Google Classroom Launches - More teaching, Less tech-ing

When we introduced Classroom back in May, we asked educators to give it a try. The response was exciting — more than 100,000 educators from more than 45 countries signed up for a preview. Today, we’re starting to open Classroom to all Google Apps for Education users, helping teachers spend more time teaching and less time shuffling papers.

Google Classroom provides teachers with a low-barrier, blended learning environment that is familiar to students. Effective use of attachments with the question and assignment resources can provide a robust online learning environment for students with a rich, multimedia learning experience. This online training series takes you from step one of creating a Google Classroom, to pro-level tips of getting the most effective use.

One of the first schools to use Classroom was Fontbonne Hall Academy in Brooklyn, New York. Sister Rosemarie DeLoro, who has been teaching for more than 60 years, had never used computers with her students before Classroom was introduced at her school. Classroom made it easy for her to assign digital worksheets to students in her Italian class and provide direct feedback to help them learn. In fact, after just a few weeks, Sister Rosemarie was showing the other teachers how to use it. “You can’t stay in teaching and keep going to the old ways,” she said.

Teachers and students have been instrumental in helping us build Classroom. For example, we heard during the preview that educators don’t want to wait until an assignment is turned in to collaborate with students. Now, with Classroom, teachers can view and comment on students’ work to help them along the way. We’ve also heard that educators want a simple place to post information and materials about their classes, so we added an “About” page for each course, as well.

Classroom is available in 42 languages (including right-to-left ones, such as Hebrew, Arabic and Persian). It also works well on mobile devices and most popular screen readers. Google Classroom Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Google Classroom is being used by some, not all of the teachers at the school. I was one of the first teachers to use it. I am an English teacher and began using it in the fall of 2015 when the initial trial product was released. My school has a 1:1 iPad ratio per student. Now the the app is fully functional, the process of using Classroom easily allows for digital submission of student homework. I use it to manage clubs as well. I am the facilitator of our Student Government program. We use it to organize students, review proposals, and prepare for elections. It is also an easy way to get notifications pushed to students' iPads when we have updates.

Provide digital worksheets and rubrics for assignments
Deliver announcements and email updates with important reminders
I sync it with my calendar, so I am able to mange upcoming events/projects.

Google Classroom Cons

Google Classroom is best paired with Google Drive. I wish that it helped students stay better organized by scaffolding the folders and assignments more effectively. It would be nice if teachers could create units within their posts.
The linear stream feed makes it difficult for students to search for assignments. A "search option" would be beneficial. It would also be nice if there was a way to organize posts by month or week, so that they were easier to find when looking back.
Students cannot see comments written on digital google doc submissions even when they are returned. This means I use Google Classroom exclusively for homework, and do not have essays/digital feedback for students. This is a big hindrance.

Uri Attack in Jammu and Kashmir : 17 Soldiers Killed in Militant Attack

Seventeen soldiers have died and four militants have been killed in an ongoing battle between the Indian army and militants in Uri, Baramulla, in Jammu and Kashmir, reported PTI. 19 people have been injured.

According to reports, a suicide attack was suspected at the Uri brigade camp around 5:30 AM. Following this incident, Home Minister Rajnath Singh cancelled his trips to Russia and the US and called an emergency meeting.

Singh has also spoken to J&K Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti about the situation and asked the home secretaries to monitor it closely.

Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar and Army Chief Dalbir Singh are also expected to visit Kashmir later in the day, PTI said.

The Hindustan Times reported that the militants had breached the perimeter fence and had entered the camp. Some barracks had also caught fire in what is perhaps one of the deadliest terrorist attacks on security forces in recent times. Seven members of the armed forces were killed in the Pathankot attack in January 2016. In December 2014, ten army men were killed in a similar attack in the neighbouring region of Mohra.

The higher casualties in the Uri terror attack could be due to the large presence of soldiers from the Dogra Regiment, "who had been stationed at the camp in tents and other temporary structures", The Times of India said. Some of the tents caught fire during the attack and it spread to other parts of the barracks.

According to ANI, four heavily-arms terrorists had entered the base camp. Since they were neutralised by the army, combing operations are being conducted to secure the area.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has asked the home secretary and other senior officers in the ministry of home affairs to closely monitor the situation.

Sunderland escaped the clasp of relegation by three points last season under Sam Allardyce. Now Allardyce has been called up to take responsibility for England the thought of relegation is till very much on the cards. Having failed to sign another striker the club are relying on their 33-year-old Premier League veteran Jermain Defoe to provide the goods.

Everton on the other hand, brought in former Southampton manager and Barcelona star, Ronald Koeman, to try and bring the best out of a talented group of players at Everton. So far the Toffee's are unbeaten with 7 points out of a possible 9.

Yannick Bolasie, who signed for Everton from Crystal Palace for a fee of £25 million. The winger left Palace after a four-year spell at the club will have to prove to the Everton fans that he is worth the big bucks.

