest 5 rupees, keep the 3 rupees for your wants, and only 2 rupees for your needs.

This will reduce your needs, you will get habitual to limiting your needs.

30% goes towards wants, so there is no change, there you want to go for a vacation, buy a phone, buy a car, all those things will happen comfortably.

And you are investing 50% of your increment towards your investments, and that is a wise way of looking at that.

#3 UNDERSTANDING THE CONCEPT OF COMPOUNDING

Compounding is the earth wonder of the world and this is something which if you understand you will get the power of investing.

You can see compounding not just in money but in every aspect of life.

Compounding can be visible in your relationship, in your learning, in your knowledge, everything is a factor of how much are you investing and how much are you going every day, every week, every month, and every year.

Here is a simple way of thinking about compounding.

If you get a return of 10% on 100 rupees, then your money increases from 100 rupees to 110 rupees, which means it increased by 10 rupees.

The human mind thinks linearly, that as the money grows, every year there will be an increment of rupees 10, so 100 will be 110 and then 120, then 130, then 140 so on and so forth.

Compounding doesn't work like this.

If your money keeps increasing by 10% every year, then rupees 100 will become 110 in the first year.

In the second year, 110 rupees will become 121 rupees, which means your money grew by 11 rupees instant of 10 rupees.

Now if you get a 10% return on these 121 rupees, then your money will grow by 12.1 rupees instead of 11 rupees.

This means every year with the same return my money will increase faster and more, this is compounding.

Compounding is the rate of return on the increased pace that you already have.

There is a rate of return on your total base, like 100, 110,121.

How does this work in investing

Compounding means if your money keeps growing year on year, then over a really long period of time, you will keep getting use increments every year, that it will take care of virtually everything.

For example,

If you start investing with 500 rupees every month from the age of 20 till 65 and increase it by 5% every year, and the inflation is at 5%, is it grows at a return of 15%, then at age of 65, the amount in your bank will be ₹4,70,00,000!

Starting with an investment of 500 rupees!

Suppose if these 500 would grow at a rate of 20% instead of 15% if you somehow get a return of 20% instead of 15% every year, then how much money would your money instead of 4,70,00,000.

You maybe think that it is only increased from 15% to 20%, so what use difference will it make to 4,70,00,000?!

The answer is ₹30 crores!

I know you must be aghast, and you just can't believe it, but if you start with investing rupees 500 every month and grow it by 5% every year with the return of 20%, then from the age of 20 till the age of 65, then you will get 30 crores in your bank.

If the inflation will be 5%, then the value of those 30 crores today would be 4,60,00,000.

That's the power of compounding.

A slide change from 15% to 20%, it moves all this way!

If you get a return of 5% on FD, then it's not 15%, not 20%, it's 5%.

If you take an FD at 5%, then how much money would be the value of those 500 at the age of 65?..... ₹24 lakhs!

What?

24 lakhs, my friend!

Your 500 rupees would increase to 24 lakhs,

Which would actually be 9.5 lakhs because of inflation, which means in today's term will be getting only 9.5 lakh which you would have made in 45 years with an investment of 500 rupees every month.

That is why compounding!

There is so much difference between 5%, 15%, 20%, and it changes the game entirely, that is what you need to focus upon, that is what you have to realize is the power of compounding.

THE WORST YEAR OF HISTORT

The term "worst year ever" gets tossed around a lot these days mostly on the internet, and for reasons like I was disappointed in the latest Star Wars movie. But scientists and historians have argued that no year in the long history of this planet was worst than the year 536.

While, sure, there have been plenty of worthy contenders for the worst year ever throughout history, no single year has had more of a measurably bad impact for the decades

Today, we're going to explain why the year 536 was the worst year to be alive.

A FOG DESCENDED AND LASTED FOR MONTHS

While serving as a military advisor to Belisarius, one of the Byzantine Empire's most distinguished generals, Byzantine historian Procopius noticed some trouble was brewing in the air while traveling with his boss in Sicily in the year 536. He wrote of a sun that gave forth light without brightness like the moon, during this whole year.

And it seemed exceedingly like the sun in eclipse for the beams it shed were not clear nor such as it Translated, it was all dark outside, like, all the time.

He, of course, wasn't the only one to notice the sun appeared to be in a mood during 536.

Michael the Syrian, a Byzantine scribe would later write of this period, "The sun became dark and its darkness lasted for 18 months. Each day it shone for about four hours and still, this light was only a feeble shadow. Everyone declared that the sun would never The fruits did not ripen and the wine tasted like sour grapes."

This wishy-washy sun situation cast a non-metaphorical dark cloud over the globe that darkened the sky for at least a full year in 536.

Researchers later discovered evidence of a massive volcanic eruption whose ash was likely a major contributor to the Seattle-like weather, minus all the rain, spreading ash and destruction on a global scale.

