In his director's statement, Pascual describes Status: Rejected as a deeply personal tribute to his own grandmother and to countless elderly Filipinos whose dreams and longing often go unnoticed.

"Status: Rejected is a love letter to my grandmother and to many Filipino grandmothers whose lives are shaped by quiet longing. They long for their children who left home in search of a better life, for conversations that once filled their days, and for dreams they were forced to set aside. As the years pass, their world slowly becomes smaller—not because they are unloved, but because life moves quickly and they are left behind.

For me, rejection is not always loud or obvious; it lives in the conversations that no longer happen, in the dreams we quietly give up, in the feeling of no longer being truly seen. I have often wondered how many of our grandmothers carry this kind of rejection in silence—from the world, from the people they love, or from the expectations they have placed on themselves. This film began with a question that has stayed with me for years: Do our grandmothers still have space to be seen, to be heard, and to be loved for who they are beyond the roles they once carried?

Hey there, theater lovers! Yesterday, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the media launch for a highly anticipated theatrical milestone at the University Hotel. Biñan's pride, the YPC Stage (the professional performance and touring arm of the Biñan Youth Performance Council), is officially making its grand Manila debut with Mapanakit! Mga Dulang Bittersweet. Originally capturing hearts during its successful community run in December 2025, this powerful trilogy is now hitting the road for a major tour, uniting fresh, homegrown talents from Laguna with some of the biggest, most seasoned names in Philippine theater. Sitting down with the cast, you can immediately feel the mutual respect and intense dedication they brought to the table. Rehearsing a play titled "Mapanakit" (painful/hurtful) requires a lot of emotional heavy lifting, and the actors didn't hold back when sharing their experiences. The seasoned stars shared how refreshing it has been to collaborate with Biñan’s local homegrown artists. There's a beautiful synergy where grassroots passion meets professional industry experience.

The Emotional Toll of "Bittersweet" Roles: Gab, Kokoy, Phi, and Ross opened up about navigating the heavy dialogue and poetic nature of Eljay Castro Deldoc's script. They joked about needing "emotional palate cleansers" after intense rehearsal days because the themes of forbidden love, societal pressure, and rejection run incredibly deep. Despite the heavy subject matter, the cast's chemistry off-stage is full of laughter. The 9th Eddys salutes movie icons, media achievers; Nominee selection underway as editors' group hold screenings at Luxent Hotel

Four respected figures in Philippine cinema will be honored at the ninth edition of the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors’ (SPEEd) The Eddys, set for July 5 at the Ceremonial Hall of Newport World Resorts in Pasay City. Continuing its tradition of recognizing individuals who have made lasting contributions to local filmmaking, The Eddys will confer the 2026 Movie Icon Award on John Arcilla, Edgar Mortiz, Rio Locsin and Janice de Belen. The award recognizes their enduring commitment to their craft and their contributions to raising the standard of Filipino films.

Also to be presented are the Isah V. Red Award, which honors individuals who inspire and assist fellow Filipinos through meaningful initiatives, and the Joe Quirino Award and Manny Pichel Award, which recognize outstanding members of the entertainment media. This year’s Isah V. Red Award recipients are corporate leader and philanthropist Chaye Cabal Revilla and actor Donny Pangilinan.

Cabal Revilla, Executive Director and Chief Finance, Risk and Sustainability Officer of Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC), is widely recognized as the founding chair of Gabay Guro, one of the country’s largest and longest-running education advocacy programs for teachers. A flagship initiative of the PLDT-Smart Foundation, Gabay Guro has spent nearly two decades supporting Filipino educators through scholarships, training and other welfare programs. Cabal Revilla has also inspired many personalities from the entertainment industry to champion the cause through their participation in Gabay Guro’s annual Grand Gathering and Teachers’ Tribute. Pangilinan earned recognition after introducing diesel discounts at his family-owned gas station in Cavite during the oil crisis in March, helping motorists cope with rising fuel prices amid global supply disruptions.

The Joe Quirino Award will be given to director and songwriter Joven Tan, who successfully transitioned from entertainment journalism to filmmaking and has directed more than a dozen movies. The Manny Pichel Award will be presented to television reporter Lhar Santiago in recognition of his decades-long contribution to entertainment journalism. Santiago was editor of the tabloid “Masa” in the 1980s and also wrote an entertainment column for The Manila Times.

