I read this book" Bajang Aamad" second time in my life and it was almost a decade that i did not have this book available to me , however as soon as possibly I got the copy , read it again. It is amazing how fresh and interesting this book seems after such a long time since it was first written . This is an Autobiographical book by famous humor writer Col Mohd Khan .

He wrote humorously about his days as a young man who joined army pre-partition , when he took part in World War II against Germany.

Only Col Mohd Khan can write so flawlessly on such a dry topic during most of this read one feels flow and humor in most serious situations and you can almost see what is going on...

It's a good news for many which can't read Urdu or have vision impairment .

Although most of the tales in "Bajang Aamad" are about the time 1940's and a little later, but as he describes every thing it does not seem very strange or like we haven't seen it... he traveled through Iraq, Libya,Palestine, with British army right after he joined ... and described his experiences in very humorous way... He have written more books as, BasalamatRavi, Bazm Araiyan,Badesi Mazah, And Tasaneef Of Col Mohd Khan, however his first book became the most popular book in Urdu literature. While he writes about Nations he saw during his army venture and analyzed them we do see his keen observations which are still true even after more than 65 years . This is the kind of book which makes us think to keep our children literate in Urdu so they do not miss out on good literature like this. Where we may loose spontaneity of His expression in translation... it is a must read! This edition was published in 1992, in computerized printing.

When 73-year-old Chicago resident Naseem Sarwar was retiring from his job with the American government, he and his wife Ijaz Nasreen realised exactly how sorely they missed the company of the colourful, relate-able characters from Urdu literature.

Originally from Faisalabad, the couple has been living in the US for over 40 years. Their relationship with Urdu literature has lasted for more than 35 years and, hungry for distinctly Pakistani writing in their adopted home, they decided to go out in search of a shop that sold books to satiate their appetite.

“There were books being sold on Pakistan, but none of them were in Urdu,” says Naseem.

“We would ask people to send us Urdu newspapers because you couldn’t find anything here,” adds Ijaz.

Eventually, in 2000, they took it upon themselves to change things around and established their own bookstore. Tucked away in a Pakistan-ised part of Chicago’s Devon Street, Kitab Ghar is perhaps the only bookstore of its kind that sells Urdu literature in the US.

“The reason for opening Kitab Ghar was that there was no store for miles around us that was selling Urdu literature,” Naseem says. “Secondly, I was retiring from my job, and we wanted a business "jis mein desi bhaag bhaag ke aana na shuru kardein "(where too many desis wouldn’t come). That’s why we opened a bookstore.”

Ijaz, his lively and energetic wife who hails from a literary family, says her husband found the space for the bookstore while she was on vacation in Pakistan. “It was a surprise!” she laughs.

Pakistanis and Indians who have lived in Chicago speak reverently of the store, whose shelves are laden with biographies, fiction and non-fiction books and basic Urdu learning guides. The couple gets these books through reputed Pakistani publishing houses like the Lahore-based Sang-e-Meel Publications.

“We wanted to open a bookstore so we could introduce Urdu literature here. We also sell Pakistani dramas, speeches of Quaid-e-Azam and DVDs of films here,” Ijaz explains.

But while we spend time in the store, not a single customer walks in. Naseem says they get many orders through their website, but with the diminishing number of Urdu readers, it is uncertain how long the couple can sustain the business.

Their clientele is mostly from the older generation, says Naseem. “There are fewer youngsters coming in.”

Living in the US, young children rarely have the chance to speak Urdu in public and are restricted to speaking it with their family. “It is painful when we see children here who can’t speak Urdu,” he says.

The couple tries to encourage reading. “In fact, if a kid reads one line of Urdu in our store, we give them Lailo Nahar for free,” Naseem says.

But despite decreasing demand, Naseem and Ijaz see some signs of hope. According to Naseem, “There is now a trend where parents are buying basic guides on how to learn Urdu for their children.”

He also feels that the language is considered a part of their Pakistani identity by many younger parents raising their children in the US. “Even when parents here can’t teach their children to write in Urdu, they try and talk to them in the language. They feel that Urdu is part of their identity and that is how we try to promote it too.”