Not to mention, it made the grapes sour and the wine bad. So that's an easy strike for the year 536.

WITH DARKNESS CAME WIDESPREAD FAMINE

Basic biology teaches us that plants need the sun to aid in their growth and survival. So not having direct sunlight for at least a year did a real number on the crop output around the world and sparked a widespread famine around the globe

And it's not just that the plants wanted to catch their rays, it was just too darn chilly for crops to grow.

With the sun cloaked in an endless cloud, the temperature of the Earth dropped between 1.6 and 2.5 degrees Celsius, or 34.88 to 36.5 degrees Fahrenheit

But it also cooled temperatures for decades to come. Crop scarcities were reported far and wide around this period, including Ireland, which suffered through the horrible-sounding food depletion they called "Bread Failure".

A PLAGUE SWEPT THROUGH THE BYZANTINE EMPIRE

A dusty veil covering the sun wasn't the only bad thing in the air for these poor people just trying to live their life in the year 536.

There was also a plague or two waiting in the wings to strike on these vitamin D-deprived immune systems. Nobody was immune to this infestation.

It swept through the lower classes to the Imperial Palace. "Symptoms," as it was lovingly described began with a sore that formed on the palm and progressed until the afflicted one could not take a step.

The leg swelled. Then the buboes burst and pus came out. If this same plague were to infect the world today there would probably be a TV show called Doctor Buboes, Pus Buster, and with it a new contender for the worst year to be alive.

With the plague beginning to make the rounds in Constantinople, the city began to stink what with the piles of dead sick bodies just sort of being tossed around into the sea, only to resurface later.

There wasn't a lot of burial planning going around back then.

There was more of a "wing it" vibe around the Justinian Emperor Justinian ordering the bodies from the city.

But all that did was expose more people to the disease as healthy people were responsible for moving deceased, sickly bodies out of the cities. Things weren't all bad for Emperor Justinian though as the plague that took all of these lives and made the city a smelly nightmare would later be named the "Plague of Justinian."

So that was probably nice for him. Less so, for the estimated 50 million people that died from it, however.

SUMMER SNOW FELL IN CHINA AND MESOPOTAMIA

Around 536, the climate in China started its journey into madness, doing perfectly normal things like raining dust you could scoop into your hands. Not only should it not rain dust it certainly shouldn't be measurable by the scoopful.

The Nan Shi, a sixth-century chronicle reported a yellow ash-like substance falling from the sky. They named their freak weather hui, or dust, and said it was yellow. Whether this was volcanic ash or just some random unexplained climate reaction is not known. However, this was just the beginning of China's climate destruction.

The chronicles of the southern dynasties reported on a rare summer-winter weather event with frost in the mid-summer and snow in August.

Summer crops were destroyed. And the city of Xinzhou, along with others were thrown into a deadly famine that lasted for two years and resulted in the deaths of around 70% to 80% of the population.

VOLCANIC ERUPTIONS MADE THINGS WORSE

Researchers discovered evidence deep in the ice sheets of Iceland and Greenland that indicated a major volcanic event occurred around 536. Volcanic eruptions in Iceland in 540 and 547 thrust people into the literal Dark Ages with ash lining the skies and blocking out the shiny, hot sun thing in the sky that the people of the 6th century were starting to get used to having around.

Based on tropical volcanic ash later discovered some scholars have suggested a volcano in El Salvador went blasting off around the year 535 or 536.

Still, others pointed to a volcanic eruption in North America as a contributor to the dark skies around the world.

When combined with the two Icelandic volcano eruptions it kicked off it was adorably called the "Late Antique Little Ice Age."

This little ice age cooled off the planet for at least a decade and resulted in the death of crops and, subsequently, people. Both directly through starvation and indirectly a malnourished population was more susceptible to diseases, of which there were plenty Well, there's one thing that certainly couldn't be claimed it had a bad year - exploding Volcano.

THE FATE OF THE ROMAN EMPIRE

By the time the 6th century rolled around the RomanEmpire had migrated east to Constantinople. And, under the guiding hand of Emperor Justinian, the Romans sought to get back to the glory days of the empire.

Though some of Justinian's generals saw success in this cool goal-- most notable, Belisarius, who fought against several different armies including Goths, Vandals, and others-- Justinian himself couldn't mirror the success due to constant uprisings and imperial instability.

Those pesky uprisings, always getting in the way of success. To add sickness to war defeats, the Byzantine Empire would never fully recover from the disease and famine sparked by the event of 536.

The Byzantine Empire lost between 35% to 55% of its population in the year 541. Once the bubonic plague moved in it did what the plague did best-- kill depressingly high percentages of the entire population.

Historians believe the plague could have been transported by plague-infested rats hitching a ride on military trains during this attempt to bring the Roman Empire back to its peak, which backfired.

The horribleness of 536 didn't discriminate. The Moche civilization of Peru wouldn't count 536 as their banner year either.

