Oldest School in Kerala | St. Joseph's Boys' Higher Secondary School, Kozhikode | 227 Years of Legacy

St. Joseph's Boys' Higher Secondary School, located in Kozhikode, is one of the oldest educational institutions in Kerala and was started in 1793. The school run by the Society of Jesus.

According to the historian, it was originally started in 1792, the British government acquired areas under the Malabar region which include Kozhikode also. Then a bustling port town, from Tipu Sultan’s forces after the end of the Third Anglo-Mysore war. And a year later, in 1793, St Joseph’s European School took birth, originally for teaching the children of employees of the East India Company.

The school today has two streams: the English and the Malayalam media.

The school is supposed to have achieved its composite development under the reign of the Carmelite priests in 1861. Their authority extended from 1861 to 1878.

In the year of 1906, the school got acknowledged by Code of Regulations and became the European High School.

The school published its first-ever magazine " Josephite" in 1913.

Finally, the "Jamia Millia Islamia University" has given the deemed status by the University Grants Commission in the year of 1962. On 26 December 1988, it converted into a Central University by an act of Parliament.

Oldest School in Rajasthan | Mayo College | 145 Years Old Legacy

"Mayo College" is known as one of the oldest Public Schools in the Rajasthan state which origin dates back to 1869, when "Col. F K M Walter", the Political Agent of the Bharatpur Agency recommended to open a school in India.

According to the historian in 1870, the "Lord Mayo", the then Viceroy and Governor-General, came to Ajmer, wherein a Darbar, before the Chiefs of the ruling Princes of Rajputana, he expressed his desire to set up a 'Raj Kumar College' in Ajmer, "devoted exclusively to the education of the sons of Chiefs, Princes and leading Thakurs."

In the year 1875, Richard Southwell Bourke (6th Earl of Mayo), founded the school which is now called "Mayo College".

The College was opened its door in October 1875, with Sir Oliver St. John as the first Principal and one boy, Maharaja Mangal Singh of Alwar.

1. Aliah University (1780)

The "Aliah University" ( or AU) is one of the oldest modern-style educational institutes existed in India. The college was established in October 1780 by Warren Hastings who was appointed as a British Governor-general of East India Company. Earlier the college was known by name "Mohammedan College of Calcutta". The college was originally set up at Bow Bazaar, Kolkata in 1782 later moved to its campus on Wellesley Square in the 1820s.

The origin of the "Zakir Husain Delhi College" can be traced to the closing years of the 17th Century, with the establishment of a Madrasa by "Ghaziuddin Khan". It is known as the oldest existing educational institution in India. According to the historian the Mughal Empire was weakend during the 18th century which result in the closure of the Madrasa in the early 1790s. Finally an oriental college for literature, science and art, was established at the site in 1792 with the support of the wealthy citizens of Delhi.

The "Presidency University" was originally established in 1817 and it was known as "Hindu College" at that time. Later it was transformed into the "Presidency College of Bengal" in 1855. The College was formally started on Monday, 20 January 1817 with 20 'scholars'.

4. CMS College, Kottayam (1817)

The "CMS College", Kottayam was established in 1817 by the Church Missionary Society of England. In 1857 the CMS college was affiliated to Madras University. Now it is one of the largest colleges in Kerala.

The "Senate of Serampore College", Serampore was founded on July 15, 1818, under the establishing leadership of William Carey, Joshua Marshman, and William Ward, from the English Baptist Missionary.

The "Deccan College" was originally started on 06 October 1821. It was opened with the name "Hindoo College" at that time. It renamed as "Poona College" in the year of 1851 and later changed to its current name in October 1864. The College was closed down by the British Government in 1934 however it was reopened on 17th August 1939 and named as "Deccan College, Post-Graduate and Research Institute".

7. Robertson College, Jabalpur (1836)

The "Robertson College", Jabalpur was established in 1836 and back then it set up as a "Sagar Govt. School". Later it was upgraded to "Sagar Collegiate School" in the year of 1860. The institution was moved to Jabalpur in 1873. It is considered as one of the oldest institutions in Madhya Pradesh. Just after Independence of India, the college is renamed as "Mahakaushal Mahavidyalaya" and finally, it now is known as "Government Science College".

The "Presidency College" was formally established on 16 October 1840 as a "Madras Preparatory School" and later, upgraded to a high school and then, graduate college. Presidency College is one of the oldest government arts colleges in India.

The "IIT-Roorkee College" was founded in 1847 AD as the First Engineering College under the British Colonial Empire. The College was then named as "The Thomason College of Civil Engineering" in 1854. The IIT-Roorkee Institute has an eminent history and a remarkable past.

"Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology" (or IIEST) is located at Shibpur, Howrah, West Bengal owes its origin to the erstwhile Bengal Engineering College. The university starts functioning on 24 May 1875. The college was formerly affiliated with the University of Calcutta and afterwards got affiliated with the University of Allahabad in 1885.

"Indian Veterinary Research Institute" ( or IVRI) was established in 1889 and located at Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh. The Institute was formerly known as "Imperial Bacteriological Laboratory" however it was renamed in 1925 as "Imperial Veterinary Research Institute".

RB Ranchhodlal Chhotalal Girls High School is a girl's high school, located in Ahmadabad, Gujarat, India. It is one of the oldest girls school in the country.

