Google offers FREE CALLS to US and Canada

This calls for celebration! Finally, the Google Voice and video chat service via GMail have been rolling out not just in US territory but (in some places) around the world. It allows Google users to make free calls to US and Canada which is the greatest thing. It offers cheap calls to other countries too.

In order to start calling, you should have a GMail account first and when you do, check if the Google Voice chat is available to you. If its not available, don’t worry, it will eventually be there within the week or the next. Remember, patience is a key! Now you have to install the plugin that will enable you to make calls. Download and Install the FREE VOICE AND VIDEO CHAT PLUGIN here.

Once you’ve done installing the plugin, Sign back in to your GMail, a new “Call phone” option will appear. Just click on call and you can start calling.

What makes it amazing is, It calls the recipient using a local phone number and carrier same with the recipient. With the existing unlimited voice call services of the local carrier that perhaps makes it cheap.

Yes, registration is available anywhere in the country, and once registered, you can make unlimited calls and texts to any Globe or TM number anywhere in the country.

For pre-paid and postpaid subscribers, after the successful registration, you need to change the 0 at the start of the number you are calling to 238 to avail of the free or unlimited calls. (e.g 23891xxxxxxxx).

8. What will happen to my call if I use 238 prefix in calling a Globe or TM number but I am not registered to Globe Super-Unli?

For postpaid subscribers, calls using 238 prefix will be successfully connected but will be charged regular mobile rates depending on the subscription plan. However, for prepaid subscribers, calls using 238 prefix will not be connected. Prepaid subscribers must register first before using 238 prefix.

9. What will happen to my call if I don't use the 238 prefix in calling a Globe or TM number but I am registered to Globe Super-Unli?

While subscribed to Super-Unli and you call without using the 238 prefix, your calls to Globe and TM will be charged the regular rates (P6.50 per minute for prepaid / and applicable rates based on your plan for post-paid).

10. How do I avail of the unlimited texting?

Upon successful registration to Super-Unli, all SMS to Globe / TM within 5 days or 120 hours will be free of charge. To register for Super-Unli, text SUPER150 to 2824.

11. How much will I be charged if I made calls to other networks?

Yes, you can avail other Call promos like Tawag236, Sakto Calls, Duo and P10/3mins even if you're registered to Globe SUPER-UNLI but these calls will be charged on top of your SUPER-UNLI subscription depending on the promo rate. You just have to use the correct calling syntax for the promo you want to use. However while registered to SUPER-UNLI you cannot avail of UNYT CALLS and U-CALL promos.

While registered to SUPER-UNLI you may not avail of SMS promos such as Everybodytxt, Sulitxt and Unlitxt (all day, daytime and nighttime), and TEXTOTHERS but you may avail of Immortaltxt.

25. Can I register to SUPER-UNLI while my previous registration to other promos are still active?

You may register to SUPER-UNLI while you are registered to Duo. However if you have an active registration to U-CALL, Unlicalls Nyt, Everybodytxt, Sulitxt, Unlitxt, and Text Others, you may not register to SUPER-UNLI. You have to wait for your subscription to expire before you can register again.

26. Are local video calls part of SUPER-UNLI?

No, local video calls are not part of the unlimited calls when subscribed to SUPER-UNLI. Video calls will be charged the normal rate for Video Calls while subscribers are on SUPER-UNLI.

27. I still have free SMS in my account. What will happen to my FREE SMS once I subscribe to SUPER-UNLI?

For Prepaid subscribers subscribing to SUPER-UNLI, any FREE SMS in your account will be used should you text subscribers of OTHER NETWORKS. SUPER-UNLI will cover your Globe to Globe and Globe to TM text messages.

For Postpaid subscribers any FREE SMS from your plan will be consumed after the expiration of SUPER-UNLI.

I'm a PC and More Happy is Coming

Remember the cute Kylie who used Windows Live Gallery to sent pictures to her mom and dad? Yeah, the four and half year old kid! She's back with more cuteness and more happy things to share.

When I was about to tweet in my tweetdeck I saw an amazing tweet that says "Windows 7 commercial strikes an odd note" and so I clicked the link and there's this video of Kylie.