The Moche civilization-- a once-dominant force in the region-- were known to be avid fishermen and developers of an advanced irrigation system that allowed a variety of crops to grow.

Their agricultural talents were the backbone of their economy. But the weather conditions in the 6th century caused their pocketbooks to take a deep hit. It was around this time that an unusually strong El Niño weather system caused waters to warm which decimated the fish supply.

The freak weather system also caused heavy flooding which ruined their irrigation systems and devastated their ability to grow enough food People.

A GROUP OF SCHOLARS ANALYZED THE EVIDENCE

Harvard historian Michael McCormick and a group of scholars decided to science their way out of the age-old question, what was the worst year to be alive? Initially, however, this was not the ultimate goal of McCormick and his group of 12 interdisciplinary scholars.

The group came together to study metal usage, coinage, and changes to the 7th century monetary systems.

Somewhere in this thrilling subject matter one probably began to wonder if they were living in the worst year to be alive.

Their findings included an analysis of volcanic fragments from an Icelandic volcano in ice core samples from Swiss glaciers that, yes, dated back to 536, confirming the volcanic event that thrust a good portion of the northern hemisphere into unprecedented darkness setting off a global catastrophe.

TREE RINGS REVEAL CLIMATE IMPACT

The planet left behind plenty of evidence of climate trauma that resulted in a chain of climate events that spiraled over into real human suffering.

Dendrochronologists, people who study tree rings to determine a tree's age since that's a science and not a wild guess noticed some disturbing patterns emerging when examining Icelandic trees.

The rings indicated a period when the tree's growth had slowed, suggesting a significant cool down had occurred around the middle of the sixth century.

This, combined with the newly unearthed ice core evidence discovered in 2018, helped date the time of the catastrophic event that ruined Earth, for a little bit to the year 536.

In researching for the worst year to be alive things weren't always so bleak. The research started by our friends at Harvard ended on a positive note.

While the events of 536 were the spark for some truly literal dark days in our planet's history the researchers were also able to find the moment's things starter to turn around.

When researching coinage, they noticed the reappearance of lead in the ice core samples, indicating that people were producing silver again for money.

Ah, capitalism, the life force of us all.

Experts argued the prevalence of silver meant more coins were being produced, which was a sign of a thriving economy.

What is the power of silence?

Quick disclaimer - There are times when it is unwise to be silent as it can arouse suspicion but when done right, it is highly beneficial.

#1. YOU APPEAR MORE POWERFUL

Powerful people impress and intimidate by saying less.

The more you say, the higher chance you have of looking like a fool.

If you hear someone constantly talking about how great they are, you would think they are a NARCISSIST or full of crap.

Louis the 14th would always have his courtiers tremble in fear when delivering bad news.

He would always say "I shall see and follow it with intimidating silence".

This was a very powerful man and his silence was one of the foundations of his power.

Although you might not be a king, you can still use silence to appear more powerful.

What you say will mean more and carry more weight when you say something if you are often silent.

People will often find you unpredictable and hard to read and thus be more drawn to you.

#2. YOU WILL LEARN TO READ PEOPLE.

If you are often silent, you will often be listening and observing others.

You can spot liars and see through people’s true intentions because they might slip up trying to fill the silence.

When you are silent, you have the opportunity to read someone's body language and see if it matches the words they are saying.

Over time, you can start to notice trends and start reading people based on a few observations.

The power to read someone is a powerful skill you can learn by being silent.

The information you can get from reading someone is powerful and you can use it to make someone more or less uncomfortable depending on your intentions.

#3. ONCE WORDS ARE OUT, YOU CAN'T TAKE THEM BACK.

You don't want to say something you will regret.

Silence is a great way to help with self-control.

Sometimes, your superiors might mistreat you and you want to lash out in the movement.

You might feel satisfied at the moment after lashing out but it is not worth the price to pay in the future.

Serving your ego only takes you further away from the thing you want in life.

Hold your tongue, calm down, and then respectfully hold your ground.

Make sure you have a strategic response rather than just vent your emotion.

Even if your superior is in the wrong, venting your emotions can make the situation worse.

Address the situation properly and make sure they make it up to you.

If you are often mistreated though, you should leave.

#4. YOU WILL BE A GREAT LISTENER AND PEOPLE WILL LOVE TALKING TO YOU.

If you read Dale Carnegie’s how to win friends and influence people, you might remember the story of dale talking to a florist at a dinner party.

Dale was mostly listening to the whole time while the florist would talk on and on.

At the end of the party, the florist would go tell dale was one of the best conversationalists he ever spoke to.

Dale got praised for being silent most of the time and you can replicate the same situation.

People want to be heard and understood.

By being silent and listening, you will make the other person feel good as they are speaking.

If you are comfortable talking less and listening more, you will appear more charismatic.

