Illuminated Valentine Canvas

Today I'm sharing my entry for the glitter/metallic/shine category from season 14 of So You Think You're Crafty. Which was a year ago. But by the time it posted on the competition it was too late to post here so I waited until this year. As some of you are aware, I have taken a good amount of time off from blogging due to my husbands cancer diagnosis. He has finished all of his treatments and surgeries and is now cancer free! I have plans to return to blogging soon and so here is a step in that direction. Enjoy!

I love to make sparkly and shiny things. So I made an illuminated canvas!

I bought a big 20x20 canvas. I didn't get the thick one because it was like $30. I got the normal kind of canvas and it was priced at $13.99 but used a 40% off Hob Lob coupon! I designed what I wanted on the computer using this font and this font. I printed it out tiled and then taped it together. I taped it to the back of the canvas and used an outdoor floodlight to back light it so I could see the design through the canvas. I traced the design onto the canvas. I should have printed the whole thing black or at least used a black outline - it would have been easier to see it through the canvas.

I painted on my design with glitter paint for some sparkle. I painted it in order that I would have hand drawn it so that the brush strokes are going in the right direction. Then I poked holes in the heart (I used a Dremel but an awl would work, too) and pushed a string of 20 lights through the holes for some shine! I spaced the lights about every 2.5 to 3 inches. They're not evenly spaced because I wanted lights to be in the spots the letters and heart intersect. The strands of 20 come in either battery operated or UL. I went with the plug because we go through enough batteries as it is. But I am limited on placement options. Also, you can put the holes in before you paint. It really doesn't matter.

And I am still in love with it! I had it out this year as part of our Valentine's décor. You still have time to make one this year!

Hello out there if anyone still comes to my blog :)

First off, I apologize if you received any spam from me or needed any of my tutorials over the past 12 hours. Seems I was hacked and Google shut down my blog when they noticed suspicious activity, which I appreciate. It all seems ok now, except I had to delete my Google+ account. I'll be working on reestablishing that.

I've had a few people ask where I've been. Well, I was in a craft contest end of last year into this year, which I won (YAY!), but it completely wiped.me.out. So I took a little break, during which my husband was diagnosed with breast cancer which turned my world on end. I knew he was one in a million but I didn't have to be proven right in this way :) Anyway, he had a mastectomy a few months ago and is doing well and is now about half way through chemo treatments and will be cancer free! I plan to be back blogging this fall so I hope you come back and see me then. Until then I hope you are all well and I am really looking forward to blogging again!

Grandfather Clock Makeover (Thrifty to Nifty #11}

Once again, thank you all for the amazing honor of winning season 14 of So You Think You're Crafty! But I've got to say, even though it was fun, I'm glad it's over!

Here's my final project from that competition of how I transformed this "seen better days" clock from my husbands side of the family and gave it new life.

This clock was built in 1987 by a friend of my in-laws. It has spent many years in my basement. It had some damage (bottom corners and the weight sleeves are scratched and oxidized) and some missing pieces (pendulum bob and tall door glass) likely due to many moves over the years.

First thing I did was clean the surface. I wanted to give it a more commanding presence (because it's on the smaller side for a grandfather clock) so I added some molding along the front edges to give it more interest. Because the molding wood is "raw" I sprayed it with shellac so the surface wasn't as porous and would be more like the surface of the rest of the clock when I went to paint it. I also thought this front molding piece matched the molding on the top of the clock quite nicely and gave that "blank" space some interest! I added the molding with wood glue.

I took it apart and laid it down, using some really professional stilts (ok, cups) to prop it up off the floor. I painted it with Annie Sloan Chalk Paint {Old White}. I chose chalk paint because it covers so well without having to sand the previous finish.

Then I sanded it. I used 400 grit sandpaper to get a really nice and smooth finish. I also wanted some of the old finish to show throw along some of the edges and molding.

There was a large chip in one of the original moldings. While I was painting it, I found the chipped off piece inside the clock! So I glued it on with wood glue and painted it!

I finished it with Annie Sloan Dark Wax. I love that it picked up the wood grain from the veneer and worked its way into all the grooves in the molding!

