What’s a Ceilidh?

If you’ve never been to a Ceilidh before, you’re in for a treat!

A Ceilidh (pronounced kay-lee) is a traditional Scottish social gathering featuring lively music, group dancing and plenty of laughter.

The best part? You don’t need to know a single dance!

Our fantastic live band, Nedron’s Jig, comes complete with a caller, who talks everyone through the steps before and during each dance.

Of course, knowing what you’re supposed to be doing and actually ending up in the right place are two very different things!

Expect a little confusion, plenty of laughter and some wonderfully organised chaos along the way.

Whether you’re a regular at Learn To Dance, a complete beginner or simply looking for a fun night out with friends, our Ceilidh is for you.

There’s no need for any previous dance experience – just bring your enthusiasm, some comfortable dancing shoes and a sense of humour!

With live music creating a fantastic atmosphere, it’s a brilliant opportunity to get moving, meet people and enjoy something a little different.

We’re delighted to be introducing two new daytime classes at Learn To Dance in Burnham — Sequence Dancing on Mondays and Beginner Line Dancing on Wednesdays!

Both classes are designed to be welcoming, sociable and enjoyable, whether you’re learning something completely new or brushing up on dances you already know.

Sequence Dancing – Learn Step-by-Step

Mondays, 12.30pm–1.15pm | £10 per class (class packages available)

Starting Monday 2nd November 2026

Ever wanted to learn some of the popular sequence dances you see at tea dances and social events?

Our new Sequence Dancing class will break down the routines step by step, starting with classics such as the Catherine Waltz, Rumba One and Saunter Together.

We’ll also take requests and introduce other popular dances along the way.

Come with a partner or on your own. Where numbers allow, our teachers and assistants will help with partnering.

And with our weekly Tea Dance starting at 1.30pm, it’s an ideal opportunity to put your new steps into practice!

Beginner Line Dancing

Wednesdays, 11.30am–12.15pm | £7 per class (class packages available)

Starting Wednesday 4th November 2026

No partner? No problem!

Our new Beginner Line Dancing classes are perfect for anyone who fancies trying something different.

We’ll be learning a variety of routines, breaking down the steps at a comfortable pace and dancing to a mixture of music — not just country and western!

No previous dance experience is needed, and there’s certainly no requirement to arrive wearing cowboy boots!

Already attending our FitSteps Dance Fitness classes? Your existing Solo Classes passes can also be used for Line Dancing.

More Reasons to Dance During the Day!

Both classes fit neatly into our existing daytime timetable.

On Mondays, Sequence Dancing leads straight into our popular afternoon Tea Dance.

And on Wednesdays, Line Dancing sits between FitSteps at 10.30am and Beginner Ballroom & Latin at 12.30pm.

So whether you’d like to try one class or make a morning or afternoon of it, there’s plenty to choose from.

Both classes take place at our dedicated dance studio in Burnham, with free on-site parking.

You’ll be pleased to know that all toilets are now available, though there will still be some work being completed over the course of this week.

Last weekend saw a number of our students trying competitive dancing for the first time. Given that we had less than two months of preparation time we were really happy with how everyone performed, and we look forward to seeing what progress they can make before the next comp in May. We’ll have a full update, along with some photos/videos up soon.

There’s no FitSteps class this week, all other classes are running as normal this week.

Finally our Glastonbury dance break is now available to book, and you can save £15pp if you book before 30th November.

Argentine Tango is about the communication between yourself and your partner. Pay attention to where both of your body weights are and listen for when each move has been completed.

Temporary Toilets

The toilet refurbishments are almost complete we’re told, and all toilets are now back in use.

There may still be some work being completed this week but otherwise all should be available for use.

Hopefully the footballers will treat them with respect and we will have nice clean toilets for years to come.

A Fantastic First Qualifier for Team Learn To Dance!

Last Sunday saw a group of Learn To Dance students take part in the NATD Medallist of the Year qualifier in Reading — and for what was essentially our first proper “dry run” at offering competition dancing, we couldn’t have been happier with how it went.

With less than two months to prepare, our students competed across a range of ages and grades in Ballroom and Latin. We had category wins, podium places and some tougher results too, but every single student gained valuable competition experience and represented Learn To Dance brilliantly.

Best of all, every one of our competitors qualified for the NATD Medallist of the Year Grand Finals in Blackpool next July! A huge congratulations to everyone who danced, and thank you to all the students who came along to watch and support. We’ll be sharing a full write-up, results, photos and videos later this week.

We’re heading back to Somerset in March 2027 for our next Glastonbury Dance Weekend — two nights of dancing, good food, great company and, this time, a focus on Argentine Tango.

