I ended up getting called over the air to meet up with one of my coworkers who needed coverage for an overtime detail, the other cop is a guy I went through the academy with and we started talking about old times in our academy and the tv show the academy.

I then got a call for a domestic in progress. A male and a female fighting as they were walking across a bridge.It was called in via cell phone by a passerby. We were in the area and the other cop came with me as backup, we found and went off a couple fitting the description, they were arguing loudly but not actively fighting when we saw them.

We were soon joined by two sergeants and another officer as we arrived. We separated the two and interviewed them separately. They both had basically the same story. They had been celebrating the males birthday, at some point the male became a bit despondent and depressed. He took off walking, the female followed him and caught up to him at the bridge where she confronted him about her suspicions that he was intent on harming himself. He confirmed her suspicions and she physically tried to drag him home. (which is what the passerby saw)

While we were interviewing the male, his demeanor was "off" he was verbally rambling, would escalate and de-escalate in somewhat strange behavior, at one point professing his undying love for the female and the very next moment calling her a bitch etc.

We placed the male in handcuffs for safety precautions. He was not under arrest but if we feel a situation is or could be unsafe (IE an EDP on a bridge, we can secure the person in handcuffs without actually arresting them)

Our initial assessment was that both parties had been consuming alcohol, that the female was acting in the best interest of the EDP male. So there was no domestic assault, that the female appeared to be alert, oriented and properly interacting with us during the interview. On the other hand the male needed immediate psychological intervention.

We called for an ambulance to our location for an evaluation of an EDP.

While we were continuing to assess the situation and awaiting the ambulance,and in a split second the female said something to the male in Spanish, he replied also in Spanish. They were told by an officer not to continue speaking to eachother.

Before the officer could finish admonishing them the female yelled at the male in English "why are you doing this to me"

She then turned from the cop who was interviewing her (the cop that just moments earlier I was shooting the shit with about good times gone by) and launched herself onto the bridge rail in an attempt to catapult herself to the river below.

The cop caught her around the waist just as she went airborne and brought her to the "ground" which in all actuality was the floor of the bridge. Where she continued to fight him and try to break free of his grasp and attempt another jump.

One cop stayed with the male so he couldn't leap handcuffed into the river (that would be a bitch of a report to have to write) and the two sergeants and I assisted in securing and gaining control of the female.

A second ambulance for a second EDP was requested and both the male and the female were sent to different hospitals for evaluations and treatment.

Things happen fast in this job, but I did end up finally getting something blogworthy to write about.

COURT RANT

I had court yesterday, I hate court, the place sucks, it is filled with jaded people who have seen justice trampled upon time and time again. I come away from that place every time with the feeling that nobody cares and the world will never ever be a better place.

Being at court is part of my job. If I make an arrest I have to eventually be there and to give testimony when needed. However, working early nights and getting home at 1:00 am usually (but not always because when I have a late call, arrest or report due, I can be at work till all hours of the morning) compounded with job induced insomnia (partially from aggravation and partially from working many years on the overnight shift) does not bode well for being awake and at my best for court at 8:30 am (sometimes as many as 2-3 times a week, and it doesn't matter if it is on my scheduled days off or not, I am compelled to be there) I can be subpoenaed by the district attorneys office (which is usually the case) or the defense (as was the case yesterday)

Yesterday, I was compelled by the defense to be at court, I had absolutely no pertinent information to provide. I was on scene for a total of five minutes, just long enough to hear from the arresting officer that the victims identified the suspect, I watched as the suspect was handcuffed and I got an alarm call in my sector and had to clear the scene to take my call. That was the sum of my involvement with that call. With that in mind I can tell you that I was stuck there for the entire day and the defense attorney never called me to the stand.

I sat there in the waiting room until the last cop testified and came back to the waiting room to let me know that they were beginning closing arguments in the courtroom and it looked like I wasn't going to be testifying.

Yes, looking at the bright side, I got paid overtime to do absolutely nothing at all.

But as a taxpayer, I find this to be an abhorrent misuse of taxpayer funds perpetrated by the defense attorney, as a cop, I find it to be annoying, and as a person I find it to be just plain bad manners (if you are going to make me be there, at least call me to the stand and let me say hi to the jury, Ok?)

