I listen to music all the time; at home, at work, in the car, sometimes even to help me sleep. But without the ability to find new music, I would soon get bored of the same old play lists. I've tried different methods over the years to expand my musical tastes, so hopefully some of these can be useful to somebody else.

1) BBC iPlayer Radio

Now I'm not a great fan of everything played on mainstream radio stations, including the BBC ones, but I do really enjoy using the BBC iPlayer radio. Annoyingly the BBC seems to have the habit of putting all it's niche shows on a stupids hours of the day, when nobody is listening, but with the iPlayer you can simple pick any of these shows from the last 7 days, and re-listen to it on your PC.

2) Music store latest releases

I find my local music stores pretty uninspiring at times, but it doesn't stop me walking in to check out the new releases, and staff recommendations stand. They may only have a handful of CDs in them at a time, but every few weeks I will walk in, scoop up a copy of each CD, and stroll over to a listening post to review my selection.

3) Last.fm

There are many social music sites about, but I seem to have made the most use of Last.fm. A simple plug-in to iTunes allows it to monitor all the music I listen to on my PC and iPod, and uploads the data to the Last.fm website. It's very interesting to be able to see some statistics on your listening habits, but it's most useful feature is the ability to view the listening habits of people that are deemed statistically similar to you. You can browse through your musical neighbors, looking out for bands that they listen to but you are not familiar with, and then even listen to sample tracks of them using the built in music player.

4) Pandora.com

Pandora is an automated music recommendation service, which allows you to input a band or track you enjoy, and it will build you a radio station of similar music for you to listen to. I used Pandora for about a year until sadly the service was restricted to only be available in the USA, although many similar services have popped up since, such as One Llama.

5) Go to gigs

Going to see a band you love live is fantastic, but often it's easy to underestimate the support bands. Support bands tend to be up and coming, or local bands you wouldn't normally run into, so are a great source of new sounds.

6) Pick up a music magazine

I confess I don't often buy music magazines, as I find the articles a waste of time. It might sound cheap, but often in shops I will pick up a copy of Kerrang, or the NME, and flip through to the new releases section, have a quick read and then return it to the shelf. I make a mental note of the bands, and then look them up later on the Internet, when I get home.

7) iTunes

I often use the iTunes store to search for and listen to samples of bands I'm investigating, such as ones I found on Last.fm. You may only have the ability to listen to short samples, but the iTunes catalog is vast, which means you've got a good chance of finding what your looking for. Once in a blue moon I even purchase using the store, as I'm to damn impatient, and can't wait for a CD to be delivered.

8) Magnatune

I discovered Magnatune at work, where I use an Ubuntu based Linux box for my daily tasks. The latest version of Rhythmbox that comes with the operating system, has been integrated with the Magnatune service. Magnatune allows you to listen to all the music you want for free, and even purchase songs using a "Pay what you deem fair" system. The music isn't very mainstream, but selecting a bunch of tracks and playing them on random keeps me entertained.

9) Put you MP3 Player on random

I have a large MP3 collection, which played end to end would span many weeks. It's very easy to find you have music you hardly ever, or never listen to. Putting your player on random, can often help your rediscover some hidden gems.

10) Ask your friends

Don't under estimate your friends or co-workers, even if they do seem to have lame taste in music. It's good to take interest in what other people are listening to, as it helps you diversify your listening habits, and explore something you wouldn't usually listen to.
Rogers connection with music started only a few years out of art college in 1970 when he started designing logos and images for Richard Branson, who at the time was starting up Virgin Records.

Rogers style of distinct detail in his work makes every inch of a picture interesting. After his graduation from art college in 1968, Rogers first book, 'Views' was released in 1975 and received a brilliant reception as a showcase of his early works.

Views, along with Magnetic Storm in 1985 and later Dragons Dream in 2008 have been aspirational books that have shown the true extent of Rogers talents in the construction of epic landscapes, striking worlds and truly wonderful characters.

Any fan of his work would have seen the startling contrast between Rogers work and that of the new film from James Cameron, Avatar. The film has broken box office records, being the highest netting film ever. With a global turn over in excess of $TWO Billion, the film has already won several awards and has been hailed a true adventure epic.

However, the question remains, what was the inspiration for this incredible film. The links to Roger Deans work can be seen in the floating islands and dragons that dominate the startling scenery of Pandora, the world where the story is set.