As preparations for the awards night continue, SPEEd is deep into its screening and deliberation process to determine this year’s nominees. The organization’s members have been gathering regularly at Luxent Hotel in Quezon City, The Eddys’ official screening venue partner, where films released during the eligibility period are being carefully viewed, evaluated and discussed before the final list of nominees is announced. “The Eddys has always been about honoring the people whose passion and dedication have helped shape Philippine cinema. This year’s Movie Icon Award recipients have spent decades bringing memorable stories and characters to life,” said SPEEd president Tessa Mauricio-Arriola.

“Our special awardees, on the other hand, have made meaningful contributions both within and beyond the entertainment industry. Bam Alegre visits South Korea’s “Solar Income Village” for his first I-Witness docu as a guest host

GMA News reporter Bam Alegre marks his I-Witness documentary debut as a guest host this Saturday (June 13), where he sets foot on Guyang-ri, South Korea and meets the people whose smiles are brighter than the sun. In South Korea, there is a village where the sun seems to never set—its energy is harvested and used effectively day and night. This is Guyang-ri, where people rely on solar energy. It is officially named “Solar Income Village” due to its goal to generate a stable and community-owned income. With the support from the national government, the village is able to set up “solar farms” or rows of solar panels installed on vacant lots. The electricity generated from the solar panels is sold directly to the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO). The earnings are then allocated to the community fund, where the money is used to subsidize most of the community’s activities—from agriculture to sports, to simple meals and free transportation; the villagers enjoy the perks of the sun’s power to generate electricity.

As part of its clean energy transition and rural revitalization efforts, the South Korean government labeled Guyang-ri as the national blueprint and prototype for the Solar Income Village Program. Almost two hours away from Seoul, Guyang-ri is gaining popularity due to the success of the program. But residents prefer it to be known as the "Sunlight Income Village." The sun gives light, and light brings hope. This is exactly what Guyang-ri needs right now, as most of its residents are elderly. At a time when the youth are blinded by the glitter of the city and its promises of a better life, the community advocates their return to a sustainable home.

You would want to be #InTheGrey, not all good, not dark especially these days that more personalities on the telly are all in the dark. I joined fellow bloggers watching CreaZion Studios International and Black Bear's Guy Ritchie film starring Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal and Eiza Gonzales' "In The Grey" movie premiere at SM North The Block last Tuesday. It was hard to miss basking in the glow of the silver screen, watching Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal trade quips and bullets. It’s a match made in cinematic heaven—the kind of tandem that makes you forget, for a glorious two hours, that the most riveting "tandems" back home are usually seen in privilege speeches or campaign posters. They both look good even at stunt scenes.

The real star for me, however, wasn't just the jawlines. It was the tactical brilliance of Rachel Wilde (Eiza González). As a teacher, I couldn't help but admire her "brains-over-brawn" approach. She’s the one holding the map while the boys are busy looking pretty and blowing things up. Watching her navigate the "grey" areas of international crime was a bit too close to home. I sat there thinking: If only my Campus Journalism students could apply this level of investigative rigor to their editorials. As Cavill and Gyllenhaal maneuvered through a world where the lines between "good guys" and "bad guys" are as thin as a tabloid's ethics, I started worrying about my students. They’re currently learning the ropes of reporting on local politics, and let’s be honest, the Philippine Senate these days is providing them with enough "grey" material to last a lifetime. I’m teaching them about the watchdog role of the press, but I fear they’re watching a different kind of show. In the movie, the corruption is flashy, choreographed, and eventually met with a Guy Ritchie-style reckoning. In the halls of our legislative buildings, the corruption feels more like a long-running soap opera where the villains have better PR teams than the heroes. We'd all want to just be Cavill and Gyllrnhaal.

