My Brother's Battle - Fighting Cancer Naturally, A Caretaker's Perspective

This time last year, our little family was in full-time FIGHT CANCER MODE and my brother was just beginning to improve. In February 2017, he was 2 months into his holistic Gerson approach of fighting an "Incurable" Stage 4 form of a rare form of a Non-Hodgkins B-cell lymphoma (NHL) known as Mantle Cell Lymphoma (MCL). In October of 2016, he had been given 2-4-6 months to live (depending on doc). Last February, he was in rough shape. His body had nothing to fight with. We were doing major detoxification and flooding his body with nutrients. I remember many days of being afraid to open his door because he was so bad when we started. I would go to bed afraid to sleep and so exhausted I couldn't put one foot in front of the other not sure if he would survive the occurring healing crisis and I often fell asleep praying or crying for us all. It was hard. It was emotional. It was a God-ordained season of trusting Him in every single decision, in every moment. We also had to fight and stand our ground with the hematologist about not taking chemo. That caused a lot of anxiety for us both. We would leave there feeling beat up but ready to push on no matter the consequences. My brother is one of the strongest people I know. Stubborn and headstrong. Once he made up his mind, he didn't waiver. WOW... The start of this journey... it seems like a lifetime ago.
Back home in Texas, Oct 2017. 1-year post diagnosis

His first plan, he was going to give it 6 months and re-evaluate his options. Chemo wasn't completely off the table and he was open to any and all suggestions. At the 6 month mark, his progress astounded us all and our Gerson doctor then revealed to us that Michael was the worse case Gerson had ever taken on. He described his progress as remarkable, astounding...  The last hematologist visit in May of 2017 ended so differently than it began. We were preparing to head to Texas for a summer visit our parents. As we were leaving, the doctor offered his hand as he articulated his amazement that my brother was alive and also said that Michael had plenty of time to decide what he wanted to be when he 'grew up'... He continued by sincerely offering his services if he were ever in need of them. What started out as contentious ended in May 2017 with a mutual respect and on friendly terms. Fast forward to now: After seeing the latest last lab results earlier this month, our Gerson doctor said my brother had the organ function of a high schooler. When we started, his body was eating itself, his spleen was 7 times its normal size and at risk of rupture... it is now normal or very close to it. He still has a ways to go in his recovery. The healing protocol is 2 years of hardcore rebuilding your immune system, feeding and healing the body. From that point forward, it is maintenance mode. There are things he has given up and won't do again because this is a lifestyle change, for life... for a life of quality.

When people come against us, when they tell us (STILL) it can't be done and that it natural therapies are not 'proven'  or possible...that we are crazy or spreading lies... I get frustrated and often angry...  the meanness of others, it is hard to process. Sometimes I get so mad I shut down for fear of what might come out of my mouth. The ridicule, the condemnation in the support groups, the hateful messages we receive are often hard to hear.  

But God... my brother is living proof of the ability of the body to HEAL naturally. When people talk about the risks of what he did, we respectfully ask about the risk of other available and common choices. The risks are there ...  even greater risks in our opinion. Per the candid conversation with a hematologist from Cancer Treatment Center of America: His risks were things like permanent to temporary organ damage; secondary chemotherapy-induced cancers. He told us my brother would temporarily lose his mind and that organ toxicity was a given but he'd be alive and hopefully it would be minimal. I think his honesty is one of the things that helped my brother make the decision he did. He loves life, to LIVE life... He loves to have fun. It is one of the things I admire most about him. His ability to enjoy the moment, enjoy living and his positive outlook on life... This decision to fight it holistically was a heavily researched and a heavily prayed through decision. There were doubts, questions and times we wondered if it would work. He was so far gone. The bone marrow was well over 80% involved with cancer. His spleen was huge. He was skin and bones and that got worse before it got better. I began the Gerson Basics training course before I offered to have him come live with us. From the beginning, I offered my full and unconditional support regardless of his choice of treatment. I wanted to understand what was involved on both sides. If he made the decision to go natural, I knew that he would need us to oversee and manage every detail and he was in no shape to do it alone. I never offered my opinion or told him what to do. He knows me. He knows what I believe but I wanted to honor any choice that he made. I also knew that when he asked for my input, he would listen and we could talk. We visited 5 different doctors. We saw several natural practitioners. The doctor who oversaw my brother's case every step of the way gave glory to God and that is something we don't see often enough. Dr. Donato is amazing and the best we could have asked for. We both would highly recommend his as a practitioner for anyone in need of guidance for restoring health and wellness naturally.