The "RB Ranchhodlal Chhotalal Girls High School" was started by "Gujarat Vernacular Society" in the year 1892.

The school got his name as RB Ranchhodlal Chhotalal Girls High School, after the chief donor, the textile-mill pioneer of Gujarat, "Rao Bahadur Seth Ranchhodlal Chhotalal" who is known as "Pioneer Man of Modern Ahmedabad".

RB Ranchhodlal Chhotalal (1823-1898) was inspired very much by Mr Jagannath SunGkersett and Jamsetjee Jeejeebhoy who were creating civic institutions like universities, schools and hospitals in Bombay to improve the lives of the people. This makes RB Ranchhodlal Chhotalal follow their footprint and after encouraging an urban renovation in Ahmedabad, he was now able to bring about cultural transformation.

He opened the first high school in the city, called "R C High School", in 1846; and the first women's hospital in Ahmedabad, called "Victoria Jubilee Hospital", in 1865. He was also responsible for restarting "Gujarat College" in 1879.

In the second phase, he financially supported the "Gujarat Vernacular Society" to start a girls’ high school, presently named as "R B Ranchhodlal Chhotalal Girls High School", in 1892.

According to the historian, this school was not only the first girl's school in the Ahmedabad town but also of Gujarat state.

The school was guided by noted women activist "Vidyagauri Nilkanth" in the first half of 20th century.

"Vidyagauri Nilkanth" is known as an Indian social reformer, an educationist, and writer. She was also one of the first two women who graduate in Gujarat state.

Just after Independence of Indian, in 1976 this society changed his name from "Gujarat Vernacular Society" to "Gujarat Vidhya Sabha". Its main aim is to promote vernacular Gujarati literature and education.

Lucknow is home to some prominent schools and colleges dating back to the colonial era. Colvin Taluqdars' College is one such educational institution that has a history of its own.

There was a time when people used to talk about " Ilm and Talim" in any part of the country, then there was a mention of Lucknow. Colvin Talukaidar College was also included in it.

This Colvin Taluqdars' College with a beautiful and happy past is today one of the leading schools in the city.

According to most of the historian, Sir Auckland Colvin (1838-1908) was a British Empire official in India and Egypt. He was born into the renowned Anglo-Indian Colvin family. He was administrator general in Egypt and financial adviser to the Khedive.

From 1883-92 he was back in India, first as a financial member of the council, and then as Lieutenant-governor of the North-West Provinces (as his father had been) and Oudh.

Sir Auckland Colvin conceived the idea of a school with the object of imparting education to the children of the British administrators and the landed aristocracy who were known as Taluqdars and founded Colvin Taluqdars' College in Lucknow in 1889, which developed into one of the country's most prestigious public schools. The architecture of the school is an amalgamation of Mughal and colonial architectural styles.

Colvin Taluqdars' College produces young people who learn to discipline their feelings and display a strong moral fibre in their demeanour.

The Motto of the Colvin Taluqdars' College is "Noblesse Oblige" in French which translated from the original French suggests that "whoever claims to be noble must conduct himself nobly".

The Colvin Taluqdars' College has trained some of the finest minds in the country.

Till the year 1933, College education was confined to the aristocracy. The purpose of the school was to train the children of the British, princes and talukdars. Historian says that the first and most important condition for entering it at that time was that the child taking admission must be from the royal family.

Only when the British left India in 1947 did it open its doors to the general public.

The college is partially residential. It has two boarding houses Awadh and Anjuman, which can seat 150 students.

Like other schools, there is a house system here. The school has five houses - Ajanta, Nalanda, Sanchi, Taxila and Ujjain. The school has an annual sports day and a day to meet old students, which is celebrated as 'Durbar Day' in December.

According to the most education researcher the origin of St. Thomas’ School, Kidderpore, may be traced to the charity school, which in the words of Reverend W.K. Farminger, was founded somewhat between 1726 and 1731.

In 1833, a new Constitution was passed with the Governor-General as patrons.

During the era 1833-1841, there is lots of additions were made to the school.

According to the historian during the revolt of 1857, the school continued in the old school rooms.

In 1915, the large Kidderpore house property was bequeathed to the Free School Society, upon which the present school stands.

A bill called the St. Thomas’ School Act was passed by the Legislative council of Bengal in 1923.

The name of the school was also changed from the Calcutta Free School to St. Thomas’ Schools

The school began life as the School, on a site on which today stands the Scottish Church, in Dalhousie square, Calcutta, adjacent to Writer’s Buildings.

Ghazi ud-Din Khan Feroze Jung I, Hyderabad, 1690

This is an institution originally established as Madarsa Ghaziud-Din after Ghaziud-din Feroze Jung, a general of Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. The Madrasa imparted spiritual education to the elites of the city.

This school is located at Ajmeri Gate and houses a mosque and an elegant tomb (maqbara) of "Nawab Ghaziuddin" himself enclosed within lattice screens made of marble (jaali).

The real architectural sanctity of the monument comes to the beholder’s eyes once he enters Masjid Nawab Ghaziuddin Khan that is skillfully built with red Kota sandstone. Once the mosque had a well and a tank connected to it for the purpose of wuzu (ablutions). There is also a mazaar (shrine) of a saint in the northern side of the mosque.

