In the quarterfinals in Liverpool, against Portugal, the N.Koreans almost engineered another remarkable upset. Right at the beginning, the Koreans set a strong, very fast pace, and racked up 3-0 leads against astonished Portuguese team. They only began to recover their composure after the great Eusebio scored 2 goals before the end of the first half, reducing the difference to 2-3. In the 2nd half, the Portuguese strength won out, and the final score was 5-3, with 4 goals for Eusebio, and Portugal went on to the semifinals.

The USSR also went on after beating Hungary 2-1, an outcome one would not have bet on. The Hungarian team which featured Albert, Bene, Farkas, and Matrai was defeated by the USSR's Yachine, Voronin, and Chislenko, in Sunderland, before the smallest crowd of the quarterfinals, 26,000.

Meanwhile, in London, in front of 90,000, the German referee, Rudolf Kreitlein, was helping England win against Argentina. Stiles was allowed to give Rattin, the captain of the Argentina team, a hard time. Rattin protested and was sent off, but the referee did not know what the player had said, since he did not understand Spanish. Rattin's request for an interpreter was denied. From that moment on, amateur dramatics took over from professional soccer, and altercations between the Argentine players and the referee, caused by the language problem on the field, resulted in enormous bookings. It was an international scandal.

Argentina decided to play defensively and hope for a draw, as the departure of Rattin left the team with only 10 players. The English attacked only sporadically, until Hurst, 13 minutes before the end, after overcoming Antonio Roma gave England its victory, with superb header. The English coach, Alf Ramsey, would later call the Argentineans "animals," a statement which had extremely bad international repercussions, especially in Argentina. FIFA reprimanded Rattin, Ferrero, and the Argentine Football Association, but the referee suffered no consequences.

In the other Europe-South America clash in the quarterfinals, it seemed that the English referee Finney had chosen to send Germany to the semifinals, and Uruguay back to Montevideo. The first half was controlled by Uruguayans. There were good shots and good opportunities. Pedro Rocha mad a header, the goalie was hit, and Schnellinger touched on the goal line, sending it out of bounds. Finney did not call what many in the stadium felt was a hand ball. The Uruguayans were incensed. Germany's confidence grew and they scored to take a 1-0 lead. After halftime, the Uruguayans became more angry and frustrated and had Troche and Hector Silva sent off for retaliating. With only nine men on the field, the Germans had an easy time scoring 3 goals to go on to the semis, 4-0 victors.

Portugal had to travel to London for the semifinals to meet the English who never left Wembley throughout the finals - a distinct advantage. The best game in the Cup, 94,000 people saw England win 2-1, with both goals being scored by the superb Bobby Charlton. Portugal had been intimidated by the atmosphere. They were not the same team that had so brilliantly eliminated Hungary and Brazil. They did not believe they could win at Wembley.

In the other semifinaks, Germany and the USSR played as if they were at war. The Italian, Lo Bello, did his best to control the game, but he was not strong enough to do so. The Soviets had one player hurt and another sent off. The Germans were again very physical, as they had been in the game against Uruguay, and the Soviets paid them back in kind. It was a game that did justice to the title of "World Cup of Fouls." The only thing of merit was Yachine's excellent play. Germany won 2-1, and, as in 1954, would again play in the final, but this time against England.

FINALS
The finals at Wembley, before 95,000 spectators, with the Swiss, Gottfried Dienst, officiating, is still talked about today, Some say extra time at the end of the usual 90 minutes came as a result of a free kick, from which they tied the game, that shouldn't have been awarded to the Germans. Others protested that the third English goal, scored in overtime, should not have been allowed because the ball did not go in ... and that the fourth one should have been disallowed because small boys had invaded the field to celebrate. The Final score was 4-2

Whatever the arguments, the English had deserved to win, even during normal time, since the Germans had not played as well. Those who still critcize 1966 say that the English were favored since they never left Wembley, and that English referees officiated all the games of England's most difficult opponents. But for England, victory in their first and only World Cup final was sweet. Now the Intercontinental World Cup rivalry stood tied at 4 for Europe and 4 for South America.

England adds its name to the list of winners, but not everyone is convinced
Brazil, without a team, a failure.
Portugal, a novelty.
Korea, a surprise.
Fights and bad officiating.
Germany still laments at the finals.

The most controversial incident of the 1966 Cup: Rattin is kicked out during the England-Argentina game and doesn't play.

70 countries registered with FIFA for the 8th World Cup. On January 30, 1964, the groups for the qualifying matches were decided in Zurich, site of FIFA's former headquarters. Brazil, the 1962 winner, and England, the host country, have guaranteed berths, but there remain 14 places in the finals for the national teams from 5 continents to contend for.

Europe had 4 berths, South Africa 4, Central and North America, Africa, Asia, and Australia 1. The first problem arose when Africa withdrew, arguing that there should be a berth just for Africa. Most people agreed.

The greatest surprise in the European qualifying matches was Portugal's success, which meant that for the first time in their history they would compete in the finals. In their group was Chile, third in the 1962 finals, and Czechoslovakia, the runners-up in 1962. Later in England, the Portuguese would show that their qualification was not by chance.

The Portuguese played soccer well-that was for sure. They beat the Czechs 1-0 in Bratislava with a goal by their star Eusebio, and guaranteed their qualification in the return game in Oporto with a 0-0 tie.

There were no surprise in South America. Argentina and Uruguay classified with no problem. Chile filled the other berth. Mexico won its group. North Korea was the surprise in the Asian group. These, plus Spain, France, Italy, Germany, Hungary, and the USSR, Bulgaria, Switzerland, and of course Brazil, England, and Portugal, were 16 national teams who play in the World Cup.

On January 6, 1966, at the Royal Garden Hotel, in London, FIFA determined the following groups (1) Uruguay, France, England, Mexico in London and Wembley; (2) Argentina, Spain, W.Germany,Switzerland in Sheffield and Birmingham; (3) Brazil, Portugal, Hungary, Bulgaria in Liverpool and Manchester; (4) Chile, Italy, USSR, N.Korea in Sunderland and Middlesbrough.

The English insisted on choosing stadium with a capacity greater than 50,000 spectators, but using the existing facilities. They wanted this Cup to be the greatest success of all time. But it didn't quite turn out the way. Once again, Brazil was in what turned out to be the strongest in the Cup, group 3. Portugal would show their quick soccer and great goal scoring, the "Hungarian school" would reappear rejuvenated, and the Bulgarians would command respect with their energetic soccer. It seemed a cinch that England would be named a top seed, and Italy as well, but that wasn't the case, not quite. Korea gave the Cup its most surprising result, eliminating Italy. And England's first game was a scoreless and unconvincing tussle with Uruguay.

On July 11, 1966, the Cup opened at Wembley Stadium before the Queen of England and 100,000 spectators. England played Uruguay, but the game was disappointing 0-0 tie. Uruguay played entirely defensively and England was unimaginative offensively; the result was stalemate. A total letdown, This game was an example of the soccer to come. The English team was a booed and half the team went to the locker room without greeting the Queen.

Brazil's first was against Bulgaria, in Liverpool, on July 12, before 48,000 spectators and with a German officiating. The Bulgarians were incredibly violent, and this put a creative damper on the game. Brazil won with 2 goals from free kicks resulting from 2 of the many Bulgarian fouls. Pele scored the first, with what would turn out to be his last goal in the 1966 Cup, Garrincha scoring second. On the next day, in the same stadium, Portugal started to show its strenght, winning against Hungary, 3-1. On July 15, Hungary bounced back, playing against Brazil and winning 3-1 before 57,000 spectators at Everton's stadium in Liverpool. It was Brazil's first defeat in World Cup since 1954. True, Pele did not play, being spared for a later game, but Hungary just played better on the day. Portugal had an easy 3-0 win over Bulgaria, and on July 19, befoer a crowd of 62,000 spectators, they also beat Brazil easily 3-1, eliminating the 2 time winners. This time Pele played, but the Portuguese visctory was fair and just. It was a poor performance for Brazilian soccer, even with such players as Gerson, Tostao, Jairzinho, and Pele, who, 4 years later, would be the great stars of winning Brazilian team in Mexico.

There had been a great deal of confusion before the finals, and Brazil had not been able to decide on a team. The kind of organization and planning that had worked in 1958 and 1962 was not put to use.

England won 2-0 against both France and Mexico, with the tie in their fist game against Uruguay, then went on to the next round. Uruguay tied with Mexico, won agains France, and ended up in 2nd place. In groud 2 Germany and Argentina qualified, and Spain and Switzerland were eliminated. In group 3, both Portugal and hungary went on to the next round. In group 4, N.Korea was the surprise. They tied 1-1 with Chile, won against Italy 1-0, and lost to the USSR 3-0. N.Korea qualified in second place behind the USSR. Italy and Chile said good-bye to the Cup.

DRIBBLING AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE 1ST ATTACKER-PART2

Since dribbling is largely a question of personal style, the ball itself is the number one teacher of the player. You can accelerate learning by offering your player a great deal 1v1 activities. Here is a basic one which has proven successful for all levels, from beginner to highest levels.

Use grid about 10yards square, 3 balls, and 4 players(2 per team). 2 Players go 1v1 in the grid, trying to score by shooting between the feet of the player standing still in the middle of the opposite goal line with spread 1yard apart.

The goal-line players each keep a ball in their hands, so that when the field ball is played over the end line or scored, the goal-line player can immediately toss or roll the ball in to his teammate for a quick counter-attack. Goal-line player retrieve the out-of-bounds ball. If the goal-line player is retrieving the ball, his opponent in the grid cannot shoot, but must shield or dribble till the "Goal" returns.

The coach should allow them to play for a minute or two, then call for a quick switch; the "Goal" become the field players for the next minute or two. Demands immediate transitions; perhaps use extra players on the side lines to keep the ball in play; require specific moves.

Your players will get a great workout as they develop dribbling and shielding skills. Many coaches use some form of this game every practice, gradually adding players to develop a tactical progression from this 1v1 to 2v1, 3v1, 4v2, and 5v2.

The 1v1 exercise will reinforce the need for shielding. Players will find that when marked tightly and unable to go forward, they must place their bodies between the ball and the opponent, jockeying for position while maintaining possession and looking for an opening. (The concept can be demonstrated by a quick comparison: pick up the ball and dribble it like a basketball; as soon as a defender gets within range, notice how you keep your body between the ball and the opponent.) Coaching points to emphasize are that body intervenes from a side-on position (adding width to the shield) while balance and vision are maintained. The player must keep cool under pressure, and shielding is working under pressure!