There are no guarantees in life. We are thankful for every day. Michael told me yesterday that even if he only lives the predicted 5 years that people get with MCL, his quality of life is better than he hoped. At the 4 month mark, he told me he felt better than he'd felt in a couple of years. Today, he feels good, he is active and living a full life back in Texas around his treatments and he is very thankful to be alive!! He is spending time with our parents and extended family. He is home where he wants to be. Our sister is helping him with meals and juicing so that he can rest more and not be completely consumed with the amount of prep needed for the full Gerson protocol. 

There are so many options to consider when fighting for your health. We want to encourage you to seek out every option, take your time and try not to respond emotionally or out of fear. The ability to do things differently is real. His very life is evidence of that fact.

Goliath and Cancer: My Brother's Battle - February 6, 2017

I have not blogged in a really long time. The busyness of life, aging parents, business, and family keep me too busy or too tired to spend the time compiling my thoughts. I'm sure most people have heard the story of David and Goliath from the Bible. David was a kid. Goliath was a giant warrior instilling fear in an entire army. But God... Goliath was defeated by a scruffy kid and his slingshot. I've found myself reflecting on David, Esther and many overcomers from the bible as we embark on my brother's battle with Stage IV Mantle Cell Lymphoma. I often need to remind myself that my strength comes from the Lord.

When my brother, Michael, was diagnosed with cancer, we were all shocked. Not that he had it as much as the type and severity of his diagnosis. We've learned a lot along the way but I still feel like it's just the tip of the iceberg.

When Michael made the decision to come live with us as he embarked on his treatment, my family made the decision to do whatever it took to walk this road with him. Our entire family is often dysfunctional, at times, a little crazy even. But when the proverbial poop hits the fan, we stand together. We don't bail. We don't quit.

Through it all, I keep coming back to Goliath. This started as a joke. On our trip back to Florida, we encountered the biggest buck deer I've ever seen (outside of TV)... He stepped right out in front of me on Hwy 287 as I was running 75 mph pulling a trailer. Both vehicles were loaded to the rim with us, a dog, his belongings and ours. Bless God, we walked away with aches and pains but nothing fatal. The airbags didn't deploy, he didn't come through the windshield and I was able to keep truck and trailer on the road. The aftermath was bad... so bad it took 3 months to repair my truck. I remember being thankful as I realized my kids and brother were okay. I knew the condition he was in, any trauma could prove fatal. My first prayer of thankfulness for our protection was immediately followed with a plea for safety until help arrived. Being out in the middle of dark-nowhere on a busy highway was terrifying. Somehow, we rolled on. Friends came to our rescue with food and reassurance, and early the next morning, our other friends brought us another truck. We were hooked to the trailer, items transferred and were on the road again headed to Florida by 10 a.m.

Goliath is my reminder. He is my name for the enormous battle we are engaged in. It is the cancer that wants to take my brother's life. It is for all the obstacles that we will face along the way. I was recently asked if my "why" was big enough to help me overcome obstacles in life, in business, in this battle. I can quickly and confidently answer, "Yes!" Only because my strength is firmly rooted in my faith. Because I know that there is a plan and purpose for my life, for my brother's life, for every single thing that happens. If you could only see the previous 12 years of my life, how circumstances and choices have prepared me for such a time as this. Because of that, I know that no matter what happens, I can trust the outcome. I can trust God no matter what comes our way, no matter what is said. It isn't and never has been an easy journey but we will choose to believe and press on.

We will continue to blog and update both this and #MyBrothersBattle. Currently, our treatment is self-funded with very little of the expenses covered by insurance. We will be fundraising for support over the next 1-2 years. We are blessed and appreciate any support, prayers, and assistance.

How we change.

A Reflection on the people, the seasons and the events that have greatly impacted and changed my life. Most of them were not pleasant at the time; however, the worse seasons of life yield great changes for good. God purposes a harvest where He plows fallow ground. (Hosea 10:12)

To name a few:

An 'incurable' (mis)diagnosis of MS and/or Lupus at 21. Along with that (mis)diagnosis I was told that I would never be able to have children, (I have 3 living, 2 lost). These (mis)diagnosis's rocked me to my core, at first. I first sought treatment first in conventional medicine (disaster) which began my never ending journey to be healthy and given me a passion for life.

A hard fought battle with E-coli and Salmonella at 23. A close encounter with death and my mortality again.

Loss. Cancer and Alzheimer's taking people I loved.

Becoming a mom at 32. Until I became pregnant, I actually believed I couldn't have children. This event made me want to be a better person, removed the blinders and began softening my hard heart. Becoming pregnant with my oldest is when I really began to take a look at the person I was and who she needed me to be. My children are my greatest blessings. This is when I really began seeing and seeking God.

