Feeding a Black Russian Terrier is not as difficult as you may think.

Good breeders would not sell their puppies before eight weeks old. By this time the puppy is weaned from its mother and should begin to eat kibble. Your breeder should have given you a starter package of dog food so that the puppy will continue to eat the food that he/she is accustomed to. If you are thinking of changing the dog food, integrate small portions of the starter package with the new dog food until the puppy gets accustomed to the new dog food. If you continue to use your breeder’s choice of food, then you should have no problems.

Dogs on the whole should always be fed a good premium dog food. Read the labels. There are numerous dog foods on the market including holistic, natural, organic and even raw. What you want to feed the dog is up to you, however you must be careful in your choice as dogs also suffer from allergies.

As Black Russian Terriers are large boned animals, it is essential that their food should contain Chondroitin and Glucosamine.

From our experience, we have noticed that Black Russian Terriers do not over eat. They will leave food in their bowls once they filled. A puppy may eat 1 cup three times a day. The food is increased as the puppy grows. An adult dog will eat two to three cups twice a day.

Supplementing the dog food with vitamins is unnecessary unless directed by a veterinarian or your breeder.

Iz Teremka Kennel uses Nutro Dog Food and supplements of raw chicken backs, which is obtained, from our local butcher shop.

Remember to always keep fresh cool water available for your dogs.

The True Temperament of a Black Russian Terrier

In order to give you the true temperament of a Black Russian (BRT) it is absolutely necessary to give a background history of the breed.

The breed came about because of the destruction of many Russian dog breeds during the World War II. Many dog breeds were used in the war and many were killed.

The Red Star Kennel was given the monumental task of re-stocking military dogs undertaking this project. The thought process was to introduce a new breed that was able to be primarily a huge guard dog that would be able to guard their military installations and secret locations and a dog that would be able to withstand the extremely cold, harsh Siberian winters.

After much thought, a male Giant Schnauzer was chosen and a female German Rottweiler chosen. Breeding occurred. After this breeding, other breedings occurred and were clouded in secrecy. It has been reported that other breedings between the different dogs occurred including the Russian Ovcharkas, The Airedale Terrier, Newfoundlands and other terriers to finally produce was the now called the Black Russian Terrier.

As you have read in the aforementioned paragraph, serious dogs were used.

Lets examine the temperaments of these dogs:

Giant Schnauzer

The Giant Schnauzer is a:

Large dog
High-spirited intelligent dog.
Dominant.
Stubborn.
Independent dog.
Needs an owner who needs to be the alpha.
Must be trained.
Loyal Dog

German Rottweiler

The German Rottweiler temperament is as follows

Aggressive dog if not properly trained.
Must be socialized.
Dominant
Farts a lot
If bored can be destructive.
Loyal dog

Russian Ovcharkas

The Russian Ovcharkas by nature is:

An aggressive dog.
Powerful dog.
Will guard and defend their properties including their owners and families.
Must be socialized.
Must be trained.

The Airedale Terrier

Temperament of the Airedale Terrier:

Smart, intelligent dog.
Boisterous and rambunctious
Owners need to be the alpha.
Athletic dog that need to be exercised daily.
Very good watchdogs or guard dogs.

Newfoundlands

Newfoundlands are:

Giant soft gentle dog.
Calm.
Quiet
Good-natured.
Independent.
Shy.

Well, since the Black Russian Terrier has a potpourri of different breeds, the temperament of the Black Russian Terrier will vary according to how it is treated from birth.

From our kennel experience, our Black Russian Terriers have had all nice personalities when they leave our kennel. However, if not treated properly from birth their true disposition can be displayed.

By natured Black Russian Terriers are:

Extremely dominant dogs.
· Guard dogs.
· If treated well from birth, and properly trained they can be loving dogs.
· They are required to be trained.
· They will protect their owners and immediate family.
· They require an alpha in the home.
· No means NO and No does not mean YES.

Black Russian Terriers are not for first time owners. They are for owners who have had experience in handling dogs and for those who are willing to spend lots of time with these dogs.