Oh yeah, before I forget, the case that was being heard yesterday was a post operative transvestite hooker who allegedly pointed a handgun at a carload of teenagers who were harassing her . She was ultimately found not guilty and will probably be back out working the streets before this post hits the Internet.

And as always, have a nice day....

REALITY TV FLASHBACKS

I was channel surfing with the Enforcerwife late last week and I came across this show on Fox Reality Tv. If you are a reality show junkie, or just want to understand the psyche of the local cops then I highly recommend this show. I can't believe that I missed season 1.

After recovering from the PTSD from hearing the SI's "instructing" the recruits, I was hooked. This show is damned close to what I went through back in the day.

There are a few new twists (we never had a recruit accidentally bring a cell phone to class) And I'd like to think that we were not as uncoordinated as LASD Class 368 (but I know we were, and maybe even a little worse for wear at times) But we did have recruits caught going out to bars when they should have been home studying, we had surprise inspections (both of our appearance and of our lunchbox's) We had recruits separated from the class at all points throughout the academy, we had Black Monday (the day a recruit would seriously question what they got themselves into) We had front lean and rest, squats,and being "called out" in front of the class .

We had Class B uniforms, Pt and Dt uniforms (and they had better be ready to go at a moments notice) We got gigged for repelling ropes (threads hanging from our class B uniforms) We were advised that we "looked like a soup sandwich" or "Joe / Joan Bagadonuts"

Most people watching the show as well as the recruits would think that these SI's are the most sadistic bunch of barbarians around, but speaking from experience, the things that the recruits don't even know they are learning right now are the things that are going to keep them safe and alive during their career in law enforcement. After their time in the academy they may never see many of these people again, but the lessons learned and the experience will hopefully stay with them forever.

Watching the show, I could somewhat predict what the reaction from the SI's would be to each action or misstep that the recruits made. I watched the show with a mix of nostalgia, remembering my days in the academy (and very much like people remember high school, it is a much sweeter memory than it was as an experience) voyeuristic pleasure (seeing what their consequences would be for similar mistakes we made) and kind of an awe that someone came up with the idea of showcasing the trials and tribulations of academy life. Fox Reality did a good job with this one.

BOOKING ROOM HIJYNX

I have a valid reason for not posting this last week. The Enforcer got a boo-boo and my thumb is in a splint. So read this entry slowly because that's how it was written. And yes this is a shameless search for the sympathy so lacking around here. Sheesh. (My Sergeant is a reader of this blog and if I get alot of sympathy I'm sure he will stop teasing me about being a wimp LOL)

The night started off well and then it started sliding. I should have known it wasn't gonna end up good when I figured out that day shift had locked up every whiny criminal they could find. I think a few of them were wondering why there wasn't a mint on a pillow for them.

Then two of the detectives brought in a suspect and, well you know how they never really show the booking process on all those cop shows you watch? thats because there is about 25-40 or so really stupid questions we have to ask prisoners before they go "inside" One of them being "do you have any disabilities" and there is a drop down menu on the computer with such gems as: prosthetic limbs, eye defects and the best "Plate in Head" Well no one ever answers yes to the plate in head, until this night. Yup you guessed it, when I asked about disabilities he said "huh" I ran through them all in a monotone drawl, him answering no to each one right up to the plate in head question to which he said yes, I must have had an incredulous look on my face, because he then told me that "it was more like a metal mesh screen" he had gotten due to a bad motorcycle accident. I just looked at the detectives with the what the hell are you doing to me look on my face.

Then it happened........I

Ok so I know you are all wondering, Enforcer, was it a badguy with a knife? gun? possibly a tree stump?

No it was a great big 40 pound jail cell door.....

Yes you read it right, I slammed a door on my hand while trying to stuff an unruly prisoner inside said cell. While stuffing him in I inadvertently slammed the door on my poor lil thumbkin and made a big boo-boo. I split my knuckle open and bruised / sprained my thumb. And it hurt like hell. Its been swollen purple and sore all week, it's starting to feel a bit better now so I thought I'd let you all know about it.