In the Grey is a 10/10 for style. The chemistry between the two leads is undeniable, and Rachel Wilde is the blueprint for the kind of sharp-witted leadership we need more of. But as I walked out of the theater, I realized the real thriller is waiting for me in the classroom. My students are learning how the world works, and while I’d love to tell them it’s all black and white, the Senate reminds us daily that we’re all living in the grey. My advice? Watch the movie for the handsome men and the brilliant woman. Keep reading the news for the unintentional comedy. Just don’t ask me which one has more believable plot twists. The Entertainment Arts & Media (TEAM), an organization of showbiz editors, columnists, photographers, publicists, and talent managers, has elected a new set of officers for 2026-2028. The new officers are: Noel Orsal (President), Edilberto "Obette" Serrano (Vice President), Audie "See" Ochagabia (Secretary), Sany Chua (Treasurer), Nimfa Chua (Asst. Treasurer), Nonie Nicasio (Auditor), Danny Vibas, and Adjes Carreon (PRO). Orsal was the organization's assistant treasurer before his election as president. He finished Medical Technology though his heart's desire then was to be in showbiz, and, thus took classes in photography, singing, and Nippongo (the Japanese language), hoping any of those skills will lead into a showbiz break. In a few years, he made into entertainment media as a photographer. With encouragement from editors, he found out he could write and soon was submitting not only photos written mainly in Filipino. Showbiz opened other doors for him, such as PR and production management, acting in Filipino and international films, and the freedom to choose between being a freelancer and a regular employee. The new vice president, Edilberto “Obette” Serrano, has dedicated 40 years to tri-media (print, television, and radio) information dissemination. Known as “Oohlala Obette,” he is an accountant by training who transitioned into showbiz journalism and later public service information. He began his career writing for Kislap fan magazine before contributing to major publications like People’s Journal and People’s Tonight. In his tenth year in showbiz, he joined ABS-CBN as a radio-TV reporter for TV Patrol and Radyo Patrol on DZMM, while continuing his print work and eventually appearing on programs such as Bandila, Balitang K (now Rated Korina), and Alas Singko Y Media (now Umagang Kay Ganda).

It's Ochagabia's first time to be elected officer (Secretary) though he is a "veteran" entertainment media practitioner whose stints include directing concerts of teen idol Sheryl Cruz abroad, and being talent caster/coordinator in top-rating TV shows. Ochagabia studied at the Novaliches (Quezon City) Novitiate, a seminary, for two years and then moved on to the University of Sto. Tomas where he took up AB in Economics. He eventually joined the entertainment world as a writer in fan magazines and general interest tabloids. His familiarity with showbiz idols and their managers, Ochagabia decided to venture into talent casting and talent managing which is what he is largely engaged in to this day. New treasurer Sany Chua is a photojournalist on the entertainment beat mainly identified with ABS-CBN for some decades now. He is a Mechanical Engineering graduate and joined TEAM a few years ago. Like Ochagabia and Sany, it is Nimfa's first time to be mandated as a TEAM officer. Like them, too, her college education was not geared towards showbiz: Banking & Finance. A network of friendship led her to photography and a dynamic involvement with ABS-CBN as a professional photographer. Nicasio, elected Auditor, was TEAM president for some years and also the organization's founder. He took up BS Marine Transportation but found himself drawn to journalism, particularly to sports reportage and public service. But then he discovered entertainment writing and found it similarly fulfilling. Only the elected new TEAM PROs Carreon and Vibas earned college diplomas in Mass Communication (Carreon) and Journalism (Vibas). Both Carreon and Vibas are seasoned entertainment journos. The officers of TEAM were formally inducted last week by Hon. Gov. Daniel Fernando and Hon. Vice-Gov. Alex Castro at their offices in the Bulacan Provincial Hall, marking the official start of their duties.

Knauf and DSWD Move Forward with Transformative Partnership for Filipino Construction Workers

A milestone partnership formalized: DAISY ZULUETA, Project Development Officer, DSWD; GEMMA GABUYA Director IV and National Program Manager, DSWD; MARK DEWEY SERGIO, Managing Director, Knauf Academy and ARCH. CHARLES RAMOS, Training Manager, Knauf Academy. Knauf Gypsum Philippines, Inc. and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office IV-A CALABARZON officially formalized a partnership to improve the skills and livelihood of construction workers throughout the region, held recently at the KNAUF Training Academy at Libis, Quezon City. The agreement is anchored on Republic Act 11310, or the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) Act, which is the national poverty reduction strategy and a human capital investment program in the Philippines.