Shielding requires constant movement as you adjust to the defender's position. Playing 1v1 against a superior defender will reinforce this skill, as will 1v1 in a very confined area. To make a game of it, score by counting the seconds of successful shielding. Or add the the option of dropping the ball back to your goal-line player after shielding for ten or more seconds.

As much as possible, these activities should involve finishing on goal, because scoring is a skill which requires continuous development and practice. You can progress from the human goal to the flat-faced goal () which are very well-suited to many repetitions in s short time. This greatly facilities economy of training (as well as space, since both sides of the goal can be used safely). Thus you can incorporate the 1v1 with shooting practice.

PASSING AND RECEIVING AND DEVELOPEMENT OF 1ST & 2ND ATTACKER

In a very concrete way, dribbling skill is essential to good passing and receiving. Dribbling is a series of micro-passes and collections; without this skill, the player is unable to hold the ball, and is forced to pass it at the wrong time or lose it. Furthermore, the feints used in dribbling can be used to disguise passing intentions.

So by developing the individual art of dribbling, the coach is naturally preparing his players for the team art of passing.

Since soccer is a team game, the single most important element in team success is probably the level of passing and receiving. Technically, successful passing requires skillful collection, disguise, proper pace, and accuracy; tactically, it depends on more deception, quality support, creation of space, communication and variety.

In youth coaching, our technical training should concentrate on the basic types of passes and receptions, while our tactical training should teach the concept of support an basic small group tactics. Good training integrates both technique and tactics!

The inside-of-the-foot, in passing and receiving, is basic to success in soccer, and is used more than any other technique. Train your players to master it with either foot. At the fundamental stage, stress the standing foot pointing to the target, the knee bent, the toes raised, the foot striking the ball just above the midpoint and the follow-through.

The key to proper weight (pace or speed) of the pass lies in the follow-through, the result of a long stroke. Poor passes are often the result of short, choppy, strokes, with no follow-through. The shorter the stroke the smaller the "sweet spot". The sharper timing that this requires is best left to highly skilled players operating at higher speeds. At earlier stages in their lives, they used the longer strokes. With youth, emphasize the follow-through.

At the match -related stage, first add movement, then add token defensive pressure; perhaps a 2v1 in a grid, with the defender playing with at 50% effort. Encourage the use of the weaker foot. Notice how the players use their eye; they should look up before passing or receiving the ball, and look at the ball while passing or receiving. This is important, as it leads to vision and communication.

Players can then see the runs made by their teammates as well as their opponents. Hands signals, such as pointing where you want the ball, can also be effective.

When players are ready for the match condition stage, increased speed and defensive pressure. If you want to keep the 2v1 format, make game of it by scoring a point for every 5-10 consecutive passes; keep rotating players between offense and defense every minute or two.

This approach, used to emphasize technique, can be further developed into a 2v2 in a 10x20 yard grid; add small goals and score by passing with the inside-of-the-foot through these goals. Building upon format, you can add player to increase the grid until you have a small-sided game of 5v5 or 6v6. Impose specific demands, especially 2 touch only, or weak foot only, to develop technique. If player cannot maintain possession, add 1 or 2 extra players to 1 team, or use neutral players who always help the attack.

Since you should try to incorporate shooting into every practice, you may want to add goals (full-size or flat-faced) with or without goalies. This approach can be taken with any aspect of passing and receiving. Remember to impose specific demands only for a short time; then allow play without restriction. Encourage movement immediately after passing.

A tried-and-true method for combining technical and tactical work in passing and receiving involves the 1v1 exercise introduced in the previous chapter. After allowing players to take turns going 1on1 in a grid, give them option of passing back to their goalies, who must return a one-touch pass.

This gives them a limited 2v1, as they can only pass backwards. But it will encourage communication and decision-making. The next step is to add a support player on each side; these players are restricted to their respective touch lines and to one-touch passes. They support either attacker. Now the give-and-go is a real option. As before, they play all-out for a minute or two, then 1 quickly switch positions.

In the quarterfinals, in Viña de Mar, Brazil played against England on June 10, and won 3-1 with Garrincha in control of the play. In Santiago, Yugoslavia eliminated Germany, 1-0. Quite annoyed, the Chilean traveled to Arica, having to leave the comfortable National Stadium to play against USSR; Chile won, Chileans across the country danced with joy and started to believe that title might be theirs. In Rancagua, Czechoslovakia eliminated Hungary 1-0. The semifinals were held on June 13, in Viña del Mar, where the Czechs played the Yugoslavia and won 3-1, putting them in finals.

Brazil traveled to Santiago by train to play Chile, but got off the train two stations earlier, arrived at the stadium by bus, thereby avoiding the crowd and misleading everyone. In spite of the poor performance of the Peruvian, Yamasaki, who officiated the game, Brazil played a great game with Garrincha dominating and won 4-2 before crowd of 77,000 spectators who applauded the best of Brazilian football. Garrincha made two goals, and Vava two others. The game was watched by the greatest number of spectators of the Cup.

Garrincha and Leonel Sanchez were both sent off, but since Garrincha had no previous disciplinary offense in the Cup, the judges allowed him to play against the Czechs in the final. The Chileans, who said that they had eaten spaghetti in order to win against the Italians 2-0, and Swiss cheese to beat the Swiss, and had drunken Vodka to beat the Soviets, had also had coffee in order to win against the Brazilians, but the coffee, it seems, did not agree with them.

The Final, held on June 17, 1962 before 77,000 spectators, with the Soviet Latychev officiating, was particular. Brazil, with the 8 players who had been in Stockholm, went behind to a Czech goals on the 15-min mark. Amarildo responded for Brazil after 17minutes. This was the score at the end of first half. The Chileans were cheering for both teams. 25-minutes into the second half, a great play was made by Amarildo, who crossed a high ball in from the left side that was just perfect for a header by Zito, making it 2-1. 9-minutes later, at the 34-minutes, Djalma Santos took the ball into the area, and Schroif, the excellent Czech goalie, tripped, blinded by the sun, and let the ball lie at Vava's feet, 3-1. The game was over. It had been a beautiful, honest, and well-played match with some great Czech skills also on display from Masopust, Pluskal, Popluhur, Pospichal, Kadraba, and others.

From Brazil there was marvelous play by Gilmar, guarding the goal, and Djalma, Santos, Mauro, Nilton, Zito, Amarildo, Vava, Zagalo, Zozima, and Garrincha, The bow-legged player who was the "king of the 1962 Cup," scoring 4 goals, the most goals in the competitions. When Pele left the field because of his injury against Czechoslovakia, never to play again in this World Cup, Garrincha stepped up to shoulder even greater responsibility. He played the final with a fever of almost 104, but maintained his strength and enthusiasm.

Amarildo too, at 23, was a remarkable substitute for pele. Mauro Ramos de Oliveira, captain of the team, received the "Jules Rimet" Cup from Stanley Rous, president of FIFA. It was a great personal victory.

The standings in the World Cup now showed Europe had 3titles, 2 for Italy and 1 for Germany, and that South America had 4, 2 for Brazil and 2 for Uruguay.

The 1962 Cup had been a success with the public. At least 896,363 people had watched the games. The record was the Brazil-Chile game, with 72,896 spectators and receipts of $309,132. The Brazil-Czechoslovakia game, in the finals was second, with 71,020 tickets sold and receipts of $286,444. The Chile-Yugoslavia game to decide third place in the World Cup, which Chile won 1-0, was attended by 70,012 and had receipts of $278,380.

Technically, this Cup was not a great success since the goal average per game was very low and the soccer had often been played in a violent and sometimes unsportsmanlike manner.

BRAZIL REPEAT ITS FEAT;
BECOMES A TWO-TIME CUP WINNER, IN SPITE OF PROBLEMS

On June 10, 1956, at the FIFA Congress in Lisbon, it was decided that Chile would host the Seventh World Cup - a surprise, the result of the efforts of Carlos Dittiborn, born in Rio de Janeiro, but of Chilean decent, who had always lived in Chile. His goals was to prove that Chile had what it takes to host the World Cup, and he succeeded. Unfortunately, on April 28, 1962, one month before the opening of the Cup, Carlos Dittiborn died. As a tribute, the Chileans did everything in their power to make it a great Cup. Dittiborn's phrase, "Because we have nothing, we will do our utmost..," was heard in every stadium.

Fifty-six countries signed up for the Cup, which was a new record, proof of FIFA's progress and of the growing interest in soccer.

The Cup was held from May 30 to June 17, 1962. It was cold in Chile, but the weather was good for soccer. Brazil, the prior winner, and Chile, the host, automatically qualified. The groups for the qualifying matches to fill the 14 berths in finals were as follows:

Europe, 10 groups with 27 national teams; Africa, 2 groups with 4 national teams; Asia 1 group with 2 national teams; South America, 3 groups with 6 national teams; and the Far East and Africa, 1 group with 3 national teams.

After qualifying matches it was clearly that the Cup was again to be a battle between South America, represented by Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Uruguay, and Columbia, and Europe, including Germany, Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, England, Hungary, Bulgaria, and the USSR.

On January 18, 1962, in Santiago, the groups were drawn, following the format used in Sweden. Group1 would be playing in Arica, Group2 in Santiago, Group3 in Viña del Mar, and Group4 in Rancagua. In Santiago the games would be in the modern and comfortable National Stadium with a seating capacity of 75,000. In Arica, a new stadium was being built with a god field and in good condition. In Viña, the city would refurbish the Sausalito stadium. In Rancagua, the American firm, Anaconda, was to finance the construction of stadium for 25,000 spectators. All Chile was hard at work, so that nothing would be lacking.

The Cup's soccer was violent, excessively so, and at one point, after the first games, the disciplinary committee called and emergency meeting of all the referees, hoping to improve matters. Some of the games were truly "open combat."