IT'S GOOD TO BE AN AMERICAN

My mother sent me this email that she received this weekend and I thought I'd share it with you all for Memorial Day. I immediately turned around and
> witnessed one of the greatest acts of patriotism I have ever seen.
>>> >
> Moving thru the terminal was a group of soldiers in their camos. As
> they began heading to their gate, everyone (well almost everyone)
> was abruptly to their feet with their hands waving and cheering.
>>> >
> When I saw the soldiers, probably 30-40 of them, being applauded
> and cheered for, it hit me. I'm not alone. I'm not the only red-
> blooded American who still loves this country and supports our
> troops and their families.
>>> >
> Of course I immediately stopped and began clapping for these young
> unsung heroes who are putting their lives on the line everyday for
> us so we can go to school, work and home without fear or reprisal.
>>> >
> Just when I thought I could not be more proud of my country or of
> our service men and women, a young girl, not more than 6 or 7 years
> old, ran up to one of the male soldiers. He kneeled down and said
> 'hi.'
>>> >
> The little girl then asked him if he would give something to her
> daddy for her.
>>> >
> The young soldier, who didn't look any older than maybe 22 himself,
> said he would try and what did she want to give to her Daddy. Then
> suddenly the little girl grabbed the neck of this soldier, gave him
> the biggest hug she could muster and then kissed him on the cheek.
>>> >
> The mother of the little girl, who said her daughter's name was
> Courtney, told the young soldier that her husband was a Marine and
> had been in Iraq for 11 months now. As the mom was explaining how
> much her daughter Courtney missed her father, the young soldier
> began to tear up.
>>> >
> When this temporarily single mom was done explaining her situation,
> all of the soldiers huddled together for a brief second. Then one
> of the other servicemen pulled out a military-looking walkie-
> talkie. They started playing with the device and talking back and
> forth on it.
>>> >
> After about 10-15 seconds of this, the young soldier walked back
> over to Courtney, bent down and said this to her, 'I spoke to your
> daddy and he told me to give this to you.' He then hugged this
> little girl that he had just met and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
> He finished by saying 'your daddy told me to tell you that he loves
> you more than anything and he is coming home very soon.'
>>> >
> The mom at this point was crying almost uncontrollably and as the
> young soldier stood to his feet, he saluted Courtney and her mom. I
> was standing no more than 6 feet away from this entire event.
>>> >
> As the soldiers began to leave, heading towards their gate, people
> resumed their applause. As I stood there applauding and looked
> around, there were very few dry eyes, including my own. That young
> soldier in one last act of selflessness, turned around and blew a
> kiss to Courtney with a tear rolling down his cheek.
>>> >
> We need to remember everyday all of our soldiers and their families
> and thank God for them and their sacrifices. At the end of the day,
> it's good to be an American.

THE HOT LESBIAN STRIPPER STORY

Ok, now that I got your attention, technically she wasn't super hawt, she was cute in that dirty bad girl sort of way with the tatts and piercing's)

AND

she's only been a lesbian for a few months but I digress.

ON WITH THE STORY....

I got a call for a walk in complaint for threats. Seems as if HLS (hot lesbian stripper) either did or didn't tell her sister about the sisters cheating husband. Cheating husband then left some very volatile violent threats on HLS voicemail. (I do love idiot suspects who do the "proving" part of my job for me) I took down all the info and then had her sit in one of the report rooms and write out her account of the incident in her own handwriting. I did not yet know she was a HLS as of this point in the story, but again I'm getting ahead of myself.

BACK TO THE STORY............

While I was doing that one of my co-workers asked me if I had change for a $5 for the candy vending machine. I peeled off five ones for him, to which he commented "Using up your stripper roll?" I chuckled and told him his mama was only going to get spare change from me this week.

That's when I hear coming from the report room "what you guys got against strippers?"

By this time I am beginning to really laugh, either I'm being expertly punked or I just inserted my foot directly in my mouth trying to be a wiseass. I look at her and say "lemme guess you are a stripper, what are the freaking odds of that?" She gave me that boy don't you feel stupid smile and told me that yes she was a stripper and where she worked. Letting us know it's a high end champagne club. To which I nudged my coworker and said "I think she's telling us that we cops don't make enough scratch to get in there" I gave her the boy don't you feel stupid smile as she began backpedaling We all then had a spirited debate on the best strip clubs in the area and she then tried to recruit one of our meter maids as a stripper.