There was a story associated with this school which is related to one of the famous person of our history "Mirza Ghalib". "Mirza Ghalib" once wished to serve this institution

A story was famous among the people here as folklore. “Ghalib Saab joined here to teach Faarsi (Persian). On his first day of service, he arrived at the school gate in his paalki and expected the staff to receive him. But the then British management told him that he would not get any special treatment. Fuming, Ghalib returned never to come back.”

Historical Background

Its has significant historical value in Delhi history and it is a well-known fact that it has produced some of the great minds of the city of Delhi give it an added edge over other institutions of Delhi. The school still preserves its original design which is started as a place for giving spiritual education to the elite class of the walled city.

According to many historians, this school was closed in early 1790 with the weakening of the Mughal Empire however with the continuous support from local nobility, it again stood as a centre for oriental literature, science, and art in the year of 1792.

Until 1827, this school was a religious seminary but after the interference of the "East India Company", the school also started the education of English, Mathematics and natural sciences.

In 1840, the institution was shifted to the Darah Shikoh (Shahajahan’s son) Library at Kashmere Gate.

During the Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, it remained closed for 7 years and reopened only in 1867.

At that time the English christened it as "Anglo Arabic College". It’s just amazing how the same premises gave rise to do many forms of temples of learning of which two are still full-fledged institutions.

Further, Anglo Arabic School is considered as heaven for the student.

Meaning of Education and its purpose in Human Life

The very meaning of education is imparting knowledge. But with my years of experience, I must say to say that only imparting knowledge is not enough in today’s world as for motto of any school is concerned. Here I would like to state on the words of Dalai Lama "When educating the minds of our youth, we must not forget to educate their hearts".

Education must nurture the boundless curiosity that all children are born with - their amazing ability to be effortlessly creative and adaptive, their natural thirst and ability to learn, to make sense of the world around. It is to aid the understanding and development of values, the responsibility of being human and the need to keep learning, evolving and making a difference.

The purpose of right education is to nurture you and help you to find your true strengths, develop them and use it for the betterment of society and to make a means of living for yourself.

The Term "Education"

The word ‘education’ has been derived from Latin words-’Educare’ and ‘Educatum’, ‘e’+ ‘duco’.

‘Educare’- The term ‘educare’ means to bring up, to rise, and to nourish, to train or mould.

‘Educatum’- Education is something which is imposed from outside.

‘E+ duco’- The term ‘E’ means out of and ‘duco’ means ‘to lead’.

From the above derivative meaning, it is revealed that education is needed for a progressive society and targeted to bring overall prosperity to the individual by unfolding his potentialities.

According to Wikipedia Encyclopedia, education in the broadest sense is any act or experience that has a formative effect on mind, character or physical ability of an individual.

It is indeed, difficult to define education. Education is a relentless process of becoming. To the human being, we educate and to the animal we train.

Purpose of "Education" is to build a good character

A person with a good character would realize that he has a responsibility towards the society hence he would be a good citizen of the country.

A person with a good character would realize that he or she has to take care of his family and maintaining the peace and harmony the whole world and thus he or she would work towards making the world a better place.

A person with a good character would develop a keen interest in improving his/her own self, his/her life, the lives of everybody around him.

A person with a good character would respect everyone and would uphold the truth.

A person with a good character will speak only the truth and would not support falsehood, corruption or such practices.

A person with a good character would follow virtuous principles to be it of religion or ethics.

A person with a good character would create an atmosphere of mutual respect, love, care and nurture even to the animals and the environment.

A person with a good character would consider himself to be part of a huge family, he would be selfless in serving others.

A person with a good character would support non-violence and self-defence.

A person with a good character would be interested in intellectual pursuits for improving his knowledge as well as he would inform and guide others.

Dr. Radhakrishnan has rightly said that: “A civilization is not built of bricks, steel and machinery, it is built with men, their quality and character”.

Aim of "Education"

Education gives us the ability to differentiate between what is right and wrong, what is immoral and moral & what is just and unjust.

Education gives a person hope to solve the problems humanity faces today.

Education gives you the power to question anything wrong.

Education helps you learn the right way to execute yourself and behave positively.

Education helps you find the truth and it forces you to think in different aspects.

Proper education removes ill beliefs.

Education makes you more aware and confident.

"Rabindranath Tagore" was a Bengali polymath who reshaped Bengali literature, as well as Indian art with Contextual Modernism. He once said, “The highest education is that which does not merely give us information but makes our life in harmony with all existence.”

"Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi" once said: "Education means all-round drawing out of the best in child and man-body, mind, and spirit." As such, education becomes the basis of personality development in all dimensions-moral, mental, and emotional.

"Munshi Premchand" was a famous Indian writer. He was also among the most praised author of 20th Century. He once said, "To be successful in life what you need is education, not literacy and degrees."

"Dr. A.P.J.Abdul Kalam" once said, "Real education enhances the dignity of a human being and increases his or her self respect."

"Chanakya," once said an "Uneducated man no matter how good he may look or to what family he may belong; he is as useless as the flower that has colour but no fragrance".

"Swami Vivekananda," once said "Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man."