On May 30, in Viña del Mar, Brazil played Mexico, with the Swiss referee Dienst officiating. Brazil won 2-0, with Pele and Zagalo scoring their only 1962 World Cup goals. The team had 9 of the players from the 1958 Cup finals. Mauro stood in for Bellini, and Zozimo replaced Orlando. both in defense. The coach was Aymore Moreira in place of a sick Feola. In the same stadium in vakia and the unexpected happened - Pele was hurt. He continued to play since the substitution was not yet allowed, but his injury was a real setback for Brazil. Brazil tied with the excellent Czechs, 0-0. Spain beat Mexico on May 3. Brazil finished the first round on may 6, playing against Spain before 19,000 spectators. Adelardo scored for Spain, putting them up 1-0 at the 35 minute mark. Brazil was extremely nervous, but was able to wake up at the last minute with Amarildo, playing for Pele, scoring two life-saving goals with the help of Garrincha in the 27th and 41st minutes. Brazil was in the next round, but barely.

In the other groups, the USSR and Yugoslavia eliminated Colombia and Uruguay. The most sensational game was the Soviets tying with the Colombians 4-4. In group 2, there were some true battles, Chile and Italy and Germany vs Italy; Germany placed first and Chile second. They both went on to the next round on its goal count.

No one involved with the World Cup will ever forget the period between June 8 and 29, 1958. Fifth-three countries registered with FIFA for the Cup and all the continents would be represented. Only Cyprus, Turkey, and Venezuela abstained. It was to be the greatest "Jules Rimet" Cup ever. For the First time, the USSR would take part. Unfortunately, Jules Rimet, the Father of the Cup, who had died on October 16, 1956, in Paris, at age of 83, would not see this great event that he had inspired.

Sweden was chosen for the same reason that FIFA had chosen Switzerland: neutrality. The "Jules Rimet" Sixth World Cup would take place in 12 cities with new or rebuilt stadiums.

FIFA decided the format, which would be used until 1974, would be 4 groups, each with 4 national teams, from which two would move forward, but everyone would play against each other. In the next round, after a simple playoff, the winners would go on to the semifinals. Germany, the defending champions, and Sweden, the host, registered and waited to see who the other 14 qualifying national teams would be.

In South America, Brazil qualified after tying with Peru in Lima. Paraguay eliminated Uruguay, with stupendous 5-0 win, in Ascuncion. Argentina filled the berth in a group that included Chile and Bolivia.

Belgium, Bulgaria, Holland, Switzerland, Spain, and Italy lost in the qualifying matches in Europe. England had an easy classification, but later Manchester United suffered a devastating plane crash in Munich, and the national team had to reorganize itself.

Hungary qualified, but very little was left of the 1954 tea-no more Puskas, Czibor, or Kocsis. Czechoslovakia brought some new faces to substitute for their legendary Planicka, Medjely, and Koda - these future stars being Masopust, Kvaniask, Pospichal, and Novak. The Austrians qualified with an aging team. The Soviets brought some new players to the qualifying matches, such as Yachine, Igor Netto, Salnikov, and Ivanov. Yugoslavia also qualified and added some wonderful new players to their stars from previous Cups.

From the Americas there were Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Mexico; from Britain, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales; from Europe, Hungary, the USSR, and Yugoslavia; and from Western Europe, Germany, Austria, France, and Sweden. The groups were: (1)Germany, Czechoslovakia, N. Ireland, and Argentina; (2)France, Paraguay, Yugoslavia, and Scotland; (3)Sweden, Hungary, Wales, and Mexico; (4)Brazil, England, the USSR, and Austria.

The Cup began on June 8. The Brazilians against Austria in the small town of Udevalla, in front of a crowd of 21,000. Brazil won 3-0. Mazola made a goal in each half and Nilton Santos made the other. It was clean soccer, well played, and without violence. England and the USSR tied, 2-2, which was an excellent result for Brazil because it meant that they were already in the lead in the competitive fourth Pool. France beat Paraguay 7-3, with Paraguay almost winning in the second half, 3-2 before Fontaine scored three goals. Other results from the first round were pretty much as expected - Sweden beat Mexico, and Germany won against Argentina.

In the second game, Brazil played against England in Goteborg. The game was difficult, even though Brazil looked to be in control, the final score was 0-0. The USSR won against Austria 2-0. Brazil's third game was also Goteborg against the USSR on June 15. On the Brazilian team, Zito replaced Dino, Garrincha played for Joel, and Pele, playing for the first time in a World Cup, replaced Mazola. It was a spectacular display with Garrincha putting on a real show, and Brazil won 2-0. Everyone was impressed with Brazil's skillful and efficient soccer. Brazil topped the 4th Pool. Meant that the USSR and England had to play an extra game. The Soviet won 1-0, eliminating England. Sweden and Wales won the third Pool.

Brazil, with Mazola replacing Vava, next faced Wales, on June 19, in Goteborg. Pele scored the winning goal, his first goal in World Cup, breaching the feared Welsh defense. In the semifinals Brazil would be joined by Swededn who beat USSR in Stockholm; France, who defeated N. Ireland 4-0 with the best offensive display, and Germany, with a victory over Yugoslavia.

The semifinals pitted France, with the best offense, against Brazil, the best defense, in what was to be the most outstanding game of the 1958 Cuo. Brazil played the game perfectly: a strong defense, despite tow goals scored against them and a superb offense, scoring five goals. The French opened the scoring through Fontaine, but Vava equalized to make it 1-1 Brazil's Didi scored to make it 2-1, shooting from a distance of 25 meters. France lost Jonquet, who was hurt playing against Vava. In the World Cup, Substitutes were still not allowed, and the French played with 10 players for the rest of the game.

In the second half the world got a better look at the 17-years-old Pele. Like a magician, he hypnotized the French defense and made 3 beautiful goals, which made the scores 5-1 and took Brazil to the final. The French player, Piantoni, scored a second goal for France. It was memorable game in Stockhol, on June 24, 1958.

For the first time since 1950, Brazil was in the final where they would meet Sweden, who had beaten Germany, 3-1, in another historic game. No doubt thw Swedes remembered the 7-1 socre at Marcana in 1950, but Brazil was organized now, something they had not been in 1930, 1934, 1938, 1950, or 1954, and they had and intelligent and capable coach in Vicente Italo Feola, who had introduced the 4-4-2 and 4-3-3 play to the world of soccer.

THE FINALS

On June 29, in Stockholm, before a crowd of 49,737, with the Frenchman Maurice Guigue officiating, and with two kings, King Adolf Gustav in the stadium and Pele playing in the field, Brazil displayed the magic soccer of Garrincha, Pele, Djalma Santos, Gilmar, Nilton Santos, Bellini, Orlando(the captain), Zito, Didi, Vava, and Zagalo.

At the beginning Leidholm thrilled the public when he scored to make it 1-0 for Sweden. Didi calmly controlled the center field and his teammates felt his calmness and assurance. Garrincha, on the right wing, twice pierced the Swedish defense and crossed to Vava to make two identical and devastating goals. Brazil was ahead. and the first half ended 2-1.

In the second half, Pele scored, followed by Zagalo: 4-1. Simonsson reduced the goal deficit to Sweden but Pele, with a header in the final minute, reemphasized Brazil superiority. The Brazilian in Stockholm, thousand of miles across the Atlantic Ocean in a country bursting with pride and joy, celebrated a title they had all wanted to win since 1930. Brazil was the World Cup winner, the first to be in victorious on another continent. It was the beginning of a great era for Brazilian soccer.

Sweden was the runner-up, and France scored 6 against Germany to take third place. The French had the best offense in the championship and Fontaine, their striker, scored the most goals overall, 13. A total of 126 goals were scored in the 35 games that were played.

The World Cup 1958 was a great tournament.

FIFA WORLD CUP 1954

Switzerland was not greatly affected by the war. Its economy was intact, and the Swiss had a good stadiums that could be enlarged. It had played 2 good games in the Cup, once in 1938 against Germany, and in 1950 against Brazil.

It had all the necessary credential to be chosen by FIFA to hold the Fifth World Cup.

There were 37 contries participating. FIFA accepted Paraguay's late registration, but the late registration from Inda, Peru, Vietnam, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Cuba, and Iceland were not accepted. There were 38 countries which would play in qualifying matches. Argentina did not participate again, the USSR also unknown.

Egypt, Japan, Korea, and China would be a newcomers this time.

The organizing committee was presided by the president, Thommen(Switzerland), and consisted of Bergerus(Sweden), Rous(England), Delaunay(France), Barassi and Mauro(Italy), Lotsy(Holland), Villizio(Uruguay), and Wiederkehr and Gasmann(Switzerland). They decided the following groups (1)Germany, Saar, Norway, 1 qualifier; (2)Belgium, Sweden, Finland, 1 qualifier; (3)England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, 2 qualifier; (4)France, Northern Ireland, Luxembourg, 1 qualifier; (5)Austria, Portugal, 1 qualifier; (6)Spain, Turkey, 1 qualifier; (7)Hungary, Poland,1 qualifier; (8)Czechoslovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, 1 qualifier; (9)Italy, Egypt, 1 qualifier; (10)Yugoslavia, Israel, Greece, 1 qualifier; (11)Mexico, Haiti, United States, 1 qualifier; (12)Brazil, Paraguay, Chile, 1 qualifier; (13)Korea, Japan, China, 1 qualifier.

The distribution of the qualifying matches was criticized on the grounds that the strong team would not reach the finals, whereas the weaker ones would. In spite of this criticism, the qualifying matches for World Cup took place from May, 1953 to April, 1954

Spain was eliminated by Turkey, and Sweden by Belgium. The Spaniards and the Swedes had made it to the finals of 1950. Spain's elimination was pathetic. It had scored a victory in Madrid, 4-1, a defeat in Istanbul, 1-0, and a tie in Rome, 2-2. It did not play Stockholm and in Brussels. Switzerland and Uruguay, started to emerge. They were Turkey, Belgium, and Germany(after difficult games against Saar and Norway), England and Scotland, France and Austria(Scored 9 goals against Portugal in Vietnam), Hungary(Poland forfeited), Czechoslovakia, Italy, Yugoslavia, Mexico, Brazil and South Korea. There were 12 national teams from Europe, 3 from the Americas, and 1 Asia.

The 1950 World Cup has been criticized because organizing committee decided to choose two top seeds in each group for the first Pool round. The top seeds in the following round, the Quarterfinals, there was be a simple playoff. This qualifying system was never used again, just as the method used in Brazil in 1950, criticized by the Europeans, was also abandoned.