Divorce. Taught me about unconditional love, honor and respect, integrity and trusting God in spite of circumstances and heartbreak. Taught me again to never quit, to get up, walk forward and press on. Still learning lessons on shame, forgiveness and judging others.

Friends and mentors who have loved me at my worst, given grace and loved and invested in us. Thankful for my longtime friends that have been there through the good and bad seasons of my life.

Bible study and teachings by incredible men and women who love God and are faithful teachers and preachers of His Word. That is a long list... beginning from a kind preacher in Happy, Texas and my grandparents and parents and growing still today.

The gifts of food, essential oils, plants, herbs God has given us for food and healing our whole body. Healing physically, emotionally and spiritually... it's all connected and God is our Healer. This passion I have for using God's gifts and His method of original medicine was born out of the earlier health struggles. It isn't alternative medicine. ;)

None of these events made me perfect. I'm still meaner than I want to be at times, struggle with life, emotions and temptation. But they have made me stronger and continue to teach me. On days like today...looking back makes me so thankful for each event and the outcome in the making. I am confident God will not leave the work He began in me unfinished. (Phil 1:6)

On the path...

There are many bible verses that I call to mind, share with my kids when times are difficult... most of them deal with faith, holding on when all things seem impossible or improbable. When I find myself wallowing in negative thought patterns, God delivers encouragement in His Word and through others.

We have been reading the bible in a chronological story format as a family the last couple of weeks. Today we finished the life of Joseph. He was betrayed and imprisoned...I can only imagine how he felt during these difficult years. Yet through it all, he clings to his faith in the God of his father Israel/Jacob. He relies on what he knows, not his circumstances.

Kay Arthur taught one time at a women's conference how God moves in the dark, He never rests or leaves us. He has a plan and purpose in every thing, every, little, thing. I have reflected on this truth countless times. This is evident throughout the life of Joseph.

Joseph was betrayed by his own family, his brothers. He was sold into slavery, sexually harassed by his master's wife, imprisoned for doing what was right. In spite of all the calamity in his life, he continued to do what was right and honor God.

There is security in the one who trusts the Lord.

When your heart is broken, trust in the Lord.

When you feel unloved, seek His love and trust in the Lord.

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.

No matter what you are facing, no matter how big your hurts, your struggles, God is at work. Trust Him, seek Him.

A look back...

Today is one of those days, sick kids, sick mom... lots of down time. One of the first things I read this morning was a post by a friend that got me thinking about broken things.

An evidence that our will has been broken is that we begin to thank God for that which once seemed so bitter, knowing that His will is good and that, in His time and in His way, He is able to make the most bitter waters sweet. ~ Brian & Christy Graves

Then a second post and text from another good friend about the things we treasure...

The last several years of the holiday season have been bittersweet but this year is definitely one I am looking forward to. Mostly because I am looking back at where we have been, pausing to really look at all the things combined that have made life so very sweet.

This Thanksgiving I began a somewhat chronological list of people that I am thankful for and I am still adding to it almost daily. As I do, I pray for that person or family. It's been amazing the people, events and conversations that have come to mind. Some which I haven't thought about years, so many sweet reminders of God's faithfulness to these four girls who once felt we had nothing but broken hearts and shattered dreams.

Looking back at a previous journal entry I find this quote I wrote...

"Just that maybe...maybe you don't want to change the story, because you don't know what a different ending holds.... There is a reason I am not writing the story and God is. He knows how it all works out, where it all leads, what it all means.....I don't. ...Maybe...I guess...it's accepting there are things we simply don't understand. But He does." ~ Ann Voskamp

Instead of looking at things with the mindset of "If only..." I can smile and reflect on these past seasons of our lives, genuinely give thanks and say, "But God..." because He is writing our story. I am learning to hold on to what will stand and savor the things that really matter.

faith and struggles...

Faith is a gift from God, a gift we can accept or refuse.

Faith is when miracles happen.

Faith can change your perspective from hopeless to hopeful.

The past is a part of who you are...but don't be imprisoned by it.

During the hardest seasons of life, faith makes perseverance possible. (Who hopes for what they already have?)

The right to vote is too great of a privilege to throw away.

I agree our system is not perfect, but it sure beats what most countries have to offer and it is shameful to scorn it.

There is no 'perfect' candidate, party or policy.

Yet, there are issues that are absolutely and morally wrong.

Vote for the safety of every American, including the unborn.

Vote to preserve the family.

America is still a country worth fighting for.

Writing in a presidential candidate or voting for an obscure party at this point, is the equivalent of throwing away your vote.