About LLF 2016 & ’Love Letters’ the Play

Books and Pamphlets from Lahore Lit Fest 2016

The security situation led to a change in venue and the shift from AlHamra to the Avari Hotel’s grounds ended up making a quite a difference for this year’s Lahore Lit Fest. Not only was the trademark art exhibit missing, there was a distinct shortage of wares and cultural activities to engage LLF-goers not attending the on-going sessions. I wonder why the Rafi Peer crew were no where to be seen. Their exhibit in the main hall, with a plethora of colourful puppets on display and a variety of publications describing events at the Peeru’s restaurant and theatre were sorely missed.

Where were the LLF volunteers providing pamphlets and booklets with the programs printed? The LLF stamped mugs, tees and tote bags? The yearly special edition of Newsweek Pakistan with stories dedicated to the event. The offering of books were adequate with Readings and Liberty Books having the widest variety available. However the smattering of complementary stalls were quite sad. Aside from the Desi Writer’s Lounge, the other stalls were boring or had little to offer. Speaking of which, where were the folks from The Missing Slate?

This being the fourth year of it’s existence, it may seem a bit extreme to sound so nostalgic, but this gives credit to the organisers who managed the earlier events effortlessly.

A.R. Gurney’s ‘Love Letters’ was performed by Rehana Saigol and Imran Aslam on Saturday, 20th February at the Lit Fest. Looking a vision in her sparkly dangly earrings and ruffly black dress, Saigol effortlessly transformed into the sensitive yet witty Melissa, the heroine in the duo. Aslam aptly played the responsible yet love-lorn Andy Lad the Third, whose persistent letter-writing wins the heart and soul of Melissa.

The musical interludes that punctuated sessions of letter-writing were tastefully selected - punctuating the innocence of childhood kinship or heating up the beginnings of a lustful affair- with the musical stylings of the greats such as Elvis Presley and Diana Ross at service. Arif Mahmood’s photos were sweet additions to the tenderly enacted romance on the LLF stage, documenting Melissa and Andy’s interactions from the cradle to the grave.

The seating capacity for the play underestimated the demand for live theatre as the organisers hastily lined up chairs to fill up the back of the hall. Even then, another 300 LLF goers were barely kept outside the hall, with youngsters asked to sit up on the carpet , front-row, to empty chairs for adults. I hope the play organizers have understood the enthusiasm for live theatrical performances and will hold stage such performances on the regular, preferably at more easily-accessible venues.

Year 2016 has dealt another blow to the aficionados of Urdu literature; Urdu novel writer Fatima Surraya , was better known as beloved 'Bajia', passed away on Wednesday night at her home in Karachi.

A true woman of letters, Bajia had penned over 300 plays for members of Pakistani society, with Afshan being one of her most popular serials to air on television.

Her talented siblings include poet Zehra Nigah, painter and writer-cum-TV presenter Anwar Maqsood, and culinary expert Zubaida Tariq.

Love,love, LOVE how Elizabeth Gilbert gets what's wrong with our perceptions around creativity! This is an engaging read, without the 'holier-than-thou' overtones most guides have. In fact, it reads more like journal entries than a 'self-help' book, and that's perfect. Those guides are last things we need crowding our bookshelves.

Yeah, so do read this. You might hate it, but it'll get your backburner on overdrive and kick you out of complacency.

New Coloring Books Trends for Relaxation!

You read that correctly, Coloring books specially designed for adults are now the hottest commodity - a lot like the designer cupcake fad from a few years back.

The marketing spiel is that the act of coloring helps the mind disengage from day-to-day stressors, some even comparing the daily coloring activity to meditation!

If you think about it, I have yet to see a toddler who isn't relaxed while coloring away with crayons.

While I was scrolling through Facebook, I came across this article announcing a controversy over adult coloring books.

According to the author, there are two camps regarding coloring books for adults.

There are those people love coloring for the relaxation it provides those suffering from mental health issues or are just plain overwhelmed.
Then there is whole other group that hates the trend for condoning "childish pursuits for grownups".