#5. SILENCE IS A GREAT NEGOTIATION TOOL.

In negotiations, both parties want something from the other.

Long-drawn-out pauses are awkward and uncomfortable for both parties.

If you can be comfortable with the silence, you will have the upper hand in negotiating.

It is human nature to fill the void of silence so the other side will get nervous and can cave into what you want.

The silence will make it appear that the other party needs you more than you need them.

You can also use silence to plan out what you want to say next. If you end up talking a lot instead, the other side can see that you might be nervous and they will have the upper hand in negotiations. You don't want to be giving too much information away because it can and will be used against you.

How RUPAY WILL DESTROY VISA & MASTERCARD

On the 15th of August 2014, the government of India made a revolutionary announcement about the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) and this gave rise to an iconic venture by the national payment corporation of India this venture

I'm talking about is none other than India's card network that we all know today as RUPAY and RUPAY has taken such big strides in the Indian payment industry that in 2013 rupay accounted for only 0.6% of all cards but in just four years by 2017 RUPAY had already surpassed VISA as India's largest payment card with 375 million transactions and by 2020 it already commanded a market share of 60% in India's card market and this put VISA under such big threat that it approached the US government to help them stand against RUPAY

So the question is in just six years how did RUPAY kill the billion-dollar Duo Polly of VISA and MASTERCARD in India

What is the government's strategy and intent behind this revolutionary initiative and most importantly as citizens of India what is it that we need to know about RUPAY as to how is it going to affect the lives of the people of India

The first thing you need to understand is how does the payment ecosystem operate in order to carry out our transactions

So let's try to understand this with very simple

Let's say I have an HDFC VISA card with a one lakh rupees of credit limit and alan poly is this clothing merchant with her account in ICICI BANK this makes HDFC the issuing bank and ICICI the acquiring and this is how the transaction between us gets executed in the backend when I enter my HDFC card details to make a 10000 rupees payment my card details get entered into the payment gateway of the website which in this case let's say is here the value out of RAZOR PAY is that it will help the merchant receive payments from different sources like a CREDIT CARD, DEBIT CARD, UPI, etc

Now since I am making a credit card transaction razor pay will collect my card information and the transaction amount and then it will pass it on to the merchant's bank which in this case is from then onwards ICICI will capture the transaction and forward the information to my credit card network which in this transaction to my bank which is HDFC and requests for approval so basically VISA is asking HDFC system whether i have enough funds and what is the status of my account

So let's say my card is blocked then this transaction will be declined
If i do not have enough credit limit then this transaction will be declined

similarly in the case of a DEBIT CARD

If I do not have enough balance then my card will be declined and

if everything is all right the transaction will be approved
and if i have the required credit limit then the transaction is authorized this approval process is known as authorization

after that HDFC sends the response back to VISA wherein HDFC says everything is perfect and assigns and transmits an authorization code along with its response this way 10000 rupees is put on hold from my HDFC account then VISA sends this approval to the merchant's payment processor which in this case is RAZOR PAY

RAZOR PAY then sends the approval to the acquiring bank that is ICICI

ICICI then routes the approval code to the merchant's terminal and depending on the merchant or the transaction type the merchant's terminal will print a receipt for the customer to so
If it's a website you will see a digital receipt if it's a swipe machine you will get the receipt printed

This is how the transaction is processed

Now we come to the business part of this process to carry out this transaction the ISSUING BANK or the CUSTOMER'S BANK and the CREDIT CARD network charged their fees which together accounts for 3% which is 300 rupees this percentage could range anywhere between 1% to 3%, in this case, considering three percent fees on 10000 rupees
300 RUPEES is reducted and 9700 rupees is transferred to the merchant's account

Now this transaction fee of 300 rupees is known as MDR or MERCHANT DISCOUNT RATE

Apart from that RAZOR PAY will levy a charge of 0.5% percent which will eventually give the merchant 9650 rupees

This is how the payment ecosystem works together to process our day-to-day transaction

It's just that for debit cards there are two simple differences instead of the credit limit

The amount gets deducted directly from the bank account so the repayment process is eliminated and
Secondly, the MDR for credit cards is way more than the debit cards so while debit card MDR is capped at 0.9% percent for credit cards the MDR is typically 1% to 3%

Now this MDR rate majorly includes two variables
the first variable is something called the INTERCHANGE FEE and
the second is something called the SWITCHING FEE

The INTERCHANGE FEE is the fee that the ISSUING BANK charges the ACQUIRING BANK as in the customer's bank charges the merchant's bank which in this case HDFC is charging ICICI bank and then the switching fee is charged by the CARD network to the issuing bank, in this case, it's VISA charging the customers bank and

Up until 2014 VISA and MASTERCARD together were two of the most powerful players who had established almost a duo Polly in the CARD network market of India