The candidate I wanted on the ticket is no longer in the race. I am choosing to vote for the man that most closely represents what I believe. Not voting would be casting a vote in favor of one that stands against what I believe and against God and His Word.

You are free to choose. You are not free from the consequences of your choice.

40 Days

Today marks 40 days until our national election.

We are in a generational relay race. What are we handing off to the next generation?

The nations are beginning to come against Israel.

Every prayer for our nation and for our government matters.

Every single vote counts.

A Time to Occupy.

There are statistics. There are warnings.

85% of evangelical youth are walking away from their faith.

The church has lost its salt. Young people are leaving the church, questioning what they believe and if they believe anything at all.

Here is Bill Nye and his opinion of the dangers of Creationsim being taught to children and his opinion of what will happen to this world view.

Most children spend 6-8 hours a day with peers being taught a humanistic and evolutionary religion as fact. If they are fortunate, they may get some bible training at home and a few hours a week from church. That doesn’t account for the time spent in sports, extracurricular activities and television. To see the 85% statistic should shock ALL parents out of their lethargy. Where is the outrage from believers when the videos from men like Bill Nye and Richard Dawkins call Creationists and believers ignorant and useless? Are we too busy? Are we to consumed with making a living that we are sacrificing our children to the world and a Godless educational system? They are being pulled to fit in and be like the peers that they are surrounded by every day. I had never heard of Bill Nye before these recent videos. Just about every kid I asked knew who he was and thought favorably of him and his programs. The schoolteachers I asked thought he was great and harmless. Not so.

It is more than just the evolution issue and doesn't stop with the science and evolution. Our nations history books are inaccurate. Our children are being taught lies as facts. The American education system has removed almost every trace of the faith of the Founding Fathers of our great nation. The removal of God from our nation will bring destruction. Read your bible. Study history. The outcome of the nations that have forsaken God is not a pleasant one. Too many churches are watering down doctrine to appeal to the masses and 'fit in.' We are loving our evangelical children to hell not teaching them His Word and educating them to know how to defend and stand for their faith. As these educated men mock God, most people do or say little to nothing. We will answer to God for doing nothing. We are accountable for the not only what we do but what we do not do. We are called to "Occupy until He comes" (Luke 19:13) This verse does not mean occupy a pew for a few hours a week and call it good.

The statistics bear witness the to the impact our culture has already seen from of teaching evilution and removing God. These things are neither irrelevant nor insignificant. Removing God from the history of how our nation began is detrimental. So, I ask, where are the parents and churches equipping and teaching the importance of Genesis 1:1? Why are we not teaching the science that proves impossibility of evolution? Why isn't there an outcry to teach the accurate history of America and the truth about the men who founded our country? Why is the evidence of how and WHY they risk everything to come here being ignored and erased? Why aren't parents and churches coming together to offer something other than public education? Parents send their children to public schools with the mentality of "not my kid, it won't change our family"... Wake up! The odds are not in anyone's favor.

Biblically, we are clearly instructed to teach our children, all the time. Teach them the things of God. Hosea 4:6 should scare the hell out of every believer. How the pagans and unbelievers choose to teach their children is their free choice, we are not supposed to join them. If you are a believer, then examine Luke 6:46 and ask yourself why are our children being taught lies. Why are we joining the culture instead of going against it?

I urge you to watch these videos. Pull your head out of the sand and see the writing on the wall. Is God and His Word the Authority? Are we, as a body of believers, as a church, as a nation, too far gone that we cannot reclaim one nation under God?

Watch or worship?

There is music that can stir my soul, bring tears to my eyes and there is music that makes me fight the urge to check my watch and people watch. Many others I know are really struggling in this area, right or wrong, music is tied to worship and wrongly worship is tied to only being in church. Conversations with many others about worship the last few months have been frequent. These conversations have made me really take a look at what I am modeling before my children in the area of worship. If I teach them worship is going to church and standing/sitting on cue, singing a hymn and always followed by listening to a sermon, I am failing miserably. This has made me ask myself the question, "Do I watch or do I worship?" Lately, I have watched and reflected. Watched to see my children’s faces, to get a glimpse into their hearts. Now I am looking at my own.

When my firstborn was little, she would raise her hands, sing with all her might. She would listen intently and praise freely. Many witnessed the change of an entire service from this four year old belting out "Praise the Lord!" during a combined worship service with a visiting church in Texas. I see the freedom of play and singing in my young children now. I also see it slipping away and being stifled in the one place we are supposed to be worshipping and learning about God, in church.

Here are two portions from the definition of the word worship.