Here’s how Knauf and DSWD are putting this law into action: by opening up real opportunities for construction workers to learn, upskill, and get connected with employers. Their joint training program targets both seasoned workers who need skills enhancement and individuals with no prior construction experience, ensuring that anyone eager to learn has the chance to join.

"Our main goal is to provide skills training for the region’s construction workers. This will be a community-based training, so we will pick among those who have skills and know a little or are working in the construction industry or those who have experience. But now, with this new partnership with Knauf, anyone 18 and above who wants to learn and develop a skill can be trained,” said Mr. Mark Dewey Sergio, Knauf Gypsum Philippines’ Managing Director.

opportunities, and building a path out of poverty.”

”Knauf Academy: Forging the Path Forward

Taking the lead in skills training is the Knauf Academy, a training center that has been equipping Filipino construction workers with gypsum board installation and jointing techniques. It was established in June 2022 and is situated along Libis, Quezon City. Nearly 848 workers have graduated from its programs, helping them improve their expertise and stand out in the construction industry with their lightweight installation skills.

"Lightweight construction is our focus because it benefits the Philippines," states Sergio. "In a tropical climate prone to earthquakes, this method improves flexibility, functionality, and safety of structures. Think of it as combining the lightweight style of the bahay kubo with modern construction techniques for better safety and durability.”

"Knauf Academy has two main goals,” says Sergio. "First, we aim to improve the skills of Filipino installers, especially in lightweight construction, to elevate the quality of their work. Second, we want to increase job opportunities. For workers already employed, it’s about gaining new skills that can lead to promotions. For those unemployed, we help them develop the necessary skills and directly connect them with our partner contractors for job placements.”

Raising the Bar with K-Trabaho

Knauf isn’t stopping at training. To create a bridge between skills development and gainful employment, the company launched K-Trabaho, a job fair designed to match Knauf Academy graduates with contractors in need of skilled workers.

"We took things a step further by creating K-Trabaho, which is a job fair driven by Knauf," Sergio shares. "In this program, we invite contractors to interview and hire our academy graduates. At a recent K-Trabaho event in August, we connected 70 trainees to Multi-Development and Construction Corporation (MDCC)."

This initiative not only opens doors to employment but also ensures beneficiaries have a tangible chance to improve their livelihoods.

November 4, 2025 (Quezon City, Philippines) – The Intellectual Property Office Philippines (IPO) Philippines recently granted three, exclusive patent approvals to Pascual Laboratories, Inc.’s (PascualLab) and its institutional co-patentees for novel compositions and formulations in nutraceuticals in a U.P. Manila ceremony celebrating the 10th Year Anniversary of its Technology Transfer and Business Development Office. The PascualLab Research & Development (Herbal) team headed by Reginald Philip Alto, and its institutional co-patentee were recently honored for exclusive patents for collaborative research on flora found in the Philippines, as well as methods of preparations studied and tested under the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Tuklas-Lunas Program. According to the IPO (Republic Act No. 8923 or Intellectual Property Code), with these exclusive patents, the patentees, including PascualLab, have sole rights to the intellectual property for 20 years from the date of filing.

Yesterday at Seda Hotel, fans, media, and advocates for mental health came together to witness a landmark moment in Philippine entertainment: the official media conference of #ItsOkayToNotBeOkayPH. #ItsOkayTheBeginning, the Filipino adaptation of the critically acclaimed South Korean drama It’s Okay to Not Be Okay. Hosted by Robi Domingo, the event brought together celebrities Agot Isidro, Francis Magundayao, Bobot Mortiz, Xyriel Manabat, Enchong Dee, Rio Locsin, Joshua Garcia, Carlo Aquino, Anne Curtis and director Mae Cruz Alviar. The Final Mission of Incognito and why we do not want it to end

