Sorry to my Entrecard friends. I have not dropped on any of them for about 2 days now. I'm not planning on severing myself from the service, it's just that I've been feeling pretty damn tired and have been pretty damn lazy to do it. I tend to get to my blog reading (and dropping) at approx. 10PM. Because of that, I usually don't go to bed till close to midnight. It's not all the web's fault, Family Guy is on at 11PM and I'll find myself watching it while online. I pretty much consider this "my online work" because, let's face it friends, dropping and reading can be a time consuming and tedious task. Last night, I got to thinking of my online work and was about to get started on it, until I flipped the channel and started watching this one movie called Shooter. I don't know what it is with me and snipers but I thought the movie was pretty bad ass. Nowhere near as good as Enemy at the Gates (one of the most bad ass sniper movies EVER) but nevertheless, a good flick. Then I noticed that our cat was outside and I had out there and get him. I spent a good 15 mins out in the cold trying to get our cat out of the neighbors yard. I wouldn't doubt it if that's why I'm feeling like crap today. I felt hot as hell this morning and I started coughing up all kinds of crap... I came in to work though, figuring it would calm down some... It has, but still, I'm not up to snuff right now. At least we're getting Thursday and Friday off. The kids are on spring break this week and we weren't able to get the whole week off, like we usually do, so we had to settle for 2 days. It would suck if we spent those 2 days sick... Later!

Win a MP3 player by entering simple Contest – Stop Email SPAM contest!

Hello readers here’s something which all the Internet surfers look for. The reception at the end of the avenue, offers a distraction from the compelling call of the sea. Infact its a mini beach by itself, coarse gravel sand, a couple of boats ,sails, fishing nets, hurricane lanterns, thatched hut, so you stop in your tracks and go to inspect and enquire.

The receptionist with large mildly sad eyes is eager to please, offering information on the 30 odd villas and the things to do which are attractively displayed. Apparently he is a little apologetic about the peaceful atmosphere and my manila shirt immediately brackets me into a things to do person.

So I am offered a day at the beach and a day at the island, a package very aptly called the Beach Island Tango, a picnic by the riverside with bonfire evening, sailing in a local pongai, in the lagoons & back waters that lace this fishing village of Ullal, or just a revitalizing ayurvedic massage.

Extremely proud of this enchanting part of the Konkan coast, he tells you how the Ullal beach got its name as a exclamation of delight O la la of the Portuguese sailors who sighted it. Laterly becoming greedy, to acquire it, they attacked the heroic queen of Ullal, Abbakkarani in the year 1556 but were severly defeated. He readily offers to take you to the Temple of Abbakkarani and the shrine on Someshwara rock an outcrop on the beach.

I expected to see the retired , and the elderly. But was surprised to see young couples with infants in their arms, exuberant shrieks from the swimming pool didnt seem to alter the benign expression of the sun bathers sprawled on lethargic arm chairs, while the cuckoos and drongoes set up a qawali between the casuarina trees.

The season starts here in September/ October and goes on till May, But I am told in the Monsoon month of June July and August , the place has a sort of exaggerated beauty, the 1000 ft. beach front a battle ground of waves, sand, shells, the casuarina trees swaying dangerously and the raucous chatter of drongoes, minahs and bee eaters add splashes of colour to the grey skies and rain soaked earth.

All in one line brochure of Summer Sands , a place where peace finds you says it all. And now back to the regular everyday life...

Please If reader's like it I suggest them to comment on ma experience and please contribute your Travel experience here so that i can publish it here... The 12th century Hoysalas who ruled from here had a culturally thriving reign. They patronized the arts and encouraged temple architecture. The temples from this period, specially the ones in Belur and Halebid, are less famous than but as tingling as those of Khajuraho. Visitors are invariably impressed with the sheer number and quality of these temples that bear silent testimony to the up-down course of time. Now just two small towns that sit quietly by each other, Belur and Halebid are nevertheless great places to at least look into if not to stay in. The bustling town of Hassan is a transportation hub and where most visitors to the two temple towns of Belur and Halebid stay.

Belur
The Hoysala capital before Halebid, Belur stands on the banks of the River Yagachi. Along with Halebid, (both cities are usually spoken of in the same breath), it presents to the visitor some of the best and most refined Hindu art and architecture. If finely detailed carving and sculptures that seem to live fascinate you, then prepare to be entranced at the Chennakesava Temple. The earrings on the lobes of the lovely dancers can rotate, and droplets bead the hair of some. It’s almost as if a whole living world froze as you entered, waiting to take up where they paused after you leave. Built in 1116 AD to the flute-playing, butter-stealing but incredibly wise incarnation of Vishnu, Lord Krishna, this temple proves the amount of importance art enjoyed under the Hoysala kings. They encouraged the practice of having artists actually sign their pieces!

It was the medium of steatite that allowed the artist to really have his imagined creation come true. Soft initially and so easy to detail, steatite hardens with prolonged exposure. This temple that took over a century to create still has daily prayer offerings. Most of the superstructure has collapsed but the interiors with their fascinating columns and intricately carved brackets are simply awe-inspiring. The gopuram (tower) has sensual carvings of dancing girls that could rival anything in Khajuraho. 3

Two other comparatively minor temples in Belur are the Viranarayan and the Chennigaraya, both finely sculptured and from the Hoysala times.