So far he has failed to score or assist in his two opening appearances for the Toffees.

However, the attacking midfielder has got off to a confident start so far this campaign under his new manager Ronald Koeman. Barkley scored in Everton's 1-1 draw with Spurs on the opening day of the season and also assisted Kevin Mirallas' goal in the Toffee's 2-1 win over West Brom.

Snowden not a 'whistle-blower'

A US House of Representatives intelligence committee report has called Edward Snowden, the National Security Agency (NSA) leaker, a "serial exaggerator and fabricator" who does not fit the profile of a whistleblower.
The Republican-led committee released a three-page unclassified summary of its two-year bipartisan examination on Thursday, which details how Snowden was able to remove the documents from secure NSA networks, what information the documents contained, and the damage their removal caused to US national security.
Adam Schiff, a Democratic member of the House intelligence committee, said the investigation revealed that the vast majority of what Snowden took had nothing to do with American privacy.
"The majority of what he took has to do with military secrets and defence secrets," Schiff said in an interview for C-SPAN's Newsmakers.
''I think that's very much at odds with the narrative that he wants to tell that he is a whistleblower."
In a series of tweets, Snowden, 33, dismissed the House committee's report as "artlessly distorted" and a "serious act of bad faith".
Snowden was an NSA contract employee when he took the documents and leaked them to journalists who revealed extensive domestic surveillance programmes begun in the aftermath of the 9/11 attacks.
Snowden fled to Hong Kong, then Russia, to avoid prosecution and now wants a presidential pardon because he says he helped his country by revealing secret domestic surveillance programmes.
The programmes collected the telephone metadata records of millions of Americans and examined emails from overseas.
Snowden's attorney also criticised the House committee's report, which was released on the eve of the opening of the film Snowden on Thursday.
Snowden's revelations about the agency's bulk collection of millions of Americans' phone records set off a fierce debate that pitted civil libertarians concerned about privacy against more politicians fearful about losing tools to combat terrorism.

'Perceived slights'

Devin Nunes, chairman of the House intelligence committee, said Snowden betrayed his colleagues and his country.
"He put our service members and the American people at risk after perceived slights by his superiors," Nunes said in a statement.
"In light of his long list of exaggerations and outright fabrications detailed in this report, no one should take him at his word. I look forward to his eventual return to the United States, where he will face justice for his damaging crimes."
Snowden insists he has not shared the full cache of 1.5 million classified documents with anyone. However, the report notes that in June, the deputy chairman of the Russian parliament's defence and security committee publicly conceded that "Snowden did share intelligence" with his government.

Ben Wizner, Snowden's lawyer at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), said the committee' report was an attempt to discredit a "genuine American hero".
"After years of investigation, the committee still can't point to any remotely credible evidence that Snowden's disclosures caused harm," Wizner said.

The committee, on the other hand, called Snowden a "disgruntled employee who had frequent conflicts with his managers".
According to the committee, Snowden began mass downloads of classified material two weeks after he was reprimanded for engaging in a spat with NSA managers.
The committee also described Snowden as a "serial exaggerator and fabricator".
"A close review of Snowden's official employment records and submissions reveals a pattern of intentional lying," the report said.
"He claimed to have left Army basic training because of broken legs when in fact he washed out because of shin splints. He claimed to have obtained a high school degree equivalent when in fact he never did."

The report said Snowden claimed to have worked for the CIA as a senior adviser, when he was a computer technician.
"He also doctored his performance evaluations and obtained new positions at NSA by exaggerating his resume and stealing the answers to an employment test," the report said.
Speaking by video link from Moscow, Snowden said on Wednesday that whistleblowing "is democracy's safeguard of last resort, the one on which we rely when all other checks and balances have failed and the public has no idea what's going on behind closed doors".
He addressed a New York City news conference where advocates from the ACLU, Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International announced an online petition drive to urge Obama to pardon Snowden before he leaves office.
The Obama administration has urged Snowden to return to the US and face trial.

Pokemon GO Plus Review: Nintendo's hands-on impressions

Exactly what you’d expect, for better and worse

I’ve got mixed feelings about Pokemon Go. It certainly scratches an itch – that much is evident in its wild success in general. At the same time, though, there are elements of the experience that remain a frustration months after launch.
I’m not talking about the server problems, which have now mercifully smoothed out, but rather elements of the game’s design. Take Pokemon Egg hatching and the new Pokemon Buddy walking system – both require you to leave the app open on your phone, something that’s more than a bit of a pain from both a battery and convenience perspective. If you want to truly progress it’s a necessity, though.

It’s all very convenient. As well as meaning you don’t have to pull out your phone every couple of minutes it’s also a lot faster. That’s a win.

