With little over 10 sq Km in area, lying on the banks of the river Ghagra or Saryu, this ancient city is believed to be the birth place of Lord Rama, the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The holy book of Hindus- the Ramayana- says, the city was founded by Manu. Later, it became the capital of the descendants of the Surya dynasty. Lord Rama was the most celebrated King of this dynasty. Known as ‘Kosaldesa’ in ancient times, the place has been described as “a city built by gods and being as prosperous as paradise itself”, in the Atharvaveda. From the time immemorial, this place has been noted for the performance of various rituals and Yajnas, including ‘Asvamedha Yajna’. From the epic and puranic ages, Ayodhya rose to prominence again in the 6th century B.C,the times of Buddha. Situated just about 10 Km from the district headquarters of Faizabad, Ayodhya is a city of temples of several religions. Various faiths have grown and prospered simultaneously and that also in different periods of time in the history. Jain traditions, for example, consider that five Tirthankaras were born at Ayodhya including Rishabhadeva, the first Tirthankar. Don’t miss the remnants of Buddhism, Hinduism, Islam and Jainism, that can still be found in Ayodhya.

Ayodhya is preeminently a city of temples yet, all places of worship here, are not only of Hindu religion. At Ayodhya several religions have grown and prospered simultaneously and also at different periods of time in the past.

THE FAMOUS HANUMAN GARHI TEMPLE

HANUMAN GARHI

This is the most famous Temple of Ayodhya. It is 2 KM Far from the the Railway Station. Situated in the center of the town, this temple is approachable by a flight of 76 steps. Legend has it that Hanuman lived here in a cave and guarded the Janambhoomi or Ramkot. The main temple contains the statue of Maa Anjani, with Bal Hanuman seated on her lap. The faithful believe that all their wishes are granted with a visit to this holy shrine. Around this temple there is a huge amount of shopkeepers selling flowers and sweets.

A massive structure in the shape of a four sided fort with circular bastions at each corner houses a temple of Hanuman and is the most popular shrine in Ayodhya.

Kanak Bhawan
This has images of Sri Rama and Sita wearing gold crowns. It is also known as Sone-ke-Ghar.According to mythology in ancient time it a palace of gold. This palace was given to Sita by Kakai.

Ramkot

The chief place of worship in Ayodhya is the site of the ancient citadel of Ramkot which stands on an elevated ground in the western part of the city. Although visited by pilgrims throughout the year, this sacred place attracts devotees from all over India and abroad, on `Ram Navami’, the day of Lord’s birth, which is celebrated with great pomp and show, in the Hindu month of Chaitra (March-April).

Nageshwarnath Temple
The temple of Nageshwarnath is said to have been established by Kush the son of Rama. Legend has it that Kush lost his armlet, while bathing in the Saryu, which was picked up by a Nag-Kanya, who fell in love with him. As she was a devotee of Shiva, Kush erected this temple for her. It is said that this has been the only temple to have survived till the time of Vikramaditya, the rest of city had fallen into ruins and was covered by dense forests. It was by means of this temple that Vikramaditya was able to locate Ayodhya and the sites of different shrines here. The festival of Shivratri is celebrated here with great pomp and splendor.

Build Ram temple in Ayodhya: Subramanian Swamy to PM Modi

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to initiate steps to rebuild the Ram temple in Ayodhya by 2016 and fulfil the party's commitment to the electorate.

In a letter to Modi, he has suggested appointment of a former Chief Justice of India like SH Kapadia as the executor who may liaise with a designated minister like Gen VK Singh.

The designated minister, Swamy said, may issue notice to the hereditary supervisor of Babri masjid asking him to formally withdraw his claim to the Ram Janmabhoomi and offer him an alternative site for a masjid to be built at public expense across the Saryu river.

New Judgement on Ayodhya Verdict

The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the Allahabad High Court's verdict on the Ramjanmbhoomi-Babri Masjid title dispute last September in which a three-judge Lucknow Bench had ruled by a majority that the disputed land at Ayodhya would be jointly held by Hindus, Muslims and the Nirmohi Akhara.

The Supreme Court criticised High Court verdict on the partition of disputed land at Ayodhya. The partition of disputed land has "opened a litany of litigation", SC said.

Apex court also termed the High Court verdict on Ayodhya as "strange".

The Supreme Court directed no religious activity be performed on 67-acre area adjacent to the disputed site.

Holding the disputed site was the birthplace of Lord Ram, the majority on the Kucknow Bench had said each party – the Hindu Mahasabha, the Sunni Waqf Board and the Nirmohi Akhara -- would be entitled to one-third share of the disputed land, with Lord Ram's idol continuing to stay at the place where he was placed.

In their separate judgements on the sensitive 60-year old title dispute on Ramjanambhoomi-Babri Masjid structure, Justices S U Khan and Sudhir Agarwal said the area under the central dome of the three-domed structure where Lord Ram's idol exists belongs to Hindus.

Justices Khan and Agarwal decreed that the 2.7 acre land comprising the disputed site should be divided into three equal parts and be given to the Sunni Waqf Board, Nirmohi Akhara and the party representing 'Ram Lala Virajman' (Ram deity).

The court dismissed the title suits of the Sunni Wakf Board and the Nirmohi Akhara. It also ordered that all parties would maintain status quo for three months.

While Justices S U Khan and Sudhir Agarwal ruled that the disputed property should be equally divided among the three parties, Justice D V Sharma, who was in the minority, stated categorically that the land belonged to the Hindus. He also said the disputed structure constructed by Mughal emperor Babur was built against the tenets of Islam and, hence, was not a mosque.

The contentious issue is certain to reach the Supreme Court, with the Sunni Wakf Board announcing that it would appeal the HC judgment.

While Justice D V Sharma said the Babri Masjid was built after demolishing a Hindu religious structure, Justice S U Khan said the mosque had been built by, or on the orders, of Babar but not by demolishing a temple. The masjid, he said was built on the ruins of a temple. He also said some material of the temple, which was in ruins, was used in construction of the mosque.

As per the judgement, the area under the central dome of the disputed structure, where Ram's idols were installed in 1949 and again in 1992, would belong to the Hindus, and the area where the sita rasoi and ram chabootara are located would belong to the Nirmohi Akhara.

Justice Khan said even though all three parties are declared to have one-third share each, "however, if while allotting exact portions, some minor adjustments in the share is to be made, then the same will be made and the adversely-affected party may be compensated by some portion of the adjoining land which has been acquired by the central government."

He also said no temple was demolished for constructing the mosque as it was built over the ruins of temple which was lying for a very long time.

In his judgement, Justice Agarwal said: "It is declared that the area covered by the central dome of the three-domed structure, i.e., the disputed structure being the deity of Bhagwan Ram Janamsthan and place of birth of Lord Rama as per faith and belief of Hindus belong to plaintiffs (party on behalf of Lord Rama) and shall not be obstructed or interfered in any manner by the defendants."

The Akhil Bharat Hindu Mahasabha, one of the main litigants in the Ayodhya title suits, moved the Supreme Court against the verdict of the Allahabad High Court by November 10.