The feeling or expression of reverence and adoration for a deity.
Extravagant respect or admiration for, or devotion to, an object of esteem.

In 2 Samuel we see a worshiper and a watcher. David worshiping freely while his wife watched becoming angry and judgmental as he danced and worshiped with all his might. She didn’t want to be carried away with it all and despised him in her heart. She then even goes so far as to call King David vulgar in his act of worship.

Now go back and look at Job. He didn’t realize that he was in a spiritual battle nor did he know he would later go on to be an example for us. Job worshiped in grief, extreme loss and physical pain. When the life he knew was suddenly and horrifically sideswiped by tragedy after tragedy, he chose to worship. His worship wasn’t scripted, manufactured or acted out. He had a choice; he worshiped God. As his wife watched, she told him that he should curse God and die.

Worship is about letting go and becoming fully aware of God. These are a few of the songs I sang and shared with my kids this morning as we did our school work. Enjoy and worship freely! The last one has a particularly strong message.

Needing change?

I believe there comes a time in every person's life where we reach the point where we realize a change is needed.

Maybe a time of crisis.

Maybe a time of sadness, emptiness, or loss.

Maybe a change of perspective.

But we know, something needs to change.

Reading the Bible in 90 Days

I came across a tweet one year with the hashtag #B90Days. Curious, I began to check it out. I joined and committed to reading the entire bible from cover to cover. I read portions of it on my iPhone through YouVersion and my bible. I finished it! I had reminders set on my phone to help keep me accountable. I had a friend texting me in the early mornings to keep me going. I loved being part of the group. The next time I facilitated a group and tried to encourage others as I had been encouraged. This session a couple of friends and I are doing the Chronological plan.

Regardless of the plan chosen, this is doable. In less than the time spent watching an episode of NCIS or the dancing talent shows on TV, you can read the bible in 90 days.... Most of us probably spend more time than that each day on Facebook, Pinterest, blogs or Twitter...

A Mom's Book Review of Evolution Impossible

Evolution Impossible – 12 Reasons Why Evolution Cannot Explain the Origin of Life on Earth by Dr. John F. Ashton

The forward written by Emeritus Professor Warren Grubb, PhD, reminds the reader that the basis of scientific research is to find the truth, and scientists, of all people, are supposed to have open minds and be willing to look at all the evidence. In my humble opinion, this book makes my must read list. Particularly, for those who went through school learning evolution and also going to church and hearing bits and pieces on creation. It is also a great book for parents, educators and older students that would like a well-organized summary on a mountain of evidence.

People (too many) do not have a strong understanding of creation, evolution or intelligent design. Take the time answer a life changing question,

"Why do I believe what I believe?"

Ironically, evolution is taken ‘on faith’ just as is creation. This book clearly presents a surprising large amount of both historical and scientific evidence regarding the catastrophic global flood, evolution, age of the earth, fossils, missing fossils, DNA, dating systems and more.

Evolution, the big-bang model and the aforementioned teachings are being taught in schools, colleges and universities as fact because it is most popular among scientists, teachers and leaders. There are those who do not want to bring any notion of God into the classroom. There are those who are too intimidated to rock the boat or, flatly do not care enough to do anything different. These theories have become so ingrained in the educational curriculum that it is now considered and taught as fact when the evidence is clearly not there to support these theories.

This book is not the opinion and beliefs of a man but a collection of many highly qualified and respected scientists and researchers and facts that are deliberately hidden from the secular classrooms. One word I have used to describe this book is captivating. While reading this book, I learned many new things. This book is well footnoted with many additional sources of information. There was a section that I struggled to understand regarding the technical/math side of the dating methods but I never lost interest in the book or material I was reading. It is under 200 pages, packed with information, written in an interesting and challenging format.

There are many days that I think, "if only, if only things were different... if only so and so did this or that things wouldn't be this way...there wouldn't be soooo much hurt!"

I have made judgments on the choices of others. I used to find myself thinking that I would do things differently. Truth is, until we walk through it, not one of us knows how we handle any specific tragedy.

Too often my inbox has emails from broken and hurting women. Porn, divorce, betrayal, abuse...hurting and rejected women and children. It can become overwhelming and discouraging.

But today I picked up a book my daughter gave me. The words on a page jump out at me, highlighted in yellow crayon.

"Just that maybe...maybe you don't want to change the story, because you don't know what a different ending holds.... There is a reason I am not writing the story and God is. He knows how it all works out, where it all leads, what it all means.....I don't. ...Maybe...I guess...it's accepting there are things we simply don't understand. But He does." One Thousand Gifts by Ann Voskamp, page 21.