Also frustrating is opening your phone after it buzzes to find it’s done so for another damn Pidgey. There’s a lot of little complaints like that. Nintendo’s piece of phone-compatible hardware aims to alleviate some of those irritations: enter Pokemon Go Plus.
The Pokemon Go Plus is a tiny little device that comes with a clip to be easily attached to a pocket or another item of clothing for ease of use. It also ships with a strap that can be used to wear it like a watch.
It’s a pretty simple concept. There’s a multi-coloured LED light in the middle of the device, placed happily at the center of its Pokeball-inspired design. It’s Bluetooth-based, and it doesn’t take long at all to get the device synced to your phone (iOS or Android – no problem) directly via the Pokemon Go app. There’s nothing obscure or weird about this process, which is good news: it’s as simple as hooking up any other Bluetooth device.
The device itself is of the quality you’d expect from a piece of Nintendo hardware: solid enough to take the casual mistreatment that children will no doubt give it, this simple piece of kit doesn’t feel like it’d break too easily. The design is slick-looking and in keeping with the Pokemon brand – and in that it isn’t at all understated. Wear this and people will know about your Pokemon Go addiction. More discreet players may want to slip it into their pockets instead.
When a Pokemon is nearby in-game it’ll flash and vibrate even if your phone is all the way locked so long as the game is still open as a going priority on the phone. All you have to do is hit the light, which is also a button, and the game will initiate an attempt to catch that Pokemon.

Pokemon Go Plus is £35; That’s as much as the excellent-looking Pokemon Sun and Moon. They’re fully-fledged Pokemon experiences. This is an add-on for a mobile game that’s a distraction, albeit a fun one.

The light will then change: It’ll flash once, twice, three times, each flash and vibration representing a shake of the Pokeball. You’ll then see either a flashing red light accompanied by short vibrations or a constant rainbow array of lights: these signify catch or fail. Pokestop visits are handled in a similar manner – a flash, a button press, sorted.
It’s all very convenient. As well as meaning you don’t have to pull out your phone every couple of minutes it’s also a lot faster. That’s a win. If you have Pokemon Go’s notifications turned on, it’ll leave notifications on Pokestops visited and Pokemon encountered.
Best of all is the fact that the Go Plus tracks your movements too even when your phone is locked so long as the game is active in the background. This means eggs and buddies can be more quickly progressed. You’ll also gain the same amount of experience, candy and stardust for all your activities as if you were doing them on your phone.

There’s still frustrations, however. You’ve no idea what you’re catching, of course, so you could press through a bunch of vibrations and on the other side find you only have a bunch of Weedle to show for it. That’s not ideal.
Worse still is the escape rate – more interesting Pokemon were escaping my clutches regularly since the Go Plus only uses regular Pokeballs. Pokeballs are weak, so higher-end Pokemon are more likely to escape when using the Go Plus. This actually sucks. It’s a huge, glaring error. You also only get one shot to catch Pokemon with it – if your first ball fails, they flee. In this regard the device actually makes things a little harder.
Hopefully a setting to adjust this can be patched in, but as it stands now this makes the Go Plus largely useless for catching higher level Pokemon. Other things won’t be patchable, such as how bright sunlight makes the weak LED invisible. These are the downsides. They’re numerous but mostly small and may be deal breakers for some, but for many players I imagine the step tracking alone will be enough of a feature to sell this add-on.

This is strictly for the most dedicated trainers, but for those who can’t get enough this is a decent if expensive add-on.

But then there’s the price. Pokemon Go Plus is £35; That’s as much as the excellent-looking Pokemon Sun and Moon are set to cost on Nintendo 3DS in a few months’ time. They’re fully-fledged Pokemon experiences with catching, trading, battling, epic storylines and all that jazz. This is an add-on for a mobile game that’s a distraction, albeit a fun one. Further, it’s an add-on designed to trivialize a game that’s already pretty trivial to begin with. More than anything, the Go Plus makes even stronger the case that Pokemon Go addicts should look into picking up a 3DS and a proper Pokemon game – but that’s an article for another time.
The Pokemon Go Plus is so simple it’s actually rather difficult to review. It does exactly what you’d expect. Are you a hardcore Pokemon Go player? If so, the Go Plus will provide a convenient way to keep the game even closer to you at all times without draining your battery as fiercely as actively using your phone will. It’s expensive, but how much value do you put on being able to count steps and catch Pokemon more quickly and for longer? This is strictly for the most dedicated trainers, but for those who can’t get enough this is a decent if expensive add-on.

Why wearables will disappear

The flood of wearable technology in the past few years has a large extent been a battle for the real estate of consumer wrists and more recently the ear. But this has distorted the bigger potential. Forget the debate as to whether the smart watches are here to stay or a passing fashion. There have been far more significant wearable technologies, quietly getting on with changing the world over the last decade, receiving far less fanfare.

So what are these quiet disruptors? Much of this has been in areas like healthcare where the ability to monitor and manage critical health issues using small worn devices have been quietly continuing to grow. This is liberating health services to be possible on the go, relieving pressure on hospitals and giving more and more patients the benefit of treatments in the comfort of their homes and a return to active lives. The Keeogo is a great example of this, providing augmented strength to enhance active lifestyle of people with mobility issues on a much larger scale than most wearables.