In my point of view, Microsoft is doing a great job when they use (not exploit) those children to advertise their product. One of those kids is Kylie. We first saw her early this year with the Live Gallery TV ads - "I am a PC and I'm Four and half." Microsoft tries to convey that Windows is so easy to use, a four year old can run. Unlike Mac, The PC remains still the dumb-friendly. Despite, the fact that the PCs are prone to viruses, it still holds the larger amount of market because its cheap and very easy to get.

Now it's time for me to boast that I AM A PC and I started using it when I was FIVE. :)

Being an engineering student of University of Santo Tomas, I find myself having an immense enthusiasm for IT-related field. Having enrolled in this course was not a choice for me but rather a call that needs to be answered. It still fresh and I can well remember that harrowing day when I failed my topmost choice courses in this University. I passed all the programs that the Faculty of Engineering is offering but not the course of my choice. Despite that disconcerting time of my life, my mom and dad were very supportive and told me that it has a good purpose. When I enrolled myself in this course, I’ve learned that they were right. The best is yet to come.

Microsoft values the importance of education and so they are not just eyeing for the gold but eyeing for the ones who will make the gold. Microsoft Student Partner Program is a notion that confers recognition to selected students of engineering universities who are well- au fait with the sphere they have been called. Who are qualified? Everyone can join the program especially if you are passionate enough about technology and if you love to impart and advance your skills and knowledge to others.

It was Ms. Mellie Valimento, a program support specialist for Microsoft Philippines who gave the talk about how Microsoft indulge itself in helping students like me to excel and improve my skills. She showcased the projects of Microsoft to value education. Number one on the line was the MSDN Academic Alliance or MSNDAA. According to her (as stated in the website), the MSDN Academic Alliance is the easiest and most inexpensive way for academic departments to make the latest Microsoft software available in labs, classrooms, and on student PCs. The program, which is available in more than 45 countries worldwide, has two primary goals:
• To make it easier and less expensive for academic institutions to obtain Microsoft developer tools, platforms, and servers for instructional and research purposes.
• To build a community of instructors who can share curriculum and other learning resources to support the use of these technologies.
Next was the program discussed above, The MSP or Microsoft Student Partner. From time to time, Microsoft conducts training sessions, workshop activities for Student Partners worldwide. Through those learning experiences they can share their know-how to those of students in the campus. Joining the MSP is easy. All you have to do is to email your resume and have a letter of reference from your IT Professors.

As of now UST has not yet come up with a campus agreement with Microsoft; Which I suggest they should be focusing on. The advantage of this will be greatly seen as the students need not to buy pirated or not-genuine software because each and every student and also the professors will have the chance to get access to many of Microsoft’s academic software without having to pull money from our parents pocket as it is free of cost. Being a Student Partner will really help students increase their expertise when it comes to technological aspects.

The good speaker had a demo of what is going to be like in MSDNAA. One of the software it offers is the new Windows 7. Windows 7 is the new OS of Microsoft. It will be available in the market this 22nd of October. It is perfect for students like me, who deals with programs, database and media. She discussed how the Windows 7 will improve our study habits and performance with its State-of-the-art technology.

I’m hoping that the university will soon offer the MSDNAA for students. It will help us a lot in terms of installing software we used in school in our very own computers at home without having to spend lots of Pesos in buying those software.

For over 5 years now, the Philippines was introduced to a new world of what can internet has to proffer. It was around 2003 when the first social networking website has become a craze in internet cafes and networks at home. Students, Teachers, People at work talk about adding them in their friends list, giving them new testimonials and uploading their best photos and what they talk about? Friendster! Who amidst us can forget our very first Friendster account, friends from other regions whom we don’t personally know, and the testimonial that says “Thanks for the invite.” Greatly, the Philippines was captivated by the storm the Friendster created. In fact, Philippines has the most number of Friendster users around the globe not until the Facebook and MySpace were introduced.

