Jono's Boating and Music Adventures.

Carried over from a boat maintenance blog I was writing for my own records. Now expanded into a blend of family, boating and music stories as they happen. When this started we lived in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We now live transient in Mallorca, Spain, but have aquired a house in Bjerred, Sweden, where we will move next year. Our beloved 'Nina Colada' (boat) is now waiting there for us in the LBS boatyard.

The 5.7 litre chev 350 has been successfully fired on the blocks and as it is raw water cooled, the boat must be put back in the river before we can run it more than a minute or so. Tomorrow morning the boat will be on the travel lift and relaunched. Soon the drama will be over and we can move on to fixing all the little teething pains that come along with such a project. It certainly sounds OK and I'm putting together a check list to go through in the morning. After all that I'll take her back down the New River to her home slip on Hendricks Isle.

Last week was a nightmare. Welcome to complete chaos and double handling between mechanical contractor, engine supplier & the circus they run. The vessel was out of the water on Tuesday, June 12, at 11am. Met by Hitech Mobile Marine and Power Source Inc., who delivered the wrong engine. Promised the correct engine by that afternoon or next morning they left me high and dry with no choice and nothing to do except pay unnecessary storage fees. On Thursday 'Hitech' received an engine from the supplier with the wrong rotation. On Friday 'Hitech' finally had an engine (GM 350 merc) in their workshop that they could work with and promised they would work through Saturday and to a finish. It is now Wednesday, June 20, and the vessel is still there unfinished. I was promised the job done in 3 days at the outside. During this period I have oiled the swim platform, touched up the boot stripe to waterline with interlux, patched a few small blisters and applied the name decal. I had 'Govan Marine' compound and wax the hull below the rub rail. Today the engine is intact but the raw water pump is sitting crooked and the mechanic is trying to find a new bracket for that. He came down with fever yesterday and had to leave early. Does any of this ring bells in the boat owners camp? 3 days into 9 days? Somebody is collecting. On top of that there were other issues that I shouldn't have to pay for, like them bringing the wrong exhaust manifold gaskets,.. twice! I don't pick holes in people but this is getting beyond stupid.

If 'Power Source' hadn't F'd up in the 1st day we would have utilised the time we had put aside and finished by the weekend. Then they did it again. They are the first to blame. 2nd is Hitech because they didn't get on the same page with the boatyard owner about opening and closing times at the yard during weekends etc... I'll be back with the complete financial breakdown after the gunfight and an up to date on the vessel's inventory and share holding.

Some people involved with NC2

Cable Marine INC. There are a lot of very detailed service notes from 12 years ago which indicate a very thorough and pragmatic owner at the time but I fear that the boat has been neglected from that point and by this I mean most of the servicing and replacements seem to be done on the cheap. The boat was inspected for resale in Jan 1996 and it was from the original owners, Ervin & Theodora Emery of Fort Lauderdale. it was sold on to Erik Jersted (unknown). I think it has been sitting virtually unused for about 4 years. The manifolds have not been correctly flushed and this has allowed salt water to corrode them and let water in on top of the pistons. I assume to be the 4th or 5th owner of the vessel. I have now decided that I will drop a rebuilt engine in her and go for a very long cruise.

ENGINE

Model - MIE 230
HP - 230
Year - 1986
Engine Serial No. - OA 469237 - 230 Merc (RD?) alt eng# A514072
Rotation - CW
Transmission - Velvet Drive 10-17-004, 1:1, Serial# 13921
Blower - PAR flangemount model 35400, 12 volt, 11 amp, 15A fuse (2,7 kg or 6 Lbs)

VESSEL

Trojan Classic Cruisers 27' Express model 270
Hull# - 270-6021 (Hand chine planing hull) fiberglass
Transom dead rise - 6 - 7 degrees
Waterline length 23'0" (tow speed = square root of 23, ie; 4.8 mph + 20% for max tow speed)
Model# - FE230RRM
Serial# - H021J586
Complete Serial# - TRJAH021J586
Length - 26'6"
Draft - 2'3"
Beam - 10'1 1/2"
Height above waterline - 9'0"
Cabin Interior - 9'3" wide, 13'6" long, 6'2" high (sleeping V berth 5' long, 3' high).
Compass - Helmsman HF 73
Fresh water pump - ShurFlo 220-033 10
Bilge pump - Rule 02-C 1500
Shower pump - ShurFlo 220-032
Bow Pulpit - Teak
Taffrail - stainless Steel
Helm - Teleflex Inc Rack System SH5098
Fuel tank - 90 gal
Fresh water tank - 20 gal
Prop - RHR 14 x 9 cupped (R1)
Assumed Idle Speed - 500-700 rpm
Assumed Red Line - 4000-4400 rpm
Trim tabs - InstaTrim
Electrical system - 12vt DC / 120vt AC

New home coming for " Nina Colada II ".

Welcome to the first paragraph of what I hope to be an enjoyable and practical log for us and our second boat, "Nina Colada II". Our first boat is Nina Colada. She is a 2002 Pro Line walkaround. 24' 6" long and powered by a single 225hp Mercury EFI V6 outboard. Phuew what a mouthful! She tops out at 43mph and we use her for river cruising and deep sea fishing inshore and offshore around Fort Lauderdale, Florida. We are a temporary relocated family and shortly face another move to Amsterdam, Netherlands. Having lived there previously, I was determined to do business with boat tours. I decided it would be interesting to restore another boat here with a view to using it as a live-aboard for a short time until having it shipped to Amsterdam. I needed a small boat with a large traditional style cabin space and a design that was popular and favourable in a much colder climate. As I searched online advertisements in the Mid-West and Canada, I found that Bertram Trojan boats were a favourite with old boat lovers. I also found they were very cheap to acquire in Florida although Insurance liabilities are high. The other compromise was over fuel consumption and I would have to lean toward a single small block V8 rather than the more maneuverable and practical twin engine models. That all came down to the Trojan 27 Express. I inspected 3 different boats and we eventually bought this one for $8500-00. I immediately had it lifted out of the water and had the bottom and running gear cleaned and repainted. We will try to have our initial costs inside a total of $11,000 and then discuss the second phase of reconditioning which will be mostly cosmetic. Because Amsterdam conditions are really no good for our first boat we will need to consider selling it soon. So there it is and now, on with the adventure! Please return to follow how the "NC II" works out for my wife and I and our wonderful 2 year old daughter, Nina. Picture above is the Pro-Line and below are some shots of the Trojan Express as was purchased and undergoing some service.