As a Black Russian Terrier (BRT) breeder and handler I have received numerous acclamations regarding the beauty of the Black Russian Terrier.
Why a Black Russian Terrier?
Well, let me share my own personal experience. Being from Novokuznetsk, Siberia Russia, I always admired BRTs for their enormous size and beauty. I fell instantly in love with these dogs. I could not afford to have a BRT back in Russia because of living conditions.
However I always dreamt of owning one.
When I came to Canada, my husband and I were looking for a second dog to accompany our rescued Black Labrador Retriever. I remembered my dream of owing a BRT. One day while reading the “Dogs in Canada” magazine, I saw a Black Russian Terrier show case article. I was shocked and thrilled!!!. I did not expect to see BRTs in Canada! I showed it to my husband, but he did not look to impressed.
About one month later my husband and I were visiting his parents in Burlington ON , when I happened to read an advertisement in the Toronto Star advertising Black Russian Terrier Puppies for Sale . I immediately got excited and spoke to my husband who advised me to call the listed telephone number. It so happened that the sellers (surprise, surprise!) were also Russian. I made arrangements to visit their home the same day. I made it clear, that we were not buying any puppies at this time, but I only wanted to introduce this breed to my husband.
Upon arriving at their home, I saw the most spectacular, enormous, magnificent, groomed Black Russian Terrier that I have ever seen. The first thing that came to mind, wow, this is a dog that I would like to have to protect me. No one will dare attack me. My husband’s reaction was the same. He later told me his thoughts on the BRT. “What a beast. This dog represents masculinity, power and strength. All the attributes of what a male (human being) should be. What a dog.”
When we saw the litter of ten five weeks old puppies, and held one male puppy he cuddled in return, I knew, I lost my heart. That day, after seeing the puppies, we looked at each other, and without saying a word my husband took his last two hundred dollars in his pocket and made a down payment for our now stud dog, Furry Taras Siberian Star . From the moment we had Taras in our home, I always remind myself “ This is a dog, I wanted to have all my life, I just didn’t know it called Black Russian Terrier!”
The reaction as described above is the same response we get from our clients, future customers, dog lovers, children, and non-dog lovers.

I have been extremely busy with the Kennel and the trials and tribulations that comes with it. In addition the numerous dog shows that I attend leaves me no time. We have had added more dogs to the kennel and have had numerous litters.

Puppies Are Putting on Weight

Iz Teremka Kennel has been extremely busy for the past few days. The puppies are growing and are becoming very mischievous. They are also beginning to get their puppy teeth and if you are playing with them, there is a good chance that you will get your toes nibbled on.

As you can see from the above weight charts, the puppies are becoming larger and by 8 weeks old when they are ready to leave they will be a good size.

Their mother has stopped feeding them but still visits them. If other dogs are in the puppy room, the mother quickly displays her protector instincts and gets the dogs out of the room.

Puppies Update

Today is 34 days since the puppies were whelped.

The dam of the puppies Multi-Champion Kalinka Top Model (call name Dasha) is gradually keeping away from the puppies. Last night she slept in our bedroom and did not visit her puppies. When my husband got up in the morning and let her out of the room, Dasha went directly to the kitchen for a drink of water. After drinking she made no attempt to visit the puppies. After I took her out for a walk, she then seem to remember, and visited her puppies.

All six puppies are doing great and are eating soft porridge like food. The food consists of pre-soaked puppy food and canned dog meat all mixed in a blender. The puppies really love it.

The are beginning to play with each other and develop their own personalities. It is very interesting to see how each reacts to one another and to see them play.

I have not named the puppies, however all the names will begin with the letter M which signifies the month of March, the month that they were whelped in.

Puppies Have Arrived

Our Black Russian Terrier Puppies have arrived.

They were whelped on March 10th 2008. The litter is made up of two girls and four boys. The mother Kalinka's Top Model is taking very good care of them. She is a very good mother and nurses them when required.

The puppies are approximately four weeks old now and putting on weight. They are beginning to eat puppy food in a porridge state, however when mother is around they gather around to nurse.