Neither did I know that Social Networking is now being used for school and business setting. A little trip down memory lane – Facebook or FB was started by Mark Zuckerberg in Harvard University around 2004 and its access was exclusively for Harvard Students, Faculty and Administrator. Its original purpose was for educational use and a tool for communications between students. It took 2 years before it was opened for public. Now, it has over a hundred million users. Twitter, in contrast, was launched in 2006 after the Facebook was made to public. It was pioneered by Jack Dorsey, Biz Stone and Evan Williams as an internal project within their organization for communication purposes. It was the first micro-blogging site initially designed for SMS.

The hearts and minds of Pilipino were certainly enthralled by that of Twitter and Facebook (FB). Artists, Model, Corporations even Grandmas and Grandpas have Twitter and FB account. Familiar with the Bayantel TV ads? An old lady there was using computer and having a video chat with his grandson whom she Super Poke many times in Facebook but just rebuffed her and decided to tweet that JR.(her grandson) is no longer her favourite. For those who are not familiar with Super Poke, it is a feature of Facebook which allows you to caught one of your friend’s attention. It was 29th of August when a colloquium about Twitter and Facebook was sponsored by 3-ITA. The speaker was Mr. Jacinto A. Limjap Jr. He is a graduate of De La Salle University and a certified PHINUG/MS MVP for C#, senior software design engineer for Cormant Technologies, net consultant and web developer.

The speaker conferred a brief history of interconnection or internet/intranet in the Philippines. It all fired up with BBS (bulletin board service), Telnet, Email, IRC such as dalnet and undernet, Forumboards such as peyups.com and PinoyExchange. Next were the vogue in blogging networks like LiveJournal and Blogger, enthusiasm in Photo Sharing as those of Flickr and Shutterfly, Social Networking akin to Friendster, Multiply, Faceboo, Video Sharing – the world known, YouTube and lastly, the Micro-blogging like Twitter, Plurk, and Jaiku.

It was to aggregate mood and to provide information on travels, family, events, careers and romance – the main principle of social networking. That’s why you can always see and read from other people’s FB and Twitter account their mood or emotions in that very own moment, feel for that person if he felt sore, tired and exhausted. For more excitement and other means of connecting through your accounts, API is being used and developed.

API or application programming interface defines the ways by which an application program may request services allowing third parties to extend functionality. It was developed to promote the use of features of social networks. API allows you to access your account via Phone Browser, Phone Inbox and in your desktop.

When I was new in twitter, I mostly tweet in the web-based format or in their website which is twitter.com. As reading through other tweets, I learned that there are software you can download and install in your system to access your Twitter account without having signing in to a web browser. This application looks like a Yahoo! Messenger. Without API, the boring web-based twitter will not be as hip as I feel and see it right now. API gives more benefits. However, there are APIs which were dangerous as it store your personal data and send it thru internet. There are also APIs that spam user by sending neither words nor tweets of your choice.

Likewise, it offers the first no-expiration SMS service. With IMMORTALTXT you will have 50 texts to both Globe and TM and 10 texts to other network. Moreover, you can register as much as you want. All you just have to do is to repeat the registration process.

For example, you have 100 pesos. You will have to register or Type-in IMMORTAL10 and send it to 8888, 10 times and that will give you 500 texts to Globe and TM and 100 texts to other network plus YOU DON’T HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT THE EXPIRATION just maintain P1 load to use the service. Isn’t that amazing?!

Should you be registered but have used up your load due to texts on top of the IMMORTALTXT allocation, you will not be able to use you IMMORTALTXT until you reload at least P1 in your account.

11. How will I know that my IMMORTALTXT subscription has expired?
Text IMMORTALBAL to 8888 to request for a status update of your subscription. You will receive a reply message that will indicate the following:
• Number of texts to Globe/TM left in the subscription
• Number of texts to other networks left in the subscription. The remaining FREE SMS in the account will be added to the free texts to other networks and will be included in the reply message.
You will be charged P1.00 for the balance inquiry.
Subscriber will receive the following message:
"You have remaining XX texts to Globe/TM and XX texts to other networks. Your texts to other networks have been added to your account's text balance. P1/text."