Although I do not know what this day holds, I trust the One Who does.

Increased divorce rate.

Gone are the days of things being done on a handshake or a person's word meaning anything.
Family dinners are a rarity.
Sex trafficking.
Respect for others, respect for life is rapidly disappearing.
Lying makes you famous, is even applauded while telling the truth is becoming irrelevant.
Love your neighbor? Consideration of others is becoming another bygone.

How many people would be thrilled to receive a check for $54,559,615.00? What would you buy? Think of all the good you could do! That is a lot of money. Fifty four million, five hundred fifty nine thousand, six hundred fifteen dollars. Imagine that amount of money. Yet that number means nothing when it is the number of estimated aborted babies since Roe v. Wade in 1973 (Jan 2012). It is quickly dismissed and labeled a choice.

Our country is unhealthy. Our priorities have been hi-jacked. It doesn't need a pill, a program or a new president promising change.

We are responsible for the culture we live in. We are responsible. We are responsible.

We are also responsible for making the change we wish to see. The 'American dream' is becoming a nightmare.

Consider a moment the firestorm Mr. Cathy (Chick-fil-A) caused by stating his support of biblical and family values. The majority of American's claim to be Christian, claim to want these same values. Now this is considered hate and bigotry? He expressed his beliefs as an individual (in a free country) he did not refuse service or discriminate against a person based on any contrary belief. The mayor of Boston (government official) vows to ban his business from 'his' city.

Are we too self-absorbed, too busy, too burdened to care? To fight? To speak out? To make a difference? On a whole, it seems overwhelming, impossible even. Is this the nation you want left for the next generation?

Each of these things are connected. No domestic trend is more threatening to the well-being of our nation than the breakdown of the family. Raise your voice. Get involved. Speak up. Vote. Never quit. Never get tired of doing what is right.

And also eat at Chick-fil-A. =)

Hello! I haven't blogged in a while. We ended school a little early for an important trip to Texas to tend to family matters. It has been really busy around here this year. As a result, we unplugged as a family and I have been limiting my time online. We unplugged the TV and other than a couple of movies or watching the tropical storm, it hasn't been on.

Several months ago, I joined a group on Facebook that reads and reviews books published by Master Books. Because I love to read and study, I happily welcomed the opportunity!

The timing could not be more perfect because our Sunday school group just started studying apologetics this year. I know that I will use the Henry Morris Study Bible for many years to come.

I highly recommend this study bible. This is a substantial book in size, weight and most importantly, content. This bible is written using the standard King James Version as basic text. This bible follows a literal approach to the Bible and supports literal biblical creationism.

Dr. Morris is known to both believers and skeptics alike as "the father of modern creation science." After a few times using this bible, I knew it will be a favored and invaluable resource for my own personal bible study and also will be used homeschooling my children. This bible is great for anyone who wants to be ready to give an answer for what they believe. It will become a treasured resource, especially in the area of apologetics.

I remember in September 1999 picking up and literally dusting off my bible and opening up to the book of Matthew. I sat there reading and thinking nothing made sense. I remember verbalizing how I wish I could understand; wondering why it didn't make sense. I thought of the desire I had as a little girl to know God, to do what was right and wondering what happened to her.

I was that girl. Raised right, good family.

I broke rules, I did everything wrong.

I lived outside the box, I spit my bit.

I did what I wanted regardless of what others thought.

I never thought about hurting others or consequences of my choices.

Ten commandments, knew about them, broke them all, every one...often.

Fast forward to November 1999.

Doctor's office, test results.

Good news = not cancer.

I spent years running from God; from what I knew to be true.

The power of the words a doctor wrote on that paper...

Two words circled in red ink that changed my life.

'POS PREG'

Those two words made me stop and think about my life, my purpose.

That was THE defining moment of my life.

Everything changed. The blinders had been removed.

God began the process of removing the heart of stone and giving me a heart for Him.

I still mess up, make big mistakes, say the wrong things and struggle.

I am not who I used to be; yet, I know I never want to go back.

I am a new creation.

I am a new person.

I want to keep moving forward, growing and learning.

God gave me a vision that day of what my little girl would look like, who she could be.
I knew at that moment, I was at a crossroads. I had a choice before me.
A blessing or a curse for us both.

Life or death.
I thought hard about the 'legacy' I wanted to leave for her.
I thought about the life I wanted her to have.
I thought about my parents and grandparents, the life they lived.
I knew it was past time to make a change, one that would matter.

I took that step of faith that day and I have never regretted it. Following Jesus has been costly in ways I never could have imagined. Honest to God, it has been worth it all.