Halebid
Halebid was the capital of the great Hoysala kingdom from 1311 to 1327, when it got destroyed during a Delhi Sultanate attack. Originally called Dvarasamudra, it was renamed Halebidu (or ‘old capital’) when the seat of power shifted. The Hoysaleswara Temple is the largest Hoysala temple and luckily it survived the attack by the northern invaders. Actually two shrines, both dedicated to Lord Shiva, both with rather big Nandi bulls facing the entrance, this temple was never really completed in spite of the 87 years that were poured into its construction. Begun in 1121 this temple has beautifully carved detailed depictions of scenes from the epics, of mythical seemingly Gothic figures and sculptures of much of the Hindu divine pantheon. Though the superstructure was never completed every inch of the existing structure is covered with intricate painstakingly carved sculpture. This labour of love is truly numero uno stuff.

The Archaeological Museum has some ancient statues and other finds. The Kedareshwara Temple and the Jain Bastis (temples) also deserve a dekko (‘dekho’ is Hindustani for ‘look’). Be certain to carry a torch: some of the old masons made light of the matter of ventilation and illumination!

Getting Around in BELUR n HALEBID

If you are plannning to travel by bus anywhere around you’ll realize that there are a lot of people in these little towns. There are regular buses plying between Belur and Halebid, and from both places to Hassan but they aren’t a very comfortable option. For the 20km intervening distance (Belur-Halebid; 33 km-Halebid-Hassan) hire a cab or take an auto-rickshaw.

Accommodation:
Many stay close by Hassan. Hassan is very well connected to Bangalore and Mysore by rail and road and has a decent range of hotels and restaurants. Belur is now in the throes of development so there is some basic accommodation available.

Halebid has only the one state-tourism hotel, which is neat but not air-conditioned. However, it’s a nice enough place to spend a night in, in `rural’ India. Food is out and out basic and simple at all three places Hassan, Belur and Halebid.

Getting to BELUR n HALEBID

By Airways: The nearest airport is at Bangalore from where it is about 4 hrs by road to Belur, and another 20 minutes to Halebid.

By Roads: There are direct buses on this route and a daily train from Hassan, 1 hr away by road. The nearest railway station is at Hassan (1 hr). Buses run through the day till 11:30 in the evening. There are direct services from Bangalore, Mysore, Mangalore and Arsikere though not very frequent ones.

By Trains: There are trains to Hassan from all over the state. It’s very easy to get to Belur from here. The best way to reach Belur or Halebid by bus if you are dependent on public transport is from Hassan, which is very well connected to the both these place as well as to the rest of the region. Otherwise you can rent a car with a driver at Hassan and do the circuit at your own pace.

BELUR n HALEBID city Gateways

The important coffee town of Chikmaglur is the north east of Belur. Bidar was the capital of the Bahmani kings from 1428 till it later passed into the hands of the Barid Shahi dynasty. There are some beautiful specimens of typical Muslim art and architecture here.

Here you can see Fragments of old colourful mosaics, grand old tombs of the Bahmani and Barid kings and an impressive 15th century fort that still encircles the town give Bidar its plesant charm. It is a quiet place and not many tourist arrives here , its mostly becauze they dont advertise about its historical monuments. Due to which most of the tourist are unaware of Bidar.
Bidar is famous for being the place where Bidriware, a form of silver filigree art, originated. Bidriware is silver filigree done in Islamic motifs and set against a dark background of blackened zinc, tin, copper and lead to create the most striking ashtrays, boxes, bangles and such.

Near Bidar is the town of Gulbarga, which was the Bahmani capital before the honour shifted to Bidar. The old fort at Gulbarga still stands, as do some beautiful mausoleums and mosques.

Getting there to Bidar

By Road:
Bidar is well connected by public road transport to many places in South India including Gulbarga (near Bijapur), Bijapur, Bangalore and Hyderabad (the capital of Andhra Pradesh).

By Train:
There are direct trains to Bidar from places on the main Mumbai - Secunderabad - Chennai route (i.e. Bombay-Hyderabad-Madras). Belgaum is located on the north western border of Karnataka, within minute distance from Goa and Mumbai. Panaji, the capital of Goa is 5 hrs by road from Belguam.

Belgaum has been part of the Chalukyan, Rattan, Vijayanagara, Bahmani and Maratha empires. There are some interesting testaments to those days. The old fort, now under restoration, was built in 1481 over an older original fort. The Masjid-I-Sata mosque inside is beautiful. Remnants of the old colony, Kamala Basti, are still found, as is a black Neminatha stone sculpture. There is a lot of Jain architecture in Belgaum. An olden temple stands some way off from the Fort has lovely carvings of musicians. Just outside Belgaum is Kapileswara, which has one of the oldest Hindu temples.Belguam is overall a picnic spot for tourist and outsiders. A good place where you can find all spots at one location.

If having completed your trip of Karnataka, you find you’ve ended in the north (Hampi-Hospet-Badami-Gulbarga-Bidar-Bijapur) Belgaum is a good place to leave from. Alternatively, if you decide to begin your tour around Karnataka with the northern circuit of ancient cities and fabulous ruins, then Belgaum is a good entry point.

Getting To Belguam:

By Train: Trains take only 15½ hrs to Mumbai, going to Pune is 10 ½ hrs, and it takes 13¾ hrs to Bangalore.

By Air:Belgaum also has a functional airport .

By Road:There are car-rental services from where a car and driver may be hired so you can do the trip in comfort. Badami was the capital from 540 to 757 AD, after which the Chalukyans lost out to the emerging power, the Rashtrakutas.

Badami saw a succession of rulers of which the Chalukyas were only the most important. There is architecture and sculpture here from periods ranging as far back as the 7th century AD Pallava rule to as recently as the 19th century Marathas.
