It was the premium package that offered countless of channels. It was a sweet deal, and we thought we were getting our moneys worth. However, after a month and a half, we noticed something, we weren’t using our cable package as much as we should’ve. We were barely watching any of the channels. To make matters worst, my wife was either glued to the Netflix App on the iPad or Netflix on the Apple TV. It seems that we were paying a substantial amount for a service that we were not using. We were barely watching the any channels, and it appears that our cable was useless.

Upon mutual agreement we decided to cut our cable, and replace it with just watching online content. We decided to use Netflix primarily for watching movies, along with other websites that offer free movies. I have not been inclined to use Hulu Plus, because it has no interest to me.

So what has it been like since cutting our cable?

Well, to be honest, our watching TV has increased. Netflix’s online ‘instant watch’ is a great service for only $8 a month. This service offers a wide range of Movies and TV series. If you don’t mind older movie titles and TV series then it is a great service. With recent reports of Netflix shifting it’s business model from renting DVDs to streaming online content, the company looks to grow both it’s online content and subscribers within the next two years. According to a report from Tech Crunch published earlier this year,

Netflix added 7.7 million net new subscribers total last year, up from 2.9 million in 2009. The growing appeal of streaming should keep driving that number up. And Netflix is spending less to attract new customers. While new subscribers grew 63 percent, Netflix spent 10 percent less on marketing. Its average cost to acquire anew subscriber fell to $11.13 in the quarter, from $19.81 during the September quarter before pure streaming was an option. Also, a lot more people are taking advantage of Netflix’s free one month trial to see if streaming is for them. Nearly 9 percent of subscribers were in free trials during the quarter, up from about 6 percent the quarter before (and 3 percent a year ago).
                                                                                                                 Photo from Tech Crunch
Overall we have been extremely happy with Netflix. As mentioned earlier our time spent consuming online media has increase because of the wide selection of watching TV series. For example, all six seasons of Lost (one of my favorite TV shows of all time), Prison Break, 24, and many popular tv series can occupy hours of your time. My wife is currently watching Torchwood series (meh).

Apple TV vs. iPad Vs. Desktop

The User Interface for Netflix on the Apple TV 2 is superb. Searching through the various content is smooth and user friendly. Combined with the remote app from Apple, browsing through your media is great. On top of Netflix, Apple TV offers you the ability to rent movies and also tv shows from iTunes catalog, stream online music, access your media on your desktop, search youtube, and stream movies from your iOS devices. With iOS 5 releasing this fall, airplay will have a great use with iPad 2 users through the mirroring feature.I wish it was the same with Netflix iPad app.

                                                                                                                           Netflix on the iPad

The iPad app is horrible, and makes it quite cumbersome to browse through the different selections, even with the most recent update. However, the ability to watch a movie in bed far surpasses the experience one would have when watching with a laptop. The iPad just seems natural, and the battery life last up to nine hours (literally).

There is also an iPod App, but I have not used it. I don’t enjoy squinting my eyes on a small screen.

Watching it on the desktop is also enjoyable, as most of the time I have something else running while watching the movie. Next to the iPad the desktop would be the way to watch Netflix.
Netflix on 2nd Gen Apple TV

So do I regret cutting my cable?

No. The only thing I regret is having access to local news. Other than that small inconvenience the positive outcome far outweighs it. Because today the options to watch online content is numerous and also for a low cost of subscription, the decision has been great. Are you planning on cutting your cable?

Blogsy iPad App: First impression

I decided to look for the perfect iPad app that would make it easy for me to blog on the go. I have tried wordpress app and that was a disaster. I then used blogpress, which works well but the formatting is quite horrible when my posts are published. So I decided to buy Blogsy. So here are my first impressions about the app.

Setting it up

I did have problems setting up my blog accounts with Blogsy, however after visiting their FAQ page I was able to resolve them in no time. Their are multiple services that blogsy support: blogger, wordpress, flickr, and YouTube. I will go more into detail with my full review.

The UI is gorgeous and simple. This is a welcome plus. Formatting settings above make it easy to edit and format texts within your post.

So far this app looks quite promising. I will do a full review after I have put this app to use. Thanks for the stopping by, and don't forget to follow. I want to learn more about Computer Network, so every now and then I will post new articles titled Computer Networking 101. For those of us who are new to computer network, I will go ahead and share with you some of the things I learned during my study.

So what is an Access Point (AP)?