For the damaged bottom corners, I picked up some brass corner covers and glued on some decorative corner pieces that I found in the scrapbooking section! I love that it mimics the clock face plate. I also replaced the "feet" for two reasons: one was missing and the remaining three were pretty worn.

I also found some decorative key hole plates in the scrapbooking section! Who knew?! Of course that was AFTER I went to all the hardware stores I could find looking for one. Ugh. I decided on one that I thought looked best on the clock then used some bronze foil paint so that it matched all the other metal pieces.

The glass was inexpensive and purchased from a local glazier. I made a stencil out of vinyl and used frosty spray paint to frost the glass. I decided to use paint for that rather than etching so that I can change the design every so often! :) Because of that, I put the design on the inside so that it is less likely to get scratched or washed off before I want it to. I also replaced the glass pins for the top glass and this glass.

As for the missing clock parts, I haven't been able to find replacement sleeves yet that are the same size as these, but I was able to borrow the pendulum bob for the photo shoot since the one I ordered hasn't arrived yet :/

It was a long ordeal getting this clock {mostly} done, but overall it was a fun project and I'm happy to have it "back in circulation"!

Red Baron Toy Plane {Thrifty to Nifty #10}

This was my entry for week 6 of season 14 of So You Think You're Crafty. It won that week!

I picked up an old wooden toy plane at a thrift store. It was $2. I walked around the store carrying it the entire time, debating on whether to buy it or not. I decided not to, and put it back. A day or two later, I went back for it. Not surprisingly it was still there. I mean, it was missing the wheels and it's rudder. The propeller was lose and had some permanent marker on it. And the whole thing was pretty scratched up.

I removed most of the old prop axle, but the part that was glued into the plane needed to be bored out. To do that I took a new axle, put the prop on it and when next to the drill bit, I marked how deep the drill needed to go using duct tape. Then I used a power drill to bore it out.

For the rudder, I hand drew a basic rudder shape on paper. I picked up a piece of craft wood from Lowe's and traced the shape on it. Because I couldn't find our jigsaw, I had to use my Dremel Trio. It didn't make the smoothest cuts, probably because I didn't have the best bit for the job. But it was late at night so I gave it a try. And after a few different attempts I ended up with one that worked ok. I sanded it down and rounded the edges. It fit real tight in the groove the old plane had for the rudder. Because it was such a tight fit, I didn't need to glue it. I hammered it in place and it's not going anywhere.

The replacement front wheels didn't line up with the old holes. So I took a piece of that craft wood and routered a groove with one of my other Dremels, and then cut it down to size. I glued it on below the the old wheel block and let that dry.

I sanded the entire plane down many times. Once I felt it was smooth enough and much of the varnish was gone, I taped of the struts and the rear "wheel".

Then it was ready to be sprayed with a wonderful glossy red. While the paint was drying, I stained the prop and the struts. While those were drying, the wheels were sprayed with a glossy black. The new prop axle was also sprayed black and the tire axles were sprayed red.

Once everything was dry, it was time to assemble the remaining pieces. I put each wheel on an axle, put some wood glue on the wheel and put the axle in the channeled out section, making sure the wheels still turned. And I glued the prop axle in the same way, also making sure the prop would still turn.

I cut the crosses out of black vinyl and placed them on squares of white vinyl (my inspiration photo is here).

Then applied the vinyl on the plane. For the final touches, I used a Sharpie to color the rear "wheel" and the cockpit.

DIY Shelf with Hanging Storage Tutorial

This was one of my entries in Season 14 of So You Think You're Crafty. It goes together in about a day when you factor in drying time.

I wanted this shelf to be as wide as the TV that hangs above it. The TV measures 63.5 inches wide so I decided the shelf would look nice at 63 inches wide plus trim. I needed a plank for the top, a plank below the top (to get the layered look) and a plank for the vertical board. In order to get the right shelf depth for the brackets, I needed a 10 inch deep plank. I picked up two 1x10x8 pine planks and one 1x8x8 pine plank and three 6x8 pine shelf brackets and some trim.

I marked each plank where they needed to be cut. The top board needed to be 63 inches wide. The board below that 61.25 inches and that vertical board 59.5 inches. Basically I wanted the bottom board to be 1.75 inches shorter than the top board and the vertical board 1.75 inches shorter than the bottom board so when stacked and centered, they tiered 3/4 of an inch on each side.