Our dance weekends are always designed to be relaxed and sociable rather than an intensive dance course. There is plenty of dancing, but also plenty of time to enjoy the hotel, explore the local area or simply put your feet up between sessions!

This year: Argentine Tango

Our main Saturday workshop will concentrate on Argentine Tango.

As with our previous dance weekends, we’ll run one two-hour workshop that begins with a relatively simple sequence and gradually develops as the session progresses.

There’s no pressure to keep adding more and more material. If you reach a point where you feel you’ve learnt enough, you can simply stop adding the next section and spend the remaining time practising what you already have.

We’ll then have another opportunity on Sunday morning to recap what we’ve covered before heading home.

You certainly don’t need to be an Argentine Tango expert to join us but the workshops are best suited to those with some experience!

Saturday night: Black & Red

Of course, it wouldn’t be a Learn To Dance weekend without a Saturday night theme.

For 2027 we’re going with:

Black & Red

As always, this is intended to add a bit of fun to the evening rather than being a strict dress code.

You can embrace the theme as much — or as little — as you like, although our themed evenings tend to be very popular and it’s always great to see what everyone comes up with!

A rough itinerary

Friday

Check-in from 3pm.

For those able to arrive by around 7pm, we’ll meet in the ballroom for a sparkling welcome before heading down for dinner.

Dinner will be at approximately 7.30pm, followed by dancing from around 9pm–11pm.

Saturday

Our Argentine Tango workshop will run approximately 10.30am–12.30pm.

The afternoon is then yours to enjoy. The hotel is within walking distance of Clarks Village, so there’s also the option of a little outlet shopping — or perhaps simply finding somewhere for lunch and relaxing before the evening.

Dinner will be at approximately 7pm before our Black & Red themed evening and dancing from around 9pm–11pm.

Sunday

We’ll finish the weekend with a recap workshop from approximately 10.30am–12pm, with hotel check-out by 11am.

The timings above are intended as a guide and the final itinerary will be sent to everyone attending nearer the weekend.

How much does it cost?

The weekend costs:

However, if you book and pay in full by 30th November 2026, you’ll receive our £15 Early Bird discount, reducing the price to:

£230 per person

The Early Bird discount is applied automatically when you book before the deadline.

The toilet refurb had a bit of a miscommunication, and the disabled toilet was also ripped out this week! Hopefully by the end of Friday they will have made sure it is available for use again but currently there are only the external portaloos available, so please plan accordingly.

We have until tomorrow night to confirm our final spectator numbers for Sundays dance competition. If you’d like to join us to support our dancers please let us know asap, but we only have 8 tickets left available.

Week 1 of our Pot Luck course went down very well this week. See below for details on what we covered, and how you can join us weekly, or for the rest of the course.

Don’t forget our beginner Salsa course starts this Sunday evening at 6pm.

Finally we’re looking at potentially organising tickets to next year’s International Dance Festival at the Royal Albert Hall on Thursday 7th October 2027. Initially we’re looking for expressions of interest but if we do decide to go ahead we would need to take payment once we’ve purchased the tickets as they don’t do group rates nor holding.

⭐ Antony & Emma’s tip of the week
During the middle of the Salsa basic we generally aren’t closing our feet, it should be a small step past the standing leg. This helps us keep the dance flowing, rather than punctuating.

International Dance Festival

A few students attended the International Dance Festival at the Royal Albert Hall last night and we’ve had interest in running a group visit next year.

The evening would be Thursday 7th October and tickets would be in the region of £65pp.

We would have to purchase the tickets now so full payment would be required to confirm a booking, but initially we need to know how many to purchase so please let us know if you’d like to join us.

The competition takes place in Reading on Sunday 11th October. Tickets cost £19pp and doors open from 9am (first round 9.45am). You have a wristband that permits you to come and go as you please from the competition.

Also the football season has resumed at the Cherry Orchard, so please allow more time for parking if you’re attending during the day on Sundays.

The toilet refurb is in full swing and hopefully it won’t be long before they’re back in operation. Whether it’ll be finished by Friday will remain to be seen but it’ll be worth the wait we’re sure.

Bookings for the competition next week have closed. We have requested a few extra tickets just in case, but we will have to return any unsold ones this week so don’t delay if you missed out on booking.

We have also made a decision on the Wednesday night courses for the run up to Christmas. The course will be a ‘Pot Luck’ course. 10 Weeks. 10 Surprises. Looking at revisiting some of the sequences we have covered on various dance breaks over the last 20 years. More details below.