Nokia is serious in making a mobile PC and this time, it has Intel in it. It isn’t just mobile phone but literally pc in your hands plus the mobile features.

Most techie said that N97 and 5800 are the Nokia’s iPhone killer as they keep on flaunting N97 as a handheld and mobile personal computer. Will the Nokia Booklet 3G is made to kill Macbooks??

It has a SIM CARD SLOT for 3g/hsdpa that will allow you to access your mails, open maps and download music without having connecting to a wifi hotspot.
The battery life comparing to other notebook is heaps greater with the battery lasting up to 12 hours.

It runs on Intel Atom. Since it will be released early next year, I think, OS that will run in the latest Nokia creation will be the newest Microsoft OS which is Windows 7 and given the fact that today’s world are the Era of HIGH DEFINITION , there will be HDMI port for those who would like to connect it to LCDs and LEDs.

You are new in a company and you worked as a database personnel. Your supervisor noticed your potential to have bigger responsibility since you are doing great and a graduate of Information Systems that is very much particular with databases. The company you worked in just outsources the managing and controlling of the database of the organization and suddenly decided to shift to another DBMS company because of some technical problems where there are mismatched of software and hardware peripherals. You learned that there are offers from IBM, Oracle and Apple to do the job. Having asked by the board, your supervisor suggested starting to work a Database Management System from your own to minimize operating cost and he thinks your company could do better. The directors and members of the board are positive with the idea and instructed your supervisor to do feasibility study. Having done the feasibility, it strongly vouches for a building of the company’s own database. Most of the computer unit in your company is now using Mac but the database of the outsourced company is a Windows-based so there are distinct unit for it. An employee who wants to update add or delete a record in a database will have to go to a defined station in order to do so. To eradicate that kind of scenario, your supervisor is thinking to build a Mac-based database that will allow employees of the organization to access records and file without going to a distinct station. August 21st marks the death anniversary of Benigno S. Aquino Jr. It is also the day the PowerMac Centre has given a free seminar about handling and starting a Database Management of course using Mac. The event was held on a sunny afternoon in the newly built SM North Edsa the Annex where you can see the PowerMac Centre. I learned about the seminar from their website – www.powermaccenter.com/training.php . From the title of this essay you can construe that the training was about managing a database or the so-called computerised collection of data. As it was an Apple store, you don’t imagine seeing computers running in Windows OS neither the applications but there are some stand-alone softwares can be run in a Mac like the software the speaker used to have a demo of the topic. The speaker started the presentation with the definitions of term such as database where she defined the term database as collection of logically related and organised data.

The trainer for that sunny afternoon was Ms. Georgelyn M. Francisco, ACSP, MCTTP, MCTS. She justly knew what she was doing and certainly master every database she mentioned we can use. These database are office for Mac(excel), iCal, eagledata, filemaker, PostgreSQL and bento. Although, the Address Book, iCal and iWork are not database application; it helps in creating a database yet it runs only in Mac OS. Filemaker, on the other hand, create databases easily like FileMaker Resource Center and FileMaker Quick Start Screen and it runs in both Mac and Windows environment.

The venue is vaguely suitable for learning for there is no distinct area for training. The training is open for all. There is this one lady who owned a Macbook Pro was sitting in front eagerly listening. Since there is no distinct area for the training, the attendees are distracted from the noise the people who inquire Mac laptops.
The seminar runs 2 hours because there were no opening remarks, ice breaker, induction, and other stuff. It’s merely the topic itself so I thought, it was great because no time is being wasted. The topic is quite boring but the speaker still manages to catch our attention as she delivers her training. She has given us overview of those products mentioned and taught us the basics.

Only 6 from our class attended the seminar. I remember seeing Ms. Maricel Afurong in the event. As we know, she is teaching DBMS in 3rd year students so it is very constructive and advantageous not only for students but for mentors like her who teach students as it advances and widens our knowledge.
Who told you that you can learn best in a classroom? Learning needs interaction as its primary tool. Moreover, learning doesn’t have always to be on the four corners of a classroom. There are lots of places you can learn and one of these places is the street or the outside world where you can really learn best and become a street smart.