"Savitribai Phule" once said "The lack of learning is nothing but gross bestiality. It is through the acquisition of knowledge that (he) loses his lower status and achieves the higher one."

Study habits lie at the core of one’s academic performance.

They determine our pace of learning, efficiency and retention capacity.

Here are some good study habits

Have a schedule and manage your day well to execute the schedule:

Making a schedule requires you to plan your work and your day.

It helps you organize your work in your head even before you attempt it.

Identify your productive hours and keep important subjects/topics for that time.

Take adequate breaks in the day.

Take a small power nap (maximum 30 minutes) it will boost your productivity.

Further, identify the triggers and indulgences that waste your time e.g. TV, Social media, YouTube, phone calls, etc. Stay away from them.

Think Positively:

Being in the right mindset can make all the difference.

Encourage your child to think positively when studying or heading into an exam and by all means, avoid catastrophic thinking.

Help your student turn negative statements like, “I’ll never have enough time to get a good grade on this exam,” into positive ones like, “I began preparing later than I should have but I put together a comprehensive study plan and will be able to get through the material prior to the exam.”

Get Organized:

Between homework, tests, and extracurricular activities, it’s all too easy for things to slip through the cracks.

A planner can help your child keep everything organized.

Students should write down assignments, appointments and to-do lists, then review items in the planner at both the beginning and end of the day to stay on track.

Designate a Study Area:

Yes, studying at the local coffee shop may seem like a good idea, but not if there are constantly people interrupting or other disruptions.

Even at home, studying in front of the TV won’t be the best use of your son or daughter’s time.

Help your child by providing a quiet, well-lit, low-traffic space for study time.

Keep break in your study schedule:

Working for all days of the week for a long duration of time will lead to burn out and disenchantment with your work.

Breaks are important to rejuvenate yourself.

Meet old friends, go for a movie or a photo-walk, it helps your brain recover from an exhausting work routine.

Silence and the library habit:

As far as possible, one should study in silence.

It reduces the exhaustion of your brain.

You can consider accessing the library of your institute or even join a public/private library for more efficiency and better focus.

Take a break in between your studies:

A number of students continue to study for a long duration of time but are not able to get good outcomes.

The fact is they continue to work with a tired mind.

After every one hour of study, it is necessary to take a break of 5–10 minutes in order to re-energize yourself.

However, the break should not last for more than 15 minutes as it breaks the rhythm of study.

Concentrate well and avoid distraction:

Keep gadgets and other distractions away while studying. The biggest distraction that our generation face is that of a mobile phone.

With messages popping up on the screen round the clock, we have become a kind of addicted to pick up the phone and check if there is a new notification. This is harmful as it consumes valuable time and dwindles concentration.

Lack of concentration makes us take more time than required on a particular portion/chapter and even affects your understanding of the same.

The mobile data and wifi connection must be switched off while studying.

Though some students may find this habit extremely tough, this discipline is the secret behind thousands of successful students.

Practice Active Listening:

It’s important for students to concentrate and avoid distractions when an instructor is presenting.

Ask your child to try concentrating on the main points being made, think about what the speaker is saying and pay attention to how things are said (gestures, tone of voice, etc.).

They should avoid talking or thinking about problems when listening.

If a teacher says, “This is important” or “I’ll write this on the board,” there is a good chance students will see the concept on an exam.

Regulate your sleep:

A sound sleep is important for retention, better interpretation, analysis and has obvious positive health implications (especially in maintaining your immunity).

Prolonged sleep deprivation and irregular hours or timing of sleep are bound to affect your efficiency in the long run.

One should try sticking to a definite sleeping and waking time.

Create a Study Group:

Working in groups can help students when they’re struggling to understand a concept and can enable them to complete assignments more quickly than when working alone.

Keep groups small and structured to ensure the maximum benefit to participants and reduce distractions.

Plan specific time for studying:

Study time is whenever you are accomplishing something related to schoolwork.

It very well may finish allotted perusing, taking a shot at a paper or venture, or concentrate for a test.

Correct Posture:

Study with your back straight as it helps you get the maximum retention of what you have studied.

Meals and eating habits:

Try having proper meals at regular times.

Simply sitting down to study has little value.

You should be clear about what you need to achieve during your study times.

Take effective notes:

The retention of knowledge becomes really easy if you take effective notes.

The study from a good book or two, take your own notes.

Mention the important points in bullets.

Read them again and again.

Exercise daily:

Start your day with at least 20 minutes of light to an intense workout.

Choose anything out of a brisk walk, skipping a rope, gym, yoga, Zumba etc. as per your convenience and interest.

These activities help you avoid unnecessary backaches, neck sprains, and headaches.

Apart from fitness, exercise has been proven to help you build a positive outlook towards studies, work and life in general.

All in all, be determined and disciplined. By adopting the above study habits, you will not only reach your study goals but also enjoy the process.

Blended Learning

In our country due to the large population, the formal school's system is not able to provide equal educational opportunities to all, so blended learning will be a good option as it will make the area of educational opportunities wider and education will be able to reach to more children.

The educational system at present is in a transition stage. To meet the challenges of expansion and for catering individuals need it is trying to adopt new technologies and exploring new paths to reach the goal of quality educational opportunities for all.

