Calls for Papers and Updates from Signs

Dear Colleagues—

As we head into summer, I wanted to update you on the work we are doing at Signs: Journal of Women in Culture and Society—and especially the two calls for papers that are currently active.

As a reminder, Signs is accepting submissions for a special issue titled “Gender and the Rise of the Global Right.” We are seeking investigations of the Right’s representational politics, its workings in discourse, mass media, human rights, law, and culture broadly conceived. We welcome submissions from all disciplines, and especially submissions that are engaging across disciplines and that are themselves inter- or transdisciplinary. The issue will be coedited by Agnieszka Graff, Ratna Kapur, and me. Submissions are due by September 15, so please help us spread the word! The full call for papers is available here.

We are also announcing the call for submissions for the2019 Catharine Stimpson Prize for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship. Designed to recognize excellence and innovation in the work of emerging feminist scholars, the Stimpson Prize is awarded biennially to the best paper in an international competition. Feminist scholars in the early years of their careers (fewer than seven years since receipt of the terminal degree) are eligible to submit. This includes current graduate students. Papers may be on any topic that falls under the broad rubric of interdisciplinary feminist scholarship, and all papers submitted for the Stimpson Prize will be considered for possible publication in Signs. The deadline for submissions is March 1, 2018. Please let your colleagues, students, and networks know about this opportunity. The full call is available here.

And please join me in congratulating the co-winners of the 2017 Stimpson Prize, Cameron Awkward-Rich for his article “Trans, Feminism: Or, Reading like a Depressed Transsexual” and Meghan Healy-Clancy for her “The Family Politics of the Federation of South African Women: A History of Public Motherhood in Women’s Antiracist Activism.” Both articles were published in themost recent issue of Signs.

We also congratulate Sabrina Strings, whose article “Obese Black Women as ‘Social Dead Weight’: Reinventing the ‘Diseased Black Woman’” won the 2017 Distinguished Contribution to Scholarship Article Award from the Race, Gender, and Class section of the American Sociological Association, and Paige Sweet, whose article “Chronic Victims, Risky Women: Domestic Violence Advocacy and the Medicalization of Abuse” was named the co-winner of the ASA’s Sex and Gender section’s 2017 Distinguished Article Award.

Our #FeministResistance page is the new home of a variety of resources that can be used to critique, historicize, analyze, and teach during the current crisis. These include “Feminist Resources for #TheResistance,” a free virtual issue that draws on forty years of feminist scholarship to provide resources to analyze and resist the policy agendas, political discourses, and cultural phenomena that are currently promoting sexism, racism, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia. Consisting of over forty articles that have been made freely available until August 31, we hope it will be of use to teachers, students, and activists—anyone with an agenda of resistance. The #FeministResistance page also includes an interview with Tamika Mallory, a co-chair of the Women’s March on Washington.
The latest essay in the series Currents: Feminist Key Concepts and Controversies is my own “In Defense of Identity Politics,” which takes on attempts to blame “identity politics” for the results of the 2016 election. The essay is accompanied by an extensive digital archive that collects multimedia resources on identity politics.
In the series Short Takes: Provocations on Public Feminism, Catherine Connell, Liz Plank, Brigid Schulte, and Adia Harvey Wingfield discuss workplace sexism in their comments on Jessica Bennett’s Feminist Fight Club, and Bennett offers a response. Trans feminism, representation, and family are the topics of Marcie Bianco, Raewyn Connell, Jay Prosser, Susan Stryker, and Judit Takacs’s responses to Susan Faludi’s In the Darkroom, with Faludi responding as well. And up very soon will be responses to Laura Kipnis’s controversial new book Unwanted Advances, by Jaclyn Friedman, Claire Potter, Kelly Oliver, Aishah Shahidah Simmons, and Lisa Wade. The future of spatial constructs in the populist era

Trump, BREXIT, Russian-European crisis and the rise of populist parties in Europe and Turkey came as an existential challenge to regionalism in Europe, Eurasia and worldwide. The conference organised by Centre for International Relations Studies of the University of Liège and Cambridge Ukrainian Studies and co-funded by the European Union, seeks to address broad sets of questions about the effects of the above phenomena on the regions, broadly conceived.