In the entertainment industry it has also made amusement parks cash free, and smart. Disney developed their MagicBand as the one stop ticket around their amusement parks, becoming an easy payment system removing the need for wallets and tickets, while providing then the ever valuable user data.
In the automotive world, electronic entry has become the standard don’t even think of this as a form of wearable technology making life simpler, yet the majority of us still use a mechanical lock and key for our front door. What is interesting is how far we can trust wearable technology… just not with our homes.
These types of example often go unnoticed. So while there will always be some people that are interested to know themselves better through hard stats and data from fitness trackers monitoring their everyday lives, this has not translated to the masses.
Many often seem like technology looking for a solution. The parody ‘beat tweeter’ merges wearable with social media – a ring that will post your final social media message to the world when it monitors your demise. While this deliberately mocks the bad ideas in the category it also highlights the errors of looking for uses of the technology rather than starting with genuine user needs.
On the serious side there have been lessons learnt. Nike and Google both entered with great fanfare, only to exit very publicly, both suffering difficulties faced by non-hardware focussed businesses entering a consumer hardware market.
Many products in the current generation of devices have been battling with the same issues of technical constraints, trying to make smaller and smaller devices but with longer and longer wearing times. The focus is on data gathering rather than making sense of the data and turning this into action. Wanting larger and larger screens, and the battle to provide some kind of meaningful user interaction with a device that is dependent on a smartphone.
So it’s no wonder that all the hype peaked around a year ago. But what are the lessons can we learn to better approach the next generation of wearable technology?
Recreation V’s Need
Generic ‘recreation’ wearables have been dominant, aiming to find that big mass market appeal, epitomised by the very late arrival of Apple to the party. Unfortunately ‘recreational’ interest is as far as that need goes, attracting the experimenters and early adopters. In contrast, no one can question the benefits of the wearable heart monitor for high risk patients, as being developed by Philips, which connects the system direct to their doctor. The more clear the user need the better the value it will provide and reason to stay.
Start specific not generic
It is the specific, not generic applications that are best fulfilling their market needs, from Disney’s MagicBand to heart monitors; each is designed around their specific needs and function. Having one size fits all may work in smartphones, but in wearables this is only driving compromises. Not all applications need a screen, some want long battery life. Should it be wrist based or worn entirely differently? Too much compromise is required with current technologies to cover all in one. While in the future they may merge, it’s too soon to say yet.

The fashion distraction
While there will continue to be a desire for new consumer facing wearables, it seems that a saturation level has been reached. While that ‘killer benefit’ is still being searched for, far too much emphasis is placed on making glamorous, premium watch and jewellery like devices. These are purely exercises in aesthetic design, seemingly trying cover over the challenge around unclear purpose. Rejecting this consumer fashion approach and thinking about everyday applications in the workplace, industry, healthcare or education presents more purposeful applications. What business wouldn’t want to improve staff safety, performance, or even happiness? It’s only then that wearables can be designed with purpose and context in mind.

Short term not long term
Too many wearable devices demand continuous or long term use, which bring significant challenges to power and usability. However, taking the opposite focus and thinking short term can liberate. where there is simplicity to purpose and use, and doing that job well for a short period. L’Oreals UV detection plaster is a great example of this, a short use with a clear and focussed benefit. Similarly at Kinneir Dufort we helped develop Ambicare, a short term wearable light therapy device for skin cancer treatment in the patient’s own home.

Break the product paradigm
Much of the current business models have focussed on the traditional hardware selling model. However, this drives maximum value from high end purchase prices, hence the trend toward premium smartwatches. To open up the potential we need to instead think about the product at a service. How can it be the critical link to being part of future services? We need to break the objectification of wearables on wrists and even the latest spotlight on hearables. Using wearables as enablers of a service provides rich and fruitful ground. Building working prototypes and experimenting with user centric thinking will develop better solutions that closed development approaches. While Google glass was in essence a beta launched ‘explorer edition’, in many ways it was too fully formed and appeared much more as a final product.

Connect the dots
Many of the early wearables work essentially in isolation between the device, user and smartphone. Looking from a system approach creates greater potential, placing wearables as just an element of the bigger IoT world. The opportunity is to think about the role they can play, connecting the user to spaces, services and other smart products. Taking this bigger view turns them into an enabler not the end goal. The more collaborative approach taken by Nest, where they work with various smartwatches, is a great example.

Much of the success of future wearables will come down to the ability to reflect on what has happened in the last 5 year and respond with radical new big ideas rather than continue on the same path. The future will require a total rethink in attitude, application and appearance. Breaking one or more of the rules that have defined the category to date with be crucial to success. Focussing on genuine need, as often best demonstrated in the medical industry. Targeting specific applications and not trying to be a ‘swiss-army’ style wearable. Thinking short term uses with high value data, in essence the wearable could become a commodity consumable much like one a day contact lens. It’s time to reject the fashion led thinking and experiment more to prove value in new spaces and applications in professional contexts.