What is Blended Learning

Today, the term ‘blended learning’ has evolved to mean the integration of classroom learning with online or e-learning. Blended courses (also known as hybrid or mixed-mode courses) are classes where a portion of the traditional face-to-face instruction is replaced by web-based online learning.

Blended learning is an innovative concept that embraces the advantages of both traditional teaching in the classroom and ICT supported learning including both offline learning and online learning.

Face-to-face presentations, visual material, paper-based assessments, online research and group activities have been used for classroom teaching for many decades. More recently mobile technologies have expanded opportunities for learning. Blended learning is really no more than a combination of all of these approaches.

A growing number of schools are piloting or implementing blended learning programs nowadays. However, many teachers are still unfamiliar with the different aspects of this blended learning model of studies.

Why Blended Learning Approach is adopting

The traditional approach has its own benefits but it is not free from deficiencies. It has the following shortcomings:

The traditional model of teaching is failing to meet the individual needs of all the students in the class basically due to improper pupil teacher ratio.

It is not adapting itself to meet the challenge of teaching physically challenges students.

Teachers are not trained for the integrated classroom.

The traditional model of teaching is not fit to meet the challenges put forward by the irregular students as attendance are must and evaluation the system depends on the annual examination. If students fail to take the examination his whole year is a waste, due to rigidity, the irregular students are in a way excluded from the mainstream of the school system.

School is not able to reach every child and so education for all is still a far-sighted goal.

Children from deprived groups, from the areas that are geographically isolated and medically unfit students are not able to gain benefit from this formal traditional mode of teaching.

The traditional model of teaching, students have to suffer due to dearth of teachers, their learning has many ambiguities due to inefficient teachers.

In the traditional model of teaching the course is not regularly revised, books are not updated and teachers are not interested in upgrading their knowledge and professional skills, the result is that our students are not well prepared to meet the demands of the modern market and professions.

To make their knowledge correlate with the present technological advancement and globalization, to minimize the teaching errors, to improve the quality, to increase students exposure ICT supported the teaching-learning process is a good option.

Advantages of blended learning

Blended learning is more effective than purely face-to-face or purely online classes.

Blended learning courses are dynamic by their very nature.

Blended learning can increase access and flexibility for learners, increase level of active learning, and achieve better student experiences and outcomes.

As part of learning is done through ICT, online or offline mode so teachers and students get more time in the classroom for creative and cooperative exercise.

Blended learning methods can also result in high levels of student achievement more effective than face-to-face learning.

It provides more scope for communication. The communication cycle is completed in blended learning which is not possible if we follow only traditional approach.

Students become more techno-savvy and they gain enhanced digital fluency.

By using a combination of digital instruction and one-on-one face time, students can work on their own with new concepts which free teachers up to circulate and support individual students who may need individualized attention.

It updates the course content and so gives a new life to an established course.

Blended Learning also has the potential to reduce educational expenses, and lower costs by putting classrooms in the online space and it essentially replaces pricey textbooks with electronic devices.

The model of blended learning emphasizes bringing together online and face-to-face classroom components. In addition, a blended delivery system allows students to learn and access material in a variety of modes which is an important feature since students often have very different learning styles.

In fact, research indicates that blended learning increases students’ chances of meeting course outcomes compared with fully online and even fully face-to-face courses, by decreasing dropout rates, increasing test scores and increasing motivation on the part of students.

Blended Learning allows for personalized education, replacing the model where a teacher stands in front of the classroom and everyone is expected to stay at the same pace. It allows students to work at their own pace, making sure they fully understand new concepts before moving on.

A classroom environment that incorporates Blended learning naturally requires learners to demonstrate more autonomy, self-regulation, and independence in order to succeed.

For faculty, blended courses can be a method to infuse new engagement opportunities into established courses or, for some, provide a transitional opportunity between fully face-to-face and fully online instruction

To conclude it can be said that blended learning is to some extent is the solution to problems prevailing in our educational system. If implemented in a well-planned, organised way with the right type of attitudes it can become the future of our educational system. It is in our own benefit that steps for adapting blended learning are soon initiated.

What makes a good teacher? What are the most positive aspects of the teachers’ evaluation? How can we decide whether somebody is a high-quality teacher or not?

Good teachers are made, not born. (There is no gene for good teaching !)

The purpose of this article is to understand the lists of characteristics of good teachers by analysing the beliefs of the students, parents, other teachers at school. Students’ ideas are always important to us in assessing how any teacher is good in all aspect. If you as a teacher know the students’ viewpoint, then you can use this information in self-assessment and professional development.

The researcher believed the professional knowledge, high level of ethics, honesty, confidence, consistency, fairness, self-command and optimism made the good teacher.

After surveying among thousands of students, the researchers drew the result that the most respected teachers are joyful, patient, friendly, understanding, objective and fair in evaluating students’ performances.

Lists of characteristics describing a good teacher can be divided into two groups.

> First group concentrates on the teacher’s personality characteristics and qualities.

> Second group indicates the teachers’ abilities, skills and professional skill, abilities and capabilities etc.

The students’, the parents’, the teachers’, the teacher students’ or the school principals’ opinion is different concerning what makes a good teacher. Moreover, students’ opinion varies and were influenced by their age, self-concept, motivation and social background. This implies that this issue is very complex.