End result, coworker got his candy bar, HLS call will be investigated, meter maid is mulling over a career change and I had tons of paperwork to get through.

PAYBACKS A STONE COLD BITCH

As I reported in the last post, I had a grand old time busting another cops chops yesterday about the duck caper.

Well, I report the good the bad and the truly ugly for you my blog readers. And by truly ugly I mean when police payback is delivered it is delivered with a vengeance. Cop Style Vengeance.

I had a domestic tonight where the suspect laid out his girlfriend with one punch. He was then "subdued" by bystanders. In the process of the subduing the suspect defecated in his pants.

He was my arrest so one of the other thoughtful cops decided to place the suspect in my police car for me. He also took the liberty of rolling up all of my windows and putting the heat on in the car with the poopy pants suspect marinating in the back seat. Everything has been blasé around here lately. No real blogworthy stuff. I don't like to use the blog to bitch about stuff, but working without a contract for so long, all kinds of new rules and regulations coming down from management and daily minutia has left me not finding the funny in my job lately.

Regarding the above issues, I can understand that things have to be orderly, I can understand that there needs to be accountability, but what I can't understand is the constant erosion of officer discretion due to new general orders and directives being sent down to us on a daily basis at a time where management has to know that morale is at an all time low due to contract issues.

With that being said, I do have a funny to report. Working the other day, I was talking to the officer in the sector that abuts mine right after we hit the streets after roll call (The guy is an awesome friend and great cop) but he is low key, solitary, and one of the most sarcastically funny people I know. And he doesn't like to let on that he is a nice guy and has feelings.

As we were talking I saw the car approach the parking lot. (I do have to say here that veteran cops can spot someone from a mile away who is going to drive up and ask for directions or give a heads up about something) It sometimes is a pleasant experience for the cop but we have that split second sinking feeling that this person may be that lonely person who will attempt to keep us talking to them for hours just for the human contact.

I didn't have to worry because just as the car approached I got an alarm call in my sector. The other cop would have to interact with this person alone. (There is no "leave no man behind rule" when it comes to dealing with the public, so I was happily on my way.

As I pulled away I heard the other cop (the guy I was chatting with) radio into dispatch that he was going off with an "animal call" I chuckled to myself. I checked on the alarm and beat feet back to find out what the "animal call" was. As I arrived, the other cop was just finishing the call. It seems that a duckling had fallen into a catch basin and was trapped. The car that approached us earlier had requested help in freeing the duckling. She had been on the phone all day with different agencies and had gotten the run around. So she decided to do it herself but couldn't get the storm drain off. That's when she asked for assistance. The other cop freed the duck and brought it down to the pond and reunited it with it's fine feathered family.

After they left I had a field day making ducky references to the cop all night long, calling him Scrooge McDuck,Daffy, Donald, Baby Huey etc... One reference that stuck out was the Make Way For Ducklings story I used to read to my kids when they were younger (only with him leading the parade of ducklings)

As a cop, no good deed goes unpunished (or un ragged on) but I got to say he did a great job and I am glad that it all had a happy ending. Hell no I won't stop teasing him and if anyone knows where I can get a 7 foot tall stuffed or rubber ducky please let me know.....

A HISTORY IN PICTURES

I went to the wake of an old school buddy last night, I have had a handful of school mates that have passed on since high school, but last night's one was the younger brother of a good friend of mine back in the day.

We all grew up in the 70's in New England and some of my fondest memories were of all of us playing street hockey imagining ourselves as the next Stanley Cup winning Bruins team.

We all intermittently kept in touch through the years but life happens and family and raising kids take the place of old friends. Several years back Stevie contracted EEE. Eastern Equine Encephalitis. It ravaged him,he ended up beating it but he developed a seizure disorder. He kept it in check enough to get married and have a somewhat normal life. But after about 15 years of dealing with it his body gave out. He had a massive seizure and passed away this past week. He was a great kid, had an awesome spirit, and was a ferocious competitor, he also had one hell of a slap shot.