Under this system, Brazil, Uruguay, Hungary, England, Italy, Austria, France and Turkey were the top seeds. This meant that in Group 1 with Brazil, France, Mexico, and Yugoslavia, Brazil and France would not play each other, and in Group 2 with Hungary, South Korea, Turkey, and Germany, Hungary and Turkey would not play each. Hence, there would be only 4 games per group - a crazy system. 3 of the top seeds got no further than this first round; they were France, Italy, and Turkey.

Another drawback of this system was that 26 games had to be played in 19 days. Even with this additional challenge, the Hungarians were the runaway favorites. They had been the Olympic Winners at the 1952 games in Helsinki and had played the last 28 international matches without suffering a single defeat. And then there was the thrilling game against the English at Wembley, on November 25, 1953, which had ended 6-3. The stars Hungarians were Puskas, Czibor, Hidegutti, Boszis, Kocsis, and many more. They eliminated Brazil in a Difficult game on June 27, in Bern, 4-2.

They played against Uruguay in Lausanne, 2-2 and after the overtime, 4-2. And in the Final, they were winning against Germany 2-0, but the Germans, who wouldn't give up, eventually won 3-2. It was the most surprising final score, considering that during the first Pool round, the Hungarians had beaten the Germans 8-3. So for Hungary, just as for Brazil in 1950, the dream would remain a dream. Although the German coach Sepp Herberger had changed teams to save his best players for the final, as allowed by rule, even today no one can explain what happened. The Hungarians had ten minutes of fantastic play, taking 2-0 lead. The Germans were undaunted and continued to give it their all, tying game 2-2 by the end of the 1st half. In the 2nd half with only six minutes left, Rahn, the German center forward, scored a goal which became "the surprise of the century," and without Hitler!

The 1954 World Cup was a tournament of goal, racking up an amazing 140, averaging 5.36 per game. The Hungarian Kocsis was its top scorer with 11 goals. 943,000 people watched the games, averaging 37,200 per match. One of the games still holds the record today for the most goals scored in the World Cup, Austria 7 vs Switzerland 5!

Jules Rimet, now at the end of his career, made a point of coming down from his box to give the trophy to Fritz Walter, the German captain. And, as in 1950, one wonders if the president of FIFA would have preferred to be giving it to the losing team/s captain, Ferenk Puskas. Soccer, soccer, the things that happen.

It is important to remember that 2 years after World Cup, the Hungarian revolution broke out and all the great players left their country. Puskas went to play for Real Madrid, Kocsis and Czibor went to Barcelona, and Hidegkuti to Germany, where each continued with his brilliant career.

It should be mentioned that, after the World Cup, and for no known reason, many of the German players went into rest homes, claiming physical problems. It has been widely speculated that drugs may have been the cause. Nothing has ever been proven, but...

FIFA WORLD CUP 1950

Between the Cup in 1938 and the Cup in 1950, there had been a World War. FIFA was headquartered in Paris and Jules Rimet knew that Adolf Hitler had still not forgotten the humiliation of the German team during the previous two World Cups. He also knew that Hitler wanted FIFA in Berlin. What did Rimet do? Both he and FIFA moved to Switzerland, where FIFA is today.

For obvious reasons, not a single European country wanted to host the Fourth Cup. Brazil was the only candidate and therefore they became the host. At the 1948 FIFA Congress in London, Brazil presented a different concept of the Cup, there would be four groups, each group with four national teams; in second round, everyone would play everyone else and a point score would be kept.

Thirty-three countries signed up for the qualifying matches. Brazil built the largest stadium in the world, Marcana. There, on July 16,1950, 200,000 spectators would be crying with joy.

One more important detail to mention. The Belgian Seeldrayers, together with vice president of FIFA, suggested that the World Cup trophy be called the "Jules Rimet Cup", as a tribute to the man who had fought for soccer, for the World Cup, for the growth of FIFA, and for the competitive spirit. At this congress, the British Federation rejoined the FIFA. The USSR also became a member.

It was not easy to organize the 1950 Cup. The Argentinians claimed to be having problems with Brazilian soccer authorities, and they quit. Then there were Austria, Scotland, and Belgium. This traditional soccer powers would, without a doubt, be missed, as would Peru, Burma, India, Ecuador, the Philippines, and Turkey.

The reason for the absence of Scotland was also somewhat absurd. The Scottish team placed second in the British qualifying matches and the directors thought it would not be worth while going to Rio, even though two teams were supposed to qualify from their group. The English, going to what would be their first World Cup, came out on top in the group, and were considered better, or so the Scots thought. The countries behind then formidable Iron Curtain-Bulgarian, Hungary, Poland, Romania, and Czechoslovakia-also absented themselves.

In organizing the qualifying matches, the organizers kept the geographic location of the countries in mind to avoid unnecessary travel.

Group1: England,Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. 2 countries qualify, Scotland declined to take part.
Group2 : Yugoslavia, France, and Israel. 1 country qualified, Yugoslavia.
Group3 : Belgium, Luxembourg, and Switzerland. The Swiss qualified.
Group4 : Ireland, Finland, and Sweden. The Swedes came.
Group5 : Spain and Portugal. The Spaniards qualified.
Group6 : Austria, Syria, and Turkey. No country would take part in the Finals.
Group7 : Cuba, United States, and Mexico. The last two qualified.
Group8 : Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, and Uruguay. Paraguay and Uruguay. qualified.
Group9 : Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile. Bolivia and Chile qualified.
Group10: Burma, India, and the Philippines. No one participated.

The European decided to make another attempt at completing the groups for the finals, and Portugal and France were selected, but Portugal yielded to France. France agreed to join what was to be group 4, together with Uruguay and Bolivia. France would play against Uruguay in Porto Alegre, Brazil , on June 25.

There were 13 national teams for the 1950 Cup in Brazil, 6 from Europe and 7 From the Americas, and they had been grouped.

The good news was that Italy , a 2 time Cup winner, Uruguay, the 1930 Cup winner, and England, inventors of the game, would be playing for the first time.

Brazil began well. The game against Mexico was easy, 4-0. Uruguay, beating Bolivia, 8-0. The Italians were surprised by Swedes in Sao Paulo's Stadium and lost, 3-2. In that same stadium Brazil also had some excitement tying with Switzerland, 2-2. Yugoslavia, after beating Switzerland 3-0 and Mexico 4-1, started to worry the Brazilians. All Yugoslavia needed in their next match against Brazil was a tie, Rio de Janeiro celebrated on July 1, 1950 when Brazil scored a goal before 150,000 spectators, at the time the greatest attendance ever for a soccer game. Marcana went wild. Ademir and Zizinho scored the goals and Brazil went on to the next round.

The Cup had some memorable moments. The most spectacular one was the defeat of England by the United States in Bleo Horizonte on June 29, 1950, in a game that will never be forgotten. The English had won against Chile. No one could believe iot when Larry Gaetjens scored the goal for the United States. The American team had an Italian goalie, Borghi, and 2 Portuguese on the offense, the Sousa brothers, as well as Belgian center, Maca. Alf Remsey, the English coach for the 1966 Cup, was there to witness the astounding upset that will remain forever in the annals of the World Cup. Another surprise was the elimination of Italy, who played in Sao Paulo, cheered ont by large Italian-Brazilian colony there. But it must be remembered the Turin air disaster in 1949 killed 8 Italian national team, creating insurmontable problems for the 2-time winners. Sweden played a great game against Italy on June 25 at Pacaembu to put the Scandinavians into the next Final Pool round.

THE FINAL ROUND

The Final Pool games began on July9. Brazil and Spain had already played 3 games, Sweden 2, and Uruguay only 1, against Bolivia. The opening games were Brazil against Sweden and Spaoin against Uruguay, at Marcana and Pacaembu stadiums. Brazil won 7-1, with 4 goals by Ademir. They play was a joy to behold, like choreographed dance, with Zizinho, Danilo, Jair, and Ademir running the show. The Uruguay-Spanish match, a poor one, ended in a tie, 2-2. Brazil chances were improving.

2nd Round

2nd Final Pool games Brazil, beating spain 6-1 at Marcana. After a dull 1st half, with the score 2-1, Uruguay came out 3-2 winning against Sweden in their second game. Every Brazilian was sure that Brazil would be the next World Cup winner.

FINALS

Brazil only needed a tie on July 16 in their final game against Uruguay to win the Fourth World Cup. Before crowd 200,000 the included Jules Rimet, Brazil scored to make it 1-0 thirteen minutes into the 1st half. Then the Italian-Uruguayan Schiaffino tied. The stadium became silent. It became silent even more when Gigghia scored another goal for Uruguay. Brazil, their stamina waning because they had celebrated their victory long into the night before, was unable to come back, and lost chance of becoming the World Cup winners for the first time. Saddened by what was a national tragedy for brazil, no one noticed Uruguay's Abdulio, Varela, Maspoli, Schiaffino, Gigghia, Miguez, Gambetta, and the others celebrating. There would be revenge, but much later.

The Cup was a financial success, having broken all spectators and tickets records. A total of 384,000,000 Swiss francs were collected. FIFA kept 125million, and after paying the expenses of the 13 participants, a good sum was still left over for the Brazilian soccer authorities.

Finally, the World Cup, interrupted by the World War, was back. Now, four Cups, there were two tittles for Europe, won by Italy, and two for South America, won by Uruguay.

FINAL GAME AND DISASTER AT MARCANA

Everybody knows the end. It was a great tragedy, which culminated with Brazil losing the title, which it took for granted beforehand and had erroneously celebrated.

DRIBBLING AND DEVELOPMENT OF THE 1ST ATTACKER

The youth coach should focus on player development which is greatly dependent upon the ability to dribble the ball. Of course, there is a place for 1-touch soccer; but there is a greater need for players developing confidence with the ball prior to 1-touch. In order not to kick the ball away mindlessly when there is no available pass, A1 must be must be able to dribble and shield. Every player become the A1 as soon as he/she receive the ball, very player, even the goalie, needs to develop dribbling skill. Exciting dribbling,such as a series of 1v1's, is a highlights of the game.

The way to develop good dribblers varies greatly from being 1 or 2 moves; teaching dribbling involves training players to perform many moves; then, and only then, can they choose the few that work best for them.