The book is one of the earliest scripts about Tasawwuf. The author, Sayyad Ali ibn Uthman Hajveri, commonly known as “Data Ganj Bakhsh” in South Asia, was one of the greatest Sufi sheikhs of Indian subcontinent. He was born in Ghazna (present day Afghanistan) and migrated to Lahore (Pakistan) by the order of his sheikh.

This book is the most famous work of the author and is considered one of the classical books on Sufism, read by many as a text book of the ancient Sufism. It describes and discusses Sufi methods and doctrines of the past.

Short biographies of famous Sahaba, Ahl-e-Bayt, Tabaeen and other sufi sheikhs cover most part of the book. These biographies describe the Sufic attributes of their lives, and shows how the Sufism evolved through the first centuries.

There is a shrine in Lahore that attracts the kings and rulers and common people alike. This practice has persisted for last many centuries. The man lying in his shrine was embraced by all communities including the Hindus and Sikhs and Parsees. Even after the passage of 966 years, his fame has risen everyday, evermore. Even after his demise, he is revered as a saint, and his tomb is a place of seeking spiritual blessings. Nowadays we connect with him, Ali Hujwiri, chiefly through his masterpiece, Kashf-ul-Mahjub. The book brought the author everlasting reverence and fame.According to R A Nicholson, Hujwiri was born in the last decade of the tenth century or in the first decade of the eleventh century in Ghazna, now in Afghanistan.

Apart from Kashf-ul-Mahjub, according to his own statement, Hujwiri was the author of another nine books, none of which have survived. R. A. Nicholoson has mentioned them by name. Kashf-ul-Mahjub was written in Lahore, in response to the request of a certain God-seeker Abu Saeed, e relative or fellow-townsman of the author. During the composition of the book, the writer was hindered by the lack of the books which were left in his hometown. Still he – making use of his encyclopedic knowledge – managed to produce a book which excelled Imam Abul Qasim al-Qushairi’s great work on Sufism ar-Risala al-Qushairiyya. Al-Qushairi was a Hujwiri’s contemporary.

Kashf-ul-Mahjub deals with the complete system of Sufism, setting out and discussing its principles and practices. An early orthodox work on tasawwuf in Persian, Kashf-ul-Mahjub includes references to other mystic writers and their works. The work sheds light on the history, ideology and practice of Sufism. The author offers the traveller on the Path (salik) universal and timeless advice on belief, contemplation, generosity, spiritual courtesy, prayer, almsgiving, companionship, love and purification from foulness. In addition, he helps us distinguish false spirituality and false guides from the real, a discernment just as significant today as then.

This classic text contains brief biographies of the eminent saints of the past and the present, including Fudail ibn Iyaz, the robber who becomes a great spiritual director; Ibrahim ibn Adham, the prince who renounces everything when the divine call found way to his heart; Malik ibn Dinar, who is awoken to the spiritual reality by a voice from the unseen; and Habib Ra’i, whose sheep are looked after by his wolf. The book is a rich store of anecdotes. Stories built around their lives arouse the interest of the reader. Their words of wisdom help one in inner awakening.

An important theme that runs through the book is strictly practising the outward observances of Islamic injunctions. The book is a rich store of anecdotes. Stories built around their lives arouse the interest of the reader. Their words of wisdom help one in inner awakening.

An important theme that runs through the book is strictly practising the outward observances of Islamic injunctions. A great upholder of the sacred law, Ali Hujwiri expalins clearly that no God-seeker – not even one who attains the supreme degree of spiritual advancement – is above the commands of the Qur’an and Sunna. A true Sufi is, in the eyes of Ali Hujwiri, only the one who has held fast to the embrace of the Holy Prophet, and has observed the outward forms of devotion which are incumbent on every Muslim; he must follow the path of the inner spiritual truth of mysticism and Sharia Law; they should not be separated from each other. “The Law without the Truth,” says Hujwiri, “is ostentation, and the Truth without the Law is hypocrisy. Their mutual relation may be compared to that of body and spirit: when the spirit departs from the body, the living body becomes a corpse, and the spirit vanishes like wind. The Moslem profession of faith includes both: the words, ‘There is no God but Allah,’ are the Truth, and the words, ‘Mohammed is the Apostle of Allah,’ are the Law; anyone who denies the Truth is an infidel, and any one who rejects the Law is a heretic.”