As I said before, we all grew up in the same neighborhood, we were all middle class families, into sports, girls, cars and all the things that go with it. I noticed when I went up to pay my respects that they had a picture board displayed with candid shots of Stevie through the years. Its strange how things hit you at the weirdest times.

I was looking at all the pictures, remembering the good old days when the actual photos struck me like a bolt of lightning. There were all different camera type shots that made up the collage of photos and I realized that they looked exactly like my mothers box of photos of us growing up.

There were the real old baby photos from the early 70's taken with the old Kodak flashbulb boxy type camera (the first generation of color photos), then there were middle school pictures taken with the new "top of the line" instant cameras (the kind everyone would shake out to make the image come out faster).

At the same time in history school photos were all about the trick photography fancy stuff and there was an old 3rd grade photo of him with a full front profile background and then in the foreground was a right profile superimposed looking shot. I remembered I had one of those somewhere and how I was amazed how they made them look like they did. I also remembered how I had gotten into a fistfight a few days before the photo session and that my front tooth was missing in that shot.

More shots came into view and I noticed that the high school aged photos were 35 millimeter (larger photo paper and more vibrant colors) and then the newest photos were all digital prints.

I realized that in those photos were not only Stevie's personal history, but the history of our generation.

I paid my respects to the family, remembered the old days and left to go back to work. I would love to take all the credit and say that it was all planned and choreographed perfectly. Yes, part of it was my training and experience but the truth is the two factors that saved this from being an even greater tragedy was the fact that I didn't know if the teenager had been shot in the back of the head (and I having been an EMT before being a cop, did not want to physically yank him to the floor and risk possibly paralyzing a victim) and the fact that when he was startled, he did not make a move towards the gun.

I am glad that I never had to find out but I often wonder what would have happened if I initially made the assumption that he was not a victim or if when I startled him he jumped towards the gun before I could have secured him.

It is not something that wakes me up at night screaming, but it is something that does bother me when I think about it.

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I just started writing another post and while thinking back over things I decided that this was a call that I had not shared with you all when it happened that may give a small perspective of the things that a police officer deals with from time to time, I will post this one and give you time to respond if you want to and then give you the rest of the story.....

You get dispatched to a frantic unknown 911 call, the dispatcher tells you over the air that she really doesn't know what is going on but she thinks that it may be someone stabbed and the intruder is still in the house.

When you arrive there are frantic adults and kids all over the place, crying and urging you inside. In the panic, you get separated from your backup officer but there is an adult female who is charging towards the door and you have to keep her safe, you need to make sure she don't go inside. You catch up with her at the doorway, as you look inside, you see 3 people all covered in blood lying motionless on couches just inside the doorway. You advise dispatch of what you see and request additional units to the scene.

What you see is:

An adult female with a bullet hole right under her eye on the couch just inside the door covered in blood.

An adult male with what appears to be a bullet wound in his mouth lying on the couch to the right of the female covered in blood with a handgun lying in his lap.

A teenage male about a foot away from the male with the gun on his lap, covered in blood, motionless with his hands behind his head as if possibly clutching a wound, but no visible wounds apparent aside from him being covered in blood. When you check his pulse, his eyes go wide and appear to be dilated, he will not respond to you continuously yelling at him to "show me your hands" he is at first silent, almost catatonic but when he begins to speak, everything he says is loud incoherent babbling and he is again as I said before about a foot away from a loaded handgun.

You do not know if he is a third victim (and there is possibly someone still inside the house) Although backup units are now on scene and along with you trying to make heads or tails of the situation.

You do not know if he is the gunman who is currently on drugs or drunk and the gun is lying a foot away from him.

You do not know if there is some other reason for this teenage boy to be acting this way.

You have about 1/1000's of a second to make a decision and these are the facts that you have before you, What do you do?

MY POLITICALLY CORRECT DAUGHTER STRIKES AGAIN

Last night me and Enforcerwife took our youngest (the older 2 were at EnforcerEx's house) out to run some errands. We did the hanging out watching movies thing for awhile, then we did some early spring cleaning and I finished off the night watching the Sprint Cup (damn I cant get used to calling it that, it sounds more like a bicycle or boating race than it does Nascar) Race that we tivo'd.