Yes, it is so sad that Incognito will end soon on TV. We joined the finale media conference of ABS-CBN’s Incognito: The Final Mission, and even now, hours later, I find myself struggling to let go. Sitting in that Merino Boardroom with fellow fans, press, and the cast who poured their hearts into every scene, I realized that this show wasn’t just a TV series—it was a cultural moment. And like any great moment, parting from it feels like losing something deeply personal. I was excited to watch Ep.113. At Seda Hotel, a space thick with emotion and nostalgia, the finale media conference wasn’t just a press event, it was a send-off. Lead stars Daniel Padilla, Maris Racal, Anthony Jennings, Baron Geisler, Kaila Estrada and Richard Gutierrez, directors Lester Pimentel, and writers Direk Henry King Quitain and Business Unit Head Ms Tess shared behind-the-scenes stories, tearful memories, and hilarious bloopers that made us laugh and cry all over again. What hit me most was seeing how deeply the creators loved what they made. You could feel it in every word from the cast. From Tomas(Anthony Jennings) tortured silences to Max’s (Kaila Estrada)quiet strength, the characters have lived inside us for months, even years. Now, their journey has come to an end and it feels like losing a part of ourselves.

It was more than just action. The writing respected its audience. It assumed we were smart. It trusted us to read between the lines. It never spoon-fed emotions, and because of that, every twist felt earned and every goodbye, personal. We grew with it. The show arrived during a time of uncertainty. Many of us tuned in when we were lost, hurt, or just looking for a distraction. From a bunch of failures becoming heroes, Incognito became a safe space, a nightly companion. Letting go feels like turning the page on a chapter of our lives. As the cast gave their final bows and the trailer for the last episode played on screen, I noticed I wasn’t the only one wiping away tears. Incognito gave us more than entertainment, it gave us stories of resilience, loyalty, and sacrifice. And those, we carry with us.

A Caffeinated Celebration: My Experience at the Philippine Coffee Expo 2025

Kape Tayo! Earlier today, I had the absolute pleasure of attending the Philippine Coffee Expo 2025 at Space One, Ayala, Makati, and let me just say—it was a full-bodied experience, rich with aroma, culture, and conversation. As a long-time coffee enthusiast, I felt like a kid in a very sophisticated candy store.

From the moment I walked in, I was greeted by the heady scent of freshly roasted beans and the buzz (both literal and figurative) of passionate baristas, farmers, roasters, and coffee lovers from all corners of the country—and even beyond. The venue was elegantly curated with booths from local producers and international brands, offering a truly global tasting journey.

I sipped my way through single origins from the misty highlands of Benguet, the volcanic soils of Mt. Apo, the hidden plantations of Bukidnon, Ilocos, BARMM, Sultan Kudarat and even rare finds from South America and East Africa. Each cup told a story, and every booth came with enthusiastic experts who generously shared insights into their processes, philosophies, and love for the craft. Some let us awe at the new and state-of-the-art machines, and some let us have a sip or two. We couldn't miss the ladies too with tiny cups of samples.

Beyond the tastings, the Expo was packed with engaging activities—from brewing demos and latte art throwdowns, to forums on sustainability, fair trade practices, and innovations in coffee technology. I found myself deeply inspired by the sessions led by local cooperatives and rising Filipino coffee entrepreneurs, many of whom are reshaping the future of Philippine coffee on the global stage. They'll all let you savor the aroma before you take a sip. Some coffee mixed with fruits and other flavors delighted the participants while the others preferred the pure and natural flavors.

There was also coffee art for those who love coffee as medium for painting and other accessories for cafe decor.

One of the highlights of the day was meeting Dr. Emmanuel Garcia, the esteemed Chairman of the Philippine Coffee Guild. A true visionary and tireless advocate for Philippine coffee, Dr. Garcia shared valuable insights into the guild’s efforts to elevate local producers and strengthen the country’s position in the global coffee industry. It was an inspiring conversation that grounded the expo's buzz in purpose and long-term vision.

Beyond the tastings, the expo was brimming with vibrant activities: brewing demonstrations, latte art throwdowns, insightful talks on sustainability, innovation, and coffee entrepreneurship. It was a rare convergence of craft, community, and culture—all brewed to perfection.

The Philippine Coffee Expo 2025 runs until Sunday, May 11, and whether you’re a seasoned barista, a casual sipper, or just someone curious about coffee’s journey from bean to cup, I can’t recommend it highly enough.