DRIBBLING

Dribbling is the most individual, creative, and expressive skill in soccer. There may be no "wrong" way to dribble, but there are general characteristics of good dribbling. These include keeping the ball under close control, even to the point where the ball is sometimes under the player; touching the ball with almost step taken; using boot feet, and also various surfaces of each foot, including the inside, outside, sole, rear and instep; going either direction with particular move; keeping the head up enough to see both the ball and the field, changing direction sharply, quickly, and frequently, if necessary; changing speed, with stop, slow deliberate movements, rapid acceleration from dribble to drive, and rapid deceleration from drive to dribble; and finally, using a variety of well-executed feints.

Dribbling development helps players build confidence and poise. The physical requirements are flexibility, fast footwork and thousands of touches on the ball in practice and game conditions. Flexibility from player-player, can maximized through proper stretching and practice with the ball. Flexibility allows players to get very low and explode away with speed using power move. The power moves begins with a low crouch over the ball, with the player gradually rising to an upright position as speed is attained.

Fast footwork is developed when good technique is combined with rapid and numerous repetition, which call for literally thousands of touches per practice session. This is not nearly as difficult as it may sound!

There are dozens of moves, which can be joined together in innumerable ways, thus creating dribbler's unique style. Many of this moves called (scissors, cap, pulling the V). Bear in mind that every player will not make use of every move; each player find two or three moves that work for him/her. As a coach, teach players to go both ways from given move, and to gain some "ambifootness" from exercises.

JUGGLING

Dribbling can be integral part of warm-up. Players, juggling a soccer ball (especially the smaller size) develops touch and is a good warm-up. Allowing the ball to bounces between juggles is another helpful step before full-scale juggling., and is especially helpful in loosening hips. The inside and outside of the foot can be used more easily when a bounce is employed. Competent jugglers should work from left to right and right to left, high to low and low to high body parts, then add movement and change of direction. Instead of stopping whenever the ball hits the ground, players should explode away and change direction with the ball the instant it touches the ground.

The next activity is dribbling in a confined area, which forces them to look up in order to avoid collisions. The basic tactic evolved here is to slow down in traffic., and speed up in open space. The coach can add specific demands- left foot only, outside of foot, change direction or speed on whistle, shielding whenever close to another player. The coach can evaluate his players during this time, so he knows what to emphasize in the instruction.

Teach them few moves, one or two in given session. do four or five of the moves previously learned. As in all technical instruction at the fundamental stage, it is best to start with clear and brief demonstration. Every player should have a ball for these sessions. Next practice the move with very slow moving ball and no defender, 100 repetitions.

Progressed to the game-related stage by working with a slightly faster moving ball, token pressure, and shielding whenever close to another player.

A highly successful method for combining many touches with developing specific moves is to dribble the ball back and forth between the insides of the feet three times (the ball goes back and forth, not forward) then immediately execute the move. Coaches should include at least ten minutes of dribbling practice per session.

Spend a few minutes at each of the following, and incorporate shielding wherever practical.

Each player with a ball, free arrangement in grid, center circle, or penalty box.

Each player with a ball, working around cones.

Each player with a ball, moving in circular fashion around the demonstrator.

Each player with a ball, in pairs facing each other, pretending to take each other on, but within 2 yards, using a move to dribble past each other.

Same format, but only 1 ball, each player taking a turn, and the other acting as semi-passive defender (in this activity go left or right).

Two line (no more than three players per line) facing each other ten yards apart. players in front toward each other, making a move, passing to player in line facing them, then going to end of opposite line.

Cones in triangle, up to three players, each with ball, making a move at each cone.

FIFA WORLD CUP 1938

In France, Italy becomes a two-time winner.

The fear of a World War.
Spain is absent due to Civil War.
Good soccer from Brazil and Leonidas.
The Hungarians are the runner-up, and Brazil is third.
Leonidas, the "black diamond", scores the greatest number of goals.

August 15, 1936, just after the Olympic games had ended, 40 of ht 54 members at the FIFA Congress at the Kroll Opera, in Berlin, decided to let France host the 3r World Cup. For Jules Rimet, president of FIFA and the French Soccer Federation, this was a great triumph.

Europe was in the brink of war. Spain was fighting a Civil War. Hitler marched his troops into Austria with no resistance. The Uruguayans insisted on staying at home. Argentinians, feeling rejected, would also not participate. Of the 35 countries who had initially registered, only 27 remained. For the first time, the host country and the winner of the Cup automatically qualified for a berth. This rules holds true today.

Qualifiers were the Dutch Indies, after the United State and Japan withdrew; Cuba, after withdrawal of Colombia, Costa Rica, Mexico, El Salvador, and Surinam; Brazil also because Bolivia abstained; Germany and Sweden after eliminating Estonia and Finland; Norway and Poland, after they defeat Ireland and Yugoslavia; Romania because of Egypt's no-show; Switzerland after defeating Portugal; Hungary eliminated Greece and Palestine; Austria eliminating Latvia, Austria did not play in the finals following a decision by the German government; and Belgium and Holland, eliminated Luxembourg.

Third World Cup was held June 4, 1938. On June 4 and 5, first Round was played. The Hungarians, in Rheims, trampled the Dutch Indies 6-0; in Colombes Stadium in Paris, the French easily defeated Belgians, 3-1. On June 4, 1938, Germany, playing against the Swiss at Parc des Princes. It was a normal game but tied; after 30 minutes overtime it was still tied. Germans were not able to win. Five days later, on June 9 playoff, still in Paris. First half, Germany were winning 2-0. But in the second half, the Swiss, with stamina, ran over their opponents, Scoring 4 goals knocking Germany out of the championship.

The Italians, in Marseilles, had a hard time winning against the Norwegians, 2-1. In Toulouse, Cuba was surprised to tie with the aged and tired Romanian team 3-2, playing overtime. 3 days later, Cuba eliminated Romania 2-1. In Le Havre, June 5, the dutch stunned Czechoslovakia by holding them 0-0. In overtime, Czechoslovakia eventually won 3-0. In Strasbourg, the Brazilians played their game against a strong Poland. Playing classic, agile, and quick soccer, Brazil was ahead 3-1 first half ended. During halftime, however, a downpour flooded the field, affecting playing surface also the entire look of the game. Second half, the Poles came back give it their all,and the game became very intense. there was Leonidas scored 4 goals in this game, on the other was Willimovsky, also scored 4 goals. At the end of regulation time the score was 4-4. In overtime Brazil scored twice more and won 6-5. They went to quarterfinals.

On June 12, the quarterfinals were played. All teams had to travel long distances to the next venue everyone went by train, except Italians, who had their own plane. Brazilians suffered the most from the trip. Cuban and Swiss, were tired. Cuba lost to Sweden, 8-0. The Swiss, were beaten by the strong Hungarians, 2-0. There was a real battle for Brazilians, on June 12, in Bordeaux, Brazil took in Czechoslovakia. 1934 finalist retained their stars goalie Planicka, so finde match was anticipated. Unfortunately, 2 Brazilian players, Machado and Zeze Procopio, were sent off, plus Riha from Czechoslovakia. Leonidas and Peracio were injuredand Planicka and Nejedly were taken to hospital. 25,000 spectators witnessed a 90-minute game and overtime still tied game, Violence reigned. In total 9 Brazilians and 8 Czechoslovakians were injured. A true war.

2 days later, on June 14, 1938, the Brazilians entered the same stadium with a new team and the game was beautiful, fair and well played. Brazil won 2-1, Brazil was in the semifinals.

On June 12, French played against the Italians, at Colombes stadium in Paris with 58,455 spectators, the largest attendance during this World Cup. 1-1 first-half, but Italy improved in second Half and won 3-1.

For the semifinals, Brazil had to travel again and they have to play Italy 2 days after two games against Czechoslovakia, and had to do it without Leonidas. Brazil lost, 2-1. Italy was in the Finals. They would have play against Hungary, who had an easy victory against Swedes, 5-1, in Parc des Princes.

Brazil finished 3rd, beating Sweden int the consolation game 4-2.

The third World Cup in France, had been quit a success with a total of 374,937 spectators. For the 55,000 Spectators and president of the French Republic, the finals was a fitting celebration. The French rooted the Hungarians though the Italians were clearly better; at halftime, they were already ahead 3-1. In the second-half Hungarians scored and the hopes were raised a little. However, ten minutes from time Italy scores 4-2 the final score. Italy was two-time World Cup winner - the best team without a doubt. If the 20's belonged to Uruguay, the 30's belonged to Italians, they won World Cups 1934 and 1938, and the Olympic Title in 1936.

The World Cup was interrupted, unfortunately, for the next 12 years by World War II. What would become of Soccer? And the World Cup? There would be no World Cup in 1942 or 1946, but Brazil would host the World Cup in 1950 and make it a success.

Goalkeeper development is the most neglected area of youth soccer. In a typical team practice, the keeper is virtually ignored; yet, in typical match, he receives much or all the blame for a goal. there is no justification for this. The only solution is to concentrate on the needs of the goalkeeper, and spend more time on her development.

The keeper must function as part of a team; anything that unduly separates her from the field players may harm team unity. The current vogue of or excessive flair, unusual dress, overly large gloves, and a permissive attitude on the part of the keeper only undermines this cohesion. As Joe Machnik says, "The goalkeeper really is No.1, but must always prove it by performances".

State of the art goalkeeper instruction emphasize the similarities, rather than the difference, between this position and any field position. This is because the keeper, like any other player, must make decisions and protect the space behind her. In this context, footwork is of vital importance. After all, keeper must cover ground, change direction, leap, dive, dribble, and kick; all this requires as much footwork as a field player. Therefore the goalie should be first and foremost a soccer player, capable of all field techniques and tactics. At the youth level, every field player should be given keeper instruction and experience. Without field experience, a goalie is tactically impoverished. Like defenders, keeper need to proper mental disposition, especially a positive outlook regarding their ability do deny goals. They must exemplify mental toughness. Keeper often see all goals as saveable and a result of their own error, though this is fallacy. Nevertheless, this attitude frequently causes them to try to rectify all causes of goals. As long as this personal responsibility outlook remains positive, this can be a great asset to any team. In addition, keeper must be highly motivated to work independently at times.

Physically goalies should be good athletes and also be extremely agile. Size is not critical, but quickness ability is. Keeper should know the height of their vertical jump, and train to increase it. Total fitness, flexibility, agility, power and leaping ability are great assets. Good hand are an absolute must. Training with a bounce-able medicine ball will dramatically enhance strength, toughness, and techniques. see the post article "Using the medicine ball in developing techniques".