Thank you Lord for answering a simple little prayer of a broken girl that day who had lost her way. Thank you for giving me the strength and courage to follow You every day.

A Letter To Your Spouse

Every marriage will have trouble, if you haven't, you will. Every person will be tempted, tested and walk through some sort of struggle, some great, some small. Each one brings a test on our character and our relationship with God and others.

In our connection group/Sunday school class, Jenny Thompson (click to here to read her blog) taught on marriage and divorce. There was a lot of digging in God's Word, a lot of opinions and hurts thrown out there. What I have always loved about the women I know who study God's Word is their commitment to Truth instead of opinions, ideas and commentary. Jenny shared a quote with us that I think every married person should take to heart and re-write in their own words to their spouse.

“I didn't marry you because you were perfect. I didn't even marry you because I loved you. I married you because you gave me a promise. That promise made up for your faults. And the promise I gave you made up for mine. Two imperfect people got married and it was the promise that made the marriage. And when our children were growing up, it wasn't a house that protected them; and it wasn't our love that protected them - it was that promise.” ~ Thornton Wilder, The Skin of Our Teeth

Marriage is hard. It is a covenant before God, a union that is to model Christ to others, between one man and one woman. Be a warrior for your spouse, for your marriage and for the gift you have been given in marriage. Be both willing and purposeful in your life to stand firm in your promise.

Divorce 101.

There are several people in my life right now walking away from their marriages for the wrong reasons. One very close to me that needs to seek help or protection until things change, yet refuses to. If only men and women would love one another, the kind of love that throws itself under the bus to protect the other one. I often imagine the impact believers would have if only....

Hear this: WHEN there is abuse and adultery involved, protect yourself and your family. For some, there comes a time when you have to close the door to someone in your life that hurts and abuses you. Specifically, when they are refusing to repent, to change and seek help. You cannot change someone who doesn't want to change nor is it your job to so. But leaving a marriage because you cannot get along; grown apart or because someone other than your spouse has turned your head, is wrong! We should be fighting harder FOR our marriages than against it.

Never think for one moment divorce is easy. LIE.
You may be thinking someone else can rock your world and make it all better. LIE.
Never believe that it won't hurt your kids. LIE.
Divorce Myths: 1. When love has gone out a marriage, it is better to get divorced. 2. It is better for the children for the unhappy couple to divorce than to raise their children in the atmosphere of an unhappy marriage. 3. Divorce is the lesser of two evils. 4. You owe it to yourself. 5. Everyone's entitled to one mistake. 6. God led me to this divorce. (RC Sproul)

Even when you have to leave; your children's world will be torn apart. They are not resilient; they don't bounce back or just get over it, not ever. One day they will see and understand if you had to do it for their protection and yours. It is a difficult road to walk. God does heal our wounds and He will be a Father to the fatherless. He is faithful. He never leaves us nor forsakes us. However, the consequences of our choices; those scars and hurts will be there for the rest of our lives and theirs. That is the sad reality of it no matter "why" it happens. If you are in this place, prayerfully weigh each decision, prayerfully seek Godly counsel of more than one person.

If you find yourself having to leave and/or seek divorce, make the choice to live YOUR life seeking and walking with the Lord. Humble yourself before the Lord; pray for your spouse no matter the outcome. If your spouse is willing, God will change their hearts and bring them home. Regardless, let Jesus heal your hurts. Let Him give you comfort. Let Him hear your cries. Never give up on doing what is right. You will not find happiness jumping into another relationship, at the bar, in a bottle or pills. (1 Cor 6:19-20) Your children need to see Christ modeled in at least one parent if it cannot be both. Both the church and the world need to see courageous men and women stop this foolishness; get up and follow Him no matter what is going on in their lives. To many people call themselves 'Christians' yet go their own way. (Luke 6:46)

If you know someone who is divorced or going through one, do not ignore them or treat them as if something is wrong with them. You may not understand or know what to say but kindness, acceptance and probably a friend is what is really needed. Don't judge or pity them, love them instead. Be a friend to them as you would want to have if something cataclysmic happened in your life. They may need nothing more than someone to listen to them. Above all, pray for them.

Lastly, if you know someone who is choosing to compromise, or about to break up their family...love them enough to speak truth to them. They may not hear it; they may get mad at you. It may even cost you a friendship.

Love them enough to do it anyway.

Life. Death. Purpose.

Tuesday, January 3rd was the last day of our families Christmas vacation before we started back to the routine of school and tighter schedule. I began celebrating this day with a trip to Dunkin Donuts with the girls.