Therefore the only duty of the teacher in both cases is to remove all obstructions from the way.

A good teacher can make a world of difference in a student's life, impacting everything from their classroom learning to their longterm success. If you're considering a career in education, it's important to explore the qualities of a good teacher.

Qualities of Good Teacher

A good teacher must develop the students’ personality in good terms and his or her student's school results are very good.

A good teacher must be adaptive in teaching students with different needs or student who need special attention during studies.

A good teacher must be able to refresh his professional knowledge and skills from time to time.

A good teacher must be able to keep discipline among the students.

A good teacher must be punctual on his tutorings and should solve queries of a student successfully.

A good teacher should be on good terms with his colleagues and is always willing to take up extra duties with pleasure.

A good teacher should always focus on teaching well, wide-scale knowledge.

Setting a good example for the students remained very important.

A good teacher is always able to set a good example for student and find the balance between his or her communication and activating students in a particular situation by being restrictive.

A good teacher is always able to energize students to develop the students’ intellectual, moral, artistic attitudes and social responsibility by being flexible and lively.

All teachers’ roles and personality traits are changing depending on the socio-economical changes.

A good teacher is always energetic, enthusiastic, extrovert, optimistic, spontaneous and adaptive.

An effective teacher makes students involved in active learning process via debates, discussions, research, writing essays, assessment, experiments, making models or products in the form of searching for information, giving information and practice.

A good teacher always sets high standards in the classroom and gives constant feedback on the students’ development, plans the learning environment consciously, makes parents involved in their children’s learning process and cooperates with his or her colleagues and the staff.

A good teacher needs to have some basic personal characteristics: unconditional acceptance, self-acceptance, empathy, full attention to the student, emotional sensitivity, and credibility as well. No matter how effective you are as a teacher, you can become a better teacher.

One of the key skills needed to be a good teacher is a dedication to continued education and a love of learning.

A willingness to share knowledge and experiences with a student is one of the most important qualities of a good teacher.

Being able to engage students with humour, creative lessons and a strong classroom presence is an important part of what makes someone a good teacher.

क्या आपने कभी सोचा है की आजकल के बच्चों क्या होता जा रहा है। हर दिन हमें सुनने को मिलता है अख़बार में या फिर टेलीविज़न में देखते है की किस तरह यंग स्टूडेंट्स और बच्चे ड्रग्स जैसे प्रवित्ति में लिप्त है और यही नहीं आजकल बच्चो में सयम बिलकुल भी नहीं है तोड़ा सा भी नहीं। कई बार ड्रग्स लेने की वजह से बच्चे आपने मानसिक संतुलन खो बैठते है और गुस्से में आ के सामने वाले इंसान का खून भी करने में भी कतराते नहीं है।

इन सब हालत के लिए हम अब किस को दोष दे - क्या इसके लिए माँ बाप जिम्मेदार है या हमारा समाज ?।

इस सन्दर्भ में हम किसी एक को दोष नहीं दे सकते है।

इस संकट से बचने के लिए हम सब को मिलकर इस परेशनी के कारण को समझना पड़ेगा। जह तक मेरा बिचार कहता है की इस परेशानी का एक ही हल है की हमे बच्चो के अच्छे चरित्र बनाने में ज्यादा ध्यान देना चाहिए।

चरित्र कोई ऐसा चीज़ नहीं है जिस के साथ कोई इंसान जन्म लेता है। आपका कोई इस पे जन्मसिद्ध अधिकार नहीं है। जिस क्षण एक बच्चा जन्म लेता है, उस क्षण से ही उसके चरित्र को बनने में कई सारे फैक्टर होते है। आज के इस वक़्त में हमारी मीडिया सब से ज्यादा हमारे बच्चे को चरित्र को प्रभाबित करता है। आजकल कि मीडिया बहुत ज्यादा शक्तिशाली है की वह किसी भी इंसान के चरित्र को बना भी सकता है और बिगाड़ भी सकता है। अगर बच्चे बहुत ज्यादा टेलीविज़न और आपत्ति जनक मीडिया की चीज़ो को देखेंगे तो वह उनके बिचार को बहुत नुकसान करेगा ।

मूल्य कभी नहीं सिखाया जाता है वह बच्चे को सिखाया जाता है। करैक्टर एजुकेशन की शुरआत हमेंशा घर से ही होती है जहा हमारे माँ बाप पुरजोश कोशिश करते है हमें अच्छी शिक्षा देने के लिए और अच्छा आचरण सीखने के लिए। मूल्य कभी नहीं सिखाया जाता है वह बच्चे को सिखाया जाता है। करैक्टर एजुकेशन की शुरआत हमेंशा घर से ही होती है जहा हमारे माँ बाप पुरजोश कोशिश करते है हमें अच्छी शिक्षा देने के लिए और अच्छा आचरण सीखने के लिए। आज इस करैक्टर एजुकेशन में बहुत ज्यादा ध्यान दिया जा रहा है। इसलिए आज हर एक स्कूल में चरित्र शिक्षा (करैक्टर एजुकेशन) को अपने पाठ्यक्रम में सम्मिलित किया है।

How to help a slow learner or weak student

To teach a child who is not taking interest in studies is a really big problem and we need to find out better ways to do that. Begin by changing our mindset from a fixed to a growth mindset we can easily help these students to achieve their goal. I personally advise every parents and teacher to stop calling him/her a weak student but more importantly, stop thinking of him or her as a weak student. Sometimes children have learning disabilities or behaviour problems and some just hate the subject because of negative learning experiences.

