André Saraiva, known to many simply as André, began writing graffiti in and around Paris in the 1980s. With a unique style and vibrant color palette, he helped to invigorate the early street-art scene. André’s mark is “Mr. A”—a top-hatted, cheshire-cat-mouthed stick figure. His work eventually carried him to a level that merited an appearance in the widely acclaimed 2010 documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop.

André’s raw yet debonair persona has now become the base of a global empire. Aside from collaborations with countless “in-demand” brands, he has opened Le Baron nightclubs in New York, Paris, Tokyo, and London, where The New York Times claims his door policy has “rearranged the sociopolitical map of destination desire and mobilized a new class of bohemian jet-setters.”

As guest curator of Chapter 47, André has created content with close friends and collaborators, including Ed Banger, Kitsune, Daft Punk, Gaspard Noe, Justice, and Chapiron.

On the 28th of January, the Forum Kunst Rottweil will unveil Counterparts, an exhibition featuring works by painters Hendrik Beikirch (DE) and Luciano Calderon (CH/AR), and the photographer Nils Müller (DE).

Through collaborative dialogue, the three created new works that provide a unique interpretation of graffiti artists and their reception by the public.

Graffiti artists shape the appearance of urban spaces, yet often work without revealing their personal identities. Why do they break laws, invest much time and energy, and risk getting prosecuted? Counterparts is twisting the logic of identity by delivering a rare glimpse of some of the performers of this relatively young art form, fueling one’s fascination with the artists and their stories.

For Counterparts, Müller, well known for documenting subway graffiti worldwide, took portrait shots of three prolific German artists. Normally, his photos show the figures with covered faces due to the clandestine nature of their work, but this time, Müller reveals the faces of this secretive subculture. Furthermore, the close-ups provide the viewer with an intense face-to-face encounter. Müller’s photos are accompanied with short biographies of each artist to give better insight.

Hendrik Beikirch recreates Müller’s images in his larger-than-life paintings, yet his contribution to Counterparts chooses to obscure the artist’s’ visages, reinforcing their common affiliation and highlighting striking individual differences.

Calderon’s version is more abstract. Meeting the needs of the expansive exhibition space, he created a large centerpiece: a 6-meter-high mask painting. The mask is covered with lettering using Calderon’s graffiti style, and further, incorporates elements of South American typography inspired by the Pixação from Brazil and the tattoos of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha.

Counterparts harnesses three highly unique and contrasting styles: the monochrome painting of Beikirch, the black and white photography of Müller, and the outspoken lettering of Calderon, and gives the visitor a rare opportunity to see these artists in consonance.

The website counter-parts.de will document the working process, releasing images and videos pertaining to the project. The exhibition will open on January 28, 2012 and will run through March 11, 2012.

The Forum Kunst Rottweil, located between Stuttgart and Zürich, is a non-commercial art space founded in 1970 that has established a reputation for exhibiting world-renowned artists throughout its 40-year history.

The exhibition is curated by Robert Hak and Martin Schulze.

"Look into it - if you know how..." A new show by longtime artist and friend, Rich Jacobs opens Saturday, January 28, 2012. In this new exhibition, Jacobs leads with the feelings associated with the creative process. In making abstract work the artist investigates the question of why he himself is drawn to making things. Jacobs's newest body of work shows a more mature departure from his well-known figurative character heads that we have seen in the past, yet follow the same atonal rhythms that his music displays. With almost 100 new pieces including works on wood, pencil drawings, renderings, and patterns, Jacobs modestly asks that viewer just consider his works for a brief moment. "Beauty is a rare thing" says the artist, he hopes one will be inspired to make things after viewing the show. "Just a glance" he requests, "a look into it - if you can."

Coinciding with this new exhibition will be a small "Move" group show, curated by Rich Jacobs. Featuring one piece each by artists: Sandy Yang, Aya Muto, Jeff Canham, Amanda Marsalis, James Gallagher, Billy Sprague, Orion Shepherd , Kelly Nicholson, Jordin Isip, Simone Shubuck, Erika Barboa, Clint Woodside, Tim Kerr, and possibly more. Each artist has been selected by Jacobs to show the influences and sometimes inspirations for his abstract works. As one approaches the gallery entrance -the viewer will instantly be asked a lot to visually consider. is it a large group show or the work of one artist? there seems to be groups of work that seem informed by one another but only somewhat loosely...there is a line that ties them together-what is it? We traveled from New York to Detroit documenting Ron English and the integration of his family into his art and pranks. China Heights is proud to be presenting 'Casual Cosmology', an exhibition by East London artist Chrissie Abbott.

Influenced lightly by 60's and early 70's vinyl sleeves, photographs and typography, and heavily by nature, space, time, and in turn the future; Abbott creates tangible versions of alternate realities, dreams of nature and internal theories of metaphysics and the apocalypse, by using mixed media approaches including collage, pen and ink, acrylic and silkscreen printing.

While Cosmology is a disciplined study of the universe as a whole - seeking to understand the origin, structure and space-time relationships of the universe - neon colours in Abbott's work direct reactions to a casual, sunnier side of theoretical thinking, while her ultimately psychedelic visuals leak drops of irony and humour. Paired, these applications keep the artworks from getting too deep, and sequentially predictable.

'Casual Cosmology' is a translation of pattern work and found imagery into Abbott's own predictions of the future we're headed towards, which is essentially a big dayglow hug.

Tim Van Laere Gallery is pleased to announce Day by Day Part II, the first Belgian solo exhibition of Armenian-born artist Armen Eloyan.

In Armen Eloyan's impasto paintings a wonderful pathos, brutality, sensuality and a sense for the grotesque all coexist in some post-disaster condition. Eloyan creates a mood, and this mood, this state of mind echoes throughout the exhibition. Most canvases have enigmatic titles like The Light called „Day“, and the Darkness called „Night“ and Jekaterina Jekaterina, but are populated by a familiar subject matter such as cartoon characters, teapots or tomato-heads. These characters are drawn in broad painterly strokes, but come across as extremely powerful.

“It is based on a cartoon, but it is not a real cartoon, it's an abstract vision of it. It's faking up a painting. If I paint for example Coming-Painting, it's a De Kooning, but done much faster and looser. Willem De Kooning and Philip Guston guide me through this.” states Eloyan. By using diptychs for Rabbit and Bear or Bear and Rabbit, The Door and Dracula Eloyan mines the vaguely existential, as much as he wants to do the opposite of the Minimalists. Eloyan's works all relate to the body, the execution of his paintings is a brutally physical act. Day by Day Part II is an exhibition imbued with Eloyan’s drive to celebrate the act of painting and the uncompromising need to delve beneath the layers of pure aesthetic.

NewGallery is pleased to present the fifth exhibition in a series showcasing emerging abstract painters. Folded Plateaus is an exciting series of work produced by London-based artist, Sam Mould a current MA student at The Slade School of Fine Art after graduating from Camberwell BA Painting in 2010.

Folded Plateaus is a series of work that derives from the process of de-constructing and re-uniting surfaces. Mould is interested in the process of logical decision-making during the act of painting, a process that does not involve any pre-conceived notions of the final outcome, instead it derives from the artist’s reaction to the materials at hand, moving from one specific decision to the next.

The juxtaposition of works within the space allows them to engage with their environment, mapping the surroundings in relation to the paintings themselves as objects, subsequently raising questions about how the ideas of time, form, and space can collate through the practice of image making.

The works in this exhibition are presented as both separate individuals, and as a whole, allowing the viewer to draw their own conclusions about the boundaries between painting, sculpture and installation.