1) To what extent the rise of ‘economic nationalism’ in the UK and the US puts an end on regionalisation processes in Europe, North America, Trans-Atlantic trade and overall state of regional integration in different parts of the world.

2) How the changes in the core of world economic system will affect regional integration and regional identities in other emerging regions in the word, i.e. Eastern Partnership, Central Asia, etc.

3) Will a new regionalism be limited to ‘shallow’ free trade zones or new forms of protectionist regional blocs will emerge as compromise between globalism and localism?

4) Will these new forms stick to neo-liberalism or will they adhere to other ideologies, thus, creating new spatial entities on totally different principles? How will such regions imagine themselves, other regions and structures of global governance?

5) Will the region exist as an objective entity or will it degrade into fractured amalgam of communities prone to multidimensional disintegration under new tensions brining down regional orders and leading to inter-state conflicts?

6) Where did it come from? The session will explore the ideational sources of the new forms of nationalism and populism. We would welcome papers looking into popular culture in order to explore how great and regional powers imagine themselves and surrounding neighbourhoods and how this imagination informs region-building processes.

Papers which consider the above and related questions through the prism of regional conditions in Eastern Europe, Black Sea region and Central Asia are particularly welcome. The conference will be held at the University of Liege on (29 November 2017). AUTHORITY

The Society for the Humanities at Cornell University seeks interdisciplinary research projects for residencies that reflect on the philosophical, aesthetic, political, legal, ecological, religious, and cultural understandings of authority.

From auctoritas to the author to authoritarianism, the question of authority – whether grounded in epistemological expertise, juridical power, rhetorical persuasiveness, creative innovation, divine decree, or political charisma – is inextricable from humanistic inquiry and critique. With authority, the power to decide, to authorize, to adjudicate, to rule, and to hold sway stands or falls – in science, law, art, oratory, religion, or politics. The Society invites scholarly projects that trace the consequences, crises, and possibilities of authority across historical periods, disciplinary boundaries, geographic territories, and social contexts.

At stake in authority is who or what authorizes and bestows power, prestige, and influence. On what basis does authority claim to rule? Knowledge? Law? Charisma? Popular will? The sovereign word? Tradition? Moreover, each expression of authority calls forth its contestation and opposition. At times authority is contested within the same discursive sphere (e.g. different scientific paradigms or hermeneutic interpretations at loggerheads); at times, however, the opposition is based on another source of authority: religious law vs. secular law; scientific knowledge vs. political will; economic concerns vs. ethical concerns. At such junctures, the question then arises: who or what power adjudicates the conflict between appeals to different authoritative instances?

The Society invites scholars to explore the ‘ends of authority,’ understood as its purposes, goals, and ideals as well as its limitations, aporias, and paradoxes. Applicants could investigate the rise of authoritarianism across different historical and political or religious contexts, exploring its conditions, its appeal, its critiques. One could research the crisis of scientific authority, in which expertise itself is called into question on grounds that are impervious to scientific argumentation. Considering the death of the author, one could question what signs, strokes, words, tics, and idiosyncrasies determine a text’s or artwork’s ‘author’; what authorizes an original from its copy or fake; or the degree to which the authority of a few authors still determines research fields today. In the age of a superabundance of information, what differentiates ‘real’ (authoritative) information from ‘fake news,’ and how one can be interchanged with the other as an ‘equal’ source of authority?

The Society for the Humanities welcomes applications from scholars and practitioners who are interested in investigating this topic from the broadest variety of international and disciplinary perspectives.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Fellows should be working on topics related to the year’s theme. Their approach to the humanities should be broad enough to appeal to students and scholars in several humanistic disciplines.

Applicants must have received the Ph.D. degree before January 1, 2017. The Society for the Humanities will not consider applications from scholars who received the Ph.D. after this date. Applicants must also have one or more years of teaching experience, which may include teaching as a graduate student.

APPLICATION PROCEDURES

The following application materials must be submitted via AJO fellowship #9274 on or before OCTOBER 1, 2017. Any other method of applying will not be accepted.