Slow Learner or Weak Students

The student commonly called a slow learner or weak in studies is one who cannot learn at an average rate from the instructional resources, texts, workbooks, and learning materials that are designed for the majority of students in the classroom.

The factor contributing to slow learning in students

Many of these children live in community conditions that have adversely impacted their learning in schools. Some of these conditions include the family’s loss of meaningful employment, the infestation of illegal drugs, and an increase in single-parent households. Children subjected to these living conditions have a greater engage in inappropriate behaviour in the classroom.

Academic achievement was positively correlated with a strategic learning approach and negatively correlated with an apathetic learning approach.

It might be difficult to distinguish students with lack of motivation from those with lack of knowledge. While no single technique or set of techniques is sufficient for teaching the slow learner, the suggestions that follow are a starting point for developing instructional strategies that specifically address the learning needs of the slow learner. So it is our moral responsibility to use successful methodological techniques in order to fill the gap between what weak students know and how to deal with them.

However, as per my personal experience, both teacher and parents play an important role in the life of a student but they need to follow different strategies to help slow learner or weak student.

Strategies to be followed by the teacher to help slow learner or weak student

Succeeding with slow learners or weak students is all about timing- If we are able to catch them and give them all that she or he can when they are still young, then they will be able to close their gaps. Otherwise, by the time these weak students reach High School, they are already so demotivated to learn, they have little or no faith in their ability to succeed or in the teacher’s ability to teach them.

Early help can make a difference- If students receive extra support from a teacher or parents in an early stage as soon as problems are recognized then it is easier for the weak learner to regain confidence and lose anxiety. When students are supported in order to find their best style and strategy to learn, it is possible for them to follow their ordinary class again.

As teachers, it is essential that we make the process of providing feedback with a positive, or at least a neutral, learning experience for the student- Classrooms are full of diverse learners. Some students need to be nudged to achieve at a higher level and other needs to be handled very gently so as not to discourage learning and damage self-esteem. A balance between not wanting to hurt a student’s feelings and providing proper encouragement is essential.

Weaker kids need lots of success-oriented activities- The trick is to teach the material subconsciously without them realizing they are being taught.

Teaching methods is one of the strategies for improving students’ performance- Research evidence further shows that teachers who make instructional choices are effective in their classroom and help the weaker student to improve their performance in studies and overall aspect. The instructional strategy was shown to include- Visual and graphic depictions of problems, Systematic and explicit instruction, Student think-aloud, Use of structured peer-assisted learning activities involving heterogeneous ability groupings, Formative assessment data provided to teachers and Formative assessment data provided directly to students.

Remedial Teaching- This is an alternate approach for the regular classroom teacher in instructing the slow learner or weak students. Remedial teaching is the use of activities, techniques and practices to eliminate weaknesses or deficiencies that the slow learner is known to have. For example deficiencies in basic math skills are reduced or eliminated by re-teaching the content that was not learned earlier.

Compensatory Teaching- Compensatory teaching is an instructional approach that alters the presentation of content to circumvent a student’s fundamental weakness or deficiency. Compensatory teaching recognizes content, transmits through alternate modalities (pictures versus words), and supplements it with additional learning resources and activities (learning centres and simulations, group discussions and co-operative learning). This may involve modifying an instructional technique by including a visual representation of content, by using more flexible instructional presentations (films, pictures, illustrations), or by shifting to alternate instructional formats (self-paced texts, simulations, experience-oriented workbooks).

Develop Lessons that Incorporate Students’ Interests, Needs, and Experiences - This helps address the short attention spans of slow learners.

Find out what the child is interested in- Young children are interested in many different things. Studies have shown that children’s participation in activities that are interesting to them is filled with powerful learning opportunities, including opportunities to build language and communication skills.

Encourage Oral Expression Instead of Written Reports

Keep a look at their patterns of learning- See, which words they speak well and which they do not. What they are confident of and what they are not? Which mathematical concepts are clear and what is not. If they do not want to study at all, use colours, activities, rewards etc but do not use fear.

To discover the weak points of students- All we need to do is to observe them closely. Look at them when we are teaching them and try to figure it out - Are they sleeping, bored or having a problem focusing on your lessons? Do they look confused? Are they playing mobile games or sleeping? After each lesson, simplify and summarize the main points (if possible), and ask questions as a quiz to determine how much they have learned.

Strategies to be followed by the parents to help their child

Practice positive self-talk with them.

Teach them how to set and achieve goals.

Resist comparing them to others.

Make the child confident as we all know confidence is vitally important to a child’s future happiness, health, and success. Confident children are better equipped to deal with peer pressure, responsibility, frustrations, challenges, and both positive and negative emotions. This thing has an effect on their learning capabilities.

Celebrate each success that they get and create lesson plans that are a balance of right and left brain.

Be with the child and become friendly- Children tend to do things when their friends ask them. Bring the child in confidence.