In many ways we’ve been looking at it all wrong. The future is to make wearables seamless and invisible in the everyday, quite the opposite of the fashion led status objects. These devices will be simple, like smart keys, insoles, packaging, clothing, implants and plasters embedded and hidden in the fabric of everyday. Looking on the surface, they will disappear from sight. Beneath the surface they will fulfil specific needs working in connected systems making life more efficient, safer, more automated and more personal.
Wearables are most definitely the future, they just need to disappear.

USA Work Study paid internship options are a big draw for international students interested in pursuing a master degree in the United States. These internships provide both real life learning in conjunction with their studies at the university, as well as earning money to help pay for tuition and living arrangements. What makes HTIR options unique from most other U.S. study abroad programs is that the universities HTIR works with have establish mandatory curricular practical training (CPT) options, which legally allow students to being working in off-campus paid employment immediately. In order to participate in the CPT internship, the job must be an integral part of the program or class for which they are studying.

Students participate in a CPT internship program are able to not only gain valuable work experience, but also are able to earn U.S. wages to help pay for their educational and living expenses.

How does a CPT internship work?

As mentioned above, the student needs to be enrolled in a mandatory CPT class or program. Otherwise, any off-campus employment is illegal.

Although it is up to students to search and apply for their internship position, each university has a career counselor on site to assist the students. The counselor can help with resume writing, interview skills, as well assisting the students in searching out employment opportunities via the school's job network, newspapers, the Internet, job fairs or through other placement opportunities.

Prior to working in an off-campus internship, students must be enrolled in school, have started classes and have obtained a Social Security number. This can sometimes be a "catch 22" situation. Because often, when applying for employment, the company asks for a social security number. Yet, in order to obtain the SS number, the international student needs to have an offer of employment letter. There are ways to get around this issue, so be sure to work with the career counselor at your school.

Once students have applied for their Social Security number, they can immediately begin working, even though they have not yet received their SS# in the mail. It may take two to three weeks to receive the actual number.

Most students traditionally are able to find employment within a couple of weeks of starting their search. Students are encouraged to apply for entry-level jobs paying between $8 and $12 an hour, so they can get some U.S. work experience before they apply for the more professional jobs. These entry level jobs are traditionally below the skill level for which students are actually qualified to perform. However, it is important for students to understand the American job place before they try and get the better job. We have seen students not understand the U.S. job culture and then lose really great jobs because they made unintentional social or cultural mistakes or illegal actions.

In the United States, a full time work week is up to 40 hours. “Cyber security legend” John McAfee has bashed the policies of American government’s stance on encryption. Taking Apple’s side, McAfee has offered FBI to allow him to decrypt the iPhone, free of charge. He called it a way to avoid the beginning of creation of backdoor in the devices.

he recent feud between Apple and FBI is taking new turns every day. While technology companies like Google, Facebook, Whats App and Apple have expressed their support in favor of Apple, another tech pioneer is ready to help the iPhone-maker and FBI in a different manner.

Cyber security expert and US presidential candidate John McAfee has written an op-ed for Business Insider, expressing his views regarding this matter. Mr. McAfee believes that he should be allowed to decrypt the phone — free of charge — along with his team. But, why is he willing to do this? He called it a way to avoid the beginning of creation of backdoor in the devices.

“So here is my offer to the FBI. I will, free of charge, decrypt the information on the San Bernardino phone, with my team. We will primarily use social engineering, and it will take us three weeks. If you accept my offer, then you will not need to ask Apple to place a backdoor in its product, which will be the beginning of the end of America,” he writes.

In his op-ed, before making the offer, the cyber security legend doesn’t hesitate from expressing his concern. He says that even after the years of debate about the negative impacts of back doors, the government has chosen to move ahead on a scary path.

“The FBI, in a laughable and bizarre twist of logic, said the back door would be used only once and only in the San Bernardino case,” he continues.

Calling it a black day and a beginning of the end of the US as a world power, he blames the government for pushing its people into the horizon where a cyber war is ticking like a time bomb.

It would be interesting to note the final outcome of this conflict as its effects are going to resonate in the political and technology arena for a long time.

The main selling point of ODiN Aurora, it seems, is the reduction of carpal tunnel. With a traditional mouse, the wrist may be angled and the thumb typically "grips" the mouse. With the ODiN Aurora, the hand rests flat on the table or any other surface the virtual mouse is projected.

The ODiN Aurora projects a virtual mouse onto a flat surface measuring 3.15 inches square. This projection supports multipoint controls and includes both the left- and right-click buttons, a mouse wheel in the form of a triangle, and what appears to be a thumb button. The ODiN Aurora can do anything a regular mouse can do, including scrolling, dragging windows, move the cursor and so on. The projection can even perform zooming in and out.

