Being Like a Rubber Band

Being stretched can turn out to be very positive.

Imagine a rubber band. You hold one end of the band in one hand while stretching the opposite end of with your other hand. The more you stretch it, the more the rubber band wants us to let go it so it can come back to it's original position. In just wants to return to its place of comfort.

Yet if we continue stretching it, that rubber band will eventually grow into a new size. When we let go of it now, it will come back some, but not the entire distance. In essence, it has developed a new dimension.

Now imagine that you dip this original rubber band into hot wax, then quickly remove it. You then allow the wax to dry. At this point, if you repeat the stretching exercise you'll notice that as you extend the rubber band the wax caked around it cracks and crumbles, then falls off.

The same dynamic occurs with humans. We don't want to get stretched, because it will involve letting go of some external layers. We are comfortable within those layers, and they may even seem to be protecting us. Yet, in fact, they are getting in the way of the new, evolving being who we already are on the inside. They are an impediment to our growth.

Also like that rubber band, we must temporarily experience being uncomfortable when we stretch and grow. In the process of becoming the butterfly we were metaphorically meant to be, we are outgrowing a cocoon. The butterfly doesn't snip off its wings and re-enter the cocoon. It knows of no such thing. But we, as human beings, have a tendency to snip our own new-grown wings so we can retreat to the cocoon that represents our old zone of comfort. Unfortunately, the zone of comfort is seldom the territory of fulfillment. The butterfly has no choice. The human has an ability to make such choice.

The next time you are feeling stretched and uncomfortable, pat yourself on the back and say "Good for me. I must be growing!" In fact, if you are not stretching, growing, and evolving, then you are probably too attached to being comfortable.

The home based business industry brings us opportunities to grow and stretch consistently. Every day look at your challenges as opportunities. The question you may be asking is "How can I do that?"

The real question to ask is not "Can I?", It's "Will I?"

How "willing" are you? or better yet "What are the reasons why you may want to allow willingness into your life and therefore your business?"

Growing up we had an old wooden ball goal in our back yard. We played so much the grass was gone and in its place was hard packed dirt. I have four sisters and basketball was a big part of who we all were. We learned many lessons in that backyard with that ole ball goal.

My mother played in high school and her team went to state and WON! My sisters and I have all played at some point in time in our lives. Presently, my youngest son is playing. As I chauffeur him to practice and cheer him on at games, it takes me back to my days of being in the back yard learning to play and being out on the court.

My coach used to tell us we could win a game with free throws that is if we made the goal. Which was easier said than done sometimes (especially if you didn’t practice). It’s the same with business, we have an opportunity to make a difference in our lives but how are we going to win. I will tell you, we will win by practice and lots of it.

I remember being in that back yard learning to shoot that ball and as much as I hate to admit it, I would do granny shots. But with the help of my older sister and many, many hours of practice I learned how to shoot the basketball properly and better yet I managed to get good enough to rip that net. Swoosh!

We all have to start somewhere, and if it means doing granny shots to get started then do what you must do. Business is no different. You are not going to be a success overnight. It often takes many years to build up a successful organization, but what are you doing to insure that you win?

Are you reading and learning about your business? Are you practicing on your phone skills? Or how about trying to improve your self? We all know network marketing is a journey about self-development. Are you aiming to win? Or have you become complacent in your business?

To be successful and be on top you have to push yourself beyond your comfort zone. Often times if is very uncomfortable and at those times if you don’t push through you will not grow.

Today, I want you to get on that free throw line. Get ready….Aim for your Goals….and Shoot to WIN!

Ways to Promote Your Business

Hold a local area community Block Party at your home or local community center! Families are always looking for something to do during the nice weather seasons! Optional: Attend your neighborhood block party and set up a table with your product offerings or samples. Get out there in your community and get your business seen!

Get your business listed in your cities telephone book yellow pages! Alot of them also have a coupon section too! You can take this phone book advertising one step further by finding out what company makes the plastic vinyl phone book covers which have local business ads on them and get your business added to it!

Get your business information printed up on pencils and hand them out to local colleges and technical schools for them to hand out to their adult students! This keeps your business information in front of them! (Make sure you only donate them to schools with adult students).

Get a vehicle banner made for your automobile. I recommend the vinyl window clings or vinyl cling ones that stick to your automobile but don’t scratch or remove the paint. You can easily remove them when washing your vehicle!

If your city has a travel guide that tourists request, contact that business and find out how you can advertise in it too!

WHEN LEADERSHIP FINDS YOU

Forty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. stirred the passion
and imagination of Americans with his dream of equality for all
people.  Reflecting on the life of Dr. King, I am reminded that
history has demonstrated that leaders often emerge during periods
of great change.  For every major turning point in American
history, great leaders assumed the mantle of leadership: Abraham
Lincoln, Franklin Roosevelt, and Harry Truman all come to mind.

What is interesting is that usually great men and women don't go
looking for leadership.  Instead, leadership finds them.  When
Dr. King received the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize, he said, "History
has thrust me into this position.  I neither started the protest,
nor suggested it.  I simply responded to the call of the people."
King's words remind me of Plato's, "Only those who do not seek
power are qualified to hold it."

It's as if you want it, you shouldn't have it.  Instead, if you
commit to other things, leadership will come.  What do people who
become great leaders commit themselves to that lead them to
greatness?  Here are four key commitments:

1. They commit themselves to growth.

King was a lifelong learner.  "I question and soul-search
constantly to be as certain as I can that I am fulfilling the
true meaning of my work, maintaining my sense of purpose, holding
fast to my ideals, and that I am guiding my people in the right
direction."

Coretta Scott King confirms this by saying that King, "Worked so
hard and studied constantly--long after he became a world
figure."

2. They commit themselves to a larger than life vision.

King saw the civil rights movement as the continuation "of that
noble journey toward the goals reflected in the Declaration of
Independence, the Preamble to the Constitution, the Constitution
itself, the Bill of Rights, and the Thirteenth, Fourteenth,
Fifteenth, and Nineteenth Amendments to the Constitution."  Dr.
King portrayed the movement as not simply a conflict between
white people and black people, but a struggle between "justice
and injustice."

3. They commit themselves to action.

Dr. King always advocated specific and practical initiatives.
Great leaders point to the problem and then clearly give several
solutions.  He would ask how is it that we can have all the great
technology in America and yet cannot make the Constitution work
at a luncheonette in a southern town.

"What is needed," he said, "is a strategy for change, a tactical
program that will bring the Negro into the mainstream of American
life as quickly as possible.  When evil men plot, good men must
plan.  When evil men burn and bomb, good men must build and
bind."

4. They commit themselves to leaving a legacy.

King said he wouldn't "have any money to leave behind" but wanted
"to leave a committed life behind."  This is best demonstrated in
that he didn't want "a long funeral," not even "a eulogy of more
than one or two minutes."  He wanted no mention of his Nobel
Peace Prize or other awards he had received.  Instead, "I'd like
somebody to mention that Martin Luther King, Jr. tried to give
his life serving others.  Say that I was a drum major for
justice, a drum major for peace, a drum major for righteousness."

Dr. King was right for the moment.  He showed the nation a better
way.  Millions of us live with hope of an even greater future as
we remember his dream of when "little black boys and black girls
will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls
and walk together as sisters and brothers."

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. didn't look to become a leader.
Leadership found him, and because of his commitment, he was able
to answer leadership's calling.  That is a great lesson for all
of us to learn.  When leadership finds us, will we be the kind of
people who can step up and lead?  What we commit to now will be
the determining factor.