Its seems very hard to distinguish between drawing inspiration from another artists work or simply taking their entire concept without permission. It is undecided which it is, or if it is either. There can be no mistake, James Cameron is a brilliant Director and Roger Dean an inspirational artist.
I was thinking this over when I realized of how earth un-friendly touring can be. From the gas consumed, and the fast food wrappers... down to the plastic CD's themselves. Perhaps there are worse things, right? Like tire-fires, to start with. Of course, mulling this over got the best of me, and I began to assume (without researching much, as it sounds too much like work) the large carbon footprint of popular bands. As a general rule, I tend to boycott (or at least do not purchase) pop bands. Many other people do the same, as independent artist cool-hunting is the novel thing to do these days. Yet, as these bands (and their hitherto unknown labels) gain popularity, they get broadcast on the radio and vaulted into the consumer cycle. If a major label band is not rejecting traditional management involving the jet-set arena show, or is not publicly announcing what they are doing to reduce their pressure on resources, is likely more interested in the bottom line over this green generation of fans.

"Well known bands such as Bon Jovi or U2 can have as many as 7 or 8 sleeper buses employed on their tours to accommodate the many road crew required for large venues such as stadiums and arenas. These famous bands rarely travel on the bus though; they use air transport or limousines, leaving their crew members to travel by bus. Smaller, less well known bands will usually travel on the bus along with their tech crew." - from Sleeper Bus wiki

A boycott of these business-model type bands that sell out arenas and press 7 billion CD's may be in order. So, it looks like i will be spending a lot less time listening to Static-X, not to mention Metallica (poor Metallica, everyone picks on them) - but I suppose it's no biggie, as a thousand bands sound just like them anyway.

You would think it costs less to have a band travel and see their fans than it would for fans to travel independently to go see them - but without doing the math, i am pretty sure it burns the same amount of fuel for a band to jet around the country than it takes for fans to reach them via plane, train and automobile. Sure, it takes 6 days transatlantic on the Queen Mary II to get from the UK to Boston... but honestly, what else does Bon Jovi have to do? What huge rush are these acts in to get around the world? A sea voyage sounds pretty leisurely to me, and if they are doing this for the enjoyment of their craft, what better, cost-effective, low-impact way to get from point to point than on an ocean liner? Unless, of course, time actually is money.

Sir Paul McCartney is an exception, Radiohead another. That is as far as big name acts - so you can certainly pick and choose among certain news-worthy bands. Figuring them all out is something i would rather give up on than research. Surely, you understand it is a far bigger improvement to my mood to boycott large act music than to spend time dredging through news articles, wikis, and blogs to prove what i suspect with certainty.

There have been a few notes about pirating being low-impact. obvious objections aside, they are right. Forgoing legality, they are definitely right. There has been literature regarding the life cycle of the compact disc, and that is the smallest reason to go digital. See music and thee nvironent blogspot for a similar entry about going digital, and the authors reasons for doing so.

Okay, sure, most large companies offer a fully digital means of getting music to you in a legal fashion. Sure, you could easily steal the music from the big-carbon-spending major label bands (and be a hero in your own mind) but honestly, what you are doing is still creating that viral exposure that these bands rely on. Think about the end to the means of putting music out to the public on a mass scale... it is to come see them live, to buy their merch, wear your shirt and go see them again, and again, and again - and bring friends. I do love seeing live music and merch is a very important part of the cycle, but honestly, if you hear them on rock radio - they don't need your money. If less people paid attention to these jet-set fuel burning machines, the music industry as an art form would be better off.

The lowest of low impact acts are some of the highest echelon talent out there as independent, unsigned or small label artists. Their t-shirts are printed on organic cotton with soy ink. Their shoes are made of hemp or reclaimed rubber. They drove one car to see you, and did not expect 10,000 cars to drive to see them. They brought bikes and skateboards with them to get around town in the meantime. They share mp3s with you...
Maybe this is not for you. Maybe you require pop culture to live (rare but probably true) and I could suggest satellite radio of course, the urban hipsters current raison d'etre... but of course most continue to buy CDs from box stores preferring to gloat from some ill-conceived pedestal that they are better than most because they 'support art" by doing so. You never see them at shows, and they would not think anything wrong with taking a jet to see a band that took a jet to some far flung city instead of waiting for them to come within driving distance, or sourcing out music they like just as much locally.

The worst you could do is buy major label music in CD format from Walmart, then buy merch from a third party and attend stadium shows in the largest city possible (thank you Hannah Montana for topping up our landfills).

Better would be to catch artists when they pop by a city near you (NIN in Toronto from here is a quick drive... but i am too lazy/scared to see if they take a plane or buses... ween is a better example as they drive, but are not as big name) and buy your merch there. It pays for their gas fairly directly and cuts walmart neatly out of your loop.

Best suggestion is to acquire your music online fully digital, back it up to your removable media, do not buy merch from major labels what-so-ever, and see shows in your city. Do what you can to deter large act major label bands from needing to jump on a plane. boycott the radio. boycott plastic music and keep it digital.