Serafim's Kickstarter page reassured backers that they shouldn't be concerned about their privacy while using gesture controls, as the device does not include any type of camera that can record the user's hand movements. The company suggested that the device can be used in confidential business meetings and other similar scenarios worry-free.

The actual ODiN Aurora device measures 1.6 x 2 inches and connects to a desktop or laptop via USB. The device contains a laser projection display, an infrared sensor for signal detection, a 90 degree infrared beam and two LED-based "eyes" that provide interaction feedback. Thanks to its small size, the device takes up less space than a traditional mouse.

The project's FAQ revealed that the projection area cannot be reduced or enlarged, nor can the color of the projection be changed (currently it's red). The projection area must also be flat: it doesn't work well on uneven surfaces. The device currently only supports Windows and Mac, the FAQ added.

Does the ODiN Aurora projection mouse seem like a good idea? Anonymous Brings Down 20 Thai Prison Websites

Anonymous group have taken down 20 websites belonging to the Thai prison system on Thursday in protest against death sentences passed by a local court in a controversial case earlier in January. The same hacking crew were the one also launched DDoS attacks against 300 Thai court websites.

This attack is regarding the death sentences given to two Myanmar men for the murder of two British tourists on Koh Tao. It was reported that the 22-year-old Myanmar men were tortured by police and forced to confess to a crime they did not commit and then were railroaded in a botched investigation using questionable DNA evidence.

In a post on their Facebook page the hacktivists from the Blink Hackers Group took responsibility for the attack and listed several hashtags relating to the case of two British tourists murder on the Thai island of Ko Tao.

Having problems with the update? Here’s a quick guide to help you out.

First up, if you don’t see WhatsApp Web on your phone, go to the respective store and perform an update. WhatsApp Web is available for all platforms except iOS no thanks to Apple’s “platform limitations”. So yes, your Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and even Nokia S60 devices are all supported.

Make sure you have the latest version of WhatsApp installed on your Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry or Nokia S60 phone.

Open WhatsApp on your mobile phone. Tap on the menu button, look for “WhatsApp Web”, and tap on it.

Just like on your mobile device, new files/pictures and audio clips will automatically load when someone sends them to you. Click into a picture and you will be able to download it to your computer.

Whatever you see on the web will be almost identical to whatever that’s on your phone. This means that you can get your contact lists right from WhatsApp Web to start a new conversation. Anonymous v/s The Lizard Squad

It was the sad Christmas day for gamers all around the world!! A lot of people get new PlayStations and Xboxes on Christmas, but this Christmas they bought the game, popped it into the console for online gaming, and what they found? Oh Crap! I can't log on.

It was the notorious hacker group "Lizard Squad" who claimed the responsibility for taking down PlayStation Network, saying it has made unavailable both networks with apparent Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks — intentionally overloading servers by sending a flood of bogus web traffic, which made logging into thePlayStation Network and Xbox Live difficult for most users.

Now Anonymous has declared war against Lizard Group, warning that "now you are all going down." Recently, in response to Lizard Squad launching DDoS attacks on the Tor network, the international activist group Anonymous has leaked the personal details of one of the group's alleged members, warning the hacker collective "Lizard Squad" to "stand down" and stop attacking Tor.

Earlier after the big outage for both Xbox Live and Playstation Network services, both Sony and Microsoft acknowledged the problem, saying that their security teams were working to resolve the issue and get the networks back online.

"We are aware some users are unable to sign into Xbox Live. Our teams are working to resolve the issue. Visit xbox.com/support for status updates," said Sean McCarthy, general manager of Microsoft's Xbox Product Services in a statement to CNN. "We don't share info on the root cause of specific issues."

"We are aware that there have been issues reported with PSN," tweeted Sony's Ask PlayStation account on Christmas Eve. "Thanks for your patience as we investigate."

Giving pause to the attacks on PSN and Xbox live, Lizard Squad said in a tweet that "All your onions are belong to us," referring to Tor's onion logo, and later tweeted that the Tor network is only used by "hackers, miscreants and pedophiles."

The Tor Project released a statement about the attacks, saying "we don't expect any anonymity or performance effects based on what we've seen so far." It said the attackers attempted a "Sybil attack" where "the attackers have signed up many new relays in hopes of becoming a large fraction of the network."

"But even though they are running thousands of new relays, their relays currently make up less than 1% of the Tor network by capacity," it added. "We are working now to remove these relays from the network before they become a threat, and we don't expect any anonymity or performance effects based on what we've seen so far." So hopefully this gets nipped in the trollish bud before anonymity is affected."

Anonymous‏ group warned Lizard Squad in a tweet, saying "People need that service because of corrupt governments." Later, the group confirmed that it was tracking down members of Lizard Squad.

However, the details revealed by the group are yet not confirmed to be legitimate, Anonymous tweeted a link which appears to contain the personal details, including full name, address, phone numbers and passwords, of one of the supposed members behind Lizard Squad.

