Our 'Pop-up' store is full of some gorgeous pieces of art. Included is a selection of Rugby Art by Auckland artist, print maker and sculptor Rowan Forbes. His original art includes a piece names 'Haka' (no prizes for guessing the subject of that one), but he has captured the energy of that time honoured tradition. The fiercely contested matches between Australia and New Zealand teams are depicted in a larger piece, 'Try Time'.

European rugby fans will love the smaller painting in our window called 'England vs Italy'. These are one off original paintings, available for just a few weeks via our pop-up store, and would make a truly special reminder of time spent in Auckland during the Rugby World Cup.

Rowan's bold use of colour has also been put to superb effect in his prints which show 'Auckland - City of Sails' in full colour regatta. His depiction of New Zealand crams all the memories of a trip around NZ into one colourful poster, and is a fantastic momento for any child's bedroom.

If you are not familiar with the term 'pop-up' shop, it is one of the latest retail trends, where a vacant retail space temporarily becomes a shop. So here we are "popped-up" in a great space in down town Auckland.

You may have noticed the cute Kiwi used as an emblem by the 'Buy New Zealand Made' organisation.

It is used to identify the origin of the product as NZ, and encourages customers to buy NZ made products. Have you ever wondered about the history of using this fluffy flightless bird as a emblem to represent New Zealand? Here are some fabulous Kiwi facts, taken from a brochure published by the 'Buy NZ Made' organisation.

The Kiwi as an emblem was used in military badges back in 1886
Kiwi Shoe Polish was launched in 1906 in Melbourne (yes in Australia) by man with a NZ wife
During WW1 New Zealanders carved a giant Kiwi into the hill in England

So you are ready to embark on a business trip to India, and wish to take some New Zealand Gifts. You need to stop for a moment to consider business gift giving and the appropriate protocol. As with many countries, in India it is easy to unwittingly offend with your choice of corporate gifts or New Zealand souvenirs, so here are our best tips and suggestions.

Wrapping is significant as certain colours could cause offence

Is a gift necessary?

Gifts are not normally expected at a first meeting, but as the relationship develops it is definitely a good idea. Your gift will be appreciated as a sign of friendship. However as your business contact is likely to reciprocate, make sure your gifts are tasteful but not overly expensive, which could cause some embarrassment.

If you are invited to someone's home you should definitely take a small gift such as sweets, and you will be popular if you take some specifically for any children.

What gifts are appropriate?

Choose gifts that a relatively modest. Make sure that your New Zealand gifts are actually made locally (as much of what appears to be 'Kiwiana' is not made in New Zealand). Gifts which convey New Zealands cultural identity and uniqueness will be appreciated, as will gifts made of NZ natural products.

What gifts should be avoided?

Do not give any leather, which can cause offence. Many Indians do not drink, so do not give alcohol unless you are sure that your recipient does enjoy alcohol. Muslims would not appreciate a gift depicting people naked or semi-naked, or depicting a dog, so any gifts featuring these should be avoided. Jewellery is considered a more personal gift, so it is not appropriate for a man to give to a woman, in the business context.

It is also important that gifts are wrapped in suitable colours, which we can assist with.

Gift giving protocol is different, and you may find the recipient does not open the gift in your presence.

We see a fair few gorgeous NZ made products passing in front of our noses. But do I have a favourite? Absolutely! To be fair it is not a corporate or business gift, and it is a bit girly....but I can't go past this scarf.

There are some people for whom choosing a gift is more difficult than for others. Queen Elizabeth II, one of the worlds richest women, would be at the top of the list. I can't imagine her Christmas or Birthday list would be filled with things she would like if only she had a little more cash!

There is no forgetting that the big sporting event this year in New Zealand is the Rugby World Cup.

The Christchurch Earthquake - How can we help?

The date that altered the lives of thousands of people, and destroyed a beautiful city.

At least in last (September 2010) Christchurch earthquake there was not loss of life. But plenty of frayed nerves remained along with wrecked homes. Many businesses were wrecked too, or came close to the wall. One of our favourite suppliers (Florian, who make fantastic folding travel bags) were in a old building in the central part of town. With the building unsafe to enter, they had to virtually shut-up shop for months, and so for some of their employees, life became even tougher as they lost their jobs too.

But in the last month they have managed to resurrect their business in a new location, and have just recently starting taking orders for manufacture again. Only to be struck by another earthquake. They are lucky; their new premise is sound and this time round they have managed to escape damage to their building and injury to their staff.

So it seems their staff will have jobs this time round, but only so long as they have customers for their products. And this is another practical way can help:

Koru, koru and yet more Koru

Ever wondered why the Koru is so commonly used on NZ gifts and Maori Art? We see a lot of Koru, and if you shop for gifts in NZ you probably do too, so thought it time to explain...

The Koru or spiral is one of the most widely used designs or shapes in New Zealand arts, crafts and design. From old Maori meeting houses through to corporate business logos, arts and crafts, and NZ gifts, the Koru is widely seen throughout New Zealand.

But how and why has the Koru become so prevalent in many NZ gifts, icons and logos?

It has long featured in Maori carvings and decorations, usually incorporated and repeated as part of the overall design. (For example the Kowhaiwhai design in the Business Card holder below incorporates four Koru).

Early Maori found inspiration for the Koru in nature; it is a Maori artistic interpretation of the growing fern fronds (for example the now famous Silver Fern). Each fern frond emerges from the heart of the fern plant in a tightly coiled form, uncurling as it matures.

This is a clue to the meaning of the Koru design. From this beautiful growing fern is easy to see how the Koru symbolises growth and new beginnings. This theme of 'Growth' makes it a appropriate sentiment for many occasions, from gifts for a new business relationship through to a gift marking some personal growth.

I love this time of the year when the pohutukawa trees blossom. From the silvery bud, comes the most gorgeous red blossom, which fall to make a red carpet on the sand or ground beneath. So you are planning a business trip to Russia....what do you need to pack?

Right up there at the top of the list should be business gifts. Russians spend a lot on gifts, and like to give and receive gifts. So you will need to take a collection of gifts. Obviously there will be business gifts for key contacts, but it can be it difficult to do business in Russia without help from the locals, so you should take gifts for others who have helped, for example your car driver, interpreter etc. And not forgetting gifts which would be suitable if you are invited to someone's home for a meal.

Quality Hand Made Chocolates

What sort of gifts are suitable? For a start, remember that the Russians are generous with gifts, so do not take small gifts like pens or pencils unless they are expensive. Try to avoid taking Vodka (even though we have fantastic NZ Vodka). Quality office gifts may be suitable, for example hand blown glass. Remember the attention to detail, so quality wrapping is important for expensive gifts.

If you are invited to someones home, you can take flowers (but ensure there is a 'odd' number of flowers, as 'even' numbers are used for funerals), and quality NZ Chocolates, or expensive wine would be appreciated. It is especially thoughful to have small gifts for any children too (but do not take baby gifts for pregnant women as this is considered bad luck).