Basically and access point is your home or work routers. Routers are known as Nodes. Their main function is to provide an access point in which wireless signal can be converted to digital signal. These devices are normally small and have an adapter, antenna, and radio transmitter. Access Points can be used for one computer or many computers as shown in the picture below.

Sine the first iPad was released a year ago, I have used it mostly for my classes. I replaced my laptop with the iPad when attending classes because of its portability. While I have tried over 30 paid iPad apps, I have come across one app that truly fits my need. That is the Noteshelf App. This app is designed for those that prefer to handwrite their notes. I have always been faster at writing my notes with a pen and paper versus using the iPad touch screen. This is where the Noteshelf is superior in writing versus other popular apps such as Penultimate.

Smooth Ink Technology

The ink on this app mimics the actual ink of a real pen. If I speed up the motion of strokes, the ink thins automatically, and if I write slow the ink thickness increases. The ink does a great job in keeping up with your pen strokes even when you are writing really fast.

                                               Video Review of Noteshelf

Add photos to Notes

With the new iPad 2 that has a camera, adding photos inside your notebook becomes a plus. During my first year with the iPad in school, I used my 4th gen iPod Touch to snap photos and send it to my iPad. I would then add these photos into my note notebook, and still have the ability to mark these photos. So how does this help?

In one of my classes, my professor love handing out worksheet that had keywords and concepts. Instead of keeping them, I would snap photos of these apps then upload it to the iPad. Then these worksheets were in my notebook and I am able to write notes on it. Therefore keeping both virtual notes and scanned copies of the document in the iPad. I was able to throw away the original copy, and if I needed another one, it has the option to print it.

Exporting Options

Should you wish to export your notes, Noteshelf gives you a great options. Not only can you print and email your notes, Noteshelf supports the popular cloud services of Dropbox, and Evernote. Don't forget the basic iTunes exporting options.

Organize Notes into Notebooks

Noteshelf offers users the option to organize their notes into different notebooks. One notebook for one class. Not only can you organize your notes, but it has multiple page templates to choose from. Overall this is by far the superior writing app. Though it lacks options to record lectures, or type, these are minor compared to the ability to write with it. Please feel free to share with me some of the best note taking apps you use. If you want me to do an iPad app review for you just leave a comment below. Don't forget to follow my blog, it helps. Thanks.
Or when you pass this person both of you walk pass as if you never met before? Only to regret it after you passed them. Well today was one of those days with the experience. However, instead of walking pass this individual and ignoring them, I forced a big smile on my face and said hi. I even called the person by name.
The best part was their reaction. It was as if they had seen a ghost or someone holding a gun to their head. (Did I brush my teeth?) Their eyes wide open, with the jaw slightly dropped. They were stunned, so was I with their reaction. Eventually my greeting was returned with a smile and a friendly hi. As we both continued to our different destination, a thought came to my mind;
This term is called Digital Citizenship. So what is it? Well, after a quick search online, I came across a definition that I suppose would best define the term. It is a concept that helps parents, teachers, and technology leaders educate young children/student on how use technology appropriately. According to Digital Citizen Blog,

"Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology."

Well, it's great to know that there are programs, and concerned folks teaching the young ones how to behave online. Do we take time out of our busy day to teach our children the right way to use the internet?

Valued PlayStation(R)Network/Qriocity Customer:

We have discovered that between April 17 and April 19, 2011,
certain PlayStation Network and Qriocity service user account
information was compromised in connection with an illegal and
unauthorized intrusion into our network. In response to this
intrusion, we have:

1) Temporarily turned off PlayStation Network and Qriocity services;

2) Engaged an outside, recognized security firm to conduct a full
and complete investigation into what happened; and

3) Quickly taken steps to enhance security and strengthen our
network infrastructure by rebuilding our system to provide you
with greater protection of your personal information.

We greatly appreciate your patience, understanding and goodwill
as we do whatever it takes to resolve these issues as quickly and
efficiently as practicable.

Although we are still investigating the details of this incident,
we believe that an unauthorized person has obtained the following
information that you provided: name, address (city, state, zip), country,
email address, birthdate, PlayStation Network/Qriocity password and login,
and handle/PSN online ID. It is also possible that your profile data,
including purchase history and billing address (city, state, zip),
and your PlayStation Network/Qriocity password security answers may
have been obtained. If you have authorized a sub-account for your
dependent, the same data with respect to your dependent may have
been obtained. While there is no evidence at this time that credit
card data was taken, we cannot rule out the possibility. If you have
provided your credit card data through PlayStation Network or Qriocity,
out of an abundance of caution we are advising you that your credit
card number (excluding security code) and expiration date may have
been obtained.