While we were doing the movie segment, oldest daughter saw fit to give middle son a wedgie. Middle son then chased oldest daughter into her bedroom in an attempt at revenge. He stood there pounding on the door while oldest daughter held firm on the other side of the door.

Me always being the impartial and fair dad. (not to mention that I wanted the banging to stop so I could hear the movie) summonsed middle son to a "conference" I told him the old adage that "revenge is a soup best served cold" and asked him if he knew what it meant. He said "Sure dad, you mean instead of a wedgie give her a whitewash in the snow instead. Great idea"

Yeah, I love the boy but sometimes......

I did explain it to him but I'm still not sure I got my point across.

911 THE BABY DID IT

The other night we got a call for a nine one one open line. Sometimes people need help bad but for whatever the circumstances they can not speak or speak loudly to the dispatcher over the phone.

Open line calls tend to get your juices flowing and your mind racing as a responding cop because the hang ups while they can be serious are usually pranks, people testing the system, or the accidental oopsie. When the caller hears the dispatcher identify themselves they usually hang right up and are to embarrassed to answer the call back. (Please people answer the callback, it saves me the patrol cop from having to come over and nose around in your house to make sure there isn't a madman in your closet)

We respond to the open line call and as we get there we are advised by dispatch that they're still on line with the caller and there's no speaking just background noise.

We new we were in the right place because dispatch advised us they could hear us knocking and announcing over the phone.

We were let in by the dad, who had just gotten out of the shower, mom is sitting on the couch watching law and order and out of the corner of my eye I se a horrified little boy look at me and take off into the bedroom very quickly.

Just as the child got into the bedroom dispatch advises us over the radio that the connection with the caller had been lost.

I also see a little-er toddler be-bopping around with his sippy cup.

Ok everything starts to come together now.

I walk in to the room and ask the horrified boy "do you know who was playing with the phone?" Without batting an eye he looks up with big eyes and states as honest as he can " THE BABY DID IT!!!!"

Then starts bawling his eyes out and confesses, he heard them talking about 911 on law and order and thought it was cool and wanted to try it out (I wish more suspects would crack as easy as that)

We go over the whole 911 is for emergencies chat and went on our merry way. On the last hour, everyone ended up making arrests, so there was a flurry of work for me to do. I got through most of it easy enough, but the last one was a drunk young man who really couldn't handle his alcohol. He was belligerent as all hell, telling us he was gonna carve up and smoke all us cops like so much bacon (boy if I had a nickel for every pig comment I could be sitting on a beach in Cancun with a fancy rum drinks that has one of those umbrella stirrers)

The guy kept on his tirade for awhile, would take a break and start up all over again. What kept setting him off was bail. He would ask what his bail would be, we would answer him, he would get calm and then think he had an outstanding warrant (which to my knowledge he did not) and he would re-escalate his bad behavior, because he didn't think he was getting out so he would raise hell and make our night as miserable as his.

At one point he told us how he was college educated and we probably were not. He then asked how much money he had on him, we told him he had $90 dollars, he then asked what his bail was and we told him $40, (he wasn't following the conversation well) and told us we just said his bail was $90. So I talked really slow and broke it down for him as if he was a 5th grader. "Son, you have $90 dollars, your bail is $40 dollars, anything left over you get to keep"

To which he replied "well how much is that?"

I told him you figure it out college boy.

------------------------------------------------------------

But my night didn't end there, I worked the detail at the local 24 hour restaurant. It was busy all night long, there was no real problems but I had to keep on my toes the whole shift.

By the end of the shift I was tired, the kind of tired where you think your eyes are playing tricks on you. I finished my shift, said bye to the workers and headed for the door.

As I got to the door, there were still people coming in to eat. A lot of them being intoxicated people coming from the clubs, who weren't ready to go home just yet.

I held the door for the group coming in, as they walked in I had to rub my eyes,

did I just see a large guy dressed in drag? wearing a dog collar? attached to a leash? the handle of the leash being held by another guy? coming in for an early morning breakfast?