But this is where something crazy this is where the GOVERNMENT OF INDIA came up with a disruption using its VERY OWN CARD NETWORK which is known as RUPAY on 15th AUGUST 2014 the PRADHAN MANTRI JANDAN YOJNA was announced

And this INITIATIVE MANDATED BANKS to ENABLE ZERO BALANCE ACCOUNTS with DEPOSIT INSURANCE and OVERDRAFT FACILITY for the unbanked population of INDIA

So from 2014 onwards millions of bank accounts started opening up all across the country by JANUARY 2015 this number grew to 125 million and by JANUARY 2021 this number stood at 416.5 million bank accounts with women in rural areas accounting for more than half of this number and

This is where RUPAY came inaccessible to the lowest economic start of INDIA instead of living a percentage charge like VISA and MASTERCARD for RUPAY charge a fixed MDR of just 90 paise was charged which was 60 PAISE to the ISSUER BANK and 30 PAISE to the ACQUIRING BANK and

10. PAKISTAN

Pakistan has managed to overtake Turkey for the number 10 spot in the world's most powerful militaries. For another year Pakistan's defense budget has increased by double digits, jumping by 12 percent in 2021 alone. Currently, Pakistan fields a military of 654,000 active duty personnel and 550,000 reserves, with an additional 500,000 paramilitary forces in the form of special police which can be called up to frontline duty in case of war. But why the increase in spending? Despite tensions with India remaining relatively stable, Pakistan is perhaps preparing to exploit a distracted India soon. With tensions rising between India and China, should the border skirmishes which have resulted in the loss of life on both sides turn into a full-blown war, it would be the opportunity Pakistan needs to secure Kashmir. To this end, Pakistan is modernizing its nuclear armament and is investing heavily into special operations forces and new main battle tanks purchased from China. The strengthening of Pakistan's military may also be a way of courting Chinese favor, and China certainly has every interest in seeing a strong Pakistan which will serve as a major thorn in the side of its rival India. In case of war, China could almost certainly count on Pakistan taking advantage of the situation to attack India's western territories, forcing India into a two-front war. But can Pakistan's predicted number ten spot truly hold? That remains to be seen because few nations have been hit as hard by the Covid-19 pandemic as Pakistan has. 25 million families currently are relying on government aid as they are unable to work due to the pandemic, and the increasing defense budget is angering many both domestically and abroad- seeing as the nation received a 6 billion dollar loan from the IMF in 2021. Critics believe Pakistan's money is better spent on its people, not on buying new weapons, and should domestic outrage build, Pakistan could easily get knocked off that number 10 spot.

09. BRAZIL

Currently, Brazil has a military of 334,500 active duty members with an impressive 1.3 million reserve force. Given its ongoing missions of enforcing security amongst the amazon states and tackling an explosion in organized crime, it also has a force of 400,000 paramilitary personnel- primarily police forces. Recently the nation has focused on modernizing its military rather than expanding it, as the nation was forced to halt the expansion of its defense budget thanks to the impact of Covid-19. Purchasing equipment from Europe and the United States though allows Brazil to easily overshadow any other South American country as the dominant military in the region. Brazil was also the only South American country to send troops to fight alongside the allies in World War II. The nation continues to honor that legacy by conducting joint training with US forces, and its capable navy can deter any global foe from attempting operations along the South American coast- making Brazil a valued US partner. With the help of the United States, Brazil has officially resuscitated its capability of conducting airborne operations again, allowing it to project force across the incredibly difficult South American terrain and further bolstering its growing capabilities. While the nation doesn't look set to increase in rank in 2022, it certainly isn't going to be dropping from its number 9 spot anytime soon.

08. THE UNITED KINGDOM

The first European power to make our list is the United Kingdom. Once a global superpower, the UK is still a force to be reckoned with- even if its capabilities have seriously atrophied in the last three decades. After the end of the Cold War, British military capabilities seriously diminished, a trend that has only recently begun to be reversed. Thanks to a resurgent Russia and an interest in keeping the Indo-Pacific free, the UK pushed through almost 22 billion in additional defense spending over the next four years starting in 2020. This will hopefully end the infamous “era of retreat” which has seen British influence and military power steadily shrink decade by decade. An alarming report in 2019 questioned the British military's ability to fight and win a conflict against a modern foe and accused the nation of 'hiding' behind a nuclear shield due to its incapability to win conventional conflicts. While British air forces remain strong with its famous Special Air Service wing being one of the top special forces units in the world, the Royal Navy has suffered dramatically- though perhaps not as badly as the British army which has earned the nickname of the “borrowers” for its lack of equipment and needs to trade for equipment with other nation's forces when deployed together. Despite these shrinking capabilities, the UK’s nuclear arsenal has remained in good shape given its investment in ballistic submarines. However, without a nuclear capability, the United Kingdom would easily be overshadowed by Brazil for the number 8 spot on this list, and there are many questions whether the UK is truly ready to fight alongside its ally the United States against Russia or China in a future conflict.

