The Answer

The tragedy of this past week leave us all wanting. It is difficult to understand or even believe such things happen. Difficult to understand how someone can take lives and crush dreams of innocent people. No attempt to make some sort of sense of this event is possible. We spend hours talking about it, watching the news or reading the papers about it. We hear all of the news media pontificate about it, they spin it in a million different directions but they have no real answers. It leaves us wanting, sick at our stomach and somehow withdrawn just a bit more from society. We loose a another ounce of our innocence. It is a sad, sad time for our country.

We can search high and low for all kinds of answers. We can debate gun control and 1,000 other laws people of good intention want to prescribe to keep these kinds of things from happening again. We can add all kinds of additional layers of security to what we have now but in the end, nothing but a relationship with our Lord will change things.

Sin is sin and it raises it’s head in a million different ways. Sometimes in the most tragic ways, sensless ways but it is always destructive.

God gives us, gives His people the power to change our life, our land.

“If my people, who are called by my name, would humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sins and heal their land.” - II Chronicles 7:14

We must not fail this day, this time, as the people of God, to follow His word, to hit our knees and to lift our voice to the one that is The Answer.

Hill Tumbles

My first day in Hong Kong, I was blessed to play golf at the Hong Kong Golf Club. My host name was Joe.

The club was built in 1886, and it is very exclusive. They currently have a five year waiting period for new members .

I shot a 47 on the front and was playing even better on the back.

My partner dropped me off to hit my second shot on the Parr-4, 14th hole. I grabbed my 3-wood. Joe thought he had pulled the cart up too close to me, so he hit the gas and did a quick 360 to give me room to swing. Somehow, as he did, his left foot got wedged under the cart. He YELLED for help! When I saw his twisted foot, I thought he had broken his ankle. He yelled for me to push the gas pedal down and back the cart off his foot. I was on the driver’s side so I had to scramble around to the passenger side of the cart to reach the gas pedal.

I reached in with my free hand and pushed the gas pedal all of the way down. The cart quickly backed off of Joe’s twisted foot and ankle but the front end of the cart swung around and slammed into me, sending tumbling down the hill. The force of the blow was so strong, I rolled over sereval times, my golf club flying in one direction and my hat in the opposite direction. When I finally stopped tumbling I quickly started gathering my equipment and looking for Joe to see if he was ok.

As I got to me feet, I heard a roar of laughter coming from the tee box behind us. Apparently, the group following us had arrived at the tee box just in time to see our comedy routine and they were doubled over laughing.

We dusted ourselves off with nothing damaged or broken other than our male egos and my WHITE trousers, now highlighted with grass stained knees.

Apparently, The other two guys in our group had not seen our comedy act. As I walked up on the green, they both stared at me from head to toe. They looked at Joe, at each other, then back at my knees. Being gentlemen from the East, they said nothing!

Who’s Harry

I am still in China and my great friend Ray Sanders wrote this story. I think you will love it.

Who’s Harry?

Engaging and interacting with other cultures is one of the greatest thrills of taking a GiANT Experience!

For me those GiANT Experiences have taken me to some of the greatest wonders of the world. From Machu Picchu to the Taj Mahal, the sights and sounds of the world have gained my attention.

The most exciting part has been meeting and interacting with leaders from around the world. Together we have exchanged philosophies and ideas on how to make the world a better place. In fact, we have had an impact in a variety of ways.

My good friend and compatriot, Ross Hill, has journeyed with me and other CEO’s to many parts of the world. Anyone who has met Ross loves him. If they are with him for very long, they soon realize he is passionate about golf.

On our recent GiANT Experience to China, Ross felt compelled to explore ways to use golf as a way to make an eternal difference in the lives of top leaders.

Following one of our China Values Leadership Forums, Ross was invited to a round of golf at a prestigious Shenzhen golf course.

With little notice, Ross disappeared with a forum participant named Harry.

As our team was leaving for a private meeting with local leaders, my Chinese business partner asked as to where Ross had disappeared. I informed him that Ross had gone golfing with Harry.

“Harry?” came my partners reply. “Who is Harry?”

“Harry was at the forum,” I said.

“I am very concerned that Ross has been abducted. I do not know of a Harry who attended the forum,” my business partner expressed with great concern.

Our China team went into panic worried that our banker buddy had been kidnapped. The thought of raising ransom money was heavy on their thoughts!

After several calls and following a search at several golf courses, Ross was indeed found swinging and walking the local greens with his new Chinese friend.

“Ross is not with Harry! He is with Harry,” came the response from my business partner.

I said, “I don’t understand. He isn’t with Harry? He is with Harry?”

“Yes, Harry,” they said.

“Harry?” I said.

“No, Harry!” they replied.

While relieved he had not been found gagged and bound with duct tape, the communication break remained. I was confused.