1. A curriculum vitae

2. A one-page abstract describing the research project the applicant would like to pursue during the term of the fellowship (no more than 300 words)

3. A detailed statement of the research project (1,000 – 2,000 words). Applicants may also include a one-page bibliography of the most essential materials to the project.

4. A course proposal for a seminar related to the applicant’s research. Seminars meet two hours per week for one semester and enrollment is limited to fifteen advanced undergraduates and graduate students. The course proposal should consist of:

a. A brief course description suitable for the University course catalog (50-125 words)
b. A detailed course proposal (up to 300 words)
c. A list of the essential texts for the course

5. One scholarly paper (no more than 35 pages in length)

6. Two letters of recommendation from senior colleagues to whom candidates should send their research proposal and teaching proposal. Letters of recommendation should include an evaluation of the candidate’s proposed research and teaching statements. Please ask referees to submit their letters directly through the application link. The Outreach Coordinator will be housed in the Center for European Studies (CES) within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) at the University of Florida (UF). The core responsibilities of the position will be to organize all aspects of CES outreach activities on and off campus, including but not limited to assisting in the selection of guest speakers, designing outreach activities, and working with other core CES staff and faculty to expand the impact of the CES on and off campus. The Outreach Coordinator will be directly responsible for the implementation of outreach events including reserving space, managing travel and accommodations for guests and advertising to the campus and general public. In addition, the Outreach Coordinator will develop and design all CES related materials (academic and outreach related) and manage all CES social media accounts and the units website to ensure that these are active and up to date resources.

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Responsible for the organization of all grant related talks, symposia, workshops and conferences in addition to managing travel and accommodations for all participants.
Works directly with the Director and takes primary responsibility for drafting all outreach related sections of grant applications and reports.
Organizes and manages CES symposia and the CES Speakers' Series including recruitment and scheduling.
Develops new and continuing collaborative activities with the Harn Museum (Museum Nights) + Risk Cinema as well as other UF campus institutions.

1917-2017: Comparative Looks on the Soviet Artistic Avant-Gardes

The Soviet artistic avant-gardes have been raising a specific interest for a long time. For instance, their multiple practices, their theoretical apparatus, their opuses as well as the influences they exerted have been largely surveyed by the academic world. Ever since the 1990’s a reappraisal of the multiple reuses and reinterpretations of those “avant-gardes” have been carried out. Our international symposium aims to question and put into context that reappraisal and the renewal it induces in the field of scholarly research.

The year 2017 as an historical landmark, the centenary of the Russian revolutions, offers a conducive environment for such reflections and thoughts. While evocating various and contradictory narratives, this centenary leads to rethink the vast array of meanings embodied by the revolutionary events as well as to shed a new light on the opuses they produced or lived through.

During two days, the International Symposium will gather a variety of international social sciences and arts scholars (Architecture, Musicology, Motion Pictures studies, Visual

Arts, Dance, Literature, Drama, History of Arts, Cultural History, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology…).

We should like to focus on the main questions raised by the 1910’s avant-garde, with a special emphasis on the interdisciplinary transfers and international exchanges that shaped the Russian and Soviet cultural life. We also endeavor to address the singularity of the 1917 as a pivotal year for the artistic avant-garde, that year being considered not only as a turning point but also as a “political epoch”. Finally, the symposium will seek to underline the contemporaneousness of the 1917 artistic thoughts by looking into different timeframes, from 1917 up to the current days.

The following paths might be followed:

1. What is a political opus?

- Underlining the flexibility of the rapport between art and politics;

- Questioning the various degrees of « policity » (Rancière’s concept) of an artwork (propaganda art, art as a contestation against the existing social order, revolutionary art as a social/political enfranchisement, self-proclaimed apolitical art, etc.);

- To what extent are the post-1917 opuses, even more, political opuses? According to us the latter expression cannot be meant as a constraint but rather as a creative opportunity enticed by the might of a political cycle, the Bolshevik Revolution.

- How to think the meeting of two revolutions, artistic and political? The meeting of modernity and political revolution?