For your security, we encourage you to be especially aware of email,
telephone and postal mail scams that ask for personal or sensitive
information. Sony will not contact you in any way, including by email,
asking for your credit card number, social security number or other
personally identifiable information. If you are asked for this information,
you can be confident Sony is not the entity asking. When the PlayStation
Network and Qriocity services are fully restored, we strongly recommend that
you log on and change your password. Additionally, if you use your PlayStation
Network or Qriocity user name or password for other unrelated services or
accounts, we strongly recommend that you change them as well.

To protect against possible identity theft or other financial loss, we
encourage you to remain vigilant, to review your account statements and
to monitor your credit reports. We are providing the following information
for those who wish to consider it:
- U.S. residents are entitled under U.S. law to one free credit report annually
from each of the three major credit bureaus. To order your free credit report,
visit www.annualcreditreport.com or call toll-free (877) 322-8228.

- We have also provided names and contact information for the three major U.S.
credit bureaus below. At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus
place a "fraud alert" on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps
to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can
make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however,
that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you,
it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your
identity. As soon as one credit bureau confirms your fraud alert, the others
are notified to place fraud alerts on your file. Should you wish to place a
fraud alert, or should you have any questions regarding your credit report,
please contact any one of the agencies listed below:

It's for his Android T Mobile Phone. The boot up screen mimics the boot up from a normal pc. I share because it was my first glimpse into the customization of the Android Platform.

iOS devices do have the ability to add custom apps to tweak the interface, however it requires the user to jailbreak their device. By doing this you nullify your Apple Warranty Check out the video up top. These protocols allow an organizations (i.e. business) network to perform it's function. But before I dive into the different protocols, let's begin by defining what is a protocol.

What is a Protocol?

A protocol is simply a rule that defines network communications. In other words, a protocol is a language that computers use to communicate with each other. Just as we humans need to speak and understand the same language to communicate effectively, so do computers. So when I refer to protocols in this article, I am simply referring to a certain type of computer languages.

What are the different types of protocol that exists?

There are many protocols that exist within a network, but I will cover with you a few that I have learned. These protocols will are found within Transmission Control Protocol/ Internet Protocol Suite.

TCP
TCP known as Transmission Control Protocol is a connection oriented protocol. It's main focus is to ensure delivery of data between computers.

HTTP
Hyper Text Transfer Protocol is used by web browsers to transfer files. This protocol is also used to send or transfer web documents between clients and servers.

HTML

Hyper Text Mark Language is known as a data format protocol. This protocol allows for the documents to be read by web browsers. A document needs to have certain tags that act as a translator to allow web browsers to read the documents.

SSL

Secure Socket Layer is a security protocol that insures safe web transaction.

HTTPS

HyperText Transfer Protocol over Secure Socket Layer is a form of security protocol used by web browsers. The url usually begins with HTTPS://. You usually see this type of protocol when you are entering sensitive information over the internet, such as credit card information.

FTP

File Transfer Protocol provides a way to send files. It can transfer binary files. It is a generic method of transferring files. It can include security of files in the form of username and password. FTP url begins with FTP://username&password

SMTP

Simple Mail Transfer Protocol used to send mail to your server.

POP 3

Post Office Protocol 3 is used to download an email from a server to a client. The server holds the email, and the local client can access the email and download it with the help of POP3.

IMAP

Internet Message Access Protocol are settings that is used to get your email. This protocol allows users to access their emails from various locations instead of sending files back and forth between computers. Mail remains on the remote servers and are not actually downloaded to the client system.

TELNET

This protocol is insecure because it data is sent in plain text. Also the device needs to be running the telnet service for it to work. Telnet allows an attached computer to act as a dumb terminal, with data processing taking place on the TCP/IP host computer. It is still widely used to provide connectivity between dissimilar systems. Telnet can also be used to test a service by the use of HTTP commands.
Editors Note: I will update this post as I still do not understand it's main use.

SSH

Secure Shell is the protocol used to protect plain text in TELNET.

DNS

Domain Name Services is a set of rules used to resolve a web name to its numeric address.

Conclusion

These are a few of the protocols that I have learned that is used in Network.

In today's world of the ever fast moving information overload, computer networking is the essential element that any organization will need to incorporate if it is to succeed. Clients and customers are the air that an organization needs to survive, and computer networking is the blood cells that carry the air to it's essential vital parts. So let's begin by identifying what is Networking and why is it important.