Closely monitor the environment around the child whether it is befitting for him/ her? Are the parents behaving in an ideal way? Is the child exposed to the right kind of learning environment? Children tend to copy their elders a lot. This thing has a huge effect on their mental growth.

Cater to him/her with extra-attention and understand what is the hindrance that prevents him/her from succeeding. No child would open up in the beginning. Get more close to the child to develop an emotional attachment with him/her. But at the same time make sure that you do not intrude into his/her personal space.

Online learning is the newest and most popular form of distance education today. Within the past decade, it has had a major impact on the education system and it is only increasing day by day.

In this blog, we will explore what the experience of online learning is like for students and how it has changed the role of the teacher in online teaching. The current challenges facing traditional colleges and universities like providing higher tuition classes, cuts in the budget, and shortage of courses it cause many students to search for alternatives mode of learning.

The development of online courses in higher education doesn’t happen overnight. With the development of online education over time, its definition has been evolved.

Lets us first understand what is an online learning

Online learning is a type of education that takes place over the Internet which often referred to as “e-learning”. However, as per my understanding of the education system, we can also say online learning is just one type of “distance learning”. Distance learning is the umbrella term for any learning that takes place across distance and not in a traditional classroom. In India, distance learning has a long history and there are several types available today, including:

Various type of Correspondence Courses: Conducted through regular mail (Post) with little interaction.

Telecourses: Where the content is delivered via radio or television broadcast.

CD-ROM Courses: Where the student interacts with static computer content.

Mobile Learning: It is also one of the type of distance education which is conducted by means of devices such as cellular phones, PDAs and digital audio players (iPods, MP3 players).

Online Learning: Internet-based courses.

Benefits of online teaching and learning

Online distance learning meets the needs of students who cannot or you can say not prefer to participate in the traditional classroom environment. These students include those who are unable to attend traditional classes and who cannot find a particular class at their chosen universities, those students who live in remote locations, those who work full-time and can only study after work, and those who simply prefer to learn independently.

The minimum requirement for any students who want to take an online course should have access to a computer, the Internet, and the motivation to succeed in a non-traditional classroom.

Online courses provide an excellent method of course delivery unbound by time or location allowing for accessibility to instruction at any time from anywhere. students find the online environment a convenient way to fit education into their busy lives. The ability to access a course from any computer with Internet access, 24 hours a day, seven days a week is a tremendous incentive for many of today’s students.

Students can take more time to think and reflect before communicating; shy students tend to thrive online

Interaction

Increased student-to-teacher and student-to-student interaction and discussion; a more student-centred learning environment; less passive listening and more active learning; a greater sense of connectedness, synergy.

Flexibility

Students have the freedom to choose courses because they aren't tied down to a fixed schedule. Most students who choose online learning tend to have other commitments and prefer this mode of learning as it gives them power over how they will delegate their time towards their different works.

Outreach

Give students options; reach new student; appeal to current students thus increasing enrollments.

Savings

Accommodate more students; increased student satisfaction results in higher retention and fewer repeats.

Maximize Physical Resources

Lessen demand on limited campus infrastructure; decrease congestion on campus and parking lots.

Improved Administration

Time to examine student work more thoroughly; ability to document and record online interactions; ability to manage to grade online.

Innovative Teaching

Student-centred approaches; increased variety and creativity of learning activities; address different learning styles; changes and improvements can translate to on-ground courses as well.

The teacher should be able to accept the value of online learning method as equal to the traditional model of teaching. If a teacher feels the only way that true learning can take place is through the traditional means of educating in a classroom, then the person is generally not a good fit for the online paradigm.

A lot of teachers mistakenly assume that they'll feel isolated from their online
students. To their surprise, most teachers find that online learning and teaching actually provide a high degree of personal contact.

यह सच नहीं है कि आपके पास पढ़ाई के लिए आत्मविश्वास और याद रखने की क्षमता नहीं है। आपको बस उन ताकत को पहचानना होगा और इसे अपने लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ बनाना होगा।

स्मार्ट तरीके से पढ़ाई करें।

बहुत से छात्र जो परीक्षाओं में खराब प्रदर्शन करते हैं, उनकी एक आम शिकायत है: 'मैं अभी बहुत अध्ययन करता हूँ और मुझे अच्छे ग्रेड नहीं मिलते हैं'। मुख्य कारण ज्यादातर समय एकाग्रता और ध्यान की कमी है। यहां तक कि अगर आप अपने पाठ को पढ़ने में घंटों बिताते हैं तो भी परिणाम कुछ नहीं होगा। बिल्कुल कुछ भी आपके दिमाग में नहीं जाएगा।

छात्र की पहली अच्छी आदत

आपको अपनी लर्निंग स्टाइल को जानना चाहिए और इसे बेहतर तरीके से विकसित करना चाहिए। एक बार आपने यह जान लिया कि आपके लिए कौन सी शैली सीखने का सबसे अच्छा काम करती है। यह आपको यह जानने में मदद करेगा कि अध्ययन कैसे करना है, कहाँ अध्ययन करना है, कब अध्ययन करना है और आपके अध्ययन से जुड़ी अन्य महत्वपूर्ण बातें। जैसे कि क्या अध्ययन करना है और कौन सी चीजें आपको विचलित कर सकती हैं जब आप अध्ययन करने का प्रयास कर रहे हों।
