Current activity:

• Making a graphic novel. I'm planning on making this look like a glossy magazine on paper I currently have stashed away.

I've been searching for some designers who might want to advertise in it but I think Emily, Gary, Adam and a new puppetteer I was chatting to the other day may fit the bill.

It will run weekly. Each time I'd like to use a different advertiser. The ads will stay the same for a while because I have to source some good ones.

• Next event is Dr Sketchy Tomorrow in Nottingham. Their last event was a hoot, tomorrow I'll go bearing fully sharpened pencils because that seemed to be the thing that took longest last time.

• Applying for jobs because while I've done well to get this far I could always do with a better regular income.

Note to self, swimming pool is well full on Saturday, keep to the Monday Friday crowd to avoid collision which was completely unavoidable. It doesn't help that the teens have a very free form undisciplined approach to pool use going randomly everywhere as fast as they can.

I'm not too bothered but it does make them almost completely unavoidable even if you're normally the most polite person on the planet. You spend the whole time apologizing even though nothing is your fault, the place is just too crowded.

And the pensioner who asked me to help put on his socks freaked me out. Normally I'm happy to help anyone in need but his heavy breathing was too creepy for me. It could have all been completely innocent but at the time I felt it was above and beyond my usual civic public service duties. I'll refer him to a staff member next time.

It Reminded me of when I broke my arm in a cafe and the owner said I couldn't have an ambulance. I appreciate he didn't want to get a bad reputation but if you are a cafe owner and a customer breaks their arm you can always suggest a Taxi to help them out. Point blank refusing an ambulance is not the way to go. I must mention that if my friends Alisia and Simon and Ms Lajevardi who's first name I can't remeber for the life of me hadn't helped prop me up down to the hospital I would have been screwed. I never got a chance to thank them though because once I arrived I was whisked into a separate ward and couldn't let them know I'd be ok.

Now making a summary of Financial Service documents for a job interview. It's an interesting job so I'm making a lot of effort making it.

Special mention must go to Pan Am: the series for being one of the biggest disappointments of the year. Half and hour into it had no fizz nor pop. It was the worst mix of nothing really happening at all. I craved some kind of car crash, some kind of midflight engine explosion. I think if you're going to make people sit through 6 hours of made up women fretting about their broken nails then you have to give it some chutzpah. And the well trodden path of inflight drama is a wealthy seem to ignore historically, it begs the question, which inflight drama scene is more interesting than this? Your answer, All of them.

Christina Ricci was completely wasted, the review suggested she could be the one bohemian interest in the whole sorry enterprise but all we're given is being slightly late for work! Jesus, I can be slightly late for work every day and it doesn't make it a multi million dollar TV series. Lazy, lazy lazy.

A lot of the reasons why I'm so continuously fed up with films and TV are because of the history. You, as director should be fully aware of what has come before you and try to either do it better or do it differently. Funding being short isn't really a good excuse, you have to raise funds yourself or you only have your self to blame. And a lot of films just don't go far enough, they have great ideas but they don't explore them in enough depth. They fall short.

Things that don't fall short literally are the Ricky Gervais comedy showing on Beeb 2 thursdays. Almost all of it toe
curlingly awkward, which isn't a taste for everyone but the last line to Shaun Williamson upon asked for a quote for the Office says mistakenly' The comedy of a generation'. when they wanted a quote to paint the Office.

Quadratic Occasions...

Have been scanning like a fiend recently.

This was mainly due to a rash of events at Quad last week. Thursday night saw the beginning of the Worlds first circle drawing competition where the main focus was entirely placed on circles.

Groups were encouraged along the way by the organisers so I introduced myself to Dave and Aron to make my own. We went by the name team random after some tense brainstorming left no obvious title for us.

The event itself was very involved, starting with a circle drawing speed challenge saw us collectively draw 636 circles!That was almost 210 each in the space of 2 minutes.

Then we moved onto the next challenge, chinese whispers. I didn't think this was going to work to start but the results were hilarious, the goal was to draw something, describe it to somebody else so accurately they could repeat the drawing on a page of their own.
Our result was so far off the mark I wondered whether I'd ripped a hole in the fabric of space and time and not understood a single instruction throughout the entrire exercise. Aron had drawn the main character fromt the game Angry birds very simply but my interpretation of what he was saying was complete turd. But not to worry the night carried on. then we had circle portrait drawing.

Arons effort was commendable as usually he's a film maker so taking up pencil was a little alien to him.

Then, last of all came the ultimate challenge: draw a perfect circle.

I'd like to say I really cleared up here but the paper was so thin my pen went right through leaving only a badly torn mess. It might have been close to being a perfect circle but you couldn't really tell becasue the sheet was in tatters. Whoops.

Then Friday saw Pixel Synthesis where 2 illustrators knock up some artwork to show off their digital artwork making skills.

They made excellent work but I do wonder what they'd do without the computer, the electricity, the screen, the software and the table. Because if they didn't have those things it would have been impossible to make that kind of work and it's not like you have to pretend to imagine what it would be like if Quad had no facilites becuase the announcement has already been made. Yes Quad has had 100% of it's funding pulled from the council.

So now we enter a world were there are no facilities at all let alone live illustration tutorials.

Then came Saturdays event: Dr Sketchies anti art school. Life drawing with a twist.

Today:

Bought newspaper to seek out jobs. think I might become a funeral assistant trainee. It's got to be better than being on the dole. Although only 22.5 hours a week I'll fill out an application form because if you don't, you get nothing.

Made a few business cards so I can spread myself around better. Although I have no business and almost no stock the will is strong.