- What are the artistic experiments, the new practices et artistic forms in a “revolutionary” view? (daily use objects, production modes, acoustic experiments, new materials, and so forth)?

- What approaches to the artistic celebrations of the 1917 Revolution to the extent they are supposed to capture the very essence of the Bolshevik Revolution (especially the 1918, 1920 and 1927 celebrations)?

2. Cross-disciplinary avant-gardes turned toward Europe

- Underlining the flux and exchanges (i.e. influences, inputs, co-buildings) between the different artistic fields with porous boundaries: Architecture, Music, Motion Pictures, Visual Arts, Dance, Literature (Drama, Poesy).

- The rise of communities of thought around several artistic centers: Moscow/Petrograd but also in the countryside and the Soviet Republics (Vitebsk, Kiev, Tbilisi…);

- Shed a light on the fruitful exchanges between the Soviet and European avant-gardes. How and by what means are those links created (artistic press, publishing houses, exhibits, concerts, personal relationships)?

3. “Contemporaneousness” of the esthetical and artistic issues raised by the avant-garde

- How do the current artists think about the political involvement of the revolutionary artists from 1917? Can they claim they somehow are their heirs?

- Relevance –or lack thereof- of the esthetical issues raised by the avant-garde artists and of the political issues borne by the 1917 Revolution when it comes to the current artists.

- What about the rediscovery of the past avant-garde nowadays? Current relevance and different re-uses or interpretations. How to question those new approaches with our current intellectual tools (media theory, pragmatism…)?

- How are those avant-gardes perceived? To confront their practices with the facts on the ground; to live and experiment the avant-gardes (how to inhabit a constructivist architecture, how to stage a play, what are the avant-garde music opuses played during the concerts/festivals, and son forth).

The presentations will last 30 minutes and will be delivered either in French, English or Russian. The scholars are kindly invited to emails their proposals at avantgardes2017@gmail.com before July, 15th.

The proposals will include a 4000-character abstract. The Organizing Committee will inform the participants of its decisions on the 1st of September.

SAIS is seeking to full a full-time position, open rank, tenured or tenure track, with a focus on Russia. The Russian Language Journal (ISSN: 0036-0252) is a bilingual, peer-review journal dedicated to scholarly review of research, resources, symposia, and publications pertinent to the study and teaching of Russian language and culture, as well as comparative and interdisciplinary research in Russian language, culture and the acquisition of Russian as a second language.

The Journal seeks contributions to the 2017 issue (Volume 67).

What is the task of poetry today? In times of hybrid cultures, nationalistic identities and digital post-factuality, the question of the social position of aesthetic practice should be considered in its all gravity.
To answer contemporary questions of the late-modern world demands a new poetic processing. Poesis and Polis are finding themselves in a conflicting field between „to make“ and „to be made“, a relation that will be revisited and critically examined.
Together with Slavic Studies scholar, literary scholar and translator Georg Witte, and on the occasion of his 65th birthday the conference is throwing a glance at the positions of lyrical contemporaneity.
Poets and scholars are invited to negotiate a possible (self) localization of contemporary poetry between poetic and political, individual and collective, past and present, private and public.

The spread of nationalist and authoritarian movements in Europe and around the world have prompted debates about a return of global fascism. At the same time, many countries are witnessing civil society activities opposing such movements. Politicians and activists from both camps endorse like-minded actors across borders. Do these developments suggest that we are living in a time comparable to the 1930s, when the decisive marker in national and international politics was the one between fascism and antifascism?

The conference investigates the contemporary relevance of fascism and antifascism by bringing together scholarly experts on these historical movements and actors in civil society. It will discuss the interrelatedness of fascism and antifascism, illuminate their global networks and local trajectories, analyze central characteristics and ideas, and trace shifts in discourses and practices of remembrance. Another focus are memory politics, phenomenology, current adaptations as well as the aesthetic dimensions and artistic practices associated with fascism or antifascism.

The overarching aim of the conference is to explore whether and how the histories of fascism and antifascism offer insights into the rise of authoritarian regimes today. What makes a fascist regime? What is the line separating authoritarianism from fascism? Can we identify "tipping points"? How should a civil society react to these challenges? Do antifascist movements of the 20th century offer a role model? How can insights into such historical connections benefit proponents of a democratic civil society?