I cut them with a miter saw because I didn't have another option. The 10 inch planks were too deep for a single pass cut so I flipped them over to finish the cut. Once the boards were cut, it was time to attach them together.

Spread a bead of wood glue on the vertical board (1x10) along the edge where when flipped up...
it lines up with the side of the underneath plank (1x8).
Drill a pilot hole for your wood screw through the vertical plank into the underneath plank. The bit should be slightly smaller than your screw. Then use a recess bit over the pilot hole. You want the screw recessed because this board will be on the wall and you'll want it to hang flush with the wall.
Screw the planks together with 2 inch wood screws. I put in four (somewhat evenly spaced) along the length of the vertical board.

Next is preparing the brackets for the curtain rod.

Mark where you want the center of the hole to be. I marked it this way: from the corner I measured one inch across the top and then two inches down.
Tape two brackets together.
Drill a pilot hole, making sure you at least get partially through the bracket underneath. If you don't have a vice or good clamps, find a brave soul willing to hold them while you drill (I got my husband for this part). Separate the two brackets, then complete the pilot hole on the bottom bracket. Then for the third bracket, line it up with and tape it to one of the brackets with the drilled pilot hole and put the drill through the pilot hole and drill the partial pilot hole in the third bracket. Then complete the pilot hole as before once you separate the brackets.
Using a wood boring drill bit and the pilot hole as your guide, drill holes into each bracket. One at a time. I used a 3/4 inch bit because the curtain rod I used has a 5/8 inch diameter.

Next you attach the brackets to the basic shelf.

Remove the hardware that they come with.
Drill 2 pilot holes on the vertical plank and one pilot hole on the underneath plank going through to the bracket. Do this for all 3 with the recessed bit.
Apply glue to the brackets and attach to the shelf with wood screws.

Next is adding the top plank (1x10).

To the underneath plank, apply wood glue on the top.
Line up the top plank so that it's straight and centered. Clamp it to the underneath plank.
Drill two pilot holes at each end from under the bottom plank partway into the top plank. Use a recessed bit here as well.
Screw in 1-1/4 inch wood screws.
Fill in the recesses with wood filler.

Let the wood filler and glue dry. I sanded down the wood filler and added some more in a few spots. Once that dried again, I sanded it down again. I allowed the wood glue to dry for a couple hours.

Now comes the trim. For the bottom plank I used cove molding. For the top plank I used a molding that would provide a "lip" so that things on the shelf won't slide off. I used liquid nails to attach the trim because I do not have a brad nailer. It's on the list of tools to buy. I had to clamp it down because the trim would pop up a bit. After clamping it, I let it dry over night. I'm a novice miter cutter but wood filler is my best friend in these situations :) After the wood filler dried, I sanded it and the shelf was ready to paint!

I decided on black since the TV is big and black. Once the paint was dry, I slid in the curtain rod through the holes in the brackets. Then using black zip ties, I hung the baskets.

And here it is!

Marshmallow ornaments

My mom made these with us when my siblings and I were very young. I made them with my oldest daughter when she was little and my two daughters and I made them in January of this year before we put our tree away :) December is always so busy that we never had a chance to make them before Christmas. The bonus is, I wrote this post after we made them last season! {I've been itching to post this!} But because I wrote it in January, the watermarks are my old ones. Oh well.

Here they are after we made them:

Clearly my 9 year old wasn't too enthused to make it. Oh well. Probably because the excitement of Christmas had long passed.

To make them, here's what you need:

First put a sequin on a straight pin, pierce a mini marshmallow through the center so the sequin is now on top of the marshmallow. Then you stick the pinned marshmallow in the Styrofoam ball.

I made mine this way:

As you can see in step 2, I initially was going to continue going around in a horizontal circle, putting the next row centered between two marshmallows of the previous row. But I changed my mind to make a verticle circle of marshmallows. Once those were done I started filling up the spaces between until it was completely full.

I found a large gap and decided that would be a good place to put the ornament hanger. I took some ribbon and made a loop and stuck a pin through it as shown in step 2 below.