Perhaps people lap up pop music due to time constraints, as it is certainly not due to quality of the music. It takes time to source out music you like. Some people read up on bands they hear on Sirius and get new music that way. Some try 'similar artist' searches on Pandora, last.fm or other music tracking sites. This is good as it opens up your tastes to bands that may have not previously caught your attention or may not make MTV or the local radio. I really suggest doing whatever you can to broaden your horizons that way, and cut back on the large pop acts. No real offense to them, but why follow the heard - especially with something as personal as taste in music?

So chill, slow it down. Let every band be an acquired taste. Let it roll around for a while before pouncing on it like a starving cougar. Develop a sense of what you like and what qualities you would like in a band - and certainly what their impact is on the world around you. Low impact music is one decision you can make to have your stainless steel water bottle be less like a hat on a pig, and a far more true symbol of what changes you are trying to make in all aspects of your life on earth.

If this is passe to you, I dare you to recycle every bit of plastic from your kitchen and go entirely glass, metal or wood! Ready? Go!
Indie music therefore has created it's own record companies and ways of doing things. It relies a lot on radio stations and websites on the Internet, for one thing.

There have been many things going on with this side of the business model that the average listener has, perhaps, been unaware of. For example, Sound Exchange recently decided that radio stations on the Internet should be held accountable for royalties and retroactively.

Naturally, there were parties who had disagreements about the fairness of this. One one hand, it seems like the fair thing to do for the artists. On the other hand, the amount of royalties due from major providers of Internet radio such as Pandora would be in the millions of dollars and, for smaller Internet radio broadcasters, this would threaten to wipe them out.

A bill known as the Internet Radio Equality Act was introduced and rallied for, but the net end result of all of this was that the price of being a broadcaster went up.

It would seem that the Internet is just absorbing the old business models and that these ways of doing business are what makes it difficult for the average listener to find and listen to new music, new Indie rock and other alternative music.

Another example of this is that many Internet radio stations are so purely business that they charge the artists for airplay. The artists either pay a one time fee for airplay or can purchase a certain number of plays. This, of course, inflates the idea of just how popular the artist really is.

Even by voting, such as is done on some radio stations and music websites, the artist or band can more or less 'stuff the ballot box..'

Even though the consensus seems to be that the day of the critic is over, and it is true that they can often be wrong, perhaps the need for reliable, knowledgeable sources to provide good music reviews is what is needed once again.
You have the choice to purchase singles or the entire album. Depending on what service you go with, prices may vary from one to the next. Rhapsody has the right idea, and the price is fairly decent. Those using iTunes are hoping they will follow, soon.

Rhapsody is a subscription-based service that allows you to pay a monthly fee. In return, you have full access to the catalog of music available. This review will give you an idea of how they operate, the options available, along with pros and cons.

Starting Out - If you have never signed up for the service before, you are given a 2 week pass, to see if it's to your liking or not. If you like it, then you have two plans to choose from. Unlimited, and Unlimited On the Go. Here's a breakdown of what each has to offer.

Rhapsody To Go - $14.99

- Web Access Anywhere
- Stream Music with Friends
- Rhapsody Radio
- Personalize Playlists
- Unlimited Plays
- Take Music To Go

Rhapsody Unlimited - $12.99

- Web Access Anywhere
- Stream Music with Friends
- Rhapsody Radio
- Personalize Playlists
- Unlimited Plays

With the basic plan, you are allowed to play the music on your computer only, and allow you to listen to any song available in the catalog. If the song's not available, it will let you know. If you go with the higher priced option, you can play the music on your mp3 player, along with other mobile devices. The iPhone has an application available for users, not sure what other phones have the application as well. This is a great idea, if you don't own an iPod or some other type of mp3 player.

I work out at the gym several days a week, and like to change things up on my playlist. Being I'm picky about music, I like to sample before buying. There's nothing worse than buying an album and having 2 out of 12 songs being all I listen to. So this is ideal for those like myself. You can't go wrong with an unlimited subscription at this price, either plan. It allows you to listen and make a playlist of your favorites. This way, when the time comes, you can make the purchases you want, no matter if it's an entire album or just certain tracks.

Something to remember, when signing up for Rhapsody, you must have a Credit or Debit card available, you will not be billed, until the end of your trial has arrived. This is just a holding/validating procedure they do, and nothing to be worried about. If you are not satisfied with the service, you need to make sure you cancel the subscription before the trial ends, if not... then you will be charged. At the time of this review, I'm using the Unlimited service, if I like it enough, I'll be upgrading to the On the Go service, and use it with my iPhone and iPod.

You must allow pop ups to be enables through Rhapsody, as it uses a pop up window for the player. This is not a problem for me, but may bother others who don't like them at all. So be sure you are aware of this, when signing up. If you feel like this is too expensive, you can always use something like Pandora, Last FM, and Slacker radio. All three have apps available for the iPhone as well. I use these for checking out artists/bands similar to the ones I'm already a fan of. Those will be discussed in a later article/review.