Plenty of Quad events coming up. Tomorrow heralds the circle drawing championships. might be fun. Will give it a go but musn't avoid x training with running club. I've been slack.

I entered my mug design for the mug design comp. Hopefully nobody else will have entered or if they have my design was strong enough to fend them off. Will show it off once the deadline has passed and nobody can copy the idea.

That's about it for now, there's lots happening in the next couple of days so will probably next update on Monday 31st October.

Must say this blogging format is shocking. You can't see what you've written for love nor money. May be forced to tweeak the settings until everything is showing all the time rather than when it decides...

The World as it stands:
Today

Friends made:3 ( did the rounds with employment agencies.These include new upstart Apple recruitment, Apollo who have me pencilled in Tomorrow for registration and Adecco who made an excellent start by finding me work immediately but unfortunately it turned out not to be too suitable but they were keen! The level is set for Apollo to impress.)

Enemies vanquished.0 peace reigns throughout derby tonight

Curses lifted. 0 but I might stir things up tomorrow so I have something more interesting to write about.

Secrets uncovered:1 I found a new notice board but I'm going to keep its location a secret to further exploit the advertising market in the west Midlands area.

Lives saved. Countless millions. That Oxfam £3 a month is doing wonders. In my mind at least anyway.

Statistics falsified.1 this is a new way of writing for me, I aim purely for comedic value rather than anything so whimsical as real actual facts.

I'll add regular updates and maybe a spreadsheet to amaze and confound,

Yesterday I joined a running group.

This came after years of relative inaction as a twenty something year old. Everyone was very friendly and welcoming so the next step is to buy some kit and pay member ship fees. A bargain at 20 quid.

Unfortunately there has been very little activity on the cultural and technological front recently so I haven't added much .

I did pop to the flicks to see tinker tailor soldier spy. What I saw was very good but I can't help thinking that it suffered a little over editing with the result of me not entirely following what was happening. I then saw an advert for the BBC TV DVD. This explains everything because at around 11 hours of content the TV version would surely explain more then the film did. And they may also be preparing the audience for a sequel which is a really insipid trait of film makers to take. I like complete films, not films that only tell half the story. And a lot of sequels really aren't necessary are made. Take Matrix for instance, a film that thoroughly doesn't warrant the sequels. Getting back to tinker tailor etc notable points are that John Le Carre himself was a producer and even cameo'd in the party scene. Of which there are many. He could even have been the mystery character in the Santa Claus outfit. I may have missed some of the fine detail in these party scenes because for a cold war era some of the references to communism and Russia are spread liberally around the site.

In conclusion tinker tailor will probably be an excellent triple DVD once the sequels have been released on the public but I feel a little cheated, like there was a whole lot of story that I haven't been told or let in on. Nonetheless the look of the film is gorgeous in early 80s recreational splendor. It felt exactly like the way things looked at that time which is roughly the time I was born so it was almost like seeing the world before I even came to exist and very solid and tangible for it. It even felt similar to another film that's recently been set at that time Spielberg's Super 8. I want all the films I see from now to at least be set in that time I prefer it to full day glow colour photography circa 1985.

Today was successful in a few ways.

It's an ad for my drawing services.
So I've now been to every independent Shop Leeds had to offer. Indeed Such was the success of this I ran out of copies before I even managed to visit all of them!

Sorry to miss you Birds Yard, Dock Street Market and Adelphi Pub, you're next on my hit list.

Worth knowing:
- A3 size copies at the library cost the same as A3 size copies at my local printers.
- You can then tinker with your work in the library. I like to draw around the text in Tippex for added kapow
- Black and white is cheapest although most shades of brown and grey can be disappointing.
- Most independent stores are happy to show posters if they have the space.
- For most purposes of printing most shades of black ink don't work very well but for photocopying, it's fine. If you do want to print it must be the most opaque shade of black you can manage, Sharpie pens are close to the right level you need.

All I got to do now is wait and see what happens. I'm going to make a new ad every month to keep it fresh. I wasn't able to scan the actual ad because that would have needed a memory stick which has gone on an errant trip of its own design.

Oh and before I forget:
Nectarines and for that matter peaches are a terrible lunch item to eat if you want to keep your work clean and tidy. I spilled mine despite my very best efforts all over my hands and had to seek out some free loos at the coach station to wash it off with. I then was caught off by a violent soap disaster missing both my hands and landing squarely on my otherwise pristine artwork. Never taking out a nectarine ever again...Ever.

Unemployed and stuck at home, Update:

Applications sent today: Was considering one that looked professional and full of opportunity. But then after asking for further info the site turned out to be well dodgy so I've held back. Beware phishing, luckily most browsers offer you a warning that the site you're viewing is malevolent.
Then looked at opportunities to volunteer. There is a site to register with but I think I've taken that as far as I can go including filling out a survey. Will get on the phone after writing this to speak to some real people to make absolutely sure all volunteer positions are covered.
Exotic meals made: None but just had Chicken Soup with Toast for lunch. Am quite full but considering making a banana milkshake because I have the will and the motivation. And a surplus of fruit.
Pet Health: Cat's doing well. One tried to use my back as a climbing wall this morning. Unfortunately my skin is still puncturable by claws. It was a good idea to open up the whole flat so I can keep an eye on them. They like to practice touch typing. So far no new works of Shakespeare have emerged but it's only a matter of time. Both now napping the spare room.
Rejections received: None. I'm still awaiting an award winning quality of rejection letter. After all if everything in life is a chance why not make a letter that motivates and captures the spirit? If 404 error pages can be creative then so can rejection letters. Although this could well be because I haven't applied for much recently. Not for want of trying.
I-Player programs and films watched. None, Todays all about being a volunteer....