07. FRANCE

The next spot on our list is occupied by another European nation that is perhaps better prepared for the next major conflict than many other powers. This nation is France, which retains its number 7 spot on our list and boasts the second-most powerful military in Europe after Russia. But it's exactly Russia who is driving major investment in the French military which will see its capabilities continue to grow in 2022 and beyond. France already has a very capable military, armed with modern weapon systems and excellent training. Its navy is the most capable of European Nato allies, with 1 aircraft carrier, 11 destroyers, 10 submarines, and 11 frigates. 3 helicopter carriers have also given France the capability to launch amphibious operations in response to a possible future conflict with Russia, or while aiding its American allies in a South Pacific conflict against China. In the 2010s France identified a serious lack of capabilities in conducting independent operations far from its shores without the help of the United States. While this has been a problem plaguing all European NATO members, France has been the only one to systematically tackle and fix the issue, proving it is capable of force projection far from home with its involvement in various anti-terrorism operations in Africa. An aggressive investment into its defense budget sees the nation committed to growing that budget by over 2 billion a year since 2019, and the nation is investing heavily in next-generation technology that will help ensure it remains on the cutting edge of military innovation. Heavy investments into the joint Franco-German-Spanish Future Combat Air System and the Franco-German Main Ground Combat System will bring new fighters and main battle tanks to the already impressive French military. France will without a doubt retain its number 7 spot, but only the ever-present threat of war will keep both France

06. SOUTH KOREA

South Korea and the country in the number 6 spot at the forefront of military innovation. North Korea long ago vowed to reunite the Korean peninsula- by force if necessary. If modern North Korea wants to go through with this plan, they face the sixth most powerful military in the world, armed with modern, and very capable equipment, and an ever-growing defense capability. For most of its life, South Korea has relied heavily on its ally, the United States, to ensure it remained free and independent of both North Korea and China. However, the modern South Korean military is more than capable of fighting, and winning, a war against North Korea, and is powerful enough to make China have second thoughts about any potential ambitions to reinstate historical control over the region. The nation maintains 600,000 active-duty personnel, with 3.1 million trained reservists ready to respond in case of hostilities. The nation places a premium on military readiness, and all men between the ages of 18-28 must serve between 21 and 24 months in the various branches of the military. This leaves South Korea with a massive pool of experienced civilians of military age to call upon in case of war. The South Korean military is expanding its capabilities with new technologies, including the acquisition of unmanned battlefield drones equipped for suicide missions, traditional surveillance, or ground support roles. In a joint partnership with the UK, South Korea also hopes to launch its very first light aircraft carrier in the coming years, and the nation is building an arsenal of ballistic missiles specifically designed to destroy North Korean artillery emplacements- but which could just as easily be used to fend off Chinese aggression in the South Pacific region.

05. JAPAN

With ever-growing capabilities, the gap between South Korea and the number 5 nation is tiny- but the world's fifth most powerful military will not be easily overtaken. Modern Japan stands on the verge of a Constitutional crisis. After its bitter defeat in World War II, the Japanese Constitution forbade the nation from using its military for anything other than direct self-defense. However, the modern security environment for Japan is an extremely challenging one, and decades of pacifism are being questioned in Japan's highest halls of power. Controversially, in 2015 Japan approved the use of expeditionary forces in conflicts it deemed were vital to national security. This was almost solely driven by a growing threat from China, which Japan views as a critical threat to its national interest and the world order. To this end, the Japanese military has seen heavy investment in expeditionary capabilities, allowing the Japanese Self-Defense Forces to better assist their American allies in case of war. Major investments in amphibious capabilities have been a shot in the arm to the Japanese military, as well as Japan's acquisition of the F-35. Within ten years Japan hopes to have a force of nearly 200 F-35s. Another major investment for the Japanese military is in ballistic missile defense, driven both by the threat of North Korean nuclear missiles and China's People's Liberation Rocket Forces. With Japanese air and naval bases critical to any operations against China in case of war for both Japan and the US, they are high priority targets for hundreds of Chinese ballistic missiles. Japan only too well understands that as war with China looms, it will be on the front line of the largest missile assault in history. Today Japan is looking to double its investment in its military, to 2% of GDP, a move that will be controversial to many Japanese but of vital importance to its national security. This investment will ensure that Japan remains in the top 5 most powerful militaries on Earth, but is unlikely to move it any further up the charts given the four heavyweights in those spots.