What is a Network?

Network is a group of computers that can share informations through their interconnections. In other words, multiple computers that are connected together weather through wires or router that has the ability to share information. If you have two computers connected together that one can access information for the other, then you have a network. Within the I.T. field, these computers are know as nodes or hosts.
To understand Networking, you will need to become familiar with these three elements:

1. Transmission medium provides a path for electrical signals between devices

2. Network interface are devices that send and receive electrical signals.

3. Protocols are rules or standards that describe how hosts communicate and exchange data.
Become familiar with these terms, because it will be used by I.T. professionals in the field.

So how do networks save organization money?
Despite its cost and implementation, networks benefit organizations by helping it save money. Here are four examples:

1. First network helps consolidates storage. These storage are used to keep information (i.e. customer information, billing, track orders, employee payroll, etc...) that an organization needs to thrive.

2. Allows the ease of sharing peripheral devices like printers. By having networks, this allows for the company to connect multiple computers to one printer. This saves the company from having to purchase a printer for each computer. Though it may sound convenient for each computer to have it's own printer, it would be a waste of capital.

3. It will increase internal and external communications. Communications will help a company succeed and thrive among it's clients and employees.

4. Increase productivity and collaboration within the organization. The ability to email, call, share documents, and video conference increases work productivity for employees. Information, orders, assignments, and ideas are able to travel fast.

So what are the different types of Network?

There are different types of method that IT professional can install their computers. Let's identify them with their strengths and weaknesses.

1. Peer to Peer Network

Image via Wikipedia
This method is the simplest and easiest manner of connecting your different nodes or hosts. Computers are simply connected to each other, and can access information. While it is easy to connect computers, it's not very scalable. It is hard to manage when there are a lot of computers connected to your network. The more computers you add to your Peer to Peer Network (P2PN), the harder it will be to manage it. No central authority because there it leads to every host being a network administrator. There is also a lack of centralize server to share files, and the network administrator would have to go to each computer to save and back up data (a nightmare). If P2PN is not the preferred network for large organizations, what is the preferred? The answer is Client/Server Network.

2. Client/Server Network

What separates Client/Server Networks from P2PN is the ability to have a centralize authority. There are specialize computers such known as servers that help share files, printer managements, and data backup storage. If there is a problem with the printer, the network administrator would access the server to identify and resolve the problem. This network has the ability to manage a high volume of computers, because each computer is connected to this main server. The computers that are connected to the server are known as clients and the specialized computer that is the central authority is called the server.

Image via Wikipedia

Let's Wrap it Up

A network is simply a bunch of computers connected together to share and access information. Networks save company money. There are two types of networks that exist, Peer to Peer and Client/Server Network. Peer to Peer is easy to maintain and implement. It does not work well if the there are many computers connected. Client/Server is the preferred network. The most expensive computer that is specialized (i.e. customized) is known and the server. The server acts as the boss computer. All the other computers that are connected to the server are known as clients. These computers are less expensive and cheap. If you have any thoughts or questions, leave them in the comment section or email me at thesoletech@gmail.com. Thanks.
I arrived about half an hour early so I decided to wait for her in the baggage claim. While waiting, I took my iPad and began reading the most recent tech news going on, I have been doing this since I first purchased the iPad almost a year ago. Suddenly an older woman in her late forties approached me and started a conversation. It went something like this,

Woman: How do you like your iPad?

Me: Oh, I love it. Thanks.

Woman: My husband just bought me my iPad. And, I love it too! (she has a big smile on her face).

Me: That's great!

Woman: I have never been a computer person, but this iPad makes it so simple and fun to use this computer.

Me: (I just nodded my head in agreement with a smile)

Woman: (pulls out iPad and proceeds to show me how to use it for the next ten minutes. lol)

She then continued telling me her wonderful experience with the iPad for the next ten minutes. I didn't mind listening to her, until her husband showed up. Her experience taught me something. The reason the iPad is so successful is because it is easy to use. The user experience far exceeds the tech specs found in the device. Those who love computers will say that the iPad is not powerful enough to work as a fully function computer. However, to those who are not into computer, the iPad is powerful enough to do simple common web task as email, facebook, netflix, ebooks, kindle, and an dead simple to use app store.

After parting ways, I thought to myself, this woman from Texas and me from Hawaii came to a common ground based on our iPads. A device that causes people to randomly start a conversation with strangers at the airport. Pretty cool insight for me as a tech geek.

