Jim Thome infielder and designated hitter of the Chicago White Sox has been traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Also traded by the White Sox is Jose Contreras a right-handed pitcher to the Colorado Rockies, both trades were announced late Monday.

Thome was traded for Dodger infielder Justin Fuller and are sending cash to LA that will presumably cover at least part of Thome's salary. The 24-year-old Fuller is hitting .254 with four home runs and 17 RBI in 56 games this season with Class A Inland Empire of the California League.

Thome now 39-years-old is hitting .252 with 23 home runs and 74 RBI in 106 games.

In exchange for Contreras and cash, the Sox got 24-year-old right-handed pitcher Brandon Hynick from Colorado. Hynick is 10-9 with a 3.83 ERA and two complete games in 26 starts this season with Class AAA Colorado Springs.

The 37-year-old Contreras is 5-13 with a 5.42 ERA and 89 strikeouts in 21 starts this season. He has seven major-league seasons with the Yankees and White Sox.

Telling you to "Free your feet," Vibram has introduced a shoe that embraces all your distal digits, the FiveFingers, named a "Best Invention of 2007" by TIME. With individual slots for each toe, like a glove for your hand, the shoe is reportedly the closest thing to going barefoot. While they can be used for running (if they will send me a size 11, I'll tell you how that works out), the neoprene lining makes them work for "sailing, kayaking, surfing, windsurfing, kiteboarding and flats fishing." I do not know of socks made other than Injinji that could be worn with this shoe, but I wear Injinji's often while running or hiking anyway; they are excellent socks and should work well with this shoe.

Even Cruch Gear has come around to the FiveFingers. Admitting his first impression was the "Five Fingers of Suck," writer John Biggs now writes, "Friends, I’m here to tell you I was wrong. And I’m sorry."

So, folks at Vibram, when you read this send me a pair and I'll do a full review. If I do not see a box on my doorstep in a couple of weeks, maybe I'll get a pair for Christmas. If I can wait that long...

Tropical Storm Danny is On Its Way!

Forecasters are saying that Tropical Storm Danny which has formed near the Dominican Repuplic in the Atlantic could pose a threat to our Eastern coasts of the US as it moves north.

Today, Wednesday August 26th, 2009, NOAH (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) announced that Danny was approximately 390 west of Nassau in the Bahamas and 735 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Presently the maximum sustained winds are at 45 mph and could make landfall as a Category 1 hurricane (winds exceeding 75 mph) late Saturday or early Sunday.

AccuWeather said tropical-storm-force winds could reach North Carolina's Outer Banks Friday, and it warned of dangerous rip currents as the storm moves north.

Danny is expected to cause storm total rainfall of 2 to 3 inches, with maximum amounts of 4 inches over the central and northwestern Bahamas. Total rainfall of 1 to 2 inches is expected over the southeastern Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands," the hurricane center said.

Nugatory

Why is everyone currently looking up the definition for "nugatory" on the internet today? I can't figure it out because according to the sources I found it means "of little or no importance". So, what's so important about this word and its origin?

The word "nugatory" etymology: latin nugatorius, from nugari to trifle, from nugae trifles and it originated some time from 1595-1605.

As far as I can tell you can't find a definition on wikipedia because this is what came back when I searched the word: "You may create the page "Nugatory", but consider checking the search results below to see whether it is already covered".

I did however find some other definitions such as: of no real value; trifling; worthless, of no force or effect; ineffective; futile; vain and not valid. I also found a few synonyms such as trivial, insignificant, frivolous, useless, inoperative.

I still can't figure out what the big deal is unless online marketers are using it to market their wares because of its popularity.

Tropical Storm Claudette (continued)

Early Monday moring Tropical Storm Claudette hit Florid's panhandle, striking the eastern end of Santa Rosa Island off Fort Walton Beach. The outer bands of the storm pounded the area with heavy rains, prompting warnings that some coastal areas could receive localized flooding.

Claudette's expected path was to move through Florida's panhandle into southern Alabama, then push into northeastern Mississippi. It was moving at about 12 mph and carrying winds of about 40 mph.

Isolated tornadoes and storm surges are also possible across portions of North Florida.

Hurricane Guillermo has lost some of its punch and was downgraded to a tropical storm, its center was about 815 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii, moving on a west-northwesterly track at about 15 mph with winds of about 70 mph.

Tropical Storm Claudette!

At 12:15 p.m. today the National Weather Service Hurricane Center upgraded Tropical Depression 4 to Tropical Storm Claudette.

Here's the tropical storm map for "Claudette" from NOAH (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association) taken at 1:00 p.m. today.

The storm is about 75 miles south/southeast of Apalachicola moving northwest at about 14-15 mph and could make landfall this evening hopefully at low tide. Coastal areas should expect a sea level rise of 3 to 5 feet.

Winds are extending up to 70 miles from the center of the storm. The area from the Alabama/Florida border east to the Suwannee River is under a tropical storm warning. Three to five inches of rainfall with as much as 10 inches is expected in some areas.

The most important thing for citizens to do right now is to monitor the storm, secure items in the yard and be prepared with flashlights, battery powered radios and water reserves. Try not to do to much driving around any flooded areas and stay closer to home as conditions worsen.