04. INDIA

India marks our entry into true global heavyweights, militaries so powerful it would take an alliance of nations to challenge them. With 1.4 million active personnel and 1.2 million reserve personnel, the Indian military is amongst the most capable in Asia and challenged only by China in the region. Indian military power ranges from a formidable Air Force to a ground Army and a strong Navy. The nation is part of the aircraft carrier club with 1 modern carrier supported by a fleet of 10 destroyers, 13 frigates, and 17 submarines. The Indian navy is of particular importance to the nation, seeing as it sits at the very crossroads of one of the most important ocean trade routes in the world, and the jugular of Chinese foreign trade. While a robust and capable force, India suffers from a lack of modernity amongst its military equipment. It has a very small domestic arms industry, forcing it to rely on arms imports- and no nation ever exports its very best arms. Because of this, while very capable, Indian tanks, aircraft, and even ships are routinely outmatched pound for pound by its current biggest threat- China. However, things are set to change with the Indian military, as Prime Minister Modi has made the historic decision of strengthening ties with the United States. Historically India has opted to remain largely ambiguous towards major world powers and famously purchased both Soviet and American weapons. This came with its problems, however, as neither nation was willing to partner with India in the purchasing or development of truly cutting-edge systems. After trashing a deal to co-develop Russia's 5th gen fighter, and with rising hostilities with China, India has recently met with the US, Australia, and the UK in a bid to strengthen relations. In the coming decades, if this partnership grows to an alliance, the Indian military will directly benefit, becoming a power that might not only rival China but even overtake it.

03. CHINA

In our top 3 lies India’s arch-nemesis. During the Third Taiwan Strait Crisis in 1995, the United States sailed a carrier battle group through the Taiwan Strait in a humiliating show of force that ended the crisis. When asked what his worst nightmare was, a Chinese general at the time responded with, “The United States Navy off the Chinese coast.” After a meteoric rise in Chinese military power, however, the modern US Navy has been forced to admit it can no longer safely operate within sight of the Chinese coastline. Twenty years ago China would have struggled to earn a spot on this top ten list of the world's most powerful militaries. Today, we aren't even sure if we can predict China won't topple Russia for the number two spot in 2022. The Chinese military is the largest in the world, with 2.2 million active-duty personnel and 510,000 reservists. Its navy recently also became the largest in the world, with 777 total vessels. While most of these are lightly armed coastal patrol vessels, China does operate the largest fleet of submarines and frigates in the world, with 79 submarines and 46 frigates. Its force of 50 destroyers ranks amongst the top 3, and alarmingly, new Chinese destroyers are largely thought of as more capable technologically speaking than current American destroyers- even if they are less well-armed. The nation also has an impressive air fleet of 3,260 aircraft, with 1200 fighters, 371 attack aircraft, and 327 attack helicopters. However, the People's Liberation Air Force faces a modernization problem, and while it operates 50 J-20 stealth fighters, the J-20 is largely believed to be inferior to the American F-22, F-35, and the Russian Su-57. The nation however is seeking to offset its imbalance in air power with a strong emphasis on stand-off attack weapons and a large maritime force. China completely outstrips the United States in the development of hypersonic missiles, a truly revolutionary weapon that threatens the survivability of the US Navy in the South Pacific. Its expanding fleet of amphibious assault ships are a critical threat to Taiwan and other South Pacific nations, and its militarization of islands in the South China Sea has led to a string of 'unsinkable aircraft carriers' that the US Navy recently admitted it could not challenge without pulling resources away from other parts of a war front with the country. A robust defense industry sees China dominate the number three spot, but the economic and demographic problems faced by the 2nd most powerful military power will almost inevitably lead to China overtaking it as the number 2 military in the world.

02. RUSSIA

The spot for the second most powerful military in the world is claimed by Russia, a hard-earned title after facing the apocalyptic decrease in power caused by the collapse of the Soviet Union. The modern Russian military fields an active force of 1 million personnel, with 2 million reservists. However, much of Russia's military is made up of conscripts, despite a push to expand the number of volunteers through economic incentives. In the air, Russia dwarfs China with 4,144 total aircraft, 789 of which are fighters. While this is less than China, Russian fighters are on the whole more capable than their Chinese counterparts, given that most Chinese fighters are based on Soviet or Russian designs. Its ground-attack fleet is the second largest in the world, with 742 ground attack aircraft and 538 attack helicopters. Russian claims a force of 13,000 tanks, but these are overwhelmingly greatly antiquated Soviet-era tanks that have been mothballed and would require weeks of preparation to be made battle-ready. Even then, they wouldn't stand a chance against a modern tank- though Russians have always proven that numbers provide a form of quality. Realistically, only about 2,000 Russian tanks are either combat-ready or modern. The Russian Navy is the second largest in the world, with 603 total ships. However, the Russian Navy best exemplifies the real problem with the Russian military- it has a great deal of equipment, but very little of it is truly modern. A host of economic issues- including sanctions over its actions in Crimea- and an exodus of its population seeking better opportunities elsewhere is placing its future in danger. Today Russia has a very troubling population growth rate of -.2%. The Russian military is a paradox of very capable weapon systems based on antiquated platforms. Its navy is largely made of Soviet-era holdovers, and yet its ships- while individually outclassed by other nations- are still equipped with some of the best missile systems in the world. This is a problem that plagues Russia, as the nation is unable to raise the funds to modernize its military, leaving it in serious jeopardy of losing a conventional war. After it was slapped with sanctions in 2014, the nation was unable to procure much of the dual-use technology it relied on from the west for its reconnaissance satellite fleet, and its lack of drones and other recon assets, as well as very few smart weapons, make it difficult for the Russian military to accurately target its advanced weapon systems. While today Russia remains a powerhouse, most of its strength comes from its massive nuclear arsenal. As its economy continues to shrink, Russia is very rapidly approaching sharing the same fate as the United Kingdom, becoming a power forced to hide behind its nuclear shield and unable to project power far from its shores. In 2022 Russia will likely retain the number two spot but is unlikely to hold on to it much longer. Due to its trajectory, it's hard to see a future where the country will be able to overtake the number one military power in the world.

01. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA (USA)

The United States continues to dominate as the world's sole superpower and the most capable military on the planet. However, the gap between the United States and Russia and China has been greatly eroded in recent years, and many now question if the US can truly fight and win a war against either rival. Its active duty force consists of 1.4 million personnel, with a reservist force of 846,000. Unlike most other nations, however, the United States reserve force not only receives regular training but is equipped with modern equipment and routinely saw combat operations during the US's most recent wars. This makes the US reserve force alone as fully capable as many of the militaries on this list. In the air, the United States is unchallenged, with the world's largest air fleet of 13,233 aircraft- including the world's largest fighter fleet of 1,956 aircraft. Airpower is a very big deal for the US military, and it also retains an attack air fleet of 761 aircraft- notably including the world's only fleet of stealth bombers. On the ground, the US has only the world's third-largest fleet of main battle tanks, but each one is modern and extremely capable. While the Abrams may be an aging design, routine upgrade packages provide improved electronics, sensors and optics, and even armor upgrades. However, this venerable tank is facing new problems- namely that the latest upgrade packages push its weight to almost 100 tons, entirely too heavy for the tank to be transported by conventional methods. Having one of the world's best tanks means nothing if you can't ship it to the fight. The US navy is only the fourth-largest, but it is by far the most capable. Its 490 ship navy consists of 11 aircraft carriers and 10 assault carriers, the largest amphibious assault fleet in the world. 92 destroyers and 68 submarines make up the backbone of the US Navy, and both its destroyer and submarine fleets are receiving upgrades in the form of the DDG (X) program, which aims to produce a new class of destroyer, and the Virginia class which is even now coming into service with the US's submarine fleet. The US is a world-class power, but it suffers from two critical weaknesses that endanger its ability to fight and win future conflicts. First, the US has been completely outmatched in the development of conventional breakthrough technologies such as hypersonic missiles. While the United States was focused on developing weapons and systems to defeat asymmetrical foes such as terrorists and insurgents, China and Russia both developed a robust hypersonics program. Today the US has no usable hypersonic weapons, while both China and Russia have added small numbers to their arsenals. These weapons are a critical threat to the US, as they are much more difficult to defeat with missile defense systems and place the US Navy at great risk. The second problem for the United States is a history of overeager investment in next-generation technologies with often little to no payout. In the early 2000s, the US invested tens of millions into its Future Warrior concept, promising to bring breakthrough technologies to the individual warfighter. Few of those technologies ever actually panned out. Next, the US invested 10 billion into the Zumwalt class destroyer, an advanced destroyer with great capabilities that ended up being so expensive the entire program was canceled- purchasing just 2,000 of the Long Range Land Attack Projectile rounds fired by its dual 155 mm cannons would have cost the US 2 billion. The Littoral Combat Ship promised to give the US navy a cheap, mission-flexible craft capable of undertaking a variety of tasks in the littoral waters of hostile coasts. Ultimately every LCS has been ordered for early retirement due to a long string of failures with various ship systems, and the fact that the ship is rated as non-combat survivable due to its poor design and lack of armament. Since 2015 the US has started fielding the F-35, which is rated to cost the American taxpayer almost 2 trillion dollars across its lifecycle, making it the most expensive weapons program in history. Despite many claims of its capabilities though, a growing chorus of voices have been warning of serious concerns over the plane's ability to fight and win against potential Chinese or Russian adversaries. The US Air Force and Navy both have lost so much faith in the F-35 that they have decided to purchase more F-15s and F-18s respectively, attempting to build up a 4.5 generation fleet of aircraft should the F-35 prove a dud in combat. If the United States is to remain number one, it needs to address critical shortcomings in R&D, as well as stop wasting procurement and development funds on technological boondoggles. Despite these serious shortcomings, the United States remains the world's premier military force, and that's unlikely to change at any time in the 21st century.