These are the elements that makes the iPad a successful device. And if you don't believe me, ask the 17 million people who have purchased the device in less than a year.

Got my Hands on the new MacBook Air! Apple has just released their most thinnest laptop model known as the MacBook Air 2011 series. Not only is this laptop thin, it looks absolutely fantastic with the new form factor slightly the size of the iPhone 4. First of it's class, the MacBook Air looks to move away from traditional built laptops by doing away with the traditional specs on current laptops. While I am not going to go into the specs with the Air, you can visit Apples site for the full details. Here I will share with you some of my initial impressions about the device.

Light as a feather

When I first picked up the Air, I was surprise by it's weight (2.3lbs). It was extremely light, and I was able to hold fairly comfortable with one hand for about ten minutes. The weight combined with the size makes it the perfect portable computer.

Here is my short video of the MacBook Air 2011

Full size Keyboard

The Air features a full size keyboard which definitely helps with typing. The usual Apple patterned island style keys on the keyboard is a welcomed feature for users. Those who have worked on Netbooks know that having keys crammed together can make it frustrating when creating long documents and spreadsheets for an extended amount of time. Typing on this small portable laptop made it simple and natural as if I am working on a normal full size laptop.

Design

The sleek design will definitely turn heads with this laptop. Built with the base aluminum used with all the other Mac computers, the Air looks and feels like it was built with quality, because... it actually was. I really enjoyed the time I had playing with this laptop. The speed of the OS was incredibly fast and is able to hold it's own with its older sibling the Macbook Pro. If I was going to be traveling a lot, then this is my choice. It comes in two different sizes of 11 and 13inch.

The only problem I have with this laptop is not the specs, but the actual price. If you planning to get one, be prepare to drop $999. With that same amount of cash you can buy a powerful PC computer. But if your looking for the high quality of an Apple product, then plan and save ahead. Planning to get a new laptop? Looking for tips or have questions about your current computer? Leave it below in the comment section I will be more than happy to help you.
Last week I had my iPod Touch stolen from me at school. I left my class room for a few minutes and when I returned it was gone. Fortunately for me I installed an app called Find My iPhone months in advance. Using my 3G iPad, I tracked the perpetrator all across campus. It led to a 45 minute cat and mouse chase through different parts of campus. During this ordeal, I felt like Jack Bauer of 24 on the race of time before I completely lost my iPod touch.

The app has the ability to pin point the exact location of your device on google map. It also gave me the ability to send message to the thief, lock my device or erase the data on it completely for security reasons. I messaged the thief with a warning that if the device is not returned within an hour, I will notify the police. It seemed like the message got through as this individual quickly turned it in to the lost and found on our campus. In the end I was able to recover my iPod touch with the Find my IPhone App, which I highly recommend for owners of the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch. Install the app and register your devices. It may help you recover your lost device. For more information check out my article on Tech Gear Examiner for more details about it. The size of the iPad makes it a perfect size for taking notes, whether your at work, school or home. So when it comes to taking notes, it all depends on your preference. If you prefer to handwrite your notes then NoteShelf may be an app that would fit your need.

NoteShelf allows you to handwrite your notes onto the iPad. What separates this app from the others is the pen technology that it uses. Noteshelf mimics that ink of your virtual pen at act similar to a real life pen. If you write really fast the lines will appear thin and light; while slow strokes will increase the ink thickness and darken the color.

Noteshelf has some cool features. You have the ability to separate your notes into different note books, which is handy for different classes. Along with the standard color changing ink, different sizing of pen, adding preset icons, Noteshelf allows you to add photos to your hand-written notes from your photo album. Those with the iPad 2 will have the ability to snap photos of paper documents and instantly add it to their notes. First gen iPad owners can always snap photos using their smart phones, then upload it later to Noteshelf.

What makes this app a must have for students or business workers is the ability to sync your files to popular cloud services like Dropbox, Evernote, and your local computer via iTunes. You also have the ability to mail your notes if needed. There are a few quirks that hold back this app from being the one stop note taking app, such as, no recording audio, and no option to type text. If you are one that needs to have the ability to type your notes, then I strongly do not recommend this app for you. Overall I have replaced this app with all of my of my other note taking apps for school. If you're looking for the best hand written note taking app that is very close to writing on a real paper, then this is the app for you. Keep in mind that is app will set you back at $5 for the app.

Location:Kulanui St,Laie,United States