As they enjoyed their donuts and I sipped my hot coffee, I received a call from my sister. One of my uncles had been tragically killed in a work related accident. It took a little bit to set in. It didn't seem right. Solomon was only 40. I hadn't seen him in years but my childhood is filled to the brim with many favorite memories with all my aunts and uncles and our trips to see them each summer. Life gets busy. Things change, they move, we move and we lose touch. But the love is there and my heart hurts for each of my family members who are also grieving his death; the loss of someone who was greatly loved and admired. Family is family, forever. Too many miles, marriage, children, politics and religion will never change that. I have been deeply saddened for many reasons at Solomon's death. I miss my aunts and uncles. I miss not seeing them and knowing them and their children.

My uncle Gilbert quoted on facebook something my aunt Rosa often tells her kids. She says,

"Live everyday ready for it to be your last, be sure that you are prepared. Cherish each moment and always let the ones you love know it."

I remember when they were dating and the party line Granddaddy had at the farmhouse in Carlsbad. It was a small house filled to the brim with people and one bathroom...) but most importantly it overflowed with love. She's right. We should live our life on purpose, prepared for each day to be our last, prepared to meet Jesus face to face. We also need to be purposeful in everything we do, every choice we make, big and small.

As I have gone through family facebook pages and my own family memories, I began wondering what if today were "the last day" for me? ...what would people see, remember and miss? What would they read on my FB page, what would our kids share with others about our lives? What is my legacy?

I have prayed a lot for my family, for their families. More importantly, I have been blessed with an outpouring of love for my family by many of my friends and church family for my extended family....we are a large group; full of disFUNctional but a group of incredible people. Life is short and we don't know when our last day will be. My mom is the oldest of all the Robert's kids, one died at birth and now Solomon leaving behind 2 brothers and 8 sisters. Solomon didn't wake up with the knowledge of it being his last day but it is a reminder to each of us of the brevity of our lives. We are each given a number of days. I was reading Psalm 39 and it speaks of our numbered days and making the most of the time we have been given.

Live life with purpose. Through this tragedy, God has also given me "purpose" as my One Word for 2012. May God bless each family member and person that knew and encountered Solomon Roberts. May they each and every one personally know Jesus as Lord and Savior. May they purposely pass that legacy on to their children. ~ Amen.

What does it mean to live a counter-cultural life? Is it a life with a bunch of rules, boring and devoid of fun?

There are many worthwhile pursuits in the world today. But one we should consider...How about the training of children to follow the Lord and keep His commandments? What about our children's children?

Are sports, social events, even education more important than faith? Is faith at the background of what we do instead of at the forefront in all we do? Are Christian parents, raising and preparing the next generation of children to think biblically in a world that is becoming more and more intolerant and downright hostile towards the bible and Christian faith? Don't be deceived, it will get worse. They will be called to stand in ways that we may not be.

It is time to change our stinking thinking. Start seeing the responsibility we have to leave behind a faith that is multi-generational. We need an outlook with an eternal mindset. Every choice we make has an impact.

Our priority in that 'sphere of influence' must be our children.

As we draw 2011 to a close and start thinking about the New Year.... consider Matthew 18:1-6: At that time the disciples came to Jesus, saying, "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" And calling to him a child, he put him in the midst of them and said, "Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. "Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea.

Attainable

I recently met a woman who issued us a challenge of picking words out of conversation and digging into their meanings. I decided to start taking these words and looking how they fit into our lives. She had us start a "Journal of Words" that we encounter. Recently the words impossible and unattainable have made it into my journal. Both from different conversations, but each used while discussing goals, desires and expectations.

The words impossible and unattainable are really just excuses not to try.

I kept mulling over these words and thinking how often these words are used before we even begin things. We all have dreams and goals. We all hope for change. Sometimes we try things and the door closes or it fails and we end up feel discouraged and hurt. This can be especially confusing or hard when we felt it was something we were supposed to do. Personally, I have struggled with doing what's right and still it not working out the way it's supposed to be or should be. If I dwell on those things, I quickly find myself discouraged and wanting to give up.

I like Winston Churchill's quote about never, never, never give up. Most people we consider life or world changers have a history of failing. What makes them great is they get up, keep trying, keep fighting, they don't quit. They don't not do something just because it seems impossible or too hard. Maybe someones failure may just be what is needed to move forward, change a heart or perspective towards a situation or even towards another person. The key is not to give up, not to quit. Alex Kendrick (Actor & writer Courageous, Fireproof) said in an recent interview, "Would you rather have an easier road with less fruit or a harder road with more fruit?" He went on to say, "Is God only worth being worshiped when He's good to you or is He worthy of our worship because He is God?"