The interface of the site is easy to use, nothing difficult, you just type what you are looking for in the search bar, and then it shows you the availability. It's pretty simple, non-cluttered and takes little time to understand. This is something I suggest checking out, if you are someone like myself. In closing, this takes purchasing music to whole new level. You have the ability to purchase songs that you like, as well. Estimated prices for singles are $1.29, and albums are an estimated $9.99 each. Check the site for details, as prices may vary.

Final Thoughts
The Pros:
Works on both, Mac and PC
Don't forget to detail your strategy for staking our your market share against these sellers in the competitive analysis of your business plan. These are three ways brick and mortar music stores can differentiate themselves against these online competitors.
Expertise of Salespeople

By hiring salespeople who will offer customers a deep understanding of the music you sell, your staff can offer recommendations, be sought out as experts, and offer personal taste. Although you may pay a premium for these type of salespeople, they may be able to encourage sales through their own recommendations once customers begin to value their opinions.

Events

Holding seminars or talk-backs with artists, or even live performances if your store can handle it, can be a great way to create buzz around the store in a way that online stores simply cannot. By making events a regular occurrence and tying them in directly with the music you sell, you can promote the products and earn chances to familiarize more customers with your store.

Atmosphere

A third method of differentiation is by creating "atmosphere". With background music, decoration, and additional product offerings to look at, your store can become a unique destination. Uniqueness is especially valued in a time where many customers are tired of the cookie cutter look of big box stores and the lack of character and experience for an online store. If you make sure your store tries to be everything these competitors are not, you will find interest among many customers who take part in the backlash against the de-personalization of the music buying experience and seek to show their individuality not just by what they listen to but by where they buy it.

"Pandora Tomorrow" is one of the most interesting and enchanting video game play delivered in the Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell series. The game was originally titled as the "Shadow Strike" and was later renamed as "Pandora Tomorrow". The game is an external player oriented "Stealth-based" video game that has already gained popularity. This game is the second in the series of video games of Splinter Cell.

What the game provides

As in case of other games in the Splinter Cell series, here also the hero is Sam Fisher, the lone splinter from Third Echelon. Voiced by popular TV artist Michael Ironside, the character Sam Fisher works for the black - ops branch of NSA and indulge in covert activities in the line of a James Bond. The background music is provided in the video game by Lalo Schifrin and the popularity of the game is quite evident from the fact that it has been translated in multiple languages and distributed all over the world.

The game play

Although the name has been changed, the game play remains nearest to the original Splinter Cell game. A few graphical improvements have been inserted here and there. Minute game play changes have been affected too. For example the collectible health kits are no longer an inventory item. Another such example of minor game play change is the addition of a laser sight to the pistol that Sam carries. Sam Fisher can now open a door while carrying a body on his back. He can shoot hanging in a reverse pose and can also perform a jump that is half split.

The multiplayer version

Originally the "Pandora Tomorrow" was a single player game. But one notable change has been introduced lately by converting it to a multi player game because it can accrue the advantages provided by the popular Xbox Live device. Even the Play Station 2 and Personal Computer versions have also been made multiplayer compatible. But the Game Cube version continues to be a single player one. The two combatants in the fray are very well equipped and armed mercenaries against stealthy Shadownet spies. Mercenaries are played as first person and spies are played as third person. The charm of the game is that mercenaries have fast shooting power but spies can hide in the dark and attack with stealthy moves. In some cases they may just sneak past the mercenaries. The maximum number of players that can participate in a multi player game is limited to four players. There are three versions of multiplayer game in "Pandora Tomorrow". The first one is "Neutrilization" in which the spy tries to deactivate the devices and mercenaries try to protect it. The second one is "Extraction" where the spy tries to locate the ND133s and mercenaries try to protect it killing the spies. The third and last one is the "Sabotage" where a modem is to be placed near the wall where the ND 133s are located that would neutralize the device when the timer on the modem stops. Spies try to place the mode, and mercenaries try to prevent it by killing the spies.

The story

Finally, we may have a brief glimpse of the story on which the game is based. The curtain raises at Indonesia 2006 where the militant leaders Darah Dan Doa and Suhadi Sadono have planned a suicide bombing of the U.S military base. The task of Sam Fisher is here in two phases, first infiltrating U.S Embassy and retaking it by Delta Force and then tracking down Sadono in Indonesian soil. Fisher finally finds Sadono and the bomb and Shadownet spies are deputed to neutralize it and catch Sadono alive. Fisher succeeds but is entrusted a further assignment to trace and eliminate Norman Soth, a CIA defector. How? You will know by playing the "Pandora Tomorrow" yourself.