During two days, the International Symposium will gather a variety of international social sciences and arts scholars (Architecture, Musicology, Motion Pictures studies, Visual

Arts, Dance, Literature, Drama, History of Arts, Cultural History, Philosophy, Sociology, Anthropology…).

The following paths might be followed:

1. What is a political opus?

- Underlining the flexibility of the rapport between art and politics;

- How to think the meeting of two revolutions, artistic and political? The meeting of modernity and political revolution?

- What are the artistic experiments, the new practices et artistic forms in a “revolutionary” view? (daily use objects, production modes, acoustic experiments, new materials, and so forth)?

2. Cross-disciplinary avant-gardes turned toward Europe

- The rise of communities of thought around several artistic centers: Moscow/Petrograd but also in the countryside and the Soviet Republics (Vitebsk, Kiev, Tbilisi…);

3. “Contemporaneousness” of the esthetical and artistic issues raised by the avant-garde

- How do the current artists think about the political involvement of the revolutionary artists from 1917? Can they claim they somehow are their heirs?

- Relevance –or lack thereof- of the esthetical issues raised by the avant-garde artists and of the political issues borne by the 1917 Revolution when it comes to the current artists.

There are very interesting photos of Chinese military land reclamation projects on South China Sea reefs on pp. 13-16.

The report balances what the media has been saying and provides an unbiased assessment of Chinese military strength. Although, this report does not fall directly under the scope of this blog, Russia's ongoing engagement with the PRC mandated me to post this.

Libraries: Culture, History, and Society is now accepting submissions for its third issue, to be published in Spring 2018, and for subsequent issues, to be published semiannually. A peer-reviewed publication of the Library History Round Table of the American Library Association and the Penn State University Press, LCHS is available in print and will be available online via JSTOR and Project Muse.

The only journal in the United States devoted to library history, LCHS positions library history as its own field of scholarship, while promoting innovative cross-disciplinary research on libraries’ relationships with their unique environments. LCHS brings together scholars from many disciplines to examine the history of libraries as institutions, collections, and services, as well as the experiences of library workers and users. There are no limits of time and space, and libraries of every type are included (private, public, corporate, and academic libraries, and special collections). In addition to Library Science, the journal welcomes contributors from History, English, Literary Studies, Sociology, Gender/Women’s Studies, Race/Ethnic Studies, Political Science, Architecture, and other disciplines.

The Central Slavic Conference is pleased to invite scholars of all disciplines working in Slavic, Eurasian, and East European studies to submit proposals for panels, individual papers, and roundtables at its annual meeting to be held in St. Louis, Missouri, USA, October 20-22, 2017.

Founded in 1962 as the Bi-State Slavic Conference, the Central Slavic Conference now encompasses seven states and is the oldest of the regional affiliates of ASEEES (Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies). Scholars from outside the region and from around the world are welcome.

Proposals for papers, panels, and roundtables should be submitted by email to CSC President Dr. David Borgmeyer at CentralSlavic@outlook.com no later than September 1, 2017. Early proposals are encouraged. All proposals should include:

· Participant name, affiliation, and email contact information;

· For individual paper presentation: title and brief description (limit 50 words);

The CSC will also dedicate a separate portion of the conference to undergraduate research presentations. Although we had many applications by the deadline (15th of May 2017) we are prolonging the application phase until the 31st of May (see http://www.culingtec.uni-leipzig.de/ESU_C_T/node/842). As ESU DH C & T is a member of the International Digital Humanities Training Network, courses taken at the Summer University are eligible for transfer credit towards the University of Victoria Graduate Certificate in DH (see http://www.uvic.ca/humanities/english/graduate/graduate-certificates/dhum-certificate/index.php).

The Summer University is directed at 60 participants from all over Europe and beyond. It wants to bring together (doctoral) students, young scholars and academics from the Arts and Humanities, Library Sciences, Social Sciences, the Arts and Engineering and Computer Sciences as equal partners to an interdisciplinary exchange of knowledge and experience in a multilingual and multicultural context and thus create the conditions for future project-based cooperations.