Then I put the pin through the styrofoam ball to form a loop to hang the ornament from a tree. After I hung it on the tree I discovered it needed a little more support so I added two more pins where the arrows are pointing below:

This is one of my fondest childhood memories, making these sith my Mother and brothers and sisters. And now I have memories making them with my children

A Fence for all Reasons

Thank you thank you thank you to all who voted during the Season 14 auditions at So You Think You're Crafty! I had enough votes to make it onto season 14! Yay! So excited! And now that the voting is over, I'm excited to share with you my audition project.

Here's what you need:

4 (or more if you want) picket fence boards. The supply at the store were all pretty weather worn which was ok with me for the look I wanted (old fence).
1 1x6x2 board for support beams
16 (4 per picket) 1-1/4 inch wood screws
decorative hooks (one for each picket)
white paint (I used flat interior house paint because it was in the basement)
steel wool (for the rust stain creation)
white vinegar (for the rust stain creation)
english tea bags (provides chemical reaction with the rust stain)
sander (much easier with a power sander, but if you really like to use elbow grease, by all means do so)
power drill
saw (I used a miter saw but anything that will cut straight will do)

I made the rust solution a few days before I began this project because it takes 24 hours and I wasn't sure when time would permit me to work on it so I wanted to be ready. To make the rust solution, I followed this tutorial.

To begin the project, I lightly painted the boards white. To paint the sides of the fence boards, I laid them on their sides next to each other and then ran the paint roller on the sides all at once.

Then I sanded them down. Partly because I only wanted some white to still be showing through when complete so that it would look like it had been outside for many years. And also because the boards were really splinter-y.

Yes, I did all of this in my living room (except the miter saw is in the garage). It was really cold outside. Anyway, I figured it was no less messy than some of the home improvements we've done. And I could watch movies at the same time! :)

Next I cut down the pickets to 4.5 feet. And I cut the 1x6x2 in half. At this point I wasn't sure how wide the fence was going to be. I'm not a 'plan every detail and step before beginning a project' person. I'm a 'figure it out as I go' kind of person and hope to achieve the vision in my head. Not always the smartest approach but it worked for me this time.

Then I tried rust and tea staining for the first time (again, using this tutorial). It's pretty cool! I applied the stains with a sponge brush. Here's the progression from painted/sanded board, to rust stain, and then with the tea added:

When that was all finished, it was time to decide on the finished size. Using my level for a spacer, because I liked how the spacing looked, I laid out the pickets on the support beams and marked where they needed to be cut then cut the support beams. It came to about 29.25 inches wide.

With the power drill, I drilled the pilot holes with a recessed bit for the screws so that the wood wouldn't split when I screwed the pieces together, and so that the screw head wouldn't stick out from the wood. I put two wholes on each picket per support beam for a total of 4 pilot holes in each picket. Then I screwed in the wood screws with a screwdriver.

Then I measured how far down I wanted the hooks to go and marked where the screw holes should be, making sure they were centered. Using a 1/32nd drill bit, I drilled pilot holes for the hooks. I did have to go back to the store to get different hooks because the screws that came with them were too long for the thickness of the picket fence.

You could put the hooks so they line up with the support beams. That way you don't have to get different screws. But I wanted my hooks to be higher up on my fence. I used a screwdriver to screw in the screws and voila! It was done!

Even though it could be just a seasonal piece, it can be used for all kinds of reasons. I do not have a mudroom, or a big entry way, or a mantle so this is a fun and decorative way to hang stockings or hats, scarves and coats, etc. You could even put one outside to hang your garden tools on. But my favorite is the stockings!!

It was an easier and faster project than I thought it would be. Which is always a good thing :)

Latest Thrifty Finds {23}

My Grandmother used to always have a tiered candy dish out when we all visited. It was fancy. I loved it. But something like that isn't really practical in my house. But when I saw this candy/nut dish I thought it was more our "speed". Plus I can update it!

I saw a pair of iron hanging candle holders, without the glass inserts. I picked them up.

And I love apothecary jars! I had to get this one because it's tall.

And this I think is an orb holder. A small one. If that's not what it is, then I have no clue what it was intended for.