The group posted a screenshot that appears to be a text conversation between one of its members and one of the members behind Lizard Squad, in which the Lizard Squad member ask the Anonymous‏' member to stop the attacks against them and for their family to be left alone, but Anonymous‏ said in a tweet that they'll not stop.

Whereas, a member of Lizard Squad has claimed that the conversation between Anonymous‏ member and Lizard Squad member is fake.

The group also posted a couple of videos to YouTube in which it -- in its typical dramatic style -- attacked Lizard Squad.

Hands On & Review: Micromax Yu Yureka First Impressions

The other day we witnessed the launch of a killer device, Yureka by ‘YU’ which is the online brand of Micromax Informatics. The device is priced aggressively at Rs. 8,999, which is intended to kill the sale of devices like the Xiaomi Redmi 1S, Xiaomi Redmi Note etc. Yureka’s registrations commenced at 2pm, 19 December 2014 on Amazon.in and the sales are expected to start from January. For those who were unable to register for the first sale of the device which only lasted for an hour, will be allowed to do so on January 13, 2014. Yureka does not only come with great specifications and good looks, but is topped with Cyanogen OS 11, which allows users to customize their phone endlessly. We spent some time with the device, checking out the features and its performance, following are first impressions of the Yureka.

Display

Right from the moment announcement about the 5.5-inch IPS LCD screen was made, we were excited to see how the new brand can cut down the prices so low without compromising the screen quality. But to our surprise, the phone has a great touch screen and was capable of giving a smooth performance, without any compromises in the screen. The display is indeed sharp and totally worth the price.

You might feel that YU could have done a little better while watching High Definition videos or while playing games, but you obviously cannot ask for a display better than this at Rs. 8,999. The viewing angles are great, and the phone is capable of delivering a screen upto 80 degrees without any shift or saturation in the actual colors. We couldn’t really test the phone’s screen under sunlight due to the weather conditions, but the screen is was quite reflective under indoor lights. But the indoor reflection of the screen obviously doesn’t give you a reason for not buying the smartphone. To complete the display, you will find a Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

Design

When we first picked up the device, it was really shocking to observe how light the device was. The 155 grams heavy device looks beautiful and complete. The design of the device is quite elegant and feels good in hand. The curved rear side adds to the comfort in holding the device and the matte finish is an additional advantage. The speaker grill is found above the 5.5-inch screen on the front and the 5 megapixels camera is besides the speakers grill. The power button is placed on the right edge on the smartphone, while the volume rocker keys can be found on the right side.

The YU branding on the smartphone can be found on the rear side, on the grey moonstone finish. Along with the YU branding, the 13 megapixels camera, with the LED flash and the speaker grill is located on the rear side. Three capacitive touch buttons, one for the options, the middle one for home screen and the last one for back are located right below the screen. The phone is easy to access when it comes to button placement, as all the buttons can be reached without making an odd gestures. So, as far as the design factor is concerned YU has done a pretty good job.

Camera

Well, to be very honest this is one of the finest smartphone cameras you can get in this price segment. The indoor images captured by the smartphone were good enough and the light captured by the camera lens was perfect. As far as the rear camera technology is concerned, it comes with a blue filter which is capable of balancing the light intensity and introducing the lens to better light exposure. The weather conditions on that particular day didn’t allow us to test the camera performance under sunlight, but we will definitely be doing that in our review. Following are some images captured by the Yureka smartphone’s 13 megapixels rear camera.

Operating System and Features

Yureka is the second device running the Cyanogen OS, following the OnePlus One. The Cyanogen OS 11 provides the Yureka users a great deal of customizations, with which users can have their own taste of layout and color scheme on their device. A good news for the ones who are planning to go for the device is that, the Cyanogen Inc. co-founders have promised that the Yureka will be the first device to receive the Cyanogen OS 12 update, which will run on the latest Android Lollipop v5.0.

The Cyanogen OS 11 also gives you the access to set the data privacy limits for different applications, as in, you can select what all apps would be able to access different segments of your data (contacts, media files, locations, messages etc.). This feature has been termed as the ‘Privacy Guard’. In addition to this, Yureka also allows data encryption and remote data wipe in case you misplace your phone. For Yureka specifically, Cyanogen has partnered with NextBit, which is a cloud based service and will sync all your application data, game logs and rest of the operating system files that you might not want to lose, and save it on its cloud. It not only keeps a backup of your data, but also provides a feature to sync the backed up data across devices.

Performance

The phone comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 64-bit octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz, which is capable of performing sufficiently good and should be able to support all the latest and popular applications. We’ll be talking more about the performance in our full review of Yureka once we’ve tested it under all conditions. On paper, the phone comes with a 2GB DDR3 RAM and 16GB of internal storage, which is expandable upto 32GB via microSD card. Yureka scores an exceptional score of 31,117 on the AnTuTu benchmarking application, which seems to be amazing for a smartphone in this price segment.