As in overall player instruction, the starting point is technique and decision-making. For safety reasons, techniques are only as good as the decisions of how and when to use them. Therefore, as they learn to catch, box, dive, throw and kick, they must at the same time learn to apply these skills intelligently to the game. The foundation of course is to understand and implement the principles of player role. As a final defender, keeper thoroughly aware of the roles of D1, D2 and D3. Only then they will understand what is happening on the field and be able to link with the rest of the team.

Like any field player, keeper becomes the first A1 when he has the ball, and will try to penetrate with a good pass. When wing-back has the ball, the keeper may become A2, offering support. Similarly, the goalie becomes D1 on a breakaway and must protect the space, the goal, behind him. The point is the keeper is bound by the same principles as the field player.

The goalie is 1st and foremost a decision-maker. Therefore, every keeper training session must concentrate on the major areas of decision-making; namely, breakaways, crosses and dead ball situations.

THE BREAKAWAY

Breakaway is an exciting play that not only tests keeper's decision-making, but also their courage. Timing is the key in all cases. Most importantly element is to be int the "Get Set" position when the shot is taken. Even if hes angle is not perfect, he must get ready to react to shot. He must be balanced on both feet, able to move in any direction. The feet are shoulder width apart, the weight is on the toes, knees are bent and hands partially extended at the sides. In order to see all the various types of attacker(Distance, Angles) goalie should taught how to deal with each particular shot and angle, as well as in-swingers and out-swingers.

THE CROSSES

The 2nd major area is crosses. begin with dead ball crosses, the training should involve balls to be caught, boxed, parried, deflected, and when too far away, left for a field player. Keeper are placed in the proper decision making environment, and techniques is perfected in this environment. Begin with a single receiver. Work up to body contact gradually. As a keeper gain confidence and are no longer intimidated by being jostled, add more receivers Progress to a game of 4 or even more attackers versus 4 defenders. Before more complex activities can be attempted, keepers must be able to read the flight of the ball and make a good decision to deal with it. In this way keepers will learn how to attack a ball that has 4 or 5 players who are attempting to control it. 2 commands are fundamental: usually keepers call out with authority "KEEPER!" for any ball that they will attack, and"AWAY!" for any ball that a teammate must handle.

FIFA WORLD CUP 1934

Italy, a cup with political "smell" to it. The Azzuri win the delight of Mussolini. Brazil, a second rate team again. Spain vs Italy, the "battle of the cup. Austria beautiful soccer. The Uruguayans did not want to participate.

It cannot be denied that the 1934 World Cup in Italy was political. In 1929, even before the close of the 1930 Cup, the Italians petitioned to hold the next Cup and planned to win it.

Benito Mussolini was in power, Fascism was spreading, and "il Duce" wanted to show off his New Italy. General Giorgio Vaccaro was told by Mussolini to obtain the rights to the cup at any cost. Doing everything in his power, he finally succeeded after the eighth FIFA congress. It was not until 1932 that FIFA decided on Italy, and they would have to pay all the expenses. General Vaccaro had chosen the journalist Vitorio Pozzo to organize a plan that would win the title for the country. The format for the world cup was established in 1931. There would be 16 national teams chosen by qualifying matches throughout the world.

32 National teams registered for qualifying matches. There were only 29 left after Peru, Chile and Turkey did not confirm their registration. England did not take part and it was a very regrettable "forfeit". Uruguayans would also not participate. The Uruguay was no longer as strong as in 1924, 1928 and 1930, their soccer was in crisis. Argentina was also having difficulties.

In the 1930 Cup had been a South American events, the 1934 World Cup was a European event.

Italy's main obstacle to winning the title would be Austria and Spain. The Cup began on may 27 in 8 stadiums: Bologna, Florence, Genoa, Milan, Rome, Turin, Naples and Trieste. There were 8 top seeds with simple elimination the format, a change from the first Cup. In Rome, the Italians finished off the U.S 7-1. In Genoa, Spain brought an end to the Brazilian dream, Scoring 3-0 during the 1st half and another goal in 2nd half. In Naples, there was a difficult 1st half for Hungary 2-2 playing against Egypt, but Hungarians won 4-2. In Trieste, Czechoslovakia won against the Romania 2-1, thanks to the great goalie Planicka. Switzerland played well against the Holland in Milan, 3-2. The Germans won against the Belgian 5-2 in Florence. In Bologna, Argentina lost to Sweden 3-2, with many of its "stars" absent.

Only European teams were to be in quarterfinals. Italy, Spain, Austria, Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Switzerland, Germany and Sweden. In this round Austria fought a real battle against Hungary 2-1, in Bologna. The German beat the Swedes in Milan. The Swiss gave Czechoslovakia a hard time, but they were eventually eliminated 3-2. But the game that went down to history was played in Florence, where Italy met Spain. It was 2 hours of spectacular soccer, on a scorching day, in a sold-out stadium. The goalkeepers Zamora for Spain and Combi for Italy, were true heroes. Spain scored 1-0 in 1st half, thanks to Regueiro. In the 2nd half, the game was tied a goal by Ferrari from Italy. The match went overtime, but there were no more goals. It was 2 hours of intense playing, with injuries on both sides. In the 2nd game 24 hours later, seven of Spain's players did not play, including the goalie and the captain Zamora. Italy won the 2nd game 1-0, with a goal by Meazza.

Italy's next game played against Austria, was also a test of fire. It had rained a great deal on June e, 1934. The Italians were still tired from 3 games in one week, and 210 minutes of soccer against Spain (a World Cup record). Austria did not play their highest standards on this heavy pitch and wound up losing 1-0 goal again by Meazza. Italy was closing in on the title.

ITALY, THE CHAMPION

Mussolini, who had attended all of Italy's games, was in Rome on June 10, 1934 for the final and the confidently anticipated victory. Italians played against Czechoslovakia. All the government ministers were there. It looked like a political rally with people shouting for Italy and "il Duce". Here a fascist government needed the victory and the prestige it would bring. It was a very nerve-wrecking game. The 1st half was rough, almost brutal, and ended 0-0. At the 25minute mark, a corner was shot by Puc and the score was 1-0 to Czechoslovakia. There were utter silence in the Rome stadium, all eye on the clock. It was now at the 40-minute mark. The Argentine-Italian Guita made a perfect pass to the Argentine-Italian Orsi. He went into the area and shot, Italy had tied. There was overtime. Could Italy improve?

In overtime, even though Meazza was injured, Schario was able to score and thereby give Italy the World Cup championship. The Italians had deserved the title. They had played 3 difficult games and had overcome all the obstacle. The physical preparation and courage asked of them alone made them deserving of the title. It was regrettable that the Cup was used as propaganda for Benito Mussolini and his government. The Cup was success in terms of the number of spectator and revenues. The political overtones had made the cup far from what Rimet had dreamed of. Combi accepted the Cup and celebrated with his team mates and Pozzo, their coach. At the same time, the Blackshirts gave a huge bronze trophy to the winning players. This was the 1934 World Cup.

Principles of Defense

Yes, there is a defense, after offense! Defense may be half of the game, but should not comprise half of the practice time. Overemphasis on defense at and early age can hinder player development. At youth levels, every player should spend some time as a defender and goalkeeper, and learn to take pride in these roles. Young player must first concentrate on technical and tactical skill of attack, then learn ways to play intelligently when the other team has the ball.

Whenever there are attacking and defending counterparts, the attacking instruction comes first. Example, first attacker instruction precedes first defender instruction, dribbling precedes tackling, offensive restarts precede defensive ones, and so on. Good defense will not exist until players are comfortable with the ball and encouraged to play offense. In fact, the quality of a team's defense cannot be tested until it faces a good offense.

The decision of defensive style (High Pressure vs Low Pressure, Man to Man vs Zonal) depends upon the immediate situation, the personnel, the particular third of the field, and the score. For example, a team that is behind in the score may play high pressure defense in order to regain possession; a team that is ahead in the score may opt for low pressure defense in order to protect its final third.

The ability to play both man-to-man and zonal defense should be a primary defensive objective for the youth coach. this takes more than one season, but the benefits in terms of understanding and teamwork are well worth the effort. Defense is above all a mental disposition, where the mind drives the body.

Many young players intuitively mark tightly when they are closed to the ball, and loosely when they are not. this is the first step toward zonal defense, and is easily developed in small-sided games. Encourage players to loosely mark the attacker who is farthest from the ball. then observe how these defenders cover the proper space. They should place themselves goalside, and be able to see the their man and the ball. The instruction integrate technique, principles of player roles, tactics, and finally, functional training. To progress immediately from techniques to functional training hinders players development. This error lead to poor decision-making and lack of teamwork. It reinforces blind clearing kick and overcommitment by impatient defenders who are misled into thinking that their 1st objective is to win the ball.

In developing individual defensive skill, the many attacking activities previously described will expose players to most defensive situations. In this activities coaches will be able to identify those players with the proper mental disposition of good judgment, patience, and discipline. Such players can serve as models for the rest, since every player becomes a defender the moment possession is lost.

What these players seem to do intuitively may be consciously taught to other players: Stay on your Feet. If cover is offered by a A2, win the ball ; if not, keep the attacker from turning with the ball; if the attacker does turn, force a back or square pass, or shepherd him across the field or along the touchline, protect the space behind you. Be patient! Do not tackle when the attacker has full control. The moment to tackle is when the attacker is half turned, or has just dribbled the ball and no longer has contact with it. Tackling when the attackers has contact on the ball requires the defender's all out effort and weight behind the ball. In this case, lifting the ball over the attacker's foot will usually help.

These individual skills are the foundation of small group tactics. Together they are the key to quality defense, which team is DEFENSE.

The Principles of Player Role in Soccer

The basic principle of soccer deal with the contrast between Attack and Defense.

THE ATTACKERS : Attacks begins the instant a team gains possession of the ball, sometimes sooner. The responsibilities of the attacking team involve in three major roles, we call it First, Second and the Third attacker.

FIRST ATTACKER(A1) : is the player in possession of the ball or about to receive the ball, regardless of his position on the field. A1' main responsibility is PENETRATION; to get in behind the defenders. If within scoring range, the first objective is to score a goal.Otherwise he will try to move the ball forward with dribbling or a penetrating pass. A1 attempts to get the ball to the most dangerous location possible. The mental responsibility of A1 may be the easiest, but penetration is the single most difficult skill in soccer, requiring excellent technique. Imaginative, Skillful dribbling and shielding, accompanied by deft passing, are difficult and important.