The Leipzig Summer University is special because it not only seeks to offer a space for the discussion and acquisition of new knowledge, skills and competences in those computer technologies which play a central role in Humanities Computing and which determine every day more and more the work done in the Humanities and Cultural Sciences, as well as in publishing, libraries, and archives etc., but because it tries to integrate also linguistics with the Digital Humanities, which pose questions about the consequences and implications of the application of computational methods and tools to cultural artefacts of all kinds.

It is special furthermore because it consciously aims at confronting the so-called Gender Divide , i.e. the under-representation of women in the domain of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in Germany, Europe and many parts of the world, by relying on the challenges that the Humanities with their complex data and their wealth of women represent for Computer Science and Engineering and the further development of the latter, on the overcoming of the boarders between the so-called hard and soft sciences and on the integration of Humanities, Computer Science and Engineering.

As the Summer University is dedicated not only to the acquisition of knowledge and skills, but also wants to foster community building and networking across disciplines, languages and cultures, countries and continents, the programme of the Summer School features also communal coffee breaks, communal lunches in the refectory of the university, and a rich cultural programme (thematic guided tours, visits of archives, museums and exhibitions, and communal dinners in different parts of Leipzig).

The second annual Humanities and Social Sciences Landscape forum will be devoted to the notion of truth in its historical and disciplinary dimensions. We plan to discuss a number of general problems and to zoom in on the case of the Russian Revolution.

We invite scholars from different disciplines to reflect on the following set of interrelated issues:

- Modernist truth vs. “post-truth”. How does the dominant notion of truth – if such a thing exists in a society – change over time?

- Different disciplines in social sciences and the humanities operate with different notions of truth. How do these notions relate to and influence each other and how do they evolve over time?

- The “truth of the Russian Revolution” has changed repeatedly over time. Was it a purely political phenomenon or are there any epistemological foundations underlying these changes?

- It has been claimed that the Russian Revolution and the subsequent development of socialist world transformed the basic notions of truth in politics, history, anthropology and culture. The global collapse of socialism transformed them again. How can these paradigm shifts be described from different disciplinary perspectives?

Shaping Humanities Data: Use, Reuse, and Paths Toward Computationally Amenable Cultural Heritage Collections

Galleries, libraries, archives, and museums (GLAMs) have been building digital collections for decades. Approaches developed to provide access to these collections often emulate analog research experiences that focus on supporting single object interactions and features like virtual "page" turners. While approaches of this kind have been very valuable for some kinds of scholarship, researchers and instructors seeking to leverage computation can find it difficult to work with collections developed in this vein. One barrier to developing approaches that better support these researchers is an incomplete understanding of how humanists, among others, are using and reusing cultural heritage data - and what they may need moving forward. Collections as Data is one of a range of efforts encouraging cultural heritage organizations to develop collections and systems that are more amenable to emerging computational methods and tools. Beyond simply designing-to-fit, the movement towards computationally amenable collections provides an opportunity to reframe, enrich, and/or contextualize collections in a manner that seeks to avoid replication of long standing biases inherent in cultural heritage collection practice. In this day-long Digital Humanities 2017 pre-conference workshop, we aim to engage directly with research and pedagogical practice that draws upon digital collection use. This workshop will ultimately inform the development of recommendations that aim to support cultural heritage community efforts to make collections available as data.

Proposals

We seek proposals for talks, demonstrations (of projects, collections, tools, datasets, or other work), hands-on instruction, or walk-throughs that explore approaches and issues common to computational creation and/or use, and reuse, of digital collections. Proposals for talks can be brief (10 minutes) or extended (30 minutes). Similarly, proposals for demonstrations and hands-on instruction can be brief (30 minutes) or extended (60 minutes). We encourage submissions from all members of the DH community engaged with cultural heritage collection data, whether using data, preparing and stewarding data, or designing interfaces that enable discovery and access. We are invested in developing a program that reflects the international scope of DH work.

Please submit your proposal (300 words) using the online form by May 7, 2017. Notification of acceptances will be sent out on or before June 1, 2017.