Yup, I did. And I got in my truck and drove home.

My night was officially over.

OUTRAGE IN MASSACHUSETTS

QUINCY, Mass. (AP) -- A Level 3 sex offender arrested for allegedly peeping at a woman under a ladies' bathroom stall had been freed by the same judge who released a suspect in a New Bedford rape case.
David Flavell had been released from a treatment center in February 2006 after Superior Court Judge Richard Moses found he was not sexually dangerous.
Moses reached a similar conclusion in the case of Corey Saunders, who is accused of raping a 6-year-old boy in a New Bedford library last month.
Flavell allegedly startled a 36-year-old woman in a Braintree bookstore bathroom on Jan. 29.
Police say the 38-year-old Flavell was carrying a backpack containing a ski mask and duct tape. He was ordered held on $10,000 bail at his arraignment on Wednesday.

Lets see, this nitwit judge sets one predator free and he rapes a little boy. During that time, Nassar was implicated by various people close to the case as the real Boston Strangler, who killed 13 women between 1962 and early 1964.
He has denied he had anything to do with the deaths, and his attorney, Claudia Bolgen, repeated the denial yesterday.
Nassar, now 75, was 15 when he killed a Lawrence store clerk in 1948. He was paroled in 1961, then charged in October 1964 with shooting an Andover gas station attendant to death as the man begged for mercy.
Nassar's case before the state's highest court concerned a motion he filed to indicate an intention to appeal the 1982 denial of a new trial in the second killing. But he never acted, and the matter was dismissed in November 1983.
In 2006, Nassar, who is serving a life sentence and is known for an extraordinarily high IQ, argued in court filings that he couldn't make his case because he was in federal prison in Leavenworth, Kansas, without access to Massachusetts legal materials.
The court noted yesterday that Nassar was back in Massachusetts in December 1983 and didn't inquire about the case then or for more than two decades after.
Bolgen said she was disappointed in the decision, but said Nassar had a pending motion for a new trial in Essex County that she was confident would be granted.
The motion claims the judge gave erroneous jury instructions, including one involving a witness photo identification, and questions whether Nassar was advised of his right to testify, Bolgen said.
Bolgen said she could not comment on why there was such a gap in litigation in the case, but said Nassar is innocent of the 1964 killing.
"We're hoping for justice, that's all I can say, even after this late date," she said.
While in jail, Nassar befriended Albert DeSalvo, who had been arrested for sexual assault in November 1964. The next year, Nassar told his attorney, F. Lee Bailey, that DeSalvo, another client of Bailey's, was the Boston Strangler.
DeSalvo then confessed in remarkable detail to Bailey, who told the story in court in hopes of convincing the jury considering the sexual assault charges that DeSalvo was insane. It didn't work, and DeSalvo was convicted and sentenced to life in prison.
DeSalvo later recanted his confession and was killed in prison in 1973. In 2001, forensic scientists announced that DNA evidence taken from the body of the strangler's final victim didn't match DeSalvo's.
Ames Robey, a former prison psychologist who analyzed both DeSalvo and Nassar, has said Nassar was a misogynistic, psychopathic killer who was a far more likely suspect than DeSalvo. Some followers of the case said Nassar was the real strangler and fed DeSalvo details of the murders so he could confess and gain notoriety.
In a 1999 interview with The Boston Globe, Nassar denied involvement in the strangler murders, but said the speculation killed any chance he had for parole.
"I had nothing to do with it," he said. "I'm convicted under the table, behind the scenes."
I am and have always been a huge history buff, and The Boston Strangler case has always intrigued me. I've always wondered if this guy was The Real Boston Strangler.

MY VALENTINES DAY ARREST

Firstly, let me preface this post with the fact that I think Congress is being short sided and idiotic in its quest to insert itself into baseball's crisis of steroid usage and abuse. If their actions amounted to anything more than compiling their little Mitchell report list and holding hearings then maybe I'd have a different opinion. We as cops are chastised for inaction or ineptitude if we take on a challenge and either go at it half assed or do not get results. As of yet other than bringing to light a situation that we all knew existed. I do not see what these costly hearings have accomplished.