SECOND ATTACKER(A2) : the A1 become much more dangerous when A2 creates quality SUPPORT, thus giving the attack the depth and width it needs to be effective. it gives A1 more option. A2 can generate penetration by receiving pass( becoming A1), or by drawing defender away. A2's main responsibility is to ensure possession, by always being ready to receive from A1's pass, A2 may gain an advantage by offering quality support in front of A1. However be ready to become first defender if the ball is lost.

THIRD ATTACKER(A3) : there may be several A3, whose job is to create MOBILITY by disturbing the defense through positioning and running diagonally or across the field. This movements designed to get behind and spread the defense. A3 draws defense's attention and disturbs its balance. This creates opening or passing lanes for the A1. A3 make many runs which do not reward them with a pass, yet they help attack immensely by creating space and confusing the defense. The role of the A3 is the most complex of the attacking roles.

THE DEFENDERS : A sophisticated offense requires a worthy defense if it is to develop further. Therefore, once players have developed confidence in individual and small group usage of the ball, then and only then we do begin teaching defensive roles. there are three roles of defense, which begins the moment possession of the ball is lost.

FIRST DEFENDER(D1) : is the player who marks the first attacker. The major responsibility of the D1 is to delay the attack and put pressure on the ball. note that the D1 priority is not to immediately attempt to win ball through aggressive play or tackling. the essence is to stop penetration, whether by pass, dribble or shot. D1 protect the goal by staying goal-side of A1. He must be patient; once there is a cover (a D2 to assist him), he may attempt to win the ball. D1 is successful when he prevents penetration in any form; that is:

He delay A1 until defensive cover arrives(D2)
He wins the ball
He prevents A1 from turning towards goal or looking up
He forces A1 to make a poor pass
He forces A1 to make a square or backward pass
He forces A1 to dribble across the field or backwards.

Alternately D1 is unsuccessful when he allows A1 to penetrate in any way (dribble forward, pass forward or shoot). Where D1 is defending against two attackers, he is successful when the defense recovers to a two-versus-two, or better.

SECOND DEFENDER(D2) : is usually the next closest to the ball after D1. The role of D2 is to offer cover for D1. The first job is to assist D1 by positioning himself behind D1 and communicating with him (such as telling him when to tackle). This provides depth for the defense and forces A1 to deal with two defenders. D2's second role is to mark A2, but he cannot mark him closely as to deny cover for D1. In fact, he may invite pass from A1 to A2, but if this is a square or backward pass, D2 is successfully doing his job. D2 must play a man, a space and the ball simultaneously, as well as use the offside law to his advantage. All this requires vision. D2 is successful when he provides good cover for D1. If A1 beats D1 or passes to A2, D2 must be ready to become the D1.

THIRD DEFENDER(D3) : as in the attacking roles, there may be several D3 , who add CONCENTRATION and BALANCE to the defense. They accomplish this by staying goal-side of the player they mark, restricting, space, providing tight marking in the vital area and communicating. While all defenders must work hard when the ball is moving, this is especially true for the D3, because they are generally further from their men/ball. D3 may mark an attacker, cover space, or both.

A1 will try to penetrate. Note A2 has excellent opportunity to receive (Support). A3 is allowing for a long pass (Mobility), but definitely keeping D3 from A1.

Unlike the standard dead weight Medicine Ball, the KWIK MEDECINE BALL has life (bounce) which makes it useful for many exercises and drills. Field players can use it to improve distance and accuracy of trow-ins, while Goalkeepers can use it to develop techniques. For example, the "pull back" movement (as in baseball catching) is facilitated due to the weighted ball. Some medicine ball activity can be done in seasons or out, outdoors, in gym, basement or living room.

DEVELOPING THROW-IN USING MEDICINE BALL

Using the medicine ball for throw-ins develops distance, which in turn helps accuracy. A proper program for use of medicine ball essentially the same for all power work. players throw the medicine ball 6-12 repetitions, then throw a regulation ball 6-12 repetitions. Repeat this cycle 3 to 5 times(set). Using this program every other day (3times a week), for four to six weeks will greatly improve distance.

DEVELOPING GOALKEEPER ATTRIBUTES USING MEDICINE BALL

Essential goalkeeper attributes such as agility, mobility and footwork all begin with flexibility; its weight slows down the movement so that each muscle must work more fully through its range. Here are some Flexibility exercises using Medicine Ball.

Two-handed Bounce/Catch : Keeper stands with feet facing one direction, bounces ball and catches it, using hand and body lift to cushion catch. Without moving feet from original position, and behind player as he/she twist for abdominal flexibility.
Overall Flexibility : Lying on back while holding medicine ball between the feet, the keeper slowly lifts leg overhead to achieve maximum safe stretch. the ball helps the neck, back, trunk and legs to stretch.
Flexibility and Ball Handling : These activities can be done alone or with partner. Alone, keeper rolls the ball on the ground in figure eight patters through legs, then bounces the ball through the legs in various ways, such as front to back, back to front and sideways. These activities can be incorporated into warm-up and stretching.

Another area of keeper techniques is QUICKNESS AND FOOTWORK. here are some suggestions for developing these important qualities using the Medicine Ball.

Quickness of Reflexes and Catching : Keeper faces wall a few yards away. A server behind the keeper throws ball over keeper's head at wall; keeper must react quickly to make the catch. Giving with the weighted ball insure proper techniques.
Footwork : two server alternate serves to each post. Keeper saves the ball at one post, return to its server, and immediately used side to side shuffle to save ball at other post. Steps must be small enough to maintain balance and allow for quick change of direction. After initial stage, serves can be at random, so that the keeper must change direction quickly.

DEVELOPING PURE HAND STRENGTH

Strength Development : Working in pairs, each player tries to wrestle the ball away from the others. Using hands only builds a better grip of the ball. Many different starting position can be used, such as lying, kneeling, and sitting.

DEVELOPING CATCHING SKILL

In the area of catching skill, medicine ball emphasizes several important techniques. try the following progression.

Developing "W" Catch Skill : Modern keeping demands a partial closing of "W" so the fingers are behind the ball. sometime its called "O" catching. Fingertip catching and quietness are emphasized. Begin with ground ball catches with proper form, then sideways catches of low balls.
Diving Saves : In the diving progression, the weight of the ball helps to carry the keeper through the proper motion. Emphasis is on lifting the hips so that hands are free to make saves low, away and high. The medicine ball provides cushion.

Another technical areas is MULTIPLE SAVES. the pace and intensity of this exercises can be adjusted, with frequent breaks for technical training and rapid succession for fitness training.

High/Low Multiple Saves : Server alternates high and low ball for keeper. Emphasize quickness and the proper mental disposition of constant effort until ball is safely in keeper's hand. Do at three rapid repetitions. Variation include emphasizing 1 area, dives and recovering from dive.

For improving Distribution technique, the medicine ball can be thrown or rolled to targets, improving accuracy, then distance. The keeper throws at a target, keeping score of the number of hits. When the target is hit ten times in a row, increase distance.

Practicing In-Step Kick and Techniques (Keeping The Ball Low)

First thing to do is warn-up and stretching (15 mins.). Dribble the ball for pre-stretch warm-up. Stretch all 7 basic muscle areas. warm-up having 4 players in a group 3 maintaining possession, 1 defends, as drill in progress let players move 8 yards apart and use the In-Step Kick

Techniques:

Ankle locked, Toe down

Non-kicking foot facing target and on side of ball a little distance away.

Eye on exact place of kicking (Middle of ball)

Strike center slightly above the midpoint (Strike the top half of the ball. Touch the correct spot on the ball)

Head down and steady - see foot hit through the ball

Identify proper place on footwear that should contact the ball (Center of shoe laces preferred) with a very slight turning in of the foot.

Follow through so that non-kicking foot is lifted from the ground and player lands on kicking foot.

Demonstrate the knee lift by striking a ball 4 or 5 times that is held in place. Knee over ball for low trajectory

In shooting, accuracy comes first, then power

Use your hand for body balance

Continue practicing with ball rolling slowly toward the player, continue also kicks with one touch dribble.

Increase difficulty by rolling ball toward side, with a bounce, receive-turn-shoot, etc.

7 Basic Muscle Area

Neck Area - side to side, forward to back. Overcome hands pressure of self, or teammate. Never omit neck area since the occurrence of injuries int this area can be catastrophic.

Upper and Lower Back - forward, backward and sideways.

Abdominal - often neglected but widely used in soccer.

Groin Area

Upper Leg - front and back (Thigh and Hamstring)

Lower leg - calf and side (Achilles)

Ankles and Arches - ankles rotated; arches by standing on toes for approx. 10 sec.

When in possession all players must think , act, support and be offensive; when other team has possession, everyone is on defense.

Offense usually wants to spread out, that is, use full width of the field and have depth, though overloads often take place at the same time.

Defense should want some compactness, cover and pressure on the ball. On any change of possession, these behaviors should be immediately visible (Spreading out or compactness).

A player spends better than 95% of the game time without the ball; learn to useful without the ball (Dummy runs, etc)

Call for the ball by accelerating to a receiving position (Generally open space).

Help your teammate, "Man on", "Turn", "I got ball". Offense is characterized by visual or action communication, while defense has more voice usage. (However communication is a must!).

If you have a cover on defense you can attack the ball.Without cover you must delay, give weak side help, stay goal side.

Even long clearing should have an intended receiver. Almost all ball contacts (passes) must attempt to insure possession, with gambles taken in vicinity of goal in order to score.

Use feints to provide time and space.

Have intentions even before you receive a ball. Learn to visually check all around you on a regular basis. Try to work with your head up when in possession.

Players must communicate constantly.

FIFA WORLD CUP 1930

The Cup opened while the Centenario Stadium was still under construction! Only 4 European countries participated in spite Jules Remit's efforts.

The 1st World cup Dominated by American teams like Brazil, Argentina, U.S.A., Peru, Paraguay, Mexico, Chile, Bolivia and powerhouse Uruguay, the host. Altogether, there were 13 nat'l teams participating.