Boy killed in Bato’s ‘Oplan Tokhang’ remembered: ‘Binata na sana siya ngayon’

Almost a decade ago, a stray bullet ended the dream of nine-year-old Lenin Baylon to become a teacher after he was killed during a crossfire between unknown gunmen and two alleged drug suspects in Caloocan City. Lenin was killed on December 2, 2016—just three days before his 10th birthday. His death occurred six months into then-President Rodrigo Duterte’s brutal war on drugs. “Gusto niyang buhay, makatapos at makapagturo sa mga batang kapus-palad. Lagi niyang sinasabi tutulong siya kahit wala na nanay niya, siya mag-aalaga sa akin,” Rodrigo, Lenin’s father, said.

Rodrigo recalled his son’s death after his family finally obtained his right death certificate almost 10 years after his death. “Sa wakas nakamit din namin ang katotohanan. Ang puso ko'y masaya at malungkot nang sabay. Dapat sana'y binata, 18 na taon na siya ngayon. Kung pwede ko lang buhayin at kausapin si Lenin, para masabi sa kanyang unti-unti na nating nakakamit ang hustisya,” he said.

Unable to pay the P16,000 autopsy fee, Baylon’s family was forced to sign a waiver agreeing to list bronchopneumonia – instead of gunshot wound -- as the victim’s cause of death. In 2019, the Baylon family started receiving legal assistance from the Initiatives for Dialogue and Empowerment through Alternative Legal Services (IDEALS), allowing them to pursue the truth behind his death.

In 2022, Court of Appeals (CA) ruled Lenin’s father, Rodrigo Baylon had been coerced into signing the false death certificate and ordered the correction. Two years after the ruling, the Baylon family finally received the corrected document. At the time of Lenin’s death, then-Philippine National Police (PNP) chief and now Senator Ronald “Bato” Dela Rosa was the chief architect of the Duterte administration’s war on drugs, known as “Oplan Tokhang”. When asked about the death of 3-year-old Myca Ulpina during a drug war operation, Dela Rosa merely remarked “shit happens”.

The Top 12 entries include “ATM” by Francis Contemplacion; “Buhi” by Keith John Quito, ”Dili Na Lang” by Relden Campanilla; “Ghostwriter” by Kevin Yadao; “Kurba” by Alvin Serito; “Langit Lupa” by Geca Morales; “MHWG” by Rob Angeles,” “Papahiram” by Rinz Ruiz; “Salamat (Nga Wala Na Ta)” by Jimmy Ricks, “Taliwala” by Maric Gavino,” “Tulala” by Shantel Cyline Lapatha, and “Wag Paglaruan” by Tiara Shaye. Geca wrote “Langit Lupa” based on the running-around game of the same name. She is also the song interpreter alongside “Tawag ng Tanghalan” season 6 champion Lyka Estrella and “Idol Philippines” season 2 contestant Annrain. Rob’s “MHWG” is short for ‘mahiwaga’ and is a song about hope and encouragement, reminding listeners not to rush through life and instead welcome unexpected and wonderful opportunities. Rising P-pop group VXON performs the song.

Rinz’s “Papahiram” is about real love that sees and accepts both the good and the bad. Inspired by a real-life story, Maric’s “Taliwala” encourages staying committed despite the challenges of fading love. It is interpreted by Noah Alejandre, a member of the singing duo from Ormoc, reon. Shantel’s upbeat composition “Tulala” is about a girl who instantly gets drawn to an attractive stranger despite her fear of falling in love. Shantel, a native of Bacolod City, performs the song with jazz, funk, and soul band Extrapolation.

The electro-pop song “Wag Paglaruan” showcases Tiara’s upbeat and multi-layered writing, diving into the wariness of being emotionally played by someone manipulative. FANA’s vibrant vocals complement the song, which also features Tiara herself.

Philpop Himig Handog is an initiative of the Philpop Musicfest Foundation and Himig Handog, which began with a mentorship program that included workshops and songwriting sessions for budding Filipino composers from all over the country. The Top 12 entries will vie to become this year’s best compositions. The winners will receive cash prizes amounting to PHP 1,000,000 (1st place); PHP 500,000 (2nd place); and PHP 200,000 (3rd place).