Rahul Sharma, co-founder YU explained that “the 64-bit processor means that the processor can access upto 4 billion times more memory than the 32-bit system and utilizes the RAM more effectively.”

Battery

Yureka might have impressed you with its spectacular specifications and good looks, but battery might not. The 2500mAh removable Li-Ion battery is the only source that shall power your Yureka smartphone. Rahul Sharma, co-founder YU mentioned the optimization of the Cyanogen Operating System with the hardware to get the best results in terms of battery backup, but we are yet to test how the battery performs under various conditions. Stay tuned to check out our review to know the in-depth battery details. On paper, Yureka is capable of giving a 210 hours of backup on standby, 11 hours on 4G LTE and 13 hours on 3G.

Seagate Announces 6TB Hard Disk

Seagate sub LaCie has pre-announced a 6TB near line disk drive from its parent and it doesn’t appear to use the slow write shingled magnetic recording technology.

LaCie’s news came out with the NAB event in Las Vegas, which opened on Friday. There are details of the drive on Seagate’s website, although the drive has not been announced and is not yet available.

The Enterprise Capacity drive has these features:

7,200rpm spin speed,
2, 3, 4, 5 and 6TB capacity points,
128MB cache,
encryption option with Secure Instant Erase or SED FIPS 140-2 option,
SAS 12Gbit/s and SATA 6Gbit/s interface options and
a 25 per cent increase in areal density.

Seagate says the drive has 8th generation technology, that’s gen 8 PMR (perpendicular magnetic recording) technology. It claims its drive “provides a 25 per cent nearline performance boost over competitive offerings,” with “best-in-class random and sequential read/write performance”.

Seagate said it doesn’t yet need to use the lighter gas, which reduces friction and heat. The company used the same perpendicular magnetic recording technology that it has on previous models, but it was able to increase areal density from 831 bits per square inch to 1,000.

“We didn’t have to use helium to get to this capacity, and it’s 25% faster than their helium drive,” said Barbara Craig, a marketing manager with Seagate. “You can rest assured, when we need it [helium] we’ll use it.”

Seagate’s Enterprise Capacity 3.5 HDD v4 is aimed at cloud-based data centers, where near-line storage is king.
The new drive also comes in 2TB, 4TB and 5TB capacities and with either 12Gbps SAS or 6Gbps SATA connectivity.
As with its past enterprise drives, Seagate’s new drive is self-encrypting with the company’s Instant Secure Erase, which overwrites data multiple times for easy drive disposal or repurposing. The drive is also FIPS SED certified.
Seagate’s “Super Parity” error correction firmware with RAID rebuild functionality is located on the drive’s SAS controller, which improves data rebuild times after a drive error. Craig said a drive’s data can be rebuilt “in hours instead of days.”

Craig said the new enterprise drive can sustain 550TB in data writes annually — 10 times the 55TB workloads that Seagate’s best desktop drives can handle.

“This is the fastest-growing segment in the enterprise space,” Craig said. “People today are still trying to use desktop drives for near-line storage applications.”

While Seagate did not release pricing, as it sells most of its enterprise-class drives to storage array makers, Craig did say the drive will be the same price per gigabyte as the previous 4TB capacity model.

Microsoft Lumia 535 Launched in India for Rs.9,199

Lumia 535 is the first device of Microsoft to be launched without the Nokia brand and it will be available in the market from November 28.

Lumia 535, the first smartphone in the Lumia series to be announced without Nokia brand name, has been launched in India by Microsoft for Rs 9,199.

The Microsoft Lumia 535 has a 5 inch IPS LCD display with qHD (540x960 pixels) resolution. The display has scratch resistant Gorilla Glass 3 coating. This 8.8 mm thick smartphone weighs 146 grams which is pretty decent for a 5 inch device.

The Lumia 535 has 1.2 GHz Snapdragon 200 quad core processor that runs the Windows Phone 8.1 Lumia Denim operating system. The phone has decent 8 GB internal storage apart from an expandable storage slot that can accommodate a micro SD card of up to 128 GB. Also it has decent 1 GB RAM.

The Microsoft Lumia 535 has a 1905 mAh removable battery that claims to offer 13 hours of 3G talktime and 6.5 hours of maximum video playback. There is a micro SIM slot in the Lumia 535 which has Bluetooth4.0, micro USB 2.0 port, and WiFi with hotspot feature. It has GPS with A-GPS and A-GLONASS for navigation. Besides, it has access to Here Maps, Bing Maps, and Here Drive+ navigation apps.

The Lumia 535 comes with a 5 megapixel auto focus rear camera with f/2.4 aperture and 28 mm camera focal length. There is an LED flash in the rear panel too. In the front, this phone has a 5 megapixel wide angle fixed focus camera. It has FM radio and comes with noise cancellation as well.

The Microsoft Lumia 535 comes in orange, black, grey, green, white, and blue colours.