Whilst Viennese Waltz is [eventually] a continuously rotating dance, we’re actually aiming to take the shortest route, moving ‘through’ our partner rather than trying to go around them.

We’ve been racking our brains trying to work out how best to use the next 10 weeks of Wednesday courses, to avoid having a mid-course break over Christmas.

What we’ve decided to run is a ‘pot luck’ course. 10 weeks. 10 surprises. Each week we will look at a different dance break sequence from over the last 20 years.

The twist – you have no idea what we’ll be covering! It could be Waltz from Glastonbury 2016, Salsa from Bournemouth 2023 or even Paso Doble from Torquay 2012!

From Wednesday 7th October at 7pm, we’re starting something a little different at the studio:

Pot Luck Wednesdays

For 10 weeks, we’ll delve back into dances and sequences we’ve taught over the years — particularly some of those we’ve enjoyed on our dance breaks — and give a different one another outing each Wednesday.

It could be Ballroom. It could be Latin. It could be Waltz, Cha Cha, Foxtrot or Jive.

It might be something you remember really well.

It might be something you vaguely remember doing several years ago.

Or it might result in a lot of blank faces while Antony insists, “We definitely taught you this!”

And there’s one important part of the Pot Luck format:

We’re not telling you what’s coming each week.

You’ll simply have to turn up and find out!

10 weeks for £90 – plus a bonus finale

The full 10-week Pot Luck Wednesdays course is £90 per person.

Anyone booking the complete course will also be able to join us for a bonus 11th-week finale at no extra charge, when we’ll revisit some of the favourites from the previous weeks.

So that’s potentially 11 Wednesday evenings of dancing for £90pp.

If you can’t commit to the whole course, individual evenings will also be available for £10 per person, subject to availability.

Of course, the downside of picking and choosing your weeks is that you won’t know what you’re missing until it’s too late…

Who is it for?

Pot Luck Wednesdays isn’t intended as a beginners’ course. You’ll get the most from it if you already have some Ballroom and Latin experience, such as having attended our Improver classes.

Each week will be a standalone recap rather than part of a progressive syllabus, so you don’t need to have attended every dance or routine when we originally taught it.

Some weeks may be reassuringly familiar. Others may be something completely new to you.

Either way, we’ll recap everything together and see how much we can collectively remember!

We can’t tell you what you’ll be dancing.

But that’s rather the point.

The Parish Council have decided that the most economical way to complete the work is to refurbish both the male and female toilets at the same time.

This does mean that, for approximately the next two weeks from Monday 28th September, our usual toilet facilities will be out of action.

During the refurbishment:

• The disabled toilet inside the studio will remain available for everyone
• There will also be portable toilets available outside
• At busier class times, there may understandably be a little bit of a wait

Where possible, we would therefore recommend using the facilities before arriving at the studio.

We’re sorry for the temporary inconvenience, but hopefully it will all be worthwhile when we have some lovely new facilities to enjoy!

Just to let you know the Parish Council are refurbishing the toilets at the Cherry Orchard. From Monday 28th September the Male and Female toilets will be closed. The disabled toilet will be open, and there will be some external portaloos, but we recommend using facilities before you come to the studio as it could become quite busy at times.

For our next Wednesday evening courses we need your feedback. We have a space to run a 10-week course. Options could include Bachata, Mambo, Merengue or a special ‘Improver Your Technique’ course. Let us know your thoughts and the course would likely start on Wednesday 7th October.

Finally if you intend to attend the competition on Sunday 11th October, a reminder that all tickets must be booked by Friday 2nd October as there will be no tickets sold on the door.

With Cha Cha Cha the name purportedly came from the sound your feet would make on a sandy bar floor, so make sure you’re keeping your toes in contact with the floor at all times!

What’s on the schedule this week

Around The Studio

Temporary Toilets

A warning that our toilets will be mainly out of action from Monday 28th September for a fortnight for refurbishment.

Only the disabled toilet will be available, along with some external portaloos, so we’d recommend using facilities before you attend the studio.

Hopefully the result of brand-spanking new toilets will outweigh a temporary inconvenience.

Upcoming Events

Medallist of the Year Qualifier

Why not come along and experience the atmosphere of a dance competition while supporting our Learn to Dance students as they take to the floor in the Medallist of the Year Qualifier? You don’t need to compete to enjoy the dancing and cheer on some familiar faces! It’s a great chance to see how these events work,

The competition takes place in Reading on Sunday 11th October. Tickets cost £19pp and doors open from 9am (first round 9.45am). You have a wristband that permits you to come and go as you please from the competition.

Tickets must be booked by Friday 2nd October.