Then it happened. My Chinese business partner began to laugh.

“Not Harry, H.E.N.R.Y. –Henry! he said.

We all began to laugh as yet another mystery had been solved. The Chinese said Henry, but the Americans heard Harry.

They say Henry. We hear Harry! They say, Harry. And we hear Harry. To us Henry and Harry are one and the same but for the Chinese the difference between Henry and Harry was the difference between panic and praise!

In short order the exchange between leaders soon resumed and the would be calamities faded away.

Later I could not help but reflect on the whole ordeal and think of how many times I have worried and fretted about things that ultimately never come to pass.

How often I see or hear things one way only to discover that my worry was founded in a poor perspective.

All to often I see things as a “Harry” ordeal. When in fact I have been dealing with a Henry-sized problem, an issue or circumstance that is really no big deal.

When facing the “Harrys” and “Henrys” of life, I hope I will learn to laugh and trust the one who loves me most will never give me more than I can handle.

To Him, Harry and Henry are the same. With him at my side I can experience life without need of worry as I keep walking and swinging my way through the greens of life!

China Chuckles

The following was written by my good friend, Ray Sanders.

China Chuckles!

I have been to many countries with my travel buddy, Ross Hill. We have been together on the back roads of Africa, in the jungles of Latin America and on high speed trains in China. It is fair to say we are passionate about doing what we can to try and make a difference when given the opportunity to interact with those we meet from around the globe. But never have I laughed so hard as I did recently during one of our Giant Experiences’ Values Leadership Forums in China.

Let’s just say Ross was center stage and had the room in a roar. It was not so much because he is known for his comic routines but because the interaction between he and his interpreter had the room in stitches.

Public speaking is challenging enough but especially when in front of highly educated business leaders from one of the world’s most powerful nations. The pressures and tensions are high to say the least.

You had to be there to truly appreciate it, but as Ross shared a point from his speech, there would be an unusually long pause between the spoken word and the interpretation. The rhythm soon got out of sync as east met west on stage.

The interpreter was trying his best to keep up with Ross and Ross was trying hard to accommodate his understudy with patient persuasion.

The interpreter began to express his playful frustration in an effort to get his interpretation absolutely right.

Ross, in his attempts to assist with the cultural divide, got tickled. That is when the whole thing unraveled and the room came alive with uncontrollable laughter.

Seeing a robust American banker in total loss of control with giggles and belly rolls of laughter in the midst of a serious talk about the world’s economic crises, was all it took to push the audience over the edge! It was out of control and everyone loved it! The China chuckles were loose and the forum reached new heights of friendship and enthusiasm.

I have often heard that a smile in any language is smile. For certain was the case during my recent journey to the far east with my dear friend. Life is to serious not to have some fun along the way.

Thanks to Ross, and our unsuspecting interpreter, the world was a brighter place, if not for a little while, on that otherwise very normal day.

If only the world could catch a case of the China chuckles, then, for sure, the world would be a better place!

Tony Fritz

I first met Tony on Sunday afternoon in an airport in Minnesota. I think he was the last one to board the plane headed to Hong Kong. Tony is a fellow banker and much more.

Tony, is also a signer. Today I heard him sing Amazing Grace at our meeting. Then he sang Jesus Loves Me at dinner to just our table. Later that evening he sang some Karaoke song and showed everybody else up! Did I mention, he also played the electric key board as he sang Amazing Grace?

But, with all of his talent, they all pale in the light of his heart. During a breakout session, one of the participants asked him to give his testimony. The room was rivited by his comments. As I looked around the room, most were shedding tears as he spoke through his own tears.

Tony is a light-hearted teaser, a banker, an entertainer, a motorcycle enthusist, but most of all, he is a man in love with the Lord. And he is willing to travel around the world to help people walk with Jesus.

Hong Kong

This is an amazing city. Today I rode in a taxi, on a train, and in a personal auto. The taxi took me across town and across many really neat bridges and through a tunnel that was at least 1/2 mile long. In the personal car, I traveled through a tunnel under the Hong Kong Bay and up a mountain to what they call “The Peak” where we saw an outstanding view of downtown and the bay.

The train was fast! It took me from the heart of the city out to the airport in 20-25 minutes and I walked 5-10 minutes to my hotel. The train was EXTREMELY clean and FULL of people.

I played golf at the Hong Kong Golf Club (est. in 1886) with 3-wonderul businessmen. We had views of the mountains and of Hong Kong and of China. In fact, at some vantage points, I was not sure if I was seeing downtown Hong Kong or Shanzhen, China. Joe is Christian, using his love for golf, to lead businessmen to the Lord. He is very intentional about his efforts. I was blessed to spend over 8-hours learning from this man. What a blessing to me. I traveled 23-hours to come here to be a blessing instead, God uses this man to bless and inspire me.