The Roger Clemems interrogation was a farce, anyone who truly believes Clemens contention and Congressional Carnival 100% is naive at best. Everyone involved in his hearing basically made me sick to my stomach. There was absolutely no good guys here.

In one corner you have a:

former cop turned

sports groupie turned

drug dealer (yes my friends steroids is a drug and a very dangerous one at that) and this guy is up in front of Congress trying to portray himself as something other than a scumbag. He allegedly kept evidence of criminal activity hidden in his basement (syringes that he used on Clemens which may or may not have Clemens DNA and or anabolic steroids and HGH on them (as an insurance policy) What a stand up guy....

In the other corner you have a narcissistic, spoiled rotten (anyone remember when he played for the Red Sox he had a temper tantrum against the frugal nature of the team because there was no one to carry his bags from the plane to the team bus?) aging, multimillion dollar sports figure (albeit one that at one time was a phenomenal baseball player) but one who's career was on the downside, that time had ravaged. One who claims that in '86 that he didn't request to be taken out of the pivotal game due to a boo boo on his lil finger? (yeah after seeing his performance at the hearings I'm more convinced than ever that he did indeed ask to be taken out of the game which set in place a series of moves that led to a monumental collapse and ultimate loss to the NY Mets that year)

A guy that expects us to believe that he toted this ex cop drug dealer from city to city for the waning years of his career because he is just a generous good ole boy who takes care of his peeps?

A guy that threw his wife under the bus saying that he didn't know she was taking steroids and HGH for of all things a Sports Illustrated photo shoot?

A guy that after the last fact was brought to light didn't kick this guys ass or at least kick him to the curb? because he a forgiving kind of guy. (yeah so forgiving he will throw a 90 mph fastball at the head of the next batter after he percieves wrongdoing to one of his teammates?)

A guy whose teammate and buddy (Andy Pettite) who has already fessed up to useage and has nothing to gain by lying stated under oath that he had a conversation with Rog about usage (Clemens response to this: Andy must have misremembered (not misunderstood or misinterpreted or was lying about) but misremembered the conversation.

A guy that (hopefully) will only ever go to Cooperstown as a tourist to see how baseball was supposed to be.

And then you have the supposed bipartisan committee, the one whose:

democratic members who reveled in tearing down the rich guy in front of the tv cameras

Republican members who looked like a bunch of 12 year olds waiting for Rog to sign a baseball or something for them.

Hey guys, I hate to be the one to tell you but we have much more pressing and important issues to deal with in this goofy globe of ours such as:

Ohhh, I dunno a war going on?

A possible recession

Improprieties in the housing market?

Arrests and or convictions of elected officials?

Rampant violent crime?

You know, all those petty little things that aren't quite as important as the Baseball crisis, the things that aren't quite on your radar screens.

I love baseball and I hate how all of these nitwits have torn apart America's Game.

But I suppose baseball is a metaphor for American culture and if so then we are in deep doo-doo with clowns to the left of us, jokers to the right and here I am stuck in the middle with you.

NO HITTERS AND PEEPING TOMS

The night before last I had a no-hitter, this is a rare occurrence in my town. A no hitter occurs when there is ZERO calls for service in the officer's sector. This doesn't include self initiated stuff.

I made one car stop for a woman who clearly blew the red light (actually accelerating to get through the intersection after the light had gone red) Right in front of me. I pulled her over and asked if she knew why I was pulling her over and she sheepishly asked all provocatively "was it the yellow light that I went through?" I told her that it was that speeding. At this point all provocative talking ceased and she began arguing that I was picking on her. Long story short, she has 10 days to pay or appeal.

It was such a quiet night that by the end we all "jumped" a downtown call. Jumping a call means moseying over to the sector in question, without calling in as a backup in an effort to assist if needed. If your not needed and you get a call then you head back and take your call.

The downtown call was for a "Peeping Tom" we get there and sure enough there is peeper boy outside the rear window of one of the apartment buildings one hand on the woman's window the other hand way down low. And of course he had no idea why we were stopping him. When we ordered him to turn around, his zipper was down. Do I need to tell y'all that the junior man (rookie) was the one picked to search and handcuff the guy.