Kashf-ul-Mahjub is a powerful and persuasive writing. The authenticity of the book appeals equally to spiritualists and formalists; its material comes from the primary sources of Islamic law. Hundreds of Qur’anic verses plus traditions elevate the rank of the book. What the Qur’an preaches and the Prophet experiences, an aspirant to Sufism puts into practice.

R A Nicholson, an eminent English Orientalist, writes in the preface of Kashf-ul-Mahjub, which he rendered into English: “It … has the merit … of bringing us into immediate touch with the author himself, his views, experiences, and adventures, while incidentally it throws light on the manners of dervishes in various parts of the Moslem world. His exposition of the Sufi doctrine and practice is distinguished not only by wide learning and firsthand knowledge but also by the strongly personal character impressed on everything he writes.”

The name itself explains the function of the book: it raises the curtain of heedlessness. The book has been recommended by scholars and sufi masters as a guide for developing positive personality traits. Awliya Allah have paid homage to the book in different words: it a guide for the novice and beacon light for master-sailors; comprehensive advice; a unique book and a perfect guide; instrumental to the discovery of a perfect guide. In her book “Muslim Saints of South Asia: The Eleventh to Fifteenth Centuries”, Anna Suvorova holds that Allama’s Iqbal’s verse ‘The fame of the Truth was exalted by his words’, probably alludes to Kashf-ul-Mahjub.

On certain issues the author quotes earlier authors and analyizes their ideas before giving his own opinion. His commentary on such occasions shows us the depth of knowledge with which the Lord blessed him. Many moral lessons of mysticism are illustrated by examples from the writer’s own experience on the path of enlightenment. Also, in order to illustrate his point, at times he relates stories of contemporary and past sufi masters.

January 18th is the day when legendary writer Saadat Hassan Manto died years ago. He lived a short yet eventful life - chock-full of struggle and creativity.

He migrated to Pakistan in 1948 and lived in "Laxmi Mention" on "Mall Rd Lahore" and read at Pak Tea House frequently. Before he left India, he was popular as film script writer there.

Manto's famous books include Bou, Dhuan, Thanda gosht, he was too daring in his expression for that era , and even today still can be called bold.

He died young but left impact on literary culture of our society, lots of his characters became legendary later.

Today 2nd April 2010 National Book Day ...

Just found out that Actress Reema been given the rank of book ambassador for National Book foundation Pakistan , so now we have one more reason to see her on screen.

Above mentioned organization is suppose to promote book culture in Pakistan, however most of its effectiveness gets wasted due to "red tape" way of function.... and the benefits hardly can reach the real public or at least not in timely manner.

Finally I read it ,At first this book, "In Other Rooms, Other Wonders" did not invoke any curiosity it was more like one sided perspective of things. Honestly, the first few chapters seemed irrelevant and not interesting enough to continue reading; however halfway through the book writer started to make sense. Mueenuddin's description of place and people got more real, especially the part where he writes about Europe, his expressions are more nicer and sweet, may be due to his brought up in USA, his perspective always appeared as one of an outsider's for Pakistan, and only the things shocking to him, he considered worth mentioning.

The author totally skipped the real people living in cities, average lives, average people. He just got caught up in the feudal part of the system, and he is not to blame for it, as it is a big part of our reality. Any one who has experienced a fairer and civilized system can not ignore the disparity of it all.

Where his expression is lot more lead by his soft spot for the West and especially the United States of America - Mueenudin's critical point of view is only limited to Pakistani society. If you talk about morality and values, the West has lost its hard-earned value system as well and it is not hard to ignore the decline. May be in his next book, he can throw some light on that too.

I think the book is a good effort for a starter, as a dialogue and identity search for Pakistan, book consists more on observations or sketches as characters. Although I do see lots of stories sprouting in between, however it may need another attempt to bring out the stories from his characters.