THE STADIUM

After the Uruguay was chosen to host the cup, authorities had to solve the problem of building a stadium. The country was small and many of its 1,900,000 populations facing a unemployment. but the World Cup performed the "MIRACLE" of bringing all these forces together. the game could not be played on field of Nacional Club in Montevideo,nor on Penarol's, in Pocitos. So the government donated section of the battle and Ordones Park to create a "Megastadium" accommodating 80,000 spectators. The work had to be done almost overnight to ready it for July 10. A daring project designed by architect Juan Scasso and his asst.Domatto. The Stadium was named CENTENARIO, in honor of 100th anniversary of Uruguayan Constitution. When the Cup began the 1st game was not played in the stadium because of the FIELD. it complied with the official size of 110x80 meters. in opening day the field was not considered safe for playing.

THE CUP

Jules Remit and Maurice Fisher created the format of the CUP. they decided on 4 groups, The winner of each group will play in semifinals and winner will play to the final game for the title. Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay and U.S. where chosen as the top seeds. U.S got a talented players like American-Scottish player as Alex Wood, Gallacher, James Brown and MacGhee so they are at top seed. The opening game was on July 13, with a win of France4-1Mexico, U.S.3-0Belgium. The 1st game played in CENETARIO stadium was on July 18, country's national day. It was Uruguayan 1st game, they played against Peru and won 1-0 goal by Castro.Centenario was sold out.

EXCITING GAME

The two most exciting game were France vs Argentina on July 15 in Parque Central, and Uruguay vs Argentina on July 30 in the Centenario. on France-Argentina game there were 80mins. of classic soccer, Argentineans on offense and French on defense. Monti scored for Argentina, from a free kick. in other side the french down to 10 player, played offensively pushing hard and at 84mins mark the referee whistled to end the game. the field invaded, complaints everywhere and linesman convinced that referee's error. The game continued but the french lost their momentum resulted in 1-0 for Argentina. That's the beginning of Uruguay and Argentineans rivalry, a rivalry that existed since the Olympic games in 1928. both make through the finals, Argentina beat U.S. 6-1 same score of Uruguay against Yugoslavia. The Stage is set for finals, the Argentinean fans try to invade Montevideo, celebration held in streets by defiant fans. It was so intense even the referee John Langenus received a special protection. 90,000 spectators watch the historic final of the 1st World Cup.

1st half, before the game there was a big discussion about the ball should be used. In the end Langenus the referee decided that there would be different one in each team. The game begin with Uruguay on attack. 12mins mark, the score was 1-0, goal by Pablo Dorado. the Centenario went wild. but Argentineans, were not frustrated. they controlled the field and at 20 min, they tied the score, a goal from Carlos Peucelle. later Guillermo Stabile scored for Argentina, the score made him the leading scorer in the 1st World Cup. 1st half ended in 2-1. the Centenario was silent.

2nd half, the referee disallowed the goal when Uruguayans put the ball in the net through Nazassi. But Pedro Cea's equalizing goal in 12min. did count. The silence exploded. From then on it became increasingly difficult for Argentinean. Uruguay scored 3-2, following a spectacular team play in the 68min. then Hector Castro scored 4-2. that's the end. everyone went wild, chants were sung. fireworks went off and festivities started.

Awarding, Uruguay president , Dr. Cimpistegui, standing next to Jules Remit look on as Jose Nazassi, Uruguay team captain, received the "Winged Golden Goddess" trophy on behalf of victor of 1st World Cup. People paraded and celebrated, ship blew their horns. The event had been success. It was also a financial success, with profits equal to $225,000 today, allowing Uruguayans to pay all their expenses. The WORLD CUP begun, to the light of all soccer fans.

There are many tales about how soccer began. there are stories of soccer in china called it Zuqui.. in Ancient times.. in the middle ages and in Italy called it Harspatum. The truth begins in England.

There, a hundred years ago a conflict about rules among players of rugby resulted in 1 dissident group starting a new sport that became soccer. Same as soccer we play today, you could use both hands and feet, whereas goalkeeper can use their hands. The word "Soccer" originated from the derived word (Assoc=Association), from North America.

Before World Cup, Olympic soccer games is the most prestigious international championships. England won the first title in 1908 and 1912. But the FIFA already existed at that time.

Since those early days soccer has been quite impressive. It wasn't until the start of this century, national teams and FIFA began to organize themselves. France, Holland, Belgium, Switzerland, Spain, Denmark and Sweden were the "The first 7" or "Founding Fathers" of FIFA in 1904 and in 1905, Germany, Austria, Italy, Hungary and England joined the organization.

There is a time that the soccer world dealt with the problem of world ward I and the world cup discussion cooled down until 1920's. On May 26,1928, in Amsterdam, Jules Rimet and fellow FIFA members agreed to hold 1st Cup: on September 8, 1928,in Zurich, Switzerland. The countries agreed that the Cup should be held every 4 years and that the first one would be in 1930. At FIFA congress in Barcelona held on May 17 and 18 the following year, URUGUAY was chosen to host the 1st Cup in recognition of winning the Olympic titles in Paris in 1924 and in Amsterdam in 1928. Finally, the first WORLD CUP had been arranged, but it had not been an easy road to travel.

HOW FIFA AND WORLD CUP BEGAN

World soccer began to get organized at the turn of the century. National Federations already existed,but an international organization to supervise the game among the world's countries was lacking. Wilhelm Hirschmann, a Dutchman who wrote down some rules on May 8, 1902 and approved by some football organization. At a business meeting on May 21, 1904, the rules went into effect and FIFA, the International Federation of Soccer Associations, got its start.

Thanks to the insistence of Robert Guerin from France, Vic Schnieder from Switzerland, Hirschmann from Holland, Muhlinghaus and Kahn from Belgium, Sylow from Denmark, and Spir from France. At the meeting at the HQ of French Union of Athletic Sports, these men became the the founders of FIFA.

There was a talk again about the World Cup in 1914. It was Hirschmann, Dutchman, was so persistent. He even thought Olympic should become World Cup. But only the FIFA supervision could the Olympic be organized as a World soccer championship. It would have to follow the FIFA regulation.

World War 1 (1914-1918) interrupted any attempt to bring about a World Cup. Europe was involved in the war. After war, in 1919, the issue was brought up in Belgium. In 1920, new FIFA board was elected and Jules Rimet became the new president, Luis Oestrup V-President and Hirschmann the honorary secretary.It was Hirschmann that kept the FIFA flame alive.

With Jules(Born on October 24, 1871, in Theuley, France) a new soccer era began. besides European country, South Africa-1912, Argentina and Chile-1912 and united states-1913 joined FIFA. When Rimet left FIFA in 1954, There were 85 members.

FIFA presented three proposals to the executive committee, which, among other things, mentioned a European Cup every two years and a World Cup every four years. but when they discuss at conference they postponed for another year. May 26, 1928, FIFA congress was held in Amsterdam and with the active, decisive and convincing participation of Jules Rimet, the following proposal was made and the 1st meeting of commission was held on September 8,1928 in Zurich, Switzerland. The resolution were agreed approved (Beginning in 1930, FIFA would organize a competition every four years called the WORLD CUP. A trophy, a work of art, presented to the winner by the Federation. The competition would be held between May 15 and June 15. At 2nd meeting on January 19, 1929, in Geneva, Switzerland, the previously drawn-up regulation were finalized.

After 25 years and numerous attempts, the WORLD CUP finally became reality. The Uruguayans was selected to host the event due to the fact that 1930 was the year of their Independence Centennial and that their Olympic soccer victories 1924 and 1928 in Paris and Amsterdam made Uruguay made a well-qualified host. The Congress in Barcelona accepted Uruguay's argument and MONTEVIDEO became the home of the 1930 WORLD CUP...

The Organizing Committee of the first world cup member: Enrique Buero from Uruguay, Fisher-Germany, Hirschmann-Holland, Johanson-Sweden and Zanetti from Italy. The 1st meeting of the Committee was held in Nuremberg on July 18, 1929. the Cup Cup's regulation were written in 4 languages: German, Spanish, French and English.

Organizing the Cup was no easy task. the European have to interrupt their competitions and undertaking the long ocean voyage at a time of serious economic crisis in Europe. But thanks to Rimet's personal effort the Cup was held.He was finally successful in getting Belgium, Romania, Yugoslavia and France to accept the invitation. He directly involve and helped solve player problem in order to form national team France.

int the end, Four European country and nine from America participated. Uruguay, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil Bolivia, Chile, Peru,Mexico and U.S.A. The European team welcomed by very inquisitive crowd. Jules Rimet had also come, bringing within the statue, 12 inches high, weight 8 pounds, made of pure gold, and sculpted by the Frenchman Abel Lafluer-The Cup!

The assembly was complete. There actually was to be a WORLD CUP after all...

Shoes play a big role for a player it enhance the performance of a player, helps you play at your best and prevent you from having an injury. There's a different kind of soccer shoe each one performed dependent to the playing surface, playing ground and field condition.Choosing the right shoe is a must for a player and a proper fitting shoe is a game essential.

I've been in Malaysia once to attend an AFC Referees course and to officiate AFC Under-14 Tournament, May 26-June 6, 2010. AFC instructors teach us some techniques of picking right soccer boot and i share it to you some of it, Here are some tips for you!

1st : The shoe sole must be hard it cant be bend or twist for durability while you are moving or running. Hard shoe sole support your feet from all the impact you get from running, jumping and everything you do in game and also protect you from injury. It does have a dozen of studs on the sole to provide extra grip. without the studs you will be sliding all over the place and may cause injury to yourself and also to other players. Shoe hard-sole help provide traction and better control.

2nd : The tip of your boots should fit as close to the end of your foot as possible without touching your toes for performance and comfort. A 1/4 to 1/2 inch gap is ideal. As a basic rule of thumb, every 1/2 size will yield about 4mm (3/16 inch) of length. The tip should be narrow for better feel of controlling the ball.

3rd : The width of the boot should fit the whole of your feet snugly even tough you can give a little space in front side of boot for durability. Its because your Toe Mound is expanding when you're stepping forward to run or move. Proper fit is essential, provides better mobility and keep your foot steady inside the boot. With or without space, its up to you which one help you play well, controlled and kick ball well, and run and turn with comfort.

4th : The back heel of the boot should be hard so it will absorb shock while you run during the game. Shocks from running can effect performances or causes fatigue because our body weight is concentrated in heel and absorb force during impact on the ground, so you are more pron in injury. The hard back heel of you're boot can prevent stress on Heel to avoid unnecessary injury. With it, It will help you perform a better kick and most off-it your best performance.
