DB Baley aka Douglas Story project: Explore It village

Questa notte ho visitato il complesso di DB Baley "Explore It village" e, come guida eccezionale, ho avuto l'autore che mi ha accompagnata in tour nel villaggio!
Molto interessante la Trattoria, da visitare e da giocare, infatti al suo interno si possono trovare
molte installazioni interattive, basta un touch, gli oggetti si animano e ci si ritrova ad affettare carote o a preparare zuppe, per non parlare della parte vocale che precede o segue le animazioni, a seconda di quale bottone vogliate attivare.
DB Baley ha ancora una volta ha colto lo spirito burlone di Second Life e dei suoi abitanti, ottenendo un risultato molto soddisfacente!
E' una land da non tralasciare!

Second Life Documentary Selected To Premiere At Prestigious Sundance Film Festival Next Year

In seguito ad un articolo apparso sul corriere della sera online, a firma di Alessandro Sala, di cui vi incollo il link

si è sviluppata su facebook l’ennesima discussione provocata dal rumore sulla presunta centounomilionesima morte di Second Life.

A questa discussione alla quale hanno partecipato gli esponenti più rappresentativi della comunità italiana in SL, il giornalista del corriere ha risposto con un altro articolo che ha avuto molti commenti direttamente sulla pagina del Corriere.

Analizando i 90 commenti e più che la nota di Biancaluce Robbiani ha scatenato, si evince quanto segue:

in Italia, in generale, le istituzioni (Comuni Provincie, Regioni, Ministeri, Università, Accademie) non investono su progetti di valore nati e cresciuti in Second Life, mentre all’estero questa prassi è già ampiamente consolidata;
la comunità italiana appare in stand-by e molto slegata;
SL non è morta, è che si compie l’errore di dimenticare tutto quello che si è stratificato, tutte le attività svolte e i progetti importanti ancora vivi e vegeti. Come dice Gabriele Cazzulini, i cui interventi sono quelli ai quali mi sento più vicina, oltre a quelli di Paolo Valente.

Scrive Cazzulini: Secondo me è una forte svalutazione del potenziale di SL, e dei mondi virtuali per estensione, la tendenza a catalogare e classificare le sue dinamiche come fosse un oggetto unico, un monolite, indifferenziato e con una struttura relativamente semplice. Dall'esterno, per colpa anche di una inadeguata informazione e di una disinformazione troppo facile, SL viene schiacciata in una piccola stanza dei divertimenti. Ma sarebbe come comprimere un'intera biografia su una fase determinata del suo sviluppo. E il resto? Appunto, l'evoluzione. Oltre a questa riduzione semplificatrice, per usare un eufemismo, si tende a considerare SL come un'esperienza contingente, a breve scadenza. Non si pensa ad un orizzonte lontano. L'ottica quotidiana, e qui ritorno sul giornalismo, è predominante. C'è un evento e si parla solo di questo. Non c'è più quell'evento, allora non si parla più. Ergo: tutto è morto. Allora qui, secondo me, sorge una questione di metodo, più che di merito. Il problema è comunicare le eccellenze di SL. Nota: non voglio farne questione di nazionalismi. Basta con i complessi di inferiorità. Il gradiente culturale virtuale è capace di volare al di sopra di questi confini. Chi sventola ancora le bandierine degli stati è meglio che vada allo stadio. Ritorno al discorso: il rischio è ghettizzare le eccellenze in enclavi dorate ma sconosciute ai più. Questo non è soltanto un problema dei mondi virtuali. Già questo è un fortissimo elemento di attualità, che testimonia quanto sia pulsante la vitalità dei mondi virtuali, nonostante saltuari "becchini" giornalistici.

Come a dire: il meglio italiano c'è, esiste, ma voi non lo vedete!

Second Life Avatar Design Research Project on Odyssey Island

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION – AVATAR DESIGN WORKSHOP AND FOCUS GROUP

Do you like to make unique avatars? Are you interested in Modern Art? Have you ever wanted to perfect your design skills through the critical input of your peers?

A Graduate Student at Simon Fraser University in Vancouver, Canada is studying avatar design in Second Life and is looking for participants who would be willing and interested in contributing a small portion of their time to developing this academic research.

Interested participants would be involved in a small 2-4 hour workshop session one day and a follow-up focus group for 1-2 hours involving an avatar design critique session with peers.

Both sessions will take place on Odyssey Island which is the home to many esteemed contemporary avatar artists, critics and designers. http://odysseyart.ning.com

The researcher plans to watch participants create avatars based on established Modern Art design guidelines borrowed from Art-History to see if they still translate into interesting and useful avatar design.

The research will be taking snapshots and video of the avatar creators during the building process so they can be critiqued during the peer review session.

At the end of this research, the researcher will write about the strengths and limitations of using Modernist guidelines to inform avatar design in Second Life and other next generation virtual worlds.

All participants will own the rights to their own avatar creations being generated during this workshop. The researcher will only document these designs in order to visually illustrate their relationship to the theoretical frame-work.

Any potential participants must meet this criteria:

1 – Genuine interest in designing avatars – especially designing for themselves as well as for clients/friends/other people.
2 – Some arts background (including arts produced exclusively in SL)
3 – Relative fluency in navigating the building controls in Second Life.
4 – Reasonable fluency in English (written) and/or ability to use an in-world translator effectively.
5 - The willingness to allow their avatar designs made in this case-study session to be publicized, documented and researched by the author.
6 – The willingness to participate for the duration of the research project.
7 – Professes not to be a member of a captive population (inmate), psychiatric in-patient nor a youth under the age of 19.
8 – The willingness to sign a consent form (over the age of 19).
